Plague In Catherine
In pages eight to eighty three, Jane Austen interests the reader in Catherine by either making the
reader feel supportive of Catherine or ,mostly, making the reader feel superior to Catherine when they
find her behaviour endearing or annoying. Jane Austen achieves this by showing how much Catherine
worries for her relationships with the Tilneys, especially after a horrible incident with the Thorpe
family and by using strong language for her character. Also, Jane Austen interests the reader in
Catherine by mocking the behaviour of Gothic romance novel heroines by using Catherine s
personality and behaviour as a parody of that.
Firstly, Jane Austen interests us in Catherine by using strong language for Catherine s character. On

On page 80, at the theatre, Catherine states that the comedy so well suspended her care . Jane Austen
interests us in Catherine by showing the reader that Catherine s worries about her relationship with the
Tilney s can easily be forgotten when she watches a simple comedy play. This makes the reader feel
superior to Catherine as we know her worries are not as strong as she thinks they are, the reader
knows this because Catherine can easily be distracted from her worries. The verb to suspend means to
temporarily prevent from continuing. Normally, the verb to suspend is used when students are
prohibited from coming to school as the result of breaking a school rule. Usage of the verb suspended
in this context makes the worries that Catherine had seem mandatory, almost as if they were a rule. By
making Catherine s worries about her relationships with the Tilneys seem as if they are a rule that
must be followed interest the reader in Catherine as she behaving like a heroine in a Gothic romance
novel who worries all the time about petty matters. Moreover, this makes us feel superior to Catherine
which makes us care for Catherine and her worries for her

Strength of the Human Spirit Revealed by Ivan Denisovich...
Strength of the Human Spirit Revealed in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
Life can be incredibly hard at times; nearly everyone encounters a period of time when circumstances
become unbearably difficult. Imagine being assigned to ten years of unceasing and tremendous
hardships, as is the plight of the protagonist in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander
Solzhenitsyn. This book describes in detail only one day of Ivan s ten year sentence in a Russian work
camp in the 1950 s. During this day, which is like most others, he is starved, nearly frozen,
overworked, and punished unjustly; however, as the day unfolds, it is obvious that Ivan will never
give up and never give in. The character of Ivan Denisovich is a ... Show more content on

As Ivan dresses, he remembers with disgust that his work gang may be assigned to a new job, building
a Socialist Community Development in the middle of a cold field covered in icy snow. A fellow
prisoner claims, It s at least twenty below (6) outside and Ivan knows that the only way he and his
gang will keep warm out on the field will be to work hard and fast, which will be difficult given the
conditions and limited food rations. Ivan and his gang know that the men in the other gangs are just as
weak as they are; no other gang receives any more food rations, or more clothing than they do.
Regardless, the gang boss plans to palm the job off on some other gang (4).
In a struggle for survival, nearly all human beings will gladly pawn their pain and hardships off onto
other, struggling human beings. Therefore, Ivan and his gang act only as any other humans would act
in such a situation. The symbolism is apparent when it is understood that humans, even those who are
not in such extreme positions of survival as a Russian work camp, act in this manner. Ivan and his
gang, in their time of desperate struggle, reflect the actions of average human beings in simple, day to
day struggles.
Ivan, at this point, has lived in the camp for eight years. Before his arrest, he had been a carpenter and
a soldier with a family, and a life of his own, and now, because of harsh physical and emotional
conditions, he has become hard; even his

Impact Of Imperialism In Korea
Japanese Imperialism in Korea and Korea s Police/Military Era As I stood on a mountain pass, looking
down on the valley leading to Inch Con, I recalled these words of my friend. The Ôstrong hand of
Japan was certainly being shown here. I beheld in front of me village after village reduced to ashes.
Destruction, thorough and complete, had fallen upon it. Not a single house was left, and not a single
wall of a house. (F.A Mackenzie). Japan did many brutal and harsh things while colonizing Korea.
Imperialism is when another nation forcefully takes control of another nation. In the 19th and 20th
century, many European powers were trying to get colonies in countries in Africa and Asia. In order to
do so, they needed to imperialize countries. Japan was the first Asian nation to defeat western
countries trying to imperialize them. During the 1900 s, Japan ... Show more content on

Japanese farmers, but all land rentals were unofficial. In 1906, however, the Japanese were slowly
starting to take over the Korean government. That meant that they were changing laws as well. In
1906, all of the Korean landlords became tenant farmers overnight. Inversely, all the Japanese farmers
turned into landlords. This was due to the Japanese working in the government twisting the law so that
Japanese farmers were at a great advantage. After that, many Japanese farmers immigrated to Korea to
start farms. In 1908, the Japanese population in Korea was at 126,000. In 1911, after Japan had fully
taken control of Korea, the Japanese population in Korea was at 210,000. In 1910, Japan owned about
7 8% of all the fertile land in Korea. By 1916, it had grown to about 37%. On the other hand, Korean
farmers owned over 90% of fertile land and in the span of 6 years, it had dropped to 67% (Japan

Image As Presence In Blade Runner
The concept of image as presence refers to the concept that film can show the world as it truly is.
Directors can choose to project the idea of image as presence in multiple ways, through the subjective
viewpoints of the characters of the film, through an objective approach in which an omnipresent force
that dictates to us about the facts that exist. In contrast, image as text, operates on the understanding
that the world cannot be shown as it is, rather there is an understanding that what the viewer is seeing
comes from an interpretive perspective. This viewpoint expects the audience to make connections
between what they are seeing on the screen and other images that are already known. Making
connections is part of the way that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The result is that the dystopian future becomes a realistic possibility to the audience. This has two
effects, in the first it makes the events of the film more plausible. Technological development and the
creation of robotic life could eventually occur in our own reality. In this regard, the film is using
image as presence by setting up this believable world. However, in the second arena it makes the
audience reflect on the questions of urbanity and development that exist in our current paradigm, thus
inviting discussion about the way human and planning elements are being merged together in our own
technology driven world. These concepts are as relevant now as they were when the film was first
released two decades ago. The camera continually roves over this world creating spatial continuity
that implies that there is virtually no escape from this smoky, polluted, society. The landscape provides
a site for making metaphor about the socioeconomic divide that characterizes the Blade Runner
universe. The skyscrapers of the wealthy are clear symbols of how the poor are at the bottom of the

