consistency in literacy assessments across research studies will further understand of reading

one assessment tool is reliable enough to measure reading complications. These studies have found
that multiple assessment tools must be used to evaluate students reading

Pop Music Research Paper
Hi Folks, Sorry I have not written in awhile, life s been great. However watching the most recent

Poe s The Man of the Crowd As a Satire of the Penny Press
In the mid nineteenth century , the penny newspaper could be found on almost every American urban
street corner. These penny papers, as they were popularly called, provided the American people for the
first time in history with informative articles about local city events, incidents, and, more importantly,
inner city crime. These penny rags revealed an entirely new world to the American citizens; they were
informed for the first time of the many heinous crimes and murders that occurred right in the vicinity
of their own houses. At a time when America was first being introduced to such local injustices, it is
quite understandable that penny papers claiming to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In hopes of spotting such profitable incidents, penny press journalists were always on the look out for
anything suspicious and anything worthy of being sensationalized. Interestingly, in his short story, The
Man of the Crowd, Edgar Allan Poe includes a first person narrator who also seems to be on the look
out for anything out of the ordinary.
While he may not reveal himself as a penny journalist, this narrator certainly plays the part of one as
he singles out an old man making a devious gesture in the crowd and begins to speculate about his
possible criminal intentions. Like a nosy penny tabloid reporter hungry for a juicy lead, the narrator
follows the old man into the night, hoping, if not to catch him in an act of crime, then to fit his
behaviors into the mold of criminality. Interestingly, while the old man does in fact turn out to be
nothing more than an innocent wanderer of the streets, the narrator still proceeds to formulate his own
exaggerated conclusions about the old man s supposed criminal intentions. By setting the first person
narrator up as the stereotypical penny journalist and then making the very target of his exaggeration
nothing more than an innocent, commonplace man of the crowd, it can be argued that Poe is in fact
mocking the penny press for their tendency to inflate the actions of innocent people into

Relationship Between The Father And The Road By Cormac...
Cormac McCarthy is an American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He has written many novels
relating to violent and post apocalyptic genres. McCarthy has won multiple awards for his novels such
as the U.S National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award for the novel All the Pretty
Horse. His novel No Country for Old Men also won four Academy Awards. In addition to that, The
Road, also won the Pulitzer Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction. The Road is a
story about a little boy and his father who journeys through post apocalyptic America. Many have
named this novel an american classic due to one of many reasons the loving and personal relationship
between the father and his son despite the fact that any traces of life is essentially dead. McCarthy
starts his novel in the woods, where the father realises that his son and himself will not survive another
winter in their current location thus having to keep moving South. As the father stares into the
nothingness of the country he starts to think about his son, He only knew that the child was his
warrant. He said: If he is not the word of God God never spoke (5). Knowing that it will get harder to
survive, the father believes that his reason to keep living is because of his son. He proves this thought
during the conversation between him and the little boy who asks what the father would do if he died:
If you died I would want to die too...So I could be with you (11). The father s only

Explain What Occurred During The Scientific Revolution
What occurred during the scientific revolution? The scientific revolution was a period of time when
people started doubting the church. The scientific revolution modernizes the ways of thinking
dramatically. Nicolaus Copernicus made numerous discoveries about the universe; one of his
discoveries was the heliocentric theory which contradicts the church. Galileo confirming the
heliocentric theory brought him into conflict with the church. The scientific revolution modernizes the
ways of thinking dramatically.
Nicolaus Copernicus was an astronomer who arose the Heliocentric Theory which caused the
scientific revolution. Copernicus discoveries were very important, and impacted science to this day.
Copernicus constructed his data from his astronomical observations of sun centered cosmology. The
Heliocentric theory is the belief that the sun is in the center of the universe and all the planets revolve
around it. The Heliocentric Theory contradicts The Geocentric. Copernicus s heliocentric solar system
named the sun, rather than the earth, as the center of the solar system . (http://www.biography.com/).
Copernicus came up with another theory. The theory was that the center of gravity is the earth, and the
earth is the center of the moon s orbit. Copernicus theory was that planets revolve around the sun.

