The Rolling Stones magazine was founded in 1967 in San Francisco by Ralph J. Gleason and Jann Wenner. Gleason was a founder of one of the first jazz magazines and had experience writing for other music and culture publications before starting The Rolling Stones. The first issue was published on November 9, 1967 and featured John Lennon on the cover. The document then provides demographic information about readers of The Rolling Stones in 2016 and the reasons the author chose to examine this publication, including its appeal to young adults and creative layouts.

The Rolling Stones magazine is a biweekly edition
of music, politics and all round pop culture. The
magazine itself was founded in San Francisco in
1967. The man who was the founding editor of the
magazine was Ralph J. Gleason. The co-founder of
the magazine Jann Wenner Even though Ralph
only lived till 58 he had a busy career before the
creation of the Rolling Stones magazine. He was
actually a founder of one of the first Jazz
magazines, Jazz information. He edited and
worked with that for a few years but also wrote a
variety of magazines on stereo review and Jazz. As
for Jann, he dropped out of University and then
the Rolling Stones magazine came along. The first
issue of the magazine appeared on the 9th of
November 1967, with John Lennon on the front.

3. Here is the Rolling stones demographic from 2016. What it is showing is how many people
purchased their issues at that time of the research being collect and exactly how old they were. The
reason I chose to look at the Rolling Stones magazine is because they're popular with young adults
as well as adults. But I was going to focus my age group pushing into the young adult area of
appeal. I also really enjoy their layouts and creativity of their magazines, which I will try advance
with my own work. Another reason for me to look at Rolling Stones is due to the fact they’re one of
the greats within the magazine industry and what ever the company are selling people like hence
why they have been going on in production for so long, so any tips I can collect will benefit me
greatly.

4. The images used for this
front cover is of the whole
band Nirvana and is
placed/edited in black in
white. The reason behind
this I feel is because the
magazine is talking about
them 20 years on from
when they were in the
glory days. The black and
white gives the magazine
a feel of it being very a
archaic topic and shows
that the topic is one that is
dated.
Two of the band
members towards the
front are both making eye
contact and looking
towards the camera. To
me this suggests the topic
is a very personal one to
the band and to the fans.
Even if you might not like
the band or know little
about them the eye
contact still gives that
personal connection to
the reader.
The three members are
tiered. The reason behind
this and especially with
bands is the levels of
importance or how famous
each member is separately
to the band. Originally, the
lead singer gets a lot of
attention and in this case it
applies. The guy at the
front Kurt Cobain, lead
singer and was really the
image of the band for
many years before and
after his death. Hence why
he is at the front. Then
second is the drummer
which normally the
drummer is the one who
isn't cared about but in this
case its different. The one
who is placed second
happens to be Dave Grohl
who also happens to be the
lead singer of the Foo
Fighters. The finally the
third member who I really
don’t know much about,
probably why he's at the
back and not looking
towards the camera.

5. Even though they will have
made a lot of money from
their careers within the time
they were in the band but
the clothes they’re wearing
aren't fancy and don’t seem
expensive. This fits in with
their image as a band
because I know they liked
sticking to the style they
came up with. Not acting as
if they’re better then anyone
else or flashing off their
wealth or popularity. They
seem to be just sticking to t-
shirts, jackets and blazers
with messy long hair for the
heavy head banging.
When it comes to the
location and where the
image has been taken, it
doesn’t seem to have been
taken in a studio, even if it
has been edited that way.
But it seems that its been
taken in front of a fence
possibly somewhere in
the streets. This suggests
something again about
their image of them as a
band. This could suggest
them wanting to be closer
to the fans by being on the
streets staying humble
and not being in front of
anything expensive that
the everyday person
could afford.

6. The classic Rolling Stones masthead. This masthead has become so well known and become a classic
style. The masthead is pretty much always placed in that lovely red colour, partnered with that
black drop shadow and that nice white outline. The red is used obviously for the eye catching
appeal, big red letters at the top of the page will grab your attention. Pair that with the drop down
shadow and it gives the mast head even more eye catching abilities and even more depth to it. Of
course it works well because black and red contrast really well together and never fails to give out a
nice design. The white outline just is the topping and finishes the masthead perfectly and fits in
colour wise with the background image. The font is just become such a classic and to me its like the
serif font met Hollywood and they became this font. It still gives off the impression of the classy
image but with the heavy edits, its like its given a new lease of life. For me, I'm such a big fan if this
mass head and the effect it now has on me is how it just reminds me or makes me think if
Hollywood and Rock n Roll in its glory days. Its just something you would see in Broadway.

