Harper Lee, The Sentry By Wilfred Owen, And Good Guys Dead...
Countless authors, all throughout time, can be seen to write about their passions, their
experiences or their opinions on a certain topic. The question has been asked: do any of these
authors early life experiences or the time setting when they grew up in have any impact on why
the writer developed the work? A range of authors and texts are being covered in this report and
the content will vary from World War One experiences to more recent times of racial segregation
in America. This report has been formed to answer questions and form relationships between
authors and the reason(s) or any influence(s) as to why the following authors have developed their
work: Harper Lee, Wilfred Owens, Ernest Hemingway. I decided to investigate the following texts:
To Kill a Mockingbirdby Harper Lee, The Sentry by Wilfred Owen, To Good Guys Dead by Ernest
Hemingway. If the aim is to find out whether early life experiences of these authors or the time
setting when they grew up in promoted or influenced the development of their work, three questions
must be asked for an accurate conclusion to be drawn: How heavily did the Harper Lee s early life
experiences influence her writing? Where there any government influences that impacted on the
authors writing? Why exactly did the author write the text?
Question one How heavily did the Harper Lee s early life experiences influence her writing?

Stereotypes Of Geography
Regions are necessary to understand a piece of land in a meaningful manner and to successfully
advance civilization using the surrounding natural resources. Canada, being the second biggest
country in the world, is home to numerous biomes, many forms of natural resources and a very
diverse population. However, Canadais united by the different patchworks of regions that creates it
and is dependent on them to grow. Just like how geographers define regions, the regions themselves
define the country. The contrast between the northern tundra contrasted with the milder border
defining south gives the impression that Canada is much colder than it actually is. For example,
the stereotype of Canada is a very sparsely populated land that is covered... Show more content on

Thus, the regions that urban citizens are concerned about may not be the same type of regions
that geographers are studying. For the majority of the population in Canada, regions do not define
what type of land they live but the types of resources, food, and culture they interact with in their
daily lives. Living in an urban or suburban society, the natural resources nor the types of terrain
matter little to them. However, the lingering aspects of early settlers still affects the city dwellers
greatly. For instance, the difference in culture between coastal cities and interior cities could affect
the lifestyle and habits of its inhabitants in unpredictable ways. Even in current times, the
importance of regions for newly immigrants can determine key variables such as accessibility to
employment, English language classes, people of similar cultures or situations, proximity to food
/clothing/healthcare can determine livability in the Toronto Metropolitan Area. Instead of natural
resources, the crucial resources for these refuges are the ability to be able to survive by obtain the
ability to communicate and the ability to make money. As for biomes, the importance of living
with like minded people can provide security and support as well as a comfort of living that some
other parts of the area does not

How Color Can Effect Us Essays
Based on the findings that one has discovered in life itself, in essence, color helps with the flows
of life in a way that it can determines your thoughts, emotions, and decisions. In my research I
gained a vast amount knowledge and from what I ve learned; now I can explain colors in depth,
with a great amount of detail. If colors were non existent, then, there would be a very grey look
upon life. Colors brings forth light, and the light brings forth living. The world displays colors for
a reason and it s very important to life.
Every individual has a favorite color and the choice of that particular color be due to many reasons,
one could come from wanting to relive an event you experienced that you found exciting, a

Color therapists apply the colors to certain spots on the body called chakras. Chakras can be used
to figure out what type of treatment the patient will need based on their medical condition. The
types of colors needed for the treatment will be based on each color effect.
Within our body, color acts as an active power influencing our state of mind. The colors are used
like a medicine to heal. Color therapy can be used to cure diseases such as stress, fatigue,
depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety, and many more. The type of therapy is a natural
way of healing illnesses and one would think it s a unique way of performing therapy. The history
of color therapy came from Ancient Egypt.
What are Chakras?
In the Introduction to Color Therapy Section, It addressed color therapy mainly, and chakras
briefly. Chakras are sources of energy that flow in a line down the median of our body. There are
some traditional writings about chakras stating that there are 88,000 chakras in the human body.
The word chakra in Sanskrit translates to wheel or disc. There are seven chakras in the Western
Culture: The crown, brow, throat, heart, solar plexus, spleen, and root. Chakras are like your five
senses, sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell.
When one source of energy is blocked then we can develop a physical illness or a mental illness.
Chakras are associated with colors. The crown chakra is located at the top

Why People Follow
After completing the two readings, Why People Follow and Salsa, Soul, and Spirit , I now have a
better understanding of leadership techniques that could strengthen communities as well as the
performance of companies. I wasn t very surprised when seeing the four needs of followers from
Why People Follow : trust, compassion, hope, and stability. I thought that those were all
characteristics that were ideal to any strong and effective leader. Of the four, I felt the most
surprise with compassion. I didn t know how much being compassionate could have a lasting
impact to those that follow you. I thought before that leaders would focus more on instructing their
workers rather than give love to those that listen. I saw on the reading that those that have
compassionate leaders are far... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, in Salsa, Soul, and Spirit , one of the eight communal policies was about leadership as
a social responsibility, the idea that all leaders should strive to bring equality and justice to
everyone, no matter what race or social status. I found that policy to align with the need of being
compassionate, seen in Why People Follow . I feel that one needs to truly be caring for the
unfortunate before starting any equality programs. One shouldn t help out others just to get some
public fame. People need to understand the seriousness of income and racial inequality before
heading out and actually leading social responsibility. Another communal policy, generating a
shared vision, also aligns with the need of having hope. During both instances, you as a leader
need to have some direction going before you start leading. You and your partners need to trust
yourselves that you have the ability to move forward and inspire others. Believing that everybody
could would together and get things done builds confidence not only for you but for those around
you. That confidence is what leads to strong, effective, and inspirational

Don T-Stop Believing Poem Meaning
Some will win / Some will lose / Some were born to sing the blues (Journey lines 24 26), and
some were born to be poets. In this case, it is Maggie Smith s Good Bones and Journey s Don t
Stop Believing that serve as great examples to that. All poetry, including songs, are artistic in one
way or another; short or long, rhyme or no rhyme, but they all have a meaning. They also all
contain poetic devices, which is what really makes them artistic. Journey s use of allusions,
repetitions, and metaphors is why Don t stop believing is more artistic and poetic than Maggie
Smith s Good Bones . These two pieces of art, Don t Stop Believing and Good Bones , share a very
similar message which is to believe that there are good things in... Show more content on

Repetition is a pretty basic poetry device that just repeated words or phrases to emphasize their
importance. Metaphors on the other hand are a thing that can make ideas go above and beyond.
According to Dr. Peter Fuda metaphors make big, complex things simple and are more familiar
(Fuda 1). That is why they are so vital in making these two works good. Repetition especially in
Good Bones is used a lot for little parts of the poem that make them stand out, and show
importance. Maggie Smith repeats Life is short twice back to back (lines 1 2). Also at the end
when she makes her biggest point and repeats This place could be beautiful / right? You could
make this place beautiful (Smith lines 16 17). She wants people to see that for the repetition of
all the negative aspects of life, there is also the good which is why she repeats this key phrase and
the end of the poem. Journey s use of repetition is a little different and broad in the fact that it is
the chorus that repeats. Although it is a longer text it still is an important part which is why they
chose to use

