Speech Learning Mechanism
SLM (Flege, 1995, 2003) is based on the assumption that the speech learning mechanism remains
intact across the life span. It predicts that adults retain the ability to acquire new phonetic
categories in their L2, contrary to the notion of a critical period (Lenneberg, 1967; Penfield
Roberts, 1959). However, the acquisition of L2 speech sounds depends on the perceived cross
language phonetic distance and the state of development of the L1; thus, in this view, the L1 acts
as a template or filter at the early stages of L2 acquisition. A crucial assumption of SLM is that L1
and L2 phonetic subsystems are not fully separated and that L2 speech sounds may be judged to be
instances of L1 speech sound categories. SLM attempts to explain how speech perceptionaffects L2
phonological acquisition by distinguishing two kinds of sounds: new and similar. New sounds are
those that are not identified with any L1 sound, while similar sounds are those perceived to be the
same as certain L1 sounds. In this view, a process of equivalence classification hinders or prevents
the establishment of new phonetic categories for similar sounds. The L1 system becomes attuned
to just those contrasts of the language that are meaningful in the L1, so the system becomes
resistant to the addition of new categories. L1 and L2 sounds are posited to exist in a shared system.
Therefore, SLM predicts that when a new phonetic category is established for an L2 sound that is
close to an L1 sound,

Culture, Ethnicity And Gender Issues Within Psychology
The topic of culture, ethnicity and gender issues within psychology requires more attention;
particularly, within the therapeutic setting. It was refreshing to see that finally, within this chapter
these topics among other were finally being addressed in further depth than before. What was
particularly striking in this week s readings was the role of privilege and awareness.
In the article by Hernandez Wolfe and McDowell (2012), the idea to shift the focus on oppression
to a focus on privilege in counseling and psychology is imperative. After reading the article I find
this useful seeing that once this shift can be made, awareness of privilege and lack of privilege
becomes essential to help elicit action for change. Although it was mentioned that sometimes action
is not always achieved, the awareness piece is becoming increasingly important, especially in
counseling psychology. As mentioned in the article, moving from oppression, focused to privilege
focused reminded me a little of solution focused therapy. Focusing on the positives and strengths to
elicit change. Although privilege is not necessarily a strength, it is an important concept to focus
on. Understanding that, many people who do not have to experience a lack of privilege difficulties
in the therapy setting, in particular, it is important to address these issues. In addressing such
privilege issues, we as therapists can develop a more genuine, understanding, and collaborative
relationship with our clients. This

Essay On Iyashikei Anime
In Japan, the industry of animation is one of the major electronic industries that represent modern
Japanese pop culture. Iyashikei Anime , in Japanese, з™’гЃ—зі»г‚ўгѓ‹гѓЎ, is one of the terms that

some people forgot in the current society. I feel that these kinds of genera will be more needed in
the future as the conflicts and disintegration are increasing by coldness. The global economic
situation is worsening, more and more people are suffering from losing jobs. There might be some
negative opinion that anime is not that effective to change the people s attitude towards the
difficulty, however I believe that the concept of Iyashi is truly needed to soothe and relax people s

Australian History And The Canadian Government
In our society, people with different cultures, backgrounds, and religions were considered unequal.
One of the many people that were treated unequally in Canadian History were the Aboriginals.
Before the war began, Aboriginals were not treated fairly by the Canadian government. Aboriginals
struggled to get a permanent job therefore clearly displaying Aboriginals struggling to get the
resources they need in order to survive. Canadas leader ignored this situation and continued to
discriminate Aboriginals (Marshall 2). Several times, Aboriginals were being used by their own
country to do their dirty jobs. The Canadian government did not want to risk true Canadian lives, so
they used the Aboriginals. By the 1990 s, one would think that the government would come to their
senses and realize that the Aboriginals are just like any other human being. However, this was not
the case because the Canadian Government tried stealing and taking Aboriginal belongings for their
own needs later on. Ultimately, the Aboriginal people were mainly treated unequally by the
Government in the Great War, The Manhattan Project, and the Oka Crisis. Aboriginal citizens in the
Great War were more than willing to enlist and volunteer however, they were not permitted to do so
by the Canadian Government (Armstrong et al.1). Aboriginals hoped that one day, their voices
would be heard and that they would get the rights that they deserve. Furthermore, in 1915, the
Aboriginals thought the Canadian

Similarities and Dissimilarities in Transcription and...
Similarities and dissimilarities in transcription and replication Similarities. The similarities are the
following: Both processes use similar nucleotide building blocks They use the same chemical
method of attack on the same triphosphate group of an incoming nucleotide. The attack too is
perpetrated by the OH final group of the growing chain Both processes are perpetrated by the
hydrolysis of the pyrophosphate group that is released upon instigation of the attack. Differences
between transcription and replication The differences include the following: DNA replication
copies the entire helix, whilst DNA transcription copies only specific regions of one strand of the
helix. During DNA transcription only short region (about 60 base pairs) of the template DNA
helix are unwound. More and more is unwound as the RNS polymerase continues to transcribe.
With replications, however, the parent helix remains separated from DNA helix until the process of
replication is complete. DNA replication and transcription contain slight differences in their
substrates. The DNA nucleotides are deoxyribonucleotide triphosphates. The RNA ones are,
however, different consisting of v, meaning that they possess the OH group. In RNA, too, the
thymine group contains the base uracil. The DNA does not have this and both of these differences
are manifested in DNA transcription. DNA replication too only occurs at certain moments in a cell
s life and is a thoroughly regulated process. DNA

20 October 2014 Library of FlamesAs a shooting star crosses the sky all that can be done is
watch as something great disappears in an instant. The same goes for the Library of Alexandria.
The library of Alexandria was a famous library that contained nearly a million scholarly books and
scrolls. The library contained books regarding astronomy, geography, architecture, mathematics,
medicine, biology, philosophy, and literature. As a result of many wars, fires, and religious decries,
the Library of Alexandria s informational content was either lost or destroyed. The burning of the
library changed history because much Greek culture was lost. Also many scientific ideas were
destroyed in the Library of Alexandria. Many countries made the same mistake as the Greece did
during the Dark Ages because the information about the Dark Ages was lost in the library. The
destruction of the Library of Alexandria has had a major impact on history because the information

For example, many historians believe that the library contained information about the lost city of
Atlantis. It is also thought that the Library of Alexandria contained information about the
dinosaurs and why they mysteriously disappeared ( Alexandria ). If the library had never burned,
this information would be available to people. There are people who spend their entire lives trying
to figure out why the dinosaurs disappeared and whether or not Atlantis was real. If people knew
the whereabouts of Atlantis, society as a whole could benefit. Atlantis could give many new ideas
regarding architecture. Also, Atlantis could provide information about what to do so that our cities
do not end up like Atlantis. If scientist knew what happened to the dinosaurs, they could make sure
it does not happen to humans or prepare people so that they can live through

The Principles And Purpose Of Interactive Design
Search Method A wide search across the University library, Google Scholar and ACM Digital
Library and to widen the search out to popular literature from various magazines, blogs and
articles was conducted to discover information about the process of Design Thinking. To ensure
the search results were not overwhelmingly numerous, speech marks on the phrase Design
Thinking were used before entering it on the search engines. The purpose of this is to ensure
there is appropriate information returned. The books selected were Design Studies by Catherine
Stones published in 2010, [8]; The Principles Purpose of Interactive Design published by Jamie
Steane in 2014 about the different ways individuals design think [6], as well as, the book
Wicked Problems in Design Thinking by Richard Buchanan, broader understanding defining
Wicked Problem early 1992 [3]. The aim for selecting these books is because of their informative
nature and the range of dates over which they were published, which provides more information,
both quite recent and then more of a design classic from 1992 [3]. Moreover, Tim Brown
discussed in the Harvard Business Review in 2008 Design Thinking, [2] and, Jon Kolko wrote an
article about 20 Design Thinking Comes of Age [2]. This gives a clear idea of different ways of
Design Thinking. And Phil Brown recently discussed Why Design Thinking Conquered The World,

909 Lamentations
Dance is defined by Webster as moving rhythmically to music, typically following a set sequence
of steps . However, it can also be used to sway an audience s judgment or exhibit feelings and
emotions that cannot be conveyed by the usage of verbal language. When watching a show, I
would like to be able to get something out of it and with this it brought childhood memories and
rung my old tomboy ways and made me realize not only is it okay to sometimes still have those
tomboyish habits but also to see you don t always have to be an adult and take everything in life
seriously. During this performance two of my favorite pieces were 909 Lamentations and On the
surface. I felt as if these were two of the strongest pieces throughout the whole performance. In 909
Lamentations, Taeylor White exemplified such organized movement. I enjoyed this piece because
it seemed like hip hop with a feminine twist upon it. Although she was trying to tell a story with
her body she also showed that its okay to be slightly more dominate with a submissive undertone.
Her movements never denied her sexuality but instead they brought it to the light, even while being
dressed in baggy clothes and wearing a hat. She kept every slight action abundant yet powerful and

me think of people trying to warn off the bad smells of the sick and burning bodies. Yet, I felt relief

Causes Of The Treaty Of Versailles In Germany
In 1919, after World War I, a representative from England (Lloyd George), Italy (Orlando), France
(Clemenceau) and the US (Woodrow Wilson) came together, agreeing that Germany was at fault
for the cost of the damage that world war one had caused and drafted the Treaty of Versailles. The
main terms of the Treaty were:
That the starting of World War One was Germanys fault
The amount of 6,600 million pounds was to be paid by Germany for the damage the war caused
Germany s army was restructured to a small army with only six naval ships.
Germany had land taken from them and give to other countries.
Germany itself was in hardship due to World War One. Although they were forced to accept the
blame, the country was very poor, jobs were hard to find, food and basic goods were too costly.
The people of Germany were unhappy and thus put their trust in the power of a man who promised
to defend them against the Treaty of Versailles. This man was Adolf Hitler. In 1993 Adolf Hitler
became the Chancellor of Germany. Hitler s actions:
Built up an army, increasing it s weapons size, warships and the air force. He also introduced
compulsory military service. All of this was done in attempted secrecy to the other countries.
The rise of communism was real to the European nations. France and Britain, although aware of the
actions of Hitler, thought Germany may help prevent this rise of communism in the West.
In 1936, Hitler made alliances with Italy and Japan.

