Personal Profit s Crucial Role in Defining a Human Being
Personal Profit s Crucial Role in Defining a Human Being
College. The word brings to mind the struggle of being accepted to a top tier university. The intense
competition seen in high schools around the country to earn a seat in prestigious schools can
consume student s lives to such a degree as to corrupt their sense of place. The competition drives
students to commit uncharacteristic and almost unconceivable actions. Many cheat their way into
college by manipulating affirmative action and as a result intentionally sabotage a peer s chances of
succeeding. This pursuit highlights a false sense of entitlement among students and fosters a hostile
feeling toward peers. A similar situation is seen throughout many works of literature such as Heart
of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad, where a mariner named Marlow, who uncovers the mysteries and
horrors of the African interior, seeks to meet an esteemed figure named Kurtz. When Marlow
discovers Kurtz s true nature and actions, he realizes the extreme degree of corruptness the human
race possesses. In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad suggests that humans only seek personal profit,
shown through character relationships between Marlow and the African natives, the manager, and
Kurtz.
Heart of Darkness depicts the corrupt nature of humanity by illustrating Africans who sold out their
own race to Europeans and enslaved them solely for the personal gain of not becoming a slave
themselves. When Conrad originally visits the Outer Station,

Erikson s Stages Of Psychosocial Development
Rachel Getting Married is a movie about a drug addict who s coming home from rehab to attend
her sister s wedding. The main character s name is Kim. In the movie, she is shown to have
many issues going on, ranging from an incomplete stage of Erikson s to symptoms of depression.
Throughout the movie, she goes through many emotional turmoils and drama, which changes her
behavior. Section A: Erikson s stages of Psychosocial Development includes trust vs. mistrust,
autonomy vs shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, competence vs. inferiority, identity vs. role
confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, and integrity vs. despair. All of
these stages serve as a foundation for the next, and as a basis for how their personality will
develop. In the movie, Rachel Getting Married, Kim shows a lot of mistrust towards people,
especially her family, which may have started when she was a baby to the age of one. Trust vs.
mistrust is when infants learn basic trust for parents. When they see that their basic needs have
been fulfilled they start to trust, rely and depend on that parent. Unfortunately, it might ve been
that Kim has an incomplete stage because Kim s mother hasn t been around. Without her mother
being around, their wasn t a mother figure in her life, therefore she doesn t trust people as much.
This could serve as to why she turned to drugs as a source of releasing her stress. Since her mother
wasn t around as a baby, it s safe to assume that Kim s

The Improper Use Of Technology In Education
The traditionalist approach to school, coupled with the rise in technology, has led to a bitter rivalry.
The use of technology continues to catapult the world into a new age while hopelessly dragging
along the skeptics that resist the change. Innovation in education continues to prove essential in
keeping students engaged and attentive. When educators employ the true benefits of technologyit
proves to be highly effective in furthering their ability to teach. However, the improper use of
technology has shown to distract and negatively affect students on their path to success.
In the mid 19 hundreds, with the turn of the century on the horizon, many schools quickly ran to fill
their halls with all the latest and greatest technology. A brilliant example of this is when Stanford
University built a state of the art facility in 1967 designed to streamline the lecture process. The
innovation involved adding a row of buttons to each desk that could be used to answer in class
questions. In theory, this technology would revolutionize the way professors teach and give
students the ability to tailor the lecture speed to meet their needs. However, the technology quickly
lost popularity and, while it remains in the lecture hall, it has not been used in decades. Many
professors who lecture in that classroom point out the technology as an example of why innovation
is not always the wisest avenue. This illustrates the common problem of buying extravagant
technology without consulting the

Consequences And Effects Of Grade Inflation In Schools
Since the day schools were established, society depends on them to determine the capabilities
and skills of its members. For schools to fulfill this role many evaluation mechanisms were
introduced, and evaluation based on grades was one of them. Undoubtedly nowadays, grades are
the main factor that determines and shapes the academic future of individuals and therefore their
professional careers. Furthermore, the grades that schools yield by the end of each academic
year, represent a priceless resource for decision makers and labour market to implement and
improve strategies. Therefore, if these data presented by schools and universities are inaccurate,
misleading, or exaggerated, society as a whole, and job market in particular will face serious
consequences. In the early 1960s, a phenomenon that reduces the informational value of the grading
system in schools and universities has occurred. This phenomenon is referred to as GradeInflation,
which can be defined according to The New York Times as the tendency to award progressively
higher academic grades for work that would have received lower grades in the past . In this paper
the causes, consequences, and workable solutions to this phenomenon will be discussed.
Students in schools that experience grade inflation suffer from many severe consequences because
of the policy that is followed by their schools. After graduation, students with inflated grades will be
placed in competitive and relatively difficult

An Explanation Of Individualized Medicine
The paper begins with the story of a five year old boy, a five year old boy who is barely clinging
to life. He is so malnourished that he looks half his age. After a plethora of operations,
examinations, and hospitalizations, doctors still had no idea what was wrong with him, that is,
until geneticist Elizabeth Worthey began studying his DNA. Worthey began with the conventional
and finished with the unconventional. In order to discover what was wrong with the boy, Worthey
mapped out the genes that determine the protein his cells make. This essentially allowed her to
pinpoint the mutation that was causing the boy s medical problems. This is one of the first
examples of individualized medicine, which uses the genome of the patient to... Show more content

During the same year as Franklin s discovery, Watson and Crick determined that the chemical
rungs that join the two helical strands are made up of two base pairs. The two base pairs are
adenine (A) thymine (T) or guanine (G) cytosine (C). They also realized that the order of those
two chemical base pairs that joined the two helical strands spelled out the genes and determined
the variation of traits in all living organisms. In addition to their already impressive discovery, they
also realized that the two helical strands could be separated for copying, which facilitated the
passing on of genetic information between each generation. A few years following this discovery
by Watson and Crick, biochemists Marshall Nirenberg and Har Gobind Khorana determined the
reason for genetic mutations. They occur when the sequence of the chemical bases on the DNA that
determine the order of amino acids that link to create a protein is incorrect. These mutations can
cause all sorts of problems, such as diseases. However, sometimes these mutations are beneficial
and allow organisms to better adapt to their environment.
By comparing good DNA with bad DNA, researchers hope to find out why people with the bad
DNA are the way they are (why do they have that disease?), improve methods of diagnosis in order
to catch the diseases earlier on, and improve treatment.
However, researchers weren t able to do that until recently. Various discoveries had to happen before

Silko s Three-C Themes
After a discussion in class, the professor and students acknowledged a concise meaning for the
definition of theme. The literature class concluded that theme can be defined with three aspects.
First, it can be used in the form of being implicit or insinuated. This means it is rarely
acknowledged and masked by the author s words. Second, it can be used as explicit or instantly
recognizable. For example, when Silko says that Teofilo is dead, he openly states it in the work.
Lastly, the theme is the main idea that the author wants to impress upon the readers through actions
of the characters and the setting. For instance, When Leon paints Teofilo s face he is sharing an
action to the audience. However, there must be evidence for this trio of reasons. The audience will
find them with the three C theme. Change, continuity, and creativity are the three implied and
explicit elements given by the author. Like a three stranded braid, the three C theme is... Show more

The first factor in the theme would be change, which is used in the context of altering or
converting. Silko s text is implying the New Mexico tribe s altering of their faith and conversion
to Roman Catholicism. For example, in section 1 of the text, the author notes that the characters
are still practicing pagan worship. Yet, in section 4, they go to the priest for Sprinkling of the
Holy Water. The theme of change is an explicit action. It is implied that the Indians have not left
the boundaries of their Gods to form a devout unity with the Evangelicals. Next, we can grasp the
idea of continuity. This is another significant ingredient for the theme. Having a connection into
eternalness is implied and explicit during Teofilo s burial and the hope that might bring rain. Last
of the three factors is creativity. A people without a vision or dream will perish. The inspiring
thought of Heaven the dream of the afterlife is imperative for the tribe s spiritual

The Federal Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
The main law that can affect employee absenteeism is the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
The federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) took effect in 1993 by federal statute as
well as court decisions (U.S. Department of Labor, 2011). This law enables the workforce to
coordinate job and household obligations. How it works is by permitting staff to take time off
without pay for particular health related and family needs. This law addresses every public
employer and private employers employing more than 50 people at a time. The FMLA necessitates
these businesses to grant up to 12 weeks of leaveto qualified individual workers for the birth of a
baby or childcare, adoption purposes, the staff member s own major health issues or a family...