Rhetorical Analysis Of John F. Kennedy s Inaugural Speech
Peace is a state of mind that is pleasing to everyone. When John F. Kennedy gave his inaugural
speech, his main focus was bettering the lives of all. He wanted everyone to be peaceful with one
another so that the world can be filled with altruism. Kennedy uses rhetorics, which is the art of well
developed speech, in his inaugural address. In JFK s Inaugural Speech, Kennedy claims that peace
needs to be achieved worldwide using logical appeal, ethical appeal, and word choice. One way
Kennedy states that the world needs to be peaceful is by using logical appeal. The first example of this
is when he says, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace,
before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or
accidental self destruction (7 8). It is clear that if each country is not careful with their nuclear
weapons, they could easily destroy the world; however, the author presents a better choice: if
everyone in the world become peaceful with one another, then there would not be the need to keep or
create more nuclear. Reasonably, the audience will want to create and sustain peace with other
countries so that nuclear weapons are no longer made. Another example is when he says, Let both
sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us (8). It
would be more beneficial to everyone if humanity aimed to fix world wide problems than attempt to
fix problems that only affect a few parts of the world. In order to fix the bigger problems, each country
must not be factious and work on creating peace to benefit as many people as possible rather than just
their own country. The audience clearly recognizes the positive impact that world peace can have on
the world. All in all, using logical appeal, Kennedy is able to effectively convey to the reader the
importance of world peace.
Another way Kennedy states that worldwide peace needs to be acquired is through ethical appeal. He
starts off by saying, so let us begin anew remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of
weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof (8). He explains that being kind to one another is
not showing that weakness

Suffering In Sophocles Oedipus The King
From Greece to Rome and to Britain, the world s most renowned philosophers and literary writers
have tackled the concept of suffering. From Sophocles Oedipus the King, to the poetry written by
Jonathan Swift, John Donne and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, multiple literary scholars have
demonstrated suffering throughout the last couple centuries. Whether it may be sexual suffering as
seen in the work of John Donne s His Mistress Going to Bed, and Jonathan Swifts The Lady s
Dressing Room and A Beautiful Nymph Going to Bed, or the emotional, physical and psychological
suffering in Oedipus the King, literature s greatest authors have allowed audiences to experience a

The Lady s Dressing Room is the complete opposite of A Beautiful Nymph Going to Bed; in fact,
rather than taking a calmer and accepting approach towards women and their flaws as he did in A
Beautiful Nymph Going to Bed, Swift attacks women and takes on a more sexist and misogynistic
approach. Swift s poem is highly invasive as it chronicles the unwanted entry of Strephon, a young
man, into a Celia s dressing room; it is here that Strephon begins to suffer psychologically from what
he witnesses in fact, Swift states that he pity wretched Strephon blind, to all the charms of female kind
. Strephon does not literally go blind as Oedipus did in Oedipus the King but is psychologically
scarred by the horror that he witnesses when he is exposed to Celia s mess. Strephon is ultimately
disillusioned by the discovery of his beloved Celia s humanity and flesh and blood physicality. It is at
the moment that Strephon shouts Oh! Celia, Celia, Celia shits! (Lady s Dressing Room, 118), that
audience members are truly aware of Strephon s horror and suffering. Although some may feel pity for
Strephon, his suffering is quite humorous. After Strephon runs away from Celia s chamber, the reader
is reminded of how foolish his actions and reaction to his discovery of Celia s bodily functions were in
fact, they were

18th Amendment Failure
The 18th amendment made made the manufacture, sale, distribution, and consumption of alcohol
illegal. This amendment was a huge failure because it causes people to go behind the laws back and
drink illegally. There was a secret drinking establishment called speakeasies and there were also
people who provided alcohol illegally and they were called bootleggers. The act that enforced
prohibition was the volstead act.
Congress passes the Volstead Act over President Woodrow Wilson s veto. The Volstead Act provided
for the enforcement of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, also known as the Prohibition
Amendment. In 1933, the 21st Amendment to the Constitution was passed and ratified, repealing
prohibition. The Twenty first Amendment to the United States Constitution repealed the Eighteenth
Amendment to the United States Constitution, which had mandated nationwide Prohibition on alcohol
on January 16, 1919. The Twenty first Amendment was ratified on December 5, 1933. ... Show more

Congress provided states with a period of seven years in which to ratify the amendment, the approval
took just over a year. The government now found itself with a bigger problem than prohibition of
alcoholic beverages. As the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and police worked to control and
end mob (organized crime) violence, and as the country suffered through the early years of the Great
Depression, lawmakers in Washington reconsidered the amendment. On February 20, 1933, the U.S.
Congress proposed that the Eighteenth Amendment be repealed. Approved by the states in December
of that year, the Twenty First Amendment declared the Eighteenth Amendment null. The manufacture,
transportation, and consumption of alcoholic beverages was again legal in the United States; this
ended the 13 year period of Prohibition. Franklin D Roosevelt, president at the time of repeal, called
Prohibition a noble

piece.
I believe that Captain Nemo s outlook on the world and mankind is based off of hatred. I say this
because he believes that the world must be his even though he did not create it, he wants to destroy it
if he can not make it his own. Nemo is showed to be a private character, this makes it more hard for