Juvenile Offenders And The United Nations Convention On...
1.0 Introduction With the escalating seriousness and devastation being caused by young
criminals, the Queensland Jurisdiction amended the Youth Justice Act 1992, on 11 February
2014, in an attempt to control and reduce young people offending and achieve improved
outcomes for young offenders and their families. However, the reforms are argumentative with
stakeholders believing that the amendments breach the United Nations Convention on the
Rights of the Child. This report will evaluate Queensland s criminal justice system s ability to
effectively balance the rights of juvenile offenders with the society s need for order, as well as
examine different stakeholder perspectives and make justified recommendations about legal
issues and their outcomes. 2.0 Legislation The Youth Justice Act 1992 (QLD) contains laws for
juveniles who commit offences, or are alleged to have committed offences. Under the law a
juvenile is a person who is not old enough, by statutory age of criminal responsibility, to be held
accountable for their criminal acts. In most Australian jurisdictions the maximum age for
treatment as a child for criminal offences is 17 years. However, Queensland is the only
Australian jurisdiction that deals with 17 year olds as adults in the criminal justice system. The
purpose of the Youth Justice Act 1992 (QLD) is to provide fair and balanced law to juvenile
offenders to effectively balance their rights with the society s need for order. The Act also provides

Inequality In Plato s Phaedo
Reconstruction
Importantly, one needs to recall that Plato holds the human is a union of two distinct entities body
and soul he considers death to be their separation. In Phaedo, he expressly uses our notion of
equality to illustrate the way in which humans recollect knowledge (as Socrates recollection theory
of knowledge holds). His his argument from recollection posits that the soul immortal.
When we (humans) perceive sensible things that are equal in the world, we see these as deficient in
their equality. (74d 74e)
Equal things (which we perceive) and Equality itself are not the same. (74b 74c)
When we see the deficiency in perceived equality, it prompts us to recollect Equality itself. (74c
74d)
Knowledge of Equality itself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He says these perceptions are deficient, as sensible things suffer from the compresence of opposites
being both F and not F (e.g., equal and unequal) in different respects, or compared to different
things. Plato refers to a stick as an example of a sensible thing. For premise 1, imagine we have
three sticks, the first two are the same length and the third is shorter in length. So, we can say
the first two are equal to one another (in length) and both are not equal to the third stick.
Therefore, sticks cannot be equal full stop, but are equal to one stick and unequal to the other
stick. This is the case for all things, they are both F and not F when compared to different things
or objects. Just as Helen of Troy will be more beautiful compared to some women and less
beautiful compared to other women. So, this deficiency shows there is a distinction between F
and F ness, (e.g., equal sticks and Equality itself). In essence, our perceived knowledge of equal
things and objects are distinct from Equality itself, in premise 2. He says, We say that there is
something that is equal. I do not mean a stick equal to a stick or stone equal to a stone...but
something else beyond all of these, the Equal itself.

Trees In Their Eyes Were Watching God Research Paper
Trees in Their Eyes Were Watching God
To see yourself like a tree in leaf is a beautiful way to go about life, at least it is for Janie in the
book Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. It centers around Janie Crawford, a
Person of Color growing up in the 1930 s. She s independent and smart and strong willed and has
to learn how to live like that in a world working against her, she struggles with finding love, first
with a man she is forced to love, then with one who give her everything, and then with one who
makes her feel young. But seeing herself as a tree, Janie grows and changes as her life does,
expanding her branches. At numerous points in the book Janie compares herself to a tree, but the
author symbolizes the change and the relationship s within the book through the use of the
metaphor of wood and trees. Some examples of this are Mr.Killicks chopping firewood, the oak
tree in the centre of Eatonville, and Tea Cakes treatment of Janie s trees.
In the beginning of the book Janie s is forced to marry Logan Killicks, a older white man that has
good land and a good house. Janie doesn t want to marry him because she doesn t love him and
doesn t believe that she will be able to grow to love him. Logan is mentioned very little in the ...

it blossoms and needs bee s to survive. Her grandmother once told her that a healthy relationship

The Life Of Mary Shelley s Life
The Life of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
It has been said on many occasions, by many individuals, that truth is stranger than fiction. Mary
Shelley s life, saturated as it was by sorrow and coincidence, serves as very strong evidence of
this statement s veracity. From the circumstances of her birth to her passionate life and the end of
her days, Mary Shelley led a life far more interesting than any work of fiction could hope to imitate.
Mary Shelley was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin to Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin
at Somer s Town, a district of central London, on August 30, 1797.
Twelve days after giving birth to her daughter Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft
died of puerperal fever. William dealt with his grief over the loss of his wife by writing a
moving account of her life, titled Memoirs of the Author of The Rights of Woman . The
biography was received negatively due to the detailed accounts of Mary s liaisons with Imlay and
her suicide attempt. The honesty of the text in these regards led to the temporary destruction of
Mary Wollstonecraft s already polarized reputation. William s reputation was also crumbling at the
time, as his reformist ideals were losing popularity in the wake of the French Revolution. The care
of Fanny and newborn Mary was left to William, although female friends and maids attended to the
practical issues of parenting.
Mary spent many long hours by her mother s grave in the churchyard of St Pancras Old Church, and

Positive Reflection On Divorce
Linda is a 36 year old newly divorced woman. Her early childhood experiences include her parents
divorce. Due to her parents divorce and the following feelings of pressure to conform and agree to
each parent, Linda has developed strong beliefs about her life, particularly her marriage. These are
expressed through Linda s dislike of divorceand her desire to keep her children happy and
innocent, Linda feels that she has failed in both cases and feels guilty and responsible for failing .
However, Linda did admit that her mothers general disapproval and opinion that Linda was to
blame for the divorce may have influenced her thoughts. Due to the sudden divorced her
(ex)husband has imposed, Linda feels very confused and alone, and she has furthered that by
sending her children away and not clearing things with her husband. Linda also does not know how
to move forward in her life, and is hesitant to do anything if it may affect her children. As a result,
Linda is very confused and mildly frustrated with the situation. Linda recognises that her memories
and previous feelings about parents divorce may also be effecting her thoughts and feelings
currently.
In reviewing my practice, I can see that I used several skills very well, in particular the use of
empathetic silences and positive reflection.
An example of the positive reflection is when the client described how her mother was less
supportive and blamed the client for the divorce, in response I said:
On the other hand, at least, your father, it sounds like he was very positive and supportive of you,
like her would be there for you...? (17:58). Linda response was Yeah, he was pretty great, and we
just talked about the future, and what I was going to do with my kids . Later in the practice (7:08)
after the client expressed feelings of helplessness, I asked her As you said, you ve been through
something similar, did you pick up an activities that helped? in response she talked about drawing
and about her friends being supportive. I used empathetic silences regularly throughout the
practice, especially in the beginning of the video from 00:41 3:33 where I allowed the client to
talk introduce her original reason for coming, and again at 10:00 to 10:50,

Analysis Of The Book Malcolm Gladwell
When thinking of successful people you automatically think about how hard people have worked to
be successful. In the Outliers book Malcolm Gladwell argues that we should look at the world that
surrounds successful people. For instance their culture, family, experiences, and their upbringing.
Gladwell has made an interesting argument about how people become successful. In this paper, I
will be talking about how Bradley Byrne, US Representative for Alabamabecame successful using
some information from Gladwell s arguments.

Bradley s efforts have been very successful. Working with a dedicated team, the two year college

encouraging a business climate that creates good jobs.

Intertextuality In The Butcher Boy
The concept of fantasy can be defined as the forming of mental images, especially wondrous or
strange fancies; imaginative conceptualizing (Dictionary.com). At one time or another we have all
fantasized about different things. However, have any of us ever attempted to incorporate those
fantasies into the real world? The following paper will attempt to analyse how the narratives
Mickybo and me and The Butcher Boy combine elements of imagination/fantasy and reality. It will
discuss how the of mixing the two concepts helped to form the narratives and move them forward
and will gauge how these characters are shaped through their imaginations/fantasies. This essay will
focus on four main points. Firstly, it will address how the cruel reality... Show more content on

Mainly we see this combination through the lens of Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Being
obsessed with the film, the boys base themselves on the two characters. Intertextuality is the
concept of texts borrowing from each other. In terms of film, this could be the borrowing of a line
of dialogue, the composition of a shot, or direct reference to another film/text. Intertextuality is
present throughout the film as on occasion the boys use direct quotes from their favourite film
Manos arriba (Loane, 2004). As Mickybo enters the bank to rob it he not only quotes Butch
Cassidy, but we actually see many elements from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kidpresent in
this scene. As he walks towards the entrance we can hear the soundtrack from the film. We can
tell that it is from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid because the music doesn t fit in with the
setting of the scene. If there wasn t enough evidence to suggest the presence of intertextuality
between the two then the moment where Mickybo walks through the door of the bank outright
proves it. The clever use of shots from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid depicting Mickybo
as Butch was a smart way to show how Mickybo felt like he was being his hero whereas the
people in the bank most certainly did not take him seriously. In this scene Mickybo is consciously
copying the film. The intertextuality aids the viewer to understand the boys train of thought
throughout the film. Can the same be said for Frankie Brady in The Butcher Boy? Let s examine
how Neil Jordan combined elements of imagination and reality in his adaption of Patrick Mc Cabe

