Standardized Testing Has Made A Huge Impact Not Only On...
Standardized testing has made a huge impact not only on our educational system, it has also had a
negative impact on certain groups of students. One of the groups of students that have been
affected by standardized testing the most are English Language Learners (ELL). ELL s are
expected to take and pass a testthat they are not able to read and understand. It is not fair to make
students take a test in a language that they are still learning and will not be able to comprehend.
Although there are modified tests for ELL s to take hardly any of them can qualify for it. They
are left taking a test they are not able to understand. Different accommodations should be made to
help the ELL s who do not qualify for the modified test, but are also not qualified to take the
regular test. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was implemented in an effort to help students
learn and meet their full potential academically. The NCLB was put into place by the government
to have more of an input in the standards that schools must meet. The Common Core initiative was
implemented to make schools in every state equal and have the same curriculum. Texas is one of
the states that has decided not to adhere to the Common Core initiative. Texas s standards are based
on Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Standardized testsare the formal assessments
schools use to make sure students are meeting the required state standards. The standardized test
that Texas uses for assessment is called the

The Dawes Act Of 1887
Indigenous peoples of the United States have been persecuted against since the birth of the nation.
As years progressed, the Indians were stripped of their identity and exposed to the realities of the
American lifestyle a lifestyle that failed to coincide with the traditions and culture they possessed
years prior to the influx of Americans into western territory. As desire for this territory increased
due to economic ventures, and the ultimate desire to expand due to Manifest Destiny, measures
needed to be taken to ensure the land was to be in full possession of the government. Thus, the
Dawes Act was enacted in 1887, which allotted new lands to Indians in exchange for American
citizenship. While its promise could be construed as a generous gesture by the government, the act
in reality was nothing but a gesture; it was a burden. Therefore, the Dawes Act of 1887, along with
other attempts of Indian assimilation, threatened family ties and culture, stripped them of sacred
lands, and proved that citizenship came with a fatal denunciation of their culture. The Dawes Act
not only impacted the current inhabitants of the indigenous lands, it also affected the future
generation of Indians; since the culture was being readjusted to be acceptable for American
standards. On the new lands granted to the Indians were private government run boarding schools
in order to successfully assimilate children of the native population into society. In Document F, the

Examples Of Conformism In Catcher In The Rye
In the 1950s, American economy was booming after the World War II. Rates of unemployment
and inflation were low, and wages were high. However, the American society had its flaws
despite all the success it was having. One of the most popular novels of the time, The Cather In
The Rye written by JD Salinger, discussed the flaws in the society Americans had failed to
realize. Throughout the novel, Salinger criticized many aspects of American Society such as
the idea of conformity and the ignorance of teenager s lives. One of Salinger s criticism on
American society was the idea of conformity where everyone was to match with one another.
During the 1950s, Americans were following these norms of behaving in the same way as one
another. For example, they lived in houses that looked identical, wore the same types of clothing
and many others. Richard Powers stated in Life of a 1950s Teenagers, What I remember most
about the 50s were rules. Rules, rules, rules... for everything. Rules about clothes which clothes
you could wear when. [...] Rules about streets. Rules about play. Rules were placed on every
American, especially children, on how to act at certain places, what to wear and others. These
norms slowly became a part of the Americans daily lives. In The Catcher In The Rye, Salinger
opposed the idea of conformity through the main character, Holden Caufield. Holden was a
teenager who rebels against conformity by not doing what is expected of him by his parents. He

Jackie Robinson And Racial Barriers In Sports
Can you ever imagine yourself living in an era where you are constancy denied due to the color
of your skin? In the 1940s early 1950s segregation was still existent and in full effect. Baseball was
amongst one of the most popular sports in America but there were separate leagues that were
involved within this, Major League Baseball(MLB) and the Negro BaseballLeagues were the only
leagues that were existent during the era of segregation. There was only one person that had the
guts to enter the Major League of Baseball, his name was Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson had the
perseverance to face this racial barrier in sports as an obstacle to overcome throughout the
duration of his career. Jackie Robinson was a major influence when it came down to breaking
the racial barrier in sports, he inspired many people to fight for the equality that African
Americans truly deserved. Robinson had many influences during his career in baseball that had
helped him break this barrier but there was one man that changed the entire sport of baseball, his
name was Branch Rickey. Rickey was an American sports executive, he was hired to The
Brooklyn Dodgers to take position as President. He then wanted Robinson to join the Dodgers but
with Jackie being the first African American to join the MLB, he would have to learn to endure
all of the hate that was came with the price of the first African American to ever be a part of the

The And Its Effect On The Nanoscale
Introduction
Nanotechnology is the study of particles on the nanoscale with, at least one dimension being less
than 100nm. (Chen, Schluesener, 2008) Nanoscale particles can come in many shapes and sizes,
ranging from 100 1 nm. These particles can be found as rods, cones, spheres and many more
complex matrices and patterns as seen in figure 1.(Champion, Katare, Mitragotri, 2007) Nanosilver
will form a roughly spherical shape as can be seen in figure 2. (Utopia Silver Supplements, 2012)
In the medical industry there is high demand for antibacterial and antiseptic products, especially in
hospitals and other medical institutes. Antibacterial products fall into two categories, residue
producing, that provide a long lasting antibacterial action like triclosan, and non residue producing
which are generally fast acting and can rapidly kill bacteria and disappear quickly leaving no
residues, like alcohols. (APUA, 2014) But these are costly, time absorbing and inefficient to
produce. (how products are made, 2016) There is also the very real threat of
superbugs.(antibacterial resistant microbes) Silver Nanoparticles could produce a quick and cheap
antimicrobial that conserves resources.
Silver is the 47th element of the periodic table and has been known since greek times to have a
healing and antibacterial effect. More recently, silver has been used in world war 1 to prevent
infections from wounds. (Chen. et al, 2008) Now, because of nanotechnology people have created

To A Utilitarian, This Would Not Apply As They Are Not
To a Utilitarian, this would not apply as they are not bound by the holy scripture, the divine
command, they would view this as, it s their own decision to decide what to do with their own body,
no government, no authority or any other person can interfere on what their right is. It is their own
absolute autonomy to make their own decision, whether they choose to die. Jeremy Bentham
associates utilitarianism with ancient hedonism, where actions are resulting in the pursuit of
happiness. It was him who established act utilitarian; where the decisions deal with each individual
case analyzing the benefits and harm to promote to overall happiness, which would yield the best
consequences. Every action and every decision would be weighted for... Show more content on

This would achieve the best health care system for the society; since we would be saving all the
patients coming through the emergency room. Also, some patients feel hopeless when the
clinicians are making their decisions for them, however, when clinicians are dealing with
competent, rational patients, patients can take part of the decision making on their own
treatment, the dilemma happens when the patient is not rational, incompetent, like a patient
without an advanced directive for healthcare and being in a persistent vegetative state, or coma
and unable to make their own decisions. An advantage to a utilitarian theory would be; if a
terminal ill person wanted to die, and family members did not object to the person wanting to
die, then the Mercy killing would be viewed as acceptable. Similarly, utilitarian s are not bound
to the holy scripture, so the command, Though shall not kill , also has no effect on what is
morally right or what is morally wrong for a utilitarian person wanting to die, so if they majority
of the family are okay with the person wanting to die by voluntary euthanasia, then it would be
viewed as acceptable. However, the disadvantage to this would be, what about the minority? Being
utilitarian, and being a minority would not be in your favor, because the majority would always
win. What if your Grandma, who is suffering from a terminal illness,

