The Importance Of Cultural Differences Between Chinese And...
Understanding and upholding respect for different cultures should be a social norm. Fascinatingly,
the amount of various cultures around the world is humbling with no two being alike. Although,
Chinese culture has evolved through many, many years and some ancient traditions still uphold.
Face, guanxi, which broadly speaking, means connections and many other cultural normalities are
constantly changing in China, yet there is basic threshold of cultural competency that is still
important to acquire before any amount of business can be done there. Researching these specific
cultural characteristics helped me understand several key cultural concepts that must be understood
in order for useful personal and business dealings. Having a basic knowledge of Chinese history,
political, economic and social challenges the country faces is necessary background knowledge
before evening entering the country. Knowing the Chinese etiquette and understanding our cultural
differences from Western culturein comparison to the Chinese culture can only help enhance
business relations and avoid any embarrassing faux pas.
Art and Literature
There are a wide variety of differences between the Chinese and Western cultures forms of art and
literature. The differences in art between western and Chinese culture grow with the addition of the
importance of calligraphy. In the US calligraphy is not something of great importance at all. In fact
it is a very secluded and almost unknown trait or talent.

Forensic Dentistry
Forensic dentistry, also known as forensic odontology is an important ,reliable source of
evidence in a criminal investigation which is both accessible and unique. One of the early
applications of forensic dentistry was in the death of Agrippa, the mother of Roman Emperor

forensic dentistry is not a new occurrence. ( Freeman). Forensic dentistry is related to my Shop

In these cases, accurate dental records can often help to make a positive identification on
unknown damaged bodies. In addition, dentures help to find victims without identification due
to some bone melting and what, not dentures do not damage that easily. In cases like this, dental
records indicate if the person had dentures or what other easily identified characteristics there are
within a person s jaw. In some cases, it is naturally easier to identify a person with dentures, as
they are custom made for the wearer.Tooth structure is very durable due to enamel ,which
provides a strong coating over the teeth. Similarly, dentures are durable enough to survive a lot
of wear and tear. Dental records were most likely the primary source of identification after the
911 attacks in New York in 2001 ( Mady). In horrific cases like 9/11 dental records often have to
be used, because every other source of DNA, like hair, will burn in the disaster. When a body

I Am Offering This Poem
Jimmy Santiago Baca, writer of I am offering this poem , was born in New Mexico in the year
1952.When Baca was only a child, he was abandoned by his parents. He lived with his
grandmother for a few years after that and was later placed in an orphanage. However, he ended
up living in the streets and was arrested for drug possession when he was twenty one years old.
He then spent six and a half years in prison. This is where he taught himself to read and write. He
composed many poems during his time in jail. His style of writing is also heavily influenced by
his life experiences. Baca s poem I am offering this poem has four stanzas and seven lines in each
stanza. Each stanza ends in the same verse I loveyou . The entire poem exudes the feelingof
yearning and infatuation. Baca is said to have composed this poem during his time in prison,
which meant he was unable to reach his loved one. Therefore he was offering this poem to his
loved one. This... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He makes it clear that he has nothing else to give her besides this poem, and he wishes that the
poem would remind his loved one to take care of herself when he s not present. The second
stanza also suggests that he wants to feel needed by his loved one. He wanted to become a
necessity to his beloved even though he wasn t there. This is why he uses a metaphor to relate
his poem to a pot full of yellow corn . When he says I love you again in the second stanza. It
sounds more urgent then it did in the first stanza. In the third stanza, Baca urges his beloved to
keep the poem and tuck it away . This leads to the assumption that he wants his loved one to feel
his love for a long amount of time. He wants this girl to treasure this poem and his love. When he
repeats I love you for the third time the feelings are building up and becoming more and more
intense which leads to the fourth and final

The Authoritative Parenting And The Style Of The Parenting...
The parenting style that my parents use is definitely authoritative. My parents have shown
authority towards me and my siblings but have always been flexible with their rules. My parents
have never stressed us out by being too strict with their rules. The first question I asked my
parents was, how would you react if one of my siblings or I asked to come home later than you
originally told us to come home? My parents responded that they would ask why we want to
come home later and then tell them they can come home later at a certain time but no later than
the extended time. This fits exactly with the authoritative parenting style because my parents
would extend the time which is being flexible and then also they would enforce a new time for
us to come home which shows authority. Next I asked my parents, what would you do if one of
my siblings or I got in trouble at school? My parents said they would have a talk with whoever
got in trouble and make sure they know not to ever do it again. Also, my parents said they would
discipline whoever got in trouble by doing more chores or taking away their phone for a day.
This fits with the authoritative parenting style as well because my parents are making us
understand what we did wrong and learn from it. They would also give a consequence because of
it but nothing that is too harsh because they trust us to learn from what we did. After that, I asked
my parents, what would your reaction be if I did not do my chores at the house?

The Great Gatsby Journal Entry
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
The dusty woven curtains at the end of the hall flapped halfheartedly in the breeze. The window
was open, letting in any random bug that happened to pass by, since it had no screen. Margery s
doing, probably. She was Queen of the Hot Flashes. Stopping in front of her apartment, I was
annoyed to see ketchup smeared under the brass numeral two.
Margery was such a slob when she d been drinking. She d pick up fast food, but be so bombed
that half the time she couldn t find her mouth. Burger wrappers, nibs of French fries, and oozing
condiment packets littered the floor of her posh Cadillac...probably the floor of her apartment, now,

As I dropped to my knees to check Marjory s pulse, a miasma of stale booze wafted towards me.
She was dead, alright. Dead drunk. I grabbed her by the shoulders, and, with an energy fueled by
fury, shook her until her teeth rattled. All I got for my efforts were a few moans and incoherent
mumbles and a piercing pain in my right hand.
Clambering to my feet, I pulled a bloody sliver from my palm. It left a nasty looking hole ripe
for infection, so I crossed the few short steps to the sink to wash it out. The ubiquitous orange
speckled shag rug did not extend into this area. Instead, the floor was covered in a linoleum of
fake bricks, one of the few improvements that actually pleased my eye. My gaze drifted to the
frying pan still smoking on the stove, and I felt a flash of anger again. Margery could ve burned
the place down with her reckless behavior.
Payback time, I thought, as I turned on the tap and let the cold water sting my wound. I searched
the metal cabinet under the sink with my free hand until I found a dented aluminum saucepan left
behind by a previous tenant. Perfect. Filling it with cold water, I returned to the bar and stood over

Vanity Exposed in Vanity Fair Essay
Vanity Exposed in Vanity Fair
The title Thackeray chose for his novel Vanity Fair is taken from The PilgrimВґs Progress by John
Bunyan. In BunyanВґs book, one of the places Christian passes through on his pilgrimage to the
Celestial City is Vanity Fair, where it is possible to buy all sorts of vanities. A very sad thing
happens there: the allegorical person Faithful is killed by the people. In the novel VanityFair
Thackeray writes about the title he has chosen: But my kind reader will please to remember that
this history has Vanity Fair for a title, and that Vanity Fair is a very vain, wicked, foolish place,
full of all sorts of humbugs and falsenesses and pretensions (98). The choice of title is appopriate,

She is well aware of the sort of person she is: IВґm no angel (11). As soon as she is out of school
she starts scheming to find a husband above her station, since her ambition is to advance in
society. Having failed to win the hand of Joseph Sedley, she marries Rawdon Crawley, thinking
he will inherit a lot of money from his aunt. Instead they both fall out of favour, and Becky has
to use her wits. Throughout the novel she is the one who charms people, and who is held in
high esteem by the upper class in which she yearns to belong . The word vanity suits Becky
well; she seems to care for no one, not even her friends, and she neglects her own son. A very
hard judgement is passed on her by Lady Jane: She has deceived her husband, as she has
deceived everybody; her soul is black with vanity, worldliness, and all sorts of crime (752).
When Rawdon leaves her it becomes harder for her to retain her reputation. When she notices
that people avoid her she works hard to be regarded as respectable. She is not used to a life where
she is not surrounded by admirers, and she is bored. She makes Joseph Sedley listen to her
lamentations on how she has been trampled on. He believes her and is made very unhappy. Becky
is suspected of being responsible for his death. BeckyВґs life is full of scandal, and all her
scheming and striving for wealth and honour come to nothing: she has struggled in vain. Her vanity
has resulted in her ruin.

