Ambiguity In Henry James s Turn Of The Screw
Henry James constructs an epic novel of romance and mystery, engendering many interpretations of
Turn of the Screw. James intentionally creates ambiguity by utilizing an incomplete frame to introduce
the atmosphere of a ghost story through its diction, setting, and tone, in order to capture an active
reader who must interact with the text. Frames hold a distinct purpose to provide insight and
background to the coming story, which James succeeds in, but goes one step farther. James introduces
the obvious ambiguity in the prologue through its point of view in order to establish a participating
reader to make judgements on their own from the very beginning.
James introduces the atmosphere of a ghost story by consisting the frame of multiple tales being told
out of competition at the third person point of view, which then allows the reader to experience the
mood and perspective of a spectator rather than a teller. In the opening sentence, the narrator touches
on the fact that it was a common tradition to exchange ghost stories on Christmas Eve by saying they
were not sufficiently breathless out of horror, but because it was respectfully a favorable story. As
well, there are other motivations for tales being told other than it being a tradition, which happens to
be competition (Williams 49). Douglas exemplifies this when asking the reader and the surrounding
characters, but it s not the first occurrence of its charming kind that I know to have involved a child. If

Essay On Traditional Construction Of History
The Issuses of Traditional Construction of History Does history over centuries truly define the past as
its origin? Dr. Francis Pryor re examines the origin of Britain in one of his series about Britain AD,
Britain AD The Not So Dark Age. His reinvestigation finds out a handful of evidences that disprove
the written history regarding how Britain s culture was formed. Pryor effectively explores the flaw in
history through the idea of invasion, cultural artifacts, and the creation of identity. In the narrative, the
idea of Anglo Saxon invasion is clearly not reliable. To begin with, there are a plenty of Rome
buildings that might have a different purpose than people traditionally believe in. To illustrate, Pryor
has a discussion with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beside the invasion, cultural artifacts is also an aspect that is misjudged towards people s genesis.
Firstly, cultural artifacts are merely shown the adaption to what is better, rather than expression of one
s origin. For example, Pryor has a conversation with Sam Lucy, an archaeologist, about the change in
burial rights in Britain during the end of The Roman period; Lucy mentions how people were buried
with different objects: a cross shaped branch, and this approach isn t a continental import. It s idea
came ultimately from the continent, but it is a British product (Sam Lucy). This reveals that the idea of
the object comes from outside of Britain, but British people are the one who modify and execute that
idea. The fact that British takes the ideas from continent to differ their style proves that artifacts are
found to belong to Anglo Saxon people could actually be made similarly by the British to improve
their daily life. So this idea indicates that culture artifacts do not tell where people come from.
Moreoever, cultural artifacts are found around the world might have been traded and transported there,
and did not belong to local inhibitants. Particularly, Mark Cartwright, who has a Master of Arts in
Greek philosophy, talks about trading goods in ancient times: goods were not only exchanged across
the Roman world, however, as bustling ports such as Gades, Ostia, Puteoli, Alexandria, and Antioch
also imported goods from such far flung places as Arabia,

Suffering In Dante Alighieri s Inferno
Dante Alighieri s Inferno is a work of literature with many gruesome and intense scenes that leave a
significant impact on its audience. In Dante Alighieri s imagining of Hell, sinners are severely
punished at different degrees depending on the sins they committed while they were alive. Through all
of the intense parts of this story, what stood out the most to me was when the characters ventured into
the Ninth Bolgia of the Eighth Circle of Hell. Canto XXVIII of Inferno is rather harsh to read due to
the goriness of what is happening to the sinners in this part of the story. As Dante and Virgil make
their way down into the Inferno, their experiences continually grow in intensity. When they reach the
Eighth Circle of Hell, they are among the sinners who are suffering due to their fraudulence. In the
Ninth Bolgia they find the Sowers of Discord , who are punished for causing conflict between people
and ruining kinship, communities, and religion. For this, they are slashed open by a devil ... Show

Sowers of discord do not seem like they should be so far down into the Inferno. It s fairly surprising to
see these people being mutilated and suffering in the second to last circle while murderers reside in a
circle above them. In the Seventh Circle there are great warmakers and tyrants such as Alexander the
Great, who wreaked havoc on entire countries for years and killed numerous people, affecting and
ruining so many lives. Meanwhile in the Eighth Circle we see people such as Mohamet, who was a
prophet and messenger to God, and Bertrand de Born, who set the young king on to mutiny,/ son
against father, father against son, (231; 135 136). Merely wronging two people does not seem to
compare to killing people. Orchestrating disagreements doesn t seem like such an intolerable misdeed,
which is why this scene shocked me so

6. What is ethical behaviour? Describe an ethical dilemma you may face in the role of a child care
assistant. What would your thoughts and actions be in this dilemma?
Ethical behaviour is behaving appropriate and respecting the dignity, diversity and rights of
individuals. Caring for children can be complex is some professional situations, as you can find
yourself trying to meet the specific needs of a parent that do not agree with the child.
Ethical dilemma:
Jane has a one year old named Melissa. Melissa has a strict organic diet. Jane brings food from home
for Melissa and the food is prepared by the cook before lunch time. This is routine that has occurred
for about two weeks. Melissa has no allergies, but her mother is very particular about Melissa s diet.
On a particularly busy day, Chelsea the room leader has requested the babies to be placed in their high
chairs to get ready for lunch. Chelsea forgets to inform the new staff member Jess, of Melissa s
organic diet and Melissa consumes a serving of the others babies regular food.
As Chelsea is the room leader she will have to speak to Melissa s mother and inform her of the day s
events. Behaving ethically would be to tell the whole truth about what happened, making sure Melissa
s mother was completely aware of what Melissa ate. Although it was an accident and although Chelsea
can ensure it won t happen again, Jane would need to know everything.

Aids in the Bahamas
AIDS in Bahamians, ages 15 44
A major cause of death of Bahamians in the age group 15 to 44 is AIDS. This is a result of unprotected
sex, ignorance and the reluctancy to get tested and treated. Many Bahamians engage in sexual
intercourse without the use of contraceptives. Ignorant to the dangers of AIDS, they believe that
nothing will happen. When and if there is a slight belief that one is infected with AIDS, Bahamians
tend to hesitate to get tested or treated because of appearances. However, as research, investment and
commitment into understanding HIV and AIDS increased, so the outcome of people living with HIV
improved around the world ( AVERTing HIV AIDS ). With innovative and private methods many

Moreover, 93% of females can transmit the AIDS virus to males during unprotected sex. Furthermore,
94% of the combined sample recognized that the AIDS virus can be transmitted through heterosexual
relations. In addition, Rodgers and Rolle state that only 32% of the sexually active combined sample
ensured that they always used condoms during sex. This means that 68% of the sexually active
adolescents in this survey are conducting in unprotected sex which can very well, lead to AIDS. It is
evident that in this age group, these is reckless and irresponsible engagement in sexual activity which
has led to the dangerous AIDS epidemic. After interviewing Ms. Sandra Smith, age 21, it was found
that she was a prime example of a young Bahamian engaging in reckless unprotected sex adding to the
AIDS epidemic. Ms. Smith said, I was 20 when I found out I had AIDS. I have about six serious
partners before I got tested. I had sex with them all without using protection . When Ms. Smith was
asked why she did not use a condom she responded by saying, I really do not know why I did not use
a condom. I guess it was all in the heat of the moment. It was all fun, at the time ! Ms. Smith ended
the interview by saying that, I regret doing what I did, my stupid actions, not using protection. It is the
reason that I have AIDS. I am not proud of my actions but it is the truth. I have AIDS and I will
probably live a short life because I had unprotected sex .