7. Just like with the other cover lines, the
text used is a serif. Again linking in
with the dated topic and staying along
with their image of being a
classy, sophisticated magazine. The
actual name of the band 'Nirvana' and
the way its design on this front cover is
perfect. I say this because it matches
with the image of the band that its
black, white and grey. Making the
connection of them being the same
thing so matching them both together
helps the page contrast better. Just I
said its like the other cover lines but
because it’s the main topic its placed
larger, bigger and bolder then the
other topics.
With cover line information below, the magazine designers
placed a black drop shadow on the text. By doing this it
allows you to read/spot the text better. This also allows
everything to contrast better with the rest of the front cover.
With the parts placed red, they're placed red because then it
adds more colour to the style of this certain front cover and
by choosing the colour red it then links with the masthead
and the colour scheme as a whole. Also the use of red to
attract you to more of the important information such as '20
years on' that instantly lets you know what time and a rough
idea of the subjects involved. Finally of course red is so
commonly used because its one colour attracts the human
eye the most.

8. The cover lines used with this front cover, I
can firstly spot that with the names of the
artists or topics are placed in a bold font. The
reason why they will have done this is due to
them placing in some text hierarchy and also
they’re the focus which will attract fans of the
artists to purchase the magazine. If someone is
interested enough to notice or look at the cover
lines their focus after the bold text will then
lead their eyes down to what information will
given within the magazine. Then that leads
back into the hierarchy method. The font used
here and most of their covers is a serif font. I
reason they use a serif font could be linked in
with them being a very classy magazine. They
have been going for a while so they will like to
present themselves as a good classic image. I
say this because serif is an older font and is
seen as a classic font.

9. On the left side of the double page spread is a image of the band/topic. The image will be relative to what the subject is
about, if its where the interview took place. This is commonly used through a lot of other magazines not just Rolling
Stones. Its normally at the beginning of the main topic, interview or story. It helps set the scene in a way for the reader
just a visual of who they're reading about or what they're reading about. The image has a mixed feeling about it. The
two ladies at the front are looking directly at the camera which indicates some on a personal level, with serious faces.
One of the ladies is holding a cup of tea and the way she is holding the tea indicates that she is sophisticated. On the
other had, Rolling Stones is an American magazine and the cup of tea could be an indication of nationality, English.
Then the mix feelings of the image come in because there's only one of the men in the middle looking towards of the
camera. This then makes a trifecta that is very central and could indicate that these three members are more well
known then the other two guys either side, hence why they're looking directly towards the camera. I guess the
confusion comes in with the last two members either side. The member on the right is lucking up towards the roof with
a bit of a smirk on his face. Then finally towards the left, the guy is pulling a certain face and looking down towards the
girls at the front. All of this gives me a sense of each personality and that’s what will be involved within the
story/interview.

10. The title being used for the topic is on a nice neat serif font. This again keeps a long with
the classic style of the magazine, linking with the front cover. Then the style of the image
and the fonts link together being that it’s a dated subject, back then around the 70s it all fits
in with the topic. The title is obviously place bigger then the other text below then that’s
slightly bigger then the text below that. This is done because the hierarchy of text, making it
all the text noticeable. With some of the words that are coloured differently then black is
due to them being more important words and the words need more attention. This is for
such things as names of places or statements. Then aside that the different coloured words
mean that colour also fits in with the colour scheme. The text is set out perfectly columns
which fits in with the layout of the page. Also there is a part of the text in the second
column where its placed in bold text. This indicates something important or something like
a quote/statement that is relevant to the subject being discussed. At the top of the page
there is just a nice pattern adding more to the page and helping the rest of the page fit in
with that rectangle shape.

