Philosophies of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius Essay...
Marcus Aurelius
Even today, Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is read by every class from kings to common people. The
book is a universal classic, meaning it can be related to at any time, by anyone. The philosophies
included in his book have spanned the centuries, and Meditations remains to be one of the most
influential books ever written.
Marcus Aurelius was born on April 20, 121 AD into a family of royalty. His uncle and adoptive father,
Antoninus Pius, was the emperor of Rome. Aurelius, too, was trained from birth to be a great ruler like
his father. At age eleven, he dedicated himself to religion, although he considered philosophy to be the
true, inward religion, one which did not require ceremonies necessary in others. ... Show more content

He also tried to humanize criminal laws, and have masters treat there slaves in a humane way. After
Aurelius, Romans would miss such fair treatment.
#9;After nineteen years of ruling Rome, Marcus Aurelius died on March 17, 180 in Vindobona, which
is currently Vienna. He died of a plague while in the middle of yet another war to defend the territory
of Rome. Aurelius was succeeded by his son, Commodus, who was the polar opposite of his father.
Commodus was a corrupt and evil ruler. Apparently, his father was never aware of this fact, for
Commodus fooled him into believing they were of the same mind when it came to ruling. Commodus
was the first of the bad emperors to Aurelius last of the good emperors. This lack of an able ruler
cemented the descent of the Roman empire.
#9;Throughout his life, Aurelius was never able to be happy being an emperor. Even though he had
money and privileges, and was royalty, he never became tranquil, or at peace with himself, with these
material riches. It is evident when a person reads Meditations that Aurelius would much rather have
lived the quite life of a philosopher than the public life of an emperor. He always wished that, at some
point in his life, maybe when the wars were over, he would have some time to actively pursue
philosophy. He never received that opportunity. However, he did, in the midst of all the wars he fought
in, find the time to write down his thoughts into a

1874 The Lord did not come in 1844, and the world was not burned up with fire .. this was a great
disappointment to those holy people who had so confidently looked for Christ ( Michael ) then to

The disappointment of 1844 is briefly recorded in the parable, by the statement that the Bridegroom
tarried i.e., he seemed to the expectant ones to tarry. And the confusion and darkness experienced by
all, and the many false and visionary views entered into by some who were there disappointed, are
shown in the parable by the statement: While the Bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
Yea, and in their darkness and slumber many of them dreamed strange, unreasonable things. But the
parable shows a second movement, similar, and yet different, among the same virgins. The same
general class is referred to but not necessarily the same individuals. As the first movement was the
result of light upon the prophecy, regarding the time for Messiah s second advent as the Bridegroom
of the Church, so was the second movement. But there are several differences. In the first, the lamps
of all the virgins burned alike, and the company expecting the Bridegroom was mixed; whereas in the
second movement, while all will be aroused, only those will be led out who have the spirit of the truth
in their hearts, as well as a knowledge of the Bible a trimmed lamp. Disappointment was predicted for
the first movement, and waiting for the 1335 days was necessary; but the second was not a
disappointment, and a waiting was no longer necessary; for fulfillment came exactly at the close

A Research Report On Dual Career Couples Essay
Six primary source research reports were examined for this Review of Literature and it became
evident that there were two common themes. These two common themes were shown to negatively
affect dual career couples in five out of the six primary source research reports that the student has
studied over a period of time. Theme one is occupational issues that lead to dual career marital
conflict. Theme two is support/psychological issues that lead to marital conflict.
Theme 1
The first common theme that the student has found is the occupational issues that lead to conflict in
dual career marriages. One of the major issues that the student had to consider during this process was
occupational similarities and differences. In the research from Reed and Reed, Werbel and Hames, and
Rochlen and O Brien studied the negative effects that an occupation can have on a marriage when
both spouses work in the same company. Researchers Reed and Reed study occupational mobility;
researchers want to find how dual career couples who work within the same governmental position
will react to relocations. While researchers Werbel and Hames examined the attitudes and views that
supervisors and employees have on dual career couples who work in the same company. Finally,
researchers Rochlen and O Brien study the occupational problems that men have and why they will or
will not seek career advice; they evaluate how this can cause conflict within a marriage.
Theme 2 The second common theme that the

Political Development Of The Spanish Colonies
Lower down on the map of North America were the Spanish colonies. After Columbus discovered the
New World, the Spanish Crown began governing the area. With the arrival of various explorers and
colonizers like Columbus, there were rivalries for the land within the South. By the middle of the
1500s, Spain organized themselves politically and economically in the Southwest and the Spanish
gained a tight hold on their land of New World. Until the 19th century, Spanish America was divided
into viceroyalties and governed through a Council of the Indies in Spain. The viceroys were not just
governors, they were the king of Spain s representative and therefore, were treated as royalty. This
system of under kings was developed by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. He also organized
judicial courts of appeal throughout the Spanish lands with appointed judges to ensure justice was
dispensed throughout the New World, the King s rights were upheld, and that taxes were collected.
There was a vast military presence in the Spanish colonies to protect them intrusion by other world
powers (Politics in Spanish Colonization).
In all New World towns, there were powerful and rich people who made major decisions even though
they were far away from the crown in Spain. However, after the development of the New Spanish
Colonies, a divide developed between the Spanish born Peninsulares and the Spanish, American born
Criollos. The Peninsulares and Criollos had differing opinions on who should govern the

Symbolism In Everything That Rises Must Converge By OConnor
In Everything that Rises Must Converge , it appears to be what is a simple story. It seems that O
Connor has written this story which we can easily read and understand without having any struggle
with abstract religion symbolism. Mrs. Chestny holds a different opinion about it she thinks that all
blacks should rise, but on their own side of the fence. Because she offers a penny to a small black
child, in the point of view of her son she is. With all the humiliation that Julian gets by a child s
mother. Julian says that the black women that hits Mrs. Chestny with her purse represents the whole
colored race which no longer take your condescending pennies. Julian also recognizes that the old
manners are obsolete and also that his mother s graciousness is not worth a damn. As well he who
begins to realize, that as we watch his mother die from the blow that the world is not that simple as we
thought he was. As they say it is not a world in which everything is either black or white. That is when
we realize that Everything that Rises Must Converge is not in its entirely a simple story. In the
characters we Julian who is a recent college graduate and he lives with his mother. As his dream of