Long Term Causes Of The Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War was a war that fought between the Nationalists and the Republicans. Although
this war was relatively short lasting from 1936 to 1939, there were many long term causes leading up
to this event. Some of the long term causes were the Spanish American War, the church and the army,
and failed dictatorships. One of the biggest long term reasons was the Spanish American War because
prior to this war, Spain was one of the richest and most powerful nations in the world (Grabowski 37).
However, this led to Spain s fatal mistake of buying all their necessities instead of producing it. As a
result, Spain was left behind in terms of industrialism and stayed as a rural country instead of an
industrial one (Payne 46). This became a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the time before the events leading up to the Spanish Civil War, there was a variety of political ideas
and beliefs in the government. However, as the civil war approached, only two political ideologies
became relevant. The left wing party members supported democracy and the Second Spanish Republic
while the right wing party members supported fascism, more specifically falangism. These fascist
were called Nationalists and the left wing party members were called Loyalists or Republicans.
However, the Nationalists viewed the Republicans as Reds and the Republicans viewed the
Nationalists as traitors to Spain (Grabowski 34). The Republicans supported a wide range of ideas
from liberal democracy to anarchy. The Nationalists supported anti clericalism and anti communism.
They wanted to keep Spain united and feared separatism. These differences in ideologies were a major
reason leading to the

Causes And Failures Of Hurricane Katrina
Katrina Failures
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, multiple failures exposed communication breakdowns, roles and
responsibilities. Civil unrest followed after local law enforcement, abandoned their legal duties.
Historically, the Posse Comitatus Act created barriers. These barriers slowed down the response of
federal support. The President and governor struggled over control of the National Guard. The city of
New Orleans suffered economically and through loss of life. With the pullout of the police, they fell
into a different category that called for implantation of martial law using an outside policing force.
The actions of Governor Blanco are ill prepared at most. Post Katrina in Louisiana was painfully
obvious as the total failure of state and federal government s anger looms towards the revision of an
outdated law.
Actions
The Posse Comitatus Act says that Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly
authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force

The Importance Of Water In Michigan
Living around the Great Lakes like we do in Michigan brings a lot of advantages. We have a great
amount of water, unlike much of the United States. Water has shaped Michigan to its shape over the
past thousands of years. The total area of Michigan is 96,716 miles squared. The total surface of the
Great Lakes is 94,250 miles squared. Michigan is surrounded by 4 of the 5 Great Lakes like shown in
figure 1. The Great Lakes include Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie. Water
has shaped Michigan to the shape it is by many different ways. Erosion, transportation, deposition,
glaciers, and manmade causes.

It takes all of them to change the land to where it was thousands of years ago. It is still changing today,
and will continue to change for as long as we can imagine. The causes range from human causes to
natural causes. The beautiful state of Michigan is a prime example of how water has shaped us to what
we are now. We take for granted the beautiful Great Lakes we have. We need to conserve what we

The Components Of The Gas Suspension Preheater
The key component of the gas suspension preheater is the cyclone. A cyclone is a conical vessel into
which a dust bearing gas stream is passed tangentially. This produces a vortex within the vessel. The
gas leaves the vessel through a co axial vortex finder . The solids are thrown to the outside edge of the
vessel by centrifugal action, and leave through a valve in the vertex of the cone.
Cyclones were originally used to clean up the dust laden gases leaving simple dry process kilns. If,
instead, the entire feed of rawmix is encouraged to pass through the cyclone, it is found that a very
efficient heat exchange takes place: the gas is efficiently cooled, hence producing less waste of heat to
the atmosphere, and the rawmix is efficiently heated. This efficiency is further increased if a number
of cyclones are connected in series
The number of cyclones stages used in practice varies from 1 to 6. Energy, in the form of fan power, is
required to draw the gases through the string of cyclones, and at a string of 6 cyclones, the cost of the
added fan power needed for an extra cyclone exceeds the efficiency advantage gained.
ROTARY KILN :THE HEART OF CEMENT MANUFACTURING
The kiln is a cylindrical vessel, inclined slightly to the horizontal, which is rotated slowly about its
axis. The material to be processed is fed into the upper end of the cylinder. As the kiln rotates, material
gradually moves down towards the lower end, and may undergo a certain amount of stirring

Arthur Black Essay
Arthur Black is a very opinionated man. In his essays about Canada, he has many short pieces about
the differences between Canadians and Americans. He states how there is never anything bad said
about Canada, and that Canada could even be considered a wallflower . In his essay Canadian Passion
Not Flagging, Black talks about how the Americans wave their flag and Canadians do not. Americans
have their flag everywhere; hanging inside malls, and even at the gas stations. In his essay Canada:
Too Polite to Live, it says how the American Declaration of Independence demands life, liberty, and
the pursuit of happiness. Canadians have settled for peace, order, and good government. Another

Also, to be Canadian, it is almost a must to have an interest in hockey. Hockey is the one sport Canada
can safely say they are the best at. People from Canada know a different level of cold than places like
the USA. In the article A Samaritan with Jumper Cables, Black says how this aint a country; this is
winter. Also in that article, he tells some stories about how polite and kind people from Canada are
and how if the car spun off the road or ran out of gas, Canadians would be there to help right away.
Arthur Black s main classification of Canada is polite, and that is most likely the rest of the world s
opinion also.
Your Canada Winter in Canada is much different than winter in other countries. For one, it is much
longer. Winter lasts about six to eight months, and it can be unbearably cold. The days are
significantly shorter than summer, which makes it that much harder to wake up for the day at school
or at work. Having to shovel the driveway isn t Canadians favorite pastime at seven in the morning
when they are going to be late for work. Also what needs to be taken into account is making sure the
car is plugged in during the night. When that is forgotten in the cold days of winter, it is pretty hard to
get anywhere because no car would start if it was sitting outside. The season of winter in Canada isn t
all bad though, it is very pretty at times. Waking up and looking out the window to a fresh blanket of

proposed changes to the NFIP also present improvements to flood mapping practices and addresses
the issue of high risk properties, which owners rebuild at high costs following a flood (Simpson,