Argumentative Essay On Birth Control
Birth control. Most of the women in America have tried some type of birth control during their
lifetime. Currently, we are having debates to see if birth control should be free or at a lower cost to
citizens. Why do we need birth control if we already have condoms? Do we really have affordable
birth control? Can we get it easily? Does it do more than just prevent pregnancies? If birth control
really helping women and the economy? In this research paper, I will be going over these questions.
Birth control is a benefit to modern society and we have benefited from it greatly.
To get the ball rolling, we all know that taking birth control comes with a price, just like any other
daily necessity. Some women have a challenging time acquiring these preventable contraceptives due
do cost and accessibility. A variety of contraceptives are currently available to women in the US.
Including hormone pills, IUD s, patches, emergency contraception, and implants. The most common
types being the pill and IUD s. Some women prefer taking a pill every day, while others prefer having
an IUD put in that can last up to twelve years. How much does all this cost? According to Kimberley
Palmer, a writer for the US News, pill users can cost between $15 to $50 a month, depending on what
time of health care coverage you have. On a
Trombley 2 yearly basis this can cost up to $160 to $600. (Palmer) On the other hand, an IUD is a

The Economic Crisis Is the Greater Challenge than...
Globalization (a process) centers on improving the efficiency and speed that economies interact and
transform interconnectivity between sovereign nations political, social and economic cultures. For
centuries, globalized improvements in infrastructure (communication, economies, trade, and ideas)
have allowed sovereigns to improve interdependence with others. This essay will present why the
economic crisis, a global issue, is the greater challenge than pandemics to U.S. national interest.
Regarding pandemic challenges, the U.S. has among the world s best health care. The ability of the
Center for Disease Control (CDC) to respond to pandemics is better than any other nation. Over the
last 100 years, influenza pandemics have been among the leading cause of infectious deaths.
Technological advances have expanded understanding of complex pandemics and have improved our
ability to contain outbreaks or manipulate micro genomes. Caution should be considered as the same
scientific knowledge can be deliberately misused.
The U.S. works with countries, addressing infectious diseases that slow socioeconomic and
democratic development, as well as the humanitarian emergencies and civil conflicts that pandemics
contribute to. Infectious disease related embargoes and restrictions on travel and immigration can
cause economic frictions among sovereign states. Deployed U.S. military personnel will be at low to
moderate risk from pandemics yet, at the highest risk while deployed in

Cognitive Behavior Therapy And Therapy
There are many that have contributed to cognitive behavior therapy or CBT throughout the years but
we are going to focus on the founders of modern day CBT, Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck. Ellis is
responsible for the Rational emotive behavior therapy, the first of the CBT in the 1960 s. The bases of
REBT is suggest that a patient s emotional distressed stems from their thoughts about a traumatic
event, and not the event itself. Ellis developed this approach as a means to get over his personal
problems growing up, problems such as public speaking and his shyness around women. Beck during
the 1970 s developed cognitive therapy, which suggest that a patient behavior is affected by the way
they structure the world based on the attitudes and assumptions they encounter on previous
experiences. Becks main purpose was to create an evidence based therapy that addressed depression.
Beck based the validity of his theory after he tested it and the constructs with empirical studies while
conducting controlled outcome studies to determining how the outcomes would compare with existing
psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy treatments for depression. CBT is a group of related therapies
that are based on scientific research that are scientifically proven effective. When we trace the roots of
CBT it actually began in the 1940 s when there came a need for an effective but short term therapy for
WWII vets, who were returning from war and in need of therapy for anxiety and depression. Research

Out Of Ignorance In Socratic Philosophy
Socrates argues that all evil is born out of ignorance. According to Socrates, evil or wrongdoing is the
result of ignorance. Socrates assumed that nobody willingly opts to do wrong or evil things. He says
that doing wrong always injured the wrongdoer and that no one seeks to carry harm upon themselves.
The Socratic philosophy reveals that is not normal for an individual to want to do wrong on the
grounds that their perception for self interest keeps them from doing as such. People do things every
day that we may think is good but in all actuality is wrong. We may do it because we think it may
have a positive outcome but deep down we know it s not right. We may do wrong even though it may
harm us. For example, a person that cuts themselves. They re dealing with some type of pain or issue
that becomes unbearable and they re just looking for an easy way to end that feeling. By cutting
themselves they think they were relieved stress while at the same time causing bodily harm. All they
want done is to relieve the stress and rid the bad feelings they may be having. Nobody ... Show more