Essay about Pray the Devil Back to Hell
Pray the Devil Back to Hell.
Recently we watched Pray the Devil Back to Hell in English class. A few of the social issues
addressed were: poverty, peace and women s rights. The women were so fed up with how their
president has been treating everyone. He got young children to run around with guns and hurt innocent
people. Everyone was so below poverty that children were starving to death and there was nothing the
parents could do because they themselves were starving. The women wanted so badly to have peace to
stop the war, the fighting, and the poverty. The women just wanted a say in what was happening
around them, to get a chance to stop it all. Prior to watching this movie I didn t know how badly the

things to change for the better. In my future I will use this movie as a motivation tool and as a way to
remind myself that even though times are hard they will get better you just have to hold on. Also in the
future I will use this movie to show that anything is possible if you have help from those you love and
believe in. Overall I thought this was a really good movie. I thought it taught you a lot about diversity,
women s rights, poverty and peace. The movie was a very touching and inspiring movie; there is also
a lot of emotion due to what they had to deal with on an everyday basis. To me the movie and their

The Effects Of Obesity On The United States
An epidemic is happening in the United States of America; obesity is on the rise. The United States is
currently is second in the world s most obese countries with more than two thirds of adults being
overweight ( Overweight and Obesity Statistics ). Countermeasures to promote a healthier living style
are on the rise, also. For instance, Michelle Obama s Let s Move program promotes eating healthy
food and increasing exercise. The NFL promotes sixty minutes of play for children each day to
promote healthier living and establishing an active lifestyle. However, the one area of healthy living
promotion is lacking and that is food information. The United States must change their source of food
information; the food label must be changed. Currently the food label is inaccurate, loose in
regulations, and hard to read. By changing the food label to an easier, clearer, and more accessible
source of information, then the American public will have easier access to information. Furthermore,
the American public will have an easier time choosing healthier options towards food. First off, in
order to revise the food label, we need to understand how it is supposed to work. The food label was
develop, and is currently regulated by the Food and Drug Administration since 1993 (Rosso
Grossman, Food Labels ). The food label is currently has four requirements. The first is the principal

Differences And Contrastive Grammar
Contrastive analysis means finding the similarity and comparing the differences of linguistic system of

where the similarity and difference of two or more than two languages are the main focus. However
contrastive grammar refers to the more specific thing that is on the structural concepts of sentences
such as sentence patterns, and connecting words. On other words, contrastive grammar is a study that

The Theory Of Plate Tectonics
Plate Tectonics The theory of plate tectonics has been explored throughout history because of
similarities in coastal boundaries and other evidence found such as fossil records, geometric fit,
mountain episodes, the paleoclimate observed, information about the ocean floor, ancient magnetism,
distribution of volcanoes and earthquakes and heat flow from the earths core. There were early
theories from Wegner s continental drift which lacked an explanation for the mechanism that drove the
continents apart, to Wilson s more complete theory of the cyclical opening and closing of the ocean
basins due to movement of the earth s plates. The theory explains how today s continents were once a
large supercontinent that slowly drifted to their present positions and will again form one giant
continent via collision.
According to the Natego film Colliding Continents, the landmasses are liable to drift back to each
other through plate tectonic activity. One of the few places on Earth where one can see continents
being pushed apart is in Iceland, where the mid Atlantic ridge in shows above the surface and shows
how oceanic crust is made, the ridge in Iceland is almost three miles wide on one side you have the
Eurasian plate and the other is the American plate. This rifts grows forming new rock and causes the
continents further apart widening the Atlantic Ocean moving about an inch a year. The theory suggests
that we go through cycles of dispersion and collision over a 100 million year

The Historiography Of Genevieve
Most of what we know of Genevieve comes from her hagiography. Although this is resourceful, it
leaves us with limited historical documentation beyond the miracles and saintly duties she performed.
What we do know is that Genevieve was born during or shortly after the year 420 in Nanterre, which
is near Paris. Her parents, Severus (of Frankish origins) and Gerontia (of Germanic Roman origins)
were both peasants within the community. When Saint Germanus traveled through Nanterre on his
way to Britain, he encountered Genevieve. It is told that Genevieve desired to dedicate her life to
Christianity, but historical documentation notes that Saint Germanus prophesied Genevieve s miracle
abilities and persuaded her to become consecrated. Upon the death of her parents, she moved ... Show

Genevieve prophesied that if people fled the city, they would be ravaged and murdered. Instead, she
encouraged all matrons to pray with her while their husbands fought. This again enraged the Parisian
leaders, but Saint Germanus interceded by offering up consecrated Eucharistic loaves. After the siege
of Paris, Genevieve continued performing miracles and also exorcisms. In 480, Paris was besieged by
the Franks. Genevieve bravely led her matrons with a fleet of boats on the Seine River to supply
trapped citizens with grain and nourishment. Genevieve died around the year 500 at the age of 82.
During her lifetime, she was known as caretaker for the poor and sick. This role is similar to other
saints of her times. After her death, her hagiography praises her miracle abilities since the shrine of her
burial becomes a site for miracles of healings. Genevieve was soon sainted as the protector of Paris
and her name is continually invoked to this day as a provider of healing and guardianship. Author Lisa
Bitel notes how the work of Genevieve helped build Christianity within barbarian Europe by way of