The War Of The Worlds By H. G. Wells
The 19th century was a transformative one in human history, resulting in changes of globalization
through colonialism, numerous scientific achievements which led to industrialization, and an
emergence of new philosophical thoughts which placed emphasis on human nature. The War of
the Worlds, by H. G. Wells, was a reflection of its time, and it shows the idea of imperialism at the
time by exploring how the differences between Martians and humans causes a moral disconnect
which was an allegory to express the British lack of empathy toward their colonies, how radical
ideologies took advantage of that disconnect for their own profit, and why imperialism is morally
hypocritical. Martins were able to fight humans so successfully because of their advanced
technology. The Martian cavalry units were composed of many monstrous tripod[s], higher than
many houses, striding over the young pine trees, and smashing them aside in its career.
Furthermore, one of the ways the author believes the Martians can kill effectively is through the
use of heat rays, which causes whatever is combustible flashes into flame at its touch, lead runs
like water, it softens iron, cracks and melts glass [sic]. However, while Martians had complex
technologies, they were physically simple; They were heads merely heads. Entrails they had none.
Martians were also fair weak, being bipeds with flimsy, silicious skeletons (almost like those of the
silicious sponges) and feeble musculature. The idea

How Jesus Was Conceived By The Holy Spirit, And Born Of A...
In chapter four, Stein discusses how Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of a
virgin. In the beginning of the chapter he shows where this idea comes from in the bible (p.63
64). After showing his readers where the idea that Jesus was born of a virgin, he goes on to say
who does and does not believe this. The critical views of this contradict what is believed by
Christians (p. 64 65). He discusses why Pagans and Jews do not believe that Jesuswas born of a
virgin Mary (p. 65). He then goes on to tell the story of the birth of Jesus (p. 73). How Joseph
took Mary to Bethlehem, while there she gave birth to Jesus in a stable, and how wise men
came to see Jesus (p. 73 78). He concludes the chapter by defending the Christian belief of Jesus
being born of a virgin (p. 78). All of the information provided in chapter four is important because
the birth of Jesus, of course, plays a huge role in the entire book because it is discussing the life
of Jesus. Although the birth of Jesus might be controversial, no matter how Jesus was conceived
he still lived and breathed and walked the earth. Chapter four plays a huge role in the book as an
entirety because it is the beginning of the life of Christ. In chapter five, Stein discusses the years
in Jesus life that Christians do not know much about. He begins by discussing the normalcy of
Jesus young life (p. 81). He refers to a story in Luke and shows the different interpretations of this
text in order to show the different

Leadership Is The Art Of Influencing Other Individual...
According to Sullivan and Garland (2010) leadership entails guiding others to realize, a particular
goal using interpersonal skills. Weihrich and Koontz (2005) argue that leadership is the art of
influencing others to readily and actively endeavour towards meeting goals set by the team. As
noted by Spector (2006), there is a shared theme that leadershipentails influencing other individual
belief systems, behaviours, feelings and beliefs. For things to run properly in an organization
effective leadership is paramount. In the healthcare setting, this is not any different. It is therefore
important that mention is made to clinical leadership within mental health settings. This is

benefit from leaders such as managers encouraging subordinate leaders to develop diverse
leadership styles to deal with different conditions.
This necessitates situational leadership approach to be adopted by successful leaders as they adjust
their leadership style to deal with particular circumstances. For instance, circumstances deemed

transactional leadership (Crevani et al 2010).

The Culture And Culture Of Puerto Rican Culture
Puerto Rican culture is very unique and diverse and is mainly influenced by its past. It is a melting
pot of Taino Indian, Spanish, African, and American cultures, which is what makes Puerto Rico
unique. Puerto Rican music, clothing, food, traditions, holidays, languages, and religions are all
influenced from the diversity of the population. The official languages are Spanish and English
because of the long period of time when Spain ruled and then later, when it became U.S. territory.
The majority of the population of Puerto Ricois also Roman Catholic or Protestant again, because
it was ruled by the Spanish Crown for over an extended period of time. Puerto Rican food has
many different ingredients derived from the different ethnic groups. They use many fresh
ingredients for bold flavors, but their food generally isn t spicy compared to other cultures.
Puerto Ricans typically eat a light breakfast, but their lunch and dinner is heavy. For them,
dinner is the most important meal of the day. Puerto Ricans typically drink coffee and eat
mallorca which is a type of sweet bread. They normally start off dinner with an appetizer like
soup or stew first. Some of the main Puerto Rican dishes include: carne frita con cebolla which

Women In Poverty In The United States
In the United States today, women are far more likely than men to have lived below the poverty
line at some point in their lives. One in seven women are living in poverty today, with the
number hovering right around 14.7% compared to 10.9% of men (NWLC, 2015). It is
undeniable that that is a serious wage gap in the United States with women making cents to
every dollar that a man makes for the same work, and on top of that women are often working
lower paying pink collar jobs in the first place; for women of color, wages are even lower.
Compound these problems with factors such as domestic violence, children, and lack of healthcare

the residents children. This would allow for women to work outside of the home or go to school
without the added stress of worrying where there children are, who is taking care of them, and how
much that care is costing them. Childcare would also be beneficial to the children by giving them
structure and stability throughout their daily lives, something many of these children would be
lacking. Apart from childcare, the centers would also offer resources and programs such as GED
courses, job training, personal finance courses (for managing money, checkbooks, etc.), and even
low cost health care. GED courses are important for many women and could be instrumental in
allowing that woman to find a better job and eventually bettering her socioeconomic standing;
with education comes mobility, and women so desperately need some upward mobility to rise out
of poverty. Job training would also help address the lack of mobility that many women have.
Through job training programs, women could gain crucial skills such as how to dress and present
themselves during their job hunt and how to create a rГ©sumГ©, all of which could be helpful in
finding a better paying, non pink collar

`` Sex Without Love `` By Tina Turner
Not to my surprise, the Iconic singer Tina Turner s 1984, number one hit song, What s Love got
to do with it, became her signature song most recognized among her fans. Questioning a
relationship s worth and meaning is an endless universal topic with many diverse opinions and
beliefs of what s morally right or wrong. Similarly, Sharon Olds 1985 poem Sex without Love
reflects a speaker s disapproval and disappointment articulated with an ironic tone. At first
glance, the speaker seems to be baffled on how an action can occur without the presence of the
other, but as one reads on its obvious the irony is evident. The use of metaphors climaxes the
beauty of Sex that includes love while associating the loveless sex with harsh realism
magnitudes. The setting of the poem coincides timelessly in any era due to its direct point of
related interest and act of nature. Sharon Olds poem Sex without Love, delivery of imagery and
tone heightens the speakers overall positive and negative outlook on the correlation of sex and
love. The relationship of Sex and Love is inspired and build upon a person s belief, and opinions
of what s morally right or wrong which in turn determine their projection. In Sharon Olds poem
Sex without Love the poem starts out ironically with a question referencing a highly questionable
association of Sex and Love, How do they do it, the ones who make love without love? (Olds).