Blanding s Turtle Populations
By comparing the observed heterozygosity of two Blanding s turtle populations, it was determined
that Area 1 had significantly greater observed heterozygosity than Area 2. The lower observed
heterozygosity found in Area 2 may have been caused by the founder effect, resulting in a loss of
genetic variation. The founder effectoccurs when a new population is established by a small group
of migrants from a larger population. The founder effect involves a random sampling of alleles
during the reproduction of consecutive generations; when a small population is isolated, it may
amplify the loss of genetic variation as individuals may become increasingly genotypically similar
after each subsequent generation. Eventually, the alleles may become fixed... Show more content on

Population bottlenecks occur when a population undergoes a large reduction in size as a result of
environmental events or human activities. As a result, genetic variation may decrease as certain
alleles may be over presented, under presented, or completely absent. Consequently, the genetic
variation may continue to decline throughout subsequent generations as smaller populations, with
less genetic diversity, sexually reproduce, passing on a limited amount of genes to future offspring.
Furthermore, heterozygosity in these populations may decrease as a result of inbreeding.
Inbreeding occurs when two closely related individuals reproduce; inbreeding may cause the
accumulation of homozygous recessive genes and a decrease in genetic variation. Additionally,
infrequently occurring alleles, rather than common alleles, may face a greater chance of being lost,
which may further decrease the level of genetic diversity. As the population continues to decline,
the genetic drift may be intensified as a result of increasing genetic limitations. Similarly, Rubin et
al. (2001) compared smaller, isolated populations of Blanding s turtles found in the Greater
Chicago area to larger populations found in Michigan, Nova Scotia and Wisconsin, and determined,
by using amplified polymorphic DNA, that the smaller populations had a loss of genetic variation
in comparison to the

Analysis Of Kafka On The Shore
It is natural for humans to question the meaning and nature of their existence in a world that is
constantly evolving and asking more questions of its inhabitants. In his 467 page novel Kafka on
the Shore, Haruki Murakami explores this complex and deeply confusing issue through the lens of
two protagonists Kafka, an outcast 15 year old boy with a grotesque Oedipus Complex; and
Nakata, a pensioner who was subject to a disastrous trauma in the Second World War. Through their
stories, Murakami guides the reader through challenging concepts under the guise of magical
realism: a technique he uses to develop themes and meanings that would otherwise be inaccessible
to a writer with a more conventional approach. In the novel, time is bent,... Show more content on

He struggles with the concept of his own existence, and is in constant pursuit of meaning a search
which forces him to question his morality, intentions, and ideals his true self. Immediately as the
novel begins, his subconscious takes center stage. In the introductory paragraph, we are introduced
to Crow, a mysterious being who can only be described as Kafka s subconscious. Crow speaks to
Kafka throughout the novel, and brings him reason and guidance when his literal existence simply
does not suffice. Initially, Crow reminds Kafka:
Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing directions. You change direction but
the sandstorm chases you. You turn again, but the storm adjusts. Over and over you play this
out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn t
something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you. This storm is
you. Something inside of you. So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm,
closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn t get in, and walk through it, step
by step. There s no sun there, no moon, no direction, no sense of time. Just fine white sand swirling
up into the sky like pulverized bones. That s the kind of sandstorm you need to imagine. (3)

Caucasian check box.
I was raised in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. Silver Spring was a diverse community,
our neighbors were Yugoslavian, Korean, Italian, and included many others. There were many
ethnic specific markets and restaurants near our house where we tried many different foods. Our
community pool was located in a conservative orthodox Jewish section of Silver Spring. Outside
of swim season, our family was included in many Passover seders, sukkoh parties and Bar/Bat
Mitzvah s through relationships developed on our swim team. I felt comfortable in our culturally
dynamic neighborhood and felt fewer pressures to be classified into a specific ethnic category.
When I was in middle school my father inherited his parent s house and our family made an
uncomfortable transition to Chevy Chase, Md. In contrast to the Silver Spring community, Chevy
Chase is a White, upper class, wealthy suburb of Washington, DC. Many of our neighbors belonged
to one of the three local country clubs that, until just a few years ago, did not admit minorities.

How Did The Black Death Contribute To The Renaissance
Beginning in 1347, Europe faced a series of crises such as the Black Death, the Hundred Years
War, the Fall of Constantinople, and the Great Schism. Eventually, these crises would end and
lead to a cultural revival. This cultural revival that Europe experienced was known as the
Renaissance. The Renaissance was a period that revived elements of the classical past, as well as
introduced new forms of thought and expression. The Black Death, a fatal disease that struck Europe
in the years 1344 52, is one of the factors that led to the Renaissance. It originated in the region
between Black and Caspian seas. Nicephorus Gregorus, a Byzantine Scholar, describes its
symptoms as The prominent signs of this disease, signs indicating early death, were... Show more

Architects of the Renaissance used the golden mean, which is often found in nature in the shape of
a leaf or the spiral of a shell. This was used by ancient Greeks. Use of the golden mean adds
harmonious composition to buildings and other structures. Architects modeled their architectural
designs after Vitrivius, a Roman architect. He glorified the idea of proportions and symmetry in
architecture. He believed the human body modeled the beauty of proportion in human nature.
Renaissance architects would visit the remains of ancient buildings, in hopes to measure them and
learn how proportion and symmetry were applied in real structures. Renaissance architecture now
applied regular geometrical forms, rather than the elegant spikes and soaring arches seen in the
Middle Ages.
Artists were inspired by Greek and Roman sculpture, painting, and decorative arts. Renaissance

The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA)
Situation A.
The Family Medical Leave Act, deals with the laws regarding eligible employees taking off up
to twelve weeks of unpaid leave for their child s birth, adopting a child, taking care of an ill
family member, or if they themselves have a serious health condition (Vikesland, 2006). In order
to be considered an eligible employee, you must work for a company that employs at least fifty
people, have worked there for a year and have worked a minimum of 1,250 hours in that year. The
employee also has the right to return to the same or equivalent position, pay, and benefits at the
conclusion of their leave (Vikesland, 2006). The Family Medical Leave Act is not just to protect
employees and look after their interests, but it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The eligible employees are allowed to have up to twelve weeks of leave, but it is unpaid.
However, if the employee has sick time, or vacation leave they have not used then that pay could
be applied to their FMLA time off. So, if employee A has stored paid sick, or vacation time, then
the manager is required to pay him for the time that he has been gone. If employee A did not have
any paid leave to take, then it is considered normal FMLA leave an the manager is not required to
pay the employee for any time while gone. So, looking at the situation there has not been a
violation of the FMLA.
Situation B.
The Age Discrimination in Employment Actgoverns discrimination in the work place for people
age forty and older. Under the ADEA, it is unlawful to discriminate against a person because of
his/her age with respect to any term, condition, or privilege of employment, including hiring,
firing, promotion, layoff, compensation, benefits, job assignments, and training (EEOC, 2008).
Because of companies wanting employees that were going to have longevity from their starting
point, or wanting to move the younger people up the corporate ladder, something had to be done
to protect the rights of the older generation. The ADEA protects those rights; it forces employers
to give benefits to employees over forty, it doesn t allow companies to advertise for jobs specifying
an age, or age limit, and it does not allow a company to