Essay about Codependency in Edith Wharton s Ethan Frome
Codependency in Edith Wharton s Ethan Frome
Dependent personality disorder. (Morris) To people who suffer from this disorder, making a decision
is virtually impossible. It is only by getting assistance from others that they can make even the
simplest of choices. When some of these people come together, they rely on each other to help them
with decision making. Unfortunately, the codependency created by this situation frequently makes it
impossible for these people to separate. In fact, they often become so interdependent that
subconsciously they increasingly act in ways that will maintain the status quo. In Edith Wharton s
novel Ethan Frome, the three major characters are so dependent on each other that no matter ... Show

Ethan had not wanted to go to bed with Zeena but once Zeena began to pressure him, he backed down
and followed her to bed like a hurt child. Thus, Ethan yields to his problem and entraps himself to a
life of misery. He illustrates his own dependence by his consistent submission to Zeena and by his
inability to take control of events that are occurring in his life.
Zeena Frome, the second of the three important characters, is often unable to take direct action
without receiving confirmation from other characters. In one conversation with Ethan, Zeena says He
wanted I should speak to you about a girl (19) and then later, Wharton adds to this feeling of
dependence in the description of Zeena after she returns from the doctor, She wanted sympathy not
consolation (55). Zeena is trying to get support from Ethan to get a replacement for Mattie. However,
when she is unable to get his support, Mattie remains in the house until Zeena finally gets her needed
backing from a doctor: He wants I should have a hired girl (55). Every time Zeena is confronted with
an important decision, she needs to have someone agree with her. Without support, she will not take
direct action and will only delay the problem. Wharton emphasizes Zeena s dependence, by having her
ask Ethan, who loves Mattie, to support an effort to eliminate

Piaget s Developmental Theory
Like infants and toddlers, preschoolers grow quickly both physically and cognitively. During the
preschool years, development is truly integrated: The biological, psychological, and social changes
occurring at this time are interrelated. A theory that will work for this stage in life is from the graph on
page 22 in Exploring Lifespan Development, behaviorism, and social learning. This theory is
continuous and basically, means to learn from right and wrong. This specifically pertains to this stage
in life because during this time the child s brain, gross and fine motor skills, and health are all trying
to mature into the next stage in life. Children begin to learn how to interact with others around their
age and how they should act. A study ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A major theory that works well with this stage is Piaget s cognitive developmental theory. His theory
focuses on the mental activities such as thinking, perceiving, remembering, believing, and reasoning.
Piaget believed that children go through four universal stages of cognitive development. Apparently, a
child goes through these four stages of cognitive development because they are trying to construct a
mental model of the world. In this stage of life, a child is in the third stage, the concrete operational
stage. The concrete operational stage is just as it sounds, children at this point think more logically, but
cannot grasp abstract and hypothetical concepts. Interestingly, this is also the door to when the child
starts to think about what people say of him. This concrete way of thinking helps to let the child
understand their thoughts and how they are unique to their environment. Around this stage, most
children begin to lose their childlike imagination and start to see the world for how it really is, even if
they fully understand everything. For school age children, the beginnings of cognitive self regulation
are shown to be understood yet not fully followed through. Cognitive self regulation is the process of
continuously monitoring progress toward a goal, checking outcomes, and redirecting unsuccessful
efforts (Berk 2014). Piaget s theory works best with this stage in life because it pertains to school age
children that start their way into

Globe Theatre Vs American Theatre Essay
1.0. Introduction
Whether it be buildings, marketplaces, transport, religious or political edifices the debate as to whether
history changes are ongoing. Often people believe that history is always changing, but is that the case?
The study of history can be perceived as constantly evolving, never ending journey of discovery
(Ponic, 2011). A comparison between Shakespeare s original Globe Theatre and Sydney Opera House
provides a good example of this. Both Amphitheatres were used similarly and both in different time
periods. The following report will critically analyse the impact history has had on today s society by
comparing two buildings that were and are used for similar activities.
2.0. Theatres
Theatres are generally described as a building, part of a building, or outdoor area for housing dramatic
presentations, stage entertainers, or motion picture shows (Dictonary.com, 2017). Throughout time
theatres have been used for different things. For example, the historical Globe was primarily used for
plays whereas the Sydney Opera House while used for plays, also hosts musical productions, opera
and symphony concerts. One simply goes to theatre to watch a performance, a form of entertainment.
2.1. The Original Globe Theatre

Crystallization Is A Pure Substance
The main objective in crystallization is to produce a pure substance. A chemist is able to achieve this
by isolating the pure form from the impure form, using methods of dissolving, cooling/crystallizing,
and filtration. It is also important to select the best solvent to crystallize the material; the best solvent
shows the desired solubility behavior (Pavia et al 26).
These techniques were used to produce the pure forms of sulfanilamide and fluorene. After the
filtration step in the first experiment, the pure sulfanilamide appeared to be a mix of small, white and
yellowish crystals, resembling a powder. However, sulfanilamide should have crystallized into large
needles, which indicated that either there was too little solvent or the crystals formed too quickly. As
shown on Data Table 1, the percent yield was 69%, therefore implying that the crystallization of
sulfanilamide experiment was not completely successful a lower yield will indicate purer results.
Therefore, there are still amounts of impurities in the pure sulfanilamide. Several errors throughout the
course of the experiment could have contributed to a high yield, such as not adding enough solvent to
dissolve the solute completely, or not completely separating the crystals after crystallization. By not
separating the crystals, this most likely caused the crystals to regain its yellow color; the pure
sulfanilamide should have looked white. Another possible error could have not been letting the heated
solution with

2.2 Archimedean Copulas and Their Application
Archimedean copulas are an important family of copulas described by Genest and MacKay (1986 a, b)