1). The use of FMLA cannot have a negative impact on the staff s performance evaluation or
possible promotional positions. The performance evaluation should be based on the time the
employee was actually at work and if they meet their performance expectations (Mayhew, 2015)
In conclusion, the FMLA law can work for honest employees who encounter problems but can be
a nuisance for employers of employees who abuse these laws consistently with absences. With the
evolution of job analysis, redesigning of job descriptions to help to improve the criteria for the
candidate selection process are more common today. Employers must also be in compliance with
staffing ratios if they are applicable to the organization. Employee absenteeism can be reduced in
the workplace with the implementation of appropriate staffing strategies, placement of policy and
procedures, tracking of habitual offenders, and effective disciplinary actions.

Rational for Decision Making/Case Formulation: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is characterized by
the presence of signs and symptoms in the three primary domains: (i) reminders of the exposure
(including flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, nightmares); (ii) activation (including hyperarousal,
insomnia, agitation, irritability, impulsivity and anger); and (iii) deactivation (including numbing,
avoidance, withdrawal, confusion, derealization, dissociation, and depression). (Sherin Nemeroff,
2011). The signs and symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorderare persistent, abnormal adaption of

stabilizations and improve symptoms such as racing thoughts, flashbacks, anxiety, and irritability.
A case study involving a 38 year old woman with PTSD and bipolar disorder was treated with
oxcarbazepine (Trileptal). Within a month of initiation of treatment, she reported progressive
improvement in her PTSD symptoms (Malek Ahmadi, 2004). Oxcarbazepine is an analog of
carbamazepine, it is theorized that oxcarbazepine also has efficacy in significantly reducing PTSD
symptoms (Malek Ahmadi, 2004). The patient also experienced symptoms in the past that could
potentially be related to Unspecified Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. L.S.

To what extent can the Tet Offensive of 1968 be described as a key turning point in the Vietnam
War in the Years 1963 73? (30 marks)
The Tet Offensive could be described as a key turning point because it shook USA s confidence
in winning the war, both sides changed their tactics and also because it led to a decrease of
support for the war in the USA. However there were many other key turning points such as the
Gulf of Tonkin incident, the attack at Pleiku and the Battle of Ac Bac. Overall the Tet Offensive

A turning point in the VietnamWar was the Battle of Ac Bac 1963. This is where the Vietcong
won the fight between the ARVN despite their superior fire power, and the fact that the Vietcong
were outnumbered four to one. It was a turning point because it suggested the ARVN were weak
and easily defeated, therefore more troops were needed to solve this problem.
Overall there were many other turning points other than the Tet Offensive 1968 in the Vietnam

The Tet Offensive was the key turning point, this is because it shook USA s previous confidence
in winning the war, it reduced their morale. This is shown by the USA believing Tet was a
defeat, even though it was technically a win e.g. the Vietcong were nearly wiped out with their
loss of 50000 men. It also led to many events such as the public protests and the changes in
tactics. It also led to a key event in the war, which was the withdrawal of the US i.e. their policy of

P Vulgaris Lab Report
After precisely conducting the experiment and tabulating the results, data for Paraquat toxicity
upon P. vulgaris plants can be interpreted over several different parameters. The parameters by
which Paraquat toxicity was examined within this experiment involve visual observations, x ray
diffraction, chlorophyll concentrations, protein concentrations, and lastly malondialdehyde (MDA)
concentrations on a per mg of protein basis. As stated before Paraquat is very widely used
herbicide known to produce superoxide anions leading to chloroplast membrane damage and
ultimately a variety of adverse effects upon the host organism, in this case P. vulgaris (Chia et al.,

vulgaris plants, via the formation of a standard curve prepared using varying concentrations of
bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution. Following absorbance readings of the various BSA
solutions, they were plotted against their concentrations providing an indirect measure for
determining protein concentrations of the plant samples within the assay tubes, and through further
calculations the sample protein concentration. The mean protein concentration for the control group
was calculated to be 3.34 В± 1.30 mg/mL, while the mean treated group concentration was 2.01 В±
1.26 mg/mL. These results similarly like the chlorophyll results correlate with the literature articles,
as a reduced protein content within the Paraquat treated plants can be expected to some extent
(Chia et al., 1981). This reduction in protein concentration is the result of those superoxide anions
produced by Paraquat, disrupting the chloroplast membranes and allowing for intracellular
components including some proteins to leak out, hence the decrease in protein concentration in
comparison to the non treated plants (Qian et al., 2009). A slight outlier may exist within the
treated groups protein concentrations as one of the groups provided a negative value for protein
concentration which is not valid, but even after exclusion of that data value, results are still
supportive of the expected outcome. Though these results support the claim of Paraquat toxicity
causing membrane deterioration and leakiness, protein concentration values are rather more
purposeful when used to analyze malondialdehyde (MDA) values on per mg of protein

we had not had dinner we debated over whether we should get something from the concession
stand. After a couple minutes of bickering my family decided to get some hotdogs and chips. I
ate my dinner, I and walked over to talk to my other teammates. We talked about school and other
sports, but then finally started talking about the real topic which was the game. The team that we
would face would be very lanky and masculine. They were also athletic,as well as us. But the real
question would we be able to keep up with their pace and be able to defend their height.
As warm ups started I began to feel a weird feeling in my stomach. I had never been affected by
the people around but I guess now I was actually scared. After warm ups we huddled up we were
given a quick speech, and told us that we did not need to be as physically gifted as they were but
we needed to be able to have the heart to overcome the challenge. The game began we started of
in a hole. The team was winning 10 4. They were not better than us they just were getting in our
heads, and making us make the wrong decisions.I sighed in disbelief when a boy named Ethan on
my team accidently shot on the other team s basket. At halftime it was 23 14 with us losing. We
were all looking down in the dumps. Since everyone didn t look to happy I tried to cheer them

Entrepreneurial Orientation In The Apple Computer Company
Entrepreneurial orientation is a key concept when organizations are creating strategies to do
something new and take advantage of opportunities that other organizations cannot exploit
(Ketchen Short, 2017). It can be defined as an organizational level strategic management, which
includes characteristic such as: autonomy, risktaking, competitive aggressiveness, innovativeness
and pro activeness. When major brands Apple and Nike implement entrepreneurial orientation
successfully, they re able to achieve high performance and quality products through innovative
techniques that allows them to maintain market dominance. We ll go into further detail discussing
how both these companies effectively executed entrepreneurial orientation to achieve such success;
starting with some background information.
Apple s history dates to 1974 when two men, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak had a vision that
inexpensive home computers would soon be in demand. Two years later, Jobs and Wozniak built
their first computer in Jobs family garage, they named it Apple I. On April 1, 1976, the Apple
Computer Company was established.
Nike began as an enterprise in Oregon with its founder, sports enthusiast Phil Knight. In 1962, Nike
started under the name Blue Ribbon Sports. During this time, the athletic shoe industry was
dominated by the Adidas and Puma companies. Knight recognized there was segment of serious
athletes that had specialized needs that were not being addressed by the major companies.

