This document summarizes the five generations of computers from 1942 to the present. The first generation used vacuum tubes and ran from 1942-1954. The second generation used transistors from 1952-1964. The third generation used integrated circuits from 1964-1972. The fourth generation used VLSI technology from 1972-1990. The fifth generation began in 1990 and uses ULSI technology with a focus on parallel processing and artificial intelligence.
