Problem Solving
By Tom Batty
Practical and Technical Problems
Camera
With my camera issues, I want to improve them by the time production comes around otherwise I will be
behind on getting satisfactory images. So my plan is to get hold of a camera and proceed to work on all the
camera angles. Those are Dutch, high and low angled, eye level and OTS. I know roughly how to take some
of these such as high and low angled shots but I want to get better for now and for future reference. This
will benefit me massively which will then lead to a good amount of variety.
After about 20 minutes with the camera I managed to go out and really practice some of the
issues I thought I was having. The images above are the better ones from the multiple shots I
took. I would say I took about 4 of each camera angles, this was just so I could get a good
beginning feel on how I need to be taking them. That is just something that should goes
without saying, it needs to be done otherwise you wont have to the choice of better results. I
mean its progress from the start of the course when I really didn’t know my way around a
camera. By doing this and going out with some hands on experience gives me some more
confidence towards my production. I feel like I will now get better results from my
photography, which will then make my editing on Photoshop a lot cleaner. Also in a time
scale way it will save me a load of time in production. I say this because I wont be messing
around trying to figure out the best ways to take each angle. I don’t think I have perfected
this at all but I know I will be getting more experience before production.
Whilst I was out working on my camera angles, I figured I would go more in depth with some of the camera
settings. I wanted to just scrape the surface a bit just while I had the time and the camera in my hands. All I
messed around with was the IOS settings within the camera because like I have mentioned previously I don’t
know my way around a camera or even what the camera can do. From testing it out I now know it helps with
the brightness depending on your location. So the higher the IOS on the camera is what you need for when
you're in a darker area with lower lighting. So that’s how you get a clearer image and then of course it’s the
other way for a lighter area with more lighting you will have to put a lower IOS to get the best results. For
some examples, you can see below the trial and error of me working out
by my self. These are only a few of the many I took but I also tried to
implement my camera angle practice to bring it all together. I feel that the
images I managed to collect and take were some good progress but still
need some more work to get the full potential.
Photoshop
With Photoshop the best way to learn and gain some nice necessary skills for now and future work.
The first tutorial I began to create was the 3D text.
This tutorial personally went well in my opinion. It isn't an exact
replica but I followed each step and still came out with a decent result. I
used a different font as I didn’t have it already installed on the mac I was
using. I didn’t go out of my way to go and find it and download it due to
the fact I didn’t think it would have made such a big impact on the look.
But to my surprise it did make the difference. This only became a
problem when it came to the stage of the 3D extrusion. It didn’t seem to
work that well with my font that I chose and it began to mess with the
colouring. With mine it was colouring everything in the wrong places which then was effecting the end product
at the end. Because of this, I didn’t choose the right colours which gave me that white and black background
instead of the nice blue faded background. That’s point of where it didn’t go exactly as planned and I don’t
remember missing any important steps for such a mess up but I might have done, so if I decide to replicate
something along the line of this I will try and follow everything exact. What I will defiantly have to do for next
time to get the best result is either get that exact font and download it or get a font very similar that it wouldn’t
make much difference but get the same results. I want to try this again because I'm a very big fan of this design
and want to actually use it within my design, because of how effective it is. So the m ore practice I get with it
and more of a feel will help massively when it comes to implementing it in my products.
This tutorial is by far my favourite out of every single one that I have attempted and its also one of the more
aesthetically pleasing, which is probably why I like it so much. Another reasoning behind me liking it so
much is that it really isn't a struggle to execute and comes off with an amazing look or style to my own
personal work. As you can see from my screen shots, the tutorial went really well and I replicated it almost
perfectly. I actually went and retrieved the font used within the video, just so I could get a good feel of the
style ands possibly use the font again later on within my work. I don’t think it would be really suitable for
something like my masthead but more of a logo for a band/festival posters. But with some tweaks this design
could come together with a really nice masthead design. I wish I messed about with different colour schemes
with this design, because I feel as long as they contrast well it can still bullt off that amazing finish. The
differences within thie original and mine, would be the spelling and the sparkle effects. The spelling is just
due to English and American spellings are different. In my opinion it doesn’t effect the shape and design in a
negeative way, it reallly only shuffles the wording to the opposite side. Then for the sparle effect I just made a
simple mistake and didn’t follow the tutorial correctly. I placed a circle in the middle of the cross over but in
the actual tutorial there is no circle. Apart from that its been a successful design.
This tutorial wasn’t the best and I pretty much failed poorly. Well its not too far off but could be way better
then my end result. I didn’t expect it to be as challenging but there was amssive factor of this. For my first
time attempting this style of design, I needed to pick something more simple with less detailing but instead I
ignored that and went big. The guy in the tutorial even warned me but I decided to ingore that, and the
results speak volumes. It was a lot of trial and error with me making mistakes with the stroke baths/making
sure I was outlining the correct areas. The big one was making sure I was colouring
the correct area. As soon as got rid of the background you can see that even though
I tried to expand the sopread of the paint bucket there ewas thin linings that didn’t
colour in correctly. I can say that I dod really want to involve this within my work
because I feel it can be used very effectivly if and when I get my head around it.