Archetypal Characters In Hamlet
Through Hamlet, William Shakespeare reveals that madness is driven by different factors, and
whether someone is truly mad depends on their inner self and life struggles. In the play the characters
of Hamlet and Ophelia are both mad. Shakespeare uses archetypal characters to compare one who is
driven to madness and one who is only pretending.
Ophelia is the good girl who has gone mad . Ophelia s archetypal innocence decieved herself and led
her down a dark path. Ophelia fears doing things wrong so her strategy is to things right, with that
being said she has become a pon in everyone s game. In the games of her father she is nothing but
obedient, I shall obey my Lord. (I.iii. Line 145). Essentially when obeying her father, Ophelia has no
control over her body, her relationships, or her choices. Though in the beginning Hamlet seemed to be
a romantic he later became abusive which was apart of his mousetrap , but Ophelia became blind
because of how naive she was. The problem is that her inner self was so obedient that she could never
fight back when she needed to. In act 3 Hamlet seems to know that Ophelia is spying on him for her
father and accuses her of being a breeder of sinners , in modern day he is calling her a ... Show more

Thomas Hobbes And The Social Contract
Thomas Hobbes (1588 1679), an English philosopher published the work, Leviathan, which proposed
the concept of the social contract, in which societal assimilation mandates submission to authoritarian
rule, with a relinquishment of certain rights, in return for protection and aid. Hobbes offered a
foundational premise for benefits that otherwise might be absent, if not for societal constructs. John
Locke, another English philosopher published the Essay Concerning Human Understanding, which
expounded on the work of Hobbes by proposing a more integrated and ordered society. The societal
implications meant a surrender of some individual freedoms in return for a governmental structure

Cesare believed that punishment was an effective deterrent to crime, as the offender is rational and in
control of their actions and behaviors. Cesare expressed that the punishment should fit the crime and
that adjudication and punishment should be both swift and certain . He advocated for due process on
the implication of innocence until proven guilty and condemned torture on the same pretense as
torturous punishment towards self incrimination implies guilt prior to a guilty verdict by a judicial
body. His principles influenced classic criminology in the principles of punishment, due process,
rationality, and human rights. The Bill of Rights in the US constitution has several concepts
influenced, some believe, by his writings. (Cesare Beccaria, 2017)Jeremy Bentham, author of
Introduction to the Principles of Moral and Legislation , built on Cesare statement that punish should
fit the crime , by asserting that the hedonistic nature of man requires that the pain or punishment of
committing the crime outweigh the pleasure or reward obtained from committing the crime
(Schmalleger, 2010). Bentham asserted the position that human rationality and hedonistic pursuits
factored into the mentality of an individual s decision to commit a crime based on proper or extreme
punishments to serve as a deterrent. Hobbes

The Impact of Lowering the Drinking Age on State...
The legal drinking age in the United States will always be a point of contention. No one can settle
upon a drinking age that everyone is in agreement with; should it be 18 or 21? Ages 18 and 21 are the
most popular options, yet neither one has 100% of the vote. With the current legal drinking age in
America standing at 21, meaning that people under the age of 21 cannot purchase or consume
alcoholic food or beverages, there is the question of whether or not to lower it to 18 or 19 years old.
This paper will argue that the drinking age should be lowered, and examine its impact on State
University. Almost everyone has an opinion on what the drinking age should be. Some people believe
that it should stay at 21. However, others argue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The answer to these questions would greatly impact the future of campuses nationwide. The State
University campus is dry, meaning there is neither alcohol nor paraphernalia allowed on the campus at
any time regardless of age. In the same city, however, Christian Brothers University is a wet campus
that allows all students 21 and older to have alcohol in their dorms and around campus. A major
question that should be considered is how schools such as these two would be affected in their policies
if the drinking age were lowered. One side to this debate is that the legal drinking age should be
lowered from 21 to around 18 or 19 years old, and that young adults should be allowed to drink in
controlled environments. This idea is presented by Ruth Engs, a professor of Applied Sciences at
Indiana University. She states that environments such as taverns, pubs, restaurants and official
university functions can be considered to be controlled environments. In these situations responsible
drinking could be taught through role modeling and educational programs. Mature and sensible
drinking behavior would be expected (Engs). In her article, Engs uses phrases such as forbidden fruit,
and a badge of rebellion against authority to describe how teens view drinking. In her opinion, if the
drinking age were to be lowered, young adults would no longer feel the pressure to drink in order to
be cool.

A Study Of Ecology And Its Effects On The Environment
Competition in ecosystems has become central to the study of ecology, and has been implicated as a
major factor behind the patterns of species abundance and distribution. Though often studied together,
abundance and distribution are two distinct designations, abundance being the density of a species in a
given area, and the spatial arrangement of that species in an area is referred to as the distribution
(Brown, 1984). In ecological terms competition refers to a fight between two organisms, of the same
species or different, for a limiting resource, leading often to an adverse effect on one or both organism
(Birch, 1957). When one of the organisms in the competition out competes the other for the desired
resource this results in a negative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to emphasize that exploitation and interference competition mechanisms can be
intraspecific or interspecific, thus are classified as real competition, while apparent competition is
typically only of the interspecific type (Birch, 1957). With that said, of all forms competition,
interspecific competition, the competition between two or more species, has been studied most
intensively as cause behind patterns of distribution and abundance within populations of species.
However, there has been much disagreement regarding the prominence of interspecific competition in
natural environment, and whether it actually effects the abundance and distribution of species. In this
paper the history and application of interspecific competition, along with a common model used to
illustrate it will be evaluated, through their use in various ecological researches.
History of Interspecific Competition Though the study of ecology is a relatively new science, the
earliest records of competition in biology and in the environment can be traced back to Charles
Darwin (Park, 1954). Darwin, the father evolution, placed great emphasis on the importance of
competition, specifically interspecies competition, in the process of natural selection and species

Early Emotional Child Development Essay

skills gained in the early years can be of a significant relevance to later life. I will show my

Other psychoanalytical theorist Erikson contradicted Freud s idea based on biological stages by
introducing child development in the context of social and cultural influences (Cunningham, 1993).
Therefore we would talk about the psychosocial development as staged the changes occur rapidly and
each stage would be different from the previous one. Years on, many researches and observations have
been undertaken and new psychoanalytical theories started to reject Freud s and Erikson s staged view

The Stuxnet Computer Worm: Harbinger of an Emerging Warfare Capability

In September 2010, media reports emerged about a new form of cyber attack that appeared to target