Still Alice By Lisa Genova Essay
This novel Still Alice by Lisa Genova develops the theme of struggle. This is developed through
the use of narrator s internal conflict, the setting of the story and symbols. This story is written
in the third person from Alice s perspective. In this story, Alice is diagnosed with early onset
Alzheimer s disease. This passage of the book tells the reader how someone with Alzheimer s
disease struggles to find out who they are and what they need. The first literary element that
develops the theme of struggle in this novel is internal conflict. Alice woke up on the couch. She

Wolves need to be managed and if they are not addressed they will continue to roam free of

countless numbers of livestock and in places threatened people. In the rural town of Reserve,
New Mexico kids wait for the bus in wooden and metal cages, meant to protect the kids from

wolves growling and snarling at the frightened children. If this doesn t change your opinions on
wolves maybe you should sit in the cage and live in the wild with them. It s a sad time when the

Ideology has no power in the war effort, not really. Nyeudibnov realizes that, at the front the

they both were about a Jewish girl, named Hanna. Hanna has to go to passover to remember about
the Holocaust, but doesn t want to go. At the celebration, Hanna celebrates passover traditions by
drinking wine and opening the door for the prophet Elijah. When she opens the door, she finds
herself on a strange farm with Jewish relatives. They end up being captured by Nazis and taken to
a concentration camp. Hanna met many new people at the camp. She experienced the harsh
conditions the Jews were put through. Many of the people she met ended up dying. These
experiences were very difficult for Hannah. When she finds herself back in her grandparent s

The first difference is the age differences of Hanna. In the movie, Hanna is a immature,
seventeen year old girl that likes the wine. In the book, Hanna is a thirteen year old girl that
despises the wine. Another difference is that the wedding was actually finished in the movie, so
Fayge and Shmule were married before they were taken to the concentration camps. In the book,
they could not finish the wedding, so they were only engaged when they died. A final difference
is that Rivka was actually Hanna s cousin in the movie so they met right away, rather than in the
camp like they did in the book. It is a change because the characters care for each other more
because they are

Cons Of Cultural Relativism
I. Description
Cultural relativism is the concept that morality is based upon culture, [...] there are sometimes
differing moral standards and practices in various cultures (Hollinger, 2002, Kindle Locations 212
218). Morals are not universal, practices are accepted or rejected by the individual culture and
change as the culture changes.
II. Critique
A. Pros of Cultural Relativism
1. Cultural relativism gives one a license to believe what they desire. They find a culture that suits
their desires. Where they can remain unaffected by beliefs of the outside world.
2. As relative, by its very nature, implies flexibility people are drawn to formulate values from the
flexibility. 3. A culture s truth is their own, thereby creating their... Show more content on

Cons of Cultural Relativism
1. Numerous value systems muddy the water and eventually dilutes morality as a whole. This
approach prevents the internal dimension of our personal relationship with God. Our outward
expression of the inward spirituality, the external dimension, is unattainable as we are not able to
have a personal relationship with God without his moral system.
2. Morality assessments are typically based on a personal value system leaving little room for
cultural diversity. The internal dimension is to be free of judgment and the external dimension is to
love one another. If so, this requires cultures to be tolerant of all other cultures.
3. Relativism rejects universal morals. It does not acknowledge the basic principle of the external
dimension, practiced morals from a Godly value system. That Godly value system can only come
from the internal dimension.
4. A cultural moral system is accepted by those within their own culture. The culture does not
concern itself with outside acceptance. Weakness in both the internal and external Christian
framework is prevalent in this mindset. The culture models behavior without concern of
consequences. This is opposite of what God modeled to mankind and what the Bible

Frisbee Descriptive Writing
Over the years, he has accumulated toys, lots of toys, not only from us but also from our children

When we throw the frisbee he will chase it pick it up then wait until the ball is thrown. Slinging

In early December, the accounting team were scheduled to have a luncheon at Ibby s. Two days
prior to the event, a calendar invite had been sent to its attendants. Due to my shy nature, I had not
accepted the invitation, but unbeknownst to me, the attendance was required because, as the time
approached, Mr. Rackers asked me to prepare to leave with them. In candor, I was not comfortable
with nor interested in having lunch in such a setting, and worse, my co worker, Mr. Whittaker was
battling a severe cold that I was trying not to contract during this event.
Unfortunately, I do acknowledge the statement of my lagging behind from the rest of the team.
However, it was due to cramping from my previous ab workout at the gym, and it was painful to
move at a faster pace. I didn t want to burden anyone with my issues, and thus, did not disclose it.
Mr. Rackers had patiently awaited my arrival to the building while everyone else had gone ahead.
We then proceeded to meet the others who were still waiting to be seated.
After waiting to be seated, the manager from Etta s arrived, and shortly thereafter, we were then

Vegetarian Experiment Summary
In this lab, we conducted multiple experiments on planarians and examined their reactions toward
variety of stimuli. First and foremost, we have to be able to identify the fundamental structure of
the planarians; especially the nervous system. Planarians are grouped into Class Turbellaria. They
have a central nervous systemthat consists of 2 to 6 ventral nerve cords and subepideral nerve net
also known as cephalization. Cephalization is more advanced because the system now has more
neurons, sense cells, larger ganglia compared to the simple nerve net system. The ventral nerve
cords are connected to ganglia that lay interiorly to the ventral epidermis that close to the midline
and run the length of the body (Scott, 2014, p. 54). The information... Show more content on

However, we still have not understood how planarians respond to food. One experiment was
conducted to observe the reactions of planarians toward food or chemical stimuli. When four
planarians were exposed to four different food source, 43% of the planarians moved to the first
location (squash baby food). 25% moved to the second location (chicken baby food), 2% moved
to the third location (control group), and 29% moved to the fourth location (mixture of squash and
chicken baby food). According to Inoue, planarians will release chemotaxis as a response when
they are exposed to chemical. In this case, planarians will operate the chemoreceptors to identify
the location of the food. When four planarians were placed in the middle, they quickly marked their
destinations. They would continue to move until they reach the place with high solute
concentration. In this experiment, we do not know if the all the planarians were hungry or full. For
some of the planarians that quickly moved away, we can determine that they were hungry. And
when they sensory cells detect the chemical, they quickly reacted. However, planarians references
of food are not important in this case. Despite the fact that all the foods are different, planarians
might tend to move toward to places that closest to them or sense the strongest chemical signal
from. As we know that planarians are carnivores, they prefer to feed on organic compounds and

Pros And Cons Of Harry Parr

Parr often discussed with Charles Vyse the pros and cons of kiln firing. Vyse was of the opinion
that gas was best, and Parr was one of the first potters to bring electricity to the Cheyne Row
studios. Vyse however, continued to fire his figures using the gas fuelled kiln he had acquired
when Bertha White became his assistant in 1919. From 1920, Vyse and Parr consistently showed
their work at the Royal Academy. Parr organised one or two Christmas shows at his studio, but
most of his work he sold through James Connell of Bond Street. His figures retailed at 25 guineas

At Charles Noke s invitation, Leslie Harradine had designed the figure HN479 Balloon Seller,
sometimes referred to as the Balloon Woman. Harradine, consummate artist that he was, could
not in good faith model a facsimile of the Vyse original, and an unacceptable practice and against
the law of industrial plagiarism. The Harradine figure may be c0nstrued the amalgamation of
two Vyse designs, the Balloon Woman of 1920, and the current design, Tulip Woman, 1921. It is
conceivable that Harradine took the essential elements from both designs by Vyse, and
amalgamated them into a new and cohesive whole, cleverly modelling a vendor figure of which
the Doulton studio wholeheartedly approved. The first version of Doultons HN479 Balloon