Once I've gotten comfortable with it and a few more practises behind me I will be
able to push the designs further to get some elevation within my work. For
example, I could use it for a music poster with some creative cartoon work. These
designs could also be used within a special version of a certain magazine.
This double exposure design is a nice simple but yet very effective
design but for someone who is just beginning with Photoshop I
wouldn’t recommend beginning with something such as this. I say
this just because of the terminology used and the guy presenting
goes through fast with the terminology. But besides that the tutroial
is interesting and very effective. It looks very nice and the multiple
ideas and option with this certain design is very good. I just copied
and replicated the tutorial but it really wouldnt be difficult to use
different imaging to suit my own genre. Persoanlly at the moment I
really don’t see myself implimenting it or using this within my work,
I just cant see it fitting in but it’s a very good back up for me if I end
up running out of ideas. I don’t think I messed up that much on this
certain one but maybe the odd mistake but easily corrected. I think to
help shape this certain design within my own work, I will need to
use different imagery relating to my music genre.
This final tutorial I manged to fit in before the deadline, is such a nice neon lighting effect that I know I
will definatly use within my work. It really can fit in anyhwere and its so effectivng to get a really nice
aesthetic look. The process just like the 'colour the full' text was simple and easy. Before beginning this
process I thought the neon light font was created by a simple paint brush but it was a genuine font
(saving a lot of time). With this tutorial I don’t think I made any mistakes and replicated it to near damn
perfect to the original. I messed up on the neon bars either side of the word 'shady', I think I made them
too bright. I went a bit heavy on the outer glow of the bars. But its such an easy tweak with lowering the
levels within the outer glow or just simply lowering the opacity of each bar. Going off that you really
cant mess up with thisd tutorial either and just like I have just mentioned its very easy to correct it in
which ever way you prefer it to be. Just like many other text desingns, you could easily get away with
another set of colours that go really well together to fit mine or you colour schemes.
Photoshop Tutorials summary
Over all I feel that I have chosen some really nice tutorials that can potentially elevate my work
massively. I feel like these have been some of the best I have chosen from throughout the two
year course. I say this because, the designs are very creative and are more advanced from the
work I was creating at the beginning of the course. I feel that I'm really going to get some really
good inspiration and work from these few design. From the start of the course I don’t think I
could've replicated the same work I can now. But I have given myself some nice options for
mastheads and logos to help shape my final work to its best. I have left myself some different
angles of creativity. Other then the text tutorials, I wanted to involve some nice image designs to
help my magazine and other products look like my own style which I hope will come together
as I want. Also I have tried to have some relevance to existing products from successful
magazine covers etc. I have done this just so my products will be recognised within the correct
genre.
Theoretical Problems
Studio
When it comes to the studio, the health and
safety side of things are very important. There
are multiple risks that could hurt or put people
in danger which means when I'm in the studio
there isn't any messing around, due to it being
my responsibility. The first obvious risk would
be the electrical equipment and loose wires that
could all lead to electrical shocks or even
tripping over which could lead to a banged head.
In ways to prevent this, make sure all loose wires
are tucked away, don’t try and move damaged
electrical equipment as they could be very
dangerous and finally to make sure I notify
someone of the technical issues. Another big one
not for me personally but for the peers that I
shall be acting as my band will be stood in front
of the studio lights. The studio light give off a
tone of heat after being stood in front of them for
a certain period of time. A good way of avoiding
this issue would be to make sure everyone has a
little break from them just to make sure they're
ok and not feeling ill. Make sure nobody is
actually staring directly at them due to them
damaging your eyes which could then leas to
head aches. A bit of an add onto the heat, would
be just avoid the lights if they have been on for a
while because if me or anyone touched one of
them it could lead to a very nasty burn.
Camera
Just like the studio side, I will go through the risks
of using the college camera. Also just like the studio
you have breifly touched up on the health and
safety side of things but not really in much detail.
The first obvious risk that I have already mentioned
is the handling if the camera and equipment. The
risk of dropping or not handling it correctly is a
massive problem which can lead to people
dropping and breaking the camera/lense. To
prevent this, I would say the more logical way
would be to make sure its comfortable at all time of
use and not anything too tricky. That will prevent
the slipping of your grip whilst using it. I think a
good link that could be made with this is if you
have your camera in a comfortable grip and have it
safely round your neck, then you wont be leaving it
unateneded which will then prevent the
camera/equipment being stolen. I will just have to
make sure someone I know is always with the
camera. The final big risk of using a camera in my
eyes would be when using the camera and the
viewfinder. This could be easily done by just
tripping on something hurting yourself and
smashing the camera. So I good way of preventing
this is know your surroundings and area before
taking pictures and just make it all safe.