The Myth Behind the Singing and Chirping of Birds
Since the beginning of time, people have always wondered why birds sing and chirp. The answer lies
in The Legend of the Birds. Here is how it goes... Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a
tree that reached to the heavens. Inside this tree there lived all the birds in the world of different
breeds, color, shapes, and sizes. Now each bird lived peacefully in the tree speaking the language that
humans do today. The flock of the birds included laws about obeying the rules, how to act, and the
most important rule, which was to never travel to the land of the Pandas, Pandaria. There was a bird
by the name of Duck who loathed these rules because he thought it was unfair to not be able to travel
to the land of the Pandas. After all, what would a panda do to them? So it all started when Duck broke
the law of the birds. Duck had always been curious what is at the land of the Pandas. He decided the
rule of the birds was dumb and decided to go and check out the Panda s place. So Duck flew a long
way from his home until he finally reached a large area filled with bamboo. The large pointed bamboo
made Duck uncertain for a little while, but then he decided he wasn t about to chicken out and flew
right in. Right on time, Duck noticed some Panda maidens and sneakily flew over them without being
seen. Out of the corner of his eye, Duck noticed a grand room guarded by many Panda warriors. He
decided to check it out without making any noise; he flew right over the warriors

Mononucleosis Research Papers
Emma Johnston Ms. Phelps Health Period 5 October 12, 2016 Mononucleosis Infectious
Mononucleosis, commonly known as mono, is an infectious disease caused by the Epstein Barr virus
(EBV). The EBV virus causes an increase in lymphocytes (large white blood cells) in the blood stream
due to viral infection. Although scientists are not certain when the first case of mono occurred, the
most accurate record was written in 1889 by Dr. E. Pfeiffer. The term Infectious Mononucleosis was
first introduced in 1920 by British researchers Thomas P. Sprunt and Frank A. Evans in replace of its
original term Glandular Fever. By 1964, the Epstein Barr virus was successfully identified and named
by doctors M. Anthony Epstein and Ms. Yvonne Barr. Mono s nickname The Kissing Disease comes
from its ability to transfer by human contact with saliva. This, however, is not particular to just
kissing. Mono can be transferred through anything that has touched the saliva of anyone infected by it.
Things such as sharing chapstick or lipstick, straws, utensils, or cups can transmit the virus. Even
sneezing or coughing in a close radius can transmit the disease via droplet. Mono is most common in
people ages 15 25, and is at it s prime during high school years. Cases of ... Show more content on

counter as pain relievers and fever reducers. Mono symptoms usually die down at around 1 4 weeks,
but the person may still be infected with the EBV virus for up to two months. However, there is a
small percentage of people whose immune systems are unable to completely fight off mono. As a
result, some people may develop CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) due to the EBV

What About Casinos Based On Reservations
What about casinos based on reservations? There are many arguments against these as well. That the
increase of tourism to these casinos will harm the community, through crime rates, and increased
illegal activity. They state that the funds stay in the pockets of those associated with the casino, and
that the community does not see a benefit, only suffers from the casino activity. But dismissing the
idea of a casino on reservations over assumptions is unfair to the Native people, as they assumptions
normally ignore the benefits of the reservation casino. Branch Conway (Bailey Chase) from the A E

Also, the development of casinos are drawing people back, people that are talented in business
management, economics, and other business skills. With these casinos, these type of people are highly
sought after, and are able to return because of the financial gain these individuals can gain for
themselves and their families. One might say that the casinos on reservations are only putting money
in the pockets of certain individuals, that enough money is not generated to help the community. Well,
take a look at the Mashantucket Pequot s from Connecticut. In 1992, the Pequot s struck a deal...
(paying) 25% of gross revenues on slot machine(s) to have slots in its...casino, as long as they paid at
least $80 million per year for the privilege of having slots. These large payments prevented the state
from granting a license for a proposed non Indian casino in the Bridgeport area. In the fiscal year
2002, payments to the state are estimated in excess of $350 million (Evans, 10). At 25%, that means
that the casino has generated 1.4 billion in revenue; on slots alone. That s a lot of money to be poured
back into the community, as the casino regularly sponsors local activities in the community. According
to the Indigenous Policy Journal, In 2006, Indian gaming generated net revenues exceeding $25
billion, with evidence suggesting the investment of gaming dollars into a broad array of social,
economic, and governmental programs (Conner, 1). These

Analysis Of Shirley Jackson s Flower Garden
Known for her psychological thrillers, Shirley Jackson has always been able to get into the mind of
the reader and force them to think of the deeper meaning behind her stories. However, it is always
brought to question if her best selling works were a result of her poor mental health. Growing up,
Jackson had always felt like an outsider; dealing with a cruel mother and other children her age only
fueled her isolation later in life. As a way to record her feelings and thoughts, Jackson began writing
stories and including herself in ways through the characters. While Shirley Jackson s earlier stories are
often about people being oppressed and persecuted by closed minded communities, in her later work
she focussed increasingly on the demon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She used her writing as a way to accuse real neighborhoods of this persecution and prejudice that was
happening within their communities. Those outside factors led to the downfall of her characters
opposed to other works where her character s downfall was themselves.
Another work that accounts for this change is The Lottery , one of her most famous pieces. The
Lottery is an early and extremely famous controversial work of Shirley Jackson s. This book once
again deals with problems within a community. Every year, the townspeople pull little slips of paper in
a box and each family living in the town draws out a slip. The family that draws the slip marked with
a black dot joins the orchestrator of the lottery on stage. Then each member of the family draws again
and the one who picks the one with the black dot this time is stoned to death. All of the villagers
contribute to the stoning, even the children and family members of whom is being killed. The
townspeople judge and persecute members of their society willingly without another thought about it.
Shirley Jackson used this short story to help the readers understand the oppression and persecution of
others at the time. While Shirley Jackson s mental health was never quite normal, she was able to
focus more on current events going on in the outside world much more than later in her life.