Violence In Pinker s The Angels Of Our Nature
In his book The Angels of our Nature, Pinker provides a unique insight to the nature of violence, its
evolution throughout time, and how modern societies regard violence. This review will be
analyzing and identifying the key points that were identified during the reading of the first four
chapters of the book. The first chapter provides the reader with a brief walk through the history of
violence throughout the centuries. Topics he touched on include of the biblical times bloody,
wrathful written history as a principle even if many of these instances never occurred. Keeping in
mind the stoning, beheading, burnings, and mutilation you could receive as punishment for a
cardinal sin, torture in general was widely accepted and practiced during... Show more content on

Many arguments arise when comparing violence between two periods of time, primarily stating
that there is a higher quantity of violence in society today. Pinker addresses this concern by
stating accurately that we should measure violence not by how many times it takes place but the
rate at which it is committed. Population has on a steady incline since humans went from a
nomadic culture to an agricultural one, so it only makes sense that more accounts of fighting
would occur with an increase of potential fighters, though killing a hundred thousand people
today is not wiping the earth of one fifth its population as it would have in the past. When it
comes the factors that have come to cause this reduction of violence in society there are two
centering focuses. One is that logical thinking is on the rise, the excuse of doing horrendous
actions in the name the name of god is no longer accepted as an infallible narrative that pardons
your crimes, making you individually responsible for your actions. In addition, when using reason,
one would realize that the reasons that our ancestors had to utilize violence no longer applies to
us. Generally, we do not have to worry about our neighbor killing us and take a preemptive action
to ensure our safety and in most cases neither does our

Compare And Contrast The Ottomans And Ottoman Empire
During the 14th to 16th century, two main empires ruled Spain, the Ottoman and Habsburg
empires. Both empires remained standing for hundreds of years before they fell. The Ottoman
Empire was an Islamic empire with their population mainly consisting of Muslims. Founded in
1299, they lasted for more than 600 years with more than 30 sultans before they fell. The Habsburg
Empire was a Roman Catholic centric empire founded around the 15th century and lasted for more
than 400 years. Both the Ottomans and Habsburg allowed minority groups to live in their empire
under their government, but had many restrictions that minimized the minority group s freedom.
The minority groups were a big factor in how Habsburg Spain and the Ottomans would maintain
their empire. Although each Empire employed religion as a way to maintain their empire, the
Ottomans were more successful in maintaining their empire as they used religion to create an army
and gain money from the minorities.
In the Islamic ruled empire, the Ottomans relied heavily on religion when it came to maintaining
their empire as they used them to build an army using minorities and gain money for their empire
them as well. In the Ottoman Empire, Christians and Jews were considered dhimmis, as dhimmis
they had their rights protected by Ottoman law and were allowed to continue their own religious
organizations, not be forced to follow Islamic law, and have freedom of choice; this system was
seen as the Ottoman Empire s greatest

Style Over Substance in Truman Capote s In Cold Blood Essay
Style Over Substance in Capote s In Cold Blood
In Murder, He Wrote, William Swanson believes the stylistic techniques employed in Truman
Capote s novel In Cold Blood are more memorable than the story itself. For Swanson, Capote not
only captures the readers attention with a story about a horrific crime, but his use of diverse
voices, sounds, and silences make it an event people will never forget.
Almost two decades after his initial exposure to Capote s novel, Swanson discovered it was still a
brilliant study of crime and punishment being more haunting than ever (32). When Swanson first
read the novel, he was more impressed with Capote s audacity and stylistic techniques than ... Show

In conducting his research for the novel, Capote managed to make friends and sources of the
relatives and neighbors of the Clutters and the killers, the lawyers, the police, and Dick Hickock
and Perry Smith (33). He did not use a tape recorder or a notebook when speaking with his sources,
but relied on his memory to keep the facts straight.
It was Capote s use of stylistic devices that the novel memorable to Swanson. Capote not only
vividly recreated the events leading up to the murders, but he also described in meticulous detail
and diamondlike prose the dozens of lives destroyed or altered in the process (33). Capote
carefully chose each word he recorded, enabling his readers to encounter the same feelings of
despair, grief, and fear the characters experience. But Capote s greatest gift was his ability to listen
and then composing what he heard into a symphony of voices, sounds, and silences (33). Swanson
heard the voices of the Clutter family pleading for their lives, the sounds from the roar of a twelve
gauge shotgun , and the subsequent silence of an upright, accomplished, and much admired family
s removal from a quiet community (33).
While other journalists have tried their hand at writing nonfiction novels, none have come close to
creating the same psychological and emotional impact of In Cold Blood. In

of self confidence and lack of self esteem. This image is furthered when she allows Andy, the
man at the bar, to have sex with her because she thought he could be different (3), despite the fact
that he doesn t know her name, and has no regard for her. Again, her lack of self esteem develops
pity and sympathy for her character as she walks to her own death.

Qualitative Research Methodology
Methodology for the Research Paper
La Brittani Poole James
Dr. Lee

Qualitative research is exact research where the information is not as numbers. Qualitative
researchers study things in their natural settings, make sense of, or interpreting information. My
research paper is about children with mental health illnesses. Qualitative research on my paper
would be the research that I found that on my topic from creditable sites that consisted of data with
no numbers included. Kevin Browne stated, There is continuing debate on the extent of the effects
of media violence on children and young people, and how to investigate these effects. The aim of
this review is to consider the research evidence from a public health perspective. A search of
published work revealed five meta analytic reviews and one quasi systematic review, all of which
were from North America. There is consistent evidence that violent imagery in television, film and
video, and computer games has substantial short term effects on arousal, thoughts, and emotions,
increasing the likelihood of aggressive or fearful behavior in younger children, especially in boys.
The evidence becomes inconsistent when considering older children and teenagers, and long term
outcomes for all ages. The multifactorial nature of aggression is emphasized, together with the
methodological difficulties of showing causation. Nevertheless, a small but significant association
is shown

Gentrification And Its Oppressed Residents Essay
The U.S. Gentrification and its Oppressed Residents For the past two decades, gentrification has
become a widely known phenomenon in the U.S. as more wealthy cohorts of population move to
quiet and cheap suburban areas instead of bearing the busy and costly lives in a big city. Changes
brought by the influx of affluent newcomers in the suburban areas are often praised for fostering
urban renewal as well as animating the areas local economy. However, the impacts of gentrification
cause several types of new problems which now afflict long time, low income residents in
gentrifying neighborhoods. With the soaring prices of the real estatemarket, landlords harassment
against low income tenants, and rising living expenses, gentrification further augments the
inequality and conflicts between the poor and rich inhabitants.
Historically, many of the suburban towns and neighborhoods around the major U.S. cities served
as homes to poor and minority residents, offering cheaper living spaces due to the marginalized
and inconvenient geographical locations with several negative reputations. Yet, given the big
cities overcrowded environment and expensive living cost, these suburban areas are now popular
destinations for people who seek for a less crowded and affordable neighborhood to dwell.
According to statistics by Kolko (2016), in 2015, the population of overall U.S. suburban
neighborhoods increased by 159 million people, while only the total of less than 80 million

you check punctuation marks on the internet.
Use Punctuation Marks Checker for Commas
Punctuation marks checker must be constantly use to check for comma placement mistakes. Take
note that in an introductory sentence, a comma must separate the introductory phrase from the
other parts of the sentence. If a group of words is present at the beginning of a sentence that gives
more information separate them with a comma.