When I was a sophomore my mother was diagnosed with cancer and as a result, I have spent
most of my college career dealing emotional with the result. She is free of disease as of right
now but it was a long and tumultuous journey to get there. I practically spent 2 years without a
mother because she was so sick and I had to take her role. I organized family events, cooked
them meals when I could, did their shopping all while going to school three hours away and
having constant fear that my mother and the love of my life was going to die. That is only my
personal struggle with it, not even taking into account her trauma or my fathers or brothers. It
almost seems selfish to reflect on this because it was nothing compared to what she was going
through. I went through stages where I was horrified and so scared and then I was angry and
selfish. I wanted my mother back, I wanted her to make me dinner when I came home from
college and send me care packages again. I wanted her to go shopping every weekend like she used
to and spend money on things that weren t hospital bills. I wanted to call her and hear
something other than how she couldn t get chemotherapy that week because she was so weak and
was rushed to the hospital for a blood transfusion. I was tired of talking to people about it and

Chinese Philosophy Essay
Three areas of philosophy emerged amidst the chaos and constant warring of the Zhou era. The
three were called Confucianism, Daoism, and legalism. They were Chinese philosophies that
were thought to be the best ways to rule and achieve order in the society. Confucianism believed
that a ruler s job was to set a good example, and not order. Since people were thought of as
naturally good, they would following the right path based on their own conscience. Legalism was
a more harsh way of ruling, led by Hanfeizi. They thought people were evil, and needed strict laws
and punishment to keep them in line. Daoism was very different from either of the other two. It
was led by Laozi, who taught that the best kind of government was one who governed... Show more

At first, Confucianism was unsuccessful and Confucius, during his lifetime only managed to collect
a few followers. After his death, however, his followers passed on the Confucian tradition. It
survived, with a few changes, to the Han dynasty (221 BC) and became established as China s
official philosophy. From then it was firmly well established in Chinese culture, and its values can
still be seen today. The Five Classics of Confucianism were works from the Zhou Dynasty, which
preceded the Warring States Period. They were collected and edited by members of the original
Confucian school. After Confucianism became the official state philosophy, one had to know the
philosophy well in order to gain the coveted position of government official.
The Analects are a collection of sayings by Confucius, recorded by his disciples. As a result, the
Analects are not a widespread proposal of Confucianism. Rather, it is a collection of quotations and
stories. Because of this, Confucianism according to Confucius is open to interpretation. The main
idea of the philosophy is, righteousness, relationships and generosity towards others. Since the time
of the Han dynasty (206 CE) four life passages have been recognized and regulated by Confucian
tradition. There are approximately 6 million Confucians in the world. About 26,000 live

Stigmatization Of Black Queer Men Essay
Stigmatization of Black Queer Men For every Black man that is born, each is gifted with the
rigid expectations of being a hyper masculine male. These expectations seemed to be passed
down through generations from family members. The study African American Gay Youth and
Their Families: Redefining Masculinity, Coping with Racism and Homophobia. , portrays some
of the hardships of coming out within this specific community. A mother who was interviewed
in this study said You are told to be a man ... and being a man does not mean you sleep with other
men, she said. Being a man means you have a woman and you procreate and continue the family
name. And for queer black men especially, this expectation of needing a woman to be the
validation for your manhood takes a toll on them and their ability to feel safe in coming out. In
this essay I intend to outline the problematic expectations and stigmatization of the black queer
male community and develop ways in which this problem can start to be overcome while dealing
with different sections of intersectionality. Black men are often viewed as emotionless, physically
strong, hyper sexual, and mischievous. There are so many rules surrounding what passing is as a
man. However, not all of these rules are created by Black men themselves. These are the rules the
media portrays, neighbors portray and even women in elevators clutching their purses portray. For
anyone to be constantly bombarded with these stereotypes and not internalize

Magna Carta Vs English Bill Of Rights Analysis
During the formation of the United States, colonists were receptive to the governments that came
before them. Earlier governments, set strong precedents, and taught American Colonists the favored
methods of creating constitutions. Two examples of ideal constitutions were the Magna Carta and
the English Bill of Rights. The Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights were viewed by the
colonists and were stepping stones for the creation of the United States. Specific segments of these
documents were taken and transferred to the United States Constitution, due to the overall proof of
success and benefits that it presented to earlier governments. Without some of the principles set in
these two documents, the United States might not have been the way we see it today. In England,
the year 1215, the Magna Carta stood as the earliest example of a document limiting the king s
power. Many of the principles set by the Magna Carta, such as the rule of law, basic rights, and
government by agreement were transferred to the American Constitution. The most important
principle transferred, however, was the idea of limited government.... Show more content on

Symbolism In William Golding s The Lord Of The Flies
Authors have a sneaky way of revealing the greater themes that they are writing about in their
books. They reveal themes by using symbols to represent both the actual person or object and
also a deeper, hidden meaning. Placed through the story, symbols can be discovered if the reader
takes a close thoughtful look. In William Goldings, The Lord of the Flies, a group of school boys
are involved in a plane crash that leaves them stranded on a deserted island. The boys slowly begin
to lose their civilized nature and start turning into primitive savages. Golding uses symbols
throughout his story to demonstrate their crumbling society. The three most important symbols in
the novel are the conch shell, The Lord of the Flies and the face paint or masks.
The conch shell symbolizes the law and order of the boys old world, the adult world in which
the boys are used to following rules in. When Roger destroys the conch, chaos quickly takes over
because there is no leader or way to call a meeting anymore. Ralph and Piggy find the conch shell
on the beach at the beginning of the book and use it to call the boys to a meeting after the plane
crashes. The conch shell becomes a symbol of power, civilization and order in the book. The conch
shell represent power because Ralph was elected chief partially because he found it and was
holding the shell when the group was deciding on a leader. The shell helps the boys keep order in
their meetings, because only the boy who is holding on to

The Similarities Between Star Wars And Religion
The science fiction film, Star Wars, has a had a significant impact on modern culture today as it
relates to Greek mythology and religion. The popular film created by George Lucas uses many
symbols to demonstrate the similarities between the movie and culture, such as the Tusken Raiders
and the Nio. Fortunately, Star Warsstays open to all religions, allowing for different interpretations
of all characters. The concepts presented in the movie allow for all viewers to further their
knowledge of religion and understand the past in a more logical way.
A similarity between Star Wars and religion are heralds and R2 D2. A herald was someone who
carried a message, sometimes causing an adventure to begin. In the religion of Christianity,
Matthew was a herald because he shared how Jesus, rejected by Israel, sent the disciples to
preach the gospel to the world. In Star Wars, R2 D2 delivered the message that Princess Leia was
in trouble and she needed help from Obi Wan Kenobi. This lead Luke Skywalkeron an adventure to
figure out who Obi Wan Kenobi was and why Princess Leia was in trouble. Therefore, both heralds
and R2 D2 represent the messengers needed in order for a quest to unfold.
Another comparison between Star Wars and religion are the Nio and the Tusken Raiders. According
to Japanese tradition, the Nio were a group of guards that protected the Buddhist temples from those
trying to enter. Today, two muscular structures stand in front of some of the Buddhist temples in

