2. Plants which grow beside water often rely on
water to transport their seeds for them. This
process is called hydrochory.
Characteristics
The fruits of most water plants have
bouyant, waterproof coverings that allow
them to float.
They may produce light seeds which float,
or there may be fluff that helps buoyancy.

3. The leaves can be up to 14
centimeters long and have a
stem, they are green margins,
with parallel veins, light wavy
and covered with short hairs
that form like the structure of a
basket that trap air bubbles,
increasing the buoyancy of
plant.

4. Flower: Regular (actinomorphic). Three separate large
white petals. Three sepals, separated, smaller than the
petals. Stem of the inflorescence shorter than the
leaves, rigid, flattened, and with curved teeth along the
edges
Leaves held in a rosette. Petiole-free, lanceolate to linear,
5-15 mm (0.2-0.6 in.) Wide, 15-40 cm (6-16 in.) Long,
rigid. Jagged blade edges, tooth tips with a spine that
curves upward. In the fall, roots up to 50 cm (20 in.) Long
wilt. The rosette bud sinks to the bottom, where it spends
the winter.

6. Coconut
A coconut has a smooth outer rind, a
fibrous husk and a stony central layer
pitted whit 3 small “eyes” of soft tissue,
through one of which a young shoot and
root will emerge at germination.
The rich supply of food and water I the
coconut enables it to last for a long time
on its watery journey.

7. LOTUS
The fruit is a conical-shaped
pod filled with seeds, each
seed in its own socket or hole.
When the seeds ripen, they
become loose and when the
pod tips down, the seeds are
released into the water.
some species have pinnate
leaves with more than 15
leaflets

8. Tree up to 15m tall, but in Singapore
usually shorter. Bark fissured, flaky, grey
to brown with lenticels. Produces a white
sap.
Leaves (12-30cm long) oval, dark green
and glossy, held in dense spirals at the
tips of the twigs. Flowers (about 5cm)
white appearing at the tips of the twigs.
Fruits (5-7cm) spherical or ovoid, with 1-
2 seeds. First green then pink, rosy
purple and finally black. The fruits float
are dispersed by water.
