Examples Of Digging By Seamus Heaney
Death of a Naturalist was concerned with the notion of growing up and loss of innocence. Seamus
Heaney describes the childhood experience differently as the child grows and changes perception of
nature from love to fear. Similarly, in Digging , Heaney presents himself as a child who studies
through writing, in contrast to his father and his grandfather who dig into the ground. Heaney s father
and grandfather use their shovels to work with the land, while Heaney uses his pen to write poetries. It
is clear that Heaney is not going to follow his father s legacy, digging , he is going to have a different
profession.
Seamus Heaney explores the amusement and happiness of a child discovering nature: There were
dragonflies, spotted butterflies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, By God, the old man can handle a spade, just like his old man. This line is metaphor and
Heaney is complimenting his father and grandfather that they are the best diggers , as the language it
uses is colloquial because this line strongly suggest about Heaney s family and it sounds like Heaney
is trying to impress his father and grandfather s digging skills. Also, By God , this implies Heaney s
amazement and it grabs readers attention and shows how much admiration Heaney has for his father
and grandfather s digging skill. This makes the reader feel empathetic because just working does not
simply mean it is important, but tradition too to work as part of the family tradition and carry father s

Differences in Crime Statistics in the Uniform Crime...
Arguments over crime statistics have been raging ever since governments began counting criminal
activity. In 1930 the United States congress authorized the attorney general of the United States to
survey crime in America. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was chosen to implement the program.
(Schmalleger p.38)
The Uniform Crime Reports is the survey taken by the FBI. This measure of crime in America
depends on reports to the police by victims of crimes. The UCR Program was developed by the FBI
for the purpose of serving law enforcement as a tool for operational and administrative purposes.
Through the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the UCR Program was developed.
Later, the National Sheriffs Association ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Arson is an exception to the Hierarchy Rule . One of the problems with the Uniform Crime Reports is
that many citizens do not always make official reports. For example, many women refuse to report
rapes because they do not want to relive the ordeal. Some citizen s feel that the police will not be able
to do anything about a crime committed against them therefore they do not report it. Another problem
with the Uniform Crime Reports is that Victimless crimes are rarely reported. These are crimes like
prostitution, gambling, and drug use. Since many of these crimes are not reported, then the UCR
becomes somewhat vague and incomplete.
When reviewing crime data, it is important for the reader to note the difference between offenses and
arrests. Offenses relate to events and arrests relate to persons. A single offense may involve no
arrestees; may involve one arrestee; or may involve many arrestees. National Crime Victimization
Survey (NCVS) is the Nation s primary source of information on criminal victimization. Twice each
year, data are obtained from a nationally representative sample of roughly 49,000 households
comprising about 100,000 persons on the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of criminal
victimization in the United States. The survey reports the likelihood of victimization by rape, sexual
assault, robbery,

Inspiring the Latino Community
Inspiring the Latino Community When we have dreams we do everything possible to achieve them.
We are sometimes faced with barriers that prevent, or make it harder for us to accomplish our goals.
Latinos in the United States work hard to give their families a better life. Latinos all have faced many
challenging circumstances in order to accomplish their dreams. Latinos look up to other Latinos and
when they see other Latinos that have succeed then they feel that they too can succeed in what ever
they put their mind to. George Lopez is a Mexican American comedian and actor. He serves as a great
role model for every Latino. He went through a lot of tough situations that made his life hard. George
Lopez has not only served as a great example of a Latino accomplishing his goals through hard
circumstances, but he has never forgotten where he comes from, he has always given back to the
community and has also represented the Latino community in the united states. From the first day that
George Lopez was born he did not have an easy start. Lopez was born, and raised in Mission Hills,
California. His father abandoned him when he was two years old. His father took his baby clothes, and
birth certificate with him. Later Lopez, and his mother moved into his maternal grandmothers house.
His mother then abandoned him at the age of 10 years old, and his mother remarried. His mother
hoped to begin a new life with her new husband. From that day on his grandmother, Benita Gutierrez

The three day food log made for the given athlete was based off of his profile, needs, likes, amount of
training, and whether he had time to cook or not. The twenty two year old professional football player

maintain his body weight, and maintain his body fat. This means that he should focus on consuming
the amount of protein at the upper end of the recommended scale since protein is known to help

It was calculated that he should consume about 3,649 calories a day. However, when I entered the
same data into my fitness pal when entering the food log, the recommended daily caloric intake was
2,560 which is a major difference. Due to this I tried staying between the range, but tried harder to
obtain the 3,649. I found it to be difficult to obtain this amount of calories, and still stay within range
of the necessary macronutrients. On day one of the food log, I was able to get his daily calories to
3,615 while staying in range of all the necessary macronutrients. On day two, his daily calories were
lower at 3,102, and on day three they were at 3,393. On day one, he does not have much more room to
enjoy foods off of the recommended food log, but during the other two he has a couple hundred
calories where he could enjoy something on his own. In his profile, it mentioned his love for Mountain
Dew. Mountain Dew, along with other sodas, have no health benefits, and are bad for the teeth, but I
included 36 oz. of it per day in the recommended food log. The purpose for including it was so he
would not be deprived of the things he enjoyed while following specific nutritional guidelines. I

Compare And Contrast Plato And The Matrix
Plato and The Matrix Compare and Contrast
In comparing the movie The Matrix to Plato s The Allegory of the Cave, both have a theme of trying
to find the truth. In the Matrix, Neo is confronted with a difficult choice. Either he can choose the blue
pill and forget that Morpheus ever confronted him with such news of the Matrix or he can take the red
pill and find out the truth, which is that he has been living in a simulated fantasy world. The Allegory
of the Cave is similar in that Plato attempts to explain reality. There are some epistemology questions
that occur in both situations such as, what is truth, how do we find it, and how reliable are our
perceptions? The people that are prisoners in the cave cannot see the world beyond the cave except for
glimmers of light reflecting off the wall and therefore believe that the cave is the real world when in
fact if they could escape to the outer world they would realize that outside the cave, in the light, is
actually the real world. Another example of comparison is Plato s two world belief, a world of being
and a world of becoming.
The contrasts between the Matrix and the excerpt from Plato are that in the Matrix, the perceived
reality that Neo is experiencing is a better description of what the reality outside the Matrix actually is.
Outside the Matrix, Neo discovers a very dark, chaotic, and weird place. Whereas, the cave depicted
in Plato s story is a scary and dark place and his place of ultimate reality is in the light

How Does Elie Wiesel Change Throughout The Book Night
Elie Wiesel: Transformation Throughout Night
Night is a memoir on how surviving the holocaust could change a person3. The book Night, by Elie
Wiesel, involves mostly himself (Elie Wiesel) and his father, and how he survived the holocaust, along
with death camps Auschwitz/Birkenau, Buna, Gleiwitz, and Buchenwald. This memoir shows how
Elie manages to survive the holocaust, while in a concentration camp. Surviving the holocaust
changed Elie Wiesel forever. Although Elie Wiesel s experience has affected him, it has had a negative
effect on him. As he says Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the small faces of the
children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky. (Wiesel 34) This shows that
Eliezer will never forget the troubles, and horrors that he experienced in the concentration camp.
Another thing that Eliezer says is, I shall never forgive them for this. (Wiesel 39) This ... Show more