According to Jeb Hensarling, Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, if the 21st
Century Flood Reform Act became law, taxpayers would directly benefit through the competition of
private companies to provide affordable flood insurance rates for homeowners. Republican Sean P.
Duffy, the sponsor of the bill, spoke on the House floor and reinforced Hensarling s statement. Duffy
claimed that introducing private companies would allow homeowners to select alternative flood
insurance plans that may be cheaper than any available federal plans. Additionally, Duffy stated that
private flood insurance companies would assist taxpayers in covering the costs resulting from a flood.
Duffy concluded by not only stating that the 21st Century Flood Reform Act is a bipartisan bill but
also reiterated its benefit to homeowners, and that it would directly contribute to reducing the national
debt. The bill has also received support from the American Academy of Actuaries Casualty Practice
Council, as well as from environmental groups, under the condition that it would undergo additional
reforms in the Senate, such as to address flood mitigation and the financial

Could you imagine working 80 plus hours a week and only earning around $26,000 in salary per year
as a flat rate, but there s a catch. The average enlisted soldier with four years or less of service makes
roughly $2300 a month and that s with 65 hours plus a week. An average day consists from working
from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM or later with no say in the matter. $27,600 a year before taxes before paying

the physical or emotional cost, even with the risk of ones life. Congress should enact a law increasing

The Fraud Triangle Consists Of Three Different Parts
In life, there are many times someone sees an opportunity that can better a situation in their life.
Whether morally right or wrong some still take the action to better their life even if it can potentially
be considered fraud. People tend to find ways to look past their morals. These situations can be
something so small as not splitting the tips at your job evenly, fixing an old gambling debt, even
cheating on your taxes. Some even take it as far as creating a fake business to receive money from
people or steal money coming into an already existent company. These opportunities are everywhere
we look. There are not many people in the world who would give up an opportunity to better a
situation in their life. The question is just how far are they willing to go and for what are they
receiving in the end. Most of these situations, if not all can be analyzed through the fraud triangle. The
fraud triangle consists of three different parts. The first part would be the perceived financial need or
the pressure upon the person. This could be caused by the person situation where they may be in need,
or possibly someone in their life pushing them to do the act. It could also be something as simple as a
want that they feel they should go after no matter what it takes or the cost. This will lead into step two
of the fraud triangle which is perceived opportunity or, in other words, the opportunity to commit the
fraud. This is what they do to actually do the crime. How they go about

Bartleby The Scavenger, By Zora Neale Hurston
Every literature has a new story to tell, but every story starts with a person who goes on an adventure.
An adventure can lead to many different places and have a variety of themes and meanings. Because
there are many directions a literature can lead in, it grabs the attention of many readers. Since
everyone looks at situations in a unique way, readers analyze literature differently and develop their
own ideas. While reading, people will start to relate to the characters and their experiences to
themselves and their life. Some of the greatest literary characters are Bartleby from Bartleby the
Scavenger, by Herman Melville; Delia from Sweat, by Zora Neale Hurston; Hamlet from Hamlet,
Prince of Denmark, by William Shakespeare; and Dagny from Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand. These
characters come from different literatures and each of them have a unique set of traits and
characteristics. Bartleby is a man who had a great work ethic and was hired because his boss thought
the other workers would look up to him and therefore become more successful workers. He was fast
and didn t take any breaks. He was dependable. According to Herman Melville, the author of Bartleby
the Scavenger, ¨At first Bartleby did an extraordinary quantity of writing. As if long famishing for

The Importance Of Being Successful As A Student
What is considered to have the key to success? Quoted by Charlie White The most important thing is
being passionate about what you re doing and always give it your all. That is the key to success. All
students have had the over whelming amount of stress to be successful. Stressing to get the perfect
score on a major grade or finding the determination to do a challenging assignment. We wonder if all
of our routines and tips used for school work actually guarantee our success as a student. As it may
only help somewhat and not give us the result we desire. Our mindset and amount of work provided
guarantees our success. Being successful as a student requires determination, preparing for situations
you will encounter as a student, and stopping procrastination in its tracks.
First off, as a successful student you need to have a positive outlook on each situation you are given.
To succeed by trying your best is a part of determination. As students if we don t have any
determination than what do we have left to get any work completed? We have to have motivation to
get through doing any type of work provided. If we don t get any work done it means, we have
incomplete the task given which is not being successful or putting in your 100% effort. Being
determined requires getting task done efficiently and accomplishing goals. A real life situation of this
can be found everywhere and in everything you do. Determination can be found in school, work, or in
everyday activities you

came from a distant land along with a prince who had brought them to the land. The prince later on
had returned to his native land and returned back. When the prince had returned, he saw that all his
people had intermarried with the natives. He had asked his people to return with him, but they had all
refused to return and no longer saw him as their leader. He had then returned to his homeland, and
ever since Moctezuma had always heard that the prince s force would attempt to conquer the land.
When Moctezuma came face to face with Cortez, he told Cortez that his arrival was very welcome in
their land. He said that Cortez had come to satisfy his

St. Thomas Aquinas On The Existence Of God
St. Thomas Aquinas is considered to be one of the greatest minds of the western world as well as one
of the greatest theologians. In his work Summa Theologica, which he revised many times over the
course of his life, he explored the existence of God, and there are essentially five ways in which St.
Thomas Aquinas argues the existence of God. The first way is the argument from change, the second
way is the argument from causation, the third argument is the argument from possibility and necessity,
or the reductio argument, the fourth way is the argument from gradation of being, and the fifth way is
the argument from harmony. These arguments for the existence of God are presented in his work
Summa Theologica. In regards to the first argument, Aquinas states that our senses prove that things
are in motion. From there, potential motion becomes actual motion, and this actual motion can turn
potential motion into actual motion. The example Aquinas uses is, Thus that which is actually hot, as
fire, makes wood, which is potentially hot, to be actually hot, and thereby moves and changes it.
Because of these arguments made by Aquinas, he says that nothing can be moved by itself because if
something is both in actuality and potentially at the same time, then they have to be actual in one way
but potential in a different way. Additionally, going back to the wood example, For what is actually
hot cannot simultaneously be potentially hot; but it is simultaneously potentially cold.

Edward Abbey And Wasteland And An Elegy
Kindred and Coexisting
As humans began to develop, the need to expand increased. Some of this increase causes nature to be
destroyed on the very foundation in which the new buildings and complexes are built. In the two
pieces of writing, The Serpents of Paradise by Edward Abbey and Wasteland: An Elegy by Mary
Oliver, the authors examine their own personal experiences with nature. In order to show that humans
should respect and are connected to nature, the authors narrate their story in first person, but choose
different approaches to aspects such as tone and the use of pathos.
In The Serpents of Paradise, Edward Abbey uses a subtle and relaxed tone until the end of the excerpt,
when his tone becomes critical of people s views on animals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In order to keep the rattlesnakes away without killing them, the author captures a gopher snake. He
releases this snake inside his house and feels attached to the snake when it says, We are compatible.
From my point of view friends (Abbey). The author shows that animals considered to be scary can be
friend and not foe. By releasing a snake in his house, the author portrays the narrator s trusting view of
nature. Edward Abbey also touches on pathos by creating a sense of fulfillment, even though the snake
who the author has become so accustomed to has left. The snakes leave for second time and it says, I
will not see the gopher snakes again. Nevertheless, I will feel their presence watching over me like
totemic deities (Abbey). The author causes the reader to feel sad about the snakes leaving, but it helps
to lead to his next point. He transitions from a relaxed tone to one of judgement of others when it says,
I suggest, however, that it s a foolish, simple minded rationalism which denies any form of emotion to
all animals but man and his dog (Abbey). By saying this, he points out that many people only care
about their pet dogs, rather than the many other living species. The author also tries to portray his
view of the value of life by saying that We are obliged, therefore, to spread the news, painful and bitter
as it may be for some to hear, that all living things on earth are