A lot of people may agree with this because to them only bad people would commit a crime. I would

afford food for himself or family may be forced to steal food or any necessary items that may pertain
to his survival. This person isn t thinking about the consequences or what may go wrong if he is
caught, all he is worried about is what he can do to feed his family with limited resources. This doesn t
mean he is an evil person, he s just trying to feed himself by any means necessary and unfortunately
for him he got caught. Maybe if her knew the repercussions of his actions he may have thought twice
before committing such a criminal act. There are many people who are in jail that are not evil but just

Analysis Of Katha Pollitt s The Hunger Games Feral...
In Katha Pollitt s essay entitled The Hunger Games Feral Feminism, Pollitt writes about what reality
television might look like if taken to extremes. Reality television is a huge part of our culture today,
and I not only agree with Pollitt s views and ideas of what reality TV would look if taken to the
extremes, but I believe that we have already gotten to that point. Today s reality TV shows such as
Keeping up with the Kardashians , The Bachelorette or any of the Real Housewives are among many
of today s popular shows that focus on extreme aggression, bullying, physical beauty, and sex appeal.
These TV shows teach us that it is not only ok to compromise morals and values, but that type of
behavior accepted and rewarded. In today s age, reality TV generally has to go negative and go to the
extreme in order for it to be interesting despite the lasting impact that it may have on viewers. Reality
TV has an impact on the values of their viewers and alters how they may perceive real life situations.
Therefore, it s important to take a look at some of the standards portrayed by reality TV.
Reality television is a huge part of our television viewing culture and the line between right and wrong
is not always clear to many of the viewers. The fact is, the extreme behaviors displayed are not real or
normal in the world that exists outside of reality TV. Many reality shows depict women idealizing
beauty and thinness, giving the impression that a woman s value is based

and interview questions be well structured to gain the highest quality of information gathered during
the interviews. The quality of information gathered is just as important as the quantity as described by
Havelka and Sooun (2002): Interaction between users and IS personnel was described as the quantity
and quality of communication and the amount of group activities performed, including feedback from

beginning phases for collecting and large quantity of good quality information.
Along with interviewing, it would be beneficial to hold a JAD (Joint Application development)

of the system. While a JAD session may have high costs, the benefits of a JAD session are very high

State Regulated or Federal Regulate Insurance
One of the most important economic issues in the insurance industry is the push for increased federal
regulation of insurance. According to the Washington Surveying Rating Bureau, Congress in 1945
stated that the regulation of the business of insurance would be best left to individual states. Since the
release of this statement, a common argument that state regulation is inefficient, costly, and
burdensome has been made. It is also argued that the 50 or so individual laws and jurisdictions
embody many rules and standards that are very difficult and timely as regulatory systems. These
systems have been described as very costly, and that they also deny customers the creativity of the free
market to quickly develop and market innovative insurance products. The common way to respond to
these issues in such a robust industry is typically by federal regulation. It is believed that having just
one regulator for the entire country will lead to more new products being introduced in the market
place and thus, increased competition which will be better financially for all consumers, carriers, and
agents. This logic is likely supported by the idea that it is easier to introduce a product if it is going to
only be approved by one insurance department rather than several dozens more. However, many other
factors come to play. It is important to realize that the purpose of insurance regulation is to provide
consumer protection. In RMI 3500, I have learned that there are insurance

Failure Of An After School Boat Building Team
You only fail if you do not try. Failure is many times the stopping point of a person s success. I believe
that failure is actually pushing yourself forward to later reach your goal. This failure in my life has
taught me to communicate more with my teammates and better prepare myself for what to expect. My
experience with failure involved an after school boat building team. Every year, the Metropolitan
Water District of Southern California holds an event called the Solar Cup each year at Lake Skinner.
This event involves many schools throughout California that form teams to build a boat that can be
powered by solar. My team was formed with the combination of three high schools, Tahquitz, West
Valley, and Western Center Academy. On the first day I had the opportunity to meet new people from
the different schools. This gave me the chance to create bonds with new people. It all started with
brainstorming ideas about how the boat should be. A tech report was also needed to be done so that the
organizers can know what components are going to be involved with the boat. I did the technical
report which involved having the information of each component of the boat, whether that be the
design of the boat or the materials being used for the boat. I had to make sure that each detail of the
tech report was good so that I can start on building the boat with my team. After our tech report was
done, the building process of the boat began. Throughout the whole building process, there was

