Merriam-Webster s Definition Of Confidence
Being confident, is one the most respectable character trait someone can have. Because having
confidence makes people able to fully accept themselves. Merriam Webster s definition of confidence
can mean one of two things depending on how it s used. The first definition of confidence is a feeling
or consciousness of one s powers or of reliance on one s circumstances. Having confidence in
someone is a big deal because it means putting trust in someone to carry through with something.
Putting too much confidence in someone because is that chance of getting let down. Now the second
definition from Merriam Webster s dictionary is a feeling or belief that you can do something well or
succeed at something. Someone who has confidence believes in ... Show more content on

Confidence is like a muscle: the more you use it, the stronger it gets . The reference to confidence
being a muscle suggests the more someone works on themselves can improve the way they think and
act. Having confidence can have a really positive impact on people s day to day life, as well as their
ability to achieve the things they want to do. The thing about confidence is that there is no official
measure of; if they feel confident then they probably are. People with no confidence tend to be down
on themselves and don t believe they can do anything right. Having no confidence can make a person
s life miserable. So the first time they gain confidence in themselves, they become a better and
stronger person. And once they have it no one can tell them any different about themselves because
they know what they are able to do. By someone honoring who they are and what they truly prefer in
life, it creates an environment of confidence. They re allowing themselves to be comfortable and
express themselves. In turn, they may attract the right people, opportunities and more in life. When the
right people and opportunities come along, it makes people feel confident because things are easy. The
origin of confidence comes from early 15th century middle French or directly from Latin confidentia,
from confidentem means to firmly trusting,

The Mission Chapel Essay

La Purisima A.) The mission chapel is beautiful. The beauty of this chapel can compare to the Santa
Barbara one. They both are bright in color. When in the chapels I get a warm feeling. Old artwork.
Kind of built like an ancient style building. Candles light up the room. B.) The natives daily duties
consisted of mixing mud with straws to make adobe bricks to build. The Spanish soldiers lived a more
foreign like lifestyle because the mission and their teachings were rather new to the natives. Some
natives were blacksmiths and would build and repair the tools of Spanish society. Gradually, Chumash
stone implements gave way to iron and steel. The Natives also lived by three basic laws. ... Show

The Natives did not know how to use fire arms or agricultural tools. The natives were accomplished
traders that had a monetary system based on beads and seashells. Traded herbs, baskets, tools and
other artifacts with other tribes and bands, in the spirit of sharing as opposed to one of profiteering.
Natives lived a hunter gatherer to an agricultural based one under the tutelage of the Spanish system.
Natives also created currency from seashells that have been found up and down the coast of
California. C.) Earthquakes had affected La Purisima in a major way. So major, the natives had to
relocate the original site from just outside of Lompoc, Ca. The natives refused to return to the original
site, so the missions father decided to relocate to an area called La Canada de los Berros, a little
further from Lompoc, about four miles north. The fathers rebuilt the Mission but decided to put the
buildings in a straight line instead of the normal square shape since it would be more difficult for the
buildings to damage each other if they fell during another earthquake. La Purisima is the only Mission
not to follow the quadrangle shape of the rest of the Missions. La Canada de los Berros means The
Canyon of the water cress , this new site had several advantages: a better water supply, a better
climate, and a closer and safer access to El

Political, Economic, And Political Changes In The Middle Ages
In the High Middle ages (after 1000 A.D) and beyond there were major political, economic and
intellectual changes that happed across Europe. The changes helped bring about new eras to the
European landscape. As Europe was brought into these new eras, it thus brought upon the end of the
Dark Ages. Looking first at the political changes that took place across Europe we can break it down
into four key areas, the first of which is England. England had suffered more from Viking invasions
than any other part of Europe and eventually fell under Viking rule with Viking Canute (McKay 254).
Until Canute passed away and William of Normandy claimed the throne, the English kings had little
power outside of calling for war. After William of Normandy took control of the throne, he limited the
power of the nobles and church officials, and built a unified monarchy to help centralize England
(McKay 255). Along with this he created laws, including a centralized tax system, and took control of
the judicial system. This centralizing of England continued with William s successors. In 1215, King
John was forced to sign the Magna Carta which limited the power of the king and later became the
basis for Parliament. The next area is France, which was known as the most powerful kingdom within
Europe, but the kings themselves lacked power. Again this changed once it fell under a new ruler,
Philip II. Philip II began waging war and expanding their territory starting with Normandy. Along with
this,

Examples Of Hypocritical Characters In Hamlet
Nobody likes a hypocrite. People who say one thing and do another can never be trusted. In Hamlet, a
tragedy written by William Shakespeare, there are shady, hypocritical interactions with characters.
Many characters have sneaky qualities that go against their roles in the play. Hamlet is proven to be
one of the most complicated and hypocritical characters through his individual qualities, his
interactions with the queen and his aspirations to murder.
Hamlet has many contrasting qualities. He acts rashly at times, and other times over thinks his actions.
Often he acts wild and uncivil, while other times he acts like the prince he is supposed to be. From the
time he is introduced to the play, he is puzzling and a curious character to try to ... Show more content

When King Hamlet is murdered, Hamlet is so full of consuming anger and wants to avenge his father
s wrongful death. Although the Queen says, Thou know st tis common, all that lives must die/Passing
through nature to eternity (1.2.71 2), Hamlet does not find that comforting. He remembers the loving
and tenderness his father showed towards his mother. This tortures Hamlet and pains him to see his
mother so unaffected by her husband s death. Hamlet has just begun to express his feelings to his
mother about her marriage and her intimate relations with Claudius, which he considers disgusting,
adulterous, incestuous, and wicked. It is impossible for him to add any additional feelings to those
which have already driven him half mad. (Delaney, 2012). His father, the ghost, tells Hamlet to leave
his mother out of it and let heaven decide her fate. But, howsoever thou pursuest this act, Taint not thy
mind, nor let thy soul contrive, Against thy mother aught: leave her to heaven, And to those thorns that
in her bosom lodge, To prick and sting her. (1.5.9). He loves his father and wants to respect his wishes,