Sacco Vanzetti Research Paper
Sacco Vanzetti trial During the 20th century one of the most controversial legal cases in American
history was the Sacco Vanzetti trial. Sacco and Vanzetti were accused of a double murder, and
were sentenced to death by electric chair. Although, the trial wasn t as simple as it seems, the only
piece of evidence tying them to the case was a tweed cap found on the crimescene and many
believed that they were only being accused of these murders because of their political beliefs and
the fact that they were italian immigrants.
Nicola Sacco was a thirty two year old immigrant born on April 22, 1891 in Torremaggiore, Italy.
He moved to the U.S. when he was seventeen and worked as shoemaker in Plymouth, where he
lived with his wife and two kids. Bartolomeo Vanzetti was a twenty nine year old fish peddler
born June 12, 1888 in Villafalletto, Italy. He moved the Plymouth when he was twenty year sold,
and was taken back when he discovered how working class immigrants were treated in the United

The Old Testament And The New Testament
80. Why Is OWNERSHIP An Illusion?
The two gospels, The Old Testament and The New Testament provide mirror images of Terrestrial
Humans mentality Evolution and the comprehensive overview of the mental developmental trends
over a span covering last five millennia. The Old Testament moral norms served in establishing a
legal system with base in an absolute, irrevocable right of private ownership. Incontestable proof of
continuous process of Evolution in this micro segment of Spiral is an emergence of The New
Testament , as a herald of a new mental era on the Earth, which naturally succeeds The Old
Testament . Needless to remind, that The Old Testament also inspired adherents to vehemently
follow the principle an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth , a total defence of ownership
...based on the superstition or the illusion that one was God s chosen people and was superior to
all heathens . (Quote from Livets Bog , Vol IV #1310)
Further, the Old World Testament advocates the ownership right over marriage and the emerged
laws allowed a capital punishment in the instance of the discovery of infidelity . Even today, the
same anti civilization legal heritage package and outrageously severe unwritten rules represent
daily routine in the most conservative and primitive corners of the Globe. Marital fidelity defended
by force and violence is definitively unsustainable practice and turns ...marriage into an enforced

Hamlet and Macbeth Compared as Aristotelian Tragedies Essay
Aristotle s Poetics is often considered the blueprint to a successful tragedy; his outline has been
used for hundreds of years. Aristotle defines a tragedy as an imitation of an action that is serious,
complete, and of a certain magnitude... in the form of an action, not of narrative; through pity and
fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions (House 82). Aristotle believed that the most
important part of a strong tragedywas the plot, and from that, the other elements such as character,
diction, etc. would emerge. Aristotle states, the principle of tragedy the soul, if you like is the plot,
and second to that the characters (Whalley 27). Shakespeare s Macbethand Hamletessentially mirror
this definition. While it is true... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hamlet tackles the tragedy within a family, but Macbeth is written as a tragedy that occurs
between friends and associates. While extremely ambitious to be king, at the opening of the play
Macbeth is a loyal servant to King Duncan of Scotland. However, upon hearing a prophecy from
the three witches that predicts his rise to the throne, an insatiable sense of ambition to succeed and
wield power overwhelms the good nature of Macbeth. Aristotle describes this part of tragedy as,
the action is human, the energy is human... the action is plotted and prepared by the maker
(Whalley, 23). This is evident when Macbeth utters to himself, Let not light see my black and deep
desires making known his intentions to murder the king (Macbeth I.iii.52 53). His action is a
premeditated response and is aggravated by his all too human emotions, ambitions and greed.
After the action element of the story, the character is the next central component in a successful
Aristotelian tragedy. According to Aristotle, the character must be true to life and natural; a
character is supposed to be a perfectly related to the audience while remaining believable enough
to hold their role in a production (House, 91). Hamlet is a wealthy and privileged prince; however,
he deals with the problems similar to most common people. He is confused, emotional, obsessive,
and paranoid about the circumstances surrounding the death of his father the king. He lacks faith

An Analysis Of Benjamin Franklin s Remarks Concerning The...
Published in 1784, Remarks Concerning the Savages of North America, by Benjamin Franklin,
explains the division between how the Native Americans were thought of by the European
settlers, and indeed, this essay applies to how they are often thought of today. Even though the
Europeans thought the natives were uneducated savages, Franklin points out ways they were
actually more civilized than the Europeans. An interesting point made in the essay was what the
Americans were learning from both church and school. Franklin uses an example of a time
when the Native Americans sent a couple of young people to be educated at a white college. The
students learned to be academically smart, but when they came home, they were bad Runners,
ignorant of every means of living in the woods...they were totally good for nothing (Franklin
928). After that experience, they were very resistant to send more natives. Those students lost
valuable skills on surviving in the wild and even part of their culture. The speaker also says at the
end of his speech, If the Gentlemen of Virginia will send us a Dozen of their Sons, we will take
great Care of their Education, instruct them in all we know, and make Men of them (928).... Show

Otago Museum Bsc Analysis Essay
In this letter I present the most recent analysis and design of the Comprehensive Balance Scorecard
(BSC) for a non profit, award winning, and highly progressive with an outstanding broad based
collection, Otago Museum. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is an example of a performance
measurement system. The newly created performance measurementsystem incorporates four
different dimensions, such as Financial, Community / Customer Perspective, Internal Business, and
Learning / Innovation and Growth, in an effort to achieve goal congruence within an organization.
Financial area is concerned with how well a company is using its resources. Also, it shows if an
organization can further expand and operate its desired programs. Community / Customer... Show

Being seen as a community leader in the offering of knowledge and learning opportunities, it adds
value to the museum and forms a positive attitude among community members towards an
organization.
Measurement: We can measure Customer / Community Perspective by calculating the number of
visitors per year. We can measure museum s visits per capita, which will give us an understanding
of our position in relation to other competitors. As well, we can conduct a survey by visitors on the
level of satisfaction they have experienced during their visit to the museum. Also, we can do a more
thorough questionnaire within local community as to what kind of improvements / additions, new
exhibits they would like to see at Otago museum. This will help us to increase the service quality
level.
INTERNAL BUSINESS
Goals: To develop our culture and capabilities and To actively care for, protect and develop our
collections and physical environment
Strategy: By allowing staff to participate in developing organizational culture, with the support from
management, would create a healthy and dynamic environment within an organization. An effective
training program enhances employee capabilities and their commitment to the job, and it motivates
them to provide a higher quality service to visitors / customers. Collaboration between staff
members and the Otago Museum Trust Board creates an effective and positive environment.

Fair Value Accounting
Moving towards Fair Value Accounting
In the past, historical cost measures were mainly used for reporting as they are reliable. However,
historical cost is only relevant upon acquiring the asset and becomes irrelevant as time passes. On
the other hand, fair value based reporting, which accounts for changes in fair values, can produce
balance sheet figures that provide a better reflection of the company s value. This is also why
accounting bodies are moving towards fair value accounting (FVA).
One of the evident standards is the FASB Standard (SFAS) 157, Fair Value Measurements , to
establish clear, consistent guidelines for fair values measurements and disclosures. SFAS No. 133,
Accounting for Derivative Instruments and IAS 39 also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is found that managers are more likely to manage earnings because it is hard to verify whether
the estimated fair value figures are well intentioned or manipulated. Having to rely on their
estimates introduces informational asymmetry. As in the case of Level 3 inputs, since managers
have private information regarding appropriate values to select for model inputs as well as the
underlying economic value of an asset (or liability), the informational asymmetry will create two
problems adverse selection and moral hazard.
Black et al. found that fair value accounting mitigates incentives for firms to time asset sales to
manage earnings. If fair value measures capture unrealized gains and losses that reflect the future
earnings, firms will have little incentive to increase current income at the expense of future
earnings. However, there are still chances for managers to value assets upwards to increase income
so as to increase their performance based compensation, abide by the debt covenant restrictions and
reduce political cost as explained by the positive accounting theory. They could simply take a big
bath during rainy days and use the timing of impairments or upward revaluation reversals to boost
future earnings for even better compensation. Hence, accounting standard setters and securities
regulators need to determine how much latitude to give managers when they estimate fair values
and to

