Different Interpretations Of A Privileged Life
As a white male living in the United States of America, one could say that I am privileged.
However, whether or not I live a privileged life is a matter of comparison. There are certainly
people who are more privileged, and absolutely people who are less. It is not likely that one will
find the definition of a privileged life in a dictionary. Simply put, it is too hard to fit such a
broad meaning into the three or so lines of an average definition. There are many different
interpretations of the meaning, and this essay s purpose is to explain the differences between
them. People may look at their life in times of disparity and think to themselves that they do not
lead a privileged life. The problem that lay within those people is that they are sitting in their
heated home, laying on their memory foam mattress, and eating a warm home cooked meal.
The reality of the situation is that there remain others with far worse situations than the one that
particular person is in. Someone might make a choice to lead their life the way that a less
privileged person would. For example, the documentary Living on one follows four college
students who travel to Guatemala and live off one dollar a day. The four students say We knew
that we d never be able to truly replicate poverty but we did believe that this would be a valuable
experience and a great way of sharing the stories of our neighbors as well. They are correct in
saying that for the reason that they got to leave after the

Essay On The Huron First Nations
The Huron first Nation in Canada
The Huron were Iroquois tribes who lived in the area around Georgian Bay. They were first nation
in Canada. Wendake was the original homeland of the Huron occupying a fairly compact area of
central Ontario between the southern end of Georgian Bay and Lake Simcoe. After the dispersal of
the Huron by the Iroquois in 1650, one group relocated to Lorette (just north of Quebec) where it
has remained. The population of Huron in 1535 probably numbered somewhere between 30,000
and 45,000. The French estimates of the four core tribes of the Huron Confederacy in 1615
varied from 20,000 to 30,000 and 16 to 25 villages. After European contact, the Huron population
loss was dramatic. By 1640 epidemic and war had reduced them to less than 10,000. After their
dispersal in 1649 by the Iroquois only 300 Huron were able to relocate safely at Lorette near
Quebec. Another 1,000, mixed with Tionontati and Neutrals, escaped to the western Great Lakes to
become the Wyandot. The number of Huron adopted into the ... Show more content on

had no such opportunity, and threatened with the loss of their trade position with the Dutch, they
desperately needed the Huron to supply them with fur, or at least allow them to hunt outside their

and the Huron were powerful enough to keep Iroquois hunters confined to their own lands. Today
every Huron has been distinguished. They did not have simple life. Their life was really hard after

Lady Midnight Robedy Clare
This review of Lady Midnight will contain spoilers from Cassandra Clare s pervious series The
Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments.
I love Cassandra Clare s books, I really do and after I have been waiting for Lady Midnight for over
a year, I was pretty excited and had quite high expectations. Let me tell you that they have been
meet!
Lady Midnight was amazing. It is probably Clare s best work to date and that is saying something.
There was something about Lady Midnight that was different from her other books, I think it had to
do something about the writing. It seemed different, but I really enjoyed it.
Lady Midnight follows Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn five years after City of Heavenly
Fire. They have both grown a lot since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stuff goes down towards the end of the novel that changed my opinion of him, but I am hoping that
in the new novel or the one following something does change.
I love that we get to see characters from both The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments
because I love them too much to let them go. It was really nice seeing something familiar.
Mark, Mark, Mark. Okay I loved Mark. He broke my heart it was. It has gone through so much and
being back with the ones that love him.
The one thing that I love about Clare s writing is that she can create so many different point of
views, but they all sound so different. It s done wonderfully in Lady Midnight and I cannot wait to
read more about these characters.
What I also love about Lady Midnight is that we find out things that we didn t know before about
the world it gives us an insight on laws, people, and events that are new to us.
That ending though I don t know how I am going to hold off to book 2, because seriously it was
so good and I need to know what is going to happen next. My heart has been ripped out of my chest.
Cassandra Clare brings the magic of the shadow world into a new light, in a gripping first novel.
Lady Midnight is dark, fun and full of ups and

What Is Slavery In Ancient Rome
Slavery in ancient Rome differed from its modern forms in that it was not based on race. But like
modern slavery, it was an abusive and degrading institution. Cruelty was commonplace.
A common practice Slavery had a long history in the ancient world and was practiced in Ancient
Egypt and Greece, as well as Rome. Most slaves during the Roman Empire were foreigners and,
unlike in modern times, Roman slavery was not based on race. Slaves in Rome might include
prisoners of war, sailors captured and sold by pirates, or slaves bought outside Roman territory. In
hard times, it was not uncommon for desperate Roman citizens. To raise money by selling their
children into slavery.

Economic Growth And Development Of Development
In this write up, I examine the idea of development and briefly looked at its historical development
until the age of neo liberal and market propelled development we are current witnessing with a
view to proposing directions for future development. As I do these, I will examine the of this
importance development for Africa. Development can be seen as the study of the causes and
consequences of economic change in society. Development can mean different things to different
people depending on the lens used in viewing it. It was seen as part of the geopolitical project to
lure newly independent countries of the world away from communism to capitalist orientation of
the countries of Western Europe and North America (Sachs, 1992). It was a geopolitical project that
has to do with economic growth, industrialization and modernization (Veltmeyer, 2011). Setting up
the liberal dimension of development, W.W. Rostow (1960) in his work The Stages of Economic
Growth, set the stage for capitalist economic development as he identified five stages of
development to include (1) the traditional which has to do with primitive technology, hierarchical
social structure and barter trade relation, (2) pre conditions for take off where education,
entrepreneurship capital mobilizing institutions assist economic progress, (3) take off stage is one
with rapid economic growth, technological application and investment and urbanization; (4) drive

A Primate s Talking Analysis
Look Who s Talking elucidates the way different animals coexist, work, and communicate in their
social environment. From ants, to bees, to wolves and cows, no matter the size of the animals, they
all have their methods when it comes to working together.
Many similarities can be drawn between Sapolski s A Primates Memoir and the documentary Look
who s talking. From the size of a community to the way the animals communicate, baboons
distinguish themselves from other social species. The wolf lives in a small pack to assure its
survival; the bee lives in a hive with thousands of other workers; the ant lives in a very large
colony; the baboon lives in a troop. At the top of a baboon troop s hierarchy is an alpha male. He

Comparison Of Feminism In The Arabian Nights
Dasha Kofman
Arabian Nights Paper
11/14/17
Abstract
In my paper I will discuss how Sharazade s role as a woman allows her to act as an advocate for
female empowerment, through literature and storytelling. Initially, I will focus on the feminist
role of Sharazade and how she is placed within her circumstances: 1001 nights of storytelling to
the King to spare her life and the masses of woman after her. I will then go on to examine how
Sharazade champions the case of feminine within her tales. She does so by intertwining female
characters of power and intelligence. I will then go on to examine how women are viewed within
the story, from slaves to warriors. Finally, I will take both Sharazades perception of feminism and
how they are viewed within the story to examine their value within the story s setting, and the
greater world. Sharazade reveals the harsh truth behind how women are portrayed in literature and
the intensity in which they are finalized. She is allowing us to understand that women can not be
placed under an umbrella term, but rather are distinct individuals who play in the structure of
society both good and bad. Although they are portrayed as such, women aren t just women but are
first and foremost, people.
Shahrazad: Icon of Feminism
The Arabian Nights also known as One Thousand and One Nights is a tale about Shahryar whom
the reader refers to as the Sasanian king. Shahrazade, the heroine of The Arabian Nights, has
been noted as a women s activist figure in literature, a woman who utilizes her intelligence to
spare not only her own life, but the lives of women to come. In the frame story, King Shahriyar
find out that his wife is committing adultery. The king then begins to order for virgins to satisfy
his sexual pleasures and kill them before they commit the same atrocities. Every night for three
years, he took a virgin to his bed and then killed her in the morning. When the virgins run out, the
daughter offers herself and the tales of 1001 Nights begins; These tales often criticized by many
people who argue that women are not tools to satisfy a man s pleasures. Her plan is simple yet
cunning she uses stories of thrill and marvel to keep herself alive as long as it takes to save the