Olmec Culture Research Paper
The Olmec culture is one of the oldest cultures in Mesoamerica. The Olmecs were known as one of
the oldest cultures, as well as, the mother culture of mesoamerican cultures and were estimated to be
around from 1000 to 500 BC. The name Olmec comes from the Mexica cultures that came after. It was
not the name that the people of this culture named themselves, the name they called themselves has
been lost through history. The Olmec culture was the culture that produced rubber, and had great
workmanship in which they were able to create jade masks, celts, ornaments and tools using different
materials such as gold. This culture was able to develop and stay alive througout the ages for so long
due to the fertility of their land which came from their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Olmec mask is not the size of a present day human face, but rather much smaller, and could be
compared to the size of the palm of an adults hand. The color is a deep green with a tint of grey, which
has come from the aging of the stone. While there is evidence of cremation in the mesoamerican
cultures, the color of this mask proves that the mask was not on the body during the cremation
process, but rather after the ashes were put into the body bundle. In order to create these masks, the
olmecs would carve the faces into the rock that would be used as the mask. To create the mouth, eyes
and other deep incised areas, they used a technique in which they would attach a string to two pieces
of wood and move in a saw like motion in order to heat and shape the stone. There is no negative
space evident in the masks such as no holes for the eyes, nose, or mouth, only in the earlobes for
attachment to the corpse bundle. When analyzing the iconography of the Olmec mask, the viewer
must question the symbolic meaning and the use of conventionalized imagery. Although the symbolic
meaning was not explicitly stated in any of the ancient codecies or texts, it is assumed that the mask
was a way to give the deciesed a face for what could be the afterlife, or simply to identify the bundle.
On the other hand, the repeated use of certain aspects in the mask such as the closed, squinting

Encounters With An Archdruid Summary
Taylor Cox AP Environmental Science 2 April 2017 Encounters with an Archdruid details the
adventures of environmentalist David Brower, as a compoundment of narratives...of journeys made in
three wildernesses on a coastal island, in a Western mountain range, and on the Colorado River in the
Grand Canyon. (McPhee, 2). Journalist John McPhee wrote the book after researching Brower s tales
of struggle against miners, developers, and even the United States Bureau of Reclamation. Encounters
with an Archdruid is broken into three sections, one for each of Bower s adventures. The first explains
Brower s interaction with Charles Park, a mineral engineer inent locating and utilizing mineral
reserves in Glacier Peak Wilderness. Charles Park is depicted in the book as calculating and realistic
minded, unwilling to give up his immediate economic gain in order to leave the the environment intact

beings to those trees (McPhee 32), which inspired the the title of the book, Encounters with an

and thus the real estate developer is also depicted as calculating like Park. Fraser possesses a vision of
development that means land is regulated and controlled by corporations, not free for the public to
use: which starkly contrasts Brower s personal views. McPhee emphasizes the fact that Fraser still
considers himself a true conservationist, despite his development plans. But Brower continued to fight
Fraser, and eventually forced Fraser to sell the land he had purchased on Cumberland Island to the
National Park Foundation, after receiving an impressive amount of support for his conservationist

Manhattan Project History
The Manhattan Project was one, if not the most, secretive projects to take place in the history of the
United States of America. Dating back to World War II, its purpose was to create a bomb capable of
splitting atoms apart. The project was a success and resulted in one of the most devastating bombs
ever to be developed and utilized by mankind. Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, the
acting Presidents during the time, faced many factors that were involved in deciding to proceed with
developing and ultimately, dropping the bomb. August, 1939, Albert Einstein was residing in a Nazi
occupied Germany. Upon discovering that Germany was in the process of researching and developing

Intercultural Interview Essay
For the intercultural interview, I decided to interview my friend Medelyn, a 19 year old female of
Honduran and Mexican descent. During the interview, I focused on her Honduran culture, as she was
born in Honduras, I asked her a multitude of various questions ranging from formalities in her culture
to gender roles to classism in her culture.. The interview lasted about twenty minutes, I asked her
about fifteen questions, and after she answered each question there would be a small discussion about
her answer. When interviewing Medelyn, it was important to rid myself of any ethnocentrism,
assumed cultural similarity or differences, stereotyping, and anything that could create a bias and

with a question inquiring whether Honduras was more of a masculine or feminine society. Masculine
societies tend to focus on competition, strength and dominance, contrarily, feminine societies have a
tendency to concentrate on being caring and supportive. Medelyn described Honduras as a place
where relationships tended to be more caring, traditional and supportive. My next question was about
individualism and whether or not Honduras was more of an individualist or collectivist society.
Individualist cultures, as stated in Chapter 3, Value personal rights and responsibilities, privacy,
voicing one s opinion, freedom, innovation and self expression. , while collectivities cultures value
community, collaboration, shared interests, harmony, the public good, and avoiding embarrassment.
Medelyn described Honduras as A place where being loyal to the community is valued and there is
shared blame and responsibilities. , which would mean Honduras is more of a collectivist society,
given the description of community being valued rather than individuals, meaning that people care for
the welfare of the society. Context was the subject of my next question, figuring out whether
Honduras was a low or high context society was what I inquired from Medelyn. A lot of
communication is done by hand signals, body movements,