Review Of The Jati

The Jati
Thousands of years ago in Asia, a book was written that gave social structure that would go on
through the ages in India. Today that social structure is called the Jati or in English words, the Caste
system. While it has undergone a few changes here and there, the system has relatively been
unchanged and just like thousands of years ago when it was first introduced in the Vedas, it exists in
modern day India as a part of society in it. This paper will go over a more detailed explanation of
the Jati as well as the classes and books that defined the Jati system, most notably the Laws of
Mandu . Jati translates to caste so in English it is called the Caste system. In the Jati system
there are four main castes one falls under: Shudra, Viasya, Kshatryia and Bhramin. Outside of the
caste system are the outcasts or also called untouchables. Within these main four castes there are
thousands of subcastes a group of people will fall under. One important thing to note where
unlike most social classes of ancient time, in the Jati system, it is possible to move up in the
caste. While a subcaste may not move up as an individually, the entire group can move up. So
while there is subcaste A and subcaste B. While Subcaste B is currently higher up on the caste it
is possibly for subcaste A as a whole to move up above subcaste B. This is the beauty of the Jati
system, groups are not permanently logged into one place

The Dubliners By James Joyce
James Joyce s 1914 collection of 15 short stories The Dubliners has the continuous theme of
money which further dwells into the idea of class systems, how colonies became a dichotomy,
and how in the end, the colonists were nearly the same. Since Joyce writes these stories in the
early 20th Century, there has been a large history behind colonization and the life that comes
with it. In using everyday examples or little segments of the average day, Joyce expresses the
idea and components of the class system in Dublin which shows the distinction and yet the
similarities between the impoverished and the well to do. James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was
born into a middle class family in 41 Brighton Square, Rathgar, Dublin, which is a fairly nice
area of Dublin. The family fell apart and they had to move to northern Dublin, a very undesirable
and unpleasant area to live in. In spite of having a out of order household with an alcoholic father
and unreliable income and finances, Joyce went to a prestigious Jesuit high school and excelled
there. Joyce then went on to college and transcended. With all these past experiences, Joyce had
learned the ways of living without the concern of money and had also learned the ways of living
with the concern of money and making ends meet. This situation was not rare, for in fact, it
happened to many denizens of Dublin. With this outlook and standpoint on life, Joyce was
compelled to write the tales of his miserable contemporaries. He compiled

Nathaniel Hawthorne Essay
Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of American literature s finest writers; his writing style was very
distinct and unusual in some aspects. It is his background that provided this ambiguous and
complex approach to writing. Hawthorne s New England heritage has, at times, been said to be
the contributing factor in his works. The Puritan view of life itself was considered to be
allegorical, their theology rested primarily on the idea of predestination and the separation of the
saved and the damned As evident from Hawthorne s writings his intense interest in Puritanical
beliefs often carried over to his novels such as, Young Goodman Brown, The Scarlet Letter, and
The Minister s Black Veil just to name a few of the more well known pieces of his work.... Show

Both men Dante and Young Goodman Brown embark on a somewhat spiritual journey and
come out of it with an insight that they never possessed before relating to the world and their
beliefs. Young Goodman Brown had the allegorical elements similar to Dante s Inferno with the
use of color, ambiguous statements and the representation of objects. An example of this type of
ambiguity of language is when the old man convinces Goodman Brown to come with him: Let
us walk on, nevertheless, reasoning as we go, and if I convince thee not, thou shalt turn back.
We are but a little way in the forest yet (Hawthorne 615) This statement can be taken one of two
ways, either for the literal sense in which the old man is urging him to come or for the
allegorical way in which this shows Goodman Brown has a choice in his destiny to make the
right decision and turn his back on Satan when he sees God s way is better. Upon returning home
Goodman Brown comes to the realization that all the people that meant most in his life that he
believed were righteous, upstanding, God fearing citizens were all guilty of being influenced by
the devil. Whether he dreamed this or not what happened to him in the forest changed his life in
such a dramatic way that it compels him to live the rest of it out in gloom and despair as evident
from this paragraph: Often, awakening suddenly at midnight, he shrank from the bosom of Faith,
and at morning or eventide, when the family knelt down at prayer, he

A Hunger Artist Analysis

ENGL MWF 11am
Explication Essay A Hunger Artist The children stood opened mouthed, holding each others hands
for security (Pg. 353) Passion and desire for attention are at its best what an artist live for. The
hunger artist is a man who wanted to be so great at his own craft that pain and suffering were a
small price to pay in order for people to give him recognition ultimately leading to his demise. The
series of events that lead to the hunger artist s death ultimately granted him the freedom to never
have to feel the urge to eat again and released him from the restraints that society put on his life.

then the hunger artist did not suffer and die in vein, instead he lives on as a martyr for those who
seek to do something like it in any sense and it should teach people to be thankful for the little

Enlightenment Thinkers Idea Of Progress Essay
The idea of progress is the idea that advances in technology, science, and social organization can
produce an improvement in the human condition. That is, people can become better in terms of
quality of life , or social progress, through economic development, modernization, and the
application of science and technology. The assumption is that the process will happen once people
apply their reason and skills. This ideal emerged primarily during the Enlightenment era in the 18th
century. Significant movements in this period were Diderot s Encyclopedia, which carried on the
campaign against authority and superstition, and the French Revolution. The Enlightenment
thinkers expressed great hope in the potential of humanity for resolving or eliminating economic,
social and political ills. In the nineteenth century, the idea of progress was united by Charles
Darwin and Herbert Spencer by their theories of evolution. Social Darwinism, which was Spencer s

Nationalist sentiment had reached levels of great intensity during the last decades of the 19th
Century. A sense of cultural and technological superiority was pervasive among the Great Powers.
All believed that their traditions, histories, cultural and technical achievements, and national
destinies were superior to those of their opponents. Imperialist ambitions, international/diplomatic
resentments, competition in an increasingly expanding industrial sphere, and a sense of military
superiority, all informed the nationalist spirit of the age. The principle of nationalism was not new,
but it had reached new heights of intensity in the nineteenth century, and this fervor generally

Walt Disney Informative Speech
Walt Disney Walt Disney is arguable the most famous animator and movie maker of all time.
When you think of animated movies, I am willing to bet that most of you immediately thought of
Disney, or something along those lines. I am here to tell you the story of Walter Elias Disney s
professional career as a business man and movie producer. The Disney Company got off to a
rough start but ended up pretty successful in the end. The Company started out small, in 1922,
making one to two minute advertisements. The Company sadly went bankrupt in 1923, only a year
after the start of the Company. Walt and his brother Roy packed up camp and went to Hollywood,

How To Write A Narrative Essay About Fishing
It seemed like a good idea at the time. Shortly after, I found out the opposite. When in the 5th
grade, I would often bike across my neighborhood to a public park with a small pond in it. I went
fishing in it with my friend, David, or sometimes even my little sister. While practicing a catch and
release style of fishingregularly, I decided to bring a fishhome one day. On the hazy summer day, I
was a carefree dolphin, cruising down the hill at a relaxed speed. My bicycle had a metal rack
behind the seat, to which I Duck Taped a bucket onto, with the purpose of carrying my tackle
box and fishing rod. My sister was closing in from behind on her purple Barbie bike by the time I
made it to the gravel path that led to the pond. When we got to the spot, I setup my sister s line
first, then I dropped my own hook down, right below the dock. Almost immediately, a bluegill
devoured the small chunk of a Slim Jim like a blood thirsty piranha. After I caught around 30
panfish, I landed one fish with very vibrant colors. I decided I wanted to bring it home and keep it
as a pet. So just before me and my sister departed from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