  • 7. Camera With my camera issues, I want to improve them by the time production comes around otherwise I will be behind on getting satisfactory images. So my plan is to get hold of a camera and proceed to work on all the camera angles. Those are Dutch, high and low angled, eye level and OTS. I know roughly how to take some of these such as high and low angled shots but I want to get better for now and for future reference. This will benefit me massively which will then lead to a good amount of variety. After about 20 minutes with the camera I managed to go out and really practice some of the issues I thought I was having. The images above are the better ones from the multiple shots I took. I would say I took about 4 of each camera angles, this was just so I could get a good beginning feel on how I need to be taking them. That is just something that should goes without saying, it needs to be done otherwise you wont have to the choice of better results. I mean its progress from the start of the course when I really didn’t know my way around a camera. By doing this and going out with some hands on experience gives me some more confidence towards my production. I feel like I will now get better results from my photography, which will then make my editing on Photoshop a lot cleaner. Also in a time scale way it will save me a load of time in production. I say this because I wont be messing around trying to figure out the best ways to take each angle. I don’t think I have perfected this at all but I know I will be getting more experience before production.
  • 8. Whilst I was out working on my camera angles, I figured I would go more in depth with some of the camera settings. I wanted to just scrape the surface a bit just while I had the time and the camera in my hands. All I messed around with was the IOS settings within the camera because like I have mentioned previously I don’t know my way around a camera or even what the camera can do. From testing it out I now know it helps with the brightness depending on your location. So the higher the IOS on the camera is what you need for when you're in a darker area with lower lighting. So that’s how you get a clearer image and then of course it’s the other way for a lighter area with more lighting you will have to put a lower IOS to get the best results. For some examples, you can see below the trial and error of me working out by my self. These are only a few of the many I took but I also tried to implement my camera angle practice to bring it all together. I feel that the images I managed to collect and take were some good progress but still need some more work to get the full potential.
  • 9. Photoshop With Photoshop the best way to learn and gain some nice necessary skills for now and future work. The first tutorial I began to create was the 3D text. This tutorial personally went well in my opinion. It isn't an exact replica but I followed each step and still came out with a decent result. I used a different font as I didn’t have it already installed on the mac I was using. I didn’t go out of my way to go and find it and download it due to the fact I didn’t think it would have made such a big impact on the look. But to my surprise it did make the difference. This only became a problem when it came to the stage of the 3D extrusion. It didn’t seem to work that well with my font that I chose and it began to mess with the colouring. With mine it was colouring everything in the wrong places which then was effecting the end product at the end. Because of this, I didn’t choose the right colours which gave me that white and black background instead of the nice blue faded background. That’s point of where it didn’t go exactly as planned and I don’t remember missing any important steps for such a mess up but I might have done, so if I decide to replicate something along the line of this I will try and follow everything exact. What I will defiantly have to do for next time to get the best result is either get that exact font and download it or get a font very similar that it wouldn’t make much difference but get the same results. I want to try this again because I'm a very big fan of this design and want to actually use it within my design, because of how effective it is. So the m ore practice I get with it and more of a feel will help massively when it comes to implementing it in my products.

  • 11. This tutorial is by far my favourite out of every single one that I have attempted and its also one of the more aesthetically pleasing, which is probably why I like it so much. Another reasoning behind me liking it so much is that it really isn't a struggle to execute and comes off with an amazing look or style to my own personal work. As you can see from my screen shots, the tutorial went really well and I replicated it almost perfectly. I actually went and retrieved the font used within the video, just so I could get a good feel of the style ands possibly use the font again later on within my work. I don’t think it would be really suitable for something like my masthead but more of a logo for a band/festival posters. But with some tweaks this design could come together with a really nice masthead design. I wish I messed about with different colour schemes with this design, because I feel as long as they contrast well it can still bullt off that amazing finish. The differences within thie original and mine, would be the spelling and the sparkle effects. The spelling is just due to English and American spellings are different. In my opinion it doesn’t effect the shape and design in a negeative way, it reallly only shuffles the wording to the opposite side. Then for the sparle effect I just made a simple mistake and didn’t follow the tutorial correctly. I placed a circle in the middle of the cross over but in the actual tutorial there is no circle. Apart from that its been a successful design.