Policy Of Appeasement Research Paper
Evaluate the success of the policy of appeasement as followed by both Britain and France.
When Neville Chamberlain became British Prime Minister in 1937, a policy of appeasement had
already begun, Chamberlain adapted it as his own policy He would find out what Hitler wanted and
show him that reasonable claims could be met by negotiation rather than by force (Lowe). The policy
of appeasement s success is debatable. Although it can be accountable for contributing to World War
Two, it did delay a possible war that the Allied powers were not prepared for. It is only with hindsight
that it can be said that appeasement was unsuccessful as it was purely justifiable at the time.
On the 16th of March Hitler made the announcement of German rearmament. ... Show more content

In adapting the policy Hitler gained confidence, in that his goal for Lebensraum would be reached
without great conflict. When nothing was done when Hitler announced rearmament of Nazi Germany
it opened the way for complete rearmament in preparation for War. Appeasement allowed for Hitler to
begin his plans leading up for World War Two giving him an advantage. In the time the policy of
appeasement was active Hitler had achieved rearmament, re occupation of the Rhineland, gaining
allies with Mussolini and General Franco who all had simular ideologies. Hitler had also gained the
Sudentland. Hitler and Nazi Germany gained all this with little resistance. It was when Hitler invaded
the rest of Czechoslovakia and threatened the invasion of Poland that appeasement ended and war
begun. Although this is only with Hindsight it would have been impossible to predict Hitler s future
moves.
It is widely recognised that the policy of appeasement was a success in delaying a possible war
between the Allies and the Axis powers. It was obvious that the Allies were not ready to fight a war,
both Britain and France were still facing economic and psychological problems from World War One.
The policy of appeasement gave Europe a fake peace while giving time for Britain and France to
rearm themselves and prepare for a possible war. The policy of appeasement was a success in the
sense it avoided a war that could have started earlier and gave the Allies much needed time to rearm

The Hatchet Character Analysis
If I could change the life of a story character to make it more like Zane s, I would change Brian s from
The Hatchet. I would change his life by putting him in Zane s situation (even though it is not positive).
In The Hatchet, Brian is going on a trip to see his father (who was divorced with his mother) in the
North Canadian woods. He was going in a two seater plane. While in the air, the pilot had a fatal heart
attack. The plane crashed into a lake, with Brian still in it. Brian was forced to fend for himself in the
harsh woods for a couple of months with nothing but a hatchet (hence the title of the book). When a
rescue force finally saved him, he had already suffered a tornado, getting rammed by a moose, and

Alice Munro s The Amber Of The Moment
Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why (Vonnegut 76 77). There are
notable depictions of a sense of entrapment among protagonists in works such as Alice Munro s
Dimension and Train. In these short stories, the central characters, Doree and Jackson suffer from a
sensation of feeling trapped, due to their life experiences, which ultimately leads them becoming
motivated to go onto the next chapter of their lives. There are overlapping themes and writing styles in
each story, therefore accentuating the similarities between the experiences of Doree and Jackson, and
bring the two stories closely together, evoking strong emotions and pathos within the reader.
Thematically, Munro shows parallel ones in both Dimension and Train, with the most prominent ones
being isolation, and relationships with family members and its affiliation with sexuality and gender.
Munro s writing style rings identical in both stories as well, as each one incorporates the use of
flashbacks, once again implementing a way to compare the characters, as the flashbacks provide
explanations for being emotionally confined. Lastly, a prominent technique used is the way in which
each story ends abruptly, stimulating a response in the reader of wanting more to the story, as the
endings both foreshadow a start to a new life, although Doree breaks free whereas Jackson seemingly
follows his cycle as a result from feeling trapped. Isolation is a theme that is largely present in both

Lucy Grealy s Autobiography Of A Face
Having the attitude and mental disposition of a child is something heavily mentioned in media. People
crave to see the world with a youthful eye, being able to find joy and laughter in the worst of
situations. This view of a child is shown in Lucy Grealy s book Autobiography of a Face. In the
following passage, Lucy describes getting her medical results back as a child and her reaction to her
results. I told them I had a malignancy. My mother said I seemed rather happy about it, and my
teachers were shocked by my attitude. I told my teacher and all of my friends, probably with pride: I
had a malignancy. I was going to have a big operation now (Grealy 43). Her reaction is much
difference than when an adult receives news of a disease. Most grown adults would begin to think of
death, and how their mortality will affect their loved ones. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Lucy did not see it this way. She was excited and wanted to share about her new adventure.
Later in the passage, she mentions that as an adolescent she finally realized that she had cancer. This is
baffling to think of as an adult, who stresses about every term and ailment that they have. Perhaps,
adults should adopt a childlike mentality to life and view life with its hardships as an adventure.
Emerson discusses this idea as well is his essay, Nature. The sun illuminates only the eye of the man,
but shines into the eye and the heart of the child. The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward
senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has retained the spirt of infancy even into the era of
manhood (Emerson 183). This lover of nature, has reclaimed that childhood innocence. This thought
brings up some valid questions. If one is to have a childlike view on life, are they choosing to

Google s PageRank
Introduction
Google is the most popular search engine used everywhere in the world. The significance of the
internet in globalization and digitalization of the business industry has seen Google search engine
become the most significant utility. To critically understand how Google operates its search service to
the excellent service provision platform it is, this analytical report will explore Google PageRank as
the building block of the search engine. By definition, PageRank (PR) is an algorithm that establishes
a ranking order for search results. The main objective of this report is to learn the basics of web
searching as well as the page rank ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another factor that makes this algorithm important is how companies can potentially use it to improve
their marketing processes. Basically, an understanding of how the Google search engine ranks
websites and how this ranking system impacts the outcome of search results is essential to
strategically positioning websites for greater audience. In other words, companies strive at best to
maximize their PageRank score as a strategy for marketing itself. According to Amy and Carl (2004),
PageRank has numerous connections to areas of mathematics and computer science including matrix
theory, numerical analysis, information retrieval and graph theory. The mathematical context of this
concept is that PageRank score of a webpage masks the probability that a random web surfer will
choose to view a specific webpage. This analysis therefore sets out to explore the application of
mathematical concepts in the functionality of the algorithm through examples. In general, a PageRank
is a numerical value that represents the significance of a webpage in the internet in relation to a
specific search.
PageRank Algorithm
Following the initial conceptualization of the PageRank algorithm by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the
PageRank algorithm can be represented as;