Such concerns have generally involved the infiltration of a computer system for purposes of degrading
its capabilities, manipulating data, or using the device to launch cyber attacks on other systems. The
Stuxnet worm, 3 which was first reported in June 2010 by a security firm in Belarus, appears to be the
first malicious software (malware) designed specifically to attack a particular type of ICS: one that
controls nuclear plants, whether for power or uranium enrichment. The malware attacks and disrupts a
Microsoft Windows based application that is employed by a particular ICS produced by the German
company Siemens. 4 The worm can be spread through an air gapped network by a removable device,
such as a thumb drive, and possibly through computers connected to the Internet, and it is often
capable of remaining hidden from detection. It is difficult to determine the geographic origin of the
malware, as cyber attackers often employ

The For Breast Cancer Action
Pinkwashing is the systematic marketing of products with pink ribbons or other pink motifs within
brand design, which gives the appearance of the company s intention to give some part of the profit
towards breast cancer causes. Ironically, the money made from this marketing will often not
significantly benefit somebody with breast cancer. The pink ribbon was originally created by the
Susan G Komen foundation yet anybody can use this symbol, because there is no intellectual
copyright on it. Pinkwashing is term was first coined by the organization called breast cancer action,
whose mission is to Breast Cancer Action s mission is to achieve health justice for all women at risk of
and living with breast cancer (Breast Cancer Action 2015). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This can be attributed to excessive pinkwashing of everyday products in our economy, because they
indicate that cultural attitudes surrounding breast cancer are susceptible towards politically biases in
medical treatment. Breast cancer is a particular social issue that has had an incredible amount of bias
affecting how the medical community addresses solving it, and much of it can be seen surrounding the
dialogue around pinkwashing products. Treatment for chronic diseases in modern medicine tends to be
an expensive endeavor for patients, and thus difficult to access for many. One would think that the
huge financial resources generated by selling trendy pink products would assist in covering for these
treatments, but there is not much proof that this happens. There are numerous reasons why this money
may not be reaching women. One reason is that there might be a cap on the companies donations
(Truesdale and Lopez 9). This means that no matter how many items that have the branded pink on
them are sold, the company has already set aside a certain amount of money to donate towards their
selected charity. Any access amount of money generated from selling the pink item will not be
included in the donation. Consumers may be able to see how nonprofit charities spend their money,
but profit based companies are not obligated to disclose this

A Brief Note On Older Care And Employment Of Migrant Workers
3. Marketisation of Older Care and Employment of Migrant Workers in Western Countries
Researchers focus on the marketization of older care in western countries, including Northern
European countries, Italy, Spain, and the UK (Bettio et al., 2006; Shutes and Chiatti, 2012).
Meanwhile, there are findings revealing the difficulties of care workers recruitment and retention, as
well as potential labour shortage in the care sector and demand for migrant workers (Shutes, 2014).
The migrant workers they concerned are foreign born migrants who are undertaking care work for the
older people in the input countries. The employment of migrant care workers in European countries is
influenced by state policies towards care and the intersection with immigration policies (Williams,
2012; Shutes and Chiatti, 2012). The care service for older people has been shaped by the increasing
role of the market. The marketization of care and the implications of the processes of marketization
for who provides care and under what conditions need further researches (Daly and Lewis, 2000).
Based on date of the employment of migrant care workers in the familial care in Italy and in the
residential care services in the UK, Shutes and Chiatti (2012) argued that different institutional
contexts produce similar outcomes as regards the employment of migrant workers in care work for
older people. The marketization of care and immigration controls contributed to the recruitment of
migrant workers in both contexts

Shelley s Frankenstein and Wilde s The Picture of Dorian Grey
What makes a man a monster
Stories of monsters have captivated readers attention since the very beginning even though the
definition of what a monster is perceived to be is complex and vague. The word monster and its
meaning in today s culture is very opinionated. Most people think of monsters in an evil sense because
of what todays pop culture has depicted a monster out to be. Shelley s and Wilde s intentions for
monsters were not to be taken out of context from how they originated. Shelly and Wilde saw
monsters in the people and in the world surrounding them. Upon viewing this they recognized the true
fear of determining one s identity. Once they viewed this event through the eyes of the people, they
deemed necessary that they should provide a lesson by writing Frankenstein and The Picture of Dorian
Gray. The lesson of the two books are that if the creator can not handle the responsibilities of the
creation process, then the creation will fail. If the creation fails, then ultimately the creator fails and
the true colors of mankind are shown. In the novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde, the
main character is Dorian Gray. Gray s persona is contradictory to itself in a way that one may not
begin to comprehend him and his values, as not only a person but as a human being . He s good, he is
bad; he is beautiful, he is hideous; he is perfect, he is incredibly flawed. Most importantly, he is
literally two things at once he is himself, a living, breathing human

The Selfish Linda Loman in Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman
Linda, a character from Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman is a selfish housewife. She pretends to
care about her husband, but in reality, prefers that he kill himself so that she can live an easier life.
Linda is given nothing but motive for wanting her husband, Willy, to die because of the ways he
mistreats her. For example, during a family conversation in Act I, Linda, trying to put in a few words,
says, Maybe things are beginning to change , with Willy coming in right after her, (wildly enthused, to

Their whole marriage has been a lie and Linda strives for a moment of peace. Too scared to reveal the
truth, Linda holds her motives in and allows Willy to trip until he falls.
Along with her motives, Linda attempts to keep any voice of reason away from Willy, showing that
her selfish desire of her well being is more important than his. In a discussion with her boys in Act I,
Linda says, I m I m ashamed to. How can I mention it to him? Every day I go down and take away
that little rubber pipe. But, when he comes home, I put it back where it was. How can I insult him like
that? (1184) Linda claims that acknowledging the truth about Willy s possible attempt to kill himself is
an insult. But, in order to develop a solution to any preoblem, one must start with the truth. Linda
merely wants to accommodate Willy s mental problems rather than get rid of them, causing him to
stay in his troubled state of mind. In another conversation in Act II, Linda tries to push Biff away from
speaking with his father:
Linda: You re not going near him. Get out of this house!
Biff: (with absolute assurance, determination) No. We re going to have an abrupt conversation, him
and me.
Linda: You re not talking to him. (1221)
Linda does not want Biff talking to Willy in fear that her indisposed attemp to keep Willy in his
troubled state of mind will be unraveled. But in reality, Willy needs to hear the truth rather than the
promotion of a dead end dream. Linda,

Bilingualism In Canada Essay
Despite being an officially bilingual country, the most prominent language used in Canada is English.