A trait that was changed from Eliezer is the fact that he now thinks of himself, instead of others.
Hence, when it says in the book, I tried to protect myself from the blows by hiding behind others.
(Night 40) This shows that after Eliezer has been in the concentration camp for a long time, he starts
to let other people be beat, and take shots in order to preserve his own well being. He changed in order
to protect himself from the nazis, and to stop from not surviving. Another thing that Eliezer changed in
order to survive was his protectiveness over his father. When it says in the book, I had made my mind
to accompany my father wherever he went. This helps to show that Eliezer feels more fond of his
father, and he knows that if he dies, his father will die too. Therefore Eliezer accompanies his father
everywhere to stay close to him, and to go on with him in order to keep him alive, and make sure he is

When an economy is suffering, people will look for an entity or person to blame yes, but they also
eagerly and sometimes blindly accept what they might justify as the lesser of two evils. In this case,
Evil is identified and there is nothing lesser about it. In the early 1900 s what they found changed and
also ended the lives of millions. World War II and the hardship it brought upon Germany was just the
tool that one man in particular took advantage of for his own personal gain and ideology. Born in
Australia in 1889, Aldoph Hitler came to be one of the most famed and later despised person s in
human history. Many have written about his life and what he accomplished or yet, what he did. Many
have tried to explain the why in hopes that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had pictures of himself plastered everywhere. Children were forced to praise and honor his image
in school and speeches were broadcast over the air, TV and in the streets. This behavior reminds me of
how cult leaders of today find their victims or followers; they exploit person s weaknesses and offer a
solution, a better way of life and a feeling of uniqueness or belonging. Hitler seized this opportunity to
claim that the democratic system had failed the German people and that the Nazis were their only
hope (Why, 2013). Almost everyone is guilty of adding a little fluff to a statement or claim in order to
make it more believable or agreeable. Take this same situation presented twice, using a different
approach each time. Wife says to husband, We need to talk (Imagine her arms folded, jaw slightly
extended forward in an assertive manner). How willingly do you think the husband will be to give her
100% of his attention and be in good spirits about it? Instead imagine the situation approached like
this: Wife says, Husband, there is something I need your help with (one hand outstretched to hold his,
a smile on her face instead of a glare). Hitler knew how to use power words, how to sell himself like a
used car salesman in order to win favor and even how to present a boldfaced lie and have it believed.
When favor wasn t granted, intimidation was his fallback plan. In a Reichstag speech on April 28,

The Theme Of Acceptance In Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
Viewed by children full of life and elderly folks barely holding on, acceptance is witnessed. It is
expressed through an individual s actions, words, or silence. Acceptance plays a role when
understanding another s religion, values, and opinions. It can be found not only in society, but in
literature and media. In The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson, she shows us an example of blind acceptance
through her main event and desperate character, Tessie Hutchinson. In Texas V. Johnson Majority
Opinion, by William J. Brennan, Texas expresses acceptance. Also in What, of This Goldfish, Would
You Wish, by Etgar Keret, acceptance is interpreted through a lonesome character by the name of
Sergei. All three authors focus on the subject of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

that Gregory Lee Johnson is protected by the guidelines of our Constitution and they may look down
upon the people that decide to burn our nation s flag, but those that perform these acts cannot be jailed
or fined. Sergei from the short story, What of This Goldfish, Would You Wish, by Etgar Keret, is
forced to acknowledge what his friendship truly is and accept the parts that come into play with this
friendship. Sergei is a man that moved from his home in Russia to Israel and then Jaffa. He did not
want for people to come banging on his door or ask him how his day was. This was all true for Sergei
Until one day some kid with a ring in his ear . . . comes knocking (Keret 5). This child was a
determined young man named, Yoni. He knocked on the door asking questions, the way Sergei hated,
and was denied answers. Although being told no, the boy slipped into the home of Sergei Goralick and
began filming with his camera. Mr. Goralick is startled, but soon goes completely mad and knocks
Yoni over the head with a stove burner once he reaches to close to his magic goldfish. Knocking out

The Importance Of Memory And Working Memory
The study conducted by Gregory J. Spillers examined the length to which attention control abilities,
secondary memory abilities, or both work in the working memory capacity. Participants were asked to
perform numerous attention control, secondary memory, working memory and fluid intelligence
measures. Conformity factor analysis later suggested that attention control, secondary memory, and
working memory capacity were best represented as three separate yet mutually factors. And each
attention control, secondary memory, and working memory capacity are correlated with fluid
intelligence. Both attention control and secondary memory are viewed for unique variance in the
working memory capacity. Additionally a crucial part of the shared variance between working
memory capacity and fluid intelligence is brought upon attention control and secondary memory
abilities. This is seen through structural equation modeling. The point of the study was to examine
whether the working memory capacity is best interpreted by secondary memory processes, attention
control or both. A latent variable method was used to study the relations with working memory
capacity, attention control, secondary memory, and fluid intelligence. Attention control measures
antisaccade, which is voluntary eye movement when stimulus is presented, this measurement has
shown some spect in which it highy relates to a variation in the working memory capacity. It was

Essay On The Movie Hamlet
In a shocking turn of events, by the grace of God, director and actor Kenneth Branagh made a two
hundred and forty two minute Shakespeare movie watchable. We begin with a wedding celebration
between Claudius, Hamlet s uncle, and Hamlet s mother. Hamlet s father, the King, has suddenly died
an untimely death. The colors in this scene are bright and white, the color of innocents and newborns.
Flower petals are descending from the ceiling in joy, and everyone is cheering. From there, we pan
over to a solitary figure in the hallway, Hamlet. Hamlet, clad in black, watches the kingdom rejoice at
the celebration while he is still in mourning for his late father. As a viewer, we realize here that the
subject of this scene is not the extravagant wedding, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hamlet has a very convoluted plot. It begins with Hamlet seeing his father s ghost and telling Hamlet
that he was wrongfully murdered by his own brother, the new king of Denmark. His father s ghost
asks Hamlet to avenge him and take back the crown. This scene really sends Hamlet down the rabbit
hole because we know later on in the film that he has a difficult time pursuing his uncle, Claudius
(played by Derek Jacobi). The prince of Denmark goes through madness, murder, an unsure love
interest, he directs a play, conspires against friends, and finally gets revenge against his uncle, but not
without killing almost everyone in the movie. As mentioned earlier, Ophelia (played by Kate Winslet)
is a young and beautiful lady who is in love with Hamlet. However, her father and brother tell her to
stay away from Hamlet because he only sees her as an object of lust. We see more of Ophelia in this
movie then we do in the play. In the actual play, it mostly focuses on Hamlet and his madness, but in
Branagh s film version we get to see the effect Hamlet has on everyone. This includes the new king,
Claudius who is seen as a vicious and cunning serpent. Hamlet s sweet and gentle mother, the queen,
was thrown into a plague over her worry for Hamlet and his sanity. Other characters include Polonius,
Laertes, Horatio, and Fortinbras, all who contribute to Hamlet s downfall or witness