11. Royal Blood album cover
The album was released on August 25th 2014
from the Warners label. This was their debut
album and shortly after release began to gain
a massive popularity. The band only
contains two guys from Brighton, Ben
Thatcher the drummer and joined by Mike
Kerr's bass guitar. The album is very heavy
and personal I haven't stopped listening to
the album since I heard it back in 2014.
The album cover to me is very creative and is
very appealing to look at. Dan Hillier was
the man who designed the front cover and
the work was called 'Falls' and he actually
got inspiration from Victorian etchings. The
album itself is seen as a very memorable
cover and it up there at the top as some of
the best covers. A lot of his work has massive
Victorian etching inspiration and he creates a
lot of different fascinating designs that you
can actually purchase on his website.

13. The actual base image is a very Edwardian style
probably taken from an Edwardian painting. On
the ladies clothes there is a lot of images of the
environment and vegetation. Both of these could
indicate to a target audience who are well
educated or more of a mature audience for their
music. Around the age of young adults or adults
in their thirties. This could in my eyes give off a
more historic or archaic vibe when both themed
are combined. The eyes are the only thing theft
from the face. This to me gives it more of a focus
of a personal feel. As its their debut album, it’s a
serious and personal project, looking directly
towards the viewer. The more obvious link
between the name of the band/album and the
imagery is because it says Royal Blood and there
is an image of someone who was of royal blood
in the Edwardian picture. The album is just the
name of the band so it just links perfectly.

14. The fonts used on the album cover are a serif
font. This again could mean that they are
appealing to a more mature audience or they
used the font to help fit in with the image they're
going for with the album.
With the imagery with the space and stars
coming from out of the head area, I feel
that it has possibly a few different
meanings. This could be example of what
the band are personality wise. Space is a
very dark and empty place, their could be
seen in that why due to how heavy it is
and the names of the song within the
album. Or again it might be a target
audience toward more educated people.
The space imagery is also outlined with
more of the more of the vegetation which
could link about to them as a band their
point of view.

15. Festival Poster
The colour scheme with Leeds Festival line up has always involved
yellow, red and black. That’s what the festival is now linked in with
Leeds is the yellow themed and the Reading festival as red. But both
line ups both involve all three colours and they just change the base
colours. All three colours together really make a nice vibe and are
very aesthetically pleasing. The red wording is the mastheads and is
used this way because red is a very eye catching colour. When
paired with the yellow background works perfectly and makes all
the poster stand out massively. The acts are all coloured in black and
just like I have said, yellow and black pair very well and makes
reading the poster easier which then makes people stick around and
read the rest of the poster. The main headliners are placed in bigger,
bolder texts with their own logos. Obviously the more well known
and popular artists/acts are placed at the top of the lists and are put
in the bigger bolder texts for people to notice them. This will then
attract more people to the festival. Another reasoning for the way its
all laid out that way is due to them adding in some hierarchy of
words, it helps everything look better within the layout and links
back to the importance of the information given.

16. The layout of the poster is very good and does seem
very neatly spread out. With a lot of the line up
designs they keep to the column layout. I think it
works and makes everything easy to see and
understand. The smaller text isn't the easiest to read
but you can still understand. To identify each stage
they're separated with a clear line to help you
understand what's going on.
The last thing I can touch on is the pattern on the
background. The pattern link in with the
logo/masthead so it sticks with the relevancy of the
design. The two arrows hasn’t always been their
design choice and has only been added over the
past few years. By adding in the arrows in a darker
yellow still fits in with colour scheme and work. It
helps lift the line up poster I feel a lift in design
which also makes it seem less bland and boring.
I have a strong feeling that this poster does appeal
to everything because from my own experience I've
seen who goes to the festival and who doesn’t. The
majority granted is young adults and adults but like
I said from my own experiences all ages attend
festivals and this festival specifically.

17. Band Posters
This poster is advertising a show from one of their tours in
Sheffield. The band obviously is the well known Blink-182.
They're a very punk rock enthusiastic and have always had
some very colourful imagery on their albums. The imagery
/cartoon drawn on this poster is confusing but that’s the
idea of Blink-182 and their punk styled personality they're
all very crazy. Even though I said that they use really
colourful stuff for their albums and projects. This poster
does use colours seen more as a down such as purple but
even then it comes across as vibrant. A theme across most of
their posters is death/no soul. This is seen on this poster as
a skeleton magician but with other posters there are
references in a cartoon way of them having no heart or
hearts being stabbed. This could either be a link with their
own personally feelings/life or it links back to with their
music. A theme that game into this tour and these posters
was the reoccurring images of rabbits. Even though the
rabbits don’t actually mean anything to the band and has
meaning behind it, I think personally there is a small hidden
meaning with the reoccurring rabbit. Well because the band
come across very trippy and confusing, I thought of the
rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.