Yeats And The Salley Garden Essay
They (the great writers) were national first ... and it was the intensity of their own nationalism which
made them international. (Power 65) As Maud Gonne said without Yeats there would have been no
Literary Revival in Ireland. Without the inspiration of that revival and glorification of beauty and
heroic virtue I doubt there would have been an Easter week (24). Yeats was born in 1865 near Dublin
in Ireland and through his literary work contributed in the cultural nationalism of Ireland. He imagined
an Ireland that took shape as modern Ireland. He tried to unify the nation by substituting religious
beliefs of the sectarian and class loyalties with the nationalistic sentiment. He tried to define the
importance of love and death in nationalism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yeats edited by John P. Frayne. To define Irish literature, the first article begins thus:
Some of my countrymen include among (sic) national writers born in Ireland but I prefer, though it
greatly takes from the importance of our literature, to include and of Irish subjects, when once a
country was given perfect expression to itself in literature, has carried to maturity its literary tradition,
its writers, no matter what they write of, carry its influence with them, just as Carlyle remained a
Scotsman when he wrote of German kings or French, and Shakespeare an Elizabethan Englishman
when he told of Coriolanus or Cressida. (Frayne 360) In his youth he excluded Swift, Sterne, Burke
and Berkeley from his list of Irish tradition but afterward he declared them as his predecessors. He
favoured genuine literature but was against any kind of propaganda. He excluded Thomas Moore,
Thomas Davis and John Mitchel inspite of the presence of nationalism in their poetry because they
used English method in their poetry and did not contributed in enriching Irish literary tradition. He
praised Callanan for developing a new kind of verse with its source from the Irish tradition. The poets
who contributed in enriching Irish tradition were Aubrey De Vere, William Allingham, Clarence
Mangan and Sir Samuel

Gender Dilance And Imbalance In Virginia Woolf s The Waves
First of all I will start by saying that in this essay I will respond and discuss the gender balance or
imbalance in Virginia Woolf s The Waves. Virginia Woolf was and still is one of the foremost
modernists of the twentieth century. Today in my opinion she is seen as a true and impeccable writer
in regarding the description of women in the Victorian era. The Victorian age, as a patriarchal society,
marginalized and basically destroyed women s position. In Virginia Woolf s The Waves we can see
this difference between man and woman but surprisingly not always. In fact I believe the Victorian era
was like a time of stagnation for women. We have six main characters in The Waves, three are females
and three are males: Susan, Rhoda, Jinny and Bernard, Louis and Neville. Here we have a balance
between genders. Three women and three men but all of them are different from each other and
basically they are three types of Victorian women and men, each taking their one path in life. Rhoda is
dreamy and quiet, withdrawn so much from the reality of the world the other live in. She is in my
words in another world . She is always trying to not be noticed to never be seen by anyone and yet she
finds a romantic interest in one of our male characters in the novel, Louis. ... Show more content on

both of them were introverts and preferred to be left alone. We have a point of normality between
genders. They are the same and so they should be in love. I could agree with this but reality is cruel
and the end is tragic. The difference between Louis and Rhoda or male and female is that the man had
more opportunities and much more support and opportunities in everything at that time; career,
money, education. There is definitely an imbalance between genders in this

Reduced Visual Acuity Summary
Summary
Reduced visual acuity can be addressed through a range of options, including: familiarizing the
student with their task and environment moving the student closer to the object(s) and vice versa,
increasing contrast between the object(s) and background, appropriate lighting, and having an
organized environment with contrasting color to highlight areas like stairs and doorways
For students with reduced visual acuity, use of corrective lenses; sunglasses with photogrey lenses;

For students with peripheral visual field loss, use of a long cane can help identify edges of an object
and/or utilizing sun wear or preferential seating to reduce glare and enhance acuity
Cortical (cerebral) visual impairment can be addressed through: having an environment that is visually
simplified and well organized, with visual cues to denote sections of the room; presenting visual
information to a student slowly, while allowing adequate response time for visual processing and
integration of information using more than one sense, such as smell or touch; using objects that

She writes in a sorry tone when describing moments of betrayal and family problems. When writing
about the childhood of the twins, she sounds happier because of their innocence. An example of irony
is that Comrade Pillai is a communist but does not want Velutha to join the revolution just because he
is an untouchable. A revolutionary leader would want all the support he can get, but because Velutha is
inferior, he does not accept him.
Setting amp; Location: The book is mainly set in Ayemenem, India during the 1960s. Most of the plot
occurs in the Ayemenem House, which is also the Paradise Pickles amp; Preserves factory they own.
Another setting includes the movie theatre called Abhilash Talkies in the city of Kerala when the
family goes to watch The Sound of Music. Another setting is in the airport when the family picks up
Sophie Mol and Margaret Kochamma.
Writer s Style: Arundhati Roy s style is very different from others. She writes with great detail and
incorporates deep imagery. She writes in flashbacks to show how the twins childhoods still affect them
as adults. She begins with the family s lives when they are older, and go back to when the twins were
children. This helps readers know what happens to the family before finding out about the events that
occur in between.
Symbols: Pappachi s moth symbolizes fear. It is first mentioned in chapter 2 when Pappachi discovers
a new moth species, but does not claim that he discovered it.

Contributions In Bryan Sykes s The Seven Daughters Of Eve
Nearly everyone feels some desire to learn about their past and the origin of their ancestors. In Bryan
Sykes novel, The Seven Daughters of Eve, he takes his readers through the experiences he faced and
obstacles he overcame while piecing together the ancestral past of Europe. Ninety five percent of
living native Europeans can trace their past back to one of seven women, whom Sykes named Ursula,
Xenia, Helena, Velda, Tara, Katrine and Jasmine. He discovered these clan mothers by studying the
mutations found in the control region of mitochondrial DNA. People who had the same or very similar
mitochondrial DNA sequences were grouped together and in the end Sykes was left with seven
groups. The purpose and benefit of comparing mitochondrial DNA is that every person receives their
mitochondrial DNA from their mother. While recombination shuffles and changes the genes in
chromosomes, mitochondrial only changes through mutation, making it a reliable source for genetic
study. With mitochondrial DNA by his side, Sykes began to look for answers to some of the world s
greatests questions concerning ancestral origin and human colonization throughout the world.
Fortunately, Sykes scientific discoveries have benefited society as a whole in many ways. First of all,
Sykes research dismisses the existence of races. Instead of categorizing and grouping people by color,
origin or culture, he looks at the shared genetic information among people and links them to one
another accordingly. The

Character Analysis Of Eleanor Catton s The Luminaries
In 1866, many people had dreams to make fortunes from the gold rushes around the world. The main
character in The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton follows this same dream. The story follows Walter
Moody on his adventure at a place called Hokitika with a common dream; to become a rich gold
miner. Upon his arrival, he is immediately introduced to an investigation of a mysterious crime. With
this knowledge, Moody has to follow the speculated ideas of the town members to try to piece

out of the mines in the town Hokitika. Upon his arrival he finds himself in the middle of a group of
people trying to piece together the incident that had occurred on the night of the 14th of January.
Moody does not trust this room of people. This is seen as he holds simple information from them, like
he did with a man named Balfour who was trying to find out what issues he was facing. He would

Maus Elements
Art Spiegelman s Maus is a famous, Pulitzer Prize winning tale about the journey of a Jewish
Holocaust survivor. Despite the amount of similar storylines, Spiegelman s creativity with the normal
elements of comics has won him high praise. This analysis will focus on Spiegelman s unique twist on
icons, layouts, diegesis, abstraction, and encapsulation as displayed by Maus. Icons are pictures that
are used to embody a person, place, thing, or idea. McCloud hammers this concept home by drawing
random things, such as a cow (McCloud, pg. 26), but reminds the reader that it is technically not a real
cow. It is just an image.