Job Satisfaction Quotient And Reward Systems Essay
Variety of Work, Challenge, Achievement, Recognition, Relationships, and Autonomy/Freedom.
The relative importance of these motivators would variety for each individual. Armed with these
motivators at the start of a project he invites team members to prioritise these factors using a paired
comparisons table, since knowing individual s motivational drives helps him determine appropriate
work assignments and reward systems. To be more useful, once an individual priority of needs (or
hierarchy) has been determined, project team members are invited to assess the extent to which
their needs are being met to determine their job satisfaction quotient and what actions might be
appropriate to enhance their motivation levels. However, different things motivate different people
at different times. For example, pay is likely to be more significant when we have dependants than
when we are single, and so on.
7. Effectiveness and Efficiency. These two terms have different meanings, described in our
textbook Management Foundations (Bartol, Tein, Matthews, Sharma and Scott Ladd, pg 12, 2011)
thus:
Effectiveness is the ability to choose appropriate goals and achieve them. So essentially, this means
doing the right things heading in the right direction. Whereas, Efficiency is the ability to make the

conserving resources. The two concepts are illustrated by the following

World War II was a very horrific period of time. Men displayed great courage, great ideas as well
as national pride. Many people had died during this battle however they knew it was worth the

every reason to fight harder. The battle of Normandy was the most significant battle of WWII. It
was the most significant because it came with a lot of difficulties, it was one of the largest military

Sarah Imeinu Research Paper
There are four great women of the Pentateuch, but I think Sarah is the greatest of all. The
following is the main background information about Sarah. Sarah Imeinu is the wife of Abraham
and Mother of the Jewish Nation. Sarah was the first matriarch, and Abraham was the first
patriarch (father), of our Jewish people. She was born and raised from the city of Ur, Kasdim, the
Sumerian city of Ur.
Sarah s early life consists of many different names for herself. As a young girl, she was originally
known as Yisach (Jessica), which means to see. She is said to have been born blessed with divine
inspiration. She was exceedingly beautiful, so her original name reflected her beauty. She was a
prophetess and had the ability to see into the future. Another reason for the name Yisach was
because people used to gaze at her beauty. She changed her ... Show more content on

She had the courage to follow her own convictions, no matter how progressive they were at the
time. She led her life as a role model for women of her era. She changed the world positively. She
left the world a changed place because of her strength and insight. The most impressive thing
about Sarah to me was her popularity, power, and strength. Siftei Chachamim, a famed 17th
century Torah commentator, wrote that Sarah s level of prophecy was actually superior to that of
Abraham. It is said that Sarah was such a powerful prophetess that God spoke to her directly,
while to the others he spoke through a messenger. She was entirely free of sin, and she was
exceptionally modest. One event that changed Sarah s life was her giving birth to Isaac. God made a
covenant with Abraham. This was that his wife (Sarah) would conceive a son. The couple both
laughed at this promise. God s covenant come true and Sarah gave birth to a son named Isaac. His
name is ironic because it means

College Essay On Flagella
Brucella is gram negative, non encapsulated, flagellated, and facultatively intracellular coccobacilli.
Brucella is the causative agent of brucelliosis which is transmitted via ingesting contaminated food,
direct contact with an infected animal, or inhalation of aerosols. Transmission from human to
human is extremely rare but in this case possible. This bacterium is highly infectious in that it only
takes 10 100 organisms to infect an individual.
Epidemiology: Brucellosis is an extremely rare disease in the United States as a result of veterinary
control measures. Currently fewer than 100 cases are reported annually most of which comes from
California, Florida, Texas, and Virginia. Most human cases of brucellosis in the U.S. are due to B.

This ability provides an explanation to why Brucella is a systemic infection, affecting nearly all
organs, similar to sepsis. Brucella can gain entry into the body through breaks in the skin, mucosal
membranes, respiratory tract, or gastrointestinal tract. Once in the blood stream, organisms race to
become intracellular pathogens within circulating polymorphonuclear cells and macrophages. LPS
is a viracl factor for this particular organism and plays a roll in intracellular survival because of
guanine and adenine monophosphate production. Brucella are extremely poor inducers of the
immune system s inflammatory response and does not activate the complement system, however
they do inhibit programmed cell death. Brucella are then transported to the lymphatic system and
has the potential to replicate, as well as other vital organs of the host. When Brucella replicates in
the ER, they are released with the help of hemolysin and induce cell necrosis. Laboratory acquired
brucellosis is fairly common due to the improper handling of

Volcanic and Seismic Events as Proof of Plate Tectonic Theory
Volcanic and Seismic events are major pieces of evidence towards proving that plate tectonics
theory is valid.
A seismic event is the transient motion and release of kinetic energy caused by sudden failure of
the earth s crust, usually felt as shaking or tremors in the rock mass. Seismic events range in size
from barely perceptible tremors to major earthquakes. Volcanic events occur when there is a release
of magma, gas and ash from the Earth s crust.
The entire outer surface of the planet is divided into these plate formations with approximately 30
in total. These different plates vary in size from over 100,000,000 square miles, for example The
Pacific Plate, to the Galapagos micro plate at 12,000 square miles. Fault lines separate each ... Show

New Basaltic magma rises to the surface, cools and pushes the plates apart. The convection
currents also help drag the plates apart and then pull them down at convergent boundaries. This
can be seen at the mid ocean ridges. Eruptions are non violent with the exceptions of the East
African Rift Valley where the recent eruption in 2002 in the Republic of Congo had a devastating
effect on the local population, and where the ocean ridges rise up out of the sea such as in Iceland.
The theory of plate tectonics also explains the formation of destructive plate boundaries which
account for creating 80% of the world s active volcanoes. The melting crust at Subduction Zones
(oceanic oceanic or continental oceanic) are due to differences in density between oceanic and
continental lithospheres, where the less dense plate is pushed beneath the more dense plate, and
becomes part of the asthenosphere forming magma that is andesitic in its nature. This creates the
most violent volcanic activity. Island Arc volcanoes such as Pinatubo and Fold Mountain
Volcanoes such as Nevado Del Ruiz (Andes) are very destructive.
The evidence for deep, hot, convective currents combined with plate movement (and concurrent
continental drift) also explained the mid plate hot spot formation of volcanic island chains for
example the Hawaiian Islands and the formation of rift valleys such as The Rift Valley of Africa.
Mid plate earthquakes, such as the powerful New Madrid

disorder that affects 1 in every 2,500 girls (kidshealth). It is a chromosomal that occurs when one of
the two X chromosomes found in females are missing or is incomplete. This condition only affects
females. Although researches don t know exactly what cause turner syndrome, they do know that it
s a problem with a female chromosome. Females who are born with Tuner Syndrome are short in
height and effects their sexual development and the ability to have children. Other features of this
condition that can vary among women who have turner syndrome include: extra skin on the neck,
heart defects, puffiness or swelling on the hands and feet, and/or kidney failure. Turner Syndrome
was discovered by Henry H. Turner, MD, a pioneer endocrinologist. He first discovered the
syndrome in 1938 when he wrote is manuscript describing the syndrome that has his name. Henry
Turner described his initial observations of the Turner syndrome in an interview with R. Palmer
Howard, MD and he said he noticed a pattern of non maturing girls who were shorter than regular
girls and had short necks, and a low hair line. Turner continued to follow the seven patients, and he
later discovers that they responded to an estrogen therapy, in which helped the teenagers develop
breasts, and increase the size of their uterus.

Essay on Atheism
Informative Speech
Atheism
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Atheism, why it important as well as the
fundamental elements of being a part of it. I will discuss what Atheism is, how it originated, and
the number of people who practice this religion.
Central Idea: What is Atheism? Who? When? Where? And Why!?
Organizational Pattern: Topical
Introduction
Forrester Church once said, Religion is the human response to being alive and having to die. In
Christianity when one dies, a glorious heaven awaits them, where they will be adorned with
beautiful wings, a shining halo, and all of their loved ones will be with them. Atheism, on the other

With that definition, most people do not view Atheism as a religion. But as Reverend Bill
McGinnis states, If black is a color, then Atheism is a religion. Black is defined as the total absence
of color, however it is still considered a color. Likewise, even though Atheism is the belief in no
Gods, it is still defined as a religion because of the practice, values, and purpose.
So what is Atheism? It is zero religious affiliation what so ever, a complete rejection and disbelief
in any sort of God or Gods and religious documents.
Traditions, requirements, or boundaries are of a complete absence. Atheists are free to practice
any sort of spiritual healing imaginable as long as they do not answer, ask, pray, or plead to any
form of divine being.)
Moreover, religious documents are viewed as fiction. The Bible, especially, is seen as impossible
for Atheists to relate to or form any kind of scientific reasoning for our creation on Earth. Atheists
focus their attention on human doubt and science breakthroughs. Beliefs like evolution, natural
selection, and other scientific opinions are considered because of their factual foundations.
According to John Stuart, author of The Natural History of Atheism, Atheism originated in the 16th
century by the French. The Greek term Atheos meaning without Gods was

its appeal to the pop genre and witty lyrics. Jon Bellion is the character in his own album and his
journey from a child to an adult and a nobody to a celebrity is the primary focus throughout most of
his songs. The journey of himself through the songs is what makes the lyrics interesting. The
general understanding is that Bellion wishes to portray himself as unique but humble. The
pressures he feels from society and the pressures of his childhood are prominent in the
understanding of his self expression. Bellion seeks to find the universal in the specific. The Human