18. The fans are Alice and we listen to their music, Alice
follows the rabbit down the rabbit hole. Then it gives a
purpose for the rabbits and links in perfectly with Blink-
182s image.
Moving on from the rabbit the colour scheme used is very
nice and aesthetically pleasing to look at. Even though the
purple is used way more then the black and yellow but
due to its tone, the purple isn't overpowering at all. But
that’s just my opinion to some people it could be seen as
overpowered. With that tone of purple, the black
elements pair very well together to get a good base to the
poster. The third colour to me would the yellow as it isn't
used as much as the other two. The yellow really brings
the elements of the poster together in my opinion. It adds
in some nice variety as a brighter colour then the other
two. The yellow looks really nice outlining parts of the
skeleton, this like before just adds in more to the imagery
and elevates/improves the look of everything.
With the masthead/logo it isn't a specific font but its been
drawn and designed linking in with the trippy vibe.
Edited with smoke/fumes and liquefied edges of each
letter which gives off a slimy look. The dripping from the
letters add a nice touch to help it fit in with the rest of the
poster. It’s the same again with the cover lines towards
the bottom of the page under the skeleton, both fonts
have the same style just falling onto a black background.
Overall I feel the poster works really and does the job
perfectly.

19. Q magazine
The Q magazine is a music magazine
which talks about music and artists with
all the latest up to date news. It likes to
keep you updated with the modern day
music industry/topics. Like most
magazines it is bi-monthly. Q's goal is to
just deliver the best up to date news
within music and they can just be the
map on your journey to find that
content. Q magazines first issue was
published in October 1986 for just £1.10.
The publisher of the magazine is Bauer
media group and the magazine is one of
the top UK magazines.

20. This is Q's media pack. Its shows you very clearly the
demographic which is 77%, median age 39 and the
employment is 82%. I picked out these three elements
because these three elements are the bits I've been
focusing on for my own target audience. Age wise its
not anywhere near what I am trying to aim for as I'm
wanting to appeal to the young adults not middle age
audiences. Also with mine I'm wanting to appeal to all
genders so ideally again it doesn’t really back my ideas
too well but it isn't that bad. The only part that backs up
my target audience is the employment. I want my
products to appeal to people who can afford my
product which would make sense to keep sales up. But
because I'm looking for a younger audience not as
many will be as employed as the middle aged audience.
I am wanting to add in festival information, which
backs up the percentage of people who go to gigs.
Overall I can still think about some elements to try and
appeal to my specific target audience.

21. For the base image of this front
cover, it all seems very creative
but such a simple concept. The
image itself is defiantly studio
produced. You tell by the
lighting on each other their
faces along side the shadowing.
You can also tell with the red
gaze around them but it isn't
obvious because that could be
added on a photo taken out of
a studio. The lighting is very
central and only really catches
two members of the band,
possibly indicating that those
two are the more well known
or preferred members. Whilst
the other two are more covered
in the red gaze with only tiny
bit of the lighting gracing their
faces. Another way you could
tell is the positioning of the
four, two to the center and two
placed at both sides. The topic
within the magazine could be
judged on being personal and
to the fans because of their
general look of all four
is looking directly towards the
camera. Also you get a feeling
of what their personality is like
by just looking at their
positioning and facial
expressions.
When it comes to the
colour scheme, I think its
simple but very relevant. I
say simple because its
mainly red but dots of
white and yellow. But
having a mainly red front
cover isn't a negative
thing because of how eye
catching it has become
compared other
magazines on the shelves.
Another reasoning for the
red apart from it being a
traditional colour for the
magazine, it links in with
the topic. Roses are red
and the main topic just
happens to be about The
Stone Roses which helps
piece the cover together.

22. Something that I didn’t really notice
straight away but once looking with
detail and concentration that there are
cracks almost like glass on the lens of the
camera. I thought and couldn’t figure it
out why their would be a cracked lens
but I then thought the line and cracks are
more like stone cracks. That’s where
there is the other connection for the name
of the band. Two elements of two words
are added to the front in a unique way.