Government-Funded Independent Schools Essays
An analysis of charter schools government funded independent schools that offer either a special
theme or are required to meet a particular performance indicator (Davies Guppy, 2006) as an
alternative to mainstream public education reveals that charter schools should be notnot be supported
for several reasons. First, in terms of academic performance, there is little evidence that charter school
students fare better than public school students (Murphy, 2003). Second, as new providers of
education, advocates claim charter schools bring innovative and fresh new thinking to schooling
practices (Davies Guppy, 2006), but research has found there is weak evidence to support such a
claim. Finally, proponents of charter schools and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is opposed to the one size fits all approach of the public education system (Davies Guppy, 2006).
Consequently, student learning and performance should increase. However, there is little evidence to
support this claim; studies have found that improvements in learning are not significant and are similar
to the achievement gains in regular public schools (Murphy, 2003).
The absence of an alleged increase in academic achievement in charter schools compared to public
schools is further supported by a study on the results of the 2003 National Assessment of Educational
Progress (NAEP) mathematics exam in the U.S. The study compared the math scores of 190,000
fourth graders and 153,000 eight graders students from 13,577 public, private and charter schools
(Lubienski Lubienski, 2006). As opposed to reading, math is more influenced by school than home
experiences and thus, math scores offer better insights into the performance of different types of
schools relative to one another (Lubienski Lubienski, 2006). Once differences in location and
demographics were controlled, the study found that the fourth graders in charter schools actually
scored a statistically significant 4.4 points lower than public schools, but eight graders in charter
schools scored a statistically insignificant 2.4 points higher than public schools (Lubienski Lubienski,
2006). Clearly, the findings of this study refute

today s complex, collaborative and highly technical business environment, a degree in business or at

applications into sales platforms make it difficult to succeed in business without a thorough grounding
in modern sales, marketing and financing techniques, experienced engineers often succeed in business
without receiving formal educations on standard business practices. The United States encourages this

a family member begins to place the veteran s health, welfare and needs before their own, they can

Sacrifice In The Industrial Revolution
Sacrifice in Manchester
Like a coin with two sides, world history is comprised of both positive and negative events. One such
historical juncture occurred with the eighteenth century Industrial Revolution which began in Great
Britain. This movement focused on transitioning manufacturing from simple hand production to more
complex methods utilizing machine tools, chemical manufacturing, iron production and use of steam
power. With its new factories and mills, Manchester was one city that was greatly impacted during this
innovative time. Although the Industrial Revolution led to several technological advancements which
allowed the economy of Manchester and other areas of the world to thrive, this movement negatively
impacted the city s vast working class by stifling their social mobility and quality of life as well as
degrading their living conditions. The Industrial Revolution created opportunities for cities to prosper
and as industrialization popularized, Manchester established a name for itself. As the enclosure
movement forced countless farmers out of work, people flocked to the city where newly built factories
offered a plethora of jobs. Manchester bustled with business and surrounding areas wanted to work
with them because, ... no part of England, not even London, presents such remarkable and attractive

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Individual...
The evidence for genetic contribution to individual intelligence are (1) Family studies indicate that
intelligence occurs in families, (2) Twin studies illustrate a greater link within identical twins in IQ
than between non identical, or fraternal , twins. This is true even when identical twins raised apart are
contrasted with fraternal twins reared together. (3) Adoption studies suggest that adopted children are
slightly comparable to their biological parents in intelligence.
The focus here is on differences and similarities and the extent in which they are created by genetic
effects, in contrast to environmental influences. Because family components are genetically similar,

So, twin studies suggest that genes play a very important role, but are not the only factor, since if they
were; the correlation between identical twins would be 1.
Identical twins raised in separate environments are almost as similar in g measurements as those raised
together. Adopted children and their adoptive parents have a g correlation of zero, of course, while
adopted children and their biological parents are likely to have the same correlations as any parent
child set. So although genes do not seem to be the sole factor mediating intelligence, their effects do
seem to be unvarying and likely not superseded by environment.
In this way, twin studies give psychologists greater insight into the role of genes in intelligence.
Critics of twin studies suggest that twin similarities may be a result of chance rather than evidence of
heredity at work. Also, because adopted twin children tend to be placed in similar settings, critics
suggest that the trait similarities may be a matter of comparable experience rather than one of heredity.
Adoption studies allow psychologists to decide on the influence of genetics and environment on
human development by determining whether adopted children are more like their biological parents,
who provide their genetic makeup, or their adoptive parents, who provide the environmental
influences. These studies show that

The Effects Of Soda On High School Vending Machines...
You may be familiar with recent regulation, which was initiated for the 2014 15 school year, where the
United States Department of Agriculture enforced regulatory guidelines on food items sold in schools
across the nation. Although there was previously a nutritional requirement for food in school, as
Marion Nestle, a Professor of Nutrition at New York University, points out in her very influential
article of the time, this requirement [did] not apply to foods sold outside of school cafeterias in snack
bars, school stores, or vending machines (Nestle 308). Many proponents of the recent regulation are
astonished that such regulation was not in place from the beginning. Unfortunately, this action was
influenced by an ever rising concern for the obesity rate in the US population, and not a desire to
proactively encourage a healthy lifestyle. The history of soda in high school vending machines carries
with it heavy economic interest, a plethora of lobbying and some imperative details, which we may
find useful in our consideration of diet soda. Coca Cola and PepsiCo are the two major companies that
compete in the soft drink arena. By the late 1990s these companies were already well established in
high school vending machines, but the competitive market required quite a bit more action (Nestle
310). In fact the companies began to, as Nestle claims, view school children as an attractive marketing
opportunity, and use every possible means to promote their products to this young,

As we known, The Trump Organization runs a lot of business all around the US. When Donald Trump
moves into the White House, he ll be the most controversial president in America history. After Trump
is the president, his business interest is related to the politic. But there is no law and rules that asks a
president to split his financial interests before he takes the president position. In past few period,
presidents got away from the business to avoid the conflicts. Trump has no way to put his real estate
empire aside. Obvious, he would involve his business into the future politic policy.
Democrats aware this conflicts of the interest. But they can t call official hearings. But they will keep
the eyes on him. Also, if necessary, they can do investigations to avoid the conflicts of the interest.
In addition, Trump is expressing an interest in a major infrastructure plan, equal pay for women, and
closing the interest tax rate. These acts could give him a benefits, but they are good for the country.
The infrastructure plan, such as highway, could improve the people life. Tax plan keeps the money in