Washington Memorial Research Paper
As you travel and visit a tourist location such as Washington D.C. , you see monuments such as the
Lincoln Memorial or the Washington Memorial. If you ever wonder the purpose of that monument
could be or making and placing history as a view for everyone could see. A memorial can consider,
though region, material, how large, and the significance of the stone can mean honor achievement for
those who sacrificed the wars. First of all, the agency should consider the monument correctly place
on what region best fit. Putting history in a random location does not correspond the meaning behind
the statue. An example would be meaningful such as a park. For example, the statue of Christopher
Columbus, where he is standing tall and proud in Riverside Park, located in Pennsylvania (photo). The
agencies decided to place him there because so people can remember him, Christopher of what he
accomplished in history. On the other hand, a group of people are deciding whether to place a
Holocaust Museum near a shopping mall in Washington D.C. For this reason, that creates controversy

Persuasive Essay On Lacrosse
A high intensity game that involves physical attributes and cognitive awareness describes the sport
lacrosse. People play lacrosse all over the world and the sport continues to grow in size. The sport
lacrosse dates all the way back to when Indians would play for land and resources. The word lacrosse
translates to Little Brother of War . Men and women of all ages and levels play the game lacrosse to
this day. At the Eastern Cincinnati Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, the sport lacrosse qualifies as a
club rather than a sport. The sport lacrosse should qualify as a sport because it would reduce costs,
more players would join, it offers benefits, and people would consider lacrosse as a more serious
sport.
In the Eastern Cincinnati Conference, male and female high schoolers who have an interest in playing
the sport lacrosse, have an expensive bill to pay. The cost to have a spot on the team alone estimates to
about 300 dollars. The cost covers renting the field, transportation, and the use of the weight room.
Due to the fact that lacrosse does not fall under the category of qualifying as a sport, players are
charged more money to cover the fees that the school does not cover. On top of the 300 dollars, a
requirement for all players involves the purchasing of equipment for playing. Players are required to
acquire a stick, a mouthguard, a pair of cleats, spandex, and an eyepiece. Purchasing a stick alone
ranges from 50 dollars to close to 300 hundred dollars. Since the fee for

Essay On Safety Training Center
Thank you for taking the time on being interested in this plan. The goal is to open a new Maritime
Training Center in Las Vegas, Nevada and become an established Safety Training Center in the
maritime industry to various commercial enterprises and most importantly Military Sealift Command,
the largest operator of civilian manned logistic support vessels for the U.S. Navy. Before we get into
want everyone wants to know, let me start off with a bit about my background and myself.

This is something Las Vegas can capitalize on as there is no training site available. There are a good
percentage of sailors that live in the area, as most sailors desire to live in a tax free state. I am one of
them!
There are 8 maritime academies that are pumping out 800 Third Officers and Third Assistant
Engineers every year. These new junior officers that end up sailing will eventually require attending
the courses we will be providing. Now, they are creating Junior Supply Officer(s), which I intend to
create courses to support advancement in this rate.
There are various Gun Ranges to support Small Arms Training, which is a high demand course
requirement in Military Sealift Command, even with the Unions who are contracted by Military
Sealift Command. This course alone would pay for the overhead cost at the training center. However,
this business plan is not about one course; it s about two dozen courses we can start without having to
invest in high price training aids like a simulator. However, once we get established the goal will
become a full service Maritime Center with a Simulator.
The proposed training center will be only 5 hours away from the Military Sealift Command CSU W
pool in San Diego, where CIVMARs are backlogged sometime waiting weeks for openings on their
required training. We will provide transportation to and from the San Diego

