Food and Nutrient
• Nutrients is food substance that provides energy which is
necessary for growth and repair.
• Examples of nutrients are vitamins, minerals,
carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
• Food Is that which nourishes the body. Anything eaten or
drunk, which can be absorbed by the body to be se as
energy source ,building, regulating or protective material.

beings and act as a source of security.
Sharing of food is a token of friendship and
acceptance .

Specific function of Nutrients
• Carbohydrates
• Proteins
• Fats
• Minerals
• Vitamins
• Water from food and
water we drink
• Fiber from all plant
foods

Carbohydrates
A carbohydrate is an organic compound that consists
only of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
carbohydrates divides into groups according to the
number of individual simple sugar units.
Monosaccharide's contain a single unit; disaccharides
contain two sugar units; and polysaccharides contain
many sugar units.
Classifications of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates
The primary function of carbohydrates in humans
is to provide energy for the body.
In addition to immediately transporting blood sugar into
cells, carbs also get stored in your liver as reserves.
whole grains, beans and peas, vegetables and fruits
Sources of Carbohydrate

Proteins are essential nutrients for the human body.
They are one of the building blocks of body tissue.
Proteins are long chains of amino acids. Amino acids
are chemical compounds containing carbon,
hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen.
Structural formula of Protein
11sakil.iubat@gmail.com
Types of Proteins
Simple proteins
 Albumins
 Globulins
 Glutelins
 Prolamins
 Fibrous protein
 Histonens
 Pritanubs
Conjugated proteins
 Nucleoproteins
 Glycoproteins
 Hemoglobins
 Lacithoproteins
12sakil.iubat@gmail.com
Source of Protein
• Protein is essential for growth and the repair of body
tissue.
• Protein is essential to the structure of red blood cells,
for the proper functioning of antibodies.
Meat, milk, cheese, and egg are complete proteins.
Other sources of protein include whole grains, rice,
corn, beans, legumes, oatmeal, peas, and peanut butter.

Lipids
Lipids are molecules that contain hydrocarbons and
make up the building blocks of the structure and function
of living cells.
Lipids have mainly hydrocarbons in their composition
(Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen)
14sakil.iubat@gmail.com
Sources of fat
• In general, the main sources of saturated fat are from animal
products: red meat and whole-milk dairy products.
• plant-based sources of fat, coconut oil and coconut milk, palm
kernel oil, cocoa butter, and palm oil.
• The main function of fats in the body is to provide energy.
• Fats can also be stored in body for subsequent use.
• Fats also carry the fats soluble vitamins A, D, E and K into the body.
Function of fat
15sakil.iubat@gmail.com
Minerals
Mineral elements from an important group of nutrients
necessary for the growth and upkeep of the body. About five
present of our body weight made of mineral elements.
General Functions of Minerals
• Maintenance of acid-base balance
• Control water balance
• Contraction of muscles

Vitamin
A vitamin is an organic compound required by an organism
as a vital nutrient in limited amounts.
Vitamins are classified as either water-soluble or fat-
soluble.
water-soluble
• Vitamin B1
• Vitamin B2
• Vitamin B3
• Vitamin B5
• Vitamin B6
• Vitamin B7
• Vitamin B9
• Vitamin B12
• Vitamin C
Fat-soluble
• Vitamin A
• Vitamin D
• Vitamin E
• Vitamin K
17sakil.iubat@gmail.com
Function of Vitamin A
Vitamin A
• Vitamin A is needed for new cell growth, healthy skin, hair,
and tissues, and vision in dim light.
• Vitamin A is found in dark green and yellow vegetables
and yellow fruits, such as broccoli spinach, turnip greens,
carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, cantaloupe, and
apricots, and in animal sources such as liver, milk, butter,
cheese, and whole eggs.

Vitamin A deficiency
• Approximately 250,000 to 500,000 malnourished
children in the developing world go blind each year from