23. The masthead/logo is a very simple one. Just one letter
'Q' in a very nice serif font. This indicates a sense of class
and that the magazine company like to stay to their nice
sophisticated roots. The serif font indicates that the
magazine are well educated within the magazine world
and give off a very nice professional feel. The red and
white combo is their style and have stuck to the design
for the majority of each cover. Its become a very
recognizable masthead. Like I have mentioned multiple
times the red and white work very well, very noticeable
and aesthetically pleasing. With the 'Q' being covered
isn't always a bad design fault, with most of the top dog
magazines do this where they have some images slightly
cover up a bit of their masthead. This gives an instant
message saying that because of how recognizable it is
they don’t need to show all of their masthead because
people will know which magazine it is.

24. With the more important writing, its always placed in a white colour just like the
masthead, the main article title and cover lines. This is because it keep the whole
theme going and keeps everything contrasting perfectly. The odd colours standing
out are the yellow and blue parts. There are normally examples like this and its done
to help point out relevant information or important facts relating to certain topics.
For the dates given relating to the band and then that little blue circle also letting you
know an artists LP being reviewed. It almost acts like an add on and a another way
of persuading customers. The fonts used here are sans serifs, the reasoning behind
this to me its more of a modern font used in the present day which then relates to the
band with '30 years on: How they changed the world' bringing the topic to present
day.

25. With the picture on the first page
of the two is a nice close up shot
probably taken within a studio.
You can tell by the background
and the colour changes within
the photo but again it all could
have been edited after being
taken somewhere out of the a
studio. But the lighting within
the photo is too good to be not
from a studio edit. The choice of
red to is to match the colour
scheme but I also get the feeling
it’s a hidden meaning/telling
you what the topic will have two
sides to it. Hence the colour
change of half and half. The close
up is maybe to emphasizes the
seriousness of his emotions
within the topic that has been
written.
The writing on the bottom right corner is coloured red
again to fit in with the colour scheme and it also
contrasts really well on the black t-shirt. The font is a serif
font and keeps a nice classic feel to a classic topic.

26. The large 'J' directly in the middle of the second page is placed there for multiple reasons.
First of all it relates to the topic of Jay-Z, and how he sometimes can be referred to as 'J'.
Secondly, the 'J' is placed in red which then stays in with the colour scheme of the
magazine. The red also contrast well with the rest of the page allowing you to still read
what the words say clearly. The colouring fitting in with the colour scheme is one side
but then its to help you make easy links with multiple bits of information, colour coding
helps people know which bit is which. The title above the 'J' its nicely placed as if its
sitting/resting on top. The positioning of title is very central and fits with the layout of
the page. The colour scheme like I mentioned before, colour coding. I do believe the font
used looks like a serif but what a more modern feel to the look. The reasoning of this
because of the subject and topic, a classic legend with a classic style attitude.
The text/information given on
the topic is perfectly p,aced in
columns which sets in wit hthe
laylut of the certain type of
double page spread. The page
numbers and masthead/logo
placed under the area of text in
the corners, which is a very
appropriate for the
professional look.

27. Existing Products
summary
From all the existing products I have looked at, I think ice done a good job with all
my choices. They're close to something I want to create and have been a good eye
opener for inspiration. All front covers I chose have given me ideas and I guess tips
in how I may create my layout. I got two double page spread the same style which
could be a negative because I didn't explore anything different but I might not even
try or want to create something different then that. Then to get some influence I
wanted to do look at poster within the music industry and to see how the best do it
and it really did help and began a lot of thinking along with mental planning. Finally
I had to at least look at a CD cover and especially a creative/artistic one. This in my
eyes will try give me that boost to try something really artistic and stretch my talents.
Which then will give me a better chance at a higher grade.

Personally I would like to read exclusive content that couldn’t find in other similar magazines such as interviews and profiles.
2. Do you prefer a nice simple front cover or a front cover that has a lot of images/cover lines?
I think it depends on the content of the magazine. I prefer simpler covers with not a lot of tag lines than a large amount of text on the page.
3. With music posters, do you prefer seeing the actual band or one of their album covers?
I prefer to see the actual band on the poster as I think this humanises the band to fans however I think this is variable with the bands personal
image.
4. When it comes to Album covers, do you like seeing more artistic covers other then studio based designed
covers?
I prefer unique artistic covers that represent the band and the musical content.
5. Do you like to see different designs with deluxe versions of album covers such as a colour change?
It’s a good thing to offer more on deluxe and collectible editions of albums as it’s a good selling point and is good for fans.
6. With festival posters, do you like more nicely laid out columns or a different messy information such as a
Parklife poster?
I feel that the layout is an important thing for a festival poster as it makes it easier to read but a more creative way of layouts can be good.
7. When you read a double page spread what kinds of layout do you like to see? and why?
I like columns as they show information such as dates and times.