Non Civil Rights Issues In Education
The most glaring issue when it comes to talking about non civil rights problems in the current
administration is global warming. We as humans across the world have put our future generations
in danger. It should be our responsibility to right the wrongs the best that we can before it gets late.
Unfortunately, the current administration would like us to think that global warming not only isn t
an issue, but that it does not exist at all. This shows a basic lack of responsibility and an uncaring
callousness that got us into this situation in the first place. To look at statistical data and numbers,

After reading the first two chapters of Glenn and Goldthwaite book The St. Martin s Guide to

author mentioned that the teacher should look up writingprograms and reading centers in the
campus of the university. As this could help students solve their writing issues when the class
period is not sufficient. Especially if you have ESL students, these programs might be very

The report presents a case about AMB, which is a leading pension real estate advisory firm that has
recently proposed to turn itself into a publicly traded Real Estate Investment Trust (REITs) and is
planning to persuade its client to contribute their real estate assets to create a new REIT.
Furthermore, the report also includes considerations of Anne Shea, who is the Assistant Vice

Importance of REITs in Pension Fund
REITs plays a very important role in pension funds because it offers both income and upside.
Further, it also provides an opportunity for pension funds to increase both liquidity and returns, and
decrease volatility that will attract them so as to boost their investments in REITs.
An analysis of REIT s nature and an evaluation of REIT as Growth Stock or Value Stock

whereas some are interested in investing in real estate. REITs provide a combination of both by the
individuals that are investing in securities and later on the trust will be investing in real estate.

Four Categories Of Love
George Sand claimed that, there is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved. Humans
as a species crave interaction and have a longing for love. Love a person feels can be the driving
force for their actions, causing people to commit inappropriate actions and have unthinkable
thoughts. However, it can also cause eternal happiness and happy endings. At a philosophic
standpoint there are four different categories for love: Philia, Storge, Agape, and Eros. Philia is
often translated to mean brotherly love or friendship. This can be the love a person feels for
their friends, neighbors, co workers, and the people in their lives below their family. When
people consider others to be friends it is often because they have shared interest or hobbies.
Friends are people that a person can confide with and feel safe with. A person wants to have this
feeling with someone and because of that this type of love can drive a person to actions they
would not normally do. It is because of the connection they feel towards that person and the
closeness they feel. It might be a shared event or story. Banana Yoshimoto wrote a novel titled,
Kitchen, that involves a man and woman falling in love after a shared experience. When Yuichi
s classmate came to confront Mikage about her relationship with Yuichi she claimed that, But
love is not a joke, it also means sharing someone else s pain (Yoshimoto 72). What the troubled,
jealous girl was saying is that loving someone involves sharing connections with a person. In this
case Mikage and Yuichi shared the pain of the lose of two loved ones. Together they were able to
feel each other s pain which caused their love to grow closer as the connections deepened.
Yoshimoto continued the book by adding a second part to the novel that was a story all on its
own. In this part of the story a young woman loses the love of her life, Hitoshi. She fell into
despair and pain. At the same time as she was struggling with the lose of her best friend, another
young man was losing the love of his life. Together they created ritual to honor their loved ones
without knowing the other existed. When they eventually met they made the connection of death.
Together they were able to work together

Different Methods Of Preventing Vitamin D Deficiency And...
Seasonal affective disorder is a mood disorder characterized by depression, which occurs around
the same time every year (Partonen, 1998). It is hypothesized that being deficient in vitamin D is a
reason for having seasonal affective disorder. We have researched four different methods of
preventing vitamin Ddeficiency and seasonal affective disorder. The most used methods of
achieving adequate vitamin D levels were found to be indoor tanning, natural light, light therapy
and vitamin D supplementation. This research is important because it affects the well being and
quality of life in every day people. During this project, we will assess which of the following four
methods: indoor tanning, natural light, light therapy, or vitamin D supplementation is the most
effective way to treat seasonal affective disorder.
When looking at seasonal affective disorder, the environment where someone lives greatly affects
their depressive symptoms. As stated earlier, distance from the equator has proven to add to the
significance of people with depression in the winter months. A study was conducted to see the
difference in the rate of depression searches using the internet based on global location. The study
compared the United States with Australia, given that the U.S. lies in the northern hemisphere, and
Australia in the southern hemisphere. The two countries have greatly different climates, with
Australia remaining warm and sunny through most of the year. The results took into account the

Scrooge Symbolism
Based on what I read Scrooge is a grumpy person with no feeling for the people around him.
Dickens doesn t like this and says it is a big no no is his world. Scrooge spends money on only
what he needs to get by. He doesn t get why Christmas is such a big deal, even though everyone
else is celebrating it with cheer. In fact, he hates the Christmascheer and expresses his feelings. He
despises poor people and say that they should go to jail. He does not have any joy, but he s not
depressed. Scrooge almost wants to damage people s day and does it often. The text says he is a
hard worker as it states he was a tight fisted hand at the grind stone, Scrooge! A squeezing,
wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! He can also really stand the
elements, the cold., the hot, the rain, the snow, the... anything. Not only can he withstand the
elements, but based on the information from the text I inferred that he is the elements, resilient and
unforgiving.
The text explicitly states that the Spirit is the Ghost of Christmas Past (Scrooge s past), even the
spirit quotes I am the Ghost of Christmas Past in it conversation with Scrooge. First they went to
Scrooge s depressed and disheartened childhood. Immediately after seeing himself, he sobs with
bad memories. Scrooge says I wish ... but it s too late now , the spirit asks his what is the matter ,
Scrooge says, Nothing. There was a boy singing a Christmas Carol at my door last night. I should
like to have given him something that s all . This is Scrooge s first time thinking about doing
something favorable, after thinking about his childhood.
Then they go to another one of Scrooge s Christmas breaks spent at school, but in this instance,
his little sister comes to bring him home, she said that their dad finally let little Ebenezer come
home for good. Lastly Scrooge remembers the time he had partied one Christmas and for a few
bucks they made the whole neighborhood of kids happy. Scrooge s fiancee says that he cares too
much about money and not her so she breaks up with him. The ghost then disappears through the
floor. Scrooge wakes up and go to the other room to find lots food. He finds The Ghost of

Ionic Bonding Lab Report
Ionic It was just like any other day when Maggy and Nesa spotted a sulfur atom that hadn t been
bonded with. The sulfur was a perfect home for Maggy and Nesa because it would satisfy the
octet rule, the ultimate goal of every atom(with a few exceptions). They remembered learning
about the lewis dot diagram in biology class which showed how the process was possible. From
that class they also learned that magnesium usually has an ionic bond with a non metal as
well[3,4,7,9]. So, when it came time to interact with he sulfur atom, the interior electrons kicked out
Maggy and Nesa. With the twins gone, the two atoms bonded due to their charges being
opposite[10]. This ionic bonding gave properties to both of the atoms that they would have never...