The Influence Of Popular Culture In The 60 s
The swinging sixties and living in the seventies were still very much the domain of the baby boomer
generation as the prosperous post World War II period continued to generate the conditions for youth
culture to thrive. Popular culture in the 60s was not significantly different to the late 50s although the
increase of surf culture and influence of Jazz music was having some impact. This was because many
Australians lived near the coast of surf beaches in which a rise of surfboard riding involved speed,
danger and skills that attracted teenagers. It gave them a new sense of identity, freedom and rebellion.
It was the unbelievable musicians that captured the imaginations of many people such as The Beatles,

The Life of Elizabeth Barrett Browning Essay
Elizabeth Barrett Moulton Barrett was born March 6, 1806 in Durham, England to Edward Barrett
Moulton Barrett and Mary Graham Clarke. She was the eldest of twelve. Her father made the family
fortune from a sugar plantation. In 1809, the Barretts moved to an estate called Hope End in England.
Elizabeth Barrett s childhood was spent happily at the family s home in England. She had no formal
education, learning solely from her brother s tutor and from her continuous reading. She managed over
the years to learn Greek, Latin, Hebrew, French, Italian, German, and Spanish. She learned rapidly
and began writing at an early age.
At the age of twelve, Barrett composed her early epic, The Battle of Marathon, which her father had

It was favorably reviewed and sold well. This marked the start of her successful literary career. But
these years were also full of illness and sadness for her. A burst blood vessel in her lungs resulted in
bed rest. Even though constrained by illness, she corresponded with prominent members of the literary
world, including Wordsworth, Carlyle, and Edgar Allan Poe (The Victorian Web).
Eventually Barrett moved to Torquay, on the seaside, for her health. Her brother Edward stayed with
her as her companion. In 1838 the news of the death of Barrett s favorite uncle reached her. This uncle
left enough money to her to make her financially secure. Two years later Barrett s brother Edward
drowned in Babbacombe Bay off Torquay. This left the mourning Elizabeth Barrett ill for months. She
blamed herself for the death of her brother because she brought him with her to Torquay. The literary
result of this tragedy was the poem De Profundis, which sharply delineates Elizabeth Barrett s sense of
grief and devastation following her brother s death (Radley 20).
In 1841 Elizabeth Barrett returned to the family home in London as an invalid. She stayed confined in
her room and worked on book reviews and articles. The Cry of the Children was published one year
later. This was a popular work that helped bring about the regulation of child labor. In 1844 she
published a two volume edition of her poems; in October of that same year, an American edition with

Ms. Kalick/Carlton Candide s Garden Candide is a satire written by Voltaire. Voltaire wrote it to poke
fun at Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz s idea of philosophical optimism, the belief that we live in the best of

the satire, strongly believes in. Another philosophy that is stated in the satire is Candide s, but let us

Pros And Cons Of Vegetarianism
When any organism is still an infant, they fail to acknowledge societal norms and decision making,
but instead, only their genetic makeup dictates their actions. Therefore, many conclusions involving
inherent responses are drawn from experiments involving infants. For example, both a human baby
and a lion cub possess an innate sense of hunger, which drives them to seek out nutrition in order to
survive. When a hungry baby is placed in a crib with both a banana and a small rabbit (two sources of
food), it immediately responds by reaching for the banana to satiate this hunger sensation. Whereas, if
the lion cub, or any other animal designed to eat meat faces this situation, say sayonara to the rabbit.
This example, used by many vegetarian advocates, illustrates that at the core of our species, we are
designed to operate under a plant based diet. Of course, over the span of millions of years, humans
adapted to cater to changing environments, thus allowing for heavier protein diets. Still, we are
foundationally designed to eat more like vegetarians, with meat as a complement to this plant based
diet. In recent centuries, the reliance on meat as the main substance of our diets has surfaced. This
protein phenomenon causes many physiological issues in the human body due to the inability to
process this amount of meat. Based on evolutionary evidence, humans were intended to execute a
strictly plant based diet, but evolved over millions of years to allow for meat consumption.

Saint Augustine Essay
Many consider Saint Augustine of Hippo a main figure in the development of orthodox Christian
doctrine during the early Christian Church. Augustine was born in Northern Africa in AD 354. His
father was a pagan and his mother a Christian. Though his parents were not extremely well to do, they
had enough money to allow Augustine to obtain an education in the liberal arts. This education will
eventually affect how he sees Christianity, especially concerning the use of neo Platonic ideas in
Christian theology.
Augustine converted to orthodox Christianity late in life. He struggled with the many earthly things he
needed to give up for a complete conversion of body, mind, and soul. It is in Confessions that
Augustine shows the world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was during this time that Augustine discovered the appealing ideas that Christianity had to offer.
The most appealing idea of Christianity to Augustine was that it allowed for a logical view of God, as
well having a certain amount of mystery. In Confessions, Augustine continually discusses the
importance of his education in the liberal art as an important aspect of his understanding of
Christianity. Using logic, Augustine understood the Christian ideas of sin, evil, and God s relationship
to humanity and all creation. He believes it is a man s natural state to want to be near God spiritually,
yet in their weak state of flesh, they often move away from the one thing they yearn for most, which is
God. Augustine says of this, to praise you [God] is the desire of man, a little piece of your creation.
You stir man to take pleasure in praising you, because you have made us for yourself, and our heart is
restless until it rests in you .
Since the idea of logic in religion was appealing for Augustine, it opened the door for the use of pagan
philosophical ideals to enter Christian doctrine. Augustine was especially interested in the Platonist
and Neo Platonists views on God. Throughout Confessions, Augustine uses many of these
philosophical views to show that Christian ideals are indeed logical. He found

