A Defense Of Peter Singer s Famine Relief Argument

Introduction to Philosophy

A Defense of Peter Singer s Famine Relief Argument In his paper Famine affluence and morality ,
Peter Singer sought to provide response to a significant moral question: Is it morally permissible to
not donate to famine? Singer argued that we are morally obligated to famine relief. I am deeply
convinced by his argument. In this paper, I shall examine two significant objections to singer s
argument and explain why they would ultimately fail. Singer s original argument takes the following
form:
(P1) Suffering and death from lack of food, shelter and medical care are bad
(P2) If we can prevent something bad from happening without sacrificing anything of comparable
moral importance, then we are morally obligated to do so.
(P3) Death caused by famine is something bad that happens that we can prevent without sacrificing
anything of comparable moral importance (namely, by donating to famine relief).
(C) Therefore, we ought to donate to famine relief. Singer assumed premise 1 to be undoubtedly true,
which is manifested by his statement: It is difficult, perhaps impossible, to refute such positions, and
so for brevity I will henceforth take this assumption as accepted. (Singer, 2) Those who disagree need
read no further. To support the second premise of his argument, he provided the following situation:
Shallow Pond: Imagine that you are going to work. On your way to work, you see a child drowning in
a pond.

The Importance Of Restorative Justice
Last year in Chicago, there were nearly 800 homicides that took place throughout the city and that is
just Chicago alone! Imagine what the numbers would be like if you added up all the homicides that
took place in each state throughout the United States. It would be outrageous and that would only be
for our 50 states, it does not include other countries around our world. Crime rates are skyrocketing
and something needs to be done. For some of these offenders, receiving a harsh punishment and being
put in jail makes them realize what they have done and makes them want to better themselves once
they get out. On the other hand, other offenders serve their time, get released, and go right back to
their old ways, the ways that put them in jail in the first place. Punishment does not seem to work for
everyone; therefore a new approach must be put into action, this approach being restorative justice.
Restorative justice is a groundbreaking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Restorative justice can take place in places such as police stations, courtrooms, and prisons. Many of
the restorative justice programs take place in prisons because it relates to the victim offender
relationship. I believe a good place for restorative justice within the criminal justice system is in
prisons because the prisoners have nothing else to do so it is a good time for them to focus on that
practice and keep busy because there is much time to be dedicated to mending their offender (RJ in the
Criminal Justice System). But an even better process for restorative practice would be outside of the
criminal justice system in places such as schools, workplaces, faith communities, families, and
communities. Being somewhere outside of the criminal justice system gives the victim and offender
more privacy and makes them feel more comfortable which can help a lot when expressing and coping
with their

Fetus Should Not Have Rights
The fetus cannot possibly have rights because the fetus cannot be determine as a complete human and
no statics can back up 100% when human life begins without a doubt. We all assume we know but we
don t. It s our own opinion; therefore, we cannot determine the laws and rights on our opinion but we
can determine it on the fact that the mother is a human begin and has lived up the life. Besides the
fetus depends on the mother at all time during the pregnancy and after birth. The mother is the one
who is going to have to feed the child, clothes the child and change the child s diapers. The child
could not possibly do all of those things by itself; therefore, the child depends 100% at all times on the
mother. That is why the mother deserves those rights and need safety procedures if she decides to ...

Therefore, it is only right for the mother to have the right to determine what it is she wants without all
the negative perspective. No one is pointing fingers and saying it is anyone s fault, life happens that s
it. Of course the innocent unborn child should not have to pay for the crime of another but why should
the woman be remind every single day of what happened due to having the child. Not to mention why
would anyone want to be a child of a rapist or incest, also genetic runs deep who knows what if the
innocent child was to grow up and become its father the rapist or incest and repeat history, are pro life
supporters willing to take that risk and let that happen to someone else because that one would be on
them. Yes it is the state s reasonability to protect the rights of its citizens but the fetus is unborn
therefore it cannot possibly be a citizen. Abortion is legal because the government wants to protect the
rights of the woman and let them have a safe procedure instead of putting them at risk. Sure abortion
is murder but that isn t for pro life to determine what should happen to the

Differences Of The UEFA Champions League And The Super Bowl
Both the UEFA Champions League and Super Bowl in the United States are big sporting events both
nationally and internationally. There are several similarities between the opening ceremony of the
UEFA Champions League and that of the Super Bowl. One of the main similarities is that the two
events attract a huge number of fans. In the 2017 UEFA Champions League final, there were fans
drawn from both Real Madrid and Juventus. The final attracted many people as many people flocked
to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Similarly, many fans flock the Super Bowl event in the United
States. Another similarity is the fact that the two events feature artist s performances. The Black Eyed
Peas performed during the opening ceremony of the 2017 UEFA Champions League. Similarly, the
Super Bowl has in the past featured artists such as Lady Gaga.
There are however some differences between the two events. The UEFA Champions League attracted
more fans compared to the Super Bowl. UEFA Champions League commands a wider fan base
globally compared to the Super Bowl. Another difference is the fact that while the Super Bowl has
halftime performances, the UEFA Champions League only features opening performances. The UEFA
Champions League Final opening ceremony also trends more compared to NFL Super Bowl.
Commercial Sponsors
Several multinational companies sponsored the UEFA Champions League. According to the policies
of the league, not more than eight companies should only sponsor a match. The

Headscarf Controversy
French media coverage of the headscarf controversy perpetuates considerable misunderstanding of
Islam and thus the politics of secularism extend to media framing of the tension between religious
minorities and the non religious in a society where secular is hegemonic. In 1989, in a small town
outside of Paris, three girls were expelled for wearing Hijabs. The girls were in no way disruptive, or
incapable academically, however, the event became significant to the reframing of the headscarf as a
;veil; or misrepresentation as a chador through and by the media. Furthermore, public intellectuals in
the media promoted concerns regarding Iran type mobilisation in France. A similar incident occurred

An American computer scientist named John Backus once said, They don t like thinking in medical
school. They memorize that s all they want you to do. You must not think. . When searching for a
school to study at, it almost seems as hard to find a school then actually being in college. Researching
for a college takes a lot of effort and determination. The school should offer the classes required for
the dream career of the student. The school should also have an outstanding campus environment and
have an affordable cost. When considering to go to The University of Milwaukee, some factors to

The university is located in a large urban area in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Attending a college that is
located in a large area can have positive effects and negative effects to the learning environment. A
positive effect is all the options for different clinical jobs required to take while working towards a
physical therapy degree. Negative effects are the noises at night that could distract students from
focusing on learning. Milwaukee offers many opportunities to be a part of the campus environment by
encouraging students to be a part of activities. The University often offers live music and art shows,