Examples Of Dishonest In The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is an exceptional piece of American literature written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, in
1925. It follows the story of 32 year old Jay Gatsby, from the perspective of newcomer Nick
Carraway. He moves to West Egg, and settles down next to Gatsby, who throws lavish parties for
the neighborhood. Eventually, we find out that Gatsby is pining away for Daisy Buchanan, his
love five years previous. He pursues her, but it turns out to be his pitfall. In the end, Daisy
accidentally hits someone, for which Gatsby takes the blame and gets shot while swimming by the
husband of the woman Daisy hit. The tragic ending can be attributed to one person; Jay Gatsby. He
was responsible for this terrible tragedy because he lied about his character, he refused to deal with
the present situation, and he ruined Tom and Daisy s marriage.
Gatsby is responsible for his own regrettable ending because of his dishonesty and deception. He
was dishonest about a lot of things. He lied about his job, his past, and does nothing to dismiss
the wild rumors surrounding him. Two of these include that he was a German spy, and that he
killed a man once. When they first met when Gatsby was as a poor soldier, he was dishonest to
Daisy about his wealth as well. She said he acted rich , and he did not correct her. This leads to
the whole misunderstanding and rage at the end of the novel when Jay is exposed by Tom for how
he made his money. If he had been honest about how he came to be rich, then there would

Taking a Look at Hinduism
Many religions offer an exact path to the afterlife; illuminated by various rules and regulations that
one must follow to reach enlightenment. Hinduism, on the other hand, is much more complex,
offering multiple ways to achieve moksha and providing many answers to the ancient question of
what happens after we die? Many people think that Hindus believe in many deities, but the Hindu
concept of Godis much broader than that. In fact, Hinduismitself encompasses much more than just
one specific set of religious beliefs. While some Hindus believe that God is a divine being with
certain identifiable attributes, others believe that God cannot be defined and is an all pervading
being that extends beyond everything. Although some beliefs differ, the majority of Hindus see
the concept of God in multiple ways. Among these are the concepts of God as one and many,
God and the soul, God as sound, God as image, God in nature, cows, and avatara. One of
Hinduism s most distinguishing features is the concept of multiple gods. These multiple gods are
manifestations of the various powers of the divine. Hindus believe that the all pervasive God is
both one and many. Because this concept carries the idea of God as an omnipresent being,
everything can be seen as being God s form. Hindus worship many Gods, but they also believe that
the divine is singular or one. These Gods are representations of different aspects of the overall God.
Although their worship of multiple

Packing on the Pounds
College students at Colorado State University are experiencing a significant weight gain within
their first year of college. I ve experienced this weight gain first hand by packing on seven pounds
in just over two months. Three more pounds and I ll be a part of the 20% of college students who

just under one third of them achieved the Freshman 15 ( Freshman 15 Statistics, n.d.). Based just
off these statistics alone, there is no doubt that weight gain is a real thing in college students. A
solution must be put in place at Colorado State University to stop this weight gaining epidemic that
is occurring across the country.
Many people wonder what it is about college that causes such a tremendous weight gain for
students. According to Nicole Campbell, a multitude of reasons contribute to college students
packing on the pounds. Of these reasons, diet, exercise, and stress are the overwhelming contributors
to the excessive amount of weight gain (Campbell, 2013). When dealing with exercise, many

Uncertainty is Part of the Adventure
By Silvia Mordini
The fastest way to break the cycle of perfectionism is to give up the idea of doing it perfectly indeed
to embrace uncertainty and imperfection. Arianna Huffington
Life is messy. I wouldn t want it any other way. I am in lovewith imperfect people. My favorite
moments are when I m unshowered, lost in a new place, first waking up in the morning or after
long 24 hour travel days.
I relate easiest to rumpled people who aren t afraid to show me what they look like when they cry

cheese like holes of uncertainty to happen. Maybe I ll understand every other word, or less, but I
have faith that I ll still be able to communicate with this fellow human being. Uncertainty is a
master teacher of faith. With her lessons we grow less serious, stop being so weary from being

Kobe Bryant Speech
The Black Mamba, Kobe Bean Bryant, became the youngest player to ever join the NBA, and
has struggled personally to become one of the most successful players of all time. Kobe
Bryant was born on August 23rd in 1978 and named after a famous steakhouse. At just the age of
6 Kobe s dad (Joe Bean Bryant) had retired from the NBA and decided to move his family to Italy
to play overseas basketball. Joe had a stellar college career averaging 20.3 points and 11.1
rebounds per game but couldn t compete at the NBA level with the same ease. In the eight years
Joe spent in the NBA he played for the San Diego Clippers, Houston Rockets, and the
Philadelphia 76ers. Growing up with two very athletic sisters, Shaya and Sharia, Kobe was very
good at both soccer and basketball. The family returned to Philadelphia in 1991 and Kobe was
enrolled into Lower Merion High School. In his four years at Lower Merion he lead his team to the
state championship and won it every year. In Kobe s senior year he averaged 30.8 points, 12

Jeremy In The Wild Analysis
I just want to start off by saying that I really enjoyed watching survivor this year. The show is
unscripted and completely in the wild. This means there are very limited cultural influences of the
contestants and we, as viewers, get to see firsthand the actions and the thoughts of the contestants.
Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes, and survivor provides a
prime real life example for us to do this. I just want to get it out there now that I think Keith
should ve won, however, I think Jeremy is still a very worthy winner. There were several ways that
playerschose to outwit, outlast, and outplay this season that can all be illustrated by psychological
principles. Examples of these include: Hindsight bias,

Persuasive Essay On Freedom
We as a society like to think of ourselves as free. Free to go where we choose, do what we like,
and live our lives as we deem fit. Of course, we all realize that it doesn t always quite work out so
perfectly and there are logical barriers keeping you from living every day eating candy and
riding roller coasters. We certainly don t have total freedom in that sense, but we believe we are
free in the sense that we can choose things for ourselves and live life by our own rules, within
reason. But what if we have even less control than we think? Several notable philosophers have
contemplated what it means to have freedom and whether or not we have any choices at all. I talk,
of course, about determinismand the human psyche.
Section Two: Analysis
Among the first influential philosophers to cover this issue was Arthur Schopenhauer in his
Prize Essay on the Freedom of the Will back in 1839. According to Schopenhauer, freedom is the
absence of everything that impedes and obstructs (Schopenhauer 174) He goes on to state that
there are three individual types of freedom: physical freedom, moral freedom, and intellectual
freedom. To put it simply, physical freedom is the absence of physical restriction. If you are not
physically bound, held in a room against your will, or paralyzed, then you are physically free. He
explains moral freedom and describes it as being the ability to will yourself to do something
without any external forces to influence you. And finally, he covers

Women workers were among the first laborers to experience the hardship of industrial revolution
and probably the first to form unions. Many iconic women have participated in the labor

organizations. Jessie Lopez De La Cruz is one of the celebrated women who played a significant
role in fighting against genderstereotype in work and became a union organizer for the United
Farm Workers (UFW). Becoming a union organizer was not easy for Lopez considering the
circumstances that existed during that time where male workers could not take orders from female

accompanied their husbands to the farms. However, women were often allocated low paying
jobs such as pruning while men were allocated high paying jobs. The UFW divided labor among
gender lines and women including mothers and daughters were assigned different roles and
subjected to experiences that were different from that of men including fathers and sons. The
Mexican traditional customs gave men power over women and while men held more
administrative duties, women roles included cooking, secretary work, domestic duties and other
auxiliary roles. The source specifically talks about how Lopez became vocally aware of the
injustices that the farm workers particularly women experienced in the 1960s. Despite the
participation of women in the labor struggles and in farm works, they were paid low wages and

Board Breaking in Martial Arts Essay
Board breaking is often exhibited as an incredible talent performed by martial artists at

breaking is an illustrated example of a perfected technique as one would use in a real situation.
The accuracy, strength, and power of these techniques is demonstrated through the break. Many
people are amazed by breaking, but don t fully understand how truly easy it is. Breaking can be
explained by both the physics behind the act and the mental aspects of the preparation of the
break. Breaking really isn t as hard as people make it to be. It is all determined by the precision of

Because of the way that he carries himself we would fear him, feeling the power of his