World War II had just ended a few years ago, marriageand birth rates dramatically increased, and
the divorce rate was declining. It was nicknamed the baby boom. The ideal family of the 1950 s
was the dad was the head of the household, he brought the paycheck, the mom did the cooking,
cleaning and taking care of the children and the kids were well behaved and courteous. In the
1950s the age for marrying had decreased from 24 for men to 22 and 21 for women to 20. This
was due mainly to the war which caused uncertainty in young couple s lives. Many women took
wartime jobs and they got to experience a sense of freedom they had never known before, when
the war was over they were pressured to return back to their domestic roles. Eventually being
someone s bride and wife was once again the goal of most women but one third of women still
made up the work force. The 1950s is viewed as a time of conformity for both men and women.
Women were much pressured to keep the family entity strong and together. The way to do this
best was by remaining at home to take care of her husband and children, and refusing to pursue a
career or go in the work force, or so they said. Working women were paid much less than men and
were still regarded as meek and inferior beings. Also, a common stereotype about women was that
they went to college to get a Mrs. (pronounced M.R.S.) degree, meaning a husband (PBS.Org).
Many women had other aspirations in life but because of society and media at that time a husband

The second character that Weir introduces is Frank (played by Mel Gibson). It is implied that

When being medically treated there are multiple factors that go into finding the correct
treatment. The first, most common type of treatment, is light therapy. This consists of sitting a
few feet away from a light box that mimics natural sunlight (ВЁSeasonal Affective Disorder
(SAD)ВЁ). Light therapy is usually the first line of treatment for all cases of SAD. People using
this treatment can feel better in a matter of days, but are still encouraged to continue use until
spring time when natural light is more available (ВЁSeasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

depressant before one s symptoms begin to take root (ВЁSeasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)ВЁ).
By treating before the effects set in this is also a way of prevention. The third and final type of
treatment is talk therapy, or psychotherapy. By going to therapy sessions like this one will learn
how to cope with SAD. It is important to identify negative thoughts that might make a person feel

The Lack Of The Political Corruption
Moreover, one of the largest negative consequences of the political corruption was the laziness
that was displayed officials. To the understanding of the officials, once they were in power, there
was no real need to do anything or make any changes. This could potentially stem from the idea
that they did not really have any true ideas on how to fix any of the problems that the local
populations were concerned about. Many of these men seemed to lack real political experience
but decided to run for office because of the prestige that came with it. There was also a lot of fear
from the public about things getting worse. Some politicians used Negative campaigning which
usually worked, and especially among people for whom the risks of change mattered more than the
possibilities form improvement. This infers the ability of the corrupt people in politicscontradicting
their election platforms. People were voting these men into office based on promises that they
would better things for them. This shows how men manipulated the pathway to government
positions, yet did nothing when they achieved them. It was common practice to defend what was
already in place than to propose something new, with all of its potential for bad consequences. This
concludes that running for election was not the only way that these men protected their livelihood
and name. By not proposing any sort of change to policy, they were not giving the people what they
had promised but also shielding their image

Women In Comedy Have to Be Double Threats to Be Taken...
Everyone knows that we live in a male dominated world. In the entertainment industry, as well as
every other profession in America, we see women struggling to be taken seriously. Fueled by the
media s obsession with appearances, women are under extreme pressure to look and act a certain
way to please the men around them. In the world of stand up comedy, there is another layer to that
pressure. I m talking about the pressure to be funny. A post circulating the internet displays a
triangle with the points labeled intelligent , good looking , and emotionally stable . In the center
are the words pick two . Replace emotionally stable with funny and you have the dilemma that
female comedians are faced with. In a male dominated industry, they are forced to decide whether
they want to reject today s idea of beauty and play up their wit and intelligence, or highlight their
appearance and play the dumb blonde for laughs. It is only recently that comediennes are refusing
to comprise their integrity to succeed.
Christopher Hitchens famously argued in a 2007 Vanity Fair that women aren t funny or haven t
developed their comedy skills because they don t have to. Comedy, he said, was a mating tool
and women don t need that particular arrow in their quiver because they are pretty and make
babies. But men, Hitchens said, get fat and bald so to attract women they either need wit or
wealth. Ergo, men have evolved their comedic skills to a greater level. Women are socialized out

Latino Gender And Gender Diversity
In 2013, Latinos accounted for only 4.9% of the roles in the top 100 films of the year. From the
beginning, Hollywood had always been dominated by white men and women. However, as time
progressed there was a very slight change in cultural and ethnic diversity. Though it is more likely
now than ever to find a Latino or Latina in a Hollywood film, their roles are often small,
stereotypical, and almost entirely unimportant. As if it wasn t hard enough to get any role in any
Hollywood film regardless of ethnicity, Latinos have to endure playing a harshly demeaning role.
Latino men are often cast as comedic relief and play gardeners, janitors, or thugs. Latino women are
often cast as maids or mistresses. Aside from this, when women are cast as mistresses they are often
submissive to their white male partners, meaning that not only are these roles ethnically demeaning,
but also sexist. Along with Latino female sexualisation, though, Latino men are also heavily
sexualized. Both Latino women and men have to deal with the exploitation of their culture for
stereotypical roles in a movie. However, these are only some of the vicious patterns that attribute to
the everlasting ethnic misrepresentation in the biggest part of mass media, Hollywood.
Latinos are some of the main consumers of pretty much any media. They re the ethnic group that
visit movie theaters most and they invest so much of their time and money to keep media outlets

Spielberg uses handheld cameras moving along with the soldiers. Crouching when the soldiers
crouch, running when the soldiers run, as if the viewers are watching the battle through a soldiers

Spielberg quoted that all the documentaries of the battle in Normandy were in black and white. Not
only had this motivated Spielberg to create his opening battle sequence with desaturated and dark

Dissociative Identity Disorder In Fight Club
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multi Personality Disorder, occurs
when an individual experiences a loss or discontinuity in memory, identity, or consciousness
(Schacter, Gilbert, Wegner, Nook, 2014). Psychologist believe DID occurs in individuals who
suffered an extremely traumatic situation at a young age as well as a way for overwhelmed

Analysis Of Strange Memes, By Sherry Turkle
Humans have mastered the skill of copying others. Mostly everyone follows what they were
shown; they copy whatever they were taught. This is the idea of memes being passed down. Susan

Creatures, what memes are and how the theory of selfish memetheory is being shown throughout
living creatures. Meme is the ideaof imitating someone else s thoughts. Selfish is implied as
thoughts being passed down and trying to dominate other thoughts. Memes spread randomly and
humans continue to use those same thoughts. Mostly no one believes in creating their own

Turkle describes how everyone has become desperate to their gadgets. She talks more about
people becoming dependent and how people want technology. Blackmore s theory applies to
Turkle s examples of the use of technology. The idea that the use of technology is a meme.
Everyone believes the use of technology is necessary for daily lives since it has become normal to

Australian History
Evolution of the Australian Colony Throughout the long history of the Australian colony, it
experienced great imperialism, exploration, conquest, and postcolonialism, revolution, conflict,
trade, human and environmental change, and the evolution of a progressive nation through
colonialism. In the effect of imperialism, exploration, conquest, and postcolonialism, Australiahas
faced many difficulties, but established a secure foundation that has not broken throughout the
rebellions and wars that have plagued Australian history. Although the Australian revolution
withheld many casualties, it is one of the most important events in their history, as it united the
republicans and aboriginals to fight as one. Conflict was a battle Australia... Show more content on