Cell Theory Evolution
Biologists use the ideas of cell theory, hereditary and genetics, and evolution through natural selection
in many different ways. While being very different areas of study, they all share a core idea. This idea
is that cells duplicate, and sometimes experience random mutations. From this very basic idea,
scientists can theorize that all life on earth came from one or a few very simple cells, and are related
through this. But the diversity of life today also shows how these related cell groups evolved and
changed.
Cell theory is the scientific knowledge that cells can only come from other cells. Years ago, when the
idea of spontaneous generation was disproved, a new theory came into play and allowed scientists to
learn that cells split and duplicate, sometimes experiencing random genetic mutations. This led to the
question: if all cells come from other cells, then where did the very first cell come from? Some
scientists believe that perhaps spontaneous generation happened once, billions of years ago, to start
the chain of life. Others theorize that the first cells came from an asteroid from another planet. The
first cells split and grew and split and grew, until they started to mutate and ... Show more content on

been revolutionary due to its responsiveness to the growing diversity in consumer tastes. The easy

Similarities Between Tell Me A Riddle And The Rocking...
Tell Me A Riddle and The Rocking Horse Winner are similar stories as they both focus primarily on
the lives and hardships of the mothers and their eldest children in the story. Tillie Olsen s story Tell
Me A Riddle can be compared to DH Lawrence s The Rocking Horse Winner with similarities in
theme. Both Olsen and Lawrence focus on the theme of neglect and abandonment driven by the lack
of attention the eldest children receive from their mothers. However Olsen addresses this theme
through symbolism whereas Lawrence uses personification. The new idea that is revealed about
neglect and abandonment through the analysis is that it can be both intentional and unintentional and
can be interpreted differently by different characters.
In both Tell Me A Riddle and The Rocking Horse Winner Olsen and Lawrence use the theme of
neglect and abandonment to describe the relationship between the eldest children in the story and their
mothers. For example in Tell Me A Riddle Emily feels abandoned by her mother after the birth of her
sister. This is because her mother could no longer care for Emily which led her to send Emily to the
convasalent home. It states I used to try to hold and love her after she came back, but her body would
stay stiff, and after a while she would push away (Olsen,4). At this point Emily is separated from her
family for eight months, not being able to hold on to personal belongings that remind and connect her
to them. Emily feelings of abandonment is evident here as

Robert Frost: Modern Multiplicity
Robert Frost is a multiple poet.
Louis Untermeyer
What is customary and, therefore, stereotypical of modern artistic thought is the belief that only one
central meaning can be gathered from any one reading; that these singular interpretations support, give
credence and justify hegemonic forces or grand narratives in society. Defining the term modern in his
work The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge, Jean Francois Lyotard designate[s] this
name and movement to any science ... legitimat[ing] itself ... [by] making an explicit appeal to some
grand narrative (xxiii). It is thus to the disgust of postmodernists to find Robert Frost s name, poems
and poetry listed with such a narrow minded, self aggrandizing, so called sophisticated group (like
T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound and Amy Lowell) since Frost was not a poet who believed science and
language nor the source of science and language to be singular, but rather ulterior, double speaking or
multiplicitous. In short, Frost believed duplicity or duplicitous interpretations should be drawn out of
the reader with the help of the author through the medium of poetic form which, to him, paradoxically
eliminates the author s influence on the reader.
A sample of Frost s multiplicity or multiplicitous form can be extracted from the opening line of one
of his last well known poems Directive whose first line begins Back out

Tyranny In Macbeth
Effects of Tyranny in Macbeth and The Winter s Tale
Shakespeare uses the device of tyranny to drive the plots of various plays through turmoil and the
conquering of such destructive actions and to drive the characters towards madness and other
unfortunate ends and for others to rise above them. One of the central foundations of these plays and
the use of tyranny is how it effects the women of these plays. Forcing them to follow the male leads
either down the path of desire for power strong enough that it can only lead them finally to insanity, or
to attempt to stand as righteous before the oppressing character and be led to their own demise. This is
especially clear in Macbeth and The Winter s Tale, where the characters are driven into either ... Show

As such the acts of tyranny are not the central focus of the play, they are the catalyst of the plot but not
the driving force. Within this play the acts of tyranny are what sets the events of the world into
motion. And as like in Macbeth the natural world does respond to these acts of tyranny ...brought the
seal d up oracle, by the hand deliver d of great Apollo s preist; and that, since then, you have not dared
to break the holy seal nor read the secrets in t... Hermione is chaste; Polixenes blameless; Camillo a
true subject; Leontes a jealous tyrant; his innocent babe truly begotten; and the king shall live without
an heir, if that which is lost is not found. (The Winter s Tale 3.2.128 135) The natural order of the
world has thus been interrupted by Leontes jealousy of his wife and Polixenes and this is the point
where the world, through the vehicle of the gods, tries to set the balance straight in the face of tyranny.
However, as Leontes ignores this message the tragic events are set into motion as the Prince dies
immediately after his father s decision to ignore the heavens and Hermione dies soon after that Apollo
s angry; and the heavens themselves do strike my injustices...Apollo, pardon my great profaneness

The Is The Most Important Factor Of A Movement
Last but not least, supporters of BLM should be brought to discussion, as they are the most important
factor of a movement. It is undeniable that BLM has received considerable support from a lot of
celebrities. One of them, an American actor and film producer, Samuel L. Jackson has challenged the
celebrities to go one step further as he posted a video on his public Facebook page asking famous
figures who took the Ice Bucket Challenge over the summer to join the protest: All you celebrities out

from celebrities helps BLM become more and more influential. However, it is true that BLM has
failed to receive it from the most important people. Although BLM tries to speak out for black

Cold War Vs Terrorism
The Cold War and the War on Terrorism both have similar and different events that make each war
important to think about. The U.S. has dealt with the Cold War for decades and today the War on
Terrorism continues since 2001. However, the viewpoints of culture, society and other variables
change how each war was or is viewed. Tactics used by the U.S. varied for each war and we will look
closer at those tactics. We also need to consider if the approach for the War on Terrorism is even the
right one? First let s learn a little more on each war and then we will compare and contrast them. In

Communism while the fight against Terrorism started with the attack of 9/11. Both wars affect the

During the Cold War people feared and hated the Communist nations. So how is the U.S. handling the

The Little Rock Crisis Essay
The Little Rock Crisis
Research Paper Imagine for a moment being put in the president s shoes and having to make a
decision that affects the whole country. Imagine that the decision you made is not very popular and
that you get criticized and scoffed at for it. During the term of each president, there are many difficult
decisions that must be made. Making these types of decisions may be difficult, but they are necessary
to the benefit of the country. President Eisenhower was faced with a very difficult decision. While
facing his decision he wanted to uphold the Constitution and the laws, but also avoid a difficult
confrontation with people who had very high emotions. Eisenhower did not want to be criticized by
those who felt he did not ensure civil rights, as well as those who believed he had gone too far in
asserting federal power over the states. The difficult decision that Eisenhower faced to send in Federal
Troops to Little Rock, Arkansas showed his support for the Constitution, and for the protection of the
people, even though it was not popular and went against his own personal beliefs.

a. Hexagram The I Ching book consists of 64 hexagrams.[2] [3] A hexagram is a figure composed of
six stacked horizontal lines (爻 yáo), where each line is either Yang (an unbroken, or solid line), or Yin
(broken, an open line with a gap in the center). The hexagram lines are traditionally counted from the
bottom up, so the lowest line is considered line one while the top line is line six. Hexagrams are
formed by combining the original eight trigrams in different combinations. Each hexagram is
accompanied with a description, often cryptic, akin to parables. Each line in every hexagram is also ...