Contrasting the Gods in Homer’s Odyssey and the Biblical...
Contrasting the Gods in Homer s Odyssey and the Biblical Book of Exodus
Many authors have employed the religious beliefs of their cultures in literature. The deities contained
in Homer s Odyssey and in the Biblical book of Exodus reflect the nature of the gods in their
respective societies. Upon examination of these two works, there are three major areas where the gods
of the Greek epic seem to directly contrast the nature of the God of the Israelites: the way problems
are solved, the prestige and status that separates the divine from the masses, and the extent of power
among the immortal beings.
Before any logical argument regarding the contrasting of two works can begin, a foundation must be
established that in some way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that the people do what is commanded is evidence of the recognition of Yahweh as their
divine God, and it is a testament to the authority they ascribe to Him. The existence and recognition of
the authority of these deities does not provide the only cornerstone for this argument. To discuss the
relationship between the divine and mankind, an observation and analysis of the interaction between
the two realms is imperative. In The Odyssey, many interactions between the gods and men are seen.
One of these scenes illustrates Athena s visit to Telmakhos, at the end of which she put new spirit in
him, a new dream of his father (1. 359 360) in order that Telemakhos might not give up hope of
Odysseus return. It is this type of interaction that gives insight into the relations between the divine
and humans, and that provides a framework on which to weave the examination of those relations. An
example of this type of interaction in Exodus is found in the form of a burning bush: When, the Lord
saw that he [Moses] had gone over to look [at the burning bush], God called to him from within the
bush, Moses! Moses! And Moses said, Here I am. Do not come any closer, God said, Take off your
sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground (Exodus 3:4 5).
The interaction between Yahweh and Moses occurs many times throughout the book of Exodus, as do
other interactions between this God of the Hebrews and

Speech On Birth Control
Birth Control and Everybody Around Us
She walks into the living room where all her family was sitting, and they all look at her and ask what s
the news? . She was very disappointed in herself she thought how could she let it happen? she was too
young at 16, she didn t have a job, and she didn t even know if the father was going to be there for her.
The family looked concerned as she was about to burst into tears, her eyes filled with sadness, and
then she said I m pregnant . They all looked at her in disappointment, they thought she was going to
be the one to pursue her dreams of becoming a nurse, to actually have a degree, but even though they
were disappointed in her they knew that they had to help her raise the baby. She felt upset she didn t
know how she was going to do it while still going to school, she still had two more years ahead, and
she was due late May. Even though she had her family who was supporting her she still had to take
responsibility for her actions, she had decided that she would have to drop out of school, and start
working to take care of her upcoming baby.
This is not something new that you have read their are many young teenage girls who get pregnant
who don t have the money to support the baby, and this has been happening in the U.S. for many
years, and no one has really tried to stop it. Young teens are too scared to ask for simple birth control

Stress-Related Back Pain Research Paper
Millions of Americans have experienced back pain at one point or another in their life. Back pain is
one of the most common complaints that a doctor will hear from a patient on a visit. Understanding
the source of your pain can be very overwhelming and frustrating, especially when a structural
explanation cannot be provided. Could your back pain be triggered by stress? For many individuals,
stress is not the first thing that comes to mind when trying to establish the cause of their back pain.
However, it is quite possible that stress is the primary cause of your back pain. Stress related back pain
is real. What is stress related back pain? This is a back pain that is initiated by the psychological or
emotional factor stress, or is maintained by it, or both. In simpler terms, when we hold stress in our
bodies, it can cause a physical change that leads to back pain. Physician and professor of physical
medicine and rehabilitation at New York University, John Sarno MD, who helped to popularize the
notion of stress related back pain, contends that the patient s feelings, personality, and unconscious
issues are the direct cause of the back pain. Stressful life situations, coupled with personality
characteristics, can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

as a result of constricted blood vessels, triggered by this psychological change. A decrease in oxygen

fatigue, shifting muscle aches, and muscle tenderness. If back pain is stress related, lacking a
structural explanation, a multi disciplinary treatment option involving an assessment of the physical,