Additionally, by including less detail, Spiegelman makes his characters easier to relate to, or as
McCloud references, more universal. After Vladek recalls the hanging of a few of his associates,
Spiegelman illustrates a very plain, bleak image of him mourning their loss in present day. The image
consists of the most basic character features, making it effortless for the reader to mentally input their
face on Vladek s. Overall, this amplification through simplification (McCloud), aids the reader in
feeling the emotion of the character, finding a deeper connection to the story as a whole, and can
reveal universal truths. The layout of a comic is the relationship between one panel to the rest of the
panels in the sequence, the page, and the rest of the book. Spiegelman constructs the layout of his
panels to bring his story to life. When Vladek is telling the story about the mandatory registration of
all Jews, which led to the disappearance of many close friends (pg. 91), Spiegelman places Vladek at
the bottom right hand corner of the page. This establishes the imagery of the boxes weighing down on
him in present time, as he appears to be struggling to get through the story and contain his emotions.

Case Study Toxic Waste Business Essay
Assignment 1 LGST 369 Case Study A amp; B Victoria Esposito 3088325 Case Study A 50 % Stan is
thinking about starting a toxic waste disposal business. He plans to collect the waste from businesses
that produce it and then dispose of it in a sanitary landfill. In order to start this business, Stan will need
a substantial amount of money to buy and develop the landfill site and purchase five trucks capable of
transporting toxic waste. Stan should have concerns about operating this business as a sole
proprietorship, a sole proprietorship exists when a person carries on a business on their own, without
adopting any other form ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though there are also many advantages of a sole proprietorship, there are other alternative forms
of business organizations that I would recommend, such as a general partnership. A general
partnership is a form of business organization that comes into existence when two or more persons
carry on business together with a view to a profit. In order to form a general partnership, a series of
criteria must be met and understood such as; the partnership must register its name and obtain a
business license, a partner cannot be employed by the partnership, all benefits of the partnership
business must be received by the partners directly, all partners are personally liable for all the
obligations of the business. There are many reasons why I would recommend a general partnership for
Stan, rather than a sole proprietorship. The first reason is because there is an option of a limited
liability partnership, which means that individual partners are not personally liable for the professional
negligence of their partners and some other obligations if certain requirements are met. Another reason
why I would recommend a general partnership is because the partner legislation in each jurisdiction
provides default rules, which is a kind of standard form agreement for the internal organization of a
partnership that applies unless the partners agree to some other arrangement. These default rules limit
disagreement

Race in Sports Essay
There are many reasons why the number of minorities that participate is sports vary from sport to
sport. Race plays a big part in sports as well as in our society. Why is it that a group of people can
harass and abuse a young black male for raping a white female, but on the next Saturday at the big
football game cheer him on and hope that he has a great game. Over the years there have been some
great black sports players, in almost all sports. Michael Jordan, OJ Simpson, Mohamed Ali, Bo
Jackson, just to name a few. When players like these come along that are black and sort of take over a
sport, many white male sports fans say stuff like, He s black, he s faster than the white players. This
tends to be true, blacks dominate the speed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While playing in Edmonton Fuhr was awesome, he is currently in sixth place on the list of all time
wins in the NHL. Another great black player is Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames. Iginla is a
great forward who has won a scoring title in the NHL for most goals scored in a single season, and
helped the Calgary Flames win the Stanley Cup. (NHL championship) Today the NHL is trying hard
to promote diversity in their league. Before each season every player is required to attend diversity
classes, and if a player chooses to talk trash during a game and use racial comments, it will cost them
big time, with fines and suspensions. There are forty five drivers on the NASCAR Nextel Cup; every
single one of them is white. There has never been a person of color to drive a racecar in the Winston
Cup or the Nextel Cup. That s about to change, or some hope it does. NASCAR S chief operating
official George Pyne has teamed up with Magic Johnson and started a program to help encourage
minorities to try to race. There is one black driver on the NASCAR truck series and a couple in
smaller race series down south, but to this day none are on the Nextel Cup series. On the PGA tour, it
doesn t matter how fast you are, how much you can bench press, or how high you can jump, so why is
it that the tour is dominated by white golfers. In 1997 Tiger Woods won the Masters in his first
professional tournament, he also set the course record. Back in the