Ren has been rendered into English in various ways such as: benevolence, man to manness, perfect
virtue, human heartedness, and, as in our textbook, humanity. It has been regarded as the defining
virtue of a junzi/gentlemen and the ultimate commitment in Confucius thought. However, Confucius
never intends to offer a formal definition of ren; instead, he gives only various answers to questions
about ren in different circumstances for students with different temperaments and with varying
degrees of understanding.
f. yi (in the Analects) Yi is another important virtue through which ren is cultivated. Confucius stresses
yi as necessary for developing ren.
Unlike li as external rituals and rules of propriety, yi is internal virtue, a moral disposition to do what
is right and an ability to recognize what is right; yi functions like a kind of moral sense or intuition
regarding action. Like Kant s conception of good will and duty, what is according to yi unconditional
and absolute; some actions must be performed only because they are right, and not because of what
they produce. On the other hand, unlike Kant, yi is not something that has nothing to do with
inclination, disposition or intuition.
As far as the relation between yi and li is concerned, cultivating yi is carried out through observing li.
The superior person regards righteousness (yi) as the substance of everything.

The Failure Of Freedom In Arthur Miller s The Crucible
For the past 20 years, Americans have watched as the news displayed more and more headlines about
massacres, scandals, and acts of terror. In addition, pictures of rallies and protests, similar to Edelson s
portrayal of the protests in Berkeley, California, have flooded the newspapers. All of these recurring
events instill a strong sense of fear into the American public. If America touts itself as being the land
of the free and the home of the brave, why do its inhabitants feel powerless and vulnerable? Social
critic, H.L. Mencken states that the average man does not want to be free, and behind the facade of
freedom, he simply wants to be safe. Through examples in Arthur Miller s The Crucible, the
overbearing weight which fear has on one s life is extremely evident. In addition, Robert J. Samuelson
s support of Trump s proposal for a wall running along the Mexican American border in his article
Yes, Build the Wall, is a clear example of the extent to which Americans in contemporary society are
willing to go to protect themselves from any possible threat. Although the average man craves the
freedom to live according to his own wishes, one is willing to ultimately give up those desires in order
to live in a bubble of safety, suppressing any fragment of fear. Although one is inclined to live a
sheltered life in the bubble that is safety, one truly craves freedom. Freedom is the one of the core
values on which this country was built. The founding fathers who formed

Are People Inherently Good Or Evil
The concept of whether or not humans are inherently good or evil is as complex and just as regularly
debated by philosophers as to whether or not there is an afterlife. Now if we temporarily ignore the
grey scale that is moral and immoral and the fluctuations it may have based on individual morals and
instead use a generalisation of what is good and bad, (this consisting of the obvious murder, rape etc)
we can freely debate if human nature is inherently good or evil. There are some philosophers like
Clancy Martin who argue that people are mostly good but there are also others like Alan Strudler who
are more pessimistic and comeback with The idea that people are good because they do mostly good
things makes sense only on a desperately low ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This compelling piece of literature explores the idea of two worlds; the world of light and the world of
darkness. The world of light is described by Sinclair as The parental home...its name was Mother and
father, it was love and strictness, education and example. What belonged to this world was gently
shining radiance, clarity, and cleanliness; quiet friendly conversation; washed hands, clean clothes,
good behaviour. (Hesse 1919, p.3) To be direct this parental world consisted of his home and the
church; all that was seen as good, pure and moral. While the other world was the opposite and
everything outside the home on the streets and the public schools. Sinclair firsts extends his hand to
the other world when he lies about stealing apples in order to impress a young boy named Kromer
which causes Sinclair to torment himself and thus allows Kromer to do the same when he blackmails
him. This is where Sinclair meets his first mentor, Max Demian. This mentor taught Sinclair many
wonders and causes him to go into a bout of self discovery. After years of switching between the two
worlds, he discovers a god named Abraxas. Damian had once discussed with Sinclair the God Jehovah
and how everything that is pure and sacred is given to him while everything that is sinful is seen as the
devils. He explains that he believes both worlds should be worshipped as a whole and you must either
find a god that is both the Father and the devil or have two gods. This is why the god Abraxas
intrigues Sinclair to such a degree as he is the god that reigns over both heavenly and demonic; the
combination of the two worlds. This ancient Greek and Egyptian deity shows Sinclair and the reader
that a person should not be so concerned and concentrated on immoral

Stereotypical Fairytale And Relative Peace
When a child does something wrong, an older, wiser adult is always there to scold them for the
wrongdoing. Inevitably, they are then forced to accept the punishment and guilt that it bears. However,
when they transform into an adult, they are the old, wise adult, and no one is there to scold them. It
must be found within themselves to discern the sin committed and hold the guilt within their own
hearts, but then also forgive themselves for it, of which it is much easier to do as a child. If
unforgiven, the guilt manifests itself within their being, slowly monopolizing on their lives until they
become a mere shell of their prior beings, scarcely able to survive daily life with the blanket of guilt
weighing down so heavily upon them. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Barely under this facade of composure and innocence, unbeknownst to him, was his rapidly expanding
feeling of dishonor. Not only had he committed an act so unspeakable for the time, but he had also
failed to admit this fault to those who held his holiness above all else. In this way, he felt he had
betrayed the townspeople, of whom he knew their countless sins, and the only person who could ever
truly forgive him: God. As a result of these unforgivable crimes, Dimmesdale subjected himself to a
torture brought about by his own inability to forgive himself for the crimes committed. Only a short
while into his self flagellation, the decaying of his physical well being became apparent to any and all
onlookers, as the text states, he was often observed, on any slight alarm or other sudden accident, to
put his hand over his heart, with first a flush and then a paleness, indicative of pain, (Hawthorne 108).
This quotation exemplifies the obvious change in Dimmesdale s demeanor, while also creating a
connection between mind and body. With such a guilt fueling his need to gain redemption, he turned
to pain as a way to relieve the unshakeable ailment he invariably felt. However, this did not achieve
anything as his mental state further deteriorated and his physical conditions followed suit, to the point
that he was scarcely able to bear his own weight or