The First Transition Era ( Thomas Edison s Motion Picture...
From the early invention of Thomas Edison s motion picture camera, to the blending of sound with
pictures and to now day s big budget movies; Films have been evolving throughout the 20th century.
The main reason for the alteration was due to the rapid advancement in technology. One of the key
factors that shapes how we perceive a movie, is its sound. Just by changing the tempo and the volume
of score, a filmmaker can make viewers have better interpretation of the movie. Through the course of
time, music has been important in movies, even in silent films. Then, in the late 1920 s, the arrival of
synchronized sound changed how movies were made forever. After the memorable transition era

Due to not having the technology to sync video with dialogue sound together, the music played a
significant role in expressing the sailors; in the other words the sound of the film carried the story of
the movie. The score of the film caught the audience attention by its loud and aggressive sound. (in
the title scene, we hear loud marching sound). and the angry emotions of the sailors was portrayed.)
There was a lot of use of percussion instruments which created stress and tension to the silent movie.
Battleship Potemkin had a massacre scene which was called Odessa steps, where innocent mothers
and children were getting killed by the Russian soldiers; that scene had bold percussion sound which
came from the bass drums. Throughout the movie, the sound followed the actions of the characters
effectively. In battleship Potemkin Emotions of the characters like anger and displeasure were
expressed by the orchestral music. For example, in these scene (in the morning scene, we see the
displeasure that the sailors were feeling.) There was a change of sound when a character alters their
emotion or feeling. Even though, the sound of Battleship Potemkin didn t have a dialogue, the movie
still managed to create an ominous feeling by using loud live music and effects. Silent film is a
milestone in the evolution of film music.

Analyzing The Consumers Generating Inter Harmonic Frequencies
Alexander B. Nassif and Jing Yong [7] have proposed a method to identify the consumers generating
inter harmonic frequencies. The inter harmonics can be measured by means of Impedance based
approach applied at the metering point. The main idea is that, the inter harmonic impedance of the
system is much smaller than that of an inter harmonic generating load. This method can identify the
source of each inter harmonic component without having to rely solely on the active power
measurement and requires only an approximate value for the inter harmonic impedance measured at
the metering point. As per references [2], [6], [7], [9] any device with nonlinear characteristics which
derive their input power from a sinusoidal electrical system may be responsible for injecting harmonic
currents voltages into the electrical system [2, 6, 7, 9 ]. Francisco C. De la rossa [2] have described ,all
possible nonlinear loads . Among them few are Power converters such as Variable frequency drives,
DC motor controllers, Cycloconverter, Cranes, Elevators ,Steel mills, Power supplies, UPS,Battery
chargers, Inverters ARC devices such as Fluorescent lighting, ARC furnaces, Welding machines.
According to authors [2] ,[7] Even linear loads like power transformers can act nonlinear under
saturation conditions. This occurs beyond the so called saturation knee of the magnetizing curve of the
transformer. [2],[7]. According to author Joseph S. Subjak [9], Communication interference

History and Moral Development of Mental Health Treatment...
History and Moral Development of Mental Health Treatment and Involuntary Commitment The
history of involuntary commitment has been developed and created through the history of mental
illness and the constructs of society. Government policy has been created to treat mental illness and
this philosophy of mental illness and its treatment goes as far back as Greek Mythology. The belief
about mental illness has changed throughout history and at times thought to be due to, possession of
demons, reversion to an animalistic level of consciousness, a sinful state of the soul, a chemical
imbalance, and as reported recently in the medical journal Nature and Genetics, a defect in

Hamilton, 1971). Hippocrates believed that mental illness had a physical and a rational explanation
and rejected the views of his time that considered illness to be caused by superstitions and by
possession of evil spirits. Additionally, he recommended that the treatment of mental illness should be
conducted in an asylum, a secure and safe retreat from the chaos and pressures of the environment,
rather than having persons with mental illness whipped in public, or incarcerated in dungeons
(Stevens, D. 1997). Soranus of Ephesus lived in the century 98 A.D. in Rome, and was a physician of
women and childbirth. Soranus believed that the human body is composed of atoms constantly in
motion. He theorized that disease was caused by a disturbance in these atoms. In light of the recent
discovery that schizophrenia might be caused by a defective chromosome number six, Soranus view
coincide with the latest findings on the possible causes of some mental illness (Darton, K. 2000).
Although, Soranus described mental illness as an organic disturbance, he treated it by psychological
methods, minimizing the use of drugs and other physical treatments. Treatments included encouraging
reading, entertainment, sea voyagers, etc. Soranus thought that the patient should be engaged in
intellectual activities not only for therapeutic purposes but to detect

Diversity Makes Good Business Case
According to the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, Diversity refers to variety in the field of
concern. However, Leopold, J. et al (2005) refers to managing diversity as a belief that all individual
differences should be valued and recognized. It is in this context that diversity has become center of
concern in most organizations. It is believed that employing a more diverse workforce could enhance
an organization s service or products to a wider range of clients or customers. It is also said that
diversity emphasizes for four main reasons, namely maximizing the resources available in the labour
market, maximizing the potential within the organization s workforce, creating business opportunities
through the employment of a diverse ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is said that, those firms that are more heterogeneous, are likely to attract best employees regardless
of age, gender or ethnicity. Above all, firms that celebrate diversity, their work force is highly
expected to be more committed to the employers because of the recognition and valuing of individual
differences. To this context, cost associated with turnover and absenteeism will be reduced, Leopold,
et al (2005). This implies that diversity can provide an organization with competitive advantage. For
example a giant chemical firm DuPont, used input from African American work force to develop and
successfully market agricultural products for small farmers in the South, Fred Luthans, (2011). It is
reported that a multicultural team at DuPont enabled the firm to gain about forty five million Dollars
in a new business worldwide. Coca cola is another truly world brand which is readily identified by
consumers in virtually every country. With, this in mind, it can be agreed at a larger extent that
diversity makes good business case. However, employing a diverse work force can present conflicts of
interest and increase the complicity of managerial problem solving and decision making. Some
organizations reject employing women because they lack tenacity. It has been observed that when
deadlines are tight at work place managers need people who are willing to spend more, time at the
office, Luthans, (2011). However, firms that celebrate gender diversity at work place, have

facial expression is blank and emotionless. The artist is also portrayed with a monkey behind her right
shoulder and a black cat behind her left shoulder as well as dragonfly like insects whose bodies are

Attached to the center of the thorn necklace is a dead hummingbird which hangs down toward her
breast. In the background, there is large plant leaves showing a sliver of the sky at the top of the
painting. Kahlo designs a strong, unified, and symmetrical composition using the elements of art and
principles of design. The painting is representational in subject matter, and the aesthetic style is clearly
surreal. The composition style is a traditional bust portrait, it is a closed composition confining the
main subject of the painting within the frame. The artist creates balance within the composition by
using the light values of the sky at the top and bright white garment in the bottom portion of the scene.
There is a contrast between the neutral tones of the foreground to the cool color scheme of the
background. The composition also reveals a symmetrical element. If the viewer was to draw an
imaginary line down the middle of the frame the two sides would be evenly balanced. The pattern
created by the lines in the large leaves create a rhythmic background that enhances the images in the
foreground. The element of space is used to create a frame within a frame in the painting.