  • 2. Ambiguity In Henry James s Turn Of The Screw Henry James constructs an epic novel of romance and mystery, engendering many interpretations of Turn of the Screw. James intentionally creates ambiguity by utilizing an incomplete frame to introduce the atmosphere of a ghost story through its diction, setting, and tone, in order to capture an active reader who must interact with the text. Frames hold a distinct purpose to provide insight and background to the coming story, which James succeeds in, but goes one step farther. James introduces the obvious ambiguity in the prologue through its point of view in order to establish a participating reader to make judgements on their own from the very beginning. James introduces the atmosphere of a ghost story by consisting the frame of multiple tales being told out of competition at the third person point of view, which then allows the reader to experience the mood and perspective of a spectator rather than a teller. In the opening sentence, the narrator touches on the fact that it was a common tradition to exchange ghost stories on Christmas Eve by saying they were not sufficiently breathless out of horror, but because it was respectfully a favorable story. As well, there are other motivations for tales being told other than it being a tradition, which happens to be competition (Williams 49). Douglas exemplifies this when asking the reader and the surrounding characters, but it s not the first occurrence of its charming kind that I know to have involved a child. If the child ... • 3. Essay On Traditional Construction Of History The Issuses of Traditional Construction of History Does history over centuries truly define the past as its origin? Dr. Francis Pryor re examines the origin of Britain in one of his series about Britain AD, Britain AD The Not So Dark Age. His reinvestigation finds out a handful of evidences that disprove the written history regarding how Britain s culture was formed. Pryor effectively explores the flaw in history through the idea of invasion, cultural artifacts, and the creation of identity. In the narrative, the idea of Anglo Saxon invasion is clearly not reliable. To begin with, there are a plenty of Rome buildings that might have a different purpose than people traditionally believe in. To illustrate, Pryor has a discussion with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beside the invasion, cultural artifacts is also an aspect that is misjudged towards people s genesis. Firstly, cultural artifacts are merely shown the adaption to what is better, rather than expression of one s origin. For example, Pryor has a conversation with Sam Lucy, an archaeologist, about the change in burial rights in Britain during the end of The Roman period; Lucy mentions how people were buried with different objects: a cross shaped branch, and this approach isn t a continental import. It s idea came ultimately from the continent, but it is a British product (Sam Lucy). This reveals that the idea of the object comes from outside of Britain, but British people are the one who modify and execute that idea. The fact that British takes the ideas from continent to differ their style proves that artifacts are found to belong to Anglo Saxon people could actually be made similarly by the British to improve their daily life. So this idea indicates that culture artifacts do not tell where people come from. Moreoever, cultural artifacts are found around the world might have been traded and transported there, and did not belong to local inhibitants. Particularly, Mark Cartwright, who has a Master of Arts in Greek philosophy, talks about trading goods in ancient times: goods were not only exchanged across the Roman world, however, as bustling ports such as Gades, Ostia, Puteoli, Alexandria, and Antioch also imported goods from such far flung places as Arabia, ... • 4. Suffering In Dante Alighieri s Inferno Dante Alighieri s Inferno is a work of literature with many gruesome and intense scenes that leave a significant impact on its audience. In Dante Alighieri s imagining of Hell, sinners are severely punished at different degrees depending on the sins they committed while they were alive. Through all of the intense parts of this story, what stood out the most to me was when the characters ventured into the Ninth Bolgia of the Eighth Circle of Hell. Canto XXVIII of Inferno is rather harsh to read due to the goriness of what is happening to the sinners in this part of the story. As Dante and Virgil make their way down into the Inferno, their experiences continually grow in intensity. When they reach the Eighth Circle of Hell, they are among the sinners who are suffering due to their fraudulence. In the Ninth Bolgia they find the Sowers of Discord , who are punished for causing conflict between people and ruining kinship, communities, and religion. For this, they are slashed open by a devil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sowers of discord do not seem like they should be so far down into the Inferno. It s fairly surprising to see these people being mutilated and suffering in the second to last circle while murderers reside in a circle above them. In the Seventh Circle there are great warmakers and tyrants such as Alexander the Great, who wreaked havoc on entire countries for years and killed numerous people, affecting and ruining so many lives. Meanwhile in the Eighth Circle we see people such as Mohamet, who was a prophet and messenger to God, and Bertrand de Born, who set the young king on to mutiny,/ son against father, father against son, (231; 135 136). Merely wronging two people does not seem to compare to killing people. Orchestrating disagreements doesn t seem like such an intolerable misdeed, which is why this scene shocked me so ... Ignorant to the dangers of AIDS, they believe that nothing will happen. Although this war was relatively short lasting from 1936 to 1939, there were many long term causes leading up to this event. Some of the long term causes were the Spanish American War, the church and the army, and failed dictatorships. One of the biggest long term reasons was the Spanish American War because prior to this war, Spain was one of the richest and most powerful nations in the world (Grabowski 37). Civil unrest followed after local law enforcement, abandoned their legal duties. Historically, the Posse Comitatus Act created barriers. These barriers slowed down the response of federal support. The President and governor struggled over control of the National Guard. The city of New Orleans suffered economically and through loss of life. With the pullout of the police, they fell into a different category that called for implantation of martial law using an outside policing force. • 11. The Components Of The Gas Suspension Preheater The key component of the gas suspension preheater is the cyclone. A cyclone is a conical vessel into which a dust bearing gas stream is passed tangentially. This produces a vortex within the vessel. The gas leaves the vessel through a co axial vortex finder . The solids are thrown to the outside edge of the vessel by centrifugal action, and leave through a valve in the vertex of the cone. Cyclones were originally used to clean up the dust laden gases leaving simple dry process kilns. If, instead, the entire feed of rawmix is encouraged to pass through the cyclone, it is found that a very efficient heat exchange takes place: the gas is efficiently cooled, hence producing less waste of heat to the atmosphere, and the rawmix is efficiently heated. This efficiency is further increased if a number of cyclones are connected in series The number of cyclones stages used in practice varies from 1 to 6. Energy, in the form of fan power, is required to draw the gases through the string of cyclones, and at a string of 6 cyclones, the cost of the added fan power needed for an extra cyclone exceeds the efficiency advantage gained. ROTARY KILN :THE HEART OF CEMENT MANUFACTURING The kiln is a cylindrical vessel, inclined slightly to the horizontal, which is rotated slowly about its axis. The material to be processed is fed into the upper end of the cylinder. As the kiln rotates, material gradually moves down towards the lower end, and may undergo a certain amount of stirring ... Republican Sean P. Duffy, the sponsor of the bill, spoke on the House floor and reinforced Hensarling s statement. Duffy claimed that introducing private companies would allow homeowners to select alternative flood insurance plans that may be cheaper than any available federal plans. Additionally, Duffy stated that private flood insurance companies would assist taxpayers in covering the costs resulting from a flood. Duffy concluded by not only stating that the 21st Century Flood Reform Act is a bipartisan bill but also reiterated its benefit to homeowners, and that it would directly contribute to reducing the national debt. Whether morally right or wrong some still take the action to better their life even if it can potentially be considered fraud. People tend to find ways to look past their morals. These situations can be something so small as not splitting the tips at your job evenly, fixing an old gambling debt, even cheating on your taxes. Some even take it as far as creating a fake business to receive money from people or steal money coming into an already existent company. These opportunities are everywhere we look. There are not many people in the world who would give up an opportunity to better a situation in their life. The question is just how far are they willing to go and for what are they receiving in the end. Most of these situations, if not all can be analyzed through the fraud triangle. The fraud triangle consists of three different parts. The first part would be the perceived financial need or the pressure upon the person. This could be caused by the person situation where they may be in need, or possibly someone in their life pushing them to do the act. It could also be something as simple as a want that they feel they should go after no matter what it takes or the cost. All students have had the over whelming amount of stress to be successful. Stressing to get the perfect score on a major grade or finding the determination to do a challenging assignment. We wonder if all of our routines and tips used for school work actually guarantee our success as a student. As it may only help somewhat and not give us the result we desire. Our mindset and amount of work provided guarantees our success. Being successful as a student requires determination, preparing for situations you will encounter as a student, and stopping procrastination in its tracks. First off, as a successful student you need to have a positive outlook on each situation you are given. To succeed by trying your best is a part of determination. As students if we don t have any determination than what do we have left to get any work completed? We