Bottom line for visitors unless you are travelling to less touristy and more remote parts of Quebec,

North American And Indian Societies
North American and Indian societies may not have a lot of things in common, but they do have
similarities in how their population is separated. India has the caste system and North America has the
social class or class system to divide their population. These two systems are similar but they also
have their differences. According to, Sociology: The Essentials, caste system is defined as a system of
stratification (characterized by low social mobility) in which one s place in the stratification system is
determined by birth. This is also known as an ascribed status. This system in found in the traditional
Hindu population of India (Haviland 256). Although it is found in other parts of the world, India is the
most well known.
The caste system in India is divided into five different levels. Each caste possesses a different dharma,
which specified spate duties and abilities depending on the caste into which you were born. At the
summit was the dharmas of the priestly Brahmin caste, which granted these people control over all
spiritual and religious aspects of society, They also possessed the sacred power of the word, and were
the only caste permitted to read and write. Next there was the warrior Kshatriya caste, whose dharma
was to command the military and to rule the secular world as kings. The merchant Vaishya caste
follows in the traditional ranking. The Vaishyas were viewed by some of their betters as a caste of

Use Of Allegory In Dante Inferno
In Dante Alighieri The Divine Comedy, Dante uses powerful imagery and goes into immense detail on
a journey to the afterlife. Dante uses a lot of well written imagery to make his story seem more
relatable and real, to scare his readers into believing that you need only turn to God for the forgiveness
of sin. At the beginning of the story, Dante is walking in the woods in darkness feeling sad and not
right with God, after this Dante see a mountain and tries to go up but he is blocked by three beasts
which represent sin. Most everything in this story is an allegory, he means two things, literal and
figurative meaning. I came to a place stripped bare of every light and roaring on naked dark like seas
wracked by a war of winds (Canto 5 inferno), this when Dante goes into the second circle of hell and
watches as the lustful are swirl around in this never ending storm of lust. Dante is using this point of
view to try and give a realistic vibe to the readers. He talks to Francesca and Paolo two lovers who
were murdered after found having affair against Francesca husband Giovanni Malatesta. After talking
to them Dante is starting to get a sense of how real his journey is, he is feeling overwhelmed Dante
falls to the ground and pass is out. And while one spirit Francesca said these words to me, the other

transformation. This is a great novel to explore the diversity of students and how different elements
affect their culture. The big question of the unit also allows for students to recognize stereotypes in
order to see the implications that can have on the people the labels are placed on and how some labels
may be placed on them for having a particular quality, gender, race, etc. The ending and tone of the
novel also will help students with recognizing the need for accepting others while seeing that every
person should seek for his or her own

Moral Disagreement By Kwame Anthony Appiah
All around the world today, there is a lot of tension revolving around concepts of morality. In Moral
Disagreement by Kwame Anthony Appiah, Appiah writes about differing values and morals around
the world and within our society. He points out, we aren t the only people who have the concepts of
right and wrong, good and bad; every society, it seems, has terms that correspond to these thin
concepts (658). However, these concepts are not always the same with each other in every society. In
the same way that not everyone in our society believes in the same moral concepts. Unfortunately, it is
these disagreements that often separate us as people. Forming different cultures, large and small,
throughout the world. This is not a bad thing, but it does separate us as a race, leaving us to care more
for one group of people rather than humanity as a whole. In Patriotism and Cosmopolitanism, by
Martha Nussbaum, Nussbaum suggest that a way to fix this problem, and to become a cosmopolitan
person, is to teach students in our education systems more of different cultures throughout the world.
Yet not only should we learn to accept other cultures and their beliefs, but we should also educate
ourselves to accept everybody we meet, giving respect to them as individuals, if we ever truly want to
become a citizen of the world. Acceptance is a quality that is lacking within the world. Many people
do not want to accept that, for example, not everybody thinks like the. In recognition of this

I m First Here About Ainslie Rachlin Model
2. Procrastination. That is one of my terrible habits that I would love to be able to change. My final
would be a great example to talk about when it comes to procrastination! Now, here I am doing my
final on Wednesday night at 10:43 p.m. I m first going to speak about Ainslie Rachlin model and how
if I had applied this model to my behavior, I wouldn t be in this predicament right now. Ainslie
Rachlin: focuses on the fact that the preference between smaller sooner and larger later rewards can
shift over time (Powell). With the Ainslie Rachlin model, it s described as the shift change of smaller
sooner and larger later. This is where I told myself I would be doing my final two days ago. I found
myself doing other things, such as working. That would be a reversal of preference . As the days went
by, the smaller sooner reward became imminent. I knew that when I finished this final I would
officially be done for the semester, you would think that would be a big enough reward to have done
my final early?  The Ainslie Rachlin model is based on the assumption that the value of the reward
is a hyperbolic function of its delay. In simple terms, what it means is that the delay for the curve for
the reward which is describes the relationship between reward value and time delay. Decreasing
delays producing larder and larder increments in value. In other words, the value of a reward increases
more and more sharply as delay decreases and reward becomes imminent (Powell)

My Love Short Story
I always thought that I did not need anyone but myself. A black and white world with only myself in
it. I never really cared for anyone; if I did they would be a family or a close friend. Anything romantic
was always thrown out of the window. I did not want to think about love or even pay attention to it.
That all changed when I fell in love. It changed my whole world and how I viewed it. It is not just
liking someone and being in a relationship; love is so much more than that. Love is a wonderful
feeling. Love took me to places I have never been before; it taught me a lot about myself; it is a wild
roller coaster ride.
It all started when I first met him. At the time, I did not think more than our growing friendship. We
had countless conversations about ourselves, other people, and just about anything. I learned our about
similarities and differences. I would often laugh at how predictable he is sometimes. Our differences
on the other hand did not hinder our relationship. I found it interesting how he could talk and it would
captivate me. The way he would tell stories or write a poem is like a gift. His voice is deep and
melodious, which made him sound like he was singing instead of speaking. He is smarter than anyone
I have ever met; a genius is a better word. Despite being smart, he was like a child. He often acts like a
mischievous little rascal. I became attached to him. He became a drug that I got addicted to. His gentle
face made my heart flutter every time I saw