Analysis Of The Book Speak By Laurie Halse Anderson
The novel Speak , by Laurie Halse Anderson captures the thoughts of a new high schooler caught
in some deep drama of the past. From the start of school, Melinda Sordino is shunned, glared at,
talked about, and poked at because of one incident at a party from the end of last summer. With
her friends turned away, her grades down, her family combative, and her looks deteriorating, what
does she have left? Nothing has been seeming to go right for Melinda in and out of school since
that night. She has silently appointed someone responsible for this situation, someone named IT ,
Andy Evans. Every time he s around she feels sick. The protagonist of Speak, Melinda Sordinohas
become depressed, insecure of herself, and flustered around others. Depression can come from
many things such as being overwhelmed, loss of something loved, or triggered by an illness.
Melinda Sordino has lost all of her friends, acceptable grades, and her family life. She has become
an introvert, not listening in class and ignoring any crowd of people. Late in Second Marking
Period of Speak, after getting yelled at for her inadequate grades, Melinda finds a paper clip and
remarks, I open up a paper clip and scratch it across the inside of my left wrist . Pitiful. If a
suicide attempt is a cry for help, then what is this? A whimper, a peep? ( Rent Round Three
pg.87), she talks about a cry for help , which is a sign of depression and she cuts her wrist, sort
of, but it still draws blood, which is a major sign for not being content. Also, there are hints at the
condition of her lips in parts of the novel, they are scabbed and chapped, she is picking at them.
Maybe a sign of depression, a nervous, anxious habit? All in all, Melinda Sordino is depressed
because of the loss of many things she loved in her life. Not being confident in yourself can
cause emotional damage that isn t easy to reverse, and Melinda belongs to many insecurities. It
isn t easy for her to see what she has become since the incident. In subchapter, Winter Break , on
page 70, Melinda shares her feelings to the readers, saying, I was a huge disappointment. I m not

The Cold War Of 1945-1991
So be it
Will the United States or the Soviet Union continue propaganda or resort to an attack? Many
democracies across the world like North America, Western Europe, Japan grew in prosperity after
World War II ended. The United States became the world s wealthiest and most powerful country.
These democracies rivaled the United States economically. The United States and the Soviet Union
had many differences that didn t cause a full fled war, but a quiet, propaganda and secretive filled
war that pushed both to the edge. This was known as the Cold Warof 1945 1991. The main causes
of the war were sphere of influence, Ideology, and military factors. The contradiction of who threw
the first punch still occurs today; in this case, the Soviets were most responsible for the Cold War
because of the, Iron Curtain speech, fears of the West, and the spread of communism. In conclusion,
despite the evidence that supports the United States, the Soviet Union was most responsible for the
Cold War. In the Iron Curtain Speech given by Winston Churchill gave in Fulton that describes his
perspective of how the Soviets were no longer trusted. Churchill said that Stalin hadn t fulfilled his
promise to have free elections in Poland. Stalin also made the situation worse when there were fixed

Testosterone And Prostate Cancer Essay
The objective of this paper was to find a correlation between elevated levels of testosterone and
prostate cancer. The rationale behind evaluating high levels of testosterone and prostate cancer is
testosterone is necessary for the development of the prostate. Elevated levels are needed for
adolescent males can form their reproductive system, in which the prostate is included. In addition,
testosteroneis important in the formation of the adrenal gland because testosterone, being an

The pathway begins with an androgen receptor, which binds different androgens, such as estrogen
and testosterone. (Estorgen is the hormone mainly found in women although, men also have it.
The form men have it in is called estradilol) The androgen receptor is recognized by the ligands
5О± dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone, which are both present in male sexual
development. After the testosterone is formed it is bound to a serum sex hormone binding globulin
(SHBG) and begins to circulate through the body. However, just because the SHBG is bound to
the testosterone only the free form of testosterone can enter into the prostate. Once inside the
prostate, the testosterone has changed into a more potent form of itself, allowing the prostatic cells
to begin to grow. When these cells begin to grow, the prostate does as well. [2] Since testosterone
is derived from a cholesterol molecule, it can easily pass through membranes, like the plasma
membrane, because it is hydrophobic. Other studies believe that a mutation in the androgen
receptor is found to increase the cancer stage. These mutations are found between zero to four
percent in the latent stage and stage B prostate tumors. (Stage B prostate cancer is a cancer that can

The Unified Effect In The Fall Of The House Of Usher
During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, (412) is the first
sentence in The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. This beginning sentence sets the
tone of dark. Gothic Literature s style has elements of fear, horror, gloomy and death; it gives the
feeling of suspense and fear. This story is a great example of Gothic Literature. In this story the
narrator goes to Usher s house, which is mysterious, and becomes aware that the house is like
Usher who is sick. Poe s technique of the unified effect accomplishes its intended purpose through
the setting, plot development and imagery. One way Poe accomplished the unified effect was by
the way he described the setting. Poe used very descriptive words, Feeble gleams of encrimsoned
light made their way through the trellised panes, and served to render sufficiently distinct the more
prominent objects, (416). This sentence gives a certain dark tone Poe was achieving. This simply
means that a dim, reddened light was shining only on the important objects. The light being
encrimsoned suggest that there is blood or death. This is foreshadowing the ending of the story
which contributes to the plot development for Poe s technique.... Show more content on

The Contemporary Advocates Of Liberalism
In the thoughts of the contemporary advocates of Liberalism, one of the most noticeable and
extensive accomplishments of the Early Modern time period is the expression, protection, and
justification of civil liberties including the ability to run for and attain office. From the
seventeenth century to present day, a number of distinct argumentative policies and approaches
have been established in order to defend the common civilian s ability to attain political office.
Over the past several decades, great advancements have been made in order to allow minorities
and even females to run for office. Politics and religion are two of the toughest matters to
deliberate with people of any area. The only item more problematic to have a heart to heart about
than politics and religion is the practice of taking religious means and interpretations into the
political jurisdiction. Some of the most controversial and newest topics in present day society are
those that are deeply affected by religious means such as abortion, legalization of same sex
marriage, and warfare. Richard Rorty and Alan Stout have very conflicting views over when and if
it is socially acceptable to bring religion into a discussion over public concerns. Although neither
philosopher prohibits the practice of religious support in an argument, Rorty believes that using
religion in the conversation dealing with public concern is ignorant, senseless, and irresponsible.1

Common Criminal Quotes
This quote is significant because it details how people who have committed smaller crimes do
not represent as large of a threat to The Party as political criminals. Political criminals have
demonstrated an active hatred for The Party s ways and a desire to change the political setting.
Therefore, common criminals are given positions of trust because The Party understands that their
ideals can be changed with much less effort than the political criminals. Winston explains that
Party officials claim that he started talking in his sleep and said things such as Down with Big

hatred for Big Brother. Although Winston previously took an active role in expressing his hatred
for Big Brother when writing in his diary in the beginning of the novel, he was previously able to

Building Relationships With Customers Is A Key Marketing...
Building enduring relationships with customers is a key marketing objective for most firms
(Elbedweihy et al., 2016). Customers choose to identify with brands they perceive as attractive,
motivated by their self definitional needs fulfillment (Bhattacharya Sen, 2003). Identifying with a
company that has an attractive perceived identity may result in benefits to customers in terms of
self enhancement (Marin et al., 2009). Customers will feel the motivational impulse to attain a
psychological attachment to a brandwhen they perceive the brand as attractive and as partially
fulfilling one or more of their fundamental self definitional needs (CurrГЎs PГ©rez et al., 2009).
Customer experience is generated from customer value and is a customer s perception based on
interactions through either direct use or distance appreciation of products (Hansen Christensen,
2003). Holbrook s (2002) stated that there are three values measuring user experience: usability,
social value and usage pleasure. Usability can be defined through efficiency, learnability,
memorability, and represents a broader construct integrating perceived ease of use and perceived
usefulness. Social value accrues to the user because of possessing a particular product. Finally,
pleasure is referred to as soft functionality of a product that represent hedonic value that defines