The Civil Rights Movement from 1954 to 1968 Essay
It was a hard time, and for many black persons, it seemed as if all the broken promises of
Reconstruction were epitomized in the actions of the Supreme Court of the United States. Ever
since the 1870 s, the Court had been eviscerating the congressional legislation and constitutional
amendments that had been established at the height of Reconstruction to protect some of the basic
citizenship rights of black people. 1954 was a new time and more than tears and words were
needed. Just about everyone that was black and alive at the time realized that the long, hard
struggles, led by the NAACP, had forced the Supreme Court to take a major stand on the side of
justice in the Brown v. Board of Educationof Topeka decision. We... Show more content on

Brown ruling of 1954 was a unanimous decision, the American public s reactions to it varied
greatly. In the North, where segregated schooling was not a matter of public policy, blacks
viewed the decision as a victory for equality. Most whites in Northern states felt that the decision
had little meaning for them. In the South, however, many whites viewed the Court s decision as
an intrusion of the federal government into their way of life. Southerner s pointed out that the
North, too, was segregated. Black people in the South were profoundly affected by the court
decision. Many felt for the first time that the government might be on their side, and that it might
now be possible to throw off years of oppression. But a year passed before the Court delivered its
instructions on just how school desegregation was to be implemented. When the Court s directions
in what has to be known as Brown II were summarized in the phrase with all deliberate speed,
many black people were disappointed and felt that the government would not support desegregation.

Vanity Exposed in Vanity Fair Essay
Vanity Exposed in Vanity Fair
The title Thackeray chose for his novel Vanity Fair is taken from The PilgrimВґs Progress by John
Bunyan. In BunyanВґs book, one of the places Christian passes through on his pilgrimage to the
Celestial City is Vanity Fair, where it is possible to buy all sorts of vanities. A very sad thing
happens there: the allegorical person Faithful is killed by the people. In the novel VanityFair

he will inherit a lot of money from his aunt. Instead they both fall out of favour, and Becky has

well; she seems to care for no one, not even her friends, and she neglects her own son. A very
hard judgement is passed on her by Lady Jane: She has deceived her husband, as she has

When Rawdon leaves her it becomes harder for her to retain her reputation. When she notices
that people avoid her she works hard to be regarded as respectable. She is not used to a life where
she is not surrounded by admirers, and she is bored. She makes Joseph Sedley listen to her

completely plausible in the world we live in today. There are already many genetic testings on
animals, and we are already able to grow certain appendages on other life forms, such as ears and
other cartilage based body parts. It is thought by many people that implementing emotions to A.I

Compare And Contrast The Tea Act And The American Revolution
The Sugar Act, or the American Revenue Act of 1764, was an imposed tax on the colonies from
Great Britain that put extra taxes on silk, sugar, and coffee. The colonists were angry, not only
because they had to pay extra for these items, but also because it gave the customs officers of the
colonies more power ( The American Revolution). They were now allowed to search warehouses
and ships for smuggled goods. Additionally, if people were accused of smuggling, they would no
longer have to go through colonial civil courts, but instead they would go through vice admiralty
courts (Sugar act). Vice admiralty courts were simply courts that did not have juries that were

In this lab we tested how changing the content of the water affects the speed of the alka seltzer
dissolving. My hypothesis was that the tap water would dissolve the tablet fastest, the salt water
would be second fastest, and the sugar water would be the slowest. I was correct that the tap
water would dissolve the fastest, but I was wrong in that the salt water would dissolve faster than
the sugar water. I think that our results came out the way they did because of the amount of sugar
and salt we put into the water. When we put the sugar and salt into the beakers, we came up with
those measurements on the spot. After the salt and sugar had been added, the salt water was very
cloudy, but you could barely tell the tap water from the sugar water.

Roald Dahl s The Landlady
Roald Dahl s realistic fiction story, The LandLady, takes place at a bed and breakfast owned by the
landlady where she also lives. Billy Weaver, a seventeen year old guy, was looking for a place to
stay, and he walks by the landlady s house. He was going to keep walking when a sign suddenly
caught his eye and next thing he knew, he was ringing the doorbell. By using sentence variety with
lots of description, Roald Dahlcreates the lesson that it is essential to be aware and conscientious of

Throughout the story, Billy is not aware and conscientious of his immediate surroundings. When
Billy is walking down the street and sees the landlady s sign, he seems to be drawn into the house.
BED AND BREAKFAST, it said. BED AND BREAKFAST, BED AND BREAKFAST. Each
word was like a large black eye staring at him through the glass. These words are holding him
compelling him forcing him to stay where he was and not to walk away from that house (2).
This does not even make Billy have the slightest doubt about anything. Dahl uses the sensory
detail of sight to draw in the reader to the sign as it did to Billy when Billy keeps repeating what
the sign said over and over again. Dahl not only uses sensory detail as a craft to develop his
ideas, but he also uses sentence variety with lots of description through his story. Dahl
describing how Billy is being drawn to go to the house shows his craft for developing his ideas.
Billy found himself automatically starting forward into the house. The compulsion or, more
accurately, the desire to follow after her into that house was extraordinarily strong (2). The way

Moon Formation
There are multiple theories as to how the Moon was created and formed. The five stated are all
created and developed by different scientists. The first theory they developed is the Capture theory,
which states that the Moon has formed somewhere else and had been grabbed by Earth s
gravitational pull. Second theory developed is the Fission Theory. It supports the idea that the
substance, which formed the Moon, had been put out in the solar systemby a fast spinning Earth.
The Co Formation is the third theory, suggesting that the Moon formed along the Earth 4.5
billion years ago, combing the gas and dust in the same area. Further, into other theories, the
Colliding Planetesimals theory supports the clear idea that the Moon condensed from debris
when planetesimals (Earth s building block) crashed into each other. The final theory is the Giant
Impact. This theory supports that the Moon s formation formed when combining material that
had blasted into space clashed with a new Earth; about 4.4 billion years ago. The theory I have
belief in is the Giant Impact Theory. It supports the evidence of how they are made of similar
material. The crash from a planet size body would explain how the Moon has a smaller iron core;
because when the collision happened, only bits of the material to form the Moon... Show more

idea lacks to inform how the planets have similar material and are nearly corresponding in

how the Moon was pulled by the Earth s gravitational pull, however for that to happen it has been
proven that the body would be slingshotted rather than grabbed. It s because for a planet to enter an

Is The Rational Actor Hypothesis Used Throughout The...
We can usefully predict the behaviour of others in group contexts by assuming that they are acting
rationally. This is the rational actor hypothesis used throughout the social sciences. To usefully
apply this idea we need a definition of rationality; the one we will analyze is that people maximize
some utilityin deciding on an action. To understand what is meant by utility consider the following
concept. A payoff is a reward in a game that has a definite expected worth (e.g. money) that is
known to both players of a game. A utility is then something which causes payoff maximization, the
maximization of such payoffs by players, given the information available to them plus the
assumption that other players are playing to maximize their payoffs. A key assumption of the
model is that maximizing a utility leads to a fixed set of preferences, in order for any sort of
uniqueness to be present in predictions. This idea of rationality through payoff maximization rests
on the Von Neumann Morgenstern utility theorem. This theorem says that given four axioms
(defined in the Glossary): completeness, transitivity, continuity, and independence, there always
exists a utility function which a player in a game maximizes when making a decision. My
contention in this paper is that utility maximization and therefore the rational actor hypothesis is
too broad of an idea to be of practical use.
While the axioms of payoff rationality clearly imply consistency of behaviour, since transitivity and