Literary Allusion In The Works Of Robert Frost s Design
Poet, Robert Frost, in his poem, Design, delineates a spider s meal atop a medicinal flower. In Design,
Frost questions the nature and existence of God, whether or not the world is harshly meaningless or
coldly calculated, through his use of literary allusions, personal point of view, and contrasting
imagery. Literary allusions aid Frost in constructing his inquiry against religion, citing the works of
Epicurus and Shakespeare. The Riddle of Epicurus is especially prominent, What but design of
darkness to appall? (Frost, 13). This line calls into question the nature of God, paralleling the Riddle
of Epicurus by insinuating that if God is willing and able to alter the world then he is evil and
undeserving of worship. Again, Frost alludes to Epicurus when the narrator wonders if such a
paradoxical God even exists. In addition to citing ancient literature, Frost also references the more
recent play Macbeth, Like the ingredients of a witches broth (Frost, 6). This quotation illustrates the
calculated and cruel design aspect of the Epicurean Paradox, because it is improbable that these three
albino creatures would converge in the same place so Frost asks if it is design, or coincidence, leaving
the audience to choose between the two horrifying alternatives. The Macbeth allusion also enhances
the crisp, paralyzing tone of the poem because of its own tone, morbid and melancholic, as well as
engaging the reader by referencing familiar works. Philosophical and Shakespearean allusions in
Design assist Robert Frost in creating a questioning tone which in turn provokes the reader to question
the true nature of God as well. The ending of Design is ambiguous, leaving the audience to draw their
own conclusions about religion, a result which was achieved through first person point of view, which
causes the ambivalence of the poem to resonate with the reader. Frost questions,
What brought the kindred spider to that height, Then steered the white moth thither in the night?
(Frost, 11 12).
Through this query, the poet engages the reader and causes them to question in their own right, is God
malevolent or does he not exist? By employing this perspective, the audience sympathizes and
identifies

Unlocking The Vault Summary
In the magazine, I read Unlocking the Vault an article by Carlin Flora. She depicts that people are
hiding secrets from others and most of all, themselves. Not all secrets are necessarily bad things such
as cheating, but could be information that the person can use as leverage. We keep secrets because of
shame and to avoid hurting others. Keeping secrets can be a destructive act towards not only you, but
of others as well. I believe this article definitely appeals to all modes of persuasion because it is
something that everyone has or will deal with some time in their lives. With ethos, people will look
over their values. Some will keep their secret from others because they value the relationship with
those group or people. Then you have

Diabetic Retinopathy
1. Briefly define the following parts of the eye and their role in vision:
A. Optic Nerve: each of the second pair of cranial nerves, transmitting impulses
to the brain from the retina at the back of the eye.
It is where energy is converted into electrical energy so it can travel to the brain and trigger
responses. The optic nerve is a continuation of rods and cones which make up the retina.
However, at its head, there is a blind spot because there are no photoreceptors in this part of
the optic nerve. This blind spot does not cause problems for people when seeing.
B. Macula: an oval yellowish(means that it absorbs blue and violet light which would
harm the retina thus acting as a protector/ sunblock for the retina.

However, even patients with controlled diabetes can develop diabetic retinopathy.
It is important for diabetic patients to be examined yearly because there are no
symptoms of diabetic retinopathy so early detection and treatment can help reduce the
risk of permanent vision loss. two forms of diabetic retinopathy:
Nonproliferative: this is where exisiting blood vessels in the retina completely deteriorate. These
deteriorated blood vessels can become blocked or develop into aneurysms. Then fats, fluids,
and proteins leak out of the abnormal blood vessels. The fluids then collect in the retina and
cause the macula to swell, this is called edema. Edema impairs the vision responsible for
seeing fine detail and reading.
Proliferative: This is where new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina which cause
small hemorrhages and bleeding. This causes scar formation which allows the clear gel of the
vitreous to adhere to the retina. This puts pressure on the shape of the vitreous causing it to
change its shape and tear the retina causing retinal detachment. It can treated can be treated
three ways:
Photcoagulation: A focal is used to burn the areas of the retina where the abnormal

Freedom In Boy s Life By Corey Kienson
One similar theme in each text is the idea of freedom. In Boy s Life, the main character, Corey, feels
trapped inside of his classroom on the last day of school. All he wants is to begin his summer vacation,
where he is free from the burden of books, facts and figures, and dates and quotations. In paragraph 8
he s dying to get out of class and shows major impatience when the class down the hallway is let out
early. He even says, My insides quaked at the injustice of it. Freedom is also a theme in the fable
because the story is about an animal born into a cage, and this animal has never experienced freedom.
In fact, the animal saw above and about him confining walls, and before him were bars of iron. The
theme of freedom is present through the voice of the narrator, Corey Mackenson, in Boy s Life. The
theme is immediately developed through the use of onomatopoeia and repetition of paragraphs 1, 3,
and 6 saying, Tick...tick...tick. The narrator takes on the attitude of an average school boy on the last
day of school. He s dying to begin his summer adventures where he and his friends are free from the
burdens created by school. This is shown in paragraph 5 where he states, The world was out there,
waiting beyond the square metal rimmed windows. The narrator is obviously ... Show more content on

about freedom he can hardly contain himself, My heart was a frog leaping out of murky water into

freedom after he accidently escapes his cage when, On he rushes, in his mad flight, heedless that he is
wounding and tearing his sleek sides seeing, smelling, touching of all things. Both Corey and the
animal find great joy and adventure in their

Alternative Lumber Harvesting Methods Like Shelterwood
The U.S. Lumber Industry is one of the largest industries in the U.S., employing more than 1.4 million
people and producing products valued at more than $200 billion every year according to the USDA
(2004). The US Forest Industry is unique in that their methods for harvesting lumber are closely
scrutinized by private organizations, sectors of the U.S. government, as well as internally by the
logging companies themselves. In many areas, old techniques and methods are being discarded and
researchers are struggling to keep up. Forests of the Pacific Northwest have primarily been harvested
with clear cutting systems. Clear cutting systems lead to many ecological issues such as poor
aesthetics, habitat disturbance, increased streamflow, and soil erosion among others (Bliss 2000).
Alternative lumber harvesting methods like Shelterwood (Matthews 1989) and Group Selection
systems have been developed as different approaches to Silvicultural maintenance. The proposed
benefits of these approaches as alternatives to clearcutting include; greater forest biodiversity, greater
aesthetic quality, improved forest regeneration and greater future timber fields of that area. In order to
effectively determine the feasibility of the alternate lumber harvesting systems of Shelterwood
Systems Group Selection Cutting, long term observation of forest regeneration is needed. Forest
regeneration is key in determining the success of any silvicultural system. This paper will look at
forest regeneration