What Moves the Oil and Gas Price?
Why are oil prices and gas prices so dramatically increased in the last view years? Oil and gas price
will maintain the current level or rise in the next years because of the world economy, an increased

How long will the oil reserves last?
It is currently estimated that the oil reserves in the United States will last for 20 to 30 years, but this

Ironically, there was a direct correlation between Faustus using his blood to sign over his soul to
Lucifer and the blood Christ as a symbol of salvation. Faustus to use his blood by the request of

Medieval Religion beliefs are centered on the notion all sins are forgiven with exception in Doctor
Faustus case; primarily, due to his corrupted spirit and self denial to fall under the graciousness of
God. His conscience was at the forefront of his decision to practice black magic guiding him toward
sin; even though he knew it was wrong. (McCloskey 111)
Doctor Faustus seemed as if selling his soul was a small price to pay to gain authority over others. In
contrast, he failed to realize that Lucifer bought his soul at four twenty years and condemned to hell
for eternity. McCloskey acknowledged that, Yet the prize for which he has sold his body and soul to

Down Syndrome As A Cognitive Disorder Essay
Down syndrome as a cognitive disorder
Down syndrome (DS) is relatively well known as a genetic disorder to the general public and children
with this syndrome form one of the most readily identifiable groups of children with moderate to
severe learning difficulties. It has been over 130 years since Langdon Down first described DS and 30
years since the presence of the defining extra copy of chromosome 21 was identified by Lejeune and
his team of
French geneticists. Delay in the development of cognitive capacities is a primary consequence of
Down syndrome. Despite such cognitive delay, however, young children with Down syndrome can be
empathic, affectionate and engaging (Wishart Pitcairn, 2000).
What is Down Syndrome Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that is typically caused when a
baby is conceived with 47 chromosomes instead of the normal 46. Starting in the womb, this
additional genetic material alters the course of the child s development. The most common form of
Down syndrome, Trisomy 21, occurs when a child is born with a full three copies of the 21st
chromosome, rather than the normal two. In rare cases, Down syndrome is caused by other
chromosomal arrangements.
Children with Down syndrome typically have intellectual disabilities, hypotonia (low muscle tone)
and characteristic facial features, such as upward slanted eyes and a flattened nasal bridge. Except

times because there is no real development of their relationship. Arthur just seems to have fallen
deeply in love with a woman who s stupidity is infuriating. However, Arthur is not the only one who is
madly in love with Gwenyfar; Arthur s best friend Lancelet is as well. Igraine see s this in the
beginning and tries to undo the arrangement of her marriage to Arthur, but it could not be stopped.
Gwenyfar returns the love to Lancelet and the reader somehow manages to feel compassion for the
poor woman locked in a triangle of despair. The reader grows to hate Gwenyfar as she is the ultimate
rock in the bottom of Morgaine s shoe. The Mists of Avalon depicts Gwenhwyfar as a blind cultist,
rather than the wise and loving queen.

father of 4 children. Burgoyne received his education at Westminster and then went into the military.
He was remembered for his defeat by superior American forces in the Saratoga campaign of 1777. He

He was assigned to Canada in 1776 as a major general. THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY

Hudson River, was fought to a standstill by a much larger army commanded successively by General
Philip Schuylar and General Horatio Gates, who were brilliantly assisted by Brigadier General
Benedict Arnold. General Howe chose to fight Pennsylvania but left the men with no food and no
medical help. St. Leger was defeated at Oriskany, New York and headed west. Burgoyne surrendered

Da Vinci Code, A Character Analysis of Sophie Neveu Essay
When Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is called to The Louvre on account of Jacques Sauniere s
death, he is greeted by a carefully placed arrangement of clues the curator all so strategically left

seems like randomly strewn numbers, but Langdon knows that Sauniere is a smart man, and that they
must mean something. Before he can possibly make any sense of it, Agent Sophie Neveu from the
DCPJ s Cryptology Department arrives to break the code. While at the museum she reveals privately

She was told at a young age that the reason she grew up with her grandfather was because her parents

The Story Of Pontius Pilate By Paul Maier
There are two sides to every story, and sometimes we forget to look at the other side. Before I picked
up Pontius Pilate by Paul L. Maier, I can honestly say I didn t care so much for Pilate. All I remember
based on what I was taught was that Pilate didn t want Christ s blood on his hands, so he took the easy
way out. As sad as it was, that was my only extensive knowledge about who Pilot was, and how he
untimely got to that decision to wash his hands clean of the situation. Paul Maier did a fantastic job
with helping me understand what living life back in the New Testament would look like. Though the
thought of marrying a 15 year old daughter to a 30 year old man in today s society seems crazy,
Procula was actually considered to be almost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

thought that Pilot was just a Roman Ruler out to get Jesus scared of his power. Now I understand that
Pilot did what was right for Pilot. Pilot didn t really seem to have a choice but to Crucify Jesus, even if
he didn t want to. Pilot made an agreement that he would release one prisoner chosen by the people at
Passover and the people traded in Jesus for Barabbas. Everything that I read about Pilot in this book
proved him to be a man of his word, and someone who favored the law and his people there was no
way that he could go back on it. Do I think Pilot ever regretted what he did? Yes. Do I think he would
go back and change what he had done? I m not sure. If Pilot set Jesus free, where would Christianity
be today? History it self would have been changed forever. While it seemed to be a minimal task for
Pilot to do to keep his constituents happy, it actually is one of the biggest decisions a human on earth
has ever made. It might sound sacrilegious to say this, but I m Glad that Pilot sentenced Jesus to die
because in that the whole human race gained eternal

Gender Roles in Sitcoms
Gender roles in Sitcoms
Gender is the crucial factor in characterization in the majority of sitcoms. Up until the impact of
feminism in the 1970s, in the UK at least, it is clear that most of the successful sitcoms featured
leading male characters (Hancock, Steptoe, Dad s Army, Till Death Do Us Part, Porridge etc.). Women
were more likely to feature in ensemble casts The Rag Trade, Are You Being Served? This was also a
function of the employment opportunities for women. Since the 1970s, women in leading roles have
been more common (but the most successful comedies have tended to be based on couples rather than
single women). (Roy Stafford, TV Sitcoms and Gender, ONLINE)