They differed on their views on the common man, who should be able to vote, and their thoughts
on special privilege. Hamilton did not have faith that the common man could be intrusted with
the affairs of the government. The people are turbulent and changing: they seldom judge or
determine right, according to Hamilton. This meant he supported the idea of high voting
requirements which did not allow the lower classes to vote. He believed the wealthy had the
special privilege to control society and the government. Hamilton can be quoted saying, Give
therefore to the first class a distinct, permanent share in the government. Since he was such a
fierce supporter of the wealthy, the taxes he proposed hurt the lower classes the most. Jefferson
was utterly the opposite of Hamilton. He had faith in the common people and trusted they would
be able to run the government. Jefferson said Every government degenerates when trusted to the
rulers. . . alone. The people themselves are its only safe depository. Jefferson supported the idea
of low voting qualification because the common folk should have a say in government. He
considered the poor, not the wealthy, as being the key to freedom. According to him, Whenever
the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government. Special privilege
was something Jefferson was wary of. He believed people born wealthy should not be entitled to
the right to run the government they way they see fit. Hamilton and Jefferson acquired different
social views regarding special privilege, who should be able to vote, and their speculation of the

Formerly a part of Yugoslavia, Macedonia gained its independence on September 8, 1991. It
adopted its constitution on November 17, 1991. Previous to gaining independence, Macedonia went
through many hardships that shaped it into what is it today. It was conquered by the Romans,
Serbians, Bulgarians, and many more empires. After freeing itself from Ottoman rule, Macedonia
continued their fight for independence and continued it for nearly one hundred years. Even after

The Black Of The Society
Is this week s readings we discuss black public intellectuals. This is examined in different was.
Nada Elia s Cornel West s Representations of the Intellectual: But Some of Us Are Brave? discusses
black intellectuals place within society. She begins by stating that she will be disproving the
perception of Cornel West. West believes that there are (only) two organic intellectual traditions in
African American life: the Black Christian tradition of teaching and the Black musical tradition of
performance (Elia, 336). This, in West s opinion, leaves the black intellectuals left out of the black
community, even though many of them aspire to use their education to alleviate problems within
the black community. Elia s mentions her understanding of the black community in which she
believes this community doesn t exist. This unity is overly imagined. While the black community
has come together to achieve goals, it is usually during time of crisis. Black peoplehave come
together for the greater good and have merely put their differences a side during these times.
Elia goes on to give examples of this such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King (Elia, 337).
West point of view is described as apocalyptic. He truly believes that there were more black
intellectuals back then and that it was better for them back then. Elia disagrees with this and
utilizes the opinions of other scholars, such as bell hooks, to do so. One of the main points the
author brings up is how West feels isolated

My English Skills
The development of my English skill
In the previous, I had ever ignored an English subject. At that time, I just think that if I didn t go

friend. Currently, I just notice that I should develop my English skill because I must use it in daily
life but, at the beginning it quite difficult to start learning. However, on this day technology take
part in our life and can cause many benefits including it can reduce the difficulty of learning the

Odontogenic Cyst Research Paper
Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is an uncommon developmental cyst of the jaw thought to arise
from remnants of the dental lamina. Fatih ASUTAY1,Jahanshah In 1987, Padayachee and Van

suggested the name sialo odontogenic cyst due to the presence of mucous cells and pools of
mucin in the epithelial lining, and due to the fact that mucous pools are often lined by
eosinophilic cuboidal cells which resemble salivary gland ducts Nigel Roque Figueiredo1

There could be loss of cortical integrity too. Л™Ismail Akkas The histological features of GOC
strongly suggest an origin from the remains of dental lamina. The microscopic features are a cystic
cavity lined with non keratinized, stratified, squamous epithelium, localized plaque like thickenings
of the epithelium, variable numbers of mucous secreting cells in the surface layer of the epithelium,
a tendency to subepithelial fibrous tissue formation, multiple cysts and the absence of
inflammation. The superficial layer of the epithelium consists of eosinophilic cuboidal cells (which
are sometimes vacuolated) that makes the surface irregular HГ©cio Henrique. Anuthama

GPS systems in agriculture
4/13/17
GPS systems in agriculture are just crazy on how they work. It is crazy today to think that a
tractor or a piece on farm equipment can actually drive it self. GPS is a Global Positioning System
it uses satellite to tell you where you at and now will drive the tractor from point A to point B
with the touch of a button. I will explain how GPS works, how GSP has change since the first one,
and how has GPS changed farming.

In 1960 a scientist by the name of Dr. Ivan Getting left his position at Raytheon Company, and
armed with the knowledge of what was at the time the most advanced navigational technology in
the world, he began developing the Global Positioning System. Together with a team of
aerospace engineers and scientists, they started getting into the three dimension global
positioning system concept. In 1957, at the start of the Cold War and the Space Race, the
U.S.S.R. launched Sputnik, the first Soviet satellite. While observing Sputnik, U.S. scientists
found out that they could track the satellite s orbit by listening to the changes in its radio
frequency using the Doppler effect, a technique that had previously been used to describe why
the pitch of a car s horn changes as it speeds away. In 1960, the knowledge gained from tracking
Sputnik, the U.S Navy was able to launch transit, the first satellite navigational system, which
was used to help guide the Navy fleets of missile submarines. In 1967, the U.S. Navy developed
the Timation technique, a system that used a highly stable, synchronized clock in the satellite, a
technology on which GPS was dependent by 1974, the first clocks were put into orbit. By 1978,
the U.S. military launched the first four GPS satellites. Until 1983, GPS technology was
available for U.S. military use only, until a tragedy occurred that the benefits of GPS technology
could no longer be restricted from civilian use. In 1983, a civilian Korean Air airplane with 269
passengers, was shot down after entering Soviet airspace killing all passengers. In response to
this tragedy, President Ronald Reagan said that when GPS technology was operational, it will be
free and available to the world . On Feb. 14, 1989, the first satellite was launched. On July 17,
1995, the GPS was complete. This system consists of 24

Nast displays how the ape like, Irish drunkard, with his cigars and alcohol bottles is allowed to
vote, yet the black man who fought for the Union in an effort to unify the nation is unable to
vote. Another aspect of irony displayed in this cartoon has to do with the background, in which a
Freedman s school is burning and a black man has been lynched. These two actions, taken out by
supporters of the Democratic party are violations of the black people s rights to education, as well
as safety to live in America. The irony is that the Democrats describe the Reconstruction Acts as
unconstitutional [and] revolutionary while the actions being carried out by Democrats are just
that, and Nast s cartoon serves to point that out. The final irony, a sad one is created by the
inclusion of an American flag below the black Union soldier. This flag shows that the actions being
taken by the Democrats are not only hurting the black people and preventing them from advancing
as a society, but are preventing America from advancing as a nation. It shows the result of the
Democrats actions and provides warning to the Republicans that they need to get out and vote or