  • 2. Examples Of Digging By Seamus Heaney Death of a Naturalist was concerned with the notion of growing up and loss of innocence. Seamus Heaney describes the childhood experience differently as the child grows and changes perception of nature from love to fear. Similarly, in Digging , Heaney presents himself as a child who studies through writing, in contrast to his father and his grandfather who dig into the ground. Heaney s father and grandfather use their shovels to work with the land, while Heaney uses his pen to write poetries. It is clear that Heaney is not going to follow his father s legacy, digging , he is going to have a different profession. Also, By God , this implies Heaney s amazement and it grabs readers attention and shows how much admiration Heaney has for his father and grandfather s digging skill. This makes the reader feel empathetic because just working does not simply mean it is important, but tradition too to work as part of the family tradition and carry father s ... • 3. Differences in Crime Statistics in the Uniform Crime... Arguments over crime statistics have been raging ever since governments began counting criminal activity. In 1930 the United States congress authorized the attorney general of the United States to survey crime in America. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was chosen to implement the program. (Schmalleger p.38) The Uniform Crime Reports is the survey taken by the FBI. This measure of crime in America depends on reports to the police by victims of crimes. The UCR Program was developed by the FBI for the purpose of serving law enforcement as a tool for operational and administrative purposes. Through the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the UCR Program was developed. Later, the National Sheriffs Association ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Arson is an exception to the Hierarchy Rule . One of the problems with the Uniform Crime Reports is that many citizens do not always make official reports. For example, many women refuse to report rapes because they do not want to relive the ordeal. Some citizen s feel that the police will not be able to do anything about a crime committed against them therefore they do not report it. Another problem with the Uniform Crime Reports is that Victimless crimes are rarely reported. These are crimes like prostitution, gambling, and drug use. Since many of these crimes are not reported, then the UCR becomes somewhat vague and incomplete. When reviewing crime data, it is important for the reader to note the difference between offenses and arrests. Offenses relate to events and arrests relate to persons. A single offense may involve no arrestees; may involve one arrestee; or may involve many arrestees. National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is the Nation s primary source of information on criminal victimization. Twice each year, data are obtained from a nationally representative sample of roughly 49,000 households comprising about 100,000 persons on the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of criminal victimization in the United States. The survey reports the likelihood of victimization by rape, sexual assault, robbery, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Compare And Contrast Plato And The Matrix Plato and The Matrix Compare and Contrast In comparing the movie The Matrix to Plato s The Allegory of the Cave, both have a theme of trying to find the truth. In the Matrix, Neo is confronted with a difficult choice. Either he can choose the blue pill and forget that Morpheus ever confronted him with such news of the Matrix or he can take the red pill and find out the truth, which is that he has been living in a simulated fantasy world. The Allegory of the Cave is similar in that Plato attempts to explain reality. There are some epistemology questions that occur in both situations such as, what is truth, how do we find it, and how reliable are our perceptions? The people that are prisoners in the cave cannot see the world beyond the cave except for glimmers of light reflecting off the wall and therefore believe that the cave is the real world when in fact if they could escape to the outer world they would realize that outside the cave, in the light, is actually the real world. Another example of comparison is Plato s two world belief, a world of being and a world of becoming. The contrasts between the Matrix and the excerpt from Plato are that in the Matrix, the perceived reality that Neo is experiencing is a better description of what the reality outside the Matrix actually is. Outside the Matrix, Neo discovers a very dark, chaotic, and weird place. Whereas, the cave depicted in Plato s story is a scary and dark place and his place of ultimate reality is in the light ... Hitler seized this opportunity to claim that the democratic system had failed the German people and that the Nazis were their only hope (Why, 2013). Spillers examined the length to which attention control abilities, secondary memory abilities, or both work in the working memory capacity. Participants were asked to perform numerous attention control, secondary memory, working memory and fluid intelligence measures. Conformity factor analysis later suggested that attention control, secondary memory, and working memory capacity were best represented as three separate yet mutually factors. Both attention control and secondary memory are viewed for unique variance in the working memory capacity. It begins with Hamlet seeing his father s ghost and telling Hamlet that he was wrongfully murdered by his own brother, the new king of Denmark. His father s ghost asks Hamlet to avenge him and take back the crown. This scene really sends Hamlet down the rabbit hole because we know later on in the film that he has a difficult time pursuing his uncle, Claudius (played by Derek Jacobi). The prince of Denmark goes through madness, murder, an unsure love interest, he directs a play, conspires against friends, and finally gets revenge against his uncle, but not without killing almost everyone in the movie. As mentioned earlier, Ophelia (played by Kate Winslet) is a young and beautiful lady who is in love with Hamlet. However, her father and brother tell her to stay away from Hamlet because he only sees her as an object of lust. We see more of Ophelia in this movie then we do in the play. This includes the new king, Claudius who is seen as a vicious and cunning serpent. Hamlet s sweet and gentle mother, the queen, was thrown into a plague over her worry for Hamlet and his sanity. The absence of an alleged increase in academic achievement in charter schools compared to public schools is further supported by a study on the results of the 2003 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) mathematics exam in the U.S. The study compared the math scores of 190,000 fourth graders and 153,000 eight graders students from 13,577 public, private and charter schools (Lubienski Lubienski, 2006). • 28. The Effects Of Soda On High School Vending Machines... You may be familiar with recent regulation, which was initiated for the 2014 15 school year, where the United States Department of Agriculture enforced regulatory guidelines on food items sold in schools across the nation. Although there was previously a nutritional requirement for food in school, as Marion Nestle, a Professor of Nutrition at New York University, points out in her very influential article of the time, this requirement [did] not apply to foods sold outside of school cafeterias in snack bars, school stores, or vending machines (Nestle 308). Many proponents of the recent regulation are astonished that such regulation was not in place from the beginning. Unfortunately, this action was influenced by an ever rising concern for the obesity rate in the US population, and not a desire to proactively encourage a healthy lifestyle. The history of soda in high school vending machines carries with it heavy economic interest, a plethora of lobbying and some imperative details, which we may find useful in our consideration of diet soda. Coca Cola and PepsiCo are the two major companies that compete in the soft drink arena. By the late 1990s these companies were already well established in high school vending machines, but the competitive market required quite a bit more action (Nestle 310). In fact the companies began to, as Nestle claims, view school children as an attractive marketing opportunity, and use every possible means to promote their products to this young, ... • 30. Cell Theory Evolution Biologists use the ideas of cell theory, hereditary and genetics, and evolution through natural selection in many different ways. While being very different areas of study, they all share a core idea. This idea is that cells duplicate, and sometimes experience random mutations. From this very basic idea, scientists can theorize that all life on earth came from one or a few very simple cells, and are related through this. But the diversity of life today also shows how these related cell groups evolved and changed. Cell theory is the scientific knowledge that cells can only come from other cells. Years ago, when the idea of spontaneous generation was disproved, a new theory came into play and allowed scientists to learn that cells split and duplicate, sometimes experiencing random genetic mutations. This led to the question: if all cells come from other cells, then where did the very first cell come from? Some scientists believe that perhaps spontaneous generation happened once, billions of years ago, to start the chain of life. Others theorize that the first cells came from an asteroid from another planet. The first cells split and grew and split and grew, until they started to mutate and ... Tell Me A Riddle and The Rocking Horse Winner are similar stories as they both focus primarily on the lives and hardships of the mothers and their eldest children in the story. Tillie Olsen s story Tell Me A Riddle can be compared to DH Lawrence s The Rocking Horse Winner with similarities in theme. Both Olsen and Lawrence focus on the theme of neglect and abandonment driven by the lack of attention the eldest children receive from their mothers. However Olsen addresses this theme through symbolism whereas Lawrence uses personification. The new idea that is revealed about neglect and abandonment through the analysis is that it can be both intentional and unintentional and can be interpreted differently by different characters. In both Tell Me A Riddle and The Rocking Horse Winner Olsen and Lawrence use the theme of neglect and abandonment to describe the relationship between the eldest children in the story and their mothers. For example in Tell Me A Riddle Emily feels abandoned by her mother after the birth of her sister. This is because her mother could no longer care for Emily which led her to send Emily to the convasalent home. All of these recurring events instill a strong sense of fear into the American public. If America touts itself as being the land of the free and the home of the brave, why do its inhabitants feel powerless and vulnerable? Social critic, H.L. Mencken states that the average man does not want to be free, and behind the facade of freedom, he simply wants to be safe. Through examples in Arthur Miller s The Crucible, the overbearing weight which fear has on one s life is extremely evident. In addition, Robert J. Although the average man craves the freedom to live according to his own wishes, one is willing to ultimately give up those desires in order to live in a bubble of safety, suppressing any fragment of fear. Only a short while into his self flagellation, the decaying of his physical well being became apparent to any and all onlookers, as the text states, he was often observed, on any slight alarm or other sudden accident, to put his hand over his heart, with first a flush and then a paleness, indicative of pain, (Hawthorne 108). This quotation exemplifies the obvious change in Dimmesdale s demeanor, while also creating a connection between mind and body. With such a guilt fueling his need to gain redemption, he turned to pain as a way to relieve the unshakeable ailment he invariably felt. However, this did not achieve anything as his mental state further deteriorated and his physical conditions followed suit, to the point that he was scarcely able to bear his own weight or ... • 46. Literary Allusion In The Works Of Robert Frost s Design Poet, Robert Frost, in his poem, Design, delineates a spider s meal atop a medicinal flower. In Design, Frost questions the nature and existence of God, whether or not the world is harshly meaningless or coldly calculated, through his use of literary allusions, personal point of view, and contrasting imagery. Literary allusions aid Frost in constructing his inquiry against religion, citing the works of Epicurus and Shakespeare. The Riddle of Epicurus is especially prominent, What but design of darkness to appall? (Frost, 13). This line calls into question the nature of God, paralleling the Riddle of Epicurus by insinuating that if God is willing and able to alter the world then he is evil and undeserving of worship. Again, Frost alludes to Epicurus when the narrator wonders if such a paradoxical God even exists. In addition to citing ancient literature, Frost also references the more recent play Macbeth, Like the ingredients of a witches broth (Frost, 6). This quotation illustrates the calculated and cruel design aspect of the Epicurean Paradox, because it is improbable that these three albino creatures would converge in the same place so Frost asks if it is design, or coincidence, leaving the audience to choose between the two horrifying alternatives. The Macbeth allusion also enhances the crisp, paralyzing tone of the poem because of its own tone, morbid and melancholic, as well as engaging the reader by referencing familiar works. Philosophical and Shakespearean allusions in Design assist Robert Frost in creating a questioning tone which in turn provokes the reader to question the true nature of God as well. The ending of Design is ambiguous, leaving the audience to draw their own conclusions about religion, a result which was achieved through first person point of view, which causes the ambivalence of the poem to resonate with the reader. Frost questions, What brought the kindred spider to that height, Then steered the white moth thither in the night? (Frost, 11 12). Through this query, the poet engages the reader and causes them to question in their own right, is God malevolent or does he not exist? By employing this perspective, the audience sympathizes and identifies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Unlocking The Vault Summary In the magazine, I read Unlocking the Vault an article by Carlin Flora. She depicts that people are hiding secrets from others and most of all, themselves. Not all secrets are necessarily bad things such as cheating, but could be information that the person can use as leverage. We keep secrets because of shame and to avoid hurting others. Keeping secrets can be a destructive act towards not only you, but of others as well. I believe this article definitely appeals to all modes of persuasion because it is something that everyone has or will deal with some time in their lives. With ethos, people will look over their values. Some will keep their secret from others because they value the relationship with those group or people. Then you have ... • 48. Diabetic Retinopathy 1. Briefly define the following parts of the eye and their role in vision: A. Optic Nerve: each of the second pair of cranial nerves, transmitting impulses to the brain from the retina at the back of the eye. It is where energy is converted into electrical energy so it can travel to the brain and trigger responses. The optic nerve is a continuation of rods and cones which make up the retina. However, at its head, there is a blind spot because there are no photoreceptors in this part of the optic nerve. This blind spot does not cause problems for people when seeing. B. Macula: an oval yellowish(means that it absorbs blue and violet light which would harm the retina thus acting as a protector/ sunblock for the retina. )area ... It is important for diabetic patients to be examined yearly because there are no symptoms of diabetic retinopathy so early detection and treatment can help reduce the risk of permanent vision loss. two forms of diabetic retinopathy: Nonproliferative: this is where exisiting blood vessels in the retina completely deteriorate. These deteriorated blood vessels can become blocked or develop into aneurysms. Then fats, fluids, and proteins leak out of the abnormal blood vessels. The fluids then collect in the retina and cause the macula to swell, this is called edema. Edema impairs the vision responsible for seeing fine detail and reading. Proliferative: This is where new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina which cause