The war was fought from 1922 1926 between the republic of australia (Republicans) and the
Queensland Republic (Queenies). The war was caused when Queensland, largely the east part of
Australia, seceded from the newly declared Republic Australia. This created a feeling of
superiority from Queensland to the western counterparts. After western australians were elected
into office, this led to the succession. Although the war was fought in superiority, aboriginal
equality was a vital part of the war. Australia used the apartheid system for years before General
Rainford declared the Aboriginal Edict during the war. This made Rainford highly unpopular in
the east. During the war, Rainford stepped forward, asking to create a truce. The Queensland
officials refused to go to Perth, the new capital, for the convention, which led to Rainford
traveling to Brisbane. Once reaching Brisbane, the Queensland officials refused to sit at a table
with the aboriginals until it was promised that no body parts would touch the table. The officials
continued to treat the aboriginals with disrespect, even going as far to call the aboriginals savages,
which angered Rainford. Before leaving, he called the officials fat cats and stormed out. On August
seventh, the Queensland army of four thousand bombed the republican of one thousand four
hundred at Fort Lasseter. Queensland walked from the war victorious on August tenth. By then,
the new Republic of Queensland s flag was flying proudly above the fort. General Patrick
Cowpens and Howard Newfield both failed attempts to take back Brisbane. Grant Odyssey
organized the Odyssey invasion, in which he struck at the Queensland Republic at many points,
fighting with the aboriginals who aided him in this attack. Odyssey was able to defeat General
Roberts at the third Battle of Dumaresq. When

Impossible Expectations By Stephen Hinshaw
Michelle Plante
10/10/12
How Society s Expectations of Females Shape Girls Lives Society s high expectations of females
guide their everyday actions and decision making whether consciously or subconsciously. In
Stephen Hinshaw s essay Impossible Expectations he discusses what he calls the Triple Bind
where girls are supposed to be good at both typical girl and guy things as well as conform to a
specific set of standards created by society. These contradictory expectations shape girls lives and
drive their decision making from what type of career they will pursue to how they dress. Hinshaw
also explained that girls are supposed to fit a cookie cutter image portrayed by the media yet
encouraged to break the mold at the same time, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Hinshaw, pleasing others is a typical female trait. Erica didn t really want to go to
the club to mess around with guys, but she did it because Jasmine was her friend and she may
have felt obligated to go with her. She didn t feel comfortable with what Jasmine was doing, yet
she chose to go along with everything anyway to avoid confrontation. It wasn t until the point
where she didn t feel safe that she finally chose to abandon Jasmine at the hotel. In today s society,
Hinshaw pointed out that girls are expected to be good at the typical male things. Because of this,
girls are more focused on their career and education rather than starting a family. In today s
competitive environment, girl skills are not enough (Hinshaw 826). On top of female skills,
girls must also be more assertive like guys, excel in school to get into a good college, and be a
good athlete. The narrator in The Story of My Body displayed the struggle to meet these
expectations even though that involved doing things she didn t want to do. She was a smart girl
who was not interested in sports, yet wanted to be picked for teams in her gym class: I wanted to
be wanted. I wanted to be chosen for the teams (Cofer 80). It wasn t until later in her life that she
finally focused on the things she truly wanted and was good at.

The Environmental Movement In The Film Simb King Of The...
When thinking of the environmental movement in America, it is presumably just thought of as the
effects climate change and left winged ideas, but the history of the movement is much more
complex than its current state. As Europeans began colonializing America, the wilderness was a
vast and plentiful resource and new settlers quickly conquered new land. As America was created
into an industrialized and urbanized nation, debates occurred on what environmentof our newfound
country should hold. The environmental movement started with conserving and preserving
wilderness resources as an American idea, which is shown in the film Simba: King of the Beasts,
and shifts to the modern environmental movement were the effects of industrialized American have
effects on human health and quality of life shown in the film Blue Vinyl.
As America expanded, companies demanding more natural resources for the growing populations,
which became the roots of the conservation movement. The federal government began granting
land to states, such as Yosemite (1864) and Yellowstone (1872) to conserve for public
enjoyment (Boger, 9/11). Elitist women began using their privileges to decrease the popularity
of some animal produces, such as plumes, which lead to the formation of the Audubon society in
1896 and the Lacey Act that prohibited trade of illegal animals (Boger, 9/11). According to
Professor Boger s timeline, the National Park service became established in 1916 to protect the
land for future generations to observe. By saving the American frontier, the public believed that
they were continuing the preservation of the way of American life. The Frontier Thesis argued by
Frederick Turner in 1893, stated that the frontier was critical to the US identity and success.
(Boger, 9/11) By saying that the frontier of America was closed, people became more interested in
wildlife and wilderness protection to keep America prosperous.
To save the wilderness and preserve the American way, propaganda was created to spread the idea
to the American public. As talked about in Professor Boger s lecture (9/11), elite clubs, such as the
Boone and Crocket Club and the American Bison Society, were formed to purpose methods for

My Composition Class Analysis
Upon entering college, I was actually quite nervous about what to expect from my Composition I
class. I d seen the films, read the articles and heard from others about all the insane deadlines and
stress that came with that. I never enjoyed writing or English class in general, but taking
Composition I has changed my views on both. This class has benefitted me in several ways, as
both a student and a writer. I have learned how to write more effectively, expanded my writing
methods, and learned how to properly use different grammar techniques. At the start of the fall

The Influence Of Social Perception In America
In America, one of the most important characteristics regarding this country would be the way
people perceive our nation s leaders, such as the president. Ideally, it would be beneficial to
American citizens that the nation s leader be perceived in a positive light with accompanying
characteristics such as strong, intelligent, caring, motivated, likeable, experienced, etc. It is evident,
however, that different people hold different views about each individual president. This is because
humans are capable of forming impressions of other individuals without ever meeting them based
on the behaviors, choices, and mannerisms of that other person. In fact, to observe various
psychological phenomena that influence social perception in this world,

Philippines Annexation

US History

Wednesday December 3, 2014
Although controversial to some, the Americans made the right decision to annex the Philippines
after successfully freeing them from Spanish tyranny and rule. Without American rule and support,
the Philippines would have been an easy target to be taken over by Germany, England or Japan
who all would have savaged the land and further suppressed the people. The Filipinos were weak,
inexperienced and not ready to establish their own government and self rule themselves. During the
time of the annexation, the Americans needed a strategic place in that part of the world to protect
their interests, expand their trading partners and show the world they were a power to be ... Show

The part of the world where the Philippines lies was one of the most volatile and dangerous in the
world. That being said, it also had some of the most profitable trade routes, richest resources and
was a vital part of the world to have a stronghold. By following through with the annexation of the
Philippines, the Americans were able to gain a stronghold on the other side of the world, enrich
themselves by gaining access to the valuable resources that were so plentiful and to take the time
to help spread freedom and democracy. William McKinley clearly believed and stated that we
could not turn them over to France and Germany our commercial rivals in the Orient that would be
bad business and discreditable.
There were many arguments as to the merits of annexing the Philippines or to walk away and
grant them their immediate freedom. The Filipinos had been tormented, had their land savaged
and destroyed by Spain for so long, there was truly only one humane and correct decision and that
was to annex the Philippines. The Americans although financially gained from the decision, never
waivered from their long term commitment to help to train, educate and prepare the Filipinos to
self rule and govern. Establishing a stronghold in that part of the world helped the Americans
establish themselves as a world power and leader in personal freedoms and spreading of democratic
governments. With America and its military located on the Philippines they were able to