The Pros And Cons Of Immunization
Immunization is one of the methods used to ensure the non development of many childhood
diseases, such as whooping cough and measles. Immunization enables a child to develop better
immunity to diseases, which were previously known to be fatal. It is, therefore, necessary to
examine the impact that immunization has on society, particularly on children. A lot of
considerations play a role in this matter. Religious beliefs can have a drastic effect such as leaders
prohibiting vaccines and some cultures do not want their children to be vaccinated. Political
influences also have effects on health policies that can effect these mandates which down the road
can effect mandates of individual s understanding vaccines. Historical influences have had major
impacts not just in Canada but all over the world. One example is the polio outbreak in Northern
Nigeria. The media undermining the public s trust and influences of this immunization may cause
serious issues with world leaders of different countries. My objective for this paper is for parents to

It raises a question about the morality of immunization: should children feel pain and be protected
from childhood diseases, or should they not be subjected to the pain but suffer from the
consequences of these diseases? It is this argument that has considerably influenced the debates on
whether to legalize immunization in Canada or not. Another point of contention is the scientific
ramifications of using a vaccine in children. Vaccines, as compared to other medicines, may have
side effects which can cause subtle or long term implications. Gilmour, Harrison, Asadi, Cohen, and
Vohra (4) contend that vaccines may be beneficial, but they may also carry some risks. The issues
of law, ethics, and the right for medical treatment as well as information regarding the vaccine fuel
the debates on immunization in the

Morality In The Road By Cormac Mccarthy
Conflicts in Morality People are always debating between right and wrong; some choose to follow
the crowd while others go on their intuition. In The Road by Cormac McCarthy, we see a boy and
a man who are these outliers in society; they struggle through a journey with many temptations to
give up or to become barbaric due to desperation. Traveling south down the road, the boy and man
encounter many factors of evil (stealing, violence, selfishness) that are a threat to their survival.
To prevent falling into despair, they remain the good guys during their survival in this post
apocalyptic world by establishing three laws: having hope, not resorting to cannibalism, and
prioritizing their survival over others. In The Road, one law that is enforced by the man and boy
is to have hope. In order to stray away from the insanity that is portrayed everywhere in their
environment, they have to keep a positive mindset on their journey. The father does this by holding
responsibility for his son; his son is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This resilience is what differentiates between the good and bad guys. The bad guys give in to the
temptations that hunger offers, however, the good guys find other ways to fulfill their starvation
by any means other than cannibalism. An example is when the father and son sat on the pack and
ate handfuls of dirty snow (McCarthy 102). This scene shows how flexible and creative they can
be when it comes to finding ways to satisfy their hunger to evade the immorality of cannibalism.
DeCoste states, ...who insist upon the survival of their own flesh at the cost of others reduction to

explanation why the father and son do not resort to eating others: it breaks their strong belief in

Schizophrenia is a mental illness which affects the lives of the individual, their families and society
(Murray Lopez, 1996). The term Schizophrenia is often utilized to describe a major psychotic
disorder that alters the way an individual think, feels or acts (NCCMH, 2010). It is often worth
noting that each person who develops this mental illness possess their own unique combinations of
symptoms and experiences. Schizophreniahas been the subject of an ongoing controversy regarding
its etiology and treatment. Biological, environmental and social factors play a pivotal role in

Research that has been conducted so far has attempted to determine the role of biological,
psychological and social factors but unfortunately, evidence does not point to any single factor.
Literature suggests that the etiology of schizophrenia and related psychoses results from a complex
interaction of multiple factors (Broome et al., 2005; Garety et al., 2007). Nuechterlein Dawson
(1984) suggest that much of the conducted research on the etiology of schizophrenia is consistent
with the vulnerability stress model. The vulnerability stress explains that individuals have different
levels of vulnerability to the mental illness schizophrenia. These levels are determined by the
interaction between biological, social and psychological factors. The research of Neuchterlein
Dawson (1984) proposed that vulnerability results in the development of problems if there was a
presence of environmental stressors. This proposal states that if there is great vulnerability, low
levels of stress might be sufficient to cause problems. On the other hand, if an individual possess
less vulnerability, problems only arise with higher levels of stress. Although the etiology of
schizophrenia is not well understood, this model is consistent with a variety of putative causes of
this mental disorder, in addition to the differential relapse and readmission rates that are overserved

IPEC s work to eliminate child labour is an important facet of the ILO s Decent Work Agenda.
Child labour not only prevents children from acquiring the skills and education they need for a
better future, it also perpetuates poverty and affects national economies through losses in
competitiveness, productivity and potential income. Withdrawing children from child labour,
providing them with education and assisting their families with training and employment
opportunities contribute directly to creating decent work for adults. Setting target group

the priority targets for immediate action are the worst forms of child labour, which are defined

The Planet Jay Comes From The Earth
The planet Jay comes from is known as Mir to its inhabitants.
In this universe, there are several sapient species, who originate both in outer space and on Mir.
The human equivalent, mortal species are lovek, who live down on Mir and, at the time of Jay s
entry into Ryslig, are just starting to venture into outer space. However, besides lovek there are
several species that should be discussed in some detail for a proper understanding of the setting.
Most immortal species in the setting fall under the umbrella of Spirits, based on the fact they are
composed of Spirit (substances relating to magic and the soul) rather than Flesh (you know, meat).
The universe is dualist and most living things within it fall under one of the two broad categories
of Spirit and Flesh.
First, there are the stareczi, who live in deep space and generally stay away from Mir. They re
something akin to sapient fungus (or possibly slimes). They have two instars (life stages), which
dictate their place in society.
The first instar is a haploid, unfused individual that grows from a spore. Unfused stareczi live in
loose groups of about five to ten individuals, though pods as large as twenty five are not
uncommon. The second instar is trickier.
The second instar of stareczi is something between a proper life stage and pair bonding. At
maturity, two haploid stareczi fuse into a single, diploid individual who is capable of sporing.
Fused stareczi are solitary and live away from others of their

Bargaining Vs Collective Bargaining
The role of the NLRA, which is also known as the Wagner Act, was established to recognize
employee s rights to organize and negotiate collectively with representatives of their own preference
(Murray, 2017). Furthermore, Section 7 of the NLRA states: Employees shall have the right to self
organization, to form, join, or assist labor organizations, to bargain collectively through
representatives of their own choosing, and to engage in concerted activities for the purpose of
collective bargaining or other mutual aid or protection (Meza, 2013, p. 335). Collective bargaining
is the process by which conditions of employment are negotiated between management, and the
labor organization representing employees in the bargaining unit. However, collective bargaining
refers to a situation in which union members and officials meet with an intent to resolve any issues
or conflicts, in an attempt to maintain relationships (Holley, Jennings, Wolters, 2012, p. 243).
Needless to say, when an employer states that they do not have to bargain over an issue with the
union, the employee should still verify this information with their union representative. According
to the text, collective bargaining is the process of negotiation that occurs between an employer and
a group of employees (Holley, Jennings, Wolters, 2012). Essentially, good faith bargaining is when
both parties genuinely collaborate to reach a labor agreement, which is reasonable in their
bargaining positions,

The Indian Wedding Diary
A wedding is a lot more than just an occasion. It is that special day when two souls in love, vow
to protect and be with each other forever. In most cultures of the world, weddings are a closed
family affair and just a one day celebration, at the most, however, an Indian wedding is way beyond
that. Have you ever been to an Indian wedding before? If you haven t, then you for sure are
missing out on something spectacular. An Indian wedding is much more than just the bride and the
groom getting married; it is a celebration of two families becoming one and is definitely not a
closed family affair.
Desi weddings are a gala galore
An Indian wedding, or a Desi wedding, is a joyous and lavish celebration with exuberant crowds,
participating in numerous ceremonies for almost a week. But the flip side of this extravaganza
is that months of preparation the two families deal with and the fact that these weddings are an
expensive affair, often turns this celebration into a stressful process for them, as they have to
take care of every minute detail for it to be picture perfect. After all, who wouldn t wish to have a
wedding that is perfect in every sense, not only for the bride and the groom, but for all the guests
that put in special efforts to join for this larger than life celebration of yours.

What a heroic journey! Everybody knows who is the protagonist of a story if they read it but how

matter. Now, the hero is the person who hears danger or mishap happening to people and goes
on to take care of this matter. For example, Spiderman hearing a person crying for help and he
goes to save that person. Now, this is what Beowulf does as in this quote Heard how Grendel
filled nights with horror And quickly commanded a boat fitted out. (Page 26). As soon as
Beowulf heard this, he set sail to the Danish place to take care of Grendel. It shows that Beowulf
is confident, brave and willing to take his life for something that hasn t to do with him which is
like how a hero does it. In the Reward stage of Beowulf, Beowulf defeated Grendel and Grendel s
mother and saved the Danes from the horror that brings sadness to their land. Beowulf attained
fame for his heroic deeds and possibly, people heard of what he had done. Now, when a hero
does something heroic or something big that bring joy to the people, the hero gets fame and a
reward for his deeds and people talk about him and what he has done. This is, likely, to happen to

this widely read philosophical discourse has its fair share of critics, it is a sound and valid argument
for the existence of God with true premises and a true conclusion. This paper will present Anselm s
argument, discussing both premises and conclusion, and defend it against the retort made by
Anselm s contemporary, Gaunilo, using the logic of Anselm s rejoinder. Anselm s argument can be
summarized by the following points: 1.God is something than which no greater being can be
thought . 2.Something than which no greater being can be thought is able to exist in understanding
and thought. 3.It is greater to exist in reality than to simply exist in thought. 4.If that which no
greater being can be thought exists only in understanding, then that which no greater being can be
thought is not that which no greater being can be thought, as a greater being would exist in reality.
This is a contradiction. 5.Therefore, That which... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to this theology, God is the fullness of perfection whose being can be described by
every perfect attribute that the human mind is capable of understanding, or the greatest possible
being... exhibiting maximal perfection , to use Anselm s own words (Pojman and Rea 16). If one
is able to grasp what is meant by the definition that which no greater being can be thought , then one
must concede that such a being exists in understanding and thought as he was able to understand
what is meant. If one is not able to conceptualize such a being, then he is, to quote Anselm, a fool
who does not understand what God is . Essentially, in thinking about the first premise of Anselm s
argument, one effectively proves the validity of that