New artists, to find new upcoming artists and music.

Simple imagery and text but important info.

Seeing the actual band because otherwise it just looks like a bigger version of the album and you need a variety of imagery.
4. When it comes to Album covers, do you like seeing more artistic covers other then studio based designed
Covers?
I like seeing studio based covers because you can use lighting effectively.
5. Do you like to see different designs with deluxe versions of album covers such as a colour change?
Yes so you can notice a difference clearly.
6. With festival posters, do you like more nicely laid out columns or a different messy information such as a
Parklife poster?
Nicely laid out, so you can see clearly all the information displayed.
7. When you read a double page spread what kinds of layout do you like to see? and why?
An even ratio of text to pictures, so it looks easier to read and isn't just blocks of text, which would be very boring.

1. If you were to read a music magazine what would you like to read about? And why?
I would like to read about up and coming musicians as I feel it is important to have an understanding of the way the music industry is
growing and changing. I would also like to read some reviews on new albums and songs and I enjoy hearing other peoples reactions to
specific tracks.
2. Do you prefer a nice simple front cover or a front cover that has a lot of images/coverlines?
I prefer a simple front cover as I feel it looks more professional than a front cover that has been over saturated with headlines and images. I
feel that simple front covers are very modern and sleek.
3. With music posters, do you prefer seeing the actual band or one of their album covers?
I like a mix of the two. I feel it would be appropriate to have a poster of an album cover if they are releasing a new album in the near future
or have just released an album and I feel posters wit the actual band would fit well for the other times.
4. When it comes to Album covers, do you like seeing more artistic covers other then studio based designed
covers?
I much prefer artistic covers for albums especially when it is by someone who is very creative. I feel by having an artistic album cover it
further emphasizes the artists creativity.
5. Do you like to see different designs with deluxe versions of album covers such as a colour change?
Yes, I feel it is important to differentiate between standard and deluxe editions as it is a way of show more gratitude toward the fans as you
have acknowledged the fact they have spent more money on your album.
6. With festival posters, do you like more nicely laid out columns or a different messy information such as a
Parklife poster?
I prefer festivals posters that are more laid out such as the Leeds fest poster as it is much easier to get the information you want from it. I do
however like the overall vibe from the Parklife poster more than the Leeds fest poster so if you can find a balance between the creativity from
the park life poster and the usability from the Leeds fest poster I feel that would be very good.
7. When you read a double page spread what kinds of layout do you like to see? and why?
I like a good balance of pictures and text. Personally I'd say a half and half split between pictures and images and spreading the text out into
multiple columns across the DPS is a good layout as it splits up the text and makes it less over facing.

1. If you were to read a music magazine what would you like to read about? And why ?
About music I am interested in, mostly hip-hop, and about interesting things I might not know if I don't read it.
2. Do you prefer a nice simple front cover or a front cover that has a lot of images/coverlines?
Simple main parts but include a lot of side stories.
3. With music posters, do you prefer seeing the actual band or one of their album covers?
Either I think both work well.
4. When it comes to Album covers, do you like seeing more artistic covers other then studio based designed
Covers?
More artistic, means they've put more in work wise.
5. Do you like to see different designs with deluxe versions of album covers such as a colour change?
Yes it would give someone more of a reason to buy it.
6. With festival posters, do you like more nicely laid out columns or a different messy information such as a
Parklife poster?
Messy such as a parklife poster, as it can surprise you once you see certain acts you might not have seen before.
7. When you read a double page spread what kinds of layout do you like to see? and why?
Something simplistic design wise as otherwise it may be too messy of a design and people might not want to read as it seems like too much.