Symbols And Metaphors Of Oedipus The King
The story of Oedipus the King have many symbols and metaphors that can be interpreted differently
from person to person. There are many metaphors that are used as symbols in Oedipus the King,
which includes sight and blindness, self affliction, and the three way crossroad. These are the three
main symbols that were used in the story, and sight means knowledge, self affliction stems from a
sense of guilt, and the three way crossroad stands for decisions.
The symbol of vision is a big component of the story of Oedipus. There are several situations where
vision is presented in this story and it is a symbol of knowledge. The blind man that told Oedipus that
he would kill his father had knowledge about something that Oedipus did not. Although the blind man
could not visually see, he had knowledge that allowed him to see Oedipus future through a prophecy.
Oedipus had the ability to see and was warned by others and did not take the advice that was offered
by others. As a result, he cut his eyes out because of the awful things that he did.
The use of blindness and sight was a symbol that was used throughout the story. Some of the
characters lacked the ability to see, but they had the knowledge instead. Although Tiresias was blind,
he could see more about reality than most of the other characters. He was compensated for being blind
with his gift of prophecy. Oedipus has excellent vision, but is blind to the truth because he does not
accept the words of the prophet. He

Revenge in Hamlet and The Revenger s Tragedy Essay
In this study of revenge and revengers in two Elizabethan revenge tragedies the two plays I shall look
at are Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, and The Revenger s Tragedy, by Thomas Middleton. I shall
look first at the playwrights handling of the characters of the revengers, and then at the treatment of
the revengers by other characters in the plays.
Although having similarities in their underlying themes, and in their adherence to conventions, these
two plays present contrasting pictures of the figure of the revenger; Hamlet offering a far more
complex treatment of its main character, and The Revenger s Tragedy appearing, in comparison,
limited by the author s social message, and lacking in realistic characterisation.
Hamlet and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both revengers respond to, rather than initiate events, but Hamlet is much more an instrument of
others than Vindice, who is full of zest. Both characters carry a burden of guilt. Hamlet s Oedipus
complex, (Freud having informed us of the revenger s unconscious motives), is heavily aggravated by
the absence of his father and excessive closeness of his mother, and this accounts for the refocusing of
his patricidal wish onto Claudius, and shows how his need for revenge is internal, not purely a need to
resolve dissatisfaction with the affairs of the world , as is Vindice s. Hamlet s needs are deep and
complex, while for Vindice:
The smallest advantage fattens wronged men. [1.2.98]
Hamlet s internalisations arise because he has identified his ego with his father the lost object and is
therefore suffering from a loss of ego. His inward suffering is further intensified by his conflicts with
Ophelia and Gertrude, leading him to suicidal thoughts:
O that this too too sullied flesh would melt,
Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew!
Or that the Everlasting had not flx d
His canon gainst self slaughter! [1.2.129 132]
Hamlet is searching deep into his soul for explanations and resolutions, while Vindice simply waits for
that bald Madam Opportunity . [1.1.55]
Hamlet s delaying, compared to Vindice s incessant activity, shows that the two revengers are in a way
opposite in their approaches to the

Music Has Its Own History
Like the history of human beings, music also has its own history. From ballad opera to the present,
music has significantly evolved. Without the constant improvements, popular music nowadays would
not be where it is at. One of its main influences is from the eighties. The eighties is known as the rock
era. It is different than other eras because of its new sounds and rhythms. Thanks to digital technology,
it was easier to make both the replication of existing timbres and the creation of new timbres. Also, the
eighties introduced three new rhythms: the rock beat derived from punk, the adaptations of the
afterbeat rhythms of reggae, and the sixteen beat rhythms. These three rhythms were widely used in
almost every song in the eighties.
Along with new sounds and rhythms, musical styles have also changed. The primary musical styles of
the eighties are pop, rhythm and blues, and rock. Each musical style has its own stars. For pop music,
the primary artists were Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna. For rhythm and blues music, the stars
were Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Tina Turner. For rock music, the most well known artists
were Bruce Springsteen and U2.
John Hopson, a drummer from a band called Fastidious Ape , loves to listen to rock music due to its
irresistible drumming patterns. Stewart Copeland, the drummer of The Police, is his inspiration. The
biggest reason why he admires Copeland is because of his distinctive drumming styles. He stated that