The Lyme Disease
Lyme disease has been identified as an infection surrounded by complications, starting from its
discovery to diagnosis. The Lyme infection was discovered first during the mid 1970, following the
attribution of juvenile arthritis outbreak to this disease near Old Lyme, Connecticut. The naming of the
disease was established in 1977, although the complications of the causative agent lasted an additional
five years, after which medical scientists identified the deer tick midgut Borrelia burgdorferi
spirochete as the supposed causative agent (Lyme Research Alliance, n.d.).
In the US, the illness is the most prevalent of all tick borne infections. The disease has been termed in
New York, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New
Jersey, Minnesota, and Maryland an endemic infection. As of 2009, provides the most useful data

persistent. However, the complication of the Lyme disease at this point is connected to the lack of
universal recognition of the condition, even by experts in infectious disease. Thus, the diagnosis of
Lyme disease becomes a controversial presentation (Lyme Research Alliance, n.d.). The chronic stage

Socrates s Views On Philosophy And It s Influences...
Perhaps in the present moment, there would have been no such information on philosophy and it s
influences without the existence of Socrates. Socrates was an individual who was acknowledged as an
eminent philosopher. We have received his intelligence from others who have documented his
speeches, due to the fact that in the past, he had not personally recorded himself. I find it rather
intriguing that despite the fact that Socrates, alongside his pupils, have endured life many years ago, it
is still pertinent in todays society. I have appointed myself to compose about Socrates s dialogue on
The Apology . Socrates is notorious for his wisdom, in conjunction with his competence to prevail
upon you that your dictums are spurious and that his, in fact, are equitable. I have also come to the
agreement to write about The Apology by reason of that this is the closest to him that we will ever get
too. Additionally, The Apology is inherently the inauguration of Western Philosophy.
Socrates is known for his capability to arouse conversation among others. He produces this method in
which he essentially forces each person in the discussion to think twice before they supply others with
their remarks. His method is also a form dialogue, which is where you bequeath material and take
away material. In The Apology , Socrates generates a speech in the vicinity of the trial in which he is
charged with not recognizing the Gods, inventing new Gods, dishonoring the current Gods, and with

A Human s Five Senses
A human s five senses are normally separate from each other, with no one particular sense having an
exact and direct relation to another. This statement is true for most, but not for everyone. There are
individuals who experience a condition called synesthesia, in which two or more of the five senses can
possibly trigger one another. Oftentimes people with this condition do not realize that their perception
differs from most people around them. Two people, one with this condition and one without it, could
see or feel everything entirely differently, a fascinating phenomenon that scientists have begun to
study. After much analysis done by the scientists, three distinguishing types have been identified to
most commonly affect specific senses. One of the three most common types of synesthesia that affects
a human s perception is called grapheme to color. This type describes the process of sensing or
physically seeing a projected color when a letter is shown or thought of. Interestingly enough, due to
this unchanging perspective, a synesthete may feel unsettled if a letter is in a color that does not match
the color they see for that specific letter. Seeing letters in accordance to color may help a student learn
better in terms of being able to name letters and remember their colors. According to World Book
Advanced, synesthesia experiments: ...have involved synesthetes in whom color sensations are
triggered by letters of the alphabet (www.worldbookonline.com). Scientific

A Very Brief Look at Brazil
INTRODUCTION
When I first started to think on a subject to write about on this essay, I wanted to choose something
about my own culture. When I think about my home country, Brazil, the first thing that comes to my
mind as an expression of our culture, and probably the first thing that comes to everybody s minds, is
the Carnival and, of course, the Samba. Samba is the best known most enduring style in Brazil. It is
the samba rhythm that provides the background music for the most spectacular Rio carnival and the
sophisticated dance that helped to bring Brazil the exotic image that is well known throughout the
world. If you want to learn about Brazilian history without going through the books, you just listen to
its music. Samba has an importance that goes far beyond than entertainment. Music is a national
passion, as the football, of course. Both are a misture inside all Brazilians, so on this essay I am going
to discuss this amazing and enormous party and the different ways it affects the Brazilian culture and
its population, dividing it into Historical/Cultural, Political and Psychological analysis.
Historical, Cultural Social
The word carnival comes from Latin, Carne Vale or Farewell to the Flesh (brazilproductions). Ten
thousand years b.c., men, women and children gathered in the summer with masked and painted faces
to scare away the demons of bad harvest bodies. The origins of Carnival have been sought in the
oldest celebrations of humanity, such as the Egyptian

Shame In The Puritan Era
Statistics show that public humiliation is one of the most common fears. As many admit to this fear,
many also grasp to this concept and shame one another for absurd conditions. In the Puritan Era, many
methods were used to publicly shame someone for their wrong doing. One of their common methods
was to openly tell their sin to the whole community. One of their extreme approaches was hanging
someone. This showed the public to follow the regulations of the town and do not do anything against
them. Fast forward to modern times, the scheme of humiliating one another changed drastically. For
instance, many occurrences pertain from social media. In 1994, the first site of social media was
created. From this point on, millions of different sites ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In today s society, the influence of social media, politics, and the blame of women, ignite a new way
of publicly humiliating others. Initially, social media created a way to communicate with others and
receive updates through one s life. As the power of this concept grew, and the more advanced
technology created, people started to bully over the internet; called cyberbullying. Many incidents of
cyberbullying occur, which grew into the primary way of bullying. Politics represent America, and
essentially define the country. As a whole, eliminating public shame pertains to one of the goals of this
country, but if representatives start to persuade the society, fundamentally, everyone will accept the
thought of public humiliation. Lastly, the stereotypical perception of women is known as blaming
another for one s actions or their appearance. As this stands in people s minds, many are blind to the
fact that women actually receive shame for their bodies, self, and jobs more than men. The law now
participates in the action of stopping the shame, but also intervenes with the supervision of
prostitution, sex trafficking, and any illegal operations women participate in. With the influences of
social media, politics, and the two sides of women in public shaming, this concept brings forth
attention to the society itself. It calls for help in the world, to stop this humiliation and shaming of