32. Interview Summary
For the first question, I got around the response from the four people I asked in my interviews.
They responded with wanting to know new music and artist within their favourite genres. I
can agree with subject like this because if you have a real interest in music then this is a perfect
way to keep up to date and find some new artists you may like. Then a final over look of
someone wanting the interview side of content which I also like to see because then you can
read about relevant information from people who are in the industry.
The second question had a full house of the same answers and that was that they prefer the
more simplistic styled front cover because of how they look more professional and look nicer
then a big detailed front cover with a lot going on. I mean I agree with what they say with
their responses but on the other hand my personal preference I really like seeing an artistic
styled front cover that really draws your attention. This is also a possibility because of me
having a longer production period. With my third question it was a nice mixture of them all
agreeing with preferring to see the actual band then one of their album covers. But they also
said it could work either way apart from one person mentioning that it would just look like
one massive album cover. I can agree with all points given back to me but it all depends how
everything is designed. Three against one for question four. The majority are agreeing that
they like more artistic styled album cover, their reasoning behind it all is that the album cover
can express and show what the band is like within their personality. Then on the other side for
the one person who preferred more studio based designs gave a reasoning that you could
work with lighting better. For me that isn't a strong enough answer and I personally prefer
more artistic designs because how much creative it is.

33. For question five it was a complete agreement all round
that they do enjoy seeing other version of magazines such
as deluxe versions. This then gives me some really nice
flexibility when designing my magazines. Such as prizes,
add on music information (exclusive) and changing of
colours and designs. With the second last question, for a
festival poster they all again agreed on that a nice lay out
is better due to being able to read everything easily. I like
either one but I can agree with their feedback. For the
final question, the same theme was coming from
everyone mentioning how they like a nice ratio of text to
images. I feel the some as it doesn’t get bore or bland to
read. This will give me some nice variety and options to
try design some nice work.

34. My target audience
My target audience this time round is really aimed at
young adults, ages between 18-25 and I did it this way
because I feel like I can relate to them style wise and
what topics would appeal the most. I want to be aiming
at a nice decent product for middle class people who
either are still in education or have a full time job. This
means I'm wanting to appeal to people who have that
spending money on affording little things such as my
products. I don’t want to appeal to a specific gender, I
would like my products appeal to everyone and mainly
people who enjoy listening to bands all round those
genres. Also having to appeal to all genders gives me
more freedom but will be a decent task to see how I will
make it work with colours and imagery. I guess it will
come down to genres.

I wanted to begin with a nice text tutorial because a
masthead is such an important part of a magazine,
its what a amazing is recognized for. By watching
and learning from this tutorial I could possibly grab
some really good inspiration for the creation of my
own style. This specific tutorial shows you how to
create a really nice 3D text. This is fitting as well
because drop down shadow effects are used
constantly for mastheads.
To begin this process is to set out the page and the correct setting for this tutorial. To get the example or when you're trying to
copy, is to follow sections like this exact so your end result is close to example given. Within the video there isn't an exact font
given but the font the person is using is AmyMale. I can image this method will work with most fonts similar to AmyFonts. Just
type in a word whatever word but in the example its 'Text'. By leaving the base layer and creating a copy of that layer, this is
where you begin with a small paint brush to create the lines for the dripping effect. After messing around with how you want
your dripping lines then you move onto the gradient tool. By clicking from the top left of the first 'T' to the bottom right of the
second 'T', that’s what will start the process of that nice multicoloured galaxy effect within the text itself. The 3D part to the
design comes in with the 3D extrusion from selected layer tool. With this, its how you'll get the coloured drop shadows and 3D
back. Again once you're happy with that, this tutorial shows rendering under the 3D from down box toward the top of the page.
This then makes everything look clean and gives off that nice coloured background. To improve the background it shows that the
hue/saturation tool works perfectly fine.

36. To finish off the 3D text tutorial and to really
get that nice galaxy pattern, all you have to do
is implement your own image off Google or a
website. Place the image over your text and
with a press of an Alt key combined with you
clicking in between the two layers the image
will be placed in the letters.