The Pros And Cons Of The Western Union
Why has Western Union been able to adapt to severe disruptions and survive over so many years?
It never confused the business it was in with the way it conducted its business. At its core, Western
Union was about facilitating person to person communications and money transfers whether via
telegraph, wireless networks, phone, or the Internet. We always saw ourselves as a
communications company, says President Christina Gold. Contrast that with Kodak. By defining
itself too narrowly as a product company all those years, it was headed for a fall.
Kodak teetered on the precipice and with it stands some of the other once great businesses of the

success made it difficult to adjust. The more successfully you use a way of working, the stronger

Essay on Thoreau s Journey to Find the Simple Life
Simple is the way of life that transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau advocated as the most
fulfilling of all. Although sometimes irrational, Thoreau wanted a life that was more closely
connected with nature in comparison with the majority of a rapidly industrializing America. He
favored a more agrarian approach rather than a mechanized form of work and production, for that
he believed was alienating man from his roots. Walden, one of Thoreau s most famous
commentaries on such a lifestyle, puts his ideology in perspective as he trod the forests of Concord,
Massachusettsnear Walden Pond. Living in and around a small cabin, Thoreau realizes that when
one is with nature and nature alone, he sees life as immeasurable and unlimited in its... Show more

He goes on to say, I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life...to drive life into a
corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean...publish its meanness to the
world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience and be able to give a true account of it in
my next excursion (74). In this rather long passage, he outlines his true sentiment about life and
living. He puts his feelings in very plain, broad terms, claiming that in order to know what life
has to offer, one must do all that they can to experience it, and then judge for themselves. One
cannot have lived if they have not confronted the true essential facts of life, whether they may be
sweet or bitter. As Thoreau s journey progresses, he comes to realize that solitude, however
lonely, is no more lonely than the first spider in a new house. Using this simile, Thoreau
compares the busy spider to himself in a place that is yet to be inhabited. The spider represents
one that is living with a purpose: whether diversion or food. Thoreau on the other hand, is just as
alone as the spider, yet also scurrying in the forest for life s essentials. Neither is discontent nor
lonely, for they are living for a purpose. Thoreau s conclusion, however convoluted, summarizes his
intentions and beliefs on life as

photography since he was really young, it begins with when his father and him were walking
down Fifth Avenue and looking at the store windows he saw a bald man taking picture of a
beautiful model posing against a tree. He lifted his head, adjusted her dress a little bit and took
some photographs. Later, I saw the picture in Harper s Bazaar. I didn t understand why he d
taken her against that tree until I got to Paris a few years later: the tree in front of the Plaza had

The Commodification Of Baseball Players
The Commodification of Baseball Players English Culminating Clayton Lyons Over the years
the great game of baseball has developed and evolved into much more than just America s
Favourite Past Time . It is now a globalized, highly profit motivated industry that seems to have a
greater interest in mass producing players into their commodity chain. In today s game there is a
wide variety of ethnicities in the Major Leagues, ranging from the Dominican Republic and
Cuba all the way to China, Korea and Japan. Now, I am one of the many who believe it is not a
bad thing to have this wide range of nationalities but the difficult journeys and hardships that
many of the international players have had to face on their road to the show can be considered
unfair when compared to the average North American ball player. Even though the conditions
for the majority of Major League players are very luxurious, they are all treated as commodities
in some ways by the millionaire owners, baseball executives and scouts. Prospects are graded on
a five tool system and only the players who fit all five categories are given the generous signing
bonuses. If you do not have the skills or if the scouts do not believe you will ever achieve those
skills you are considered to be inferior or substandard. That is what the book Moneyball is about,
it describes the process that Billy Beane, the GM of the low budgeted Oakland A s had to use to
find value in the players that were tossed aside and undervalued.

Sleeper Agents album About Last Night, and trust me, you ll feel more sure of yourself then you
ever have before. Alex Kandel s edgy, yet inspirational, voice instantly lured me in, reminding me
of a younger, more punk rockish Shania Twain. The album starts off with a super upbeat song
called Be Brave , which brought me a subliminal wave of courage that I did not know I could
feel, as if I could just get up and conquer the world. The lyrics But I could be brave in your bed

Siege Of Leningrad
In World War II, the crimes which stood out against humanity shook the foundations of the
world. From the rise of Hitler to the genocidal Holocaust, the war took the lives of more than 80
million people over the course of 6 years. Today, North American education continues to pass
down the horrors of the war as a grim reminder of the past. However, what our history textbooks
cover tend to focus on the American side of things. Instead of learning important events which
were going on in other parts of the world, we recognize our triumphs and efforts in the war. The
Siege of Leningrad, for example, is not talked about frequently, although it was a catastrophic time
for the Russians. The Siege of Leningrad was a military blockade by Hitler in an attempt to take the
city by letting Leningrad (St. Petersburg today) starve to death. By surrounding... Show more

Due to lack of food supplies, ration cards were handed out by officers very sparingly to the
citizens of the city. These cards were viewed as the key to survival during the siege; one use
cards for providing small amounts of food for the user. As cards were sought out by starving
citizens, some turned to crime and even cannibalism in an attempt to satiate their hunger. For
example, there was a report of an 18 year old who murdered his two younger brothers for their
ration cards or an instance where a man used an axe to kill his grandma, then proceeded to boil
her liver (dailymail.co.uk). The novel is similar in regards to acts of immorality, an example
being when Lev and Kolya encounter cannibals who tries to lure them into their deaths, We need

The Between The East And West Essay
In Western society, specifically the US and Europe, feminists and Neo pagans use Kali as an
icon of anger at a patriarchal society. They see Kali as a force to be reckoned with, an awe
inspiring image for women in a developing country such as India. However, women in India
rarely use goddesses as images of women s rights, despite having a pantheon rich with female
deities. Why is this? Do they revere the image of the goddesses too much to use them in a political
stance? Or are they afraid of the implications in using a Hindugoddessas a feminist icon? The people
of India worship Kali in a similar manner to their other goddesses, despite her frightening
appearance: that of a mother and wife taking care of her family, her worshippers. However, she
loses her sweeter caring nature in the West. The polarization of Kali s image between the East
and West is interesting to note. Does this view of goddesses affect the view of women and their
rights in India? How do Hindus feel about the use of Kali as an icon in the West?
The way Euro Americans see Kali as almost a raging monster might not only be because of her
appearance, but because she is an alien figure from an alien land. Non Hindus are unsure of her
purpose aside from the goddess of destruction. To Western culture, gods either are a single
monotheistic being and thus embody all aspects, or have one primary aspect or multiple aspects
that coincide with each other. A goddess of destruction, that also embodies creation, that is

Definition Essay On Dancing
An individual may define dancing as the movement of one s feet and body, usually accompanied
by music. To me, dancing has a more broader meaning. Dance is a unique type of art that
involves challenging practices, callused feet, muscles that will be sore for weeks, beauty marks
we call bruises, blisters, blood, bedazzled costumes, competitive competitions, and a family of
beautiful dancers who share the same passion as you. I found my talent at the age of five when I
became obsessed with professional dancers. Although I knew it would take a lot of blood, sweat,
and tears, I immediately started to learn all the basic technique every dancer had to know. For
example I learned the five feet positions (first, second, third, fourth, and fifth),

