Murderer , directed by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, arose from his story s
infamy. With this documentary came numerous questions as to Avery s possible
innocence, but above all else answers that shed light on a possibly corrupt justice

A Graveyard in Asheville
For this journal review, I have decided to do a graveyard in Asheville which is very
well known. The cemetery Riverside Cemetery has existed since 1885 and was built
by the Asheville Cemetery Company and in 1952 was sold to the City of Asheville.
For this review I ll be focusing on the various styles of graves seen throughout the
cemetery, while also emphasizing the meaning of the different artistic symbols seen.
I ll also make sure to note the significant graves and mausoleums that are home to
some of the most descriptive artwork. The graveyard is home to more than 14,000
graves some of which carry important meanings or information. I believe graveyards
are sacred art museums and while walking through one provides a much different
experience, some similarities are important for us to see.
The City of Asheville s Riverside Cemetery is located in Montford, less than 2
miles from downtown. It provides over 87 acres of grounds and is a protected tree
area. Today the area operates under the City of Asheville Parks, Recreation and
Cultural Arts Department. Looking through the various headstones, I can see many
similarities among the different symbols. Looking past just the symbols we can see
a level of intricate artwork laid down by the art of hand carving and engraving. Hand
carving and engraving headstones is an ancient practice in which artists and
craftsmen have formed extraordinary memorials from pieces of raw stone.

Conclusion
In review of the data collected for this assignment, I have gained greater insight into
the population I serve. Much of the data simply reinforced my assumptions, but
others; like the information on race, has given me a better understanding about the
population I serve and has given me greater insight into the social tension and
conflict that appears to be at the forefront of concerns for many of my students
(Moore, Bagin Gallagher, 2013, p.18). Race is always an issue for many of my
students. After reviewing the census data I noticed that most of the population
identifies themselves as one race, and the racial divide is almost 50/50 between

healthcare is the largest employer in St. Louis, employing almost 25,000 people
(St. louis regional chamber, 2013). According to the 2007 2011Census, the average
household income for St. Louis city is, however, $33,652. I believe that it is safe
to assume that the majority of the individuals who live in the city do not hold
many the high paying jobs at this institution. If I look at the community through
the eyes of my students, I would probably equate success with being white as well,
simply because the majority of individuals I see in positions of success are
Caucasian. The campus of St. Louis University and Washington University are
flooded with a Caucasian majority. The Doctors and Nurses at BJC may not all be
Caucasian, but they are certainly not African American. Even at my school, the
majority of the teachers are Caucasian. In my district, it appears that the best High
Schools have the fewest number of African American teachers. I am sure that this
model holds true for elementary and middle schools within the district as well. Also,
I know of very few teachers who actually live within the boundaries of the School