Other characters include sardonic butler Niles (Daniel Davis), and Maxwell s socialite business

The Nanny is no longer the type of sitcom where the wife stays at home and just her husband goes to
work. Compared with Bewitched , this sitcom is more modern and more different in what concerns the
gender roles. Fran Fine is no longer just a home loving wife who does everything to support her
husband, but she exposes her point of view and most often she dose so as everyone to do as she wants

Identification; providing criminal penalties and Senate Bill 5, which requires a voter to present proof

questioned at the time. Senate bill 5 was the revised version of SB 14, which was put into place so that

The law that says the types of photo ID election officials can/cannot accept at polls goes against the
Voting Rights Act. More than 600,000 Texans lack the form(s) of photo ID that are required through
SB 14. However, these citizens are able to obtain election ID certificates for free, but only if they can
produce a copy of their birth certificate. Some opponents of Texas law say that there is nothing in SB
14 that is discriminatory, but the judges of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals still chose to reject it. Both
bills were motivated by racism; neither was necessary to preserve voter integrity. Shelby County v.
Holder is relevant to SB 14 in that it weakened federal over state and county elections. Congress

supreme court in this decision. The federal district court denied preclearance of SB 14. Texas is not
permitted to implement the photo ID law, says Andrade from Texas Secretary of State. This started the
suppression of minority voting rights, however a federal court is able to make a state submit its voting
laws to the District of Judges for approval for up to 10 years if the state was intentionally engaging in
race based voter suppression. If Texas is put under preclearance, the state will have to prove/show the
federal government that its election laws are not discriminatory against minorities for the next 10

Bono: Some people build fences to keep people out... and other people build fences to keep people in.
Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you. (1 2.i.)
Here August Wilson in the first part shows a little of the gender roles of the 1950s where men are the
boss of the house and women are subservient to them. It also shows that Rose did not go in as told but
remained there with them and Troy accepted that he could not tell her what to do. The image or action
of Rose not leaving shows the changing of the times in other words the 1950s on the fence to between
the old ways and the new ones. In the first part of what Bono says describes Troy with death and the
other part describes Rose with her love for her family and desire to keep everyone close and happy.
The character Gabriel (Uncle Gabe) is a mix of many different things and people that of the time and
believes he signals the opening of heaven s gate as his interpretation of the fence. Gabriel is Troy s
half brother who went and fought in the war. He was medically discharged after receiving a head
injury that permanently reduced his mental functions. Troy helped Gabriel get a settlement and helps
spend/manage the money. Troy used the money to buy himself a house that Gabriel originally lived in
as well until Gabriel moved out at his own wish. Wilson wrote: Gabriel: Oh, yeah... I know it. The

A Contribution To The Critique Of Political Economy By...
Karl Marx was an influential German philosopher who is widely known for his work on capitalism.
Class was a notable social category for Marx; he discussed ruling class ideas and explained how a
person s class was defined by their relation to the means of production. Specifically, in the Preface to
A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy, Marx (1859) writes, In the social production of
their existence, men inevitably enter into definite relations, which are independent of their will,
namely relations of production appropriate to a given stage in the development of their material forces
of production (pg. 20). In this essay, I will be discussing what Marx means when he refers to the
relations of production as independent of [men s] will, in that people enter into enforced, coercive
relationships with owners of capital because of the economic system which structures society. The
class relations are built upon a base and a superstructure which in turn shape the structure of society
and its means of production. Consequently, the forms of social consciousness of society are
predetermined and dictated by the ruling classes as people must enter into these relationships in order
to survive, thus creating a dialectical economic superstructure.
Society abides by the social relations put in place between proletariats and the bourgeoisie due to the
coercive nature of these relationships, autonomous of free choice. Though dominating the actions and
choices of society, such coercive relationships with owners of capital are tolerated due to people s
need for survival. People s need for survival results in the need to make money for their material
existence, which includes food and shelter. Awareness of one s current economic system also
contributes to the understanding of the established social order. However, due to their subordinated
status, low income and low skilled jobs may be their only opportunity for survival. For instance,
undergraduate university students are only armed with high school diplomas and few skills, but
require earning a living to complete school to try and succeed within a capitalist society. As a result of
the few skills and little schooling students possess, taking low skilled jobs

Blindness James Saramago Analysis
The Opportunity for Change That Hunger Provides
Hunger is a part of the human experience that appears in literature across the globe. People require
daily nourishment, and bond over sharing meals together. The most basic of human needs are those
that are required for physical safety. Without nourishment, a body will die. Entire communities have
been devastated by famines in history. Authors of the 20th century from various countries understood
the significance of finding food to sustain the body. When there is scarcity of food, it dominates a
person s interests over other needs like social and emotional needs. This provides a window of
opportunity in literature. When a character experiences hunger, it strips them down to their most basic
form, as a body needing to survive. Hunger in literature causes people to break social customs and
behave in ways they otherwise would not. As civilized behaviors and customs are replaced with the
desire to survive, characters respond with both great selfishness and selflessness depending on their
inner condition.
A novel that provides many examples of this is Blindness, the 1995 novel by Portuguese author José
Saramago. The story is set in a city that experiences a bizarre epidemic of blindness the degrading of
civilization that follows quickly after. Those who have been struck with blindness early on were
rounded up into a quarantine and small food portions were provided on schedule. Dishonesty arises as

John Edgar Wideman s The Baby Thrown Into Trash And...
Whether you think you can or think you can t, you are right Henry Ford. Perspective can change an
entire reality for an individual. This is also prevalent in John Edgar Wideman s Newborn Thrown In
Trash and Dies as he uses a unique first person perspective to reveal his story. Many thoughts and
ideas come to mind when this title is recited, however, this is precisely what transpires in John Edgar
Wideman s short story. In A Newborn Thrown In Trash and Dies a new born baby discusses the
different phases of a life that could have been. Widman presents his story in the first person point of
view. Wideman expresses events as he is the narrator a female infant, who is plummeting to her death
through a garbage chute. Wideman s use of the first person point of view enables him to describe the
events in the story through his eyes, gaining the trust of the reader, to depict the social issue of child
abuse and abandonment. The first person perspective, as presented in the story, is a vital tool used by