Medea And Jason
The play that we are discussing is called Medea that was written by the famous playwright
Euripides at the time 431 B.C.E and was also performed 431 BC.
This play was one of the Euripides most widely know plays and it was a big hit because of the
tragic storyline that it was expressing.
This play discussed the relationship between the respected and feared Medea and the father of her
children and proud warrior Jason and how over time the trust between both of them got tested and
it caused the viewers to truly consider that there is a lesson within the struggle that Medea and
Jason go through during this moment in their life. Also at the time of the first performance most
people only knew of two types of plays, comedy and tragedy and it caused an obvious sense of
tragedy because everything in the character Medea s life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Personally, I think that the reason for these themes are to present a sense of awareness to the
mistreatment of people s emotions and how trying to manipulate people can lead to a huge
downfall. This statement is proven in the play by show that Medea was pushed so far that she
thought of resorting to killing her own children because she was so hurt by how the nation that
she once ruled were treating her and most importantly, she was hurt by her old husband Jason,
who was going to leave Medea, who once was the fair princess of her own country was now
about to get replaced by a younger and more beautiful princess that had shown deep interest in
Jason. Also around that time it s much easier for a man to have a woman listen to him and his
problems while the female constantly goes through problems that they can t express fully with their
man, which can cause a big sense of neglect instead of comfort and

Thirdly, political and policies in many countries take joint venture as a prior entrance mode.
Eventually, since vehicle industry has become a main industry in Turkey, there must be good
performance from the whole industry chain that CG would have a lot of competitors and hard to
enter the market If it choose greenfield or acquisition. 3.2 On the other hand, less risk means
CG would lose profits when choosing joint venture mode. In addition, management for mixing
two companies can lead to conflicts and battles if there objectives are changed or difference.
Base on the advantages and disadvantages above, joint venture is the best choice after balancing
the risk and the profit earning. 4. Some culture guidelines for operating in Turkey 4.1 There have
culture differences between Turkey and German. Culture shared norms based on value, attitudes
and beliefs. (Daniels. J. D, Radebaugh. L. H, amp; Sullivan. D.P, 2011 ) There are 99.8% of
Turkish are Muslim so that Turkish usually don t work on Ramadan (usually in June and July) and
they never eat pork. While German is a multi religious country, there are 34%Protestant, 34%

The Bridge Betrayed And The Buddhas Of Bamiyan
The authors of The Bridge Betrayed and The Buddhas of Bamiyan both identify a different form of
cultural eradication that occurred in within the past twenty five years. In Bosnia Herzegovina, the
Serbs and Croats wanted to destroy the Bosnian Muslim symbols, culture, and population. In
Afghanistan, the Talibandestroyed the Buddhas of Bamiyan, and in turn, changed the identity of
Bamiyan forever. The practice of cultural eradication is not limited to these two cases. Cultural
eradication has taken place throughout history involving one group s desire to transform, absorb,
and destroy a particular culture and its values. The desire for destruction may seem similar,
however, the individual agendas that drive the eradication vary in each instance. Michael Sells
explores the nationalism that is expressed by the Serbsand Croats in Bosnia that he refers to as
Christoslavism. Llewlyn Morgan discusses the Taliban s iconoclastic and political motivations to
destroy the Buddhas. Both examples ultimately analyze some of the many dimensions of cultural
eradication in the world.
From 1992 until 1995, the Serbs and Croats attempted to destroy the Bosnian Muslim culture. The
Serb army shelled the National Library in Sarajvo, which began the largest book burning in modern
human history, destroying books, records, and manuscripts. The Serb army targeted major
institutions that expressed the Bosnian Muslim culture and whatever places they looked over, the
Croat Defense Council took care

Lasse Hallstrom s Choolat And La La Land Summary
Dreams are only fulfilled in fantasies. In Lasse Hallstrom s Chocolat and Damien Chazelle s La
La Land, both authors explore the importance of sacrifice, drive and perseverance in achieving
one s dream in spite of all the obstacles. Through the use of imagery of colour, characterisation and
setting, Hallstrom and Chazelle share insight on what it is like to have a dreamin today s society,
that there are many obstacles for disheartening, but that all the hardships are worth it.
Judgement and criticism were concepts far too familiar to Hallstrom and Chazelle s characters,
Vianne and Mia. Hallstrom suggests that from the moment that Vianne entered into the French

I ve got to follow my own plan. Stay here. Get my own thing going. Vianne was always on the
move, creating chocolate and happiness. To continue pursuing her passion of creating chocolate
and following the practices of her mother s people, she had to move from location to location
calling neither home. Mother and daughter were fated to wander from village to village,
dispensing ancient cacao remedies, travelling with the wind. With every shift in location, she
had to leave behind the life she had built there, beginning with abandonment of her father who
one morning, awoke to discover that Chitza and the little girl Vianne had gone away. At a young
age, Mia chose to move to Los Angeles in hopes to fulfil her dreams of becoming a successful
actress. However, it was later evident that the project she became successful in required her to go
to Paris. Whether it be love, home or family, the authors show the different sacrifices that need to
be made in order to fulfil a dream.
Colour is an important image in both Chazelle and Hallstrom s texts. Throughout La La Land,
Chazelle incorporates an abundance of bright colours in the backdrop and the clothing. However,
after travelling five years into the future, the characters are dressed in darker and duller outfits.
Chazelle s use of bright colours suggests the feeling of having hope, dreams and fantasy whilst the
duller colours imply maturity and the reality of life. Hallstrom also uses imagery of colour to