  • 2. Philosophies of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius Essay... Marcus Aurelius Even today, Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is read by every class from kings to common people. The book is a universal classic, meaning it can be related to at any time, by anyone. The philosophies included in his book have spanned the centuries, and Meditations remains to be one of the most influential books ever written. Marcus Aurelius was born on April 20, 121 AD into a family of royalty. His uncle and adoptive father, Antoninus Pius, was the emperor of Rome. Aurelius, too, was trained from birth to be a great ruler like his father. At age eleven, he dedicated himself to religion, although he considered philosophy to be the true, inward religion, one which did not require ceremonies necessary in others. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also tried to humanize criminal laws, and have masters treat there slaves in a humane way. After Aurelius, Romans would miss such fair treatment. #9;After nineteen years of ruling Rome, Marcus Aurelius died on March 17, 180 in Vindobona, which is currently Vienna. He died of a plague while in the middle of yet another war to defend the territory of Rome. Aurelius was succeeded by his son, Commodus, who was the polar opposite of his father. Commodus was a corrupt and evil ruler. Apparently, his father was never aware of this fact, for Commodus fooled him into believing they were of the same mind when it came to ruling. Commodus was the first of the bad emperors to Aurelius last of the good emperors. This lack of an able ruler cemented the descent of the Roman empire. #9;Throughout his life, Aurelius was never able to be happy being an emperor. Even though he had money and privileges, and was royalty, he never became tranquil, or at peace with himself, with these material riches. It is evident when a person reads Meditations that Aurelius would much rather have lived the quite life of a philosopher than the public life of an emperor. He always wished that, at some point in his life, maybe when the wars were over, he would have some time to actively pursue philosophy. He never received that opportunity. However, he did, in the midst of all the wars he fought in, find the time to write down his thoughts into a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The disappointment of 1844 is briefly recorded in the parable, by the statement that the Bridegroom tarried i.e., he seemed to the expectant ones to tarry. And the confusion and darkness experienced by all, and the many false and visionary views entered into by some who were there disappointed, are shown in the parable by the statement: While the Bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. Yea, and in their darkness and slumber many of them dreamed strange, unreasonable things. But the parable shows a second movement, similar, and yet different, among the same virgins. The same general class is referred to but not necessarily the same individuals. As the first movement was the result of light upon the prophecy, regarding the time for Messiah s second advent as the Bridegroom of the Church, so was the second movement. But there are several differences. In the first, the lamps of all the virgins burned alike, and the company expecting the Bridegroom was mixed; whereas in the second movement, while all will be aroused, only those will be led out who have the spirit of the truth in their hearts, as well as a knowledge of the Bible a trimmed lamp. Disappointment was predicted for the first movement, and waiting for the 1335 days was necessary; but the second was not a disappointment, and a waiting was no longer necessary; for fulfillment came exactly at the close ... These two common themes were shown to negatively affect dual career couples in five out of the six primary source research reports that the student has studied over a period of time. Theme one is occupational issues that lead to dual career marital conflict. Theme two is support/psychological issues that lead to marital conflict. Theme 1 The first common theme that the student has found is the occupational issues that lead to conflict in dual career marriages. One of the major issues that the student had to consider during this process was occupational similarities and differences. In the research from Reed and Reed, Werbel and Hames, and Rochlen and O Brien studied the negative effects that an occupation can have on a marriage when both spouses work in the same company. Researchers Reed and Reed study occupational mobility; researchers want to find how dual career couples who work within the same governmental position will react to relocations. While researchers Werbel and Hames examined the attitudes and views that supervisors and employees have on dual career couples who work in the same company. Finally, researchers Rochlen and O Brien study the occupational problems that men have and why they will or will not seek career advice; they evaluate how this can cause conflict within a marriage. After Columbus discovered the New World, the Spanish Crown began governing the area. With the arrival of various explorers and colonizers like Columbus, there were rivalries for the land within the South. By the middle of the 1500s, Spain organized themselves politically and economically in the Southwest and the Spanish gained a tight hold on their land of New World. Until the 19th century, Spanish America was divided into viceroyalties and governed through a Council of the Indies in Spain. The viceroys were not just governors, they were the king of Spain s representative and therefore, were treated as royalty. This system of under kings was developed by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. He also organized judicial courts of appeal throughout the Spanish lands with appointed judges to ensure justice was dispensed throughout the New World, the King s rights were upheld, and that taxes were collected. There was a vast military presence in the Spanish colonies to protect them intrusion by other world powers (Politics in Spanish Colonization). In all New World towns, there were powerful and rich people who made major decisions even though they were far away from the crown in Spain. It seems that O Connor has written this story which we can easily read and understand without having any struggle with abstract religion symbolism. Mrs. Chestny holds a different opinion about it she thinks that all blacks should rise, but on their own side of the fence. Because she offers a penny to a small black child, in the point of view of her son she is. With all the humiliation that Julian gets by a child s mother. (Morris) To people who suffer from this disorder, making a decision is virtually impossible. It is only by getting assistance from others that they can make even the simplest of choices. When some of these people come together, they rely on each other to help them with decision making. Unfortunately, the codependency created by this situation frequently makes it impossible for these people to separate. In fact, they often become so interdependent that subconsciously they increasingly act in ways that will maintain the status quo. Ethan had not wanted to go to bed with Zeena but once Zeena began to pressure him, he backed down and followed her to bed like a hurt child. Thus, Ethan yields to his problem and entraps himself to a life of misery. He illustrates his own dependence by his consistent submission to Zeena and by his inability to take control of events that are occurring in his life. Zeena Frome, the second of the three important characters, is often unable to take direct action without receiving confirmation from other characters. In one conversation with Ethan, Zeena says He wanted I should speak to you about a girl (19) and then later, Wharton adds to this feeling of dependence in the description of Zeena after she returns from the doctor, She wanted sympathy not consolation (55). Zeena is trying to get support from Ethan to get a replacement for Mattie. However, when she is unable to get his support, Mattie remains in the house until Zeena finally gets her needed backing from a doctor: He wants I should have a hired girl (55). Every time Zeena is confronted with an important decision, she needs to have someone agree with her. Without support, she will not take direct action and will only delay the problem. This theory is continuous and basically, means to learn from right and wrong. A major theory that works well with this stage is Piaget s cognitive developmental theory. His theory focuses on the mental activities such as thinking, perceiving, remembering, believing, and reasoning. Piaget believed that children go through four universal stages of cognitive development. Apparently, a child goes through these four stages of cognitive development because they are trying to construct a mental model of the world. In this stage of life, a child is in the third stage, the concrete operational stage. The concrete operational stage is just as it sounds, children at this point think more logically, but cannot grasp abstract and hypothetical concepts. Interestingly, this is also the door to when the child starts to think about what people say of him. This concrete way of thinking helps to let the child understand their thoughts and how they are unique to their environment. Around this stage, most children begin to lose their childlike imagination and start to see the world for how it really is, even if they fully understand everything. For school age children, the beginnings of cognitive self regulation are shown to be understood yet not fully followed through. Cognitive self regulation is the process of continuously monitoring progress toward a goal, checking outcomes, and redirecting unsuccessful efforts (Berk 2014). Introduction Whether it be buildings, marketplaces, transport, religious or political edifices the debate as to whether history changes are ongoing. Often people believe that history is always changing, but is that the case? The study of history can be perceived as constantly evolving, never ending journey of discovery (Ponic, 2011). A comparison between Shakespeare s original Globe Theatre and Sydney Opera House provides a good example of this. Both Amphitheatres were used similarly and both in different time periods. The following report will critically analyse the impact history has had on today s society by comparing two buildings that were and are used for similar activities. 