Alcohol And Anti Hypertension Medications Essay
Ethnicity and Anti hypertension Medications
Hypertension is a devastating disease state, increasing the risk for patients to develop strokes, heart
attacks, heart failure, and kidney dysfunction. It is prevalent in our population with an estimated 10
15% of Americans diagnosed with hypertension (Hitner Nagle, 2016). Hypertension is the leading
cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which results in nearly 1/3 of deaths annually in the United
States (Still, Ferdinand, Ogedegbe, Wright, 2015). Hypertension is more likely after the age 60, and
is more common in African American patients. It affects 40.4% of African Americans and only
27.4% of whites, causing the African American community to carry a higher burden of
hypertension related complications (Still et al., 2015). There is evidence that suggests some anti
hypertensive medications are more effective in the African American population, including
diuretics and calcium channel blockers (Flack, Nasser, Levy, 2011). It is important to understand
how ethnicity affects hypertension medications and what medications are preferential when
treating patients, especially of African American decent.
What is Hypertension?
There are two types of hypertension (hypertension), the most common is essential hypertension and
is the result of an unknown cause. Secondary hypertension occurs when the cause can be

The Career Of A Professional Pilot
The career that I chose to research is professional pilot. People with this job fly planes of course,
but they have other responsibilities as well. There are multiple categories of professional pilots,
and depending on what kind of pilot they are and what company they work for, the job of pilot
may encompass different responsibilities. A pilot for a small company, for example, may have to
do the preflight check on his plane, while large airlines have other employees who do that. I
chose to research this career because I have been interested in aviation for as long as I can
remember, plus the money in this career is good. It is important to understand the education
requirements, skills needed, salary, and the duties of a specific career when deciding what you
want to do in life. The main work environment for a pilot is in the cockpit of a plane, however on
long flights the pilot and copilot will take turns flying. When one is not flying, he or she would
probably be resting in the sleeping berths. Pilots also have a lot of downtime in between flights, in
which the airlinewhich they work for typically covers the cost of lodging, transportation, and food
(Summary). Professional pilots usually end up working less hours than a normal full time job
requires. On average, an airline pilot will fly around seventy five hours each month, plus one
hundred fifty hours doing other job related tasks such as planning flights and keeping up to date on
weather conditions (Summary). The

centuries, women have played inferior roles compared to men, especially in marriage. When a man

Hate Speech Argumentative Essay
Hate speech is speech that is intended to degrade, intimidate, or inflect violence or prejudicial
action against someone based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or
based on a disability. Hate speech now includes messages of gender, sexual orientation, religious
views, and physical and mental inferiority as well.
Hate speech can be harmful when it is applied and plays a critical role in acts of violence and
discrimination against a targeted population. Another way hate speech can be harm fun is when the
harmfulness of hate speech is understood turns not so much on the ability to act violently, but the
view that such words are basically harmful to those who are targeted. This shows the pattern of
abuse that is caused when abusive speech is directed to a particular target. Hate speech becomes a
hate crime in the United States when the speech contains serious and imminent threat of violence.
The violent would need to be against a person or groups of people to commit specific criminal acts

Theme Of Symbolism In The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter takes place at the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the 17th century, this is
where the Puritans settled after leaving the New World because they wanted to purify the
Church of England. The Puritans were a sect of Protestant Christians influenced by Calvinism,
the idealized that salvation is predestined. They believed that religious behavior was a result of
salvation, so with the Puritan communities so invested in purity sins were punished harshly and
removed. Hawthorne sets the scene of the first chapter with a dark and gloomy effect, the dark

shadowy structure where groups of Puritans dressed in there normal boring clothes have
gathered. A rose bush stands beside the weeds, it foreshadows that brightness may be found
along the track, or it eases the darkening close. Hawthorne brings to the table many references to
the bible and Greek mythology to better describe his characters and the theme of his novel. ..like
a snake gliding swiftly over them.. (Hawthorne 3), is a possible reference to the Bible. When devil

Summary Of The NovelThe Assault By Henry Mulisch
In the novel, The assault, Henry Mulisch s narrative style allows the readers to dig a lot deeper
than to just skim through the pages. By allowing the readers to put themselves inside the story, he
brings out in his novel the true meaning of what a human goes through and how they cope with
tragedies from a serious life event; in this case, a violent assault. By reading Mulisch s novel you
get to see inside Anton s miseries and see his life from a different perspective. Anton is constantly
looking for reassurance in his life for what happened to him in his violent childhood. The violence
that had happened to him has made him suppress his memories and he does not seek to find the
true answers to what had happened that horrible day. He tries to numb himself from his past and
push through life to try to live normally while trying to push past his feelings of his violence.
While Anton struggles with life and his suppressed memories, he faces several aspects of life
throughout the time has helped him stitch in the missing pieces of the violent occurrences of the
assault. This brings himself one step closer to coming to piece with all his memories each time he
breaks down a piece of that distance that he has formed between that life event and himself. This
being said, Henry Mulisch shows the readers how Anton eventually comes to terms with his
suppressed memories of his violence from his past with time.
The main aspect of the novel, The Assault, is the violence that has come upon Anton during his
childhood. The night of the murder of his family has been a heavy memory that has been sitting
deep inside his mind over the years. During the night of the assault, Anton mutters the words For I
was born with bad luck and I ll die with bad luck... (13) This passage is significant to the rest of the
novel because it gives an idea to the readers what kind of misery and misfortune Anton will
encounter throughout his life during each page of this novel. At first, Anton does not accept the
violence that has happened to him and is not willing to move on from his past. He does not want to
face the memories that have brought him such misery throughout his life. The memories of the
violent assault are much more painful to Anton

Deoxygenated Blood Circulation
An understanding of the circulation of blood through the heart might help the reader to get an
better understanding of how the different parts of the heart relate. It helps to think of all the blood
vessels in the body as a huge, sophisticated railway network, where essentially all the blood in the
veins throughout the body ends up in the vena cava, the railway end station. The superior vena
cava receives bloodfrom the upper part of the body, whereas the inferior vena cava receives blood
from the lower part of the body. As the blood fills up in the RA, the increased pressure eventually
makes the tricuspid valve shut open, allowing deoxygenated blood to enter the RV. As the
deoxygenated blood flows into the RV, the pressure in front of the

Film Analysis Of The Film Edward Scissor Hands
Essay
The film Edward Scissor Hands by Tim Burton is seen as a modern day fairytale with the story of
a young man being pulled out of a solitary life into a large town that has a very social community.
When you look closely at the film you can see that it has many deeper meanings and emotions that
are displayed themes throughout the film, some of these are: appearance vs reality, Conformity
/sameness and Self discovery.
Throughout this film we see the theme appearance vs reality which is shown many times. For
example, at the start of the movie we see the mansion which makes the film look like a horror film
but when you see it you are surprised since it has a big colorful well kept garden and it makes it
look a lot less intimidating. The most noticeable example of this theme is Edward, when you
first get a glimpse of Edward we see him in a dark corner inside his mansion. He is spotted by
peg who is trying to sell make when she first sees him she doesn t feel threatened by him, then
she sees that he has a lot of features that make him look like a dangerous person some of these
are, sharp scissors/blades as hands, scars on his face, pale skin and dark clothes with black untidy
hair, when she sees these she tries to leave the mansion but Edward tells her not to go.
Peg Boggs: Why are you hiding back there? You don t have to hide from me I m Peg Boggs, your
local Avon representative and I m as harmless as cherry pie...
[sees Edward come toward her]
Peg Boggs: Oh I can