Oxygen During Exercises
When i exercised my heart beat faster, this is in order to speed up the transport of blood in the
cardiovascular system. This is because as the muscles begin to work harder during the exercise
they will need more oxygen, and glucose and nutrients in order to give the muscles energy as they
work harder. This also means that they produce more carbon dioxide as they use up the oxygenso the
heartmust also pump the bloodto the lungs faster in order to get the carbon dioxide out of the body
and to exchange it for more oxygen.
You could test this by testing how much oxygen and carbon dioxide someone breaths when they
rest and when they exercise in order to compare the two. My temperature during exercise also

The appeal of the Internet to these bodies was obvious, as it allowed disparate institutions to connect
to each others computing systems and databases, as well as share data via E mail. The nature of the
Internet changed abruptly in 1992, when the U.S. government began pulling out of network
management, and commercial entities offered Internet access to the general public for the first
time. This change in focus marked the beginning of the Internet s astonishing expansion. In addition
to text documents, the Internet makes available graphics files (digitized photographs and artwork),
and even files that contain digitized sound and video. Through the Internet, you can download
software, participate in interactive forums where users post and respond to public messages, and
even join chats, in which you and other users type (and, in some cases, speak) messages that are
received by the chat participants instantly. Obviously, the Internet can bring you a whole host of
capabilities. But how can they be put to practical use? Among the ways that users take advantage of
the Internet are: Sharing research and business data among colleagues and like minded individuals.
Communicating with others and transmitting files via E mail. Requesting and providing assistance
with problems and questions. Marketing and publicizing products and services. Gathering valuable

Genome Wide Association Studies Essay
Genome wide association study has been very useful in the recent years. It has helped researchers to
detect genes that are not detected that easily. With the detection, it helps the researchers to prevent
and treat the particular disease. Breast cancer has been one of the most common cancer in the world
and the most common in women. Even though, breast cancer is detected easily with mammograms
or self examination there are times where it can be hard to detect. Genomewide association studies
help to identify the genes that are in risk for breast cancer. Every population has different lifestyle,

Freedom In A Caged Bird
In Maya Angelou s famous poem Caged Bird, she writes The caged bird sings of freedom.
Although Angelou was born many years after Jane Eyre became popular in the Victorian Age,
Bronte s message of finding one s independence when they are trapped in a situation or relationship
has continued throughout time. In Charlotte BrontС‘ s Jane Eyre, bird imagery is used to represent
the lack of freedom that poor and low class Victorian woman like Jane had in their life but Bronte
wanted to show through Jane that with bravery, strength and money; women are able to fight
becoming a caged bird and can make a fulfilling and financially stable life on their own.

Rochester believes throughout the whole novel that he is an expert at reading people which he
tries to prove by disguising himself as a gypsy fortune teller for Jane and his friends. Before this
strange act when Rochester and Jane have their first discussion, he tries to read Jane by saying
at intervals the glance of a curious sort of bird through the close set bars of a cage: a vivid,
restless, resolute captive is there; were it but free, it would soar cloud high. (263) Rochester
describes Jane as a caged bird wishing to be free because Jane is stuck teaching at Thornfield
which is located far away from the nearest town which magnifies Jane s feeling of isolation.
Rochester sees that she could be powerful which is why throughout Jane s time at Thornfield he
is constantly trying to prove his dominance. As much as Rochester tries to win over Jane, she
resists him exclaiming I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an
independent will, which I now exert to leave you. (483) The discovery of Bertha helps Jane to
realize she could become a trapped and crazy woman if she stayed with Rochester. This revelation
helps Jane to break out of the cage that is Thornfield and soar cloud high just like Rochester
predicted. Fuller discusses both sides of Thornfield that Jane finds a great deal of liberty in the
grounds of Thornfield, but for Rochester they represent as much of a prison as Jane s garden at
Lowood. The irony of how one place can feel like home to one person but a prison to another is
demonstrated through Thornfield. Rochester has a part of his past that he is ashamed so he hides
it away in Thornfield while Jane begins to feel some freedom because she is finding a type of

Discuss the View That the Impact of Earthquake Hazards...
Discuss the view that the impact of earthquake hazards depends primarily on human factors (40) .
I agree to some extent about the statement above and that human factors can affect the impact of an
earthquake hazard. A hazard is an object or process that has the potential to cause harm. Ground
shaking, ground displacement and flooding are some of the hazards that are produced during an
earthquake. In relation to the question above the type and severity of the impact can be affected by
physical factors (such as the magnitude and frequency of the quake) as well as human factors
(population density and education). I will be discussing the question using the following case
studies, Sichuan, Indonesia and L Aquila.

China did not create an adequate seismic design code until after the 1976 quake and even then it

Making this the second mostly costly earthquake from 1900 2013. The impacts of this earthquake

From the case study above we can see that human influences were the main cause in the severity

Traditional Families In The 1800s
Families in History
There are many ways that the idea of the traditional family has changed over the past several
centuries. For instance prior to the 19th century family was often considered anyone who lived
within a household whether related by blood or not. This included employees and extended family.
The biological family was less sacrosanct, and less sentimentalized, than it would become in the
nineteenth century. (Coontz 35) In society at the time it was socially unacceptable to be separate
and not included as part of a family household. Over time the term family came to encompass the
immediate family, a husband, wife and their children. During the late 1800 s through the mid 1900
s there were emerging ideas of family that were not widely accepted as traditional or normal, these
included single parent homes with only a Mom or Dad, Stepfamilies and ... Show more content on

Childhood was not considered a special time for development but rather a hurdle on the way to
adulthood. The goal was to get children speaking, reading, reasoning, and contributing to their

working outside of the home at the time. A cultural revolution began in the eighteenth century
when many middle class parents began to relish in their children s innocence and saw this a time to
nurture mold their children. As this form of parenting became the norm many parents began to
have less children by using birth control, thus giving the fewer children they had more of their

Rowling is showing us that there will be a racial issue everywhere no matter who you are as a

Draco calls Hermione a filthy little mud blood (Rowling 112). Sadly the story does point out the

One of these wizards was the great Salazar Slytherin, who was said to have been very prejudice
against any non pureblood students who entered Hogwarts. When he left the school left an
apparent chamber of secrets which was supposed to have a very deadly beast and that when his
heir returns it will seek revenge on the enemies of Slytherin. This cause some very large racial
suggestions since the heir is Lord Voldemort and Slytherin hoped that one day the heir of
Slytherin would come and fulfill his wishes, murdering all the impure wizards at the school
(vick_hpfan) but in the story we learn that the heir of Slytherin is in fact a half blood causing
conflict within his own lineage. The racism is even farther showed when the beast of the

only muggle born wizarding students and as discovered by Harry killed a muggle born student

Women In The Progressive Era
The Gilded age was a time of economic growth as the United States rapidly jumped to the lead in
industrialization, ahead of Britain. The nation was expanding/increasing its economy into new
areas, specifically heavy industry factories, such as railroads and coal mining. The Progressive Era
was a period of widespread social activism and political reform all throughout the United States. The
main goals of the Progressive Movement were eliminating issues caused by industrialization,
immigration, urbanization, and corruption in government. Many individuals who supported the
Progressive Movement ideals of prohibiting alcoholic beverages, ultimately targeting the political
power of high end bosses. At the same time, women s suffrage was a theme that was highly
influential during the Progressive Erabecause they were defending their rights to vote. The main
problem was the women were not equally seen as smart, influential individuals who should play a
part in making decisions for the country. Two of the women who primarily helped/contributed to the
passing of the 19th amendment/birth controlwere Alice Paul and Margaret Sanger. Although these
two women were fighting for the same objectives (women s rights), they had different methods of