  • 2. Different Interpretations Of A Privileged Life As a white male living in the United States of America, one could say that I am privileged. However, whether or not I live a privileged life is a matter of comparison. There are certainly people who are more privileged, and absolutely people who are less. It is not likely that one will find the definition of a privileged life in a dictionary. Simply put, it is too hard to fit such a broad meaning into the three or so lines of an average definition. There are many different interpretations of the meaning, and this essay s purpose is to explain the differences between them. People may look at their life in times of disparity and think to themselves that they do not lead a privileged life. The problem that lay within those people is that they are sitting in their heated home, laying on their memory foam mattress, and eating a warm home cooked meal. The reality of the situation is that there remain others with far worse situations than the one that particular person is in. Someone might make a choice to lead their life the way that a less privileged person would. For example, the documentary Living on one follows four college students who travel to Guatemala and live off one dollar a day. The four students say We knew that we d never be able to truly replicate poverty but we did believe that this would be a valuable experience and a great way of sharing the stories of our neighbors as well. They are correct in saying that for the reason that they got to leave after the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On The Huron First Nations The Huron first Nation in Canada The Huron were Iroquois tribes who lived in the area around Georgian Bay. They were first nation in Canada. Wendake was the original homeland of the Huron occupying a fairly compact area of central Ontario between the southern end of Georgian Bay and Lake Simcoe. After the dispersal of the Huron by the Iroquois in 1650, one group relocated to Lorette (just north of Quebec) where it has remained. The population of Huron in 1535 probably numbered somewhere between 30,000 and 45,000. The French estimates of the four core tribes of the Huron Confederacy in 1615 varied from 20,000 to 30,000 and 16 to 25 villages. After European contact, the Huron population loss was dramatic. By 1640 epidemic and war had reduced them to less than 10,000. After their dispersal in 1649 by the Iroquois only 300 Huron were able to relocate safely at Lorette near Quebec. Another 1,000, mixed with Tionontati and Neutrals, escaped to the western Great Lakes to become the Wyandot. The number of Huron adopted into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lawrence River at Hochelaga (Montreal) were Huron. The Huron homeland had a lot of beaver in the beginning, but it also became exhausted from trade with the French. However, the Huron easily overcame this through trade with tribes to the north and west. Surrounded by enemies, the Iroquois had no such opportunity, and threatened with the loss of their trade position with the Dutch, they desperately needed the Huron to supply them with fur, or at least allow them to hunt outside their homeland. The Huron would not allow either of these things. Their fur went directly to the French, and the Huron were powerful enough to keep Iroquois hunters confined to their own lands. Today every Huron has been distinguished. They did not have simple life. Their life was really hard after most of them were killed ad they had to start ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Lady Midnight Robedy Clare This review of Lady Midnight will contain spoilers from Cassandra Clare s pervious series The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments. I love Cassandra Clare s books, I really do and after I have been waiting for Lady Midnight for over a year, I was pretty excited and had quite high expectations. Let me tell you that they have been meet! Lady Midnight was amazing. It is probably Clare s best work to date and that is saying something. There was something about Lady Midnight that was different from her other books, I think it had to do something about the writing. It seemed different, but I really enjoyed it. Lady Midnight follows Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn five years after City of Heavenly Fire. They have both grown a lot since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stuff goes down towards the end of the novel that changed my opinion of him, but I am hoping that in the new novel or the one following something does change. I love that we get to see characters from both The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments because I love them too much to let them go. It was really nice seeing something familiar. Mark, Mark, Mark. Okay I loved Mark. He broke my heart it was. It has gone through so much and being back with the ones that love him. The one thing that I love about Clare s writing is that she can create so many different point of views, but they all sound so different. It s done wonderfully in Lady Midnight and I cannot wait to read more about these characters. What I also love about Lady Midnight is that we find out things that we didn t know before about the world it gives us an insight on laws, people, and events that are new to us. That ending though I don t know how I am going to hold off to book 2, because seriously it was so good and I need to know what is going to happen next. My heart has been ripped out of my chest. Cassandra Clare brings the magic of the shadow world into a new light, in a gripping first novel. Lady Midnight is dark, fun and full of ups and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cruelty was commonplace. A common practice Slavery had a long history in the ancient world and was practiced in Ancient Egypt and Greece, as well as Rome. Most slaves during the Roman Empire were foreigners and, unlike in modern times, Roman slavery was not based on race. Slaves in Rome might include prisoners of war, sailors captured and sold by pirates, or slaves bought outside Roman territory. • 6. Economic Growth And Development Of Development In this write up, I examine the idea of development and briefly looked at its historical development until the age of neo liberal and market propelled development we are current witnessing with a view to proposing directions for future development. As I do these, I will examine the of this importance development for Africa. Development can be seen as the study of the causes and consequences of economic change in society. Development can mean different things to different people depending on the lens used in viewing it. It was seen as part of the geopolitical project to lure newly independent countries of the world away from communism to capitalist orientation of the countries of Western Europe and North America (Sachs, 1992). It was a geopolitical project that has to do with economic growth, industrialization and modernization (Veltmeyer, 2011). Setting up the liberal dimension of development, W.W. Rostow (1960) in his work The Stages of Economic Growth, set the stage for capitalist economic development as he identified five stages of development to include (1) the traditional which has to do with primitive technology, hierarchical social structure and barter trade relation, (2) pre conditions for take off where education, entrepreneurship capital mobilizing institutions assist economic progress, (3) take off stage is one with rapid economic growth, technological application and investment and urbanization; (4) drive to maturity is the stage of more sophistication in ... From ants, to bees, to wolves and cows, no matter the size of the animals, they all have their methods when it comes to working together. Many similarities can be drawn between Sapolski s A Primates Memoir and the documentary Look who s talking. From the size of a community to the way the animals communicate, baboons distinguish themselves from other social species. The wolf lives in a small pack to assure its survival; the bee lives in a hive with thousands of other workers; the ant lives in a very large colony; the baboon lives in a troop. • 8. Comparison Of Feminism In The Arabian Nights Dasha Kofman Arabian Nights Paper 11/14/17 Abstract In my paper I will discuss how Sharazade s role as a woman allows her to act as an advocate for female empowerment, through literature and storytelling. Initially, I will focus on the feminist role of Sharazade and how she is placed within her circumstances: 1001 nights of storytelling to the King to spare her life and the masses of woman after her. I will then go on to examine how Sharazade champions the case of feminine within her tales. She does so by intertwining female characters of power and intelligence. I will then go on to examine how women are viewed within the story, from slaves to warriors. Finally, I will take both Sharazades perception of feminism and how they are viewed within the story to examine their value within the story s setting, and the greater world. Sharazade reveals the harsh truth behind how women are portrayed in literature and the intensity in which they are finalized. She is allowing us to understand that women can not be placed under an umbrella term, but rather are distinct individuals who play in the structure of society both good and bad. Although they are portrayed as such, women aren t just women but are first and foremost, people. Shahrazad: Icon of Feminism The Arabian Nights also known as One Thousand and One Nights is a tale about Shahryar whom the reader refers to as the Sasanian king. Shahrazade, the heroine of The Arabian Nights, has been noted as a women s activist figure in literature, a woman who utilizes her intelligence to spare not only her own life, but the lives of women to come. In the frame story, King Shahriyar find out that his wife is committing adultery. The king then begins to order for virgins to satisfy his sexual pleasures and kill them before they commit the same atrocities. Every night for three years, he took a virgin to his bed and then killed her in the morning. When the virgins run out, the daughter offers herself and the tales of 1001 Nights begins; These tales often criticized by many people who argue that women are not tools to satisfy a man s pleasures. Her plan is simple yet cunning she uses stories of thrill and marvel to keep herself alive as long as it takes to save the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Non Civil Rights Issues In Education The most glaring issue when it comes to talking about non civil rights problems in the current administration is global warming. We as humans across the world have put our future generations in danger. It should be our responsibility to right the wrongs the best that we can before it gets late. Unfortunately, the current administration would like us to think that global warming not only isn t an issue, but that it does not exist at all. This shows a basic lack of responsibility and an uncaring callousness that got us into this situation in the first place. Fear from a woman who will have her rights to medical treatments taken away. Fear from members of the LGBT community who have made so much progress only to have it threatened now. • 12. Four Categories Of Love George Sand claimed that, there is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved. Humans as a species crave interaction and have a longing for love. Love a person feels can be the driving force for their actions, causing people to commit inappropriate actions and have unthinkable thoughts. However, it can also cause eternal happiness and happy endings. At a philosophic standpoint there are four different categories for love: Philia, Storge, Agape, and Eros. Philia is often translated to mean brotherly love or friendship. This can be the love a person feels for their friends, neighbors, co workers, and the people in their lives below their family. When people consider others to be friends it is often because they have shared interest or hobbies. Friends are people that