  • 2. Personal Profit s Crucial Role in Defining a Human Being Personal Profit s Crucial Role in Defining a Human Being College. The word brings to mind the struggle of being accepted to a top tier university. The intense competition seen in high schools around the country to earn a seat in prestigious schools can consume student s lives to such a degree as to corrupt their sense of place. The competition drives students to commit uncharacteristic and almost unconceivable actions. Many cheat their way into college by manipulating affirmative action and as a result intentionally sabotage a peer s chances of succeeding. This pursuit highlights a false sense of entitlement among students and fosters a hostile feeling toward peers. A similar situation is seen throughout many works of literature such as Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad, where a mariner named Marlow, who uncovers the mysteries and horrors of the African interior, seeks to meet an esteemed figure named Kurtz. When Marlow discovers Kurtz s true nature and actions, he realizes the extreme degree of corruptness the human race possesses. In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad suggests that humans only seek personal profit, shown through character relationships between Marlow and the African natives, the manager, and Kurtz. Heart of Darkness depicts the corrupt nature of humanity by illustrating Africans who sold out their own race to Europeans and enslaved them solely for the personal gain of not becoming a slave themselves. When Conrad originally visits the Outer Station, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Erikson s Stages Of Psychosocial Development Rachel Getting Married is a movie about a drug addict who s coming home from rehab to attend her sister s wedding. The main character s name is Kim. In the movie, she is shown to have many issues going on, ranging from an incomplete stage of Erikson s to symptoms of depression. Throughout the movie, she goes through many emotional turmoils and drama, which changes her behavior. Section A: Erikson s stages of Psychosocial Development includes trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, competence vs. inferiority, identity vs. role confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, and integrity vs. despair. All of these stages serve as a foundation for the next, and as a basis for how their personality will develop. In the movie, Rachel Getting Married, Kim shows a lot of mistrust towards people, especially her family, which may have started when she was a baby to the age of one. Trust vs. mistrust is when infants learn basic trust for parents. When they see that their basic needs have been fulfilled they start to trust, rely and depend on that parent. Unfortunately, it might ve been that Kim has an incomplete stage because Kim s mother hasn t been around. Without her mother being around, their wasn t a mother figure in her life, therefore she doesn t trust people as much. This could serve as to why she turned to drugs as a source of releasing her stress. Since her mother wasn t around as a baby, it s safe to assume that Kim s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Improper Use Of Technology In Education The traditionalist approach to school, coupled with the rise in technology, has led to a bitter rivalry. The use of technology continues to catapult the world into a new age while hopelessly dragging along the skeptics that resist the change. Innovation in education continues to prove essential in keeping students engaged and attentive. When educators employ the true benefits of technologyit proves to be highly effective in furthering their ability to teach. However, the improper use of technology has shown to distract and negatively affect students on their path to success. In the mid 19 hundreds, with the turn of the century on the horizon, many schools quickly ran to fill their halls with all the latest and greatest technology. A brilliant example of this is when Stanford University built a state of the art facility in 1967 designed to streamline the lecture process. The innovation involved adding a row of buttons to each desk that could be used to answer in class questions. In theory, this technology would revolutionize the way professors teach and give students the ability to tailor the lecture speed to meet their needs. However, the technology quickly lost popularity and, while it remains in the lecture hall, it has not been used in decades. Many professors who lecture in that classroom point out the technology as an example of why innovation is not always the wisest avenue. This illustrates the common problem of buying extravagant technology without consulting the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Consequences And Effects Of Grade Inflation In Schools Since the day schools were established, society depends on them to determine the capabilities and skills of its members. For schools to fulfill this role many evaluation mechanisms were introduced, and evaluation based on grades was one of them. Undoubtedly nowadays, grades are the main factor that determines and shapes the academic future of individuals and therefore their professional careers. Furthermore, the grades that schools yield by the end of each academic year, represent a priceless resource for decision makers and labour market to implement and improve strategies. Therefore, if these data presented by schools and universities are inaccurate, misleading, or exaggerated, society as a whole, and job market in particular will face serious consequences. In the early 1960s, a phenomenon that reduces the informational value of the grading system in schools and universities has occurred. This phenomenon is referred to as GradeInflation, which can be defined according to The New York Times as the tendency to award progressively higher academic grades for work that would have received lower grades in the past . In this paper the causes, consequences, and workable solutions to this phenomenon will be discussed. Students in schools that experience grade inflation suffer from many severe consequences because of the policy that is followed by their schools. After graduation, students with inflated grades will be placed in competitive and relatively difficult ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He is so malnourished that he looks half his age. After a plethora of operations, examinations, and hospitalizations, doctors still had no idea what was wrong with him, that is, until geneticist Elizabeth Worthey began studying his DNA. Worthey began with the conventional and finished with the unconventional. In order to discover what was wrong with the boy, Worthey mapped out the genes that determine the protein his cells make. This essentially allowed her to pinpoint the mutation that was causing the boy s medical problems. During the same year as Franklin s discovery, Watson and Crick determined that the chemical rungs that join the two helical strands are made up of two base pairs. The two base pairs are adenine (A) thymine (T) or guanine (G) cytosine (C). They also realized that the order of those two chemical base pairs that joined the two helical strands spelled out the genes and determined the variation of traits in all living organisms. In addition to their already impressive discovery, they also realized that the two helical strands could be separated for copying, which facilitated the passing on of genetic information between each generation. A few years following this discovery by Watson and Crick, biochemists Marshall Nirenberg and Har Gobind Khorana determined the reason for genetic mutations. They occur when the sequence of the chemical bases on the DNA that determine the order of amino acids that link to create a protein is incorrect. These mutations can cause all sorts of problems, such as diseases. However, sometimes these mutations are beneficial and allow organisms to better adapt to their environment. By comparing good DNA with bad DNA, researchers hope to find out why people with the bad DNA are the way they are (why do they have that disease?), improve methods of diagnosis in order to catch the diseases earlier on, and improve treatment. However, researchers weren t able to do that until recently. Various discoveries had to happen before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Silko s Three-C Themes After a discussion in class, the professor and students acknowledged a concise meaning for the definition of theme. The literature class concluded that theme can be defined with three aspects. First, it can be used in the form of being implicit or insinuated. This means it is rarely acknowledged and masked by the author s words. Second, it can be used as explicit or instantly recognizable. For example, when Silko says that Teofilo is dead, he openly states it in the work. Lastly, the theme is the main idea that the author wants to impress upon the readers through actions of the characters and the setting. For instance, When Leon paints Teofilo s face he is sharing an action to the audience. However, there must be evidence for this trio of reasons. The audience will find them with the three C theme. Change, continuity, and creativity are the three implied and explicit elements given by the author. Like a three stranded braid, the three C theme is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first factor in the theme would be change, which is used in the context of altering or converting. Silko s text is implying the New Mexico tribe s altering of their faith and conversion to Roman Catholicism. For example, in section 1 of the text, the author notes that the characters are still practicing pagan worship. Yet, in section 4, they go to the priest for Sprinkling of the Holy Water. The theme of change is an explicit action. It is implied that the Indians have not left the boundaries of their Gods to form a devout unity with the Evangelicals. Next, we can grasp the idea of continuity. This is another significant ingredient for the theme. Having a connection into eternalness is implied and explicit during Teofilo s burial and the hope that might bring rain. Last of the three factors is creativity. A people without a vision or dream will perish. The inspiring thought of Heaven the dream of the afterlife is imperative for the tribe s spiritual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) took effect in 1993 by federal statute as well as court decisions (U.S. Department of Labor, 2011). This law enables the workforce to coordinate job and household obligations. How it works is by permitting staff to take time off without pay for particular health related and family needs. This law addresses every public employer and private employers employing more than 50 people at a time. The FMLA necessitates these businesses to grant up to 12 weeks of leaveto qualified individual workers for the birth of a baby or childcare, adoption purposes, the staff member s own major health issues or a family... The performance evaluation should be based on the time the employee was actually at work and if they