Voltaire was the French author of the novella Candide, also known as Optimism (Durant and

techniques of exaggeration to contrast highlight the evil and brutality of war and the world in

Because they are ludic and not grounded in physical realities one can come up with multiple correct
interpretations that are sound but mutually exclusive.
To construe what something could mean, Levinson proposes that we, as interpreters, be pragmatic
and use logic in combination with our given knowledge of the contexts of works to determine their
interpretations. Although there exists an impulse to either exclusively use does mean or could
mean modes of inquiry, like an x ray for the former and a metaphor for the latter, the two modes
actually have mutual implications. To examine an x ray for what it means is to postulate what it
could mean and then come to an apt conclusion. To examine a metaphor is to find what is a
plausible response in a determinative context of semantic possibilities. There also exist instances of
purely could mean inquiries, says Levinson, like the infinite volumes of Babel, but without a does
mean interpretation available, as there are no intentions behind the works, the infinite possible
could mean interpretations create an absence of meaning. It is here I would like to extend the
definition of does mean interpretation beyond scientific knowledge based answers, to include
hypothetical DM interpretations. Although we will see how authorial

Leah s Exile In The Poisonwood Bible
While in The Poisonwood Bible there are many instances of exile the Witch Doctor s exile after
his murder of Ruth May, Anatole s exile from typical African society because of his relationship
with Leah, the Price s exile from the safety of America and their inability to return to normal, for
instance, perhaps one of the most significant exiles takes place between Leah and her father,
Nathan. Throughout the beginning of the novel, Leah is wholly under her father and is obedient,
but as the novel progresses she gradually becomes more rebellious. When a vote is held regarding
her and she defies her father, he washes his hands of her and declares that he is no longer
responsible for her. She then becomes further rebellious and throws off his... Show more content on

Without the Belgians, the Congo became financially unstable and lost whatever instruction and
guidance the Belgians thought to give whether it be any degree of education, which was then
thrust onto the Africans to teach themselves, or political stability. While the political stability was
not in the Congo s favor, it was still more beneficial than the leader the Congo had after Lumumba.
The loss of stability led to the Congo being considered lesser than other countries and led to other
countries, the United States of America, for example, shunning the Congolese. The financial
instability also led to the Congo being unable to communicate effectively with other countries the
sister countries of Africa or the countries abroad because the people of the Congo (or Zaire, as it
was called under Mobutu, the outsider that took the place of Lumumba) could not afford to use
what little finances they had for anything apart from basic survival necessities. This was alienating
in nature, but exile also proved to be enriching as well. The exile brought about the election of
Lumumba which in turn proved to produce ideas that would benefit the Congo. Lumumba s
election also resulted in higher morale. When he was killed, the Congolese were still loyal and
remembered what could have been under Lumumba. The Congolese passion and loyalty for

American vs. Italian culture: worlds apart
By definition, culture is a combination of collectively shared traits, values and traditions that
distinguish one human group from another (Hofstede, 1991). Thus culture is in essence that heart
and spirit that makes each country and its people unique and different. And in that sense, America
and Italy are literally at the opposite sides of nearly every aspect of culture. Being an Italian
American, I have grown in a family where these two opposites meet and blend together. Albeit the
differences of these two cultures are nearly innumerable, the most commonly recognized and
distinct ones lay in the areas of family relations, eating habits and ... Show more content on

Hall (1983, pp.42 54): monochronic (US) vs. polychronic (Italy). That means that in the States
the whole life is fitted into a rigid schedule and time itself is a precious commodity. Conversely,
as a polychronic nation, Italians are more concerned with the people and the present moment
than the schedules (Hall, p. 42) and perceive time as something flexible like a flowing river. As a
result, Italians enjoy a much slower pace of life than Americans. For example, nearly every food
beverage business in the US has to go options, whereas in Italy it is not common since people tend
to enjoy their meals slowly, without haste. Consequently, the Italians tend to be more relaxed and
laid back about nearly everything: what is not done now, will be done later. Eventually. Sooner, or
later no stress there.
This list of differences between American and Italian cultures could go on and on, even though the
globalization through the new technologies has driven countries and cultures closer together than
ever before. But still, US and Italy present nearly opposite perspectives on the core values and
behavior patterns in life: Italy being more conservative and tradition oriented in family relations,
eating habits and general pace of life, while US valuing independence and efficiency above

Crime Scene 2
Analysis of crime scene. A deceased female was found in her home on Monday, June 2nd. The
victim was found bound to the bed and stabbed 13 times and semen was found. I will provide
theories and explanations of each to help suggest why the perpetrator committed this crime.
The Offender
The husband is the potential suspect. He had the perfect alibi, he was out of town and no one would
suspect him of committing the crime. He knew his wife would be home from work that day. He
knew her routine and carefully planned when he would commit the murder. Nothing was stolen
from the home, as it contained a wealth of expensive items. The fact that nothing was disturbed,
points to the husband. He knew the layout of the home, because he ... Show more content on

A person s criminal activity can begin later in life and driving forces are swayed by various life
circumstances.
This theory includes different classes and types of criminals. It is a combination of latent trait
theory and life course theory which helps explain that there are different paths and classes of
offenders. The external force, in this case, a mistress, would be the trajectory. Working in
combination with his bad temper, arousal theory influenced the criminal behavior. This theory
might not fully support his motives if he didn t have a mistress or seeking financial gain. If no
outside forces compelled him to murder his wife then this theory won t apply.
Arousal Theory
This theory combines genetic and environmental reasons as to the reasons how a brain processes
environmental stimulation differently, the response varies for each person. His inability to
control anger combined with his desire to be with another woman, and a possible sizeable
financial gain, influenced intentions. He had deep seated resentment towards his wife and the
tension was building over a period of time. He was obviously unhappy yet kept it hidden. He
possibly had frequent anger episodes. I believe that when he initially tried to stab her and failed to
kill her, he exploded and reacted in a very violent way. There is the possibility that he remained

Relationship Between Agamemnon And Beowulf
The Epic Journey of a Relationship
Many things can contribute to the greatness of a hero. A person can be determined as a hero by the
brave things they have done or how their actions have impacted others. In The Iliad by Homer,
translated by Richmond Lattimore, the Greek king Agamemnon loses his best warrior, Achilles, who
decides not to fight in the Trojan War. Agamemnon knows that the Greeks will be unable to win the
war without Achilles, whose strength cannot be matched by anyone else. In Beowulf by an
anonymous poet, translated by Burton Raffel, Beowulf is Hrothgar s best chance to defeat Grendel
and avenge the Danes who had previously tried and failed. Achilles and Beowulf can be viewed as
the servants of their kings, since they serve and protect their crown. The two kings reliance on their
servitude emphasize the importance of Achilles and Beowulf, making the relationships between
Achilles and Agamemnon, and Beowulf and Hrothgar similar to each other. The relationships
between Achilles and Agamemnon, and Beowulf and Hrothgar show that kings play an important
role in contributing to the greatness of their servants. The kings rely on their servants heroic
abilities. At the beginning of the story, Achilles is unhappy with Agamemnon because the king took
away his prize for himself. During an argument with Agamemnon, Achilles says, Always the greater
part of the painful fighting is the work of / my hands; but when the time comes to distribute the

My Week As A Business Analyst
My Week As A Business Analyst
My week as a Business Analyst was a very eye opening and educational experience. The reason I
chose to job shadow a Business Analyst is because I wanted to learn more about a career in

what to expect because I had never been exposed to this kind of environment. However, I was
eager to learn about the functions of an IT Business Analyst. In addition, I was really looking