Faceton Museum
Over the spring break, my parents decided to take me to visit colleges. Of the two colleges we visited,
one of them is located near Washington D.C. We were supposed to visit Georgetown University, but
we had one day to relax, so my family decided to visit the National Gallery of Art. My dad originally
suggested the Smithsonian Museum, but my said that on Yelp, the National Gallery of Art was ranked
1st in museums in Washington, which is much better than Smithsonian, which was ranked 12th. So,
we left our hotel and arrived at the museum just as soon as it opened. The National Gallery of Art,
funded by the government, had free admissions. In addition to free admission, there were free audio
tours that you could sign up for. Basically, you would give the man at the desk a valuable item (e.g.,
your driver license, I.D., credit card) and, in exchange, he gave you this device that sort of looked like
an old flip phone. In order for the device to work, you would go to specific paintings and punch in the
numbers that should be shown next to the title of the piece. You would then bring the device up to
your ears as it plays an audio clip mostly explaining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The color scheme of the piece could be called monochromatic. A large majority of the piece is simply
the different shades of brown and orange that are used for the lions and the rocks. However, Sir Peter
Rubens decides to add a bright red colored cloth behind Daniel in order to add variety and interest to
the viewer. With the use of all the elements of design, Sir Peter achieved various other principles of
design. Balance, for instance, is established through the placement of the forms in the piece. Although
more lions are on the left side of the piece, the lions on the right are much more bigger than the left,
with more details and also more action to their forms as well. The main figure, Daniel, is also not
entirely centered, which helps balance the painting

Shiro Azuma s Visit To The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall
To the Past I used to admire my father, who came to United States with my mother and me with
almost no understanding of English, but is still hopeful about the new life. He is always the first one
who stands up for me and courage me to face to the challenges, and I always think that he is the only
one who can listen to my view and give me advice sincerely, until I visited the Nanjing Massacre
Memorial Hall with him, I found that we consider our history in two completely different ways. The
Memorial Hall is far away from the hotel we stayed, it took us approximately forty minutes to get
there. However, this is worth it. I like history, and the visiting of Memorial Hall is one of the most
important reason of why I want to spend the great summer holiday in this unfamiliar city. Surprisingly,

Diary of Shiro Azuma. He came to Nanjing during his lifetime to apologize for the atrocity he had do

diary, and he was die before he successfully prove that all the stories in his diary are true.
After my father and me finished the visiting of the hall, instead of went to the ruins, my father found a

Crayfish Resting Membrane Potential Essay
The purpose of this experiment was to test the hypothesis that the crayfish resting membrane potential
is primarily dependent on the potassium ion concentration gradient. Our approach to testing this
hypothesis involves taking intracellular recordings using an IWX/214 interface, iWorx and LabScribe
software, and a Model 3100 electrometer complete with a head stage, ground electrode, glass
microelectrodes, and micromanipulator. The study organism used for this experiment involved the
abdominal extensor muscles of adult Orconectes rusticus. One sample t tests were conducted on the
resulting membrane potentials and their corresponding predicted values, taken from the Nernst
Equation. The results of the statistical analysis rejected the null hypothesis only for some potassium
gradient concentrations, and while there might be enough evidence to suggest that there is a
relationship between the potassium gradient concentration and crayfish resting membrane potential,
we cannot conclude from this experiment a primarily dependent relationship.

While both models in question agree that there is a relationship between the potassium concentration
gradient and resting membrane potential, we are not addressing other permeable ions that might also
have an influence. While this particular topic is still under debate, Tomasz Sokalski et. al. suggested in
their study, Numerical Solution of the Coupled Nernst Planck and Poisson Equations for Liquid
Junction and Ion Selective Membrane Potentials , that while the Nernst Planck model is proposed to
be a more appropriate platform for dealing with the theory of ion selective membrane electrodes for
analytical applications, it can be shown that interpreting the electrical potential of plasma membranes
exclusively in terms of boundary potential at steady state is incorrect (Sokalski et. al.

and what is the difference between them? The novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger is a
coming of age story. It follows the short tale of Holden Caulfield, a sixteen year old boy, who
throughout his experiences in the novel, changes and becomes more mature and independent. The

The Business s Planning And Control Policy
BUDGETING
In the most recent years budgets are considered to be one of the key factors about the business s
planning and control policy (Thomas, 1983, p. 133). Financial budgets show the business s strategy
concerning the following year compiled by financial statements, plus they are supposed to be the
policy used in order to evaluate the managerial performance and be the principle of the management
system (ibid). Budgets are considered to be attached to the concept of control.
It is really essential that firms create a written project that formulates which will be the objectives of
the company, what kind of strategies should be followed and what outcomes are more likely, also
known as performance targets (Merchant Van der Stede, 2012, p.306). According to Drury (2004, p.
593) budgeting is affected by the fulfillment of the deep rooted plan for the following year and, due to
the shorter preparation boundary, budgets are supposed to be accurate and particularized. Budgets are
a straightforward evidence of what should be anticipated to be accomplished throughout the duration
of the budget period.
According to Hansen and Mowen (2003, p.992) Budgetary slack is the process of padding the budget
by overestimating costs and underestimating revenues . Managers and workers in a firm need to be
encouraged to participate in the budget. There are two main ways in which the participation in the
budget takes place: the first one is the top down approach, in which the managers give

Descriptive Essay On Fashion Shows
My cousin, Eshna was taking me to a fashion show being held in Kolkata. I ve never been to one
before. In fact, I had no idea of what exactly it was that they showed in fashion shows. In dog shows,
they showed dogs; in baby shows they showed babies. I knew what dogs were, and what babies were,
so that was all right. But I hadn t a clue what fashion was, and was looking forward to finding out.
All I knew about fashion shows was that they involved people called models. The models walked up
and down something called a catwalk. No one seemed to know why a catwalk should be called a
catwalk. Why not a dogwalk, for instance? Well, the answer to that seemed simple. If they called the
catwalk a dogwalk then people might think that what they d come to see was a dog show, instead of a
fashion show and be on the lookout for a French poodle a la Rohit Bal. On the other hand, no one s
ever heard of a cat show, so if you call the catwalk in a fashion show a catwalk you d be alright, and
no one would expect to see Garfield strutting his stuff courtesy Ritu Beri. Just to further confuse
matters, however, the catwalk is also known as a ramp. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay On Anti Semitism In America
Earlier students of American Jewish life minimized the presence of anti Semitism in the United States,
which they viewed as a late and alien phenomenon on the American scene arising in the late 19th
century. More recently, scholars have asserted that no period in American Jewish history was free of
anti Semitism. The debate continues about the significance of anti Semitism in different periods of
American history. Anti Semitism has always been less prevalent in the United States than in Europe.
The first governmental incident of anti Jewish sentiment was recorded during the American Civil War.
The United States was restrictive towards Jewish immigration during the 1920s by enacting with the
Johnson Reed Act blocking Jewish students from attending Harvard University.
One way the United States was restrictive towards Jewish immigration was the Johnson Reed Act. The
Immigration Act of 1924 limited the number of immigrants allowed entry into the United States
through a national origins quota. The Quota provided immigrations visas to two percent of the total
number of people of each nationally in the United States as the 1890 national census. It completely
excluded immigrants from Asia. In 1917, the U.S. Congress enacted the first widely restrictive
immigration law. The uncertainty generated over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

special case of Numerus clauses. Jewish educational quotas could be statewide law or adopted only in

students, or of limiting the number of Jewish students so that their share in the student s population
would not be larger than their share in general population. In some establishments, the Jewish quota
placed a limit on growth rather than set a fixed level of participation to be