meet their performance expectations (Mayhew, 2015) In conclusion, the FMLA law can work for honest employees who encounter problems but can be a nuisance for employers of employees who abuse these laws consistently with absences. With the evolution of job analysis, redesigning of job descriptions to help to improve the criteria for the candidate selection process are more common today. Employers must also be in compliance with staffing ratios if they are applicable to the organization. Employee absenteeism can be reduced in the workplace with the implementation of appropriate staffing strategies, placement of policy and procedures, tracking of habitual offenders, and effective disciplinary actions. This is where the Vietcong won the fight between the ARVN despite their superior fire power, and the fact that the Vietcong were outnumbered four to one. P Vulgaris Lab Report After precisely conducting the experiment and tabulating the results, data for Paraquat toxicity upon P. vulgaris plants can be interpreted over several different parameters. The parameters by which Paraquat toxicity was examined within this experiment involve visual observations, x ray diffraction, chlorophyll concentrations, protein concentrations, and lastly malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations on a per mg of protein basis. As stated before Paraquat is very widely used herbicide known to produce superoxide anions leading to chloroplast membrane damage and ultimately a variety of adverse effects upon the host organism, in this case P. vulgaris (Chia et al., 1982). The initial signs of Paraquat toxicity were immensely noticeable... Following absorbance readings of the various BSA solutions, they were plotted against their concentrations providing an indirect measure for determining protein concentrations of the plant samples within the assay tubes, and through further calculations the sample protein concentration. The mean protein concentration for the control group was calculated to be 3.34 В± 1.30 mg/mL, while the mean treated group concentration was 2.01 В± 1.26 mg/mL. These results similarly like the chlorophyll results correlate with the literature articles, as a reduced protein content within the Paraquat treated plants can be expected to some extent (Chia et al., 1981). This reduction in protein concentration is the result of those superoxide anions produced by Paraquat, disrupting the chloroplast membranes and allowing for intracellular components including some proteins to leak out, hence the decrease in protein concentration in comparison to the non treated plants (Qian et al., 2009). A slight outlier may exist within the treated groups protein concentrations as one of the groups provided a negative value for protein concentration which is not valid, but even after exclusion of that data value, results are still supportive of the expected outcome. Though these results support the claim of Paraquat toxicity causing membrane deterioration and leakiness, protein concentration values are rather more purposeful when used to analyze malondialdehyde (MDA) values on per mg of protein ... Although, the trial wasn t as simple as it seems, the only piece of evidence tying them to the case was a tweed cap found on the crimescene and many believed that they were only being accused of these murders because of their political beliefs and the fact that they were italian immigrants. • 18. Hamlet and Macbeth Compared as Aristotelian Tragedies Essay Aristotle s Poetics is often considered the blueprint to a successful tragedy; his outline has been used for hundreds of years. Aristotle defines a tragedy as an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude... in the form of an action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions (House 82). Aristotle believed that the most important part of a strong tragedywas the plot, and from that, the other elements such as character, diction, etc. would emerge. Aristotle states, the principle of tragedy the soul, if you like is the plot, and second to that the characters (Whalley 27). Shakespeare s Macbethand Hamletessentially mirror this definition. While extremely ambitious to be king, at the opening of the play Macbeth is a loyal servant to King Duncan of Scotland. However, upon hearing a prophecy from the three witches that predicts his rise to the throne, an insatiable sense of ambition to succeed and wield power overwhelms the good nature of Macbeth. Aristotle describes this part of tragedy as, the action is human, the energy is human... the action is plotted and prepared by the maker (Whalley, 23). This is evident when Macbeth utters to himself, Let not light see my black and deep desires making known his intentions to murder the king (Macbeth I.iii.52 53). His action is a premeditated response and is aggravated by his all too human emotions, ambitions and greed. After the action element of the story, the character is the next central component in a successful Aristotelian tragedy. According to Aristotle, the character must be true to life and natural; a character is supposed to be a perfectly related to the audience while remaining believable enough to hold their role in a production (House, 91). Published in 1784, Remarks Concerning the Savages of North America, by Benjamin Franklin, explains the division between how the Native Americans were thought of by the European settlers, and indeed, this essay applies to how they are often thought of today. Even though the Europeans thought the natives were uneducated savages, Franklin points out ways they were actually more civilized than the Europeans. An interesting point made in the essay was what the Americans were learning from both church and school. Franklin uses an example of a time when the Native Americans sent a couple of young people to be educated at a white college. The students learned to be academically smart, but when they came home, they were bad Runners, ignorant of every means of living in the woods...they were totally good for nothing (Franklin 928). After that experience, they were very resistant to send more natives. Those students lost valuable skills on surviving in the wild and even part of their culture. However, historical cost is only relevant upon acquiring the asset and becomes irrelevant as time passes. On the other hand, fair value based reporting, which accounts for changes in fair values, can produce balance sheet figures that provide a better reflection of the company s value. This is also why accounting bodies are moving towards fair value accounting (FVA). It is found that managers are more likely to manage earnings because it is hard to verify whether the estimated fair value figures are well intentioned or manipulated. Having to rely on their estimates introduces informational asymmetry. As in the case of Level 3 inputs, since managers have private information regarding appropriate values to select for model inputs as well as the underlying economic value of an asset (or liability), the informational asymmetry will create two problems adverse selection and moral hazard. Black et al. found that fair value accounting mitigates incentives for firms to time asset sales to manage earnings. If fair value measures capture unrealized gains and losses that reflect the future earnings, firms will have little incentive to increase current income at the expense of future earnings. However, there are still chances for managers to value assets upwards to increase income so as to increase their performance based compensation, abide by the debt covenant restrictions and reduce political cost as explained by the positive accounting theory. They could simply take a big bath during rainy days and use the timing of impairments or upward revaluation reversals to boost future earnings for even better compensation. • 30. Compare And Contrast The Tea Act And The American Revolution The Sugar Act, or the American Revenue Act of 1764, was an imposed tax on the colonies from Great Britain that put extra taxes on silk, sugar, and coffee. The colonists were angry, not only because they had to pay extra for these items, but also because it gave the customs officers of the colonies more power ( The American Revolution). They were now allowed to search warehouses and ships for smuggled goods. Additionally, if people were accused of smuggling, they would no longer have to go through colonial civil courts, but instead they would go through vice admiralty courts (Sugar act). Vice admiralty courts were simply courts that did not have juries that were granted the authority to pursue local legal matters pertaining to maritime activities,... • 31. Alka Seltzer Dissolving Lab In this lab we tested how changing the content of the water affects the speed of the alka seltzer dissolving. My hypothesis was that the tap water would dissolve the tablet fastest, the salt water would be second fastest, and the sugar water would be the slowest. I was correct that the tap water would dissolve the fastest, but I was wrong in that the salt water would dissolve faster than the sugar water. I think that our results came out the way they did because of the amount of sugar and salt we put into the water. When we put the sugar and salt into the beakers, we came up with those measurements on the spot. After the salt and sugar had been added, the salt water was very cloudy, but you could barely tell the tap water from the sugar water. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is possible that all you have to do to learn how to shut down your enemy s ability to use the internet is an internet search engine search away and a little practice. An individual can learn how to write a virus or launch a full blown distributed denial of service attackagainst the desired target with some light reading and little trial and error. The case study that is about to be explained to you would like you to think otherwise and appear to make you feel disconnected from these cyber wars. In chapter 7 of Cases in international relations: pathways to conflict and cooperation it contains a case study about the war on cyber wars and briefly explains the different types of attacks that have recently been taking place, with most of them involving the United States. It begins with the author of the case study Glenn Hastedt stating a quote from a former head of the CIA, Michael Hayden stating, rarely has something been so important and so talked about with less clarity and less understanding. (2015). This quote by Hayden is the simplest wording of a very deep and difficult area of discussion that multiple countries and their respective peacekeeping organizations are involved in, attempting to reach agreements on the matter. • 33. Roald Dahl s The Landlady Roald Dahl s realistic fiction story, The LandLady, takes place at a bed and breakfast owned by the landlady where she also lives. Billy Weaver, a seventeen year old guy, was looking for a place to stay, and he walks by the landlady s house. He was going to keep walking when a sign suddenly caught his eye and next thing he knew, he was ringing the doorbell. By using sentence variety with