Inherently, the focus of God is love and to respect His authority is to love Him. Learning to
worship God as Trinity involves more than just searching for creative techniques. We need to
know about the nature of our triune God if we are to worship him and enjoy him properly (Shaw
79). Often when I feel discouraged, the instinct is to blame God, the creator of everything.
Sometimes I get so wrapped up in my own selfishness, that I forget all the things God has done,
not just for me, but also for the world. His mercy is compassionate love for sinners who do not
deserve the redemption in Christ that he offers. His grace likewise speaks of his free favor
granted to sinners (Shaw 81). I am also reminded that God is transcendent. He surpasses time
and money, earth and space. God is so important, that metaphors are constantly referred to as
representing God: God is a rock, God is the light, God is the bread, God is a fortress, God is the
potter and we are the clay (GCU text). According to the text, creation and humanity are the work
of a triune God. Creation includes the entire activity of God. In creation all three persons are at
work simultaneously, including the Holy Spirit (Gen 1:2) and the Word (John 1:1) (Chapter 5). 3

Health Information Exchange And The Medical Record And...
Interoperability means the ability to share the medical record and exchange of data between
information systems, which helps to achieve quality care. What is health information exchange?
It is aimed to provide a complete view of patient s information for clinicians who have the
responsibility to make decisions for treatment for the better outcome. HIEs would enable the
sharing of record between doctors offices, hospitals and laboratories, and security levels would
be determined by the level of data needing to be exchanged. One thing is for real there is no
perfect world. HIEs are happening, it is up to the EHRs and administrators to figure out how best to
assist the process. We all should know the reason for HIEs is to improve patient outcome, design
new patient care and delivery system and decrease the cost of medical care. About 75 million
Americans suffer from multiple chronic conditions, which means they require multiple providers
for their care. HIEs is the key like these situations for proper diagnosis and there should be adequate
communications between the providers. They require communication or exchange of data for
coordination of care for this patient. In these instances, health care providers and patients frequently
lack pertinent and useful information where treatment decisions are made. In today s advanced
technology, EHRs offer the substantial part to capture and share health information. The vendors,

Mystery is the key for interesting characters and therefore an interesting story. The Moonstone, a

Moonstone. The Moonstone has made its way into the Verinder House on the night of Rachel
Verinder s eighteenth birthday, and the trouble starts from there. Rachel Verinder and Franklin

Franklin Blake was a very confusing character for he had his French side, and his German side, and
his Italian side and so forth (Collins 47). His character could fluctuate from being a model of
determination and a spectacle of helplessness in a matter of seconds (Collins 47). He and Rachel
were in love, yet later in the novel they could not bear to look at one another, leaving the reader
(and other characters in the book) to infer that the Moonstone was behind their bickering. There
were times when Mr. Blake was innocent, and others when he appeared guilty. For example,
Franklin Blake was actually seen by Rachel, taking the Indian diamond out from her cabinet in
the middle of the night. You villain, I saw you take the Diamond with my own eyes! Rachel had
yelled at Franklin later in the story. But, the plot twist was that Mr. Blake could remember
nothing of taking the diamond. With the later help of Ezra Jennings, who cleared Franklin Blake
of accusations by proving that Franklin took the Diamond, in a state of trance, produced by
opium which had been secretly administered to Blake by Mr. Candy, an opinionated doctor whom
simply wished to prove a point (Collins 354). But there was still the mystery as to what happened
after Franklin Blake took the Diamond up to his room. But everything came together in the end,