A meeting needed to be scheduled with the customer who was located in Ireland. In addition, there
is a change control process that is used when creating and completing any new development. This
change control process is based on requests from the business. Then, procedures must be followed
to implement these requests.
Most requests follow a general guideline and a series of steps. The first step of the change control
process is to identify what must be changed and document those changes. The second step is to
validate the change with management approval. The third step is to analyze how long it will take,
how much it will cost, and how the change will impact the current software design. The fourth step
is control which is the deciding factor on whether you want to proceed with the change. The fifth
step is action which includes documenting and implementing the changes. The sixth and final step
is to verify that all documentation is complete and close the request.
During my week of job shadowing, I saw all of these steps being completed and learned about the
process. The company used a software tool for the change control process called Remedy. This is a
software that is in compliance with guidelines set by the FDA. (Federal Government) The changes
themselves were implemented in the SAP software.
There is a lot involved in documenting the action step in the change control process. There are

A Speech For The Liberty Of Unlicensed Printing By John...
Areopagitica: A Speech for the Liberty of Unlicensed Printing was written by John Milton in
which he argued against censorship and defended free speech and freedom of the press. John
Milton was an English poet, polemicist, man of letters, and civil servant for the Commonwealth
of England under Oliver Cromwell. He was born in Bread Street, London on 9 December 1608.
He was known best for his epic poem Paradise Lost. Milton s verse and writing reflect deep
individual feelings, a passion for freedom and self assurance, and the important and contemporary
issues and political turbulence of his day. Writing in English, Latin, Greek, and Italian, he was able
to gained global name and fame within his lifetime. But he also earned international... Show more

Areopagitica is full of divine and classical references which Milton uses to strengthen his argument.
This is particularly fitting because it was being addressed to the Calvinist Presbyterians who
comprised Parliament at that time. The Areopagitica was an attack directed against the Licensing
Order Act of 1643, which demanded that an author s work be approved by the government in order
for it to be published. Milton sets off his writing with historical evidence noting that Ancient Greece
and Rome did not follow to the practice of licensing. In some cases, blasphemous or irreligious
writings were burnt and their authors punished, but it was after production that these texts were
rejected rather than prior to it. Milton s point is that, if a text is to be rejected, it should first be
examined, refuted, and condemned rather than restricted before its ideas have even been expressed.
Milton indicates that licensing was first instituted by the Catholics with the Inquisition. This fact
appealed to Parliament s religious beliefs since it was dominated by Protestants, and there were
conflicts between the Protestants and Catholics in England. Milton provides historical examples of
the aftermath following the Inquisition, including how there were popes in Rome beginning in the
14th century who became

Descriptive Essay On Snowboarding
Professional snowboarder
Imagine being at the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd.
Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than
the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will
decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a
dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Being on top of the enormous slope and
strapping into my bindings instantly made me relaxed and put a grin larger than the slope itself
on my face. Everytime I glide down the face of the mountain I become focused and dialed in on
my riding. When becoming a professional snowboarder as an occupation, I would compete in
large competitions such as the X Games or the Olympics to win prizes and gain popularity. The
excitement from competing in such a competition and the view the crowd would be something I
would have dreamed of in my early stages of snowboarding. The experience would give me an
overwhelming amount of adrenaline and make it feel as though my childhood dreams had sprung
legs and walked through time towards my present day self. Professional snowboarding
competitions would be give me the joy and passion as a dream job all while traveling and being
with my friends.
I am now a professional snowboarder with my friends at Mammoth Mountain, the local resort,
anxiously preparing for the X Games slopestyle competition that is a few days away. The
slopestyle competition that I am competing in is a snowboarding course that consists of rails and
jumps that are scored from 1 to 10 points. Being the perfectionist that I strive to be, I have set a
goal of scoring a 10 on all of the features that I will tentatively encounter throughout the course. To
further prepare myself, my friends consecutively ride with me through all of the features in the
terrain park, which includes rails and jumps, to help me reach my goal at the upcoming slopestyle
competition. While riding through the park as effortlessly as a snowflake fluttering through the
air, I was overjoyed to be able to ride with friends. When joyously riding with my friends the good
times and new

Father Time, By Elie Wiesel
Time, from one person s experience to another, from day to day, from emotion to emotion, varies
more than the individuals who experience it. Yet time still can be measured. People, almost from
the earth s inception, have had a desire to regulate time. This is still seen today, with all the
watches, phone clocks, wall clocks, analog clocks, digital clocks, grandfather clocks, atomic clocks,
timers, and stopwatches. Unfortunately, while it is possible to measure the actual emissions from
an atom s atomic transition, it is impossible to measure timeperception in different circumstances.
Both the poem Time Is , and the statue Father Time , portray the integral role of time in humanity.
Upon observing the sculpture further, it is noticeable,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

time. Father Time is a constant reminder to those who Wait, ... Fear, ... Grieve, ... Rejoice; [and] ...

Hard to find , Everything That Rises Must Converge . You can never forget the time you re living

creativity in fashion to the time you re living in is the most important thing. Donatella Versace
In each of Flannery O Connor s stories there is a very different perspectives in the stories also in
the different time periods. Each of these women bring a very different look on life. This is not
always a good thing. We see that some of these women only want to dwell in the past, to never
move forward, always hoping to move backwards instead. They are still living in the past
because the present and the future seem scary. O Connor introduces Mrs. Hopewell, the
Grandmother, and Julian s Mother who are main characters in her stories. Each of these women
believe in something that does not exist anymore. O Connor does not allow us the privilege of
knowing their first name or even much about these ladies. Each of these women show people their
southern take on the world which conveys an extremely patronizing attitude on life. Their world is
changing and if they wanted to they could have grabbed ahold of it. They have a chance to
explore these new changes although they seem unwilling. The O Connor s stories we see Mrs.

The Beginnings of a National Literary Tradition Essay
The Beginnings of a National Literary Tradition
Canadians throughout their history have been concerned over the status of their national literature.
One of the major problems facing early Canadian writers was that the language and poetic
conventions that they had inherited from the Old World were inadequate for the new scenery and
conditions in which they now found themselves. Writers such as Susanna Moodie, Samuel Hearne,
and
Oliver Goldsmith were what I would consider Immigrant authors. Even though they were writing in
Canada about Canada their style and their audiences were primarily England and Europe. These
authors wrote from an Old World perspective and therefore were not truly Canadian authors. It took

Lampman signaled the move from the Immigrant authors like Moodie and her counterparts toward
a true and distinct Canadian literary movement. It is important to note that in order to appreciate
the quality of 19th Century Canadian literature, an effort of sympathy and a leap of imagination are
both needed because it is here in the 19th Century that our nations true poetic history begins. In
early Canadian poetry the most influential and universal poet is undoubtedly Archibald Lampman.
While his career, like his life, were short lived his poetry remains as a reminder to the origins of
Canadian literary thought. Lampman was one of our first major literary figures to try and identify a
national literature. He realized the importance of having a specifically Canadian literary tradition.
An important stepping point in
Lampman s career came after he read the work Orion by Charles G.D. Roberts.
Lampman describes his over powering emotion when as a youth he came across this published
work(in the quote on the title page). The importance of having this distinct literary school was a
driving inspiration in his art. Lampman is regarded as the most talented of The Confederation Poets
( W.J. Keith 18). It is amazing that this unspectacular man could have such a profound effect on the
evolution of Canadian literary tradition. His upbringing was in a very conservative environment as