In this paper, we focus the Flow Control for traceback that will minimize the amount of packets
required for build up the attack path. Flow control based mechanism merged with Uniform
Probabilistic Packet Marking (UPPM), the stream of packets can be controlled that suggests the
amount of packets checked by UPPM will get reduce there by decreasing the convergence time. Then
again, this strategy should bring about full traceback on an attacker. Keywords:
Ip traceback, Network Security, Packet Marking, Autonomous System, Convergence Time
Introduction
IP traceback suggests the capacity of perceiving the genuine wellspring of any packet sent over the
Internet. By virtue of the shortcoming of the first blueprint of the Internet, we will be not able to find
the genuine developers at present. To be completely frank, IP traceback arrangements are seen as
productive if they can perceive the zombies from which the DDoS attack packets entered the Internet.
Various techniques to tracebak the start of the attack including link testing, controlled flooding, ICMP
traceback and different packet marking methodologies. Packet marking techniques are used as a piece
of this paper. Packet marking means

Essay on The Effects of Immigration In The U.S. Economy
Introduction
Throughout history, countless millions of people left their native land and moved to a strange country
where no one knows what kind of faith lies ahead for them. The heaviest immigration worldwide took
place from the early 1800 s to the Great Depression. Most of the immigrants came from Europe and
half of them immigrated to the United States. Whatever prompted the immigrants, they were brave,
bold, and courageous men and women. They left familiar communities for a new land and a new
people.
The Four Waves of Immigrants
The United States has always been a nation of immigrants. English, Dutch, and French men and
women settled it in its earliest days, the first decade of the seventeenth century. Groups from other ...

Some colonists came from Denmark, Finland, and what is now Ukraine. Some colonists sought
adventure in America. Others fled religious persecutions. Many are convicts transported from English
jails. But most immigrants by far hoped for economic opportunity. Many could not afford to come to
America and came as indentured servants. Such a servant signed a contract to work for a master for
four to seven years to repay the cost of the ticket. Blacks from West Africa came to the colonies
involuntarily. The first Africans were brought as indentured servants, but most blacks arrived as
slaves. West African blacks captured most of the slaves in wars and traded them for European goods.
Wars in Europe and America slowed immigration during the late 1700 s and early 1800 s. Newcomers
included Irish fleeing English rule and French escaping revolution. Congress made it illegal to bring in
slaves as of 1808. From 1830 through 1874 several states passed their own immigration laws, since
the federal government did not regulate immigration in any way until 18754. During the early 1800 s,
New York City began to replace Philadelphia as the nation s chief port of entry for immigrants. The
country s first immigration station, Castle Garden, opened in New York City in 1855. Ellis Island the
world s most famous station, operated in New York Harbor from 1892 to 19543.

The Pros And Cons Of Cybervoyants
It is no big shocker that over the years the subject of clairvoyant powers has been a target of theory,
mystery, fear, and even superstition. Those who cannot understand a thing tend to fear a thing, and it is
no surprise because clairvoyants have an uncanny gift to see beyond, into places that most other
people cannot. This is why it is a source of such controversy and even jealousy at times.
Clairvoyance refers to the ability to see events, people or objects which are otherwise not visible
through the ordinary five senses of man. Clairvoyants thus have a second sight, another vision which
lets them see beyond the physical universe. This second sight facilitates visualizing events of the
present, future as well as past, commonly known as retrocognition. ... Show more content on

Everyone has the ability at birth to become clairvoyant, but they must be willing to develop the
powers they possess.
If you are ready to tap into your source of power and develop your clairvoyant abilities you need to
clear your psyche. The best way to accomplish this is with meditation.
This helps in getting rid of the negative energies that haunt you. When those negative energies are out
of the way you should have no trouble seeing everything with crystal clarity.
Using normal meditation, you ll gain the ability to feel as well as sense the strength within, and grasp
your real potential. If you learn to mediate and get rid of that stress you will see yourself being much
happier, as well as a lot more creative.
Your meditation sessions should occur every day for at least 30 minutes at a time. It is important to
choose a quiet place that has no distractions. Also, take care to choose a place that is free from
negative energy. Some who are learning to open up to their potential may choose to meditate outside,
allowing nature and the universe to help them release those negative

Sociological Perspective On Death And Dying
The discourses about death and dying scattered across the various sciences. The fundamental purpose

During World War I the military utilized American Indian language to have a secure code. This
allowed for secure communications while conduction operations throughout Europe. Prior to the onset
of World War II Adolph Hitler and the Japanese sent students to the United States to study Indian
languages to break the unbreakable code; this lead to the development of a new language utilizing the
Navajo language. Those who served their country were known as the Code Talkers.
The first 29 recruits were sent to military training in San Diego CA in May of 1942. Following the

translated, transmitted and retranslated a test message in two and a half minutes. Without using the
Navajo code, it could take hours for a soldier to complete the same task. (CIA, 2008) With the success
of this test Navajos begin to be deployed in every major operation in the Pacific theater.
Major Howard Connor, who was the signal officer of the Navajos at Iwo Jima, said, Were it not for the
Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima. (CIA, 2008) Japanese were skilled at
breaking codes developed by the Army and Air Corp but failed to break the code utilized by the
Marines and the Navajo Code Talkers. The code was so complex and detailed that you had to be

The Japanese took a non code trained Navajo soldier captive while serving in Japan. As a POW he

was unable to decipher the code and give the Japanese the means to decipher it. After his release he

