2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

16. Academic History
• I have studied at York college since 2016-2019. In my first year of college the course I was
attending Information & creative technology level two. In that course it was filled with automated
systems, CAD, CAM, websites and a lot of programming. I found all of this very interesting and was
something new that I hadn’t learnt before. I found the programming side to the course very
challenging but kept along with it to achieve my highest grade possible. The end project that I had
to complete was to programme a robot with instructions. The robot was equipped with multiple
sensors so it knew when to turn or stop from a potential hazard. I would say as an end of year
project it was a lot of fun and rewarding to successfully complete the task. I ended up doing really
well in the course and came out with two distinctions and a merit. So persevering wit had work I
couldn’t have asked for any better grades which then set me up to move onto my second year.
Moving onto that second year I decided to change course to something that suited me better and
that course was a level three creative media.
17. Current Study
• From moving courses, my current study is a level three creative media course. My first year of the
two year course, I really didn’t know what to expect but was still very curious and excited to start.
For the first few months each class did rotations to learn each subject in the course. The three
subjects are print, video games and short films. I was given five weeks for each rotation to learn
and then create a product. Each product would be given a mark and feedback on what to work on
for next time. After finishing the rotations, I was given the choice to specialise in one of the
subjects and this was for our final grade to see if I Would get onto the second year of the course.
With some very good time management skills and god concentration I managed to complete the
task and I was pleased to find I achieved a merit for my effort. By securing a merit this gave me my
place on the second year and a good amount of UCAS points. Before the start of my second year
this course, I was full of confidence and belief that I can produce high level work. Of course this
year was going to be harder then the previous first year but because of my time management, I'm
more then confident that I wont struggle and hopefully achieve the highest grade possible. The
work at sometimes can seem a little overwhelming but doesn’t stop me from completing my work.
I have full belief in myself that I will achieve highly at the end of this level three course and I know
this will help set up the next step in my life.
18. The Future
• For a while I wasn’t sure on what I wanted to do with my future but with some thought I know Uni
would be ideal for me. I've asked friends and family about university and they said I should
consider it if I want to proceed in my future. I have always loved music and can't go on throughout
my day without constantly listening to music. So I have always known I want to be involved with
music for my job when I've left university. I know if I want the right skills to excel in my future area
of work then I'll need to go to university. The courses I have been looking at are music production
and music journalism. I feel like these subjects would be the key skills in getting my dream job.
19. Outside College
Outside of college I have a weekend job. I have been working at the same place for about three
years now and I've become a reliable hard working throughout the years. This place I work is a
café and is a well known establishment in its area. During any holidays I will work more
just weekend and will work more throughout the week. Over the years of working there, I have
become a good asset to the café and I have been told how I am a brilliant worker. I have a strong
belief that I may always have a place at the café and its something I enjoy. Whilst working at the
café, its given me a lot of experience of dealing with the general public and I know this will aid me
later on in life.
20. Conclusion
• I want to go to university because I feel that I'm ready for that higher level of education and
to expand my knowledge in the music industry. I know for a fact that University will give me
those skills to proceed successfully in life. I feel that I'm a good candidate because I work very
hard with my work and with my passion for music I'll want to get the highest grades
possible.
21. Introduction
• I want to go to University to study either a music production course or Music journalism. I
know at University I will gain the needed skills to proceed in those two areas and I don't seen
more beneficial choice then University.