Blindness And Sight In Oedipus By Sophocles
Most people believe eyes are the window to the soul, but in this ancient Greek tragedy, eyes can
be an indicator to someone s intelligence level. The blind do not always have the power to see
into the future just as those with sight are not always aware of their present day predicaments,
but in Ancient Greek, both of those are accurate. Sight and ignorance go hand in hand as well as
blindness and knowledge do in the story Oedipus by Sophocles. Sophocles uses irony to
emphasize positives and negatives for two men, Oedipus, King of Thebes and Tiresias, local
Oracle. Oedipus has sight but lacks the ability to fully comprehend situations in multiple scenes.
He is unable to interpret many clues given to him along the way, ultimately leading to his wife s
(and mother s) death along with his own downfall as well. Oedipus requested Tiresias to help
him stop the plague by figuring out who killed Laius, the past king of Thebes. When Tiresias
was hesitant to tell Oedipus that he was the true murderer, he recanted all the praise he gave the
prophet and said, You will not explain / what you understand, but rather intend / to betray us and
destroy the city. / ... You worst of wicked men! (Sophocles 348 350, 353). With this, the wise
Tiresias said, You have found fault with my anger, but your own, / living within you, you did not
see, but blamed me (Sophocles 356 357). His anger for not receiving what he asked of Tiresias
was blinding, even though in the end it brings his Fate to the

Nazi Propaganda In Nazi Germany
Nazi Propaganda
Propaganda tries to force a doctrine on the whole people... Propaganda works on the general
public from the standpoint of an idea and makes them ripe for the victory of this idea, (United
States Holocaust Memorial Museum 1) written by Adolf Hitler in his book Mein Kampf published
in 1925. Propaganda is defined as the spreading of ideas, information or rumors for the purpose of
helping or hurting an institution (Propaganda in Nazi Germany 1). After the Nazi seizure of power
in 1933, they used this method of persuasion to spread the ideas of National Socialism, racism,
anti Semitism, and to explain who was excluded from Hitler s perfect community. Hitler saw

Hitler believed the Aryan people and those of true German decent were predestined to rule the
world. All other races were seen as a threat to the end product of his master plan(The Holocaust
Explained). This led to deportation, being forced to live in ghettos, and eventually the killing of
races seen as degenerates to the Nazi party. Propaganda was used to create stereotypes and bad
images of Jews and other unworthy races, while creating a fear, distrust and eventually a hatred of
these supposed enemies. Anti Semitic and other racist propaganda was used to justify the status of
pariah being given to Jews and others deemed as undesirables (The Chief). This form of
manipulation also helped to portray Germany as the defender of the west after the German invasion
of the Soviet Union. The propaganda painted a catastrophic image of what would have happened if
the Soviets would have won, hoping with this, German citizens would better support the Nazis in
the war efforts (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Typography Of Media
These days, the media plays a big part in the culture of the world. The media is a powerful source
that we ve been using for years and years since technology has been invented, starting with
newspapers and television. Throughout the years, media has changed since the transition from
newspapers to television broadcastingbecause of the changes of entertainmentand what people are
into as time goes on. In the book Amusing Ourselves to Death, Postman looks at how print culture
or typography has changed the media, how it evolved to televisionand what it s doing to our culture
and the way that people think. In the beginning of the book and all throughout, Postman brought up
the concept of media metaphor when talking about how the media... Show more content on

According to Postman, before images were used in our everyday media, Americans were more
logical and politically engaged because they were focused more on speech and had more
rational thoughts. He says that our speech patterns were different when we printed everything,
we wrote better and read better which is why we were better thinkers. I agree to his analysis and
conclusions about how television has changed our thinking. We ve became a society that won t
be persuaded unless we re entertained or it has some kind of emotional appeal to it. Ever since
televisions and printed images came into existence, we get easily bored when something isn t
captivating. This can also be a bad thing for example, we believe things easily when it sounds
good or shocking to us without logically thinking about it. This causes us to have different
perspectives thanks to how the media portrays certain situations. I also agree with Postman when
he talked about how people are less engaged because of the media changes. One of the examples
that Postman used was about the Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas debate, it was a
simple and short oral debate that lasted for 2 hours and people sat through the whole thing without
breaks. In this new media era, it s not that easy for us to sit through long oral debates or lectures or
we ll get bored because our attention span is not that long. Since

Persuasive Essay On The Driving Age
Do you really wanna be locked up at your house until you re 18 just because you can t drive yet.
The driving age should not be raised it should stay at 16, teens that are sixteen years old should
be able to start driving. The first time behind the wheel, with no parents, just you and the car. Of
course, kids will have to be more careful, and more responsible while driving. The reasons why I
say that the driving age shouldn t change is because kids in high school are in sports or in after
school activities and parents may not be able to pick or drop them off, they can help their parents
with errands, and lastly, kids are working at that age.
Teens in high school are in sports or in after school activities. Having the kids to wait for the
parents to come and pick them up to go drop them off may be a pain cause the kids will be late
to practice. In our school, there are many after school activities such as tutoring, sports, clubs
and other events. If students were unable to drive, then most of the after school activities would
be unsuccessful. This student is talking about how being late to an activity or a sport will affect
you from playing or even joining a club. This really affects the students because they have after
school activities, work, games, meetings, and on top of that they get hours and hours of
homework. When being late to a game, or even work you re pretty much going to have to spend
extra time for being late or maybe not even showing up cause your parents didn t pick you up on
time. They can help their parents with errands.
Teens being able to help their parents with errands would be a lot more helpful. When parents
are not able to pick up someone or go get something from the store their kids could do that for
them. With their driving license students can at least run their small errands like paying a visit to
the library for research or going to the store to get something, even the small thing has a big
influence on us. Even the kids could go and do errands that they need to do, having them drive
would be so much better. Don t want constantly use their parents as a taxi While the kids having to
go somewhere they will be asking their parents to take them somewhere every

My Vision At Centipede Soccer
Overview
My vision this summer came alive with the help of the Kokomo YMCA, when I was granted the
opportunity to coach Centipede Soccer. Centipede Soccer is the perfect introduction to the game
of soccer for children of the ages 3 5. The mission of this program is that the children will learn
the fundamentals of the game in a non competitive atmosphere, while working on motor skills,
coordination and listening skills. The benefits of the Y s youth sports programs for the little ones
are big both on and off the field. My role as the coach was to find fun ways to make this a great
first time soccer experience for all the children by showcasing the different skills and objectives of
the game but also advocating new skills to maintain a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My first and probably most important duty as a coach to this younger age group was to make all
activities fun and easy to understand, but to also think about safety and the well being of all my
players. Because this was many of the team s first soccer experience, going over the proper
equipment was key to do to ensure they were all protected with the right shoes and shin guards.
While watching the first few practices and games, it was becoming clear to see which areas
needed the most amount of work on and picking up on these things are vital to plan creative drills
that will improve each skill. All of my hard work with planning the lessons for the day to creating a
positive environment for the children to learn and thrive follows right along with the mission of
Centipede Soccer by instilling the importance of teamwork.