have to have motivation to get through doing any type of work provided. If we don t get any work done it means, we have incomplete the task given which is not being successful or putting in your 100% effort. • 23. St. Thomas Aquinas On The Existence Of God St. Thomas Aquinas is considered to be one of the greatest minds of the western world as well as one of the greatest theologians. In his work Summa Theologica, which he revised many times over the course of his life, he explored the existence of God, and there are essentially five ways in which St. Thomas Aquinas argues the existence of God. The first way is the argument from change, the second way is the argument from causation, the third argument is the argument from possibility and necessity, or the reductio argument, the fourth way is the argument from gradation of being, and the fifth way is the argument from harmony. These arguments for the existence of God are presented in his work Summa Theologica. In regards to the first argument, Aquinas states that our senses prove that things are in motion. From there, potential motion becomes actual motion, and this actual motion can turn potential motion into actual motion. The example Aquinas uses is, Thus that which is actually hot, as fire, makes wood, which is potentially hot, to be actually hot, and thereby moves and changes it. Because of these arguments made by Aquinas, he says that nothing can be moved by itself because if something is both in actuality and potentially at the same time, then they have to be actual in one way but potential in a different way. Additionally, going back to the wood example, For what is actually hot cannot simultaneously be potentially hot; but it is simultaneously potentially cold. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Edward Abbey also touches on pathos by creating a sense of fulfillment, even though the snake who the author has become so accustomed to has left. The snakes leave for second time and it says, I will not see the gopher snakes again. Nevertheless, I will feel their presence watching over me like totemic deities (Abbey). When Neville Chamberlain became British Prime Minister in 1937, a policy of appeasement had already begun, Chamberlain adapted it as his own policy He would find out what Hitler wanted and show him that reasonable claims could be met by negotiation rather than by force (Lowe). The policy of appeasement s success is debatable. Although it can be accountable for contributing to World War Two, it did delay a possible war that the Allied powers were not prepared for. In the time the policy of appeasement was active Hitler had achieved rearmament, re occupation of the Rhineland, gaining allies with Mussolini and General Franco who all had simular ideologies. There are notable depictions of a sense of entrapment among protagonists in works such as Alice Munro s Dimension and Train. In these short stories, the central characters, Doree and Jackson suffer from a sensation of feeling trapped, due to their life experiences, which ultimately leads them becoming motivated to go onto the next chapter of their lives. There are overlapping themes and writing styles in each story, therefore accentuating the similarities between the experiences of Doree and Jackson, and bring the two stories closely together, evoking strong emotions and pathos within the reader. Thematically, Munro shows parallel ones in both Dimension and Train, with the most prominent ones being isolation, and relationships with family members and its affiliation with sexuality and gender. Munro s writing style rings identical in both stories as well, as each one incorporates the use of flashbacks, once again implementing a way to compare the characters, as the flashbacks provide explanations for being emotionally confined. Lastly, a prominent technique used is the way in which each story ends abruptly, stimulating a response in the reader of wanting more to the story, as the endings both foreshadow a start to a new life, although Doree breaks free whereas Jackson seemingly follows his cycle as a result from feeling trapped. Perhaps, adults should adopt a childlike mentality to life and view life with its hardships as an adventure. Emerson discusses this idea as well is his essay, Nature. The sun illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child. The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has retained the spirt of infancy even into the era of manhood (Emerson 183). Gender Dilance And Imbalance In Virginia Woolf s The Waves First of all I will start by saying that in this essay I will respond and discuss the gender balance or imbalance in Virginia Woolf s The Waves. Virginia Woolf was and still is one of the foremost modernists of the twentieth century. Today in my opinion she is seen as a true and impeccable writer in regarding the description of women in the Victorian era. The Victorian age, as a patriarchal society, marginalized and basically destroyed women s position. In Virginia Woolf s The Waves we can see this difference between man and woman but surprisingly not always. In fact I believe the Victorian era was like a time of stagnation for women. We have six main characters in The Waves, three are females and three are males: Susan, Rhoda, Jinny and Bernard, Louis and Neville. Here we have a balance between genders. Three women and three men but all of them are different from each other and basically they are three types of Victorian women and men, each taking their one path in life. Rhoda is dreamy and quiet, withdrawn so much from the reality of the world the other live in. She is in my words in another world . The difference between Louis and Rhoda or male and female is that the man had more opportunities and much more support and opportunities in everything at that time; career, money, education. A revolutionary leader would want all the support he can get, but because Velutha is inferior, he does not accept him. • 35. Contributions In Bryan Sykes s The Seven Daughters Of Eve Nearly everyone feels some desire to learn about their past and the origin of their ancestors. In Bryan Sykes novel, The Seven Daughters of Eve, he takes his readers through the experiences he faced and obstacles he overcame while piecing together the ancestral past of Europe. Ninety five percent of living native Europeans can trace their past back to one of seven women, whom Sykes named Ursula, Xenia, Helena, Velda, Tara, Katrine and Jasmine. He discovered these clan mothers by studying the mutations found in the control region of mitochondrial DNA. People who had the same or very similar mitochondrial DNA sequences were grouped together and in the end Sykes was left with seven groups. The purpose and benefit of comparing mitochondrial DNA is that every person receives their mitochondrial DNA from their mother. While recombination shuffles and changes the genes in chromosomes, mitochondrial only changes through mutation, making it a reliable source for genetic study. With mitochondrial DNA by his side, Sykes began to look for answers to some of the world s greatests questions concerning ancestral origin and human colonization throughout the world. Fortunately, Sykes scientific discoveries have benefited society as a whole in many ways. First of all, Sykes research dismisses the existence of races. Instead of categorizing and grouping people by color, origin or culture, he looks at the shared genetic information among people and links them to one another accordingly. The ... • 42. Maus Elements Art Spiegelman s Maus is a famous, Pulitzer Prize winning tale about the journey of a Jewish Holocaust survivor. Despite the amount of similar storylines, Spiegelman s creativity with the normal elements of comics has won him high praise. This analysis will focus on Spiegelman s unique twist on icons, layouts, diegesis, abstraction, and encapsulation as displayed by Maus. Icons are pictures that are used to embody a person, place, thing, or idea. McCloud hammers this concept home by drawing random things, such as a cow (McCloud, pg. 26), but reminds the reader that it is technically not a real cow. It is just an image. Additionally, by including less detail, Spiegelman makes his characters easier to relate to, or as McCloud references, more universal. After Vladek recalls the hanging of a few of his associates, Spiegelman illustrates a very plain, bleak image of him mourning their loss in present day. The image consists of the most basic character features, making it effortless for the reader to mentally input their face on Vladek s. Overall, this amplification through simplification (McCloud), aids the reader in feeling the emotion of the character, finding a deeper connection to the story as a whole, and can reveal universal truths. The layout of a comic is the relationship between one panel to the rest of the panels in the sequence, the page, and the rest of the book. Spiegelman constructs the layout of his panels to bring his story to life. When Vladek is telling the story about the mandatory registration of all Jews, which led to the disappearance of many close friends (pg. 91), Spiegelman places Vladek at the bottom right hand corner of the page. This establishes the imagery of the boxes weighing down on him in present time, as he appears to be struggling to get through the story and contain his emotions. Furthermore, when Anja s father is telling Vladek that the Germans intend on making an example of the Jews who ran the black market. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though there are also many advantages of a sole proprietorship, there are other alternative forms of business organizations that I would recommend, such as a general partnership. A general partnership is a form of business organization that comes into existence when two or more persons carry on business together with a view to a profit. In order to form a general partnership, a series of criteria must be met and understood such as; the partnership must register its name and obtain a business license, a partner cannot be employed by the partnership, all benefits of the partnership business must be received by the partners directly, all partners are personally liable for all the obligations of the business. There are many reasons why I would recommend a general partnership for Stan, rather than a sole proprietorship. The first reason is because there is an option of a limited liability partnership, which means that individual partners are not personally liable for the professional negligence of their partners and some other obligations if certain requirements are met. Another reason why I would recommend a general partnership is because the partner legislation in each jurisdiction provides default rules, which is a kind of standard form agreement for the internal organization of a partnership that applies unless the partners agree to some other arrangement.