The Cultural Context Of The Epistle Of James
Introduction The epistle of James considered the greatest practical Christian living in the New
Testament comparable to Proverbs in the Old Testament. Throughout the epistle, there are over
twenty references to the Sermon on the Mount, making the epistle a small commentary on the
sermon given by Jesus.
The Author One of the most discussed subjects about the epistle of James is who wrote it. The
author identifies himself James as a servant of God, without giving any other clues to who he is.
Three possible people could be the author of this epistle: the first and least likely is James the son
of Alphaeus, the second is James the son of Zebedee and brother of John, and the last is James the
brother of Jesus. No evidence in history to suggest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, just what does this mean, James explained in verse 18 that they are new creatures or
the firstfruits of his creatures through the word. Firstfruits, being the best of a crop that the
master would get for himself before giving away or selling any. These would have been the best,
most perfect of the crops. This is also something the Jewish people would understand being
mostly farmers. Now that we know that they are to understand the word so we can be those
firstfruits, what do they need to do to understand? James instructed be quick to listen, slow to
speak, slow to anger It is interesting that James placed, quick to listen first, why did he do this, to
ensure the reader understands the importance of listening to the whole word not just hearing what
they wanted to hear. James is encouraging the reader to listen to scripture whenever they get the
chance for it is a sign of being a true Christian. Slow to speak, first, they needed to listen, but they
could not listen if they were speaking. The need to hold their tongue until the end was essential to
prevent them from looking like a fool (Proverbs 17:28). Slow to anger, why is this last on the list?

Schiller and his idea to take in the homeless, one of the main reasons why I agree with him is
because he was very concerned about other people s safety. For example he was aware it was cold
outside with a wind chill of below 15 degrees so he provides a warm place for people to sleep and
fights for justice that people need to be safe. He not only provided safety but he also went out of

