This document describes the functional areas of the brain according to Brodmann's mapping. It discusses the primary motor area (area 4) located in the precentral gyrus, which controls voluntary muscle movements of the contralateral side of the body represented in an inverted homunculus map. It also describes the premotor area (area 6) anterior to the primary motor area, which is involved in programming movements. The supplementary motor area (area 8) on the medial frontal gyrus controls complex movements of posture. Other areas discussed include Broca's area (areas 44 and 45) responsible for speech production, and the prefrontal cortex (areas 9-12) involved in personality and higher cognitive functions.