  • 2. Standardized Testing Has Made A Huge Impact Not Only On... Standardized testing has made a huge impact not only on our educational system, it has also had a negative impact on certain groups of students. One of the groups of students that have been affected by standardized testing the most are English Language Learners (ELL). ELL s are expected to take and pass a testthat they are not able to read and understand. It is not fair to make students take a test in a language that they are still learning and will not be able to comprehend. Although there are modified tests for ELL s to take hardly any of them can qualify for it. They are left taking a test they are not able to understand. Different accommodations should be made to help the ELL s who do not qualify for the modified test, but are also not qualified to take the regular test. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was implemented in an effort to help students learn and meet their full potential academically. The NCLB was put into place by the government to have more of an input in the standards that schools must meet. The Common Core initiative was implemented to make schools in every state equal and have the same curriculum. Texas is one of the states that has decided not to adhere to the Common Core initiative. Texas s standards are based on Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Standardized testsare the formal assessments schools use to make sure students are meeting the required state standards. The standardized test that Texas uses for assessment is called the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Dawes Act Of 1887 Indigenous peoples of the United States have been persecuted against since the birth of the nation. As years progressed, the Indians were stripped of their identity and exposed to the realities of the American lifestyle a lifestyle that failed to coincide with the traditions and culture they possessed years prior to the influx of Americans into western territory. As desire for this territory increased due to economic ventures, and the ultimate desire to expand due to Manifest Destiny, measures needed to be taken to ensure the land was to be in full possession of the government. Thus, the Dawes Act was enacted in 1887, which allotted new lands to Indians in exchange for American citizenship. While its promise could be construed as a generous gesture by the government, the act in reality was nothing but a gesture; it was a burden. Therefore, the Dawes Act of 1887, along with other attempts of Indian assimilation, threatened family ties and culture, stripped them of sacred lands, and proved that citizenship came with a fatal denunciation of their culture. The Dawes Act not only impacted the current inhabitants of the indigenous lands, it also affected the future generation of Indians; since the culture was being readjusted to be acceptable for American standards. On the new lands granted to the Indians were private government run boarding schools in order to successfully assimilate children of the native population into society. In Document F, the weekly lesson plan of the Day ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Examples Of Conformism In Catcher In The Rye In the 1950s, American economy was booming after the World War II. Rates of unemployment and inflation were low, and wages were high. However, the American society had its flaws despite all the success it was having. One of the most popular novels of the time, The Cather In The Rye written by JD Salinger, discussed the flaws in the society Americans had failed to realize. Throughout the novel, Salinger criticized many aspects of American Society such as the idea of conformity and the ignorance of teenager s lives. One of Salinger s criticism on American society was the idea of conformity where everyone was to match with one another. During the 1950s, Americans were following these norms of behaving in the same way as one another. For example, they lived in houses that looked identical, wore the same types of clothing and many others. Richard Powers stated in Life of a 1950s Teenagers, What I remember most about the 50s were rules. Rules, rules, rules... for everything. Rules about clothes which clothes you could wear when. [...] Rules about streets. Rules about play. Rules were placed on every American, especially children, on how to act at certain places, what to wear and others. These norms slowly became a part of the Americans daily lives. In The Catcher In The Rye, Salinger opposed the idea of conformity through the main character, Holden Caufield. Holden was a teenager who rebels against conformity by not doing what is expected of him by his parents. He kept on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The And Its Effect On The Nanoscale Introduction Nanotechnology is the study of particles on the nanoscale with, at least one dimension being less than 100nm. (Chen, Schluesener, 2008) Nanoscale particles can come in many shapes and sizes, ranging from 100 1 nm. These particles can be found as rods, cones, spheres and many more complex matrices and patterns as seen in figure 1.(Champion, Katare, Mitragotri, 2007) Nanosilver will form a roughly spherical shape as can be seen in figure 2. (Utopia Silver Supplements, 2012) In the medical industry there is high demand for antibacterial and antiseptic products, especially in hospitals and other medical institutes. Antibacterial products fall into two categories, residue producing, that provide a long lasting antibacterial action like triclosan, and non residue producing which are generally fast acting and can rapidly kill bacteria and disappear quickly leaving no residues, like alcohols. To A Utilitarian, This Would Not Apply As They Are Not To a Utilitarian, this would not apply as they are not bound by the holy scripture, the divine command, they would view this as, it s their own decision to decide what to do with their own body, no government, no authority or any other person can interfere on what their right is. It is their own absolute autonomy to make their own decision, whether they choose to die. Jeremy Bentham associates utilitarianism with ancient hedonism, where actions are resulting in the pursuit of happiness. This would achieve the best health care system for the society; since we would be saving all the patients coming through the emergency room. Also, some patients feel hopeless when the clinicians are making their decisions for them, however, when clinicians are dealing with competent, rational patients, patients can take part of the decision making on their own treatment, the dilemma happens when the patient is not rational, incompetent, like a patient without an advanced directive for healthcare and being in a persistent vegetative state, or coma and unable to make their own decisions. An advantage to a utilitarian theory would be; if a terminal ill person wanted to die, and family members did not object to the person wanting to die, then the Mercy killing would be viewed as acceptable. Similarly, utilitarian s are not bound to the holy scripture, so the command, Though shall not kill , also has no effect on what is morally right or what is morally wrong for a utilitarian person wanting to die, so if they majority of the family are okay with the person wanting to die by voluntary euthanasia, then it would be viewed as acceptable. However, the disadvantage to this would be, what about the minority? Being utilitarian, and being a minority would not be in your favor, because the majority would always win. When I was a sophomore my mother was diagnosed with cancer and as a result, I have spent most of my college career dealing emotional with the result. She is free of disease as of right now but it was a long and tumultuous journey to get there. I practically spent 2 years without a mother because she was so sick and I had to take her role. I organized family events, cooked them meals when I could, did their shopping all while going to school three hours away and having constant fear that my mother and the love of my life was going to die. That is only my personal struggle with it, not even taking into account her trauma or my fathers or brothers. It almost seems selfish to reflect on this because it was nothing compared to what she was going through. I went through stages where I was horrified and so scared and then I was angry and selfish. I wanted my mother back, I wanted her to make me dinner when I came home from college and send me care packages again. • 10. Chinese Philosophy Essay Three areas of philosophy emerged amidst the chaos and constant warring of the Zhou era. The three were called Confucianism, Daoism, and legalism. They were Chinese philosophies that were thought to be the best ways to rule and achieve order in the society. Confucianism believed that a ruler s job was to set a good example, and not order. Since people were thought of as naturally good, they would following the right path based on their own conscience. Legalism was a more harsh way of ruling, led by Hanfeizi. They thought people were evil, and needed strict laws and punishment to keep them in line. Daoism was very different from either of the other two. At first, Confucianism was unsuccessful and Confucius, during his lifetime only managed to collect a few followers. After his death, however, his followers passed on the Confucian tradition. It survived, with a few changes, to the Han dynasty (221 BC) and became established as China s official philosophy. From then it was firmly well established in Chinese culture, and its values can still be seen today. The Five Classics of Confucianism were works from the Zhou Dynasty, which preceded the Warring States Period. They were collected and edited by members of the original Confucian school. After Confucianism became the official state philosophy, one had to know the philosophy well in order to gain the coveted position of government official. The Analects are a collection of sayings by Confucius, recorded by his disciples. As a result, the Analects are not a widespread proposal of Confucianism. Rather, it is a collection of quotations and stories. Because of this, Confucianism according to Confucius is open to interpretation. The main idea of the philosophy is, righteousness, relationships and generosity towards others. • 11. Stigmatization Of Black Queer Men Essay Stigmatization of Black Queer Men For every Black man that is born, each is gifted with the rigid expectations of being a hyper masculine male. These expectations seemed to be passed down through generations from family members. The study African American Gay Youth and Their Families: Redefining Masculinity, Coping with Racism and Homophobia. , portrays some of the hardships of coming out within this specific community. A mother who was interviewed in this study said You are told to be a man ... and being a man does not mean you sleep with other men, she said. Being a man means you have a woman and you procreate and continue the family name. And for queer black men especially, this expectation of needing a woman to be the validation for your manhood takes a toll on them and their ability to feel safe in coming out. In this essay I intend to outline the problematic expectations and stigmatization of the black queer male community and develop ways in which this problem can start to be overcome while dealing with different sections of intersectionality. Black men are often viewed as emotionless, physically strong, hyper sexual, and mischievous. There are so many rules surrounding what passing is as a man. However, not all of these rules are created by Black men themselves. These are the rules the media portrays, neighbors portray and even women in elevators clutching their purses portray. • 12. Magna Carta Vs English Bill Of Rights Analysis During the formation of the United States, colonists were receptive to the governments that came before them. Earlier governments, set strong precedents, and taught American Colonists the favored methods of creating constitutions. Two examples of ideal constitutions were the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights. The Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights were viewed by the colonists and were stepping stones for the creation of the United States. Specific segments of these documents were taken and transferred to the United States Constitution, due to the overall proof of success and benefits that it presented to earlier governments. Without some of the principles set in these two documents, the United States might not have been the way we see it today. In England, the year 1215, the Magna Carta stood as the earliest example of a document limiting the king s power. Many of the principles set by the Magna Carta, such as the rule of law, basic rights, and government by agreement were transferred to the American Constitution. The most important principle transferred, however, was the idea of limited government.