  • 5. I Am Offering This Poem Jimmy Santiago Baca, writer of I am offering this poem , was born in New Mexico in the year 1952.When Baca was only a child, he was abandoned by his parents. He lived with his grandmother for a few years after that and was later placed in an orphanage. However, he ended up living in the streets and was arrested for drug possession when he was twenty one years old. He then spent six and a half years in prison. This is where he taught himself to read and write. He composed many poems during his time in jail. His style of writing is also heavily influenced by his life experiences. Baca s poem I am offering this poem has four stanzas and seven lines in each stanza. Each stanza ends in the same verse I loveyou . The entire poem exudes the feelingof yearning and infatuation. The second stanza also suggests that he wants to feel needed by his loved one. He wanted to become a necessity to his beloved even though he wasn t there. This is why he uses a metaphor to relate his poem to a pot full of yellow corn . When he says I love you again in the second stanza. It sounds more urgent then it did in the first stanza. In the third stanza, Baca urges his beloved to keep the poem and tuck it away . This leads to the assumption that he wants his loved one to feel his love for a long amount of time. He wants this girl to treasure this poem and his love. • 7. The Authoritative Parenting And The Style Of The Parenting... The parenting style that my parents use is definitely authoritative. My parents have shown authority towards me and my siblings but have always been flexible with their rules. My parents have never stressed us out by being too strict with their rules. The first question I asked my parents was, how would you react if one of my siblings or I asked to come home later than you originally told us to come home? My parents responded that they would ask why we want to come home later and then tell them they can come home later at a certain time but no later than the extended time. This fits exactly with the authoritative parenting style because my parents would extend the time which is being flexible and then also they would enforce a new time for us to come home which shows authority. Next I asked my parents, what would you do if one of my siblings or I got in trouble at school? My parents said they would have a talk with whoever got in trouble and make sure they know not to ever do it again. Also, my parents said they would discipline whoever got in trouble by doing more chores or taking away their phone for a day. This fits with the authoritative parenting style as well because my parents are making us understand what we did wrong and learn from it. They would also give a consequence because of it but nothing that is too harsh because they trust us to learn from what we did. After that, I asked my parents, what would your reaction be if I did not do my chores at the house? ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Stopping in front of her apartment, I was annoyed to see ketchup smeared under the brass numeral two. Margery was such a slob when she d been drinking. She d pick up fast food, but be so bombed that half the time she couldn t find her mouth. All I got for my efforts were a few moans and incoherent mumbles and a piercing pain in my right hand. Clambering to my feet, I pulled a bloody sliver from my palm. It left a nasty looking hole ripe for infection, so I crossed the few short steps to the sink to wash it out. The ubiquitous orange speckled shag rug did not extend into this area. Instead, the floor was covered in a linoleum of fake bricks, one of the few improvements that actually pleased my eye. My gaze drifted to the frying pan still smoking on the stove, and I felt a flash of anger again. Margery could ve burned the place down with her reckless behavior. Payback time, I thought, as I turned on the tap and let the cold water sting my wound. In BunyanВґs book, one of the places Christian passes through on his pilgrimage to the Celestial City is Vanity Fair, where it is possible to buy all sorts of vanities. A very sad thing happens there: the allegorical person Faithful is killed by the people. In the novel VanityFair Thackeray writes about the title he has chosen: But my kind reader will please to remember that this history has Vanity Fair for a title, and that Vanity Fair is a very vain, wicked, foolish place, full of all sorts of humbugs and falsenesses and pretensions (98). As soon as she is out of school she starts scheming to find a husband above her station, since her ambition is to advance in society. Having failed to win the hand of Joseph Sedley, she marries Rawdon Crawley, thinking he will inherit a lot of money from his aunt. Instead they both fall out of favour, and Becky has to use her wits. Throughout the novel she is the one who charms people, and who is held in high esteem by the upper class in which she yearns to belong . The word vanity suits Becky well; she seems to care for no one, not even her friends, and she neglects her own son. A very hard judgement is passed on her by Lady Jane: She has deceived her husband, as she has deceived everybody; her soul is black with vanity, worldliness, and all sorts of crime (752). When Rawdon leaves her it becomes harder for her to retain her reputation. When she notices that people avoid her she works hard to be regarded as respectable. She is not used to a life where she is not surrounded by admirers, and she is bored. She makes Joseph Sedley listen to her lamentations on how she has been trampled on. He believes her and is made very unhappy. Becky is suspected of being responsible for his death. • 10. The War Of The Worlds By H. G. Wells The 19th century was a transformative one in human history, resulting in changes of globalization through colonialism, numerous scientific achievements which led to industrialization, and an emergence of new philosophical thoughts which placed emphasis on human nature. The War of the Worlds, by H. G. Wells, was a reflection of its time, and it shows the idea of imperialism at the time by exploring how the differences between Martians and humans causes a moral disconnect which was an allegory to express the British lack of empathy toward their colonies, how radical ideologies took advantage of that disconnect for their own profit, and why imperialism is morally hypocritical. Martins were able to fight humans so successfully because of their advanced technology. The Martian cavalry units were composed of many monstrous tripod[s], higher than many houses, striding over the young pine trees, and smashing them aside in its career. Furthermore, one of the ways the author believes the Martians can kill effectively is through the use of heat rays, which causes whatever is combustible flashes into flame at its touch, lead runs like water, it softens iron, cracks and melts glass [sic]. However, while Martians had complex technologies, they were physically simple; They were heads merely heads. Entrails they had none. Martians were also fair weak, being bipeds with flimsy, silicious skeletons (almost like those of the silicious sponges) and feeble musculature. The idea ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. How Jesus Was Conceived By The Holy Spirit, And Born Of A... In chapter four, Stein discusses how Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of a virgin. In the beginning of the chapter he shows where this idea comes from in the bible (p.63 64). After showing his readers where the idea that Jesus was born of a virgin, he goes on to say who does and does not believe this. The critical views of this contradict what is believed by Christians (p. 64 65). He discusses why Pagans and Jews do not believe that Jesuswas born of a virgin Mary (p. 65). He then goes on to tell the story of the birth of Jesus (p. 73). How Joseph took Mary to Bethlehem, while there she gave birth to Jesus in a stable, and how wise men came to see Jesus (p. 73 78). He concludes the chapter by defending the Christian belief of Jesus being born of a virgin (p. 78). All of the information provided in chapter four is important because the birth of Jesus, of course, plays a huge role in the entire book because it is discussing the life of Jesus. Although the birth of Jesus might be controversial, no matter how Jesus was conceived he still lived and breathed and walked the earth. Chapter four plays a huge role in the book as an entirety because it is the beginning of the life of Christ. In chapter five, Stein discusses the years in Jesus life that Christians do not know much about. He begins by discussing the normalcy of Jesus young life (p. 81). Weihrich and Koontz (2005) argue that leadership is the art of influencing others to readily and actively endeavour towards meeting goals set by the team. Nada Elia s Cornel West s Representations of the Intellectual: But Some of Us Are Brave? discusses black intellectuals place within society. She begins by stating that she will be disproving the perception of Cornel West. West believes that there are (only) two organic intellectual traditions in African American life: the Black Christian tradition of teaching and the Black musical tradition of performance (Elia, 336). This, in West s opinion, leaves the black intellectuals left out of the black community, even though many of them aspire to use their education to alleviate problems within the black community. Elia s mentions her understanding of the black community in which she believes this community doesn t exist. This unity is overly imagined. While the black community has come together to achieve goals, it is usually during time of crisis. Black peoplehave come together for the greater good and have merely put their differences a side during these times. Elia goes on to give examples of this such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King (Elia, 337). West point of view is described as apocalyptic. He truly believes that there were more black intellectuals back then and that it was better for them back then. Elia disagrees with this and utilizes the opinions of other scholars, such as bell hooks, to do so. One of the main points the author brings up is how West feels isolated ... This can be seen in the great Sumatra Andaman earthquake which took place on the 26th of December 2004 and registered a 9.1 magnitude, one of the third biggest recorded quakes. The subduction of the Indo Australian plate under the Burma plate triggered the tsunami responsible for the greatest loss of life in a tectonic event. A 15 20m slip occurred along 1600km of fault line in two phases over a period of around 3 4 minutes, the longest rupture ever recorded in an earthquake. • 36. Traditional Families In The 1800s Families in History There are many ways that the idea of the traditional family has changed over the past several centuries. For instance prior to the 19th century family was often considered anyone who lived within a household whether related by blood or not. This included employees and extended family. The biological family was less sacrosanct, and less sentimentalized, than it would become in the nineteenth century. (Coontz 35) In society at the time it was socially unacceptable to be separate and not included as part of a family household. Over time the term family came to encompass the immediate family, a husband, wife and their children. During the late 1800 s through the mid 1900 s there were emerging ideas of family that were not widely accepted as traditional or normal, these included single parent homes with only a Mom or Dad, Stepfamilies and ... What Is The Theme Of Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Kelly FunezENGL 2322 50281 Jon Anderson 17 November 2015 Analysis of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets The story of Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets by J.K. Rowling, Rowling is showing us that there will be a racial issue everywhere no matter who you are as a person. The story suggests that within the Hogwarts there is a race issue, for example when Draco calls Hermione a filthy little mud blood (Rowling 112). Sadly the story does point out the race issue with the beast of Salazar Slytherin and that all of Slytherin house is extremely racist towards other wizards. When he left the school left an apparent chamber of secrets which was supposed to have a very deadly beast and that when his heir returns it will seek revenge on the enemies of Slytherin. This cause some very large racial suggestions since the heir is Lord Voldemort and Slytherin hoped that one day the heir of Slytherin would come and fulfill his wishes, murdering all the impure wizards at the school (vick_hpfan) but in the story we learn that the heir of Slytherin is in fact a half blood causing conflict within his own lineage. The racism is even farther showed when the beast of the chamber, the basilisk is set out by Tom Riddle who at the time is controlling Ginny is attacking only muggle born wizarding students and as discovered by Harry killed a muggle born student the first time that the Chamber of Secrets was opened 50 years earlier by the real Tom Riddle when he was a student at Hogwarts. He uses satire, and techniques of exaggeration to contrast highlight the evil and brutality of war and the world in general when men are meekly accepting of their fate. Questions On The Nature Of Interpretation Hypothetical Misinterpretation Jerrold Levinson, a prominent hypothetical intentionalist, through his explanation of the relationship between artworks and exploratory interpretations, has gone under criticism for allowing misinterpretations to be deemed as valid could mean options. However, one finds when reading Two Notions of Interpretationand Intention and Interpretation in Literature that these criticisms are effectively countered by two arguments that Levinson presents. Because they are ludic and not grounded in physical realities one can come up with multiple correct interpretations that are sound but mutually exclusive. To construe what something could mean, Levinson proposes that we, as interpreters, be pragmatic and use logic in combination with our given knowledge of the contexts of works to determine their interpretations. Although there exists an impulse to either exclusively use does mean or could mean modes of inquiry, like an x ray for the former and a metaphor for the latter, the two modes actually have mutual implications. To examine an x ray for what it means is to postulate what it could mean and then come to an apt conclusion. To examine a metaphor is to find what is a plausible response in a determinative context of semantic possibilities. There also exist instances of purely could mean inquiries, says Levinson, like the infinite volumes of Babel, but without a does mean interpretation available, as there are no intentions behind the works, the infinite possible could mean interpretations create an absence of meaning. It is here I would like to extend the definition of does mean interpretation beyond scientific knowledge based answers, to include hypothetical DM interpretations. And in that sense, America and Italy are literally at the opposite sides of nearly every aspect of culture. Conversely, as a polychronic nation, Italians are more concerned with the people and the present moment than the schedules (Hall, p. 42) and perceive time as something flexible like a flowing river. As a result, Italians enjoy a much slower pace of life than Americans. For example, nearly every food beverage business in the US has to go options, whereas in Italy it is not common since people tend to enjoy their meals slowly, without haste. Consequently, the Italians tend to be more relaxed and laid back about nearly everything: what is not done now, will be done later. Eventually. Sooner, or later no stress there. This list of differences between American and Italian cultures could go on and on, even though the globalization through the new technologies has driven countries and cultures closer together than ever before. Areopagitica is full of divine and classical references which Milton uses to strengthen his argument. This is particularly fitting because it was being addressed to the Calvinist Presbyterians who comprised Parliament at that time. The Areopagitica was an attack directed against the Licensing Order Act of 1643, which demanded that an author s work be approved by the government in order for it to be published. Milton sets off his writing with historical evidence noting that Ancient Greece and Rome did not follow to the practice of licensing. In some cases, blasphemous or irreligious writings were burnt and their authors punished, but it was after production that these texts were rejected rather than prior to it. Milton s point is that, if a text is to be rejected, it should first be examined, refuted, and condemned rather than restricted before its ideas have even been expressed. Milton indicates that licensing was first instituted by the Catholics with the Inquisition. This fact appealed to Parliament s religious beliefs since it was dominated by Protestants, and there were conflicts between the Protestants and Catholics in England.