Within this Sport and Fitness Internship, it was my agreement to coach a minimum of 40 hours
at Darrough Chapel Park through a partnership with the Kokomo YMCA s Soccer Program. This
permitted me the chance to put all my knowledge and skills to the test, whether it was being
recalled from my soccer experience growing up or getting the first hand feel of how to apply what
I have learned from my courses at IU Kokomo University in the past semesters. Regardless of
which method gave me better insight on coaching, this internship has become a stepping stone in
showcasing my efforts don t go unnoticed and that I am going to do great things

loved by their father [80 110]. No, he is not their biological father one other criterion of the
formalist world, which permits the distorted and destroyed relationships between the native
parents and children. However, his own world s parameters identify him as their ultimate father.
This cozy Cider House world is a tiny spot on earth where children love and respect each other, if
only by virtue of the sense of alienation that the other world has cursed them with. Any encounter
with the outside world is happy only for one of them: the rest of the kids will not be adopted that

facing the protagonists: their Cider home sweet home and the bitter world. The same applies to
the central figure, Homer who is an extremely likable person and a fast learner, soon to become
as skilled as his teacher. Yet without a diploma another anchor of the outside world stressing the

The Causes Of The Tiananmen Square Protest Of 1989
On June 5, 1989, soldiers and tanks from China s People s Liberation Army physically oppressed
the student led protesters. The events surrounding this day are referred to as the Tiananmen Square
Protest of 1989, a democracy movement calling for political and social reforms in the Republic of
China. The deaths that occurred as a consequence of the Tiananmen Square Protest was not the fault
of the students, but rather, the disastrous situation of China beforehand, the common belief that
demonstrations would succeed, and the government s obstinate decisions. China was already
suffering from harsh living conditions prior to the massacre, in which these conditions pushed the
students to act. To begin with, the country had been under intense economic pressure. After
changing into a capitalist based economy, the economy increasing changed due to rising inflation,
declining wages, and rising unemployment rates. To complicate things, the government
deregulated prices of many products. The Chinese feared inflation would occur with the removal
of price controls, and used all their savings to purchase items ahead of time. As a result, the
biggest department store sold two hundred times its usual monthly income. Labour unrest grew,
and between 20 to 30 million were laid off in state enterprises that year. By 1989, people were
ready for political reforms. Even though China s economy was growing, there were strict
limitations on daily aspects of one s life. The rising inflation and

I Am The Messenger
I Am the Messenger is a great book that tells of a guy named Ed, who loves to play cards, but
suddenly starts getting messages in the mail that are marked on playing cards.. Ed is practically
a nobody not having much educational success, his father died some time ago and his mother
hasn t had great success in life either. The story basically starts off with a bank robbery, Ed and
his friend Marv are at the bank when the gunman arrives and demands to Marv his car keys. The
gunman gets the keys and jumps into the car, in which he drops his gun, Ed then takes the gun
and holds down the gunman until the cops arrive. At the trial, Ed testifies against him, and as
they pass each other the Gunman tells Ed, Every time you look in the mirror, remember you are
looking at a dead man . This starts Ed s journey. Ed lives alone in his apartment (that is owned by
his boss) with his dog named the Doorman and Ed is a cab driver. He is insanely in love with
his friend, Audrey and it is clear that she loves him back but they won t embrace their feelings.
Several times a week, Ed, Marv, Audrey, and a close friend named Ritchie play cards together.
Soon after Ed anonymously receives his first playing card, Ace of diamonds. Written on it are three
addresses (it s always three) Edgar street, Harrison Avenue, and Macedoni Street. The first address
is at an old house where a man that gets drunk every night comes home and beats his wife, leading

The Veldt By Ray Bradbury. How Are Children Better Than...
Today, some children have had a tendency to favor materialistic items over respect for parents;
however, Ray Bradbury, the author of The Veldt disagrees with this concept. Bradbury believes that
when children are too involved in items, they become brainwashed and it has a negative effect on
society. Mr. and Mrs. Hadley (the parents) from The Veldt , struggle to discipline their kids, which
results in the children not having a priority to respect them. Through using allusions, setting, and
technology, the author warn children that materialistic items should not be valued higher than
respect for their parents.
Ray Bradbury uses technology to show that the children rely more on the technology and
materialistic items, then they do of their parents. The nursery in The Veldt possesses things that
purr and recede into crystalline distance and ...this house which clothed and fed and rocked them
to sleep and played and sang and was good to them. (Bradbury 1). Through the description of the
nursery, it provides the reader with a sense of the nursery being high tech, expensive and more
dependable than the parents should be. This shows that the Hadley family does not lack money
so whatever they need, it is always right there. Bradbury also states, Peter looked at his shoes. He
never looked at his father any more, nor his mother and Would I have to tie my own shoes instead
of letting the shoe tier do it? (Bradbury 9). In these quotes, it shows that by now the children have