Significant Difference Between The Spanish And New England...
In 1492, Columbus came to the New World along with fifty other Spanish men. Those men spread
Catholicism throughout the native population, as well as settling to form their own colonies. Year
later, settlers from New England began colonizing in the New World spreading beliefs of Puritanism
as well as forming an economy apart from the Old World. The role of religion and economy were
significantly different during the two different colonizations periods, while the treatment of the native
population was significantly similar.
The role of religion between the Spanish and New England colonies were significantly different due to
the conquistadors and salvation mentality in the Spanish, and the strong Puritan beliefs in the New
England colonists. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Spanish colonies the encomienda system setup slavery in the form of labor to the natives. In the
Spanish colonies, the natives were set under the encomienda system where the natives were used as
slaves for their protection, in return for their labor. The natives were also forced to undergo a
conversion in religion under this system. The Spanish soldiers believed natives were only fit to be
tortured and killed. If the natives did not convert, the Spanish would torture and kill natives. Similar to
the Spanish colonies encomienda system, the New England colonies had indentured servitude. During
the early settlements colonists were mostly friendly with the natives. Soon, in the colonies of Virginia
and Maryland, chattel slavery and indentured servitude amongst the natives were vast. The English
believed the natives were property and compared to animals. In indentured servitude the natives were
granted freedom by the English in return for their work, just how to the Spanish granted protection for
their labor. For instance, slaves were the main work force when it came to tobacco and sugar in the
northern New England colonies. Due to the longevity of the contract the natives were never granted
their headrights. On the other hand, in the colony of Pennsylvania the

Hanif Kureishi s My Son the Fanatic and Amy Tan s Two...
In a world which is only now beginning to emerge from the shackles of colonialism, both former
empires and the nations once subdued by their hegemony have entered a transitional period defined by
uncertainty and the loss of collective identity. Compounding matters is the delicate balance that
expatriates from former colonies turned independent countries, such as Pakistan, India, and Hong
Kong, must seek to achieve while residing in the former motherland of Great Britain. For the most
ambitious and hopeful immigrants, the arduous process of assimilation from pre colonial society to the
very seat of imperial power which once exercised dominion over your homeland from afar can be a
jarring metamorphosis. Two exquisitely written short stories published during the tumultuous
postcolonial period of the late 1980s and early 1990 s, Hanif Kureishi s My Son the Fanatic and Amy
Tan s Two Kinds, harness the provocative power of prose to explore the quintessentially modern
cultural theme of dual and transitional identity. By juxtaposing the paternal expectation of father
Parvez with the harsh reality his militarized, extremist son Ali, Kureishi exposes the fallacious notion
of the British dream offered to immigrants from former colonies around the world. Through her
wrenching tale of the divisions sewn between Chinese mothers, who lived through the Communist
Cultural Revolution, and their Americanized daughters struggling to bear the burden of competing
customs, Tan examines the

Antisocial Personality Disorder Paper
Antisocial Personality Disorder Personality disorders are a class of mental disorders. People with
mental disorders in general typically have a staggered pattern of thinking, functioning, and behaving.
Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is a mental condition in which a person has a long term
pattern of manipulating, exploiting, or violating the right of others. (Berger 2016). In other words,
ASPD is a condition where people suffering with the disorder tend to no care about rules or laws, and
are likely to act on their impulsiveness to commit a crime. In the 1940s and 1950s, research was done

punishment or negative consequences for any unlawful behavior have been able to work for some
people. When people with this condition do not want to have treatment, the court may have to order
them to receive treatment with negative consequences if they do not comply. Many people with cases

Strengths Of Strengths In Public Speaking
My first strength in public speaking is my organization and preparation skills. I think that I am
particularly skilled in creating and preparing a presentation that is straightforward and informational. I
know how to effectively organize my presentation in such a manner that will appeal to my audience.
In addition, I spend an ample amount of time preparing for my presentation. However, there is
definitely room for improvement. I need a bit more practice in trying to make my presentations more
concise. For example, I used to present to high school students on financial literacy. Initially my
presentations were too long, but as my presentations progressed they were shorter while still retaining
important information. I would like to hone this skill as much as I possibly can.
My next strength in public speaking is my eye contact. I am able to face my audience and express
positive nonverbal communication by maintaining eye contact and giving my audience my undivided
attention. Interestingly enough, I feel that sometimes my eye contact can be too excessive in the sense
that I look around too much. I was told of this by one of my friends while I did a presentation on the
civil rights movement. I can strive to improve this strength by learning how to hold eye contact longer
with certain individuals as opposed to constantly looking around. This may be a bit uncomfortable to
me, but I intend to challenge myself to attempt it.
Another strength is my voice projection. I believe that I

The Black Of Black Criminal Labels
Welch (2007) instituted her article with details of speculations and theories that coincided to the
development of Black criminal labels. Now, the Black criminal labels are basically the stereotypes that
black people are commonly involve or associate with regarding with crime. She thought it was a
plausible concept to understand the images of crime shown by a society. She explicates on racial
stereotypes through crime rates, black involvement in crimes, media, and racial hoaxes. For instance,
young black males in America are commonly perceived as violent, gang affiliated, and sustain by
other labels everywhere. She mentions talking about crime is talking about race which has adapted to
the publics minds throughout a wide range in history (Welch, 2007; Barlow, 1998, p.151). Welch gives
an example of a common white stereotype of African Americans as being less controlled, and more
prone to crime than whites which adds to the public s conception of criminality (2007; Higginbotham,
2002, p.147). Through the various factors, like black involvement in crime have contributed to the
criminal stereotyping of blacks. Concerning this, Randall Kennedy interpreted how the reputation of
Blacks has been besieged by beliefs from white people about inclinations beforehand towards criminal
activity that could be traced back to when Africans were held in captivity (1997; Welch, 2007). His
statement conveyed that African Americans have had this reputation for decades. The real