2.0. Theatres Theatres are generally described as a building, part of a building, or outdoor area for housing dramatic presentations, stage entertainers, or motion picture shows (Dictonary.com, 2017). Throughout time theatres have been used for different things. For example, the historical Globe was primarily used for plays whereas the Sydney Opera House while used for plays, also hosts musical productions, opera and symphony concerts. One simply goes to theatre to watch a performance, a form of entertainment. 2.1. The Original Globe Theatre In 1599 the theatre was opened to the public and ... • 11. Crystallization Is A Pure Substance The main objective in crystallization is to produce a pure substance. A chemist is able to achieve this by isolating the pure form from the impure form, using methods of dissolving, cooling/crystallizing, and filtration. It is also important to select the best solvent to crystallize the material; the best solvent shows the desired solubility behavior (Pavia et al 26). These techniques were used to produce the pure forms of sulfanilamide and fluorene. After the filtration step in the first experiment, the pure sulfanilamide appeared to be a mix of small, white and yellowish crystals, resembling a powder. However, sulfanilamide should have crystallized into large needles, which indicated that either there was too little solvent or the crystals formed too quickly. As shown on Data Table 1, the percent yield was 69%, therefore implying that the crystallization of sulfanilamide experiment was not completely successful a lower yield will indicate purer results. Therefore, there are still amounts of impurities in the pure sulfanilamide. Several errors throughout the course of the experiment could have contributed to a high yield, such as not adding enough solvent to dissolve the solute completely, or not completely separating the crystals after crystallization. By not separating the crystals, this most likely caused the crystals to regain its yellow color; the pure sulfanilamide should have looked white. Another possible error could have not been letting the heated solution with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ophelia is the good girl who has gone mad . Ophelia s archetypal innocence decieved herself and led her down a dark path. No one can settle upon a drinking age that everyone is in agreement with; should it be 18 or 21? Ages 18 and 21 are the most popular options, yet neither one has 100% of the vote. With the current legal drinking age in America standing at 21, meaning that people under the age of 21 cannot purchase or consume alcoholic food or beverages, there is the question of whether or not to lower it to 18 or 19 years old. This paper will argue that the drinking age should be lowered, and examine its impact on State University. Almost everyone has an opinion on what the drinking age should be. A major question that should be considered is how schools such as these two would be affected in their policies if the drinking age were lowered. One side to this debate is that the legal drinking age should be lowered from 21 to around 18 or 19 years old, and that young adults should be allowed to drink in controlled environments. This idea is presented by Ruth Engs, a professor of Applied Sciences at Indiana University. She states that environments such as taverns, pubs, restaurants and official university functions can be considered to be controlled environments. In these situations responsible drinking could be taught through role modeling and educational programs. Mature and sensible drinking behavior would be expected (Engs). In her article, Engs uses phrases such as forbidden fruit, and a badge of rebellion against authority to describe how teens view drinking. In her opinion, if the drinking age were to be lowered, young adults would no longer feel the pressure to drink in order to be cool. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Study Of Ecology And Its Effects On The Environment Competition in ecosystems has become central to the study of ecology, and has been implicated as a major factor behind the patterns of species abundance and distribution. Though often studied together, abundance and distribution are two distinct designations, abundance being the density of a species in a given area, and the spatial arrangement of that species in an area is referred to as the distribution (Brown, 1984). In ecological terms competition refers to a fight between two organisms, of the same species or different, for a limiting resource, leading often to an adverse effect on one or both organism (Birch, 1957). In this paper the history and application of interspecific competition, along with a common model used to illustrate it will be evaluated, through their use in various ecological researches. Shelley s and Wilde s intentions for monsters were not to be taken out of context from how they originated. Shelly and Wilde saw monsters in the people and in the world surrounding them. Upon viewing this they recognized the true fear of determining one s identity. • 40. Moral Disagreement By Kwame Anthony Appiah All around the world today, there is a lot of tension revolving around concepts of morality. In Moral Disagreement by Kwame Anthony Appiah, Appiah writes about differing values and morals around the world and within our society. He points out, we aren t the only people who have the concepts of right and wrong, good and bad; every society, it seems, has terms that correspond to these thin concepts (658). However, these concepts are not always the same with each other in every society. In the same way that not everyone in our society believes in the same moral concepts. Unfortunately, it is these disagreements that often separate us as people. Forming different cultures, large and small, throughout the world. This is not a bad thing, but it does separate us as a race, leaving us to care more for one group of people rather than humanity as a whole. In Patriotism and Cosmopolitanism, by Martha Nussbaum, Nussbaum suggest that a way to fix this problem, and to become a cosmopolitan person, is to teach students in our education systems more of different cultures throughout the world. Yet not only should we learn to accept other cultures and their beliefs, but we should also educate ourselves to accept everybody we meet, giving respect to them as individuals, if we ever truly want to become a citizen of the world. Now, here I am doing my final on Wednesday night at 10:43 p.m. I m first going to speak about Ainslie Rachlin model and how if I had applied this model to my behavior, I wouldn t be in this predicament right now. Ainslie Rachlin: focuses on the fact that the preference between smaller sooner and larger later rewards can shift over time (Powell). With the Ainslie Rachlin model, it s described as the shift change of smaller sooner and larger later. This is where I told myself I would be doing my final two days ago. I found myself doing other things, such as working. That would be a reversal of preference . As the days went by, the smaller sooner reward became imminent. I knew that when I finished this final I would officially be done for the semester, you would think that would be a big enough reward to have done my final early?  The Ainslie Rachlin model is based on the assumption that the value of the reward is a hyperbolic function of its delay. In simple terms, what it means is that the delay for the curve for the reward which is describes the relationship between reward value and time delay. Decreasing delays producing larder and larder increments in value. In other words, the value of a reward increases more and more sharply as delay decreases and reward becomes imminent (Powell) ... Although having similarities in their underlying themes, and in their adherence to conventions, these two plays present contrasting pictures of the figure of the revenger; Hamlet offering a far more complex treatment of its main character, and The Revenger s Tragedy appearing, in comparison, limited by the author s social message, and lacking in realistic characterisation. Hamlet s needs are deep and complex, while for Vindice: The smallest advantage fattens wronged men. • 46. Music Has Its Own History Like the history of human beings, music also has its own history. From ballad opera to the present, music has significantly evolved. Without the constant improvements, popular music nowadays would not be where it is at. One of its main influences is from the eighties. The eighties is known as the rock era. It is different than other eras because of its new sounds and rhythms. Thanks to digital technology, it was easier to make both the replication of existing timbres and the creation of new timbres. Also, the eighties introduced three new rhythms: the rock beat derived from punk, the adaptations of the afterbeat rhythms of reggae, and the sixteen beat rhythms. These three rhythms were widely used in almost every song in the eighties. Along with new sounds and rhythms, musical styles have also changed. The primary musical styles of the eighties are pop, rhythm and blues, and rock. Each musical style has its own stars. For pop music, the primary artists were Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna.