The Effect Of Temperature On Catechol Oxidase
Abstract: The Effects of Temperature on Catechol Oxidase. Lania Ellis, 2014, 102 Student Center Dr.
San Marcos, TX 78666.
Temperature can affect the reaction of catechol oxidase by speeding up or slowing down the reaction.
I was able to see what happened to the absorbance after changing the temperature of the catechol
oxidase solution. I did this by heating and cooling the solutions to measure the absorbances in hot,
cold, warm, and room temperature. Then the data was compared to see how the temperature effected
the solution. The catechol oxidase solutions reacted best in room temperature (twenty three degrees
Celsius) and the worst in the cold (zero degrees Celsius). I concluded that temperature really does
affect the way catechol oxidase reacts. Introduction: Starting out with some background information, I
know that enzymes are biological catalysts. The enzyme that I used for this experiment was potato
juice. Enzymes make reaction rates go faster. They lower activation energy, making chemical
reactions. Temperature has an effect on canola cultivars. The higher temperature decreased stem
diameter, but room temperature had thicker stems. So I believe the same will happen for the catechol
oxidase; the solution will react faster at room temperature. Other enzymes can also have different
effects such as the enzyme in cattle serum. The enzyme lost activity in room temperature. With that
being said room temperature can also be detrimental with specific enzymes. Fungus also

Most people assume that workplace diversity is about increasing racial, national, gender, or class
representation in other words, recruiting and retaining more people from traditionally
underrepresented identity groups. Taking this commonly held assumption as a starting point, we set
out six years ago to investigate its link to organizational effectiveness. We soon found that thinking of
diversity simply in terms of identity group representation inhibited effectiveness. Organizations
usually take one of two paths in managing diversity. In the name of equality and fairness, they
encourage (and expect) women and people of color to blend in. Or they set them apart in jobs that
relate specifically to their backgrounds, assigning them, for example, to areas that require them to
interface with clients or customers of the same identity group. African American M.B.A. s often find
themselves marketing products to innercity communities; Hispanics frequently market to Hispanics or
work for Latin American subsidiaries. In those kinds of cases, companies are operating on the
assumption that the main virtue identity groups have to offer is a knowledge of their own people. This
assumption is limited and limiting and detrimental to diversity efforts. What we suggest here is that
diversity goes beyond increasing the number of different identity group affiliations on the payroll to
recognizing that such an effort is merely the first step in managing a diverse workforce for the