He frequently uses the term hieroglyph as a way to represent something visually and without words, as
the Egyptians did with hieroglyphs. Artaud seems to prefer the strict rules of Balinese theatre to the
relative freedom of European/Occidental theatre. Of this idea of pure theatre, which is merely
theoretical in the Occident and to which no one has ever attempted to give the least reality, the
Balinese off us a stupefying realization, suppressing all possibility of recourse to words for the
elucidation of the most abstract themes inventing a language of gesture to be developed in space, a
language without meaning except in the circumstances of the stage (61). Oriental and Occidental
Theatre Here Artaud criticizes Occidental theatre for its dependence on the word and praises Oriental
theatre for its independence from it. Again, Oriental theatre is superior because of its use of imagery
and its metaphysical nature, whereas Occidental theatre is inferior because it is absorbed in
psychology and internal struggles. It is not a matter of suppressing speech in the theatre but of
changing its role, and especially of reducing its position, of considering it as something else than a
means of conducting human characters to their external ends, since the theatre is concerned only with
the way feelings and passions conflict with one another, and man with man, in life (72). No More

Semantics, Syntax, And Variation Of Language
When one takes an advanced grammar course, they are in for a new vision of learning and

they only recognize grammar for its functions in the written language and not the true meanings it has
on sentence structures and clauses. There are many views on the importance grammar usages.
Different Linguist has different theories. The two main grammar usages that are discussed are
Grammar Discourse and Cohesion. Linguistics is the study of the nature, structure, and variation of

124). Larger clauses that makeup of many sentences are considered linguistic items. Many books,
stories, poems, and even lectures include linguistic items. Many clauses in a story make up language
or utterances. Being able to distinguish the utterance in a lecture or story will help the listener identify
if the material is complete or incomplete. Texts consist of longer sentences that would make it hard for
the reader to clarify the subject in one sentence. Stages in narratives help the linguist point out the
events in the story. The stages breakdown the settings, events, and resolution of the narrative. The
structural scheme is identified, and all the stages of the narrative can be put into the correct order (
Test and Discourse, 2007, p. 7). Grammar and discourse can sometimes be two different types of
communication, but they can compliment each other. Mira Ariel described grammar and discourse as
Grammar specifies a set of language codes and guides speakers on how to properly construct
sentences, which are then conjoined by entirely different discourse principals into a coherent piece of
discourse (Ariel, 2009, p. 5). Not all texts are of equal value as some contains salient information that
brings the story to its climax. Salient text consists of main line verb clauses. Longacere calls this
method of discourse salient system.

Analysis Of The Poem The King Of Babylon
Have you ever wondered if you have a plan over your life or what your future holds?
It is important that we need to understand what the people of God were taught in the Old Testament
and what they went through. This can be taken and used in todays society and culture as we can look
at the New Testament and see the similarities of what they faced. In this essay I plan to show how the

One Chinese thinker, Zhang Weiying, formulated the idea of dual track pricing with introducing an
allegory, called the village of zebras . In the story of the allegory, elders in a village argued endlessly
that their village s horses were better than the neighboring zebras. However, they found out that the
zebras were actually superior to their horses. Realizing the reality, the elders confronted and worried
about one problem; their villagers were too accustomed to the horses, resulting from the previous
elders argument, so that embracing the zebras would be difficult for them. Hence, the elders created a
plan; they painted their horses with strips every night while other villagers were sleeping. When
villagers found out and shocked about the zebras, the elders assured that those zebras were actually
their own horses that were painted with stripes. Finally, all the villagers became accustomed with the
zebras; the replacement was successful. By implying this allegory, Weiying argued that dual track
pricing would help to promote China s economic growth without implementing new idea suddenly.
Dual track pricing is an idea that publishes market prices and state controlled prices simultaneously.
Increasing the ratio of the market prices, the state controlled prices could be replaced. Accordingly,
most Chinese thinkers advocated that the gradual change would work more appropriately and

The Dream Argument by Rene Descartes Essay
One of Rene Descartes s most famous arguments, from his not only from his first meditation but all of
the meditations, is his Dream Argument. Descartes believes that there is no way to be able to
distinguish being in awake from being in a state of dreaming. In fact you could actually be in a dream
right now. Rene Descartes s theory that one is unable distinguish being awake from dreaming, as
interesting as it is, can be at times a little farfetched, along with a few contradictions to himself,
Descartes s dream argument does not entitle himself to any sort of claim.

It is deception from the sense that causes this mistrust for Descartes and brings forth the Dream
Argument. The human senses as well feel very real, just as they do in reality, and this is one of the first
things that have Descartes question the differences between being awake and dream. Due to the trust
issues it he becomes unsure of whether he is dreaming or not. When it comes to dreaming Descartes
thinks that there could possibility that some certain God that may have easily deceived him in falsely
believing in things could appear to be correct but are not. However Descartes says that it God is
described as a supremely good being (Descartes, 21). God has always been a being that is worshiped
and why would so many people worship an evil God if he brings no positives to their lives. Descartes
however is not 100 percent positive on whether God is being deceptive or not being deceptive. James
Hill says that [the] key move that Descartes then makes is to highlight the lack of insight one has into
one s condition when dreaming. It is this lack of insight, and Descartes way of interpreting it, which
forms the backbone of the dreaming argument (Hill, 2). To shorten that down, the minimal
explanations to why and how dreams occur is the foundation for Descartes s Dream Argument.
The main idea of Descartes is that there is no difference between being awake and dreaming.
Descartes says there are no definite signs to differ dreaming from being awake. You could be possibly