The Theory Of The Birth Territory Theory Essay
The theory I selected to apply to the above situation is the Birth Territory theory. This theory was
created from empirical data collected by the authors who serve as both midwives and researchers. It
has a critical post structural feminist undertone and elaborates on the ideas of Michel Foucault. The
Birth Territory theory predicts and elaborates on the relationships between jurisdiction (use of
authority and influence), terrain (the birthing environment), and personal emotional and physiological
experience by the mother. This nurse midwifery theory was chosen because both of the major concepts
directly correlate with the incident and are critical aspects of labor and delivery situations. MAYBE
ELABORATE A diagram of the Birth Territory theory can be seen in Appendix A. Key concepts
included in this theory are terrain and jurisdiction. Sub concepts listed under terrain include
surveillance room and sanctum . Sub concepts listed under jurisdiction include midwifery
guardianship , integrative power , midwifery domination , and disintegrative power . Terrain signifies
the aspects of the birth environment. These include physical and geographical features such as the
birthing furniture, as labor and birthing accessories, and personal support systems (birthing partner).
Terrain includes two sub concepts: sanctum and surveillance room . A sanctum is a homely birthing
environment optimally designed to promote a private, healthy labor and birth. Amenities included

Legal, Safety, and Regulatory Requirements Paper
The workplace is a delicate environment filled with different personalities types. These differing needs
of feeling safe and comfortable create many challenges in the workplace. The creation of the Human
Resource Department has helped create a safety net for all employees to fall under and create a stable
environment for employees to feel safe and secure. Regulations such as Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission and the Department of Labor have in some ways removed the common
sense and compassion in the workplace and replaced it with litigation. The effect of these regulations
have balanced the workplace and created a more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The United States Department of Labor (DOL) has a mission to protect the welfare of wage earners,
job seekers, and retirees. They also improve working conditions and ensure work related benefits and
rights. The DOL has many laws and reregulation s protecting workers that range from the Fair Labor
Standards Act, which sets standards for wages and overtime pay, to the Occupational Safety and
Health Act, which focuses on workplace safety and health. With the wide range that the DOL has
employees can feel that they have standards in place to ensure fair pay, fair treatment, and a safe
environment to work in. Without the enforcement of the DOL corporations are left to establish pay
and safety standards internally. In a business atmosphere where the importance of profit is often
placed before the employees, an environment without laws and regulations can be dangerous. An
example can be seen in other countries where labor laws are not in place compassion and common
sense also seem to be absent. In these areas workers, many times children often works long hours for
little pay. Sadly it has been shown that when corporations are unregulated the importance for the fair
treatment of employees takes a less important role. The faith in corporate America has been somewhat
fragile with the knowledge of many corporate wrongdoings like the Enron scandal, recent financial
buyout, and the ethical issues with bonuses for executives. Dipankar (2008) has a theory that

Criticism In Dorian Shelley s The Player And Dorian Gray
Monika and Lord Henry are the opposite of The Player and Dorian Gray, driving the plot to fit their
intention of changing the protagonist to fit some ideology. Their archetype is the Puppet Master,
exerting control by manipulating others. Without Monika s epiphany (Team Salvato) in realizing that
she is just a side character, but wanting more, or Lord Henry fascination of Dorian Gray s aura of
innocence, the plot of the stories would be quite dull and would not have been notable pieces of
rhetoric. When sharing poems in the day part of Doki Doki Literature Club, Monika states that her
writing has changed, telling The Player You can say I kind of had a sort of epiphany lately. She later
adds a file into the game files that say I did not do anything dangerous... All I did was untie the knot
(Team Salvato). Monika has a mentality that the other character s actions are their own, and that she is
not at fault for the events resulting of her influence. This mentality directly correlates with Lord Henry
s idea of Dorian s change in expression after he shared his intense views of vanity and life. Lord
Henry observes He [Lord Henry] was amazed at the sudden impression that his words had produced...
He had merely shot an arrow into the air. Had it hit the mark? How fascinating the lad was! (Wilde,
22). Though Oscar Wilde quickly hints that there is something deeper to his novel by writing the
reader as omnipotent, Team Salvato preferred to make the reader a character. The team subtlety hints
that there is something strange occurring in the game, saving their big reveal that Monika is the
Puppet Master until the Good Ending. This difference shows another aspect of how archetypes have
withstood time, the ability to adapt to what the author needs out of the archetype. Oscar Wilde wanted
his audience to know who was the Puppet Master from the start of the novel to set his novel apart
from other Victorian era novels; on the other hand, Team Salvato used the Puppet Master archetype to
first seem like a standard dating simulator until the ending, shocking The Player more than if they
revealed Monika s intentions in the beginning of the game. The archetype stays true to role they play
as manipulation of other