  • 2. Harper Lee, The Sentry By Wilfred Owen, And Good Guys Dead... Countless authors, all throughout time, can be seen to write about their passions, their experiences or their opinions on a certain topic. The question has been asked: do any of these authors early life experiences or the time setting when they grew up in have any impact on why the writer developed the work? A range of authors and texts are being covered in this report and the content will vary from World War One experiences to more recent times of racial segregation in America. This report has been formed to answer questions and form relationships between authors and the reason(s) or any influence(s) as to why the following authors have developed their work: Harper Lee, Wilfred Owens, Ernest Hemingway. I decided to investigate the following texts: To Kill a Mockingbirdby Harper Lee, The Sentry by Wilfred Owen, To Good Guys Dead by Ernest Hemingway. If the aim is to find out whether early life experiences of these authors or the time setting when they grew up in promoted or influenced the development of their work, three questions must be asked for an accurate conclusion to be drawn: How heavily did the Harper Lee s early life experiences influence her writing? Where there any government influences that impacted on the authors writing? Why exactly did the author write the text? Question one How heavily did the Harper Lee s early life experiences influence her writing? Text To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Harper Lee grew up in the small southwestern Alabama ... • 3. Stereotypes Of Geography Regions are necessary to understand a piece of land in a meaningful manner and to successfully advance civilization using the surrounding natural resources. Canada, being the second biggest country in the world, is home to numerous biomes, many forms of natural resources and a very diverse population. However, Canadais united by the different patchworks of regions that creates it and is dependent on them to grow. Just like how geographers define regions, the regions themselves define the country. The contrast between the northern tundra contrasted with the milder border defining south gives the impression that Canada is much colder than it actually is. For example, the stereotype of Canada is a very sparsely populated land that is covered... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, the regions that urban citizens are concerned about may not be the same type of regions that geographers are studying. For the majority of the population in Canada, regions do not define what type of land they live but the types of resources, food, and culture they interact with in their daily lives. Living in an urban or suburban society, the natural resources nor the types of terrain matter little to them. However, the lingering aspects of early settlers still affects the city dwellers greatly. For instance, the difference in culture between coastal cities and interior cities could affect the lifestyle and habits of its inhabitants in unpredictable ways. Even in current times, the importance of regions for newly immigrants can determine key variables such as accessibility to employment, English language classes, people of similar cultures or situations, proximity to food /clothing/healthcare can determine livability in the Toronto Metropolitan Area. Instead of natural resources, the crucial resources for these refuges are the ability to be able to survive by obtain the ability to communicate and the ability to make money. As for biomes, the importance of living with like minded people can provide security and support as well as a comfort of living that some other parts of the area does not ... How Color Can Effect Us Essays Based on the findings that one has discovered in life itself, in essence, color helps with the flows of life in a way that it can determines your thoughts, emotions, and decisions. In my research I gained a vast amount knowledge and from what I ve learned; now I can explain colors in depth, with a great amount of detail. If colors were non existent, then, there would be a very grey look upon life. Colors brings forth light, and the light brings forth living. The world displays colors for a reason and it s very important to life. Every individual has a favorite color and the choice of that particular color be due to many reasons, one could come from wanting to relive an event you experienced that you found exciting, a nostalgic feeling, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Color therapists apply the colors to certain spots on the body called chakras. Chakras can be used to figure out what type of treatment the patient will need based on their medical condition. The types of colors needed for the treatment will be based on each color effect. Within our body, color acts as an active power influencing our state of mind. The colors are used like a medicine to heal. Color therapy can be used to cure diseases such as stress, fatigue, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety, and many more. The type of therapy is a natural way of healing illnesses and one would think it s a unique way of performing therapy. The history of color therapy came from Ancient Egypt. What are Chakras? In the Introduction to Color Therapy Section, It addressed color therapy mainly, and chakras briefly. Chakras are sources of energy that flow in a line down the median of our body. There are some traditional writings about chakras stating that there are 88,000 chakras in the human body. The word chakra in Sanskrit translates to wheel or disc. There are seven chakras in the Western Culture: The crown, brow, throat, heart, solar plexus, spleen, and root. Chakras are like your five senses, sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. When one source of energy is blocked then we can develop a physical illness or a mental illness. Chakras are associated with colors. The crown chakra is located at the top ... Why People Follow After completing the two readings, Why People Follow and Salsa, Soul, and Spirit , I now have a better understanding of leadership techniques that could strengthen communities as well as the performance of companies. I wasn t very surprised when seeing the four needs of followers from Why People Follow : trust, compassion, hope, and stability. I thought that those were all characteristics that were ideal to any strong and effective leader. Of the four, I felt the most surprise with compassion. I didn t know how much being compassionate could have a lasting impact to those that follow you. I thought before that leaders would focus more on instructing their workers rather than give love to those that listen. I saw on the reading that those that have compassionate leaders are far... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, in Salsa, Soul, and Spirit , one of the eight communal policies was about leadership as a social responsibility, the idea that all leaders should strive to bring equality and justice to everyone, no matter what race or social status. I found that policy to align with the need of being compassionate, seen in Why People Follow . I feel that one needs to truly be caring for the unfortunate before starting any equality programs. One shouldn t help out others just to get some public fame. People need to understand the seriousness of income and racial inequality before heading out and actually leading social responsibility. Another communal policy, generating a shared vision, also aligns with the need of having hope. During both instances, you as a leader need to have some direction going before you start leading. You and your partners need to trust yourselves that you have the ability to move forward and inspire others. Believing that everybody could would together and get things done builds confidence not only for you but for those around you. • 6. Don T-Stop Believing Poem Meaning Some will win / Some will lose / Some were born to sing the blues (Journey lines 24 26), and some were born to be poets. In this case, it is Maggie Smith s Good Bones and Journey s Don t Stop Believing that serve as great examples to that. All poetry, including songs, are artistic in one way or another; short or long, rhyme or no rhyme, but they all have a meaning. They also all contain poetic devices, which is what really makes them artistic. Journey s use of allusions, repetitions, and metaphors is why Don t stop believing is more artistic and poetic than Maggie Smith s Good Bones . These two pieces of art, Don t Stop Believing and Good Bones , share a very similar message which is to believe that there are good things in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Repetition is a pretty basic poetry device that just repeated words or phrases to emphasize their importance. Metaphors on the other hand are a thing that can make ideas go above and beyond. According to Dr. Peter Fuda metaphors make big, complex things simple and are more familiar (Fuda 1). That is why they are so vital in making these two works good. Repetition especially in Good Bones is used a lot for little parts of the poem that make them stand out, and show importance. Maggie Smith repeats Life is short twice back to back (lines 1 2). Also at the end when she makes her biggest point and repeats This place could be beautiful / right? You could make this place beautiful (Smith lines 16 17). She wants people to see that for the repetition of all the negative aspects of life, there is also the good which is why she repeats this key phrase and the end of the poem. Journey s use of repetition is a little different and broad in the fact that it is the chorus that repeats. Although it is a longer text it still is an important part which is why they chose to use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Blanding s Turtle Populations By comparing the observed heterozygosity of two Blanding s turtle populations, it was determined that Area 1 had significantly greater observed heterozygosity than Area 2. The lower observed heterozygosity found in Area 2 may have been caused by the founder effect, resulting in a loss of genetic variation. The founder effectoccurs when a new population is established by a small group of migrants from a larger population. The founder effect involves a random sampling of alleles during the reproduction of consecutive generations; when a small population is isolated, it may amplify the loss of genetic variation as individuals may become increasingly genotypically similar after each subsequent generation. Eventually, the alleles may become fixed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Population bottlenecks occur when a population undergoes a large reduction in size as a result of environmental events or human activities. As a result, genetic variation may decrease as certain alleles may be over presented, under presented, or completely absent. Consequently, the genetic variation may continue to decline throughout subsequent generations as smaller populations, with less genetic diversity, sexually reproduce, passing on a limited amount of genes to future offspring. Furthermore, heterozygosity in these populations may decrease as a result of inbreeding. Inbreeding occurs when two closely related individuals reproduce; inbreeding may cause the accumulation of homozygous recessive genes and a decrease in genetic variation. Additionally, infrequently occurring alleles, rather than common alleles, may face a greater chance of being lost, which may further decrease the level of genetic diversity. As the population continues to decline, the genetic drift may be intensified as a result of increasing genetic limitations. Similarly, Rubin et