lots of description, Roald Dahlcreates the lesson that it is essential to be aware and conscientious of one s immediate surroundings. Throughout the story, the lack of awareness and being conscientious is a central issue that affects all of the characters. Throughout the story, Billy is not aware and conscientious of his immediate surroundings. When Billy is walking down the street and sees the landlady s sign, he seems to be drawn into the house. BED AND BREAKFAST, it said. BED AND BREAKFAST, BED AND BREAKFAST. Each word was like a large black eye staring at him through the glass. These words are holding him compelling him forcing him to stay where he was and not to walk away from that house (2). This does not even make Billy have the slightest doubt about anything. Dahl uses the sensory detail of sight to draw in the reader to the sign as it did to Billy when Billy keeps repeating what the sign said over and over again. Dahl not only uses sensory detail as a craft to develop his ideas, but he also uses sentence variety with lots of description through his story. Dahl describing how Billy is being drawn to go to the house shows his craft for developing his ideas. Billy found himself automatically starting forward into the house. The compulsion or, more accurately, the desire to follow after her into that house was extraordinarily strong (2). The way Dahl describes how Billy is feeling the desire to follow the lady really helps the reader imagine and almost feel the urge that he is. With Dahl s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Moon Formation There are multiple theories as to how the Moon was created and formed. The five stated are all created and developed by different scientists. The first theory they developed is the Capture theory, which states that the Moon has formed somewhere else and had been grabbed by Earth s gravitational pull. Second theory developed is the Fission Theory. It supports the idea that the substance, which formed the Moon, had been put out in the solar systemby a fast spinning Earth. The Co Formation is the third theory, suggesting that the Moon formed along the Earth 4.5 billion years ago, combing the gas and dust in the same area. Further, into other theories, the Colliding Planetesimals theory supports the clear idea that the Moon condensed from debris when planetesimals (Earth s building block) crashed into each other. The final theory is the Giant Impact. This theory supports that the Moon s formation formed when combining material that had blasted into space clashed with a new Earth; about 4.4 billion years ago. The theory I have belief in is the Giant Impact Theory. It supports the evidence of how they are made of similar material. The crash from a planet size body would explain how the Moon has a smaller iron core; because when the collision happened, only bits of the material to form the Moon... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The theory itself has many faults, practically only explaining how the Moon got located. The idea lacks to inform how the planets have similar material and are nearly corresponding in oxygen isotope ratios. The Capture Theory states how the Moon was pulled by the Earth s gravitational pull, however for that to happen it has been proven that the body would be slingshotted rather than grabbed. • 35. Is The Rational Actor Hypothesis Used Throughout The... We can usefully predict the behaviour of others in group contexts by assuming that they are acting rationally. This is the rational actor hypothesis used throughout the social sciences. To usefully apply this idea we need a definition of rationality; the one we will analyze is that people maximize some utilityin deciding on an action. To understand what is meant by utility consider the following concept. A payoff is a reward in a game that has a definite expected worth (e.g. money) that is known to both players of a game. A utility is then something which causes payoff maximization, the maximization of such payoffs by players, given the information available to them plus the assumption that other players are playing to maximize their payoffs. A key assumption of the model is that maximizing a utility leads to a fixed set of preferences, in order for any sort of uniqueness to be present in predictions. This idea of rationality through payoff maximization rests on the Von Neumann Morgenstern utility theorem. This theorem says that given four axioms (defined in the Glossary): completeness, transitivity, continuity, and independence, there always exists a utility function which a player in a game maximizes when making a decision. My contention in this paper is that utility maximization and therefore the rational actor hypothesis is too broad of an idea to be of practical use. While the axioms of payoff rationality clearly imply consistency of behaviour, since transitivity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Alcohol And Anti Hypertension Medications Essay Ethnicity and Anti hypertension Medications Hypertension is a devastating disease state, increasing the risk for patients to develop strokes, heart attacks, heart failure, and kidney dysfunction. It is prevalent in our population with an estimated 10 15% of Americans diagnosed with hypertension (Hitner Nagle, 2016). Hypertension is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which results in nearly 1/3 of deaths annually in the United States (Still, Ferdinand, Ogedegbe, Wright, 2015). Hypertension is more likely after the age 60, and is more common in African American patients. It affects 40.4% of African Americans and only 27.4% of whites, causing the African American community to carry a higher burden of hypertension related complications (Still et al., 2015). There is evidence that suggests some anti hypertensive medications are more effective in the African American population, including diuretics and calcium channel blockers (Flack, Nasser, Levy, 2011). It is important to understand how ethnicity affects hypertension medications and what medications are preferential when treating patients, especially of African American decent. What is Hypertension? There are two types of hypertension (hypertension), the most common is essential hypertension and is the result of an unknown cause. Secondary hypertension occurs when the cause can be established. There are multiple categories of professional pilots, and depending on what kind of pilot they are and what company they work for, the job of pilot may encompass different responsibilities. A pilot for a small company, for example, may have to do the preflight check on his plane, while large airlines have other employees who do that. I chose to research this career because I have been interested in aviation for as long as I can remember, plus the money in this career is good. It is important to understand the education requirements, skills needed, salary, and the duties of a specific career when deciding what you want to do in life. The main work environment for a pilot is in the cockpit of a plane, however on long flights the pilot and copilot will take turns flying. When one is not flying, he or she would probably be resting in the sleeping berths. Pilots also have a lot of downtime in between flights, in which the airlinewhich they work for typically covers the cost of lodging, transportation, and food (Summary). Professional pilots usually end up working less hours than a normal full time job requires. On average, an airline pilot will fly around seventy five hours each month, plus one hundred fifty hours doing other job related tasks such as planning flights and keeping up to date on weather conditions (Summary). • 39. Hate Speech Argumentative Essay Hate speech is speech that is intended to degrade, intimidate, or inflect violence or prejudicial action against someone based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or based on a disability. Hate speech now includes messages of gender, sexual orientation, religious views, and physical and mental inferiority as well. Hate speech can be harmful when it is applied and plays a critical role in acts of violence and discrimination against a targeted population. Another way hate speech can be harm fun is when the harmfulness of hate speech is understood turns not so much on the ability to act violently, but the view that such words are basically harmful to those who are targeted. This shows the pattern of abuse that is caused when abusive speech is directed to a particular target. Hate speech becomes a hate crime in the United States when the speech contains serious and imminent threat of violence. The violent would need to be against a person or groups of people to commit specific criminal acts against those persons. • 40. Theme Of Symbolism In The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter takes place at the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the 17th century, this is where the Puritans settled after leaving the New World because they wanted to purify the Church of England. The Puritans were a sect of Protestant Christians influenced by Calvinism, the idealized that salvation is predestined. They believed that religious behavior was a result of salvation, so with the Puritan communities so invested in purity sins were punished harshly and removed. Hawthorne sets the scene of the first chapter with a dark and gloomy effect, the dark nature of the prison established in the vicinity of Cornhill , by early settlers. The prison describe as an ugly edifice and black flower of civilized society with weeds growing in front of the shadowy structure where groups of Puritans dressed in there normal boring clothes have gathered. A rose bush stands beside the weeds, it foreshadows that brightness may be found along the track, or it eases the darkening close. Film Analysis Of The Film Edward Scissor Hands Essay The film Edward Scissor Hands by Tim Burton is seen as a modern day fairytale with the story of a young man being pulled out of a solitary life into a large town that has a very social community. When you look closely at the film you can see that it has many deeper meanings and emotions that are displayed themes throughout the film, some of these are: appearance vs reality, Conformity /sameness and Self discovery. Throughout this film we see the theme appearance vs reality which is shown many times. For example, at the start of the movie we see the mansion which makes the film look like a horror film but when you see it you are surprised since it has a big colorful well kept garden and it makes it look a lot less intimidating. The most noticeable example of this theme is Edward, when you first get a glimpse of Edward we see him in a dark corner inside his mansion. He is spotted by peg who is trying to sell make when she first sees him she doesn t feel threatened by him, then she sees that he has a lot of features that make him look like a dangerous person some of these are, sharp scissors/blades as hands, scars on his face, pale skin and dark clothes with black untidy hair, when she sees these she tries to leave the mansion but Edward tells her not to go.