Relationship Between My Husband And Child For My Future...
Relationship is defined as the way in which two or more concepts or people are connected. This means
like how two people can relate with one another or generally just how the relationship works. We all
know that it takes a lot to make any relationship work whether it s a marriage or even just in making
friendships work. There are certain components that must be present to make it work. In addition,
there s also the question of what are you willing to invest in the relationship. Personally, I have a few
ideas of what I would expect in my husband and child for my future family. Communication is one of
the most important aspects of making a relationship work. I want a husband who I can just talk to. I
want to be able to talk about my emotions, spiritual aspects, and just about anything about my life. My
number one priority however would have to be finding someone who I can be myself with. I want
someone who ll understand me and my culture or at least someone who s open minded. It also helps if
we have the same beliefs especially in deciding what we would teach our children or how we would
raise them. Having the same beliefs would decrease the amount of arguing or compromising we have
to go through. He should also have the same expectations in the relationship and the willingness to be
in it. For example, when I marry someone, divorce is not an option unless the circumstances are really
bad and almost unbearable. He must understand that, and he must understand my beliefs. In

A lung or heart transplant is then recommended for patients whose condition doesn t improve or
worsens. The survival rate according to nurse Vacca for patients receiving lung transplant is 74% after
1 year and 45% after 5 years of receiving the new lung. However, he said the wait time for donor lung
can take up to 3 years but sadly patients with PAH can not wait that long. Therefore nurse Vacca
emphasized the importance of educating families and patients with PAH the proper management of
this condition in order for patients to live longer and have a better quality of life. Some of the
examples he mentioned in the proper management of this condition includes proper administration of
medication including knowing its side effects, appropriate planning of activities and rest, reducing
fluid retention by following a low sodium diet, daily weight monitoring and being alert in recognizing
peripheral edema, the use of supplemental oxygen if needed, and knowing when to contact a health
care provider upon onset of symptoms. Most importantly, encourage patients to discuss end of life

The Jazz And The Blues
Music and dancing was also another influence that occurred during this time period. Jazz and the
Blues were the most common and well known types of music, which could have sometimes been
involved in the types of dancing that happened in the Roaring 20s. The type of music that we call jazz
was a great turning point between the whites and the African Americans who were segregated. It
lessened the amount of segregation between the two races and brought people of all races together no
matter what color they were. The music helped people that were in need of jobs and the main places
that were affected were New York and Chicago. An important figure in the history of jazz was Louis
Armstrong who played the trumpet and cornet to play his music. Along with jazz, the blues was a type
of music that was inspired by the African Americans of that time. The African Americans that started
the blues were in churches or either in hollers working in the fields. They would sing these songs as
they worked hard on the long days on the farm. The blues first started from the African Americans
located in the Mississippi Delta. There were many different types of dances that are still being used
today even though it was made about a hundred years ago. Some of these dances included the
Charleston, the Tango, the Shimmy, and many more other dances. Dance was the entertainment of the

Summary Of The Mikado
Mikado Position Paper The Mikado is a comic operetta, in two acts, composed in 1885. It was first
performed on stage at the Savoy Theatre, in London. It has been said that this operetta consists of
racist comments and stereotyping. After thoroughly researching about The Mikado, I have come to the
conclusion that The Mikado production in Seattle is offensive, due to their choice of portrayal. This
operetta intended to satire the British society, not the Japanese people. In my opinion, the goal of a
satire is not accomplished. The librettist merely jokes about the British politics through the eyes of
Japanese people. This makes it offensive because, at that time, the Japanese were killed and driven out
in the 1800s. What was accepted then does not justify its perpetuation today. People should not be
insensitive to the dangers of stereotyping in public as they can cause damage that a lot of people are
unaware of (Northwestern Asian Weekly, 2014).
To being with, the Seattle production of this operetta hired white actors to play Japanese people. It was
entirely comprised of white actors who are transformed into Japanese characters with the help of
makeup. Where did all the Asian actors go? What made Gilbert want to utilize white actors? The white
actors dressed up to depict Japanese people is unfair because they are portrayed as archaic, and is not
even relevant to this time. Japan was not even part of the British politics at that time, yet Japanese

