Extended focused assessment with sonography for trauma (eFAST) uses ultrasound to detect blood or air in the potential spaces of the abdomen and chest in trauma patients. The potential spaces in the abdomen that eFAST evaluates are the hepatorenal pouch, splenorenal pouch, and pelvic space. In the chest, eFAST examines the pericardial space and pleural space. A normal eFAST shows no fluid or air in any of these potential spaces, while a positive eFAST reveals the presence of blood or air, indicating internal bleeding or injury requiring further evaluation and treatment.
