This document summarizes the five generations of computers from 1940 to present. The first generation used vacuum tubes, were very large and expensive. The second generation introduced transistors, were more reliable and smaller. The third generation used integrated circuits which made computers smaller, cheaper, and faster. The fourth generation featured microprocessors and personal computers. The fifth generation is based on parallel processing, artificial intelligence, and very large scale integration.