Graduation Requirements For American Students
In recent years many educators have voiced their concern about losing our edge in the global
marketplace as well as an apparent decline in American students achievements. This has become
a reoccurring belief for many teachers, parents, and school districts throughout the United
States. As a result, many states have begun to increase the amount of units necessary to fulfill
graduation requirements in hope to enhance education and make American students more
globally competitive. As many districts have found, it is not feasible to add more subjects to
the already demanding 6 or 7 period days. The problem in doing so is that there was little time
for electives. At the same time, they began to find that adding classes only took away time from
other parts of the curriculum already established. While some districts fumbled with the idea of
adding classes and minimizing losses in other areas, a large number of schools, more
specifically 25 40 percent of U.S high schools adopted block scheduling (American Federation of
Teachers, 1999). It is apparent the block scheduling craze is thought to be a fix all solution to the
problem, at least for those districts and individuals looking for anything to help increase the status
quo. In a nutshell, block scheduling is the practice of breaking up school time into blocks or units
of classroom time. More recently we have seen this practice redefined to stand for a restructuring
movement for longer classroom periods. Typically average class

Nurse Staffing And Patient Safety
The largest and one of the important areas is the healthcare field are our nurses, yet everyday
many are subjected to unfair working conditions such as excessive working hours, low wages, and
lack of support from within an organization. This ultimately results in many of those in the nursing
field seeking employment at other organizations, or switching career fields all together. This can
result in a lack of nurses, which not only puts the patients at risk, it can also reflect negatively on
an organization as a whole.
An article by the New York Times (2015), states, Without nurses, the largest group of health care
professionals in this country, there simply is no quality health care system. (Nurse Staffing and
Patient Safety, 2015) Many of us agree with the statement, as nurses are fundamental to the health
and safety for all of us at some time in our lives. Knowing several nurses, the question was raised as
to what they felt was the largest contributor to the nursing shortage.
The following statement comes from a personal interview with Cheryl E. Kitchen (2016)
Universities do not prepare nurses to nurse they prepare us to manage. Historically, nurses learnt
in the clinical area we were hands on with patients. Now we sit in classrooms and learn about
theories and planning and legal issues because we live in a society of blame and claim. There s
no respect for nurses any more they days where patients listened and trusted nurses are gone. Social

Heavy Metal Women
The following essay will delve into the way in which women are represented within the gaming
industry. It will reference an article found on an online journalistic website called Polygon. The
article is titled Dragons Crown Review: Heavy Metal , written by Danielle Riendeau. It is a review
of a video game which was critiqued due to over sexualized femalecharacter designs. In spite of
Dragon s Crown being a very well crafted game, this article became one of the most popular
artifacts associated with it.
One cannot dissect the Polygon article in the same manner one would dissect a magazine
advertisement depicting women in a misogynistic fashion. The difference is that the Polygon
review itself is criticising another product. Because of this, ... Show more content on

As stipulated by the article itself, Dragon s Crown was developed by Vanillaware and published
by Atlus, both of which are Japanese organizations. It is a two dimensional Brawler with Role
Playing elements set in an adventurous fantasy world of GrimGrimoire and Odin Sphere. The plot

Critical Analysis Of A Rural Road Bridge At The Dundas...
Using the same rural road bridge above the Dundas Subdivision that produced the cover
photograph in the month of June, I returned in the middle of September, this time with a 400mm
mounted up and hoped that the curve in the background would be lit as I was aware that it is
open on the north side near there, while the foreground would be in shade from the trees and brush
along the verges of the right of way. Centering myself between the rails with the tripod mounted
400mm, the scene was framed up and a meter reading was taken based on the light hitting the
brightest portions of the scene. As this was the position I focused on, despite it being
approximately a half mile from my location. When we decide to photograph the light instead of...

Why is this we wonder as new and unaware photographers? When we observe a scene such as
this, the iris of our eyes (aperture) continually opens and closes relative to the mixture of light
levels of a scene as we look at the various tones. Our brains are then able to seamlessly smooth out
these variances in light levels and contrast. The camera on the other hand has a fixed iris
(aperture) and does what we tell it to do if we are in full control of it operation. This difference
between human vision and camera vision is why we are often dissatisfied with the outcome of
many of our photographs taken under difficult lighting conditions should we have chosen to let
the camera make exposure choices through its various automatic program modes. These
disappointments are often then blamed on us not having a good camera, since these poorly
exposed photographs seem like a disaster, they lead us to revert back to only taking lowest
common denominator images, instead of learning to understand light and how our cameras see
that light in order to create more interesting images. The photographic pioneers did not have the
luxury of multi segment metering, auto exposure, auto focus, burst mode, instant feedback on a
swivelling LCD or live view , and yet they made compelling photographs with cameras many
today would consider stone age. What then is our excuse for taking so many harshly lit lacklustre
Rule of Thirds wedges? The decisions we make in the face of

The Cultural Icon Of The 20th Century Essay
Amber Gentile 12 December 2016 Period 2 Albert Einstein The Cultural Icon from the 20th
Century Albert Einstein once said I want to know God s thoughts, the rest are details . Einstein
wanted an equation that would encapsulate all physical laws. To put the beauty and the power of
the universe into a single equation was his life s goal. Although Einstein s name is now
synonymous with genius, his professors would have never predicted him to be this successful
as he would always cut class, and he could not get a single job after graduating. Einstein thought
he was such loser that he wrote a letter to his family saying perhaps it would be better if he was
never born. His father had to apply on behalf of Einstein for academic positions, but they all said
there were no positions available. His father passed away thinking that Einstein was a total
disgrace to the family. In 1902 Einstein moved to Switzerland, and began a career far from
science. One of his friends got him a job to be a patent clerk in the Swiss patent office. He spent
six days a week reviewing applications submitted by inventors to the Swiss government. He had to
analyze the patents and strip them to their essence, which honed his skills as a physicist. Since it
was not intellectually demanding it would give him ample time to contemplate the universe.
Einstein s daydreams would change the way the universe was understood. In 1905 in what has
been called his miracle year, he publishes in his spare time four

All The Light We Cannot See Quotes
I m only trying to make sense of this war inside my head. This quote relates to the characters in
All The Light We Cannot See because everyone is battling with love, truth, or identity while
battling the war in Europe. Marie Laure is living in Saint Malo with her crazy great uncle while the
war is raging on outside the city. Werner was accepted into the Hitler Youth
School and was sent out
into the war to track resistance radio signals. Sergeant von Rumpel is also on the search for the
Sea of Flames diamonds, and what Marie Laure doesn t know about her father can greatly hurt her.
In this novel, three of the characters are searchingfor either truth, love, or identity.
Knowing the difference between the truth and lies is a very common theme in All The Light
We Cannot See. Many characters are lied to by their loved ones and about things that can affect
them greatly, and von Rumpel wants to know the truth about the location about the Sea of
Flames. Sergeant von Rumpel is in dire need of the Sea of Flames diamond, so he can showcase
it in his new museum. He will do whatever is needed to locate the diamond among the vastness of
Europe and the war. Before Paris was invaded, the Museum of Natural History made three
replicas of the diamond and gave the replicas and the real diamond to four trustworthy
employees. The catch: none of them knew if they had a replica of the real diamond. Von
Rumpel was in Paris and found the shop of Dupont, which the owner later admitted to making
replicas and dispersing them in many locations. Once von Rumpel found out the locations, he
was even more determined to find all four diamonds . Especially because he recently found out
that he had been diagnosed with a tumor, and the stone is known to help a person live forever.
He has visited many places in search for the replicas or the diamond: Three replicas. Plus the real
stone. Somewhere on this planet among its sextillion grains of sand. Von Rumpel has visited the
museum, a jeweler, multiple homes, and Marie Laure s house in Paris in search of the Sea of
Flames. His main struggle is knowing if the stone is a replica or real. He is putting a great amount
of trust in the people he has confided in, and he hopes that they have given