Poe s The Man of the Crowd As a Satire of the Penny Press In the mid nineteenth century , the penny newspaper could be found on almost every American urban street corner. These penny papers, as they were popularly called, provided the American people for the first time in history with informative articles about local city events, incidents, and, more importantly, inner city crime. These penny rags revealed an entirely new world to the American citizens; they were informed for the first time of the many heinous crimes and murders that occurred right in the vicinity of their own houses. In hopes of spotting such profitable incidents, penny press journalists were always on the look out for anything suspicious and anything worthy of being sensationalized. Interestingly, in his short story, The Man of the Crowd, Edgar Allan Poe includes a first person narrator who also seems to be on the look out for anything out of the ordinary. While he may not reveal himself as a penny journalist, this narrator certainly plays the part of one as he singles out an old man making a devious gesture in the crowd and begins to speculate about his possible criminal intentions. Like a nosy penny tabloid reporter hungry for a juicy lead, the narrator follows the old man into the night, hoping, if not to catch him in an act of crime, then to fit his behaviors into the mold of criminality. Interestingly, while the old man does in fact turn out to be nothing more than an innocent wanderer of the streets, the narrator still proceeds to formulate his own exaggerated conclusions about the old man s supposed criminal intentions. By setting the first person narrator up as the stereotypical penny journalist and then making the very target of his exaggeration nothing more than an innocent, commonplace man of the crowd, it can be argued that Poe is in fact mocking the penny press for their tendency to inflate the actions of innocent people into ... This essay will present why the economic crisis, a global issue, is the greater challenge than pandemics to U.S. national interest. Regarding pandemic challenges, the U.S. has among the world s best health care. The ability of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to respond to pandemics is better than any other nation. Over the last 100 years, influenza pandemics have been among the leading cause of infectious deaths. Technological advances have expanded understanding of complex pandemics and have improved our ability to contain outbreaks or manipulate micro genomes. Caution should be considered as the same scientific knowledge can be deliberately misused. The U.S. works with countries, addressing infectious diseases that slow socioeconomic and democratic development, as well as the humanitarian emergencies and civil conflicts that pandemics contribute to. Infectious disease related embargoes and restrictions on travel and immigration can cause economic frictions among sovereign states. • 14. Cognitive Behavior Therapy And Therapy There are many that have contributed to cognitive behavior therapy or CBT throughout the years but we are going to focus on the founders of modern day CBT, Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck. Ellis is responsible for the Rational emotive behavior therapy, the first of the CBT in the 1960 s. The bases of REBT is suggest that a patient s emotional distressed stems from their thoughts about a traumatic event, and not the event itself. Ellis developed this approach as a means to get over his personal problems growing up, problems such as public speaking and his shyness around women. Beck during the 1970 s developed cognitive therapy, which suggest that a patient behavior is affected by the way they structure the world based on the attitudes and assumptions they encounter on previous experiences. Becks main purpose was to create an evidence based therapy that addressed depression. Beck based the validity of his theory after he tested it and the constructs with empirical studies while conducting controlled outcome studies to determining how the outcomes would compare with existing psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy treatments for depression. CBT is a group of related therapies that are based on scientific research that are scientifically proven effective. When we trace the roots of CBT it actually began in the 1940 s when there came a need for an effective but short term therapy for WWII vets, who were returning from war and in need of therapy for anxiety and depression. • 15. Out Of Ignorance In Socratic Philosophy Socrates argues that all evil is born out of ignorance. According to Socrates, evil or wrongdoing is the result of ignorance. Socrates assumed that nobody willingly opts to do wrong or evil things. He says that doing wrong always injured the wrongdoer and that no one seeks to carry harm upon themselves. The Socratic philosophy reveals that is not normal for an individual to want to do wrong on the grounds that their perception for self interest keeps them from doing as such. People do things every day that we may think is good but in all actuality is wrong. We may do it because we think it may have a positive outcome but deep down we know it s not right. We may do wrong even though it may harm us. For example, a person that cuts themselves. They re dealing with some type of pain or issue that becomes unbearable and they re just looking for an easy way to end that feeling. In Katha Pollitt s essay entitled The Hunger Games Feral Feminism, Pollitt writes about what reality television might look like if taken to extremes. Reality television is a huge part of our culture today, and I not only agree with