  • 12. This tutorial wasn’t the best and I pretty much failed poorly. Well its not too far off but could be way better then my end result. I didn’t expect it to be as challenging but there was amssive factor of this. For my first time attempting this style of design, I needed to pick something more simple with less detailing but instead I ignored that and went big. The guy in the tutorial even warned me but I decided to ingore that, and the results speak volumes. It was a lot of trial and error with me making mistakes with the stroke baths/making sure I was outlining the correct areas. The big one was making sure I was colouring the correct area. As soon as got rid of the background you can see that even though I tried to expand the sopread of the paint bucket there ewas thin linings that didn’t colour in correctly. I can say that I dod really want to involve this within my work because I feel it can be used very effectivly if and when I get my head around it. Once I've gotten comfortable with it and a few more practises behind me I will be able to push the designs further to get some elevation within my work. For example, I could use it for a music poster with some creative cartoon work. These designs could also be used within a special version of a certain magazine.
  • 13. This double exposure design is a nice simple but yet very effective design but for someone who is just beginning with Photoshop I wouldn’t recommend beginning with something such as this. I say this just because of the terminology used and the guy presenting goes through fast with the terminology. But besides that the tutroial is interesting and very effective. It looks very nice and the multiple ideas and option with this certain design is very good. I just copied and replicated the tutorial but it really wouldnt be difficult to use different imaging to suit my own genre. Persoanlly at the moment I really don’t see myself implimenting it or using this within my work, I just cant see it fitting in but it’s a very good back up for me if I end up running out of ideas. I don’t think I messed up that much on this certain one but maybe the odd mistake but easily corrected. I think to help shape this certain design within my own work, I will need to use different imagery relating to my music genre.

  • 15. This final tutorial I manged to fit in before the deadline, is such a nice neon lighting effect that I know I will definatly use within my work. It really can fit in anyhwere and its so effectivng to get a really nice aesthetic look. The process just like the 'colour the full' text was simple and easy. Before beginning this process I thought the neon light font was created by a simple paint brush but it was a genuine font (saving a lot of time). With this tutorial I don’t think I made any mistakes and replicated it to near damn perfect to the original. I messed up on the neon bars either side of the word 'shady', I think I made them too bright. I went a bit heavy on the outer glow of the bars. But its such an easy tweak with lowering the levels within the outer glow or just simply lowering the opacity of each bar. Going off that you really cant mess up with thisd tutorial either and just like I have just mentioned its very easy to correct it in which ever way you prefer it to be. Just like many other text desingns, you could easily get away with another set of colours that go really well together to fit mine or you colour schemes.

  • 17. Photoshop Tutorials summary Over all I feel that I have chosen some really nice tutorials that can potentially elevate my work massively. I feel like these have been some of the best I have chosen from throughout the two year course. I say this because, the designs are very creative and are more advanced from the work I was creating at the beginning of the course. I feel that I'm really going to get some really good inspiration and work from these few design. From the start of the course I don’t think I could've replicated the same work I can now. But I have given myself some nice options for mastheads and logos to help shape my final work to its best. I have left myself some different angles of creativity. Other then the text tutorials, I wanted to involve some nice image designs to help my magazine and other products look like my own style which I hope will come together as I want. Also I have tried to have some relevance to existing products from successful magazine covers etc. I have done this just so my products will be recognised within the correct genre.
  • 18. Theoretical Problems Studio When it comes to the studio, the health and safety side of things are very important. There are multiple risks that could hurt or put people in danger which means when I'm in the studio there isn't any messing around, due to it being my responsibility. The first obvious risk would be the electrical equipment and loose wires that could all lead to electrical shocks or even tripping over which could lead to a banged head. In ways to prevent this, make sure all loose wires are tucked away, don’t try and move damaged electrical equipment as they could be very dangerous and finally to make sure I notify someone of the technical issues. Another big one not for me personally but for the peers that I shall be acting as my band will be stood in front of the studio lights. The studio light give off a tone of heat after being stood in front of them for a certain period of time. A good way of avoiding this issue would be to make sure everyone has a little break from them just to make sure they're ok and not feeling ill. Make sure nobody is actually staring directly at them due to them damaging your eyes which could then leas to head aches. A bit of an add onto the heat, would be just avoid the lights if they have been on for a while because if me or anyone touched one of them it could lead to a very nasty burn. Camera Just like the studio side, I will go through the risks of using the college camera. Also just like the studio you have breifly touched up on the health and safety side of things but not really in much detail. The first obvious risk that I have already mentioned is the handling if the camera and equipment. The risk of dropping or not handling it correctly is a massive problem which can lead to people dropping and breaking the camera/lense. To prevent this, I would say the more logical way would be to make sure its comfortable at all time of use and not anything too tricky. That will prevent the slipping of your grip whilst using it. I think a good link that could be made with this is if you have your camera in a comfortable grip and have it safely round your neck, then you wont be leaving it unateneded which will then prevent the camera/equipment being stolen. I will just have to make sure someone I know is always with the camera. The final big risk of using a camera in my eyes would be when using the camera and the viewfinder. This could be easily done by just tripping on something hurting yourself and smashing the camera. So I good way of preventing this is know your surroundings and area before taking pictures and just make it all safe.