  • 2. A Defense Of Peter Singer s Famine Relief Argument Yaoxian Qu Chad Vance Introduction to Philosophy 12/04/2014 A Defense of Peter Singer s Famine Relief Argument In his paper Famine affluence and morality , Peter Singer sought to provide response to a significant moral question: Is it morally permissible to not donate to famine? Singer argued that we are morally obligated to famine relief. I am deeply convinced by his argument. In this paper, I shall examine two significant objections to singer s argument and explain why they would ultimately fail. Singer s original argument takes the following form: (P1) Suffering and death from lack of food, shelter and medical care are bad (P2) If we can prevent something bad from happening without sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, then we are morally obligated to do so. (P3) Death caused by famine is something bad that happens that we can prevent without sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance (namely, by donating to famine relief). (C) Therefore, we ought to donate to famine relief. Singer assumed premise 1 to be undoubtedly true, which is manifested by his statement: It is difficult, perhaps impossible, to refute such positions, and so for brevity I will henceforth take this assumption as accepted. (Singer, 2) Those who disagree need read no further. To support the second premise of his argument, he provided the following situation: Shallow Pond: Imagine that you are going to work. On your way to work, you see a child drowning in a pond. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of Restorative Justice Last year in Chicago, there were nearly 800 homicides that took place throughout the city and that is just Chicago alone! Imagine what the numbers would be like if you added up all the homicides that took place in each state throughout the United States. It would be outrageous and that would only be for our 50 states, it does not include other countries around our world. Crime rates are skyrocketing and something needs to be done. For some of these offenders, receiving a harsh punishment and being put in jail makes them realize what they have done and makes them want to better themselves once they get out. On the other hand, other offenders serve their time, get released, and go right back to their old ways, the ways that put them in jail in the first place. Punishment does not seem to work for everyone; therefore a new approach must be put into action, this approach being restorative justice. Restorative justice is a groundbreaking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Restorative justice can take place in places such as police stations, courtrooms, and prisons. Many of the restorative justice programs take place in prisons because it relates to the victim offender relationship. I believe a good place for restorative justice within the criminal justice system is in prisons because the prisoners have nothing else to do so it is a good time for them to focus on that practice and keep busy because there is much time to be dedicated to mending their offender (RJ in the Criminal Justice System). But an even better process for restorative practice would be outside of the criminal justice system in places such as schools, workplaces, faith communities, families, and communities. Being somewhere outside of the criminal justice system gives the victim and offender more privacy and makes them feel more comfortable which can help a lot when expressing and coping with their ... Fetus Should Not Have Rights The fetus cannot possibly have rights because the fetus cannot be determine as a complete human and no statics can back up 100% when human life begins without a doubt. We all assume we know but we don t. It s our own opinion; therefore, we cannot determine the laws and rights on our opinion but we can determine it on the fact that the mother is a human begin and has lived up the life. Besides the fetus depends on the mother at all time during the pregnancy and after birth. The mother is the one who is going to have to feed the child, clothes the child and change the child s diapers. The child could not possibly do all of those things by itself; therefore, the child depends 100% at all times on the mother. That is why the mother deserves those rights and need safety procedures if she decides to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, it is only right for the mother to have the right to determine what it is she wants without all the negative perspective. No one is pointing fingers and saying it is anyone s fault, life happens that s it. Of course the innocent unborn child should not have to pay for the crime of another but why should the woman be remind every single day of what happened due to having the child. Not to mention why would anyone want to be a child of a rapist or incest, also genetic runs deep who knows what if the innocent child was to grow up and become its father the rapist or incest and repeat history, are pro life supporters willing to take that risk and let that happen to someone else because that one would be on them. Yes it is the state s reasonability to protect the rights of its citizens but the fetus is unborn therefore it cannot possibly be a citizen. Abortion is legal because the government wants to protect the rights of the woman and let them have a safe procedure instead of putting them at risk. Sure abortion is murder but that isn t for pro life to determine what should happen to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Differences Of The UEFA Champions League And The Super Bowl Both the UEFA Champions League and Super Bowl in the United States are big sporting events both nationally and internationally. There are several similarities between the opening ceremony of the UEFA Champions League and that of the Super Bowl. One of the main similarities is that the two events attract a huge number of fans. In the 2017 UEFA Champions League final, there were fans drawn from both Real Madrid and Juventus. The final attracted many people as many people flocked to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Similarly, many fans flock the Super Bowl event in the United States. Another similarity is the fact that the two events feature artist s performances. The Black Eyed Peas performed during the opening ceremony of the 2017 UEFA Champions League. Similarly, the Super Bowl has in the past featured artists such as Lady Gaga. There are however some differences between the two events. The UEFA Champions League attracted more fans compared to the Super Bowl. UEFA Champions League commands a wider fan base globally compared to the Super Bowl. Another difference is the fact that while the Super Bowl has halftime performances, the UEFA Champions League only features opening performances. Headscarf Controversy French media coverage of the headscarf controversy perpetuates considerable misunderstanding of Islam and thus the politics of secularism extend to media framing of the tension between religious minorities and the non religious in a society where secular is hegemonic. In 1989, in a small town outside of Paris, three girls were expelled for wearing Hijabs. The girls were in no way disruptive, or incapable academically, however, the event became significant to the reframing of the headscarf as a ;veil; or misrepresentation as a chador through and by the media. Furthermore, public intellectuals in the media promoted concerns regarding Iran type mobilisation in France. A similar incident occurred in 1994, 69 girls were expelled for wearing what ... From the early invention of Thomas Edison s motion picture camera, to the blending of sound with pictures and to now day s big budget movies; Films have been evolving throughout the 20th century. The main reason for the alteration was due to the rapid advancement in technology. One of the key factors that shapes how we perceive a movie, is its sound. Just by changing the tempo and the volume of score, a filmmaker can make viewers have better interpretation of the movie. Through the course of time, music has been important in movies, even in silent films. Then, in the late 1920 s, the arrival of synchronized sound changed how movies were made forever. There was a lot of use of percussion instruments which created stress and tension to the silent movie. • 9. Analyzing The Consumers Generating Inter Harmonic Frequencies Alexander B. Nassif and Jing Yong [7] have proposed a method to identify the consumers generating inter harmonic frequencies. The inter harmonics can be measured by means of Impedance based approach applied at the metering point. The main idea is that, the inter harmonic impedance of the system is much smaller than that of an inter harmonic generating load. This method can identify the source of each inter harmonic component without having to rely solely on the active power measurement and requires only an approximate value for the inter harmonic impedance measured at the metering point. As per references [2], [6], [7], [9] any device with nonlinear characteristics which derive their input power from a sinusoidal electrical system may be responsible for injecting harmonic currents voltages into the electrical system [2, 6, 7, 9 ]. Francisco C. De la rossa [2] have described ,all possible nonlinear loads . Among them few are Power converters such as Variable frequency drives, DC motor controllers, Cycloconverter, Cranes, Elevators ,Steel mills, Power supplies, UPS,Battery chargers, Inverters ARC devices such as Fluorescent lighting, ARC furnaces, Welding machines. According to authors [2] ,[7] Even linear loads like power transformers can act nonlinear under saturation conditions. This occurs beyond the so called saturation knee of the magnetizing curve of the transformer. [2],[7]. According to author Joseph S. Subjak [9], Communication interference ... History and Moral Development of Mental Health Treatment and Involuntary Commitment The history of involuntary commitment has been developed and created through the history of mental illness and the constructs of society. Government policy has been created to treat mental illness and this philosophy of mental illness and its treatment goes as far back as Greek Mythology. The belief about mental illness has changed throughout history and at times thought to be due to, possession of demons, reversion to an animalistic level of consciousness, a sinful state of the soul, a chemical imbalance, and as reported recently in the medical journal Nature and Genetics, a defect in chromosome number six (at least as far as schizophrenia is ... Hippocrates believed that mental illness had a physical and a rational explanation and rejected the views of his time that considered illness to be caused by superstitions and by possession of evil spirits. Additionally, he recommended that the treatment of mental illness should be conducted in an asylum, a secure and safe retreat from the chaos and pressures of the environment, rather than having persons with mental illness whipped in public, or incarcerated in dungeons (Stevens, D. 1997). Soranus of Ephesus lived in the century 98 A.D. in Rome, and was a physician of women and childbirth. Soranus believed that the human body is composed of atoms constantly in motion. He theorized that disease was caused by a disturbance in these atoms. In light of the recent discovery that schizophrenia might be caused by a defective chromosome number six, Soranus view coincide with the latest findings on the possible causes of some mental illness (Darton, K. 2000). Although, Soranus described mental illness as an organic disturbance, he treated it by psychological methods, minimizing the use of drugs and other physical treatments. Treatments included encouraging reading, entertainment, sea voyagers, etc. Soranus thought that the patient should be engaged in intellectual activities not only for therapeutic purposes but to detect ... However, Leopold, J. et al (2005) refers to managing diversity as a belief that all individual differences should be valued and recognized. It is in this context that diversity has become center of concern in most organizations. It is believed that employing a more diverse workforce could enhance an organization s service or products to a wider range of clients or customers. It is also said that diversity emphasizes for four main reasons, namely maximizing the resources available in the labour market, maximizing the potential within the organization s workforce, creating business opportunities through the employment of a diverse ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is said that, those firms that are more heterogeneous, are likely to attract best employees regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. Above all, firms that celebrate diversity, their work force is highly expected to be more committed to the employers because of the recognition and valuing of individual differences. To this context, cost associated with turnover and absenteeism will be reduced, Leopold, et al (2005). This implies that diversity can provide an organization with competitive advantage. For example a giant chemical firm DuPont, used input from African American work force to develop and successfully market agricultural products for small farmers in the South, Fred Luthans, (2011). It is reported that a multicultural team at DuPont enabled the firm to gain about forty five million Dollars in a new business worldwide. Coca cola is another truly world brand which is readily identified by consumers in virtually every country. The painting is representational in subject matter, and the aesthetic style is clearly surreal. The composition style is a traditional bust portrait, it is a closed composition confining the main subject of the painting within the frame. The artist creates balance within the composition by using the light values of the sky at the top and bright white garment in the bottom portion of the scene. There is a contrast between the neutral tones of the foreground to the cool color scheme of the background. The composition also reveals a symmetrical element. If the viewer was to draw an imaginary line down the middle of the frame the two sides would be evenly balanced. The pattern created by the lines in the large leaves create a rhythmic background that enhances the images in the foreground. The element of space is used to create a frame within a frame in the painting. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Down Syndrome As A Cognitive Disorder Essay Down syndrome as a cognitive disorder Down syndrome (DS) is relatively well known as a genetic disorder to the general public and children with this syndrome form one of the most readily identifiable groups of children with moderate to severe learning difficulties. It has been over 130 years since Langdon Down first described DS and 30 years since the presence of the defining extra copy of chromosome 21 was identified by Lejeune and his team of French geneticists. Delay in the development of cognitive capacities is a primary consequence of Down syndrome. Despite such cognitive delay, however, young children with Down syndrome can be empathic, affectionate and engaging (Wishart Pitcairn, 2000). What is Down Syndrome Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that is typically caused when a baby is conceived with 47 chromosomes instead of the normal 46. Starting in the womb, this additional genetic material alters the course of the child s development. The most common form of Down syndrome, Trisomy 21, occurs when a child is born with a full three copies of the 21st chromosome, rather than the normal two. In rare cases, Down syndrome is caused by other chromosomal arrangements. Senate Bill 14, which requires proof of Identification; providing criminal penalties and Senate Bill 5, which requires a voter to present proof of ID; providing a criminal penalty and increasing a criminal penalty are the two bills being questioned at the time. Senate bill 5 was the revised version of SB 14, which was put into place so that voters with no photo ID could sign a declaration and still cast their vote. More than 600,000 Texans lack the form(s) of photo ID that are required through SB 14. Some opponents of Texas law say that there is nothing in SB 14 that is discriminatory, but the judges of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals still chose to reject it. Both bills were motivated by racism; neither was necessary to preserve voter integrity. Shelby County v. Holder is relevant to SB 14 in that it weakened federal over state and county elections. • 35. A Contribution To The Critique Of Political Economy By... Karl Marx was an influential German philosopher who is widely known for his work on capitalism. Class was a notable social category for Marx; he discussed ruling class ideas and explained how a person s class was defined by their relation to the means of production. Specifically, in the Preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy, Marx (1859) writes, In the social production of their existence, men inevitably enter into definite relations, which are independent of their will, namely relations of production appropriate to a given stage in the development of their material forces of production (pg. 20). In this essay, I will be discussing what Marx means when he refers to the relations of production as independent of [men s] will, in that people enter into enforced, coercive relationships with owners of capital because of the economic system which structures society. The class relations are built upon a base and a superstructure which in turn shape the structure of society and its means of production. Consequently, the forms of social consciousness of society are predetermined and dictated by the ruling classes as people must enter into these relationships in order to survive, thus creating a dialectical economic superstructure. Society abides by the social relations put in place between proletariats and the bourgeoisie due to the coercive nature of these relationships, autonomous of free choice. Though dominating the actions and choices of society, such coercive relationships with owners of capital are tolerated due to people s need for survival. People s need for survival results in the need to make money for their material existence, which includes food and shelter. Awareness of one s current economic system also contributes to the understanding of the established social order. However, due to their subordinated status, low income and low skilled jobs may be their only opportunity for survival. For instance, undergraduate university students are only armed with high school diplomas and few skills, but require earning a living to complete school to try and succeed within a capitalist society. As a result of the few skills and little schooling students possess, taking low skilled jobs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Blindness James Saramago Analysis The Opportunity for Change That Hunger Provides Hunger is a part of the human experience that appears in literature across the globe. People require daily nourishment, and bond over sharing meals together. The most basic of human needs are those that are required for physical safety. Without nourishment, a body will die. Entire communities have been devastated by famines in history. Authors of the 20th century from various countries understood the significance of finding food to sustain the body. When there is scarcity of food, it dominates a person s interests over other needs like social and emotional needs. This provides a window of opportunity in literature. When a character experiences hunger, it strips them down to their most basic form, as a body needing to survive. Hunger in literature causes people to break social customs and behave in ways they otherwise would not. As civilized behaviors and customs are replaced with the desire to survive, characters respond with both great selfishness and selflessness depending on their inner condition. A novel that provides many examples of this is Blindness, the 1995 novel by Portuguese author José Saramago. The story is set in a city that experiences a bizarre epidemic of blindness the degrading of civilization that follows quickly after. This is also prevalent in John Edgar Wideman s Newborn Thrown In Trash and Dies as he uses a unique first person perspective to reveal his story. Many thoughts and ideas come to mind when this title is recited, however, this is precisely what transpires in John Edgar Wideman s short story. In A Newborn Thrown In Trash and Dies a new born baby discusses the different phases of a life that could have been. Widman presents his story in the first person point of view. Wideman expresses events as he is the narrator a female infant, who is plummeting to her death through a garbage chute. Wideman s use of the first person point of view enables him to describe the events in the story through his eyes, gaining the trust of the reader, to depict the social issue of child abuse and abandonment. The first person perspective, as presented in the story, is a vital tool used by John Edgar Wideman to plant a seed in our minds. Wideman s use of first person perspective, not only allows him to explain his story as the narrator, but also enables him to provoke an argument that is viewed through his perspective. The study organism used for this experiment involved the abdominal extensor muscles of adult Orconectes rusticus. The Business s Planning And Control Policy BUDGETING In the most recent years budgets are considered to be one of the key factors about the business s planning and control policy (Thomas, 1983, p. 133). Financial budgets show the business s strategy concerning the following year compiled by financial statements, plus they are supposed to be the policy used in order to evaluate the managerial performance and be the principle of the management system (ibid). Budgets are considered to be attached to the concept of control. It is really essential that firms create a written project that formulates which will be the objectives of the company, what kind of strategies should be followed and what outcomes are more likely, also known as performance targets (Merchant Van der Stede, 2012, p.306). According to Drury (2004, p. 593) budgeting is affected by the fulfillment of the deep rooted plan for the following year and, due to the shorter preparation boundary, budgets are supposed to be accurate and particularized. Temperature can affect the reaction of catechol oxidase by speeding up or slowing down the reaction. I was able to see what happened to the absorbance after changing the temperature of the catechol oxidase solution. I did this by heating and cooling the solutions to measure the absorbances in hot, cold, warm, and room temperature. Then the data was compared to see how the temperature effected the solution. The catechol oxidase solutions reacted best in room temperature (twenty three degrees Celsius) and the worst in the cold (zero degrees Celsius). I concluded that temperature really does affect the way catechol oxidase reacts. Introduction: Starting out with some background information, I know that enzymes are biological catalysts. The enzyme that I used for this experiment was potato juice. Enzymes make reaction rates go faster. They lower activation energy, making chemical reactions. Temperature has an effect on canola cultivars. The higher temperature decreased stem diameter, but room temperature had thicker stems. So I believe the same will happen for the catechol oxidase; the solution will react faster at room temperature. Other enzymes can also have different effects such as the enzyme in cattle serum. The enzyme lost activity in room temperature. With that being said room temperature can also be detrimental with specific enzymes. Fungus also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