al. (2001) compared smaller, isolated populations of Blanding s turtles found in the Greater Chicago area to larger populations found in Michigan, Nova Scotia and Wisconsin, and determined, by using amplified polymorphic DNA, that the smaller populations had a loss of genetic variation in comparison to the ... • 9. Analysis Of Kafka On The Shore It is natural for humans to question the meaning and nature of their existence in a world that is constantly evolving and asking more questions of its inhabitants. In his 467 page novel Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami explores this complex and deeply confusing issue through the lens of two protagonists Kafka, an outcast 15 year old boy with a grotesque Oedipus Complex; and Nakata, a pensioner who was subject to a disastrous trauma in the Second World War. Through their stories, Murakami guides the reader through challenging concepts under the guise of magical realism: a technique he uses to develop themes and meanings that would otherwise be inaccessible to a writer with a more conventional approach. He struggles with the concept of his own existence, and is in constant pursuit of meaning a search which forces him to question his morality, intentions, and ideals his true self. Immediately as the novel begins, his subconscious takes center stage. In the introductory paragraph, we are introduced to Crow, a mysterious being who can only be described as Kafka s subconscious. Crow speaks to Kafka throughout the novel, and brings him reason and guidance when his literal existence simply does not suffice. Initially, Crow reminds Kafka: Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing directions. You change direction but the sandstorm chases you. You turn again, but the storm adjusts. Over and over you play this out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn t something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you. This storm is you. Something inside of you. So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm, closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn t get in, and walk through it, step by step. There s no sun there, no moon, no direction, no sense of time. Just fine white sand swirling up into the sky like pulverized bones. That s the kind of sandstorm you need to imagine. How Did The Black Death Contribute To The Renaissance Beginning in 1347, Europe faced a series of crises such as the Black Death, the Hundred Years War, the Fall of Constantinople, and the Great Schism. Eventually, these crises would end and lead to a cultural revival. This cultural revival that Europe experienced was known as the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a period that revived elements of the classical past, as well as introduced new forms of thought and expression. The Black Death, a fatal disease that struck Europe in the years 1344 52, is one of the factors that led to the Renaissance. It originated in the region between Black and Caspian seas. This approach prevents the internal dimension of our personal relationship with God. Our outward expression of the inward spirituality, the external dimension, is unattainable as we are not able to have a personal relationship with God without his moral system. 2. Morality assessments are typically based on a personal value system leaving little room for cultural diversity. The internal dimension is to be free of judgment and the external dimension is to love one another. If so, this requires cultures to be tolerant of all other cultures. 3. Relativism rejects universal morals. It does not acknowledge the basic principle of the external dimension, practiced morals from a Godly value system. That Godly value system can only come from the internal dimension. 4. A cultural moral system is accepted by those within their own culture. First and foremost, we have to be able to identify the fundamental structure of the planarians; especially the nervous system. Planarians are grouped into Class Turbellaria. They have a central nervous systemthat consists of 2 to 6 ventral nerve cords and subepideral nerve net also known as cephalization. Cephalization is more advanced because the system now has more neurons, sense cells, larger ganglia compared to the simple nerve net system. The ventral nerve cords are connected to ganglia that lay interiorly to the ventral epidermis that close to the midline and run the length of the body (Scott, 2014, p. 54). The information... One experiment was conducted to observe the reactions of planarians toward food or chemical stimuli. When four planarians were exposed to four different food source, 43% of the planarians moved to the first location (squash baby food). 25% moved to the second location (chicken baby food), 2% moved to the third location (control group), and 29% moved to the fourth location (mixture of squash and chicken baby food). According to Inoue, planarians will release chemotaxis as a response when they are exposed to chemical. In this case, planarians will operate the chemoreceptors to identify the location of the food. When four planarians were placed in the middle, they quickly marked their destinations. They would continue to move until they reach the place with high solute concentration. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many arguments arise when comparing violence between two periods of time, primarily stating that there is a higher quantity of violence in society today. Pinker addresses this concern by stating accurately that we should measure violence not by how many times it takes place but the rate at which it is committed. Population has on a steady incline since humans went from a nomadic culture to an agricultural one, so it only makes sense that more accounts of fighting would occur with an increase of potential fighters, though killing a hundred thousand people today is not wiping the earth of one fifth its population as it would have in the past. When it comes the factors that have come to cause this reduction of violence in society there are two centering focuses. One is that logical thinking is on the rise, the excuse of doing horrendous actions in the name the name of god is no longer accepted as an infallible narrative that pardons your crimes, making you individually responsible for your actions. The aim of this review is to consider the research evidence from a public health perspective. A search of published work revealed five meta analytic reviews and one quasi systematic review, all of which were from North America. There is consistent evidence that violent imagery in television, film and video, and computer games has substantial short term effects on arousal, thoughts, and emotions, increasing the likelihood of aggressive or fearful behavior in younger children, especially in boys. The evidence becomes inconsistent when considering older children and teenagers, and long term outcomes for all ages. The multifactorial nature of aggression is emphasized, together with the methodological difficulties of showing causation. Nevertheless, a small but significant association is shown ... • 38. Gentrification And Its Oppressed Residents Essay The U.S. Gentrification and its Oppressed Residents For the past two decades, gentrification has become a widely known phenomenon in the U.S. as more wealthy cohorts of population move to quiet and cheap suburban areas instead of bearing the busy and costly lives in a big city. Changes brought by the influx of affluent newcomers in the suburban areas are often praised for fostering urban renewal as well as animating the areas local economy. However, the impacts of gentrification cause several types of new problems which now afflict long time, low income residents in gentrifying neighborhoods. With the soaring prices of the real estatemarket, landlords harassment against low income tenants, and rising living expenses, gentrification further augments the inequality and conflicts between the poor and rich inhabitants. Historically, many of the suburban towns and neighborhoods around the major U.S. cities served as homes to poor and minority residents, offering cheaper living spaces due to the marginalized and inconvenient geographical locations with several negative reputations. Yet, given the big cities overcrowded environment and expensive living cost, these suburban areas are now popular destinations for people who seek for a less crowded and affordable neighborhood to dwell. • 41. Blindness And Sight In Oedipus By Sophocles Most people believe eyes are the window to the soul, but in this ancient Greek tragedy, eyes can be an indicator to someone s intelligence level. The blind do not always have the power to see into the future just as those with sight are not always aware of their present day predicaments, but in Ancient Greek, both of those are accurate. Sight and ignorance go hand in hand as well as blindness and knowledge do in the story Oedipus by Sophocles. Sophocles uses irony to emphasize positives and negatives for two men, Oedipus, King of Thebes and Tiresias, local Oracle. Oedipus has sight but lacks the ability to fully comprehend situations in multiple scenes. He is unable to interpret many clues given to him along the way, ultimately leading to his wife s (and mother s) death along with his own downfall as well. Oedipus requested Tiresias to help him stop the plague by figuring out who killed Laius, the past king of Thebes. When Tiresias was hesitant to tell Oedipus that he was the true murderer, he recanted all the praise he gave the prophet and said, You will not explain / what you understand, but rather intend / to betray us and destroy the city. / ... You worst of wicked men! (Sophocles 348 350, 353). With this, the wise Tiresias said, You have found fault with my anger, but your own, / living within you, you did not see, but blamed me (Sophocles 356 357). The driving age should not be raised it should stay at 16, teens that are sixteen years old should be able to start driving. The first time behind the wheel, with no parents, just you and the car. Of course, kids will have to be more careful, and more responsible while driving. The reasons why I say that the driving age shouldn t change is because kids in high school are in sports or in after school activities and parents may not be able to pick or drop them off, they can help their parents with errands, and lastly, kids are working at that age. Teens in high school are in sports or in after school activities. Having the kids to wait for the parents to come and pick them up to go drop them off may be a pain cause the kids will be late to practice. In our school, there are many after school activities such as tutoring, sports, clubs and other events. If students were unable to drive, then most of the after school activities would be unsuccessful. This student is talking about how being late to an activity or a sport will affect you from playing or even joining a club. This really affects the students because they have after school activities, work, games, meetings, and on top of that they get hours and hours of homework. When being late to a game, or even work you re pretty much going to have to spend extra time for being late or maybe not even showing up cause your parents didn t pick you up on time. They can help their parents with errands. Teens being able to help their parents with errands would be a lot more helpful. When parents are not able to pick up someone or go get something from the store their kids could do that for them. With their driving license students can at least run their small errands like paying a visit to the library for research or going to the store to get something, even the small thing has a big influence on us.