Pollitt s views and ideas of what reality TV would look if taken to the extremes, but I believe that we have already gotten to that point. Today s reality TV shows such as Keeping up with the Kardashians , The Bachelorette or any of the Real Housewives are among many of today s popular shows that focus on extreme aggression, bullying, physical beauty, and sex appeal. These TV shows teach us that it is not only ok to compromise morals and values, but that type of behavior accepted and rewarded. In today s age, reality TV generally has to go negative and go to the extreme in order for it to be interesting despite the lasting impact that it may have on viewers. Reality TV has an impact on the values of their viewers and alters how they may perceive real life situations. Therefore, it s important to take a look at some of the standards portrayed by reality TV. Reality television is a huge part of our television viewing culture and the line between right and wrong is not always clear to many of the viewers. The fact is, the extreme behaviors displayed are not real or normal in the world that exists outside of reality TV. • 20. State Regulated or Federal Regulate Insurance One of the most important economic issues in the insurance industry is the push for increased federal regulation of insurance. According to the Washington Surveying Rating Bureau, Congress in 1945 stated that the regulation of the business of insurance would be best left to individual states. Since the release of this statement, a common argument that state regulation is inefficient, costly, and burdensome has been made. It is also argued that the 50 or so individual laws and jurisdictions embody many rules and standards that are very difficult and timely as regulatory systems. These systems have been described as very costly, and that they also deny customers the creativity of the free market to quickly develop and market innovative insurance products. The common way to respond to these issues in such a robust industry is typically by federal regulation. It is believed that having just one regulator for the entire country will lead to more new products being introduced in the market place and thus, increased competition which will be better financially for all consumers, carriers, and agents. This logic is likely supported by the idea that it is easier to introduce a product if it is going to only be approved by one insurance department rather than several dozens more. However, many other factors come to play. It is important to realize that the purpose of insurance regulation is to provide consumer protection. Every year, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California holds an event called the Solar Cup each year at Lake Skinner. This event involves many schools throughout California that form teams to build a boat that can be powered by solar. My team was formed with the combination of three high schools, Tahquitz, West Valley, and Western Center Academy. On the first day I had the opportunity to meet new people from the different schools. This gave me the chance to create bonds with new people. It all started with brainstorming ideas about how the boat should be. Contrasting the Gods in Homer s Odyssey and the Biblical Book of Exodus Many authors have employed the religious beliefs of their cultures in literature. Upon examination of these two works, there are three major areas where the gods of the Greek epic seem to directly contrast the nature of the God of the Israelites: the way problems are solved, the prestige and status that separates the divine from the masses, and the extent of power among the immortal beings. The Birth Territory theory predicts and elaborates on the relationships between jurisdiction (use of authority and influence), terrain (the birthing environment), and personal emotional and physiological experience by the mother. Criticism In Dorian Shelley s The Player And Dorian Gray Monika and Lord Henry are the opposite of The Player and Dorian Gray, driving the plot to fit their intention of changing the protagonist to fit some ideology. Without Monika s epiphany (Team Salvato) in realizing that she is just a side character, but wanting more, or Lord Henry fascination of Dorian Gray s aura of innocence, the plot of the stories would be quite dull and would not have been notable pieces of rhetoric. When sharing poems in the day part of Doki Doki Literature Club, Monika states that her writing has changed, telling The Player You can say I kind of had a sort of epiphany lately. She later adds a file into the game files that say I did not do anything dangerous... All I did was untie the knot (Team Salvato). Monika has a mentality that the other character s actions are their own, and that she is not at fault for the events resulting of her influence. This mentality directly correlates with Lord Henry s idea of Dorian s change in expression after he shared his intense views of vanity and life. Lord Henry observes He [Lord Henry] was amazed at the sudden impression that his words had produced... He had merely shot an arrow into the air. Had it hit the mark? How fascinating the lad was! This difference shows another aspect of how archetypes have withstood time, the ability to adapt to what the author needs out of the archetype. Oscar Wilde wanted his audience to know who was the Puppet Master from the start of the novel to set his novel apart from other Victorian era novels; on the other hand, Team Salvato used the Puppet Master archetype to first seem like a standard dating simulator until the ending, shocking The Player more than if they revealed Monika s intentions in the beginning of the game.