I wanted to have another text tutorial looked at
because it will help me with some variety and
creativity when it comes down to my
magazine/posters. If I don't use it for a
masthead it could be used for pop up cover lines
or even a logo for a band.
To begin the process, just like before make sure
you have the pre settings for the page layout
correct otherwise it wont turn out the way you
want it too. For this particular example it needs
to with pixels.
I feel with this example you need the exact font used within the tutorial otherwise it wont work as well, it is also
specified in the video with a circling motion form a mouse over the top of the font name. The font used is Ballpark
Weiner. With the words and lettering, there are three different layer for each word. By doing this you can edit them
individual instead of all three the same. Obviously once you're happy with the placement of each word then you will
have to group them. To get that blur and black 3D effect behind the righting, its all about adding a stroke onto two
different layers and moving one of them slightly off center from the original. The third layer of a stroke gives you that
nice white outline. To get that nice faded colouring with words, again it’s a gradient but not the tool it’s the overlay. It
involves just three colours of your choice. With the smaller details within the words, there is an inner shadow effect not
too strong but noticeable. Then for that white shine on the curves of the letter is just by using the pen tool.

38. In my eyes the next part is optional
for what I'm going to be doing
with my products but it’s the star
shine shapes surrounding the
words. To create the shining star
effects, it just involves circle shapes
just adjusting them in the way the
tutorial instructed.

I wanted to involve a cartoon styled tutorial due to
some inspiration I received from my existing
products. I can use this with posters and images with
my magazines, specifically to bands.
When beginning this process you need to have your
base image and then another blank layer on top. Then
you'll need the pen tool to click and drag around the
hair, this will make it easier when designing later on.
Once finishing the outlining of the hair it will also
have the coverage of the face.
You will have to make sure that you select your brush and make the hardness 100% with the necessary size you'll need. Once
you're happy with that you will go back to the pen tool to get a stroke path. That will outline it all in which colour needed. After
that its basically a rinse and repeat process because you will have to get all the facial features. It’s the same but depending which
facial feature the size of the brush with vary to get the best results. Once the more difficult strokes with the features completed its
time for the filling in and colouring. How to colour parts in, you need to involve the magic wand tool. This will help you select
which areas to fill wit the paint bucket but a little important trick to make sure all the edges are filled in, you need to head to select
at the top drop down, go down to modify and then expand by a few pixels to be safe. Just like before it will be a rinse and repeat
to fill in the rest of the face and features. Once everything has been coloured and filled with the paint bucket tool, you will need to
get another copy of the base image and place it on top of all the other layers. To get all the nice shadowing, it involves
desaturation to the image(black and white). After doing that its down to the filter gallery and the filter needed is the cut out filter
within the folder artist. The layer also needs to be on multiply. To make sure the colour and the features are all together, the top
layer where you just added the filter to needs a layer mask.

40. That then will make you need to invert the layer
mask, that will then bring you to mess around
with the curves and saturation of the image to
make sure you get the right colours. Apart from
some small detailing, that would be the end of
the tutorial. To say it’s a long tutorial, it’s a pretty
basic process and the end product is of high
quality.

From the tutorials I have managed to look at, I feel that they will be some good skills and
effects that will be very beneficial to my work. Even if I don’t copy these exactly with my
production they will and still have given me ideas and inspiration to create some very
high level work. With each tutorial I briefly explained why I picked each one but like I
have mentioned and through my own personal views, a good masthead is important.
With a masthead you can build an image with it, when people see your masthead they get
instantly taken in thought who your magazine or company represent. So I managed to get
two cool text tutorials down to give myself some more mix of creativity from what I
already have from the past two years. This will give me choices of mastheads, cover lines
and some creative logos. Because of some influences from past projects and existing
products, I felt like I wanted to be more creative image wise and take it to another level.
So I decided to get a more cartoon designed tutorial because they can be very effective if
used in the right way and I think they're a very popular design choice as well. This gives
me freedom to design whatever I want in that way.
Over all I have picked three designs that I like because they will give me some really
positive inspiration, otherwise what's the point in choosing products or tutorials that
don’t excite you with your production.

42. Availability/Cost
When it comes down to availability, I am going to involve people within my class so
depending on if they have time to come aside and depending if they turn up to
college. Other then depending on those factors the availability works really well
within my favour.
Cost wise and seeing which camera angles I'm going to be using I wont have to
purchase that many clothes. I already had an idea of having at least two caps which
could come to around £15 -£20 which I don’t mind paying because I can always reuse
them. Then for top wise, I was thinking for hoodies/denim jackets. I will have to look
for cheap prices and look within the right shops that could only come to about £30.