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These freedoms established by the English Bill of Rights are related to the natural rights philosophy in many ways. One of these ways is because of the basic human rights. • 13. Symbolism In William Golding s The Lord Of The Flies Authors have a sneaky way of revealing the greater themes that they are writing about in their books. They reveal themes by using symbols to represent both the actual person or object and also a deeper, hidden meaning. Placed through the story, symbols can be discovered if the reader takes a close thoughtful look. In William Goldings, The Lord of the Flies, a group of school boys are involved in a plane crash that leaves them stranded on a deserted island. The boys slowly begin to lose their civilized nature and start turning into primitive savages. Golding uses symbols throughout his story to demonstrate their crumbling society. The three most important symbols in the novel are the conch shell, The Lord of the Flies and the face paint or masks. The conch shell symbolizes the law and order of the boys old world, the adult world in which the boys are used to following rules in. When Roger destroys the conch, chaos quickly takes over because there is no leader or way to call a meeting anymore. • 14. The Similarities Between Star Wars And Religion The science fiction film, Star Wars, has a had a significant impact on modern culture today as it relates to Greek mythology and religion. The popular film created by George Lucas uses many symbols to demonstrate the similarities between the movie and culture, such as the Tusken Raiders and the Nio. Fortunately, Star Warsstays open to all religions, allowing for different interpretations of all characters. The concepts presented in the movie allow for all viewers to further their knowledge of religion and understand the past in a more logical way. A similarity between Star Wars and religion are heralds and R2 D2. A herald was someone who carried a message, sometimes causing an adventure to begin. In the religion of Christianity, Matthew was a herald because he shared how Jesus, rejected by Israel, sent the disciples to preach the gospel to the world. In Star Wars, R2 D2 delivered the message that Princess Leia was in trouble and she needed help from Obi Wan Kenobi. This lead Luke Skywalkeron an adventure to figure out who Obi Wan Kenobi was and why Princess Leia was in trouble. Therefore, both heralds and R2 D2 represent the messengers needed in order for a quest to unfold. Another comparison between Star Wars and religion are the Nio and the Tusken Raiders. • 15. Review Of The Jati Aaron Thomas Nancey Moore HIS 111 4106 9 September 2015 The Jati Thousands of years ago in Asia, a book was written that gave social structure that would go on through the ages in India. Today that social structure is called the Jati or in English words, the Caste system. While it has undergone a few changes here and there, the system has relatively been unchanged and just like thousands of years ago when it was first introduced in the Vedas, it exists in modern day India as a part of society in it. This paper will go over a more detailed explanation of the Jati as well as the classes and books that defined the Jati system, most notably the Laws of Mandu . Jati translates to caste so in English it is called the Caste system. In the Jati system there are four main castes one falls under: Shudra, Viasya, Kshatryia and Bhramin. Outside of the caste system are the outcasts or also called untouchables. Within these main four castes there are thousands of subcastes a group of people will fall under. One important thing to note where unlike most social classes of ancient time, in the Jati system, it is possible to move up in the caste. While a subcaste may not move up as an individually, the entire group can move up. So while there is subcaste A and subcaste B. While Subcaste B is currently higher up on the caste it is possibly for subcaste A as a whole to move up above subcaste B. This is the beauty of the Jati system, groups are not permanently logged into one place ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. The Dubliners By James Joyce James Joyce s 1914 collection of 15 short stories The Dubliners has the continuous theme of money which further dwells into the idea of class systems, how colonies became a dichotomy, and how in the end, the colonists were nearly the same. Since Joyce writes these stories in the early 20th Century, there has been a large history behind colonization and the life that comes with it. In using everyday examples or little segments of the average day, Joyce expresses the idea and components of the class system in Dublin which shows the distinction and yet the similarities between the impoverished and the well to do. James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was born into a middle class family in 41 Brighton Square, Rathgar, Dublin, which is a fairly nice area of Dublin. The family fell apart and they had to move to northern Dublin, a very undesirable and unpleasant area to live in. In spite of having a out of order household with an alcoholic father and unreliable income and finances, Joyce went to a prestigious Jesuit high school and excelled there. Joyce then went on to college and transcended. With all these past experiences, Joyce had learned the ways of living without the concern of money and had also learned the ways of living with the concern of money and making ends meet. This situation was not rare, for in fact, it happened to many denizens of Dublin. With this outlook and standpoint on life, Joyce was compelled to write the tales of his miserable contemporaries. It is his background that provided this ambiguous and complex approach to writing. Hawthorne s New England heritage has, at times, been said to be the contributing factor in his works. The Puritan view of life itself was considered to be allegorical, their theology rested primarily on the idea of predestination and the separation of the saved and the damned As evident from Hawthorne s writings his intense interest in Puritanical beliefs often carried over to his novels such as, Young Goodman Brown, The Scarlet Letter, and The Minister s Black Veil just to name a few of the more well known pieces of his work.... Both men Dante and Young Goodman Brown embark on a somewhat spiritual journey and come out of it with an insight that they never possessed before relating to the world and their beliefs. Young Goodman Brown had the allegorical elements similar to Dante s Inferno with the use of color, ambiguous statements and the representation of objects. An example of this type of ambiguity of language is when the old man convinces Goodman Brown to come with him: Let us walk on, nevertheless, reasoning as we go, and if I convince thee not, thou shalt turn back. We are but a little way in the forest yet (Hawthorne 615) This statement can be taken one of two ways, either for the literal sense in which the old man is urging him to come or for the allegorical way in which this shows Goodman Brown has a choice in his destiny to make the right decision and turn his back on Satan when he sees God s way is better. Upon returning home Goodman Brown comes to the realization that all the people that meant most in his life that he believed were righteous, upstanding, God fearing citizens were all guilty of being influenced by the devil. Whether he dreamed this or not what happened to him in the forest changed his life in such a dramatic way that it compels him to live the rest of it out in gloom and despair as evident from this paragraph: Often, awakening suddenly at midnight, he shrank from the bosom of Faith, and at morning or eventide, when the family knelt down at prayer, he ... That is, people can become better in terms of quality of life , or social progress, through economic development, modernization, and the application of science and technology. The assumption is that the process will happen once people apply their reason and skills. This ideal emerged primarily during the Enlightenment era in the 18th century. Almost immediately, a bluegill devoured the small chunk of a Slim Jim like a blood thirsty piranha. After I caught around 30 panfish, I landed one fish with very vibrant colors. In the 1950s the age for marrying had decreased from 24 for men to 22 and 21 for women to 20. This was due mainly to the war which caused uncertainty in young couple s lives. Many women took wartime jobs and they got to experience a sense of freedom they had never known before, when the war was over they were pressured to return back to their domestic roles. In the world of stand up comedy, there is another layer to that pressure. I m talking about the pressure to be funny. A post circulating the internet displays a triangle with the points labeled intelligent , good looking , and emotionally stable . In the center are the words pick two . Replace emotionally stable with funny and you have the dilemma that female comedians are faced with. In a male dominated industry, they are forced to decide whether they want to reject today s idea of beauty and play up their wit and intelligence, or highlight their appearance and play the dumb blonde for laughs. It is only recently that comediennes are refusing to comprise their integrity to succeed. Latino men are often cast as comedic relief and play gardeners, janitors, or thugs. Latino women are often cast as maids or mistresses. Aside from this, when women are cast as mistresses they are often submissive to their white male partners, meaning that not only are these roles ethnically demeaning, but also sexist. Along with Latino female sexualisation, though, Latino men are also heavily sexualized. Both Latino women and men have to deal with the exploitation of their culture for stereotypical roles in a movie. However, these are only some of the vicious patterns that attribute to the everlasting ethnic misrepresentation in the biggest part of mass media, Hollywood. Latinos are some of the main consumers of pretty much any media. They re the ethnic group that visit movie theaters most and they invest so much of their time and money to keep media outlets such as movies and TV shows going. However, they re ... In 2009 Kurzweil predicts that humans are generally far removed from the scene of battle and that warfare is dominated by unmanned intelligent airborne devices (Kurzweil 197). This is due to the fact that a war that consists entirely of machines would be impossible to fund, humans will always have the instinct to fight, and today we do not have the technology enabling machines to be able to make ethical decisions that humans can. The ability to fund a war consisting entirely of machines would be an impossible feat for the wealthiest nations, let alone one severely in debt like our own. The United States is currently experiencing a national debt of over $18.4 trillion which is continuing to rise at an unprecedented rate(usdebtclock.org). At a cost of approximately $40 million dollars the U.S. has developed the RQ 1 Predator drone (militaryfactory.com). Although it does play an important role in today s warfare, with the national debt continuing to rise there is no way the United States [could continue being] the world s dominant military power by producing an army of machines as Kurzweil foresees. Some might say that spending in the military has never stopped us before why should it now? If we increase our spending in the military by such a degree we will reach our debt ceiling just as we did in October of 2013 essentially causing a government shutdown. This is why we continue to see the use of humans in war simply because humans are the most economical way to fight a war and to remain the world s dominant military power. The logic behind the regime s undiplomatic response to the protests is traced back to previous protests such as that in the late 70 s and early 80 s where the Iranian Revolution inspired Syrians to rally against the regime s tyrannical behavior. The Syrian regime responded to these protests by leveling entire cities through the use of artillery, killing an estimated 10,000 to 30,0000 people. This created a feeling of superiority from Queensland to the western counterparts. After western australians were elected into office, this led to the succession. Although the war was fought in superiority, aboriginal equality was a vital part of the war. Australia used the apartheid system for years before General Rainford declared the Aboriginal Edict during the war. This made Rainford highly unpopular in the east. During the war, Rainford stepped forward, asking to create a truce. The Queensland officials refused to go to Perth, the new capital, for the convention, which led to Rainford traveling to Brisbane. Once reaching Brisbane, the Queensland officials refused to sit at a table with the aboriginals until it was promised that no body parts would touch the table. The officials continued to treat the aboriginals with disrespect, even going as far to call the aboriginals savages, which angered Rainford.