  • 50. Freedom In Boy s Life By Corey Kienson One similar theme in each text is the idea of freedom. In Boy s Life, the main character, Corey, feels trapped inside of his classroom on the last day of school. All he wants is to begin his summer vacation, where he is free from the burden of books, facts and figures, and dates and quotations. In paragraph 8 he s dying to get out of class and shows major impatience when the class down the hallway is let out early. He even says, My insides quaked at the injustice of it. Freedom is also a theme in the fable because the story is about an animal born into a cage, and this animal has never experienced freedom. In fact, the animal saw above and about him confining walls, and before him were bars of iron. The theme of freedom is present through the voice of the narrator, Corey Mackenson, in Boy s Life. The theme is immediately developed through the use of onomatopoeia and repetition of paragraphs 1, 3, and 6 saying, Tick...tick...tick. The narrator takes on the attitude of an average school boy on the last day of school. He s dying to begin his summer adventures where he and his friends are free from the burdens created by school. This is shown in paragraph 5 where he states, The world was out there, waiting beyond the square metal rimmed windows. The narrator is obviously ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 51. Alternative Lumber Harvesting Methods Like Shelterwood The U.S. Lumber Industry is one of the largest industries in the U.S., employing more than 1.4 million people and producing products valued at more than $200 billion every year according to the USDA (2004). The US Forest Industry is unique in that their methods for harvesting lumber are closely scrutinized by private organizations, sectors of the U.S. government, as well as internally by the logging companies themselves. In many areas, old techniques and methods are being discarded and researchers are struggling to keep up. Forests of the Pacific Northwest have primarily been harvested with clear cutting systems. Clear cutting systems lead to many ecological issues such as poor aesthetics, habitat disturbance, increased streamflow, and soil erosion among others (Bliss 2000). Alternative lumber harvesting methods like Shelterwood (Matthews 1989) and Group Selection systems have been developed as different approaches to Silvicultural maintenance. The proposed benefits of these approaches as alternatives to clearcutting include; greater forest biodiversity, greater aesthetic quality, improved forest regeneration and greater future timber fields of that area. In order to effectively determine the feasibility of the alternate lumber harvesting systems of Shelterwood Systems Group Selection Cutting, long term observation of forest regeneration is needed. Forest regeneration is key in determining the success of any silvicultural system. This paper will look at forest regeneration ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