a person can confide with and feel safe with. A person wants to have this feeling with someone and because of that this type of love can drive a person to actions they would not normally do. It is because of the connection they feel towards that person and the closeness they feel. It might be a shared event or story. Banana Yoshimoto wrote a novel titled, Kitchen, that involves a man and woman falling in love after a shared experience. When Yuichi s classmate came to confront Mikage about her relationship with Yuichi she claimed that, But love is not a joke, it also means sharing someone else s pain (Yoshimoto 72). What the troubled, jealous girl was saying is that loving someone involves sharing connections with a person. In this case Mikage and Yuichi shared the pain of the lose of two loved ones. Seasonal affective disorder is a mood disorder characterized by depression, which occurs around the same time every year (Partonen, 1998). It is hypothesized that being deficient in vitamin D is a reason for having seasonal affective disorder. We have researched four different methods of preventing vitamin Ddeficiency and seasonal affective disorder. The most used methods of achieving adequate vitamin D levels were found to be indoor tanning, natural light, light therapy and vitamin D supplementation. This research is important because it affects the well being and quality of life in every day people. During this project, we will assess which of the following four methods: indoor tanning, natural light, light therapy, or vitamin D supplementation is the most effective way to treat seasonal affective disorder. When looking at seasonal affective disorder, the environment where someone lives greatly affects their depressive symptoms. As stated earlier, distance from the equator has proven to add to the significance of people with depression in the winter months. A study was conducted to see the difference in the rate of depression searches using the internet based on global location. The study compared the United States with Australia, given that the U.S. lies in the northern hemisphere, and Australia in the southern hemisphere. Many people think that Hindus believe in many deities, but the Hindu concept of Godis much broader than that. In fact, Hinduismitself encompasses much more than just one specific set of religious beliefs. While some Hindus believe that God is a divine being with certain identifiable attributes, others believe that God cannot be defined and is an all pervading being that extends beyond everything. Although some beliefs differ, the majority of Hindus see the concept of God in multiple ways. Among these are the concepts of God as one and many, God and the soul, God as sound, God as image, God in nature, cows, and avatara. One of Hinduism s most distinguishing features is the concept of multiple gods. These multiple gods are manifestations of the various powers of the divine. We certainly don t have total freedom in that sense, but we believe we are free in the sense that we can choose things for ourselves and live life by our own rules, within reason. But what if we have even less control than we think? Several notable philosophers have contemplated what it means to have freedom and whether or not we have any choices at all. This beginning sentence sets the tone of dark. Gothic Literature s style has elements of fear, horror, gloomy and death; it gives the feeling of suspense and fear. This story is a great example of Gothic Literature. In this story the narrator goes to Usher s house, which is mysterious, and becomes aware that the house is like Usher who is sick. Poe s technique of the unified effect accomplishes its intended purpose through the setting, plot development and imagery. One way Poe accomplished the unified effect was by the way he described the setting. Poe used very descriptive words, Feeble gleams of encrimsoned light made their way through the trellised panes, and served to render sufficiently distinct the more prominent objects, (416). This sentence gives a certain dark tone Poe was achieving. This simply means that a dim, reddened light was shining only on the important objects. The Contemporary Advocates Of Liberalism In the thoughts of the contemporary advocates of Liberalism, one of the most noticeable and extensive accomplishments of the Early Modern time period is the expression, protection, and justification of civil liberties including the ability to run for and attain office. From the seventeenth century to present day, a number of distinct argumentative policies and approaches have been established in order to defend the common civilian s ability to attain political office. Over the past several decades, great advancements have been made in order to allow minorities and even females to run for office. Politics and religion are two of the toughest matters to deliberate with people of any area. The only item more problematic to have a heart to heart about than politics and religion is the practice of taking religious means and interpretations into the political jurisdiction. Some of the most controversial and newest topics in present day society are those that are deeply affected by religious means such as abortion, legalization of same sex marriage, and warfare. Richard Rorty and Alan Stout have very conflicting views over when and if it is socially acceptable to bring religion into a discussion over public concerns. Although neither philosopher prohibits the practice of religious support in an argument, Rorty believes that using religion in the conversation dealing with public concern is ignorant, senseless, and irresponsible.1 Rorty believes that religious reasoning is not a ... Political criminals have demonstrated an active hatred for The Party s ways and a desire to change the political setting. Therefore, common criminals are given positions of trust because The Party understands that their ideals can be changed with much less effort than the political criminals. Winston explains that Party officials claim that he started talking in his sleep and said things such as Down with Big Brother! This is significant because it shows that Winston can no longer suppress his feelings of hatred for Big Brother. Although Winston previously took an active role in expressing his hatred for Big Brother when writing in his diary in the beginning of the novel, he was previously able to control his thoughts and not state his feelings of hatred out loud. • 43. Essay on Thoreau s Journey to Find the Simple Life Simple is the way of life that transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau advocated as the most fulfilling of all. Although sometimes irrational, Thoreau wanted a life that was more closely connected with nature in comparison with the majority of a rapidly industrializing America. He favored a more agrarian approach rather than a mechanized form of work and production, for that he believed was alienating man from his roots. Walden, one of Thoreau s most famous commentaries on such a lifestyle, puts his ideology in perspective as he trod the forests of Concord, Massachusettsnear Walden Pond. In this rather long passage, he outlines his true sentiment about life and living. He puts his feelings in very plain, broad terms, claiming that in order to know what life has to offer, one must do all that they can to experience it, and then judge for themselves. One cannot have lived if they have not confronted the true essential facts of life, whether they may be sweet or bitter. As Thoreau s journey progresses, he comes to realize that solitude, however lonely, is no more lonely than the first spider in a new house. Using this simile, Thoreau compares the busy spider to himself in a place that is yet to be inhabited. The spider represents one that is living with a purpose: whether diversion or food. Thoreau on the other hand, is just as alone as the spider, yet also scurrying in the forest for life s essentials. Neither is discontent nor lonely, for they are living for a purpose. In today s game there is a wide variety of ethnicities in the Major Leagues, ranging from the Dominican Republic and Cuba all the way to China, Korea and Japan. Now, I am one of the many who believe it is not a bad thing to have this wide range of nationalities but the difficult journeys and hardships that many of the international players have had to face on their road to the show can be considered unfair when compared to the average North American ball player. Even though the conditions for the majority of Major League players are very luxurious, they are all treated as commodities in some ways by the millionaire owners, baseball executives and scouts. Prospects are graded on a five tool system and only the players who fit all five categories are given the generous signing bonuses. They see Kali as a force to be reckoned with, an awe inspiring image for women in a developing country such as India. However, women in India rarely use goddesses as images of women s rights, despite having a pantheon rich with female deities. Why is this? Do they revere the image of the goddesses too much to use them in a political stance? Or are they afraid of the implications in using a Hindugoddessas a feminist icon? The people of India worship Kali in a similar manner to their other goddesses, despite her frightening appearance: that of a mother and wife taking care of her family, her worshippers. However, she loses her sweeter caring nature in the West. The polarization of Kali s image between the East and West is interesting to note. • 56. The Bridge Betrayed And The Buddhas Of Bamiyan The authors of The Bridge Betrayed and The Buddhas of Bamiyan both identify a different form of cultural eradication that occurred in within the past twenty five years. In Bosnia Herzegovina, the Serbs and Croats wanted to destroy the Bosnian Muslim symbols, culture, and population. In Afghanistan, the Talibandestroyed the Buddhas of Bamiyan, and in turn, changed the identity of Bamiyan forever. The practice of cultural eradication is not limited to these two cases. Cultural eradication has taken place throughout history involving one group s desire to transform, absorb, and destroy a particular culture and its values. The desire for destruction may seem similar, however, the individual agendas that drive the eradication vary in each instance. Michael Sells explores the nationalism that is expressed by the Serbsand Croats in Bosnia that he refers to as Christoslavism. Llewlyn Morgan discusses the Taliban s iconoclastic and political motivations to destroy the Buddhas. Judgement and criticism were concepts far too familiar to Hallstrom and Chazelle s characters, Vianne and Mia. To continue pursuing her passion of creating chocolate and following the practices of her mother s people, she had to move from location to location calling neither home. Mother and daughter were fated to wander from village to village, dispensing ancient cacao remedies, travelling with the wind. With every shift in location, she had to leave behind the life she had built there, beginning with abandonment of her father who one morning, awoke to discover that Chitza and the little girl Vianne had gone away. At a young age, Mia chose to move to Los Angeles in hopes to fulfil her dreams of becoming a successful actress. However, it was later evident that the project she became successful in required her to go to Paris. Whether it be love, home or family, the authors show the different sacrifices that need to be made in order to fulfil a dream. Colour is an important image in both Chazelle and Hallstrom s texts. Throughout La La Land, Chazelle incorporates an abundance of bright colours in the backdrop and the clothing. However, after travelling five years into the future, the characters are dressed in darker and duller outfits. Chazelle s use of bright colours suggests the feeling of having hope, dreams and fantasy whilst the duller colours imply maturity and the reality of life. Hallstrom also uses imagery of colour to describe the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