A Leader Who Doesn t Have Knowledge Of The Best Person As...
Leadership is a term on which no one can reach a consensus as it carries a different meaning and
weightage for each individual. Some people may consider a person as their leader who is capable of
taking them away from hardships or caring for them, or some people may consider a man steeped in
wisdom and learning to be a leader. Difference notwithstanding, there still seems to be some
commonality in all the perspectives behind the definition, which is related to choosing a best of the
best person as their leader. The simple bottom line is that, nobody wants to have a person as his leader
who doesn t have knowledge of the needs and aspirations of his people or who is not blessed with a
certain temperament foe bearing hardships for his people, nor a vision for where they should be or
how they should grow and influence the world around them.
As the founder of tech startup, it is only natural for me to pick a leader who is a true technological
visionary. It was not enough to simply pick someone who created innovative products, or created and
ran a billion dollar company. For me it would have to be someone with the vision to shape the future
and world around him, a person who could see how his works would directly impact the trajectory of
the world and its impact on the human race at large. A true visionary. Therefore, for the purpose of this

To answer that question, Durant did not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite his stellar perimeter defense, the Warriors needed Thompson to find his shot again and give
them an extra offensive boost in Game 2.
Thompson did just that as he pitched in with 22 points and seven rebounds, plus knocked down 4 of 7
from three point range. Give Thompson credit though, he is an outstanding shooter and when you are
a shooter like him, you need to have a short memory.
A missed shot will not make or break you. Thompson was knocking down shots inside the arc, putting
the ball on the floor, and dialing it up from distance.
The Warriors will need him to continue to shoot the ball like he did on Sunday night, especially if they
want to win Game 3 on Tuesday night and take a commanding 3 0 series lead.
3. LeBron James is still the greatest player in the world but he cannot do it all
Once again in the NBA Finals, LeBron James gave us another special performance. As I mentioned
earlier, James posted his eighth NBA Finals triple double consisting of 29 points, 14 rebounds, and 11
assists, but it was not enough.
Early in the game, James was playing like a man possessed. He was controlling the tempo, attacking
the basket with force and tenacity, while also getting his teammates involved. He also threw down a
powerful dunk on Andre Iguodala, who was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
However, James teammates could not reciprocate the favor and help him out. Just like in Game 1, J.R.
Smith, who

Expectations Great Expectations
The Victorian era was an era of social change; the idea that one is not predestined to the social class
one was born into became an ideology for the lower classes (House 575). Becoming a gentleman was
the goal. The fascination of being a gentleman did not escape Dickens who came to age when the
gentleman allure was most prominent (Gilmour 577). As much as he was effected by the abstract
notion of how middle and lower middle classes perceived gentlemen, he also noticed his surrounding s
moral values changing (House 573). Being a gentleman in Victorian Britain meant valuing rank over
humanity, and the story of Pip s rise to fortune in Great Expectations mirrors those values. While
simultaneously expressing the reservations Dickens had to these social values. Dickens was in many
ways a writer for and, probably most importantly, about the people. Which is why ... Show more

First and foremost, he needs to be in possession of money. Pip concludes at a young age that in order
to stop being common (Dickens 71) he needs to have money and even believes that Miss Havisham
will one day be his benefactor enabling him to escape his dreadfully common state (133). Secondly,
one needed to have the general appearance of a gentleman which meant proper attire, manner and
articulation. When Pip comes into handsome property he is advised by Mr. Jaggers to improve his
attire before arriving in London to better suit the look of a gentleman and to not have working clothes
(141). Thirdly, being a gentleman meant moving in the right circles. Pip needed to move to London in
order to achieve his gentlemanly status and thus had to give up his position working alongside Joe.
Lastly, education seemed vital, as after Pip s visit to the Satis House he wants Biddy to educate him so
that he is less ignorant in Estella s company (73). From the start the reader does not get the idea that
being a gentleman entails compassion or morality, rather it mostly consists of material

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Trade Barriers
Trade barriers can be defined as any measures that government or public authorities give to restrict on
the flow goods or services. Trade barriers were needed to reduce competitiveness between domestic
goods and services with imported goods and services. But not everything that restricted or prevented
is trade barriers, such as linguistic difference. There are many forms of trade barriers; the most
common are tariff and non tariff barriers. Tariff barriers on trade are tax that was imposed by the
government on imported and/or exported goods and services, such as custom duties. Meanwhile,
according to Cleins C. Coughlin, a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, non
tariff barriers on trade are non tax measures imposed by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These purposes might be beneficial in the short run because it will encourage economic growth.
Without trade barriers, workers from other countries can easily enter the country and resulting in the
increase of unemployment. For example before ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) was placed,
ASEAN member labor forces cannot enter Indonesia territory easily. But with this AEC, Indonesia
workers was threatened because the foreigner might have a higher competence than Indonesia own
workers and this may lead Indonesia labor to lose their job and thus, increasing unemployment. But in
a long run, when trade barriers continue, trade barriers will hurt national economy. One problem that
emerges from trade barriers is rent seeking. When local industries tried to lobby the government to
give them subsidies or increasing tariff rates to gain more profit, there are no additional value added to
the total output thus, there will be wasted resources used for lobbying. This is one example of the
inefficiency of trade