  • 2. Speech Learning Mechanism SLM (Flege, 1995, 2003) is based on the assumption that the speech learning mechanism remains intact across the life span. It predicts that adults retain the ability to acquire new phonetic categories in their L2, contrary to the notion of a critical period (Lenneberg, 1967; Penfield Roberts, 1959). However, the acquisition of L2 speech sounds depends on the perceived cross language phonetic distance and the state of development of the L1; thus, in this view, the L1 acts as a template or filter at the early stages of L2 acquisition. A crucial assumption of SLM is that L1 and L2 phonetic subsystems are not fully separated and that L2 speech sounds may be judged to be instances of L1 speech sound categories. SLM attempts to explain how speech perceptionaffects L2 phonological acquisition by distinguishing two kinds of sounds: new and similar. New sounds are those that are not identified with any L1 sound, while similar sounds are those perceived to be the same as certain L1 sounds. In this view, a process of equivalence classification hinders or prevents the establishment of new phonetic categories for similar sounds. The L1 system becomes attuned to just those contrasts of the language that are meaningful in the L1, so the system becomes resistant to the addition of new categories. L1 and L2 sounds are posited to exist in a shared system. Therefore, SLM predicts that when a new phonetic category is established for an L2 sound that is close to an L1 sound, ... • 3. Culture, Ethnicity And Gender Issues Within Psychology The topic of culture, ethnicity and gender issues within psychology requires more attention; particularly, within the therapeutic setting. It was refreshing to see that finally, within this chapter these topics among other were finally being addressed in further depth than before. What was particularly striking in this week s readings was the role of privilege and awareness. In the article by Hernandez Wolfe and McDowell (2012), the idea to shift the focus on oppression to a focus on privilege in counseling and psychology is imperative. After reading the article I find this useful seeing that once this shift can be made, awareness of privilege and lack of privilege becomes essential to help elicit action for change. Although it was mentioned that sometimes action is not always achieved, the awareness piece is becoming increasingly important, especially in counseling psychology. As mentioned in the article, moving from oppression, focused to privilege focused reminded me a little of solution focused therapy. Focusing on the positives and strengths to elicit change. Although privilege is not necessarily a strength, it is an important concept to focus on. Understanding that, many people who do not have to experience a lack of privilege difficulties in the therapy setting, in particular, it is important to address these issues. In addressing such privilege issues, we as therapists can develop a more genuine, understanding, and collaborative relationship with our clients. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this essay, I will go to discuss about Iyashikei culture s embodiment in animeby using one of the famous Iyashikei anime and manga, Natsume s Book of Friends . First of all, according to the sources, Iyashikei , in Japanese, з™’гЃ—зі», means healing Japanese, is a term used for anime and manga created with the specific purpose of having a healing or soothing effect on the audience (Iyashikei,... • 5. Australian History And The Canadian Government In our society, people with different cultures, backgrounds, and religions were considered unequal. One of the many people that were treated unequally in Canadian History were the Aboriginals. Before the war began, Aboriginals were not treated fairly by the Canadian government. Aboriginals struggled to get a permanent job therefore clearly displaying Aboriginals struggling to get the resources they need in order to survive. Canadas leader ignored this situation and continued to discriminate Aboriginals (Marshall 2). Several times, Aboriginals were being used by their own country to do their dirty jobs. The Canadian government did not want to risk true Canadian lives, so they used the Aboriginals. By the 1990 s, one would think that the government would come to their senses and realize that the Aboriginals are just like any other human being. However, this was not the case because the Canadian Government tried stealing and taking Aboriginal belongings for their own needs later on. Ultimately, the Aboriginal people were mainly treated unequally by the Government in the Great War, The Manhattan Project, and the Oka Crisis. Aboriginal citizens in the Great War were more than willing to enlist and volunteer however, they were not permitted to do so by the Canadian Government (Armstrong et al.1). Aboriginals hoped that one day, their voices would be heard and that they would get the rights that they deserve. Furthermore, in 1915, the Aboriginals thought the Canadian ... • 6. Similarities and Dissimilarities in Transcription and... Similarities and dissimilarities in transcription and replication Similarities. The similarities are the following: Both processes use similar nucleotide building blocks They use the same chemical method of attack on the same triphosphate group of an incoming nucleotide. The attack too is perpetrated by the OH final group of the growing chain Both processes are perpetrated by the hydrolysis of the pyrophosphate group that is released upon instigation of the attack. Differences between transcription and replication The differences include the following: DNA replication copies the entire helix, whilst DNA transcription copies only specific regions of one strand of the helix. During DNA transcription only short region (about 60 base pairs) of the template DNA helix are unwound. More and more is unwound as the RNS polymerase continues to transcribe. With replications, however, the parent helix remains separated from DNA helix until the process of replication is complete. DNA replication and transcription contain slight differences in their substrates. The DNA nucleotides are deoxyribonucleotide triphosphates. The RNA ones are, however, different consisting of v, meaning that they possess the OH group. In RNA, too, the thymine group contains the base uracil. The DNA does not have this and both of these differences are manifested in DNA transcription. DNA replication too only occurs at certain moments in a cell s life and is a thoroughly regulated process. DNA ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Destiny Braden Mrs. Smith Pre AP English 10 20 October 2014 Library of FlamesAs a shooting star crosses the sky all that can be done is watch as something great disappears in an instant. The same goes for the Library of Alexandria. The library of Alexandria was a famous library that contained nearly a million scholarly books and scrolls. The library contained books regarding astronomy, geography, architecture, mathematics, medicine, biology, philosophy, and literature. As a result of many wars, fires, and religious decries, the Library of Alexandria s informational content was either lost or destroyed. The burning of the library changed history because much Greek culture was lost. Also many scientific ideas were destroyed in the Library of Alexandria. • 8. The Principles And Purpose Of Interactive Design Search Method A wide search across the University library, Google Scholar and ACM Digital Library and to widen the search out to popular literature from various magazines, blogs and articles was conducted to discover information about the process of Design Thinking. To ensure the search results were not overwhelmingly numerous, speech marks on the phrase Design Thinking were used before entering it on the search engines. The purpose of this is to ensure there is appropriate information returned. The books selected were Design Studies by Catherine Stones published in 2010, [8]; The Principles Purpose of Interactive Design published by Jamie Steane in 2014 about the different ways individuals design think [6], as well as, the book Wicked Problems in Design Thinking by Richard Buchanan, broader understanding defining Wicked Problem early 1992 [3]. The aim for selecting these books is because of their informative nature and the range of dates over which they were published, which provides more information, both quite recent and then more of a design classic from 1992 [3]. Moreover, Tim Brown discussed in the Harvard Business Review in 2008 Design Thinking, [2] and, Jon Kolko wrote an article about 20 Design Thinking Comes of Age [2]. • 9. 909 Lamentations Dance is defined by Webster as moving rhythmically to music, typically following a set sequence of steps . However, it can also be used to sway an audience s judgment or exhibit feelings and emotions that cannot be conveyed by the usage of verbal language. When watching a show, I would like to be able to get something out of it and with this it brought childhood memories and rung my old tomboy ways and made me realize not only is it okay to sometimes still have those tomboyish habits but also to see you don t always have to be an adult and take everything in life seriously. During this performance two of my favorite pieces were 909 Lamentations and On the surface. I felt as if these were two of the strongest pieces throughout the whole performance. In 909 Lamentations, Taeylor White exemplified such organized movement. I enjoyed this piece because it seemed like hip hop with a feminine twist upon it. Although she was trying to tell a story with her body she also showed that its okay to be slightly more dominate with a submissive undertone. Her movements never denied her sexuality but instead they brought it to the light, even while being dressed in baggy clothes and wearing a hat. • 10. Causes Of The Treaty Of Versailles In Germany In 1919, after World War I, a representative from England (Lloyd George), Italy (Orlando), France (Clemenceau) and the US (Woodrow Wilson) came together, agreeing that Germany was at fault for the cost of the damage that world war one had caused and drafted the Treaty of Versailles. The main terms of the Treaty were: That the starting of World War One was Germanys fault The amount of 6,600 million pounds was to be paid by Germany for the damage the war caused Germany s army was restructured to a small army with only six naval ships. Germany had land taken from them and give to other countries. Germany itself was in hardship due to World War One. Although they were forced to accept the blame, the country was very poor, jobs were hard to find, food and basic goods were too costly. The people of Germany were unhappy and thus put their trust in the power of a man who promised to defend them against the Treaty of Versailles. This man was Adolf Hitler. In 1993 Adolf Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany. Hitler s actions: Built up an army, increasing it s weapons size, warships and the air force. He also introduced compulsory military service. All of this was done in attempted secrecy to the other countries. The rise of communism was real to the European nations. France and Britain, although aware of the actions of Hitler, thought Germany may help prevent this rise of communism in the West. In 1936, Hitler made alliances with Italy and Japan. ... • 11. Juvenile Offenders And The United Nations Convention On... 1.0 Introduction With the escalating seriousness and devastation being caused by young criminals, the Queensland Jurisdiction amended the Youth Justice Act 1992, on 11 February 2014, in an attempt to control and reduce young people offending and achieve improved outcomes for young offenders and their families. However, the reforms are argumentative with stakeholders believing that the amendments breach the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This report will evaluate Queensland s criminal justice system s ability to effectively balance the rights of juvenile offenders with the society s need for order, as well as examine different stakeholder perspectives and make justified recommendations about legal issues and their outcomes. 2.0 Legislation The Youth Justice Act 1992 (QLD) contains laws for juveniles who commit offences, or are alleged to have committed offences. Under the law a juvenile is a person who is not old enough, by statutory age of criminal responsibility, to be held accountable for their criminal acts. In most Australian jurisdictions the maximum age for treatment as a child for criminal offences is 17 years. However, Queensland is the only Australian jurisdiction that deals with 17 year olds as adults in the criminal justice system. The purpose of the Youth Justice Act 1992 (QLD) is to provide fair and balanced law to juvenile offenders to effectively balance their rights with the society s need for order. • 12. Inequality In Plato s Phaedo Reconstruction Importantly, one needs to recall that Plato holds the human is a union of two distinct entities body and soul he considers death to be their separation. In Phaedo, he expressly uses our notion of equality to illustrate the way in which humans recollect knowledge (as Socrates recollection theory of knowledge holds). His his argument from recollection posits that the soul immortal. When we (humans) perceive sensible things that are equal in the world, we see these as deficient in their equality. (74d 74e) Equal things (which we perceive) and Equality itself are not the same. (74b 74c) When we see the deficiency in perceived equality, it prompts us to recollect Equality itself. (74c 74d) Knowledge of Equality itself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says these perceptions are deficient, as sensible things suffer from the compresence of opposites being both F and not F (e.g., equal and unequal) in different respects, or compared to different things. Plato refers to a stick as an example of a sensible thing. For premise 1, imagine we have three sticks, the first two are the same length and the third is shorter in length. So, we can say the first two are equal to one another (in length) and both are not equal to the third stick. Therefore, sticks cannot be equal full stop, but are equal to one stick and unequal to the other stick. This is the case for all things, they are both F and not F when compared to different things or objects. Just as Helen of Troy will be more beautiful compared to some women and less beautiful compared to other women. So, this deficiency shows there is a distinction between F and F ness, (e.g., equal sticks and Equality itself). In essence, our perceived knowledge of equal things and objects are distinct from Equality itself, in premise 2. He says, We say that there is something that is equal. I do not mean a stick equal to a stick or stone equal to a stone...but something else beyond all of these, the Equal itself. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Trees In Their Eyes Were Watching God Research Paper Trees in Their Eyes Were Watching God To see yourself like a tree in leaf is a beautiful way to go about life, at least it is for Janie in the book Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. It centers around Janie Crawford, a Person of Color growing up in the 1930 s. She s independent and smart and strong willed and has to learn how to live like that in a world working against her, she struggles with finding love, first with a man she is forced to love, then with one who give her everything, and then with one who makes her feel young. But seeing herself as a tree, Janie grows and changes as her life does, expanding her branches. At numerous points in the book Janie compares herself to a tree, but the author symbolizes the change and the relationship s within the book through the use of the metaphor of wood and trees. Some examples of this are Mr.Killicks chopping firewood, the oak tree in the centre of Eatonville, and Tea Cakes treatment of Janie s trees. In the beginning of the book Janie s is forced to marry Logan Killicks, a older white man that has good land and a good house. • 14. The Life Of Mary Shelley s Life The Life of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley It has been said on many occasions, by many individuals, that truth is stranger than fiction. Mary Shelley s life, saturated as it was by sorrow and coincidence, serves as very strong evidence of this statement s veracity. From the circumstances of her birth to her passionate life and the end of her days, Mary Shelley led a life far more interesting than any work of fiction could hope to imitate. Mary Shelley was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin to Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin at Somer s Town, a district of central London, on August 30, 1797. Twelve days after giving birth to her daughter Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft died of puerperal fever. William dealt with his grief over the loss of his wife by writing a moving account of her life, titled Memoirs of the Author of The Rights of Woman . The biography was received negatively due to the detailed accounts of Mary s liaisons with Imlay and her suicide attempt. The honesty of the text in these regards led to the temporary destruction of Mary Wollstonecraft s already polarized reputation. William s reputation was also crumbling at the time, as his reformist ideals were losing popularity in the wake of the French Revolution. The care of Fanny and newborn Mary was left to William, although female friends and maids attended to the practical issues of parenting. Mary spent many long hours by her mother s grave in the churchyard of St Pancras Old Church, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Positive Reflection On Divorce Linda is a 36 year old newly divorced woman. Her early childhood experiences include her parents divorce. Due to her parents divorce and the following feelings of pressure to conform and agree to each parent, Linda has developed strong beliefs about her life, particularly her marriage. These are expressed through Linda s dislike of divorceand her desire to keep her children happy and innocent, Linda feels that she has failed in both cases and feels guilty and responsible for failing . However, Linda did admit that her mothers general disapproval and opinion that Linda was to blame for the divorce may have influenced her thoughts. Due to the sudden divorced her (ex)husband has imposed, Linda feels very confused and alone, and she has furthered that by sending her children away and not clearing things with her husband. Linda also does not know how to move forward in her life, and is hesitant to do anything if it may affect her children. As a result, Linda is very confused and mildly frustrated with the situation. Linda recognises that her memories and previous feelings about parents divorce may also be effecting her thoughts and feelings currently. In reviewing my practice, I can see that I used several skills very well, in particular the use of empathetic silences and positive reflection. An example of the positive reflection is when the client described how her mother was less supportive and blamed the client for the divorce, in response I said: On the other hand, at least, your father, it sounds like he was very positive and supportive of you, like her would be there for you...? (17:58). Linda response was Yeah, he was pretty great, and we just talked about the future, and what I was going to do with my kids . Later in the practice (7:08) after the client expressed feelings of helplessness, I asked her As you said, you ve been through something similar, did you pick up an activities that helped? in response she talked about drawing and about her friends being supportive. I used empathetic silences regularly throughout the practice, especially in the beginning of the video from 00:41 3:33 where I allowed the client to talk introduce her original reason for coming, and again at 10:00 to 10:50, ... In the Outliers book Malcolm Gladwell argues that we should look at the world that surrounds successful people. For instance their culture, family, experiences, and their upbringing. Gladwell has made an interesting argument about how people become successful. In this paper, I will be talking about how Bradley Byrne, US Representative for Alabamabecame successful using some information from Gladwell s arguments. Being a chancellor of the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education, he served as the chief executive officer of Alabama s two year college system. The system was full of many problems. It needed many changes to return to the important mission of educating students and preparing them for the workforce. Bradley s efforts have been very successful. In his role as Chancellor, Bradley also served as Chairman of the State Workforce Planning Council. He oversaw all of Alabama s workforce development efforts. This gives him an understanding of the state s ability to expand the workforce by encouraging a business climate that creates good jobs. In 2013 Byrne was elected to congress. • 17. Intertextuality In The Butcher Boy The concept of fantasy can be defined as the forming of mental images, especially wondrous or strange fancies; imaginative conceptualizing (Dictionary.com). At one time or another we have all fantasized about different things. However, have any of us ever attempted to incorporate those fantasies into the real world? The following paper will attempt to analyse how the narratives Mickybo and me and The Butcher Boy combine elements of imagination/fantasy and reality. It will discuss how the of mixing the two concepts helped to form the narratives and move them forward and will gauge how these characters are shaped through their imaginations/fantasies. This essay will focus on four main points. Firstly, it will address how the cruel reality... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mainly we see this combination through the lens of Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Being obsessed with the film, the boys base themselves on the two characters. Intertextuality is the concept of texts borrowing from each other. In terms of film, this could be the borrowing of a line of dialogue, the composition of a shot, or direct reference to another film/text. Intertextuality is present throughout the film as on occasion the boys use direct quotes from their favourite film Manos arriba (Loane, 2004). As Mickybo enters the bank to rob it he not only quotes Butch Cassidy, but we actually see many elements from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kidpresent in this scene. As he walks towards the entrance we can hear the soundtrack from the film. We can tell that it is from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid because the music doesn t fit in with the setting of the scene. If there wasn t enough evidence to suggest the presence of intertextuality between the two then the moment where Mickybo walks through the door of the bank outright proves it. The clever use of shots from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid depicting Mickybo as Butch was a smart way to show how Mickybo felt like he was being his hero whereas the people in the bank most certainly did not take him seriously. In this scene Mickybo is consciously copying the film. The intertextuality aids the viewer to understand the boys train of thought throughout the film. The relative importance of these motivators would variety for each individual. Armed with these motivators at the start of a project he invites team members to prioritise these factors using a paired comparisons table, since knowing individual s motivational drives helps him determine appropriate work assignments and reward systems. To be more useful, once an individual priority of needs (or hierarchy) has been determined, project team members are invited to assess the extent to which their needs are being met to determine their job satisfaction quotient and what actions might be appropriate to enhance their motivation levels. However, different things motivate different people at different times. For example, pay is likely to be more significant when we have dependants than when we are single, and so on. 7. Effectiveness and Efficiency. Sarah Imeinu is the wife of Abraham and Mother of the Jewish Nation. Sarah was the first matriarch, and Abraham was the first patriarch (father), of our Jewish people. She was born and raised from the city of Ur, Kasdim, the Sumerian city of Ur. Sarah s early life consists of many different names for herself. As a young girl, she was originally known as Yisach (Jessica), which means to see. She is said to have been born blessed with divine inspiration. The most impressive thing about Sarah to me was her popularity, power, and strength. Siftei Chachamim, a famed 17th century Torah commentator, wrote that Sarah s level of prophecy was actually superior to that of Abraham. It is said that Sarah was such a powerful prophetess that God spoke to her directly, while to the others he spoke through a messenger. She was entirely free of sin, and she was exceptionally modest. One event that changed Sarah s life was her giving birth to Isaac. God made a covenant with Abraham. This was that his wife (Sarah) would conceive a son. The couple both laughed at this promise. A seismic event is the transient motion and release of kinetic energy caused by sudden failure of the earth s crust, usually felt as shaking or tremors in the rock mass. Seismic events range in size from barely perceptible tremors to major earthquakes. Volcanic events occur when there is a release of magma, gas and ash from the Earth s crust. The entire outer surface of the planet is divided into these plate formations with approximately 30 in total. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... New Basaltic magma rises to the surface, cools and pushes the plates apart. The convection currents also help drag the plates apart and then pull them down at convergent boundaries. This can be seen at the mid ocean ridges. Eruptions are non violent with the exceptions of the East African Rift Valley where the recent eruption in 2002 in the Republic of Congo had a devastating effect on the local population, and where the ocean ridges rise up out of the sea such as in Iceland. The theory of plate tectonics also explains the formation of destructive plate boundaries which account for creating 80% of the world s active volcanoes. The melting crust at Subduction Zones (oceanic oceanic or continental oceanic) are due to differences in density between oceanic and continental lithospheres, where the less dense plate is pushed beneath the more dense plate, and becomes part of the asthenosphere forming magma that is andesitic in its nature. This creates the most violent volcanic activity. Island Arc volcanoes such as Pinatubo and Fold Mountain Volcanoes such as Nevado Del Ruiz (Andes) are very destructive. The evidence for deep, hot, convective currents combined with plate movement (and concurrent continental drift) also explained the mid plate hot spot formation of volcanic island chains for example the Hawaiian Islands and the formation of rift valleys such as The Rift Valley of Africa. Nuechterlein Dawson (1984) suggest that much of the conducted research on the etiology of schizophrenia is consistent with the vulnerability stress model. The vulnerability stress explains that individuals have different levels of vulnerability to the mental illness schizophrenia. These levels are determined by the interaction between biological, social and psychological factors. The research of Neuchterlein Dawson (1984) proposed that vulnerability results in the development of problems if there was a presence of environmental stressors. This proposal states that if there is great vulnerability, low levels of stress might be sufficient to cause problems. On the other hand, if an individual possess less vulnerability, problems only arise with higher levels of stress. • 38. Essay on Beowulf and Matrix What a heroic journey! Everybody knows who is the protagonist of a story if they read it but how do they know? How do you or I know the heroes are, in fact, heroes in, for example, the Matrix and Beowulf? This is what I will present in this essay. I will be using the Hero s Journey by Joseph Campbell for both of them by using three stages from it. For the Matrix, I will be using Meeting with Mentor , The Ordeal and Return with Elixir stages. For Beowulf, I will be using Call to Adventure , Reward and Return with Elixir stages. In the Matrix, Neomeets Morpheus, a guy that he was looking for and vice versa. In this stage of Meeting with Mentor , Morpheus is convincing Neo to take the red pill to get out of the Matrix. Now,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The hero uses the powers or knowledge to help others and this is what Neo is going to do. This is another proof of him being the hero. Now, the stage of Call to Adventure in Beowulf is when Beowulf heard that Grendel is attacking the Danes, he goes out with his men to take care of this matter. Now, the hero is the person who hears danger or mishap happening to people and goes on to take care of this matter. For example, Spiderman hearing a person crying for help and he goes to save that person. Now, this is what Beowulf does as in this quote Heard how Grendel filled nights with horror And quickly commanded a boat fitted out. (Page 26). As soon as Beowulf heard this, he set sail to the Danish place to take care of Grendel. It shows that Beowulf is confident, brave and willing to take his life for something that hasn t to do with him which is like how a hero does it. In the Reward stage of Beowulf, Beowulf defeated Grendel and Grendel s mother and saved the Danes from the horror that brings sadness to their land. Beowulf attained fame for his heroic deeds and possibly, people heard of what he had done. Now, when a hero does something heroic or something big that bring joy to the people, the hero gets fame and a reward for his deeds and people talk about him and what he has done. This is, likely, to happen to Beowulf ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Anselm s Ontological Argument Essay Among the most famous proofs for God s existence is Anselm s Ontological Argument . Although this widely read philosophical discourse has its fair share of critics, it is a sound and valid argument for the existence of God with true premises and a true conclusion. This paper will present Anselm s argument, discussing both premises and conclusion, and defend it against the retort made by Anselm s contemporary, Gaunilo, using the logic of Anselm s rejoinder. Anselm s argument can be summarized by the following points: 1.God is something than which no greater being can be thought . 2.Something than which no greater being can be thought is able to exist in understanding and thought. 3.It is greater to exist in reality than to simply exist in thought. 4.If that which no greater being can be thought exists only in understanding, then that which no greater being can be thought is not that which no greater being can be thought, as a greater being would exist in reality. This is a contradiction. 5.Therefore, That which... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to this theology, God is the fullness of perfection whose being can be described by every perfect attribute that the human mind is capable of understanding, or the greatest possible being... exhibiting maximal perfection , to use Anselm s own words (Pojman and Rea 16). If one is able to grasp what is meant by the definition that which no greater being can be thought , then one must concede that such a being exists in understanding and thought as he was able to understand what is meant. If one is not able to conceptualize such a being, then he is, to quote Anselm, a fool who does not understand what God is . Essentially, in thinking about the first premise of Anselm s argument, one effectively proves the validity of that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Graduation Requirements For American Students In recent years many educators have voiced their concern about losing our edge in the global marketplace as well as an apparent decline in American students achievements. This has become a reoccurring belief for many teachers, parents, and school districts throughout the United States. As a result, many states have begun to increase the amount of units necessary to fulfill graduation requirements in hope to enhance education and make American students more globally competitive. As many districts have found, it is not feasible to add more subjects to the already demanding 6 or 7 period days. The problem in doing so is that there was little time for electives. At the same time, they began to find that adding classes only took away time from other parts of the curriculum already established. While some districts fumbled with the idea of adding classes and minimizing losses in other areas, a large number of schools, more specifically 25 40 percent of U.S high schools adopted block scheduling (American Federation of Teachers, 1999). It is apparent the block scheduling craze is thought to be a fix all solution to the problem, at least for those districts and individuals looking for anything to help increase the status quo. In a nutshell, block scheduling is the practice of breaking up school time into blocks or units of classroom time. More recently we have seen this practice redefined to stand for a restructuring movement for longer classroom periods. Typically average class ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Nurse Staffing And Patient Safety The largest and one of the important areas is the healthcare field are our nurses, yet everyday many are subjected to unfair working conditions such as excessive working hours, low wages, and lack of support from within an organization. This ultimately results in many of those in the nursing field seeking employment at other organizations, or switching career fields all together. This can result in a lack of nurses, which not only puts the patients at risk, it can also reflect negatively on an organization as a whole. An article by the New York Times (2015), states, Without nurses, the largest group of health care professionals in this country, there simply is no quality health care system. (Nurse Staffing and Patient Safety, 2015) Many of us agree with the statement, as nurses are fundamental to the health and safety for all of us at some time in our lives. Knowing several nurses, the question was raised as to what they felt was the largest contributor to the nursing shortage. The following statement comes from a personal interview with Cheryl E. Kitchen (2016) Universities do not prepare nurses to nurse they prepare us to manage. Historically, nurses learnt in the clinical area we were hands on with patients. Now we sit in classrooms and learn about theories and planning and legal issues because we live in a society of blame and claim. There s no respect for nurses any more they days where patients listened and trusted nurses are gone. Social media and Google are the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Critical Analysis Of A Rural Road Bridge At The Dundas... Using the same rural road bridge above the Dundas Subdivision that produced the cover photograph in the month of June, I returned in the middle of September, this time with a 400mm mounted up and hoped that the curve in the background would be lit as I was aware that it is open on the north side near there, while the foreground would be in shade from the trees and brush along the verges of the right of way. Centering myself between the rails with the tripod mounted 400mm, the scene was framed up and a meter reading was taken based on the light hitting the brightest portions of the scene. As this was the position I focused on, despite it being approximately a half mile from my location. When we decide to photograph the light instead of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why is this we wonder as new and unaware photographers? When we observe a scene such as this, the iris of our eyes (aperture) continually opens and closes relative to the mixture of light levels of a scene as we look at the various tones. Our brains are then able to seamlessly smooth out these variances in light levels and contrast. The camera on the other hand has a fixed iris (aperture) and does what we tell it to do if we are in full control of it operation. This difference between human vision and camera vision is why we are often dissatisfied with the outcome of many of our photographs taken under difficult lighting conditions should we have chosen to let the camera make exposure choices through its various automatic program modes. These disappointments are often then blamed on us not having a good camera, since these poorly exposed photographs seem like a disaster, they lead us to revert back to only taking lowest common denominator images, instead of learning to understand light and how our cameras see that light in order to create more interesting images. The photographic pioneers did not have the luxury of multi segment metering, auto exposure, auto focus, burst mode, instant feedback on a swivelling LCD or live view , and yet they made compelling photographs with cameras many today would consider stone age. What then is our excuse for taking so many harshly lit lacklustre Rule of Thirds wedges? The decisions we make in the face of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Cultural Icon Of The 20th Century Essay Amber Gentile 12 December 2016 Period 2 Albert Einstein The Cultural Icon from the 20th Century Albert Einstein once said I want to know God s thoughts, the rest are details . Einstein wanted an equation that would encapsulate all physical laws. To put the beauty and the power of the universe into a single equation was his life s goal. Although Einstein s name is now synonymous with genius, his professors would have never predicted him to be this successful as he would always cut class, and he could not get a single job after graduating. Einstein thought he was such loser that he wrote a letter to his family saying perhaps it would be better if he was never born. His father had to apply on behalf of Einstein for academic positions, but they all said there were no positions available. His father passed away thinking that Einstein was a total disgrace to the family. In 1902 Einstein moved to Switzerland, and began a career far from science. One of his friends got him a job to be a patent clerk in the Swiss patent office. He spent six days a week reviewing applications submitted by inventors to the Swiss government. He had to analyze the patents and strip them to their essence, which honed his skills as a physicist. Since it was not intellectually demanding it would give him ample time to contemplate the universe. Einstein s daydreams would change the way the universe was understood. • 46. All The Light We Cannot See Quotes I m only trying to make sense of this war inside my head. This quote relates to the characters in All The Light We Cannot See because everyone is battling with love, truth, or identity while battling the war in Europe. Marie Laure is living in Saint Malo with her crazy great uncle while the war is raging on outside the city. Werner was accepted into the Hitler Youth School and was sent out into the war to track resistance radio signals. Sergeant von Rumpel is also on the search for the Sea of Flames diamonds, and what Marie Laure doesn t know about her father can greatly hurt her. In this novel, three of the characters are searchingfor either truth, love, or identity. Knowing the difference between the truth and lies is a very common theme in All The Light We Cannot See. Many characters are lied to by their loved ones and about things that can affect them greatly, and von Rumpel wants to know the truth about the location about the Sea of Flames. Sergeant von Rumpel is in dire need of the Sea of Flames diamond, so he can showcase it in his new museum. He will do whatever is needed to locate the diamond among the vastness of Europe and the war. Before Paris was invaded, the Museum of Natural History made three replicas of the diamond and gave the replicas and the real diamond to four trustworthy employees. The catch: none of them knew if they had a replica of the real diamond. Von Rumpel was in Paris and found the shop of Dupont, which the owner later admitted to making replicas and dispersing them in many locations. Once von Rumpel found out the locations, he was even more determined to find all four diamonds . Especially because he recently found out that he had been diagnosed with a tumor, and the stone is known to help a person live forever. He has visited many places in search for the replicas or the diamond: Three replicas. Plus the real stone. Somewhere on this planet among its sextillion grains of sand. Von Rumpel has visited the museum, a jeweler, multiple homes, and Marie Laure s house in Paris in search of the Sea of Flames. His main struggle is knowing if the stone is a replica or real. He is putting a great amount of trust in the people he has confided in, and he hopes that they have given ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
