• Functions of ICT
• Need and importance of ICT in
Education
• Application of ICT in the field of
Education to improve quality
Data is raw material and information is finished product.
Information is nothing but refined data, that have been put into a
meaningful and useful context and communicated to a recipient who
uses it to make decision.
Data is defined as representation of facts, entities, ideas or
objects. It is only a symbolic representation of something we know
nothing about. It may be a number or collection of number.
Information is processed form of data. It is useful for
decision making process. e.g. ‘205’ is written on the paper. It is data.
But if 205 is the decimal count of the number of Students of DAV
college. Now it is become an information
Data capturing, storage and transmission is important function of
ICT. For getting information and developing information system of any activity
data is utmost essential which is captured with the aid of computer devices such
as hardware and software. Usually data is captured by key board, bar codes,
video camera, mouse etc..
Data storage within the framework of ICT is an issue of covering
space. It depends on following two factors.
• 1.Disk space availability.
• 2.Flexibility of ICT in terms of making the data available for use.
• ICT data is stored in storage media for later retrieval. Computer systems
translate all data and instructions into binary form (0,1) for storage purpose. For
data storage various memory devices such as magnetic tapes, floppy disk, hard
disc, pen drive etc. are used.
Data processing is the method of conversion of
data into meaningful information. The processing is done in series of
operations which converts inputs i.e. data either in the form of spatial
(geographical maps, images, satellite imageries, aerial photographs
etc.) or in the form of attribute (tabular data collected from in-situ
survey, government records or personal observations etc.) into output
i.e. information in the form of three dimensional model or in other
visual forms. The central processing unit (CPU) play a vital role in it.
Through ICT data can be transmitted from one
place to another place or from one computer to another computer.
For this purpose various devices like modem, cables are used. For
transmitting data, various types of networks like Local Area Network
(LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), Metropolitan Area Network
(MAN), internet, intranet, extranet etc. are used.
– Data manipulation is the process of summarizing,
re-arranging, reforming or mathematical calculations performed either
manually or by computer software. ICT helps in manipulating the data
and creates new information from existing informations.
for example
SPSS: Software Package for Social Sciences
R Software
Rax Software etc.
Data retrieval is the process of finding required information. ICT
supports the retrieval of inform ations either in the form of features or attribute
or both in a simulated form. Previously it was done and managed separately but
technological advancement perform more sophisticated manipulation retrieval
and analysis which makes easier to link various data of different kind of
informations in a single platform. Data can be retrieved from one source to
another source with the help of computer software. For this data query involves
the use of data values to display and analyze both the alpha numeric and
graphical data within an ICT framework.
Data display involves presenting of information in the form of text,
graphics, audio, video etc.. Display can be made through computer screen,
speakers and printers.
• ICT increases the
effectiveness of teaching
learning process so it can
be used for motivating
students to learn in a
different way.
• It gives immediate access
to richer source media
24*7.
• It is dynamic and
interactive.
• Continuing Education: Education is a life long process therefore ICT provides
many platforms to the learners. Anyone can browse the information anytime
anywhere and got the information which is required and updated their
knowledge.
• Providing Equity: Education should meet the needs of variety of learners and
therefore OER ( Open Educational Resources) are available for all without
discrimination. For example MOOC
• Updation of Knowledge: Information explosion is an ever increasing
phenomena therefore there is need to get access to this information
• Technological Literacy: It is a requirement of the society that the individuals
should posses technological literacy.
• Cost Reduction: There is need to increase access and bring down the cost of
education to meet the challenges of illiteracy and it is possible only with the
• ICT increases the effectiveness of teaching learning process so it can be used
for motivating students to learn in a different way.
• It makes learning more meaningful and enjoyable.
• It nurture the creativity among the learners.
• It provides immediate access to richer source media for 24*7.
• It provide quality education to those who are located in remote places.
• It is dynamic and interactive and prepare pupils to participate in a rapidly
changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly
transformed by access to varied and developing technology.
• Pupil use ICT tools to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present
information responsibly, creatively and with discrimination.
• ICT promoted independent learning and make student responsible for the
– With the help of ICT, teaching learning
process can be made more interactive and hence resulting in more
efficient. With the help of presentations, designing and simulation
several tough topics can be taught and learned in easier way.
– The notes and other important documents can be
digitized and hence transmitted easily. Books can easily be converted to
e-books which becomes more handy and easy to carry and use its
contents.
– With the help of various softwares online tests can be
done easily and the result, progress report and feedback can be
received immediately.
– With the help of various search engines and several web
sites, doing research has become easy. Moreover with the help of
internet a person can have access to any library of the world and can
talk to eminent scholars using e-mails, chatting, video conferencing etc.
– The administration of any educational organization
can be handled more effieciently with the help of various tools of ICT
such as CCTV and computers

It depends on following two factors. • 1.Disk space availability. • 2.Flexibility of ICT in terms of making the data available for use. • ICT data is stored in storage media for later retrieval. Computer systems translate all data and instructions into binary form (0,1) for storage purpose. For data storage various memory devices such as magnetic tapes, floppy disk, hard disc, pen drive etc. are used.
  • 5. Data processing is the method of conversion of data into meaningful information. The processing is done in series of operations which converts inputs i.e. data either in the form of spatial (geographical maps, images, satellite imageries, aerial photographs etc.) or in the form of attribute (tabular data collected from in-situ survey, government records or personal observations etc.) into output i.e. information in the form of three dimensional model or in other visual forms. The central processing unit (CPU) play a vital role in it. Through ICT data can be transmitted from one place to another place or from one computer to another computer. For this purpose various devices like modem, cables are used. For transmitting data, various types of networks like Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), internet, intranet, extranet etc. are used.
  • 6. – Data manipulation is the process of summarizing, re-arranging, reforming or mathematical calculations performed either manually or by computer software. ICT helps in manipulating the data and creates new information from existing informations. for example SPSS: Software Package for Social Sciences R Software Rax Software etc.
  • 7. Data retrieval is the process of finding required information. ICT supports the retrieval of inform ations either in the form of features or attribute or both in a simulated form. Previously it was done and managed separately but technological advancement perform more sophisticated manipulation retrieval and analysis which makes easier to link various data of different kind of informations in a single platform. Data can be retrieved from one source to another source with the help of computer software. For this data query involves the use of data values to display and analyze both the alpha numeric and graphical data within an ICT framework. Data display involves presenting of information in the form of text, graphics, audio, video etc.. Display can be made through computer screen, speakers and printers.