Because having confidence makes people able to fully accept themselves. Merriam Webster s definition of confidence can mean one of two things depending on how it s used. The first definition of confidence is a feeling or consciousness of one s powers or of reliance on one s circumstances. Having confidence in someone is a big deal because it means putting trust in someone to carry through with something. The reference to confidence being a muscle suggests the more someone works on themselves can improve the way they think and act. Having confidence can have a really positive impact on people s day to day life, as well as their ability to achieve the things they want to do. The thing about confidence is that there is no official measure of; if they feel confident then they probably are. People with no confidence tend to be down on themselves and don t believe they can do anything right. Having no confidence can make a person s life miserable. So the first time they gain confidence in themselves, they become a better and stronger person. And once they have it no one can tell them any different about themselves because they know what they are able to do. By someone honoring who they are and what they truly prefer in life, it creates an environment of confidence. They re allowing themselves to be comfortable and express themselves. The natives daily duties consisted of mixing mud with straws to make adobe bricks to build. The Spanish soldiers lived a more foreign like lifestyle because the mission and their teachings were rather new to the natives. Some natives were blacksmiths and would build and repair the tools of Spanish society. Gradually, Chumash stone implements gave way to iron and steel. The Natives also lived by three basic laws. ... Natives also created currency from seashells that have been found up and down the coast of California. C.) Earthquakes had affected La Purisima in a major way. So major, the natives had to relocate the original site from just outside of Lompoc, Ca. The natives refused to return to the original site, so the missions father decided to relocate to an area called La Canada de los Berros, a little further from Lompoc, about four miles north. The fathers rebuilt the Mission but decided to put the buildings in a straight line instead of the normal square shape since it would be more difficult for the buildings to damage each other if they fell during another earthquake. La Purisima is the only Mission not to follow the quadrangle shape of the rest of the Missions. • 4. Political, Economic, And Political Changes In The Middle Ages In the High Middle ages (after 1000 A.D) and beyond there were major political, economic and intellectual changes that happed across Europe. The changes helped bring about new eras to the European landscape. As Europe was brought into these new eras, it thus brought upon the end of the Dark Ages. Looking first at the political changes that took place across Europe we can break it down into four key areas, the first of which is England. England had suffered more from Viking invasions than any other part of Europe and eventually fell under Viking rule with Viking Canute (McKay 254). The next area is France, which was known as the most powerful kingdom within Europe, but the kings themselves lacked power. Again this changed once it fell under a new ruler, Philip II. Philip II began waging war and expanding their territory starting with Normandy. Along with this, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hamlet is proven to be one of the most complicated and hypocritical characters through his individual qualities, his interactions with the queen and his aspirations to murder. Hamlet has many contrasting qualities. He acts rashly at times, and other times over thinks his actions. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When King Hamlet is murdered, Hamlet is so full of consuming anger and wants to avenge his father s wrongful death. Although the Queen says, Thou know st tis common, all that lives must die/Passing through nature to eternity (1.2.71 2), Hamlet does not find that comforting. He remembers the loving and tenderness his father showed towards his mother. This tortures Hamlet and pains him to see his mother so unaffected by her husband s death. Hamlet has just begun to express his feelings to his mother about her marriage and her intimate relations with Claudius, which he considers disgusting, adulterous, incestuous, and wicked. It is impossible for him to add any additional feelings to those which have already driven him half mad. (Delaney, 2012). His father, the ghost, tells Hamlet to leave his mother out of it and let heaven decide her fate. But, howsoever thou pursuest this act, Taint not thy mind, nor let thy soul contrive, Against thy mother aught: leave her to heaven, And to those thorns that in her bosom lodge, To prick and sting her. The Olmecs were known as one of the oldest cultures, as well as, the mother culture of mesoamerican cultures and were estimated to be around from 1000 to 500 BC. The name Olmec comes from the Mexica cultures that came after. It was not the name that the people of this culture named themselves, the name they called themselves has been lost through history. The Olmec culture was the culture that produced rubber, and had great workmanship in which they were able to create jade masks, celts, ornaments and tools using different materials such as gold. The Olmec mask is not the size of a present day human face, but rather much smaller, and could be compared to the size of the palm of an adults hand. The color is a deep green with a tint of grey, which has come from the aging of the stone. While there is evidence of cremation in the mesoamerican cultures, the color of this mask proves that the mask was not on the body during the cremation process, but rather after the ashes were put into the body bundle. In order to create these masks, the olmecs would carve the faces into the rock that would be used as the mask. To create the mouth, eyes and other deep incised areas, they used a technique in which they would attach a string to two pieces of wood and move in a saw like motion in order to heat and shape the stone. There is no negative space evident in the masks such as no holes for the eyes, nose, or mouth, only in the earlobes for attachment to the corpse bundle. When analyzing the iconography of the Olmec mask, the viewer must question the symbolic meaning and the use of conventionalized imagery. Although the symbolic meaning was not explicitly stated in any of the ancient codecies or texts, it is assumed that the mask was a way to give the deciesed a face for what could be the afterlife, or simply to identify the bundle. On the other hand, the repeated use of certain aspects in the mask such as the closed, squinting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Pros And Cons Of Vegetarianism When any organism is still an infant, they fail to acknowledge societal norms and decision making, but instead, only their genetic makeup dictates their actions. Therefore, many conclusions involving inherent responses are drawn from experiments involving infants. For example, both a human baby and a lion cub possess an innate sense of hunger, which drives them to seek out nutrition in order to survive. When a hungry baby is placed in a crib with both a banana and a small rabbit (two sources of food), it immediately responds by reaching for the banana to satiate this hunger sensation. Whereas, if the lion cub, or any other animal designed to eat meat faces this situation, say sayonara to the rabbit. This example, used by many vegetarian advocates, illustrates that at the core of our species, we are designed to operate under a plant based diet. Of course, over the span of millions of years, humans adapted to cater to changing environments, thus allowing for heavier protein diets. Still, we are foundationally designed to eat more like vegetarians, with meat as a complement to this plant based diet. In recent centuries, the reliance on meat as the main substance of our diets has surfaced. This protein phenomenon causes many physiological issues in the human body due to the inability to process this amount of meat. Based on evolutionary evidence, humans were intended to execute a strictly plant based diet, but evolved over millions of years to allow for meat consumption. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The most appealing idea of Christianity to Augustine was that it allowed for a logical view of God, as well having a certain amount of mystery. In Confessions, Augustine continually discusses the importance of his education in the liberal art as an important aspect of his understanding of Christianity. Using logic, Augustine understood the Christian ideas of sin, evil, and God s relationship to humanity and all creation. He believes it is a man s natural state to want to be near God spiritually, yet in their weak state of flesh, they often move away from the one thing they yearn for most, which is God. Augustine says of this, to praise you [God] is the desire of man, a little piece of your creation. You stir man to take pleasure in praising you, because you have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you . Since the idea of logic in religion was appealing for Augustine, it opened the door for the use of pagan philosophical ideals to enter Christian doctrine. Augustine was especially interested in the Platonist and Neo Platonists views on God. Throughout Confessions, Augustine uses many of these philosophical views to show that Christian ideals are indeed logical. He found ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I find it rather intriguing that despite the fact that Socrates, alongside his pupils, have endured life many years ago, it is still pertinent in todays society. This statement is true for most, but not for everyone. There are individuals who experience a condition called synesthesia, in which two or more of the five senses can possibly trigger one another. Oftentimes people with this condition do not realize that their perception differs from most people around them. Two people, one with this condition and one without it, could see or feel everything entirely differently, a fascinating phenomenon that scientists have begun to study. After much analysis done by the scientists, three distinguishing types have been identified to most commonly affect specific senses. One of the three most common types of synesthesia that affects a human s perception is called grapheme to color. This type describes the process of sensing or physically seeing a projected color when a letter is shown or thought of. Interestingly enough, due to this unchanging perspective, a synesthete may feel unsettled if a letter is in a color that does not match the color they see for that specific letter. Seeing letters in accordance to color may help a student learn better in terms of being able to name letters and remember their colors. • 28. Strengths Of Strengths In Public Speaking My first strength in public speaking is my organization and preparation skills. I think that I am particularly skilled in creating and preparing a presentation that is straightforward and informational. I know how to effectively organize my presentation in such a manner that will appeal to my audience. In addition, I spend an ample amount of time preparing for my presentation. However, there is definitely room for improvement. I need a bit more practice in trying to make my presentations more concise. For example, I used to present to high school students on financial literacy. Initially my presentations were too long, but as my presentations progressed they were shorter while still retaining important information. I would like to hone this skill as much as I possibly can. My next strength in public speaking is my eye contact. I am able to face my audience and express positive nonverbal communication by maintaining eye contact and giving my audience my undivided attention. Interestingly enough, I feel that sometimes my eye contact can be too excessive in the sense that I look around too much. I was told of this by one of my friends while I did a presentation on the civil rights movement. I can strive to improve this strength by learning how to hold eye contact longer with certain individuals as opposed to constantly looking around. This may be a bit uncomfortable to me, but I intend to challenge myself to attempt it. Another strength is my voice projection. I believe that I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. The Black Of Black Criminal Labels Welch (2007) instituted her article with details of speculations and theories that coincided to the development of Black criminal labels. Now, the Black criminal labels are basically the stereotypes that black people are commonly involve or associate with regarding with crime. She thought it was a plausible concept to understand the images of crime shown by a society. She explicates on racial stereotypes through crime rates, black involvement in crimes, media, and racial hoaxes. For instance, young black males in America are commonly perceived as violent, gang affiliated, and sustain by other labels everywhere. She mentions talking about crime is talking about race which has adapted to the publics minds throughout a wide range in history (Welch, 2007; Barlow, 1998, p.151). Welch gives an example of a common white stereotype of African Americans as being less controlled, and more prone to crime than whites which adds to the public s conception of criminality (2007; Higginbotham, 2002, p.147). Through the various factors, like black involvement in crime have contributed to the criminal stereotyping of blacks. • 31. Relationship Between My Husband And Child For My Future... Relationship is defined as the way in which two or more concepts or people are connected. This means like how two people can relate with one another or generally just how the relationship works. We all know that it takes a lot to make any relationship work whether it s a marriage or even just in making friendships work. There are certain components that must be present to make it work. In addition, there s also the question of what are you willing to invest in the relationship. Personally, I have a few ideas of what I would expect in my husband and child for my future family. Communication is one of the most important aspects of making a relationship work. I want a husband who I can just talk to. I want to be able to talk about my emotions, spiritual aspects, and just about anything about my life. My number one priority however would have to be finding someone who I can be myself with. I want someone who ll understand me and my culture or at least someone who s open minded. It also helps if we have the same beliefs especially in deciding what we would teach our children or how we would raise them. Having the same beliefs would decrease the amount of arguing or compromising we have to go through. He should also have the same expectations in the relationship and the willingness to be in it. For example, when I marry someone, divorce is not an option unless the circumstances are really bad and almost unbearable. He must understand that, and he must understand my beliefs. In ... Jazz and the Blues were the most common and well known types of music, which could have sometimes been involved in the types of dancing that happened in the Roaring 20s. The type of music that we call jazz was a great turning point between the whites and the African Americans who were segregated. It lessened the amount of segregation between the two races and brought people of all races together no matter what color they were. The music helped people that were in need of jobs and the main places that were affected were New York and Chicago. An important figure in the history of jazz was Louis Armstrong who played the trumpet and cornet to play his music. Along with jazz, the blues was a type of music that was inspired by the African Americans of that time. The African Americans that started the blues were in churches or either in hollers working in the fields. They would sing these songs as they worked hard on the long days on the farm. It has been said that this operetta consists of racist comments and stereotyping. After thoroughly researching about The Mikado, I have come to the conclusion that The Mikado production in Seattle is offensive, due to their choice of portrayal. This operetta intended to satire the British society, not the Japanese people. In my opinion, the goal of a satire is not accomplished. The librettist merely jokes about the British politics through the eyes of Japanese people. This makes it offensive because, at that time, the Japanese were killed and driven out in the 1800s. What was accepted then does not justify its perpetuation today. People should not be insensitive to the dangers of stereotyping in public as they can cause damage that a lot of people are unaware of (Northwestern Asian Weekly, 2014). To being with, the Seattle production of this operetta hired white actors to play Japanese people. It was entirely comprised of white actors who are transformed into Japanese characters with the help of makeup. Where did all the Asian actors go? What made Gilbert want to utilize white actors? The white actors dressed up to depict Japanese people is unfair because they are portrayed as archaic, and is not even relevant to this time.
