This document summarizes the five generations of computers based on changes in technology. The first generation used vacuum tubes and were very large and expensive. The second generation used transistors and were smaller and cheaper than the first. The third generation used integrated circuits which made computers even smaller and less expensive. The fourth generation used microprocessors and VLSI circuits, allowing for the development of personal computers. The fifth generation uses ULSI technology and has led to true artificial intelligence and highly portable devices like laptops and tablets.