Plague In Catherine In pages eight to eighty three, Jane Austen interests the reader in Catherine by either making the reader feel supportive of Catherine or ,mostly, making the reader feel superior to Catherine when they find her behaviour endearing or annoying. Jane Austen achieves this by showing how much Catherine worries for her relationships with the Tilneys, especially after a horrible incident with the Thorpe family and by using strong language for her character. Also, Jane Austen interests the reader in Catherine by mocking the behaviour of Gothic romance novel heroines by using Catherine s personality and behaviour as a parody of that. Jane Austen interests us in Catherine by showing the reader that Catherine s worries about her relationship with the Tilney s can easily be forgotten when she watches a simple comedy play. This makes the reader feel superior to Catherine as we know her worries are not as strong as she thinks they are, the reader knows this because Catherine can easily be distracted from her worries. The verb to suspend means to temporarily prevent from continuing. Normally, the verb to suspend is used when students are prohibited from coming to school as the result of breaking a school rule. Usage of the verb suspended in this context makes the worries that Catherine had seem mandatory, almost as if they were a rule. By making Catherine s worries about her relationships with the Tilneys seem as if they are a rule that must be followed interest the reader in Catherine as she behaving like a heroine in a Gothic romance novel who worries all the time about petty matters. Strength of the Human Spirit Revealed in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich Life can be incredibly hard at times; nearly everyone encounters a period of time when circumstances become unbearably difficult. Imagine being assigned to ten years of unceasing and tremendous hardships, as is the plight of the protagonist in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. This book describes in detail only one day of Ivan s ten year sentence in a Russian work camp in the 1950 s. Ivan and his gang know that the men in the other gangs are just as weak as they are; no other gang receives any more food rations, or more clothing than they do. Regardless, the gang boss plans to palm the job off on some other gang (4). In a struggle for survival, nearly all human beings will gladly pawn their pain and hardships off onto other, struggling human beings. Therefore, Ivan and his gang act only as any other humans would act in such a situation. The symbolism is apparent when it is understood that humans, even those who are not in such extreme positions of survival as a Russian work camp, act in this manner. Ivan and his gang, in their time of desperate struggle, reflect the actions of average human beings in simple, day to day struggles. Ivan, at this point, has lived in the camp for eight years. Impact Of Imperialism In Korea Japanese Imperialism in Korea and Korea s Police/Military Era As I stood on a mountain pass, looking down on the valley leading to Inch Con, I recalled these words of my friend. The Ôstrong hand of Japan was certainly being shown here. I beheld in front of me village after village reduced to ashes. Destruction, thorough and complete, had fallen upon it. Not a single house was left, and not a single wall of a house. (F.A Mackenzie). Japan did many brutal and harsh things while colonizing Korea. Imperialism is when another nation forcefully takes control of another nation. In the 19th and 20th century, many European powers were trying to get colonies in countries in Africa and Asia. In contrast, image as text, operates on the understanding that the world cannot be shown as it is, rather there is an understanding that what the viewer is seeing comes from an interpretive perspective. • 7. Rhetorical Analysis Of John F. Kennedy s Inaugural Speech Peace is a state of mind that is pleasing to everyone. When John F. Kennedy gave his inaugural speech, his main focus was bettering the lives of all. He wanted everyone to be peaceful with one another so that the world can be filled with altruism. Kennedy uses rhetorics, which is the art of well developed speech, in his inaugural address. In JFK s Inaugural Speech, Kennedy claims that peace needs to be achieved worldwide using logical appeal, ethical appeal, and word choice. One way Kennedy states that the world needs to be peaceful is by using logical appeal. The first example of this is when he says, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self destruction (7 8). It is clear that if each country is not careful with their nuclear weapons, they could easily destroy the world; however, the author presents a better choice: if everyone in the world become peaceful with one another, then there would not be the need to keep or create more nuclear. Reasonably, the audience will want to create and sustain peace with other countries so that nuclear weapons are no longer made. Another example is when he says, Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us (8). It would be more beneficial to everyone if humanity aimed to fix world wide problems than attempt to fix problems that only affect a few parts of the world. In order to fix the bigger problems, each country must not be factious and work on creating peace to benefit as many people as possible rather than just their own country. The audience clearly recognizes the positive impact that world peace can have on the world. All in all, using logical appeal, Kennedy is able to effectively convey to the reader the importance of world peace. Another way Kennedy states that worldwide peace needs to be acquired is through ethical appeal. He starts off by saying, so let us begin anew remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof (8). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Lady s Dressing Room is the complete opposite of A Beautiful Nymph Going to Bed; in fact, rather than taking a calmer and accepting approach towards women and their flaws as he did in A Beautiful Nymph Going to Bed, Swift attacks women and takes on a more sexist and misogynistic approach. Swift s poem is highly invasive as it chronicles the unwanted entry of Strephon, a young man, into a Celia s dressing room; it is here that Strephon begins to suffer psychologically from what he witnesses in fact, Swift states that he pity wretched Strephon blind, to all the charms of female kind . Strephon does not literally go blind as Oedipus did in Oedipus the King but is psychologically scarred by the horror that he witnesses when he is exposed to Celia s mess. Strephon is ultimately disillusioned by the discovery of his beloved Celia s humanity and flesh and blood physicality. It is at the moment that Strephon shouts Oh! Celia, Celia, Celia shits! There were early theories from Wegner s continental drift which lacked an explanation for the mechanism that drove the continents apart, to Wilson s more complete theory of the cyclical opening and closing of the ocean basins due to movement of the earth s plates. The theory explains how today s continents were once a large supercontinent that slowly drifted to their present positions and will again form one giant continent via collision. According to the Natego film Colliding Continents, the landmasses are liable to drift back to each other through plate tectonic activity. One of the few places on Earth where one can see continents being pushed apart is in Iceland, where the mid Atlantic ridge in shows above the surface and shows how oceanic crust is made, the ridge in Iceland is almost three miles wide on one side you have the Eurasian plate and the other is the American plate. Inside this tree there lived all the birds in the world of different breeds, color, shapes, and sizes. Now each bird lived peacefully in the tree speaking the language that humans do today. Mononucleosis Research Papers Emma Johnston Ms. Phelps Health Period 5 October 12, 2016 Mononucleosis Infectious Mononucleosis, commonly known as mono, is an infectious disease caused by the Epstein Barr virus (EBV). The EBV virus causes an increase in lymphocytes (large white blood cells) in the blood stream due to viral infection. Although scientists are not certain when the first case of mono occurred, the most accurate record was written in 1889 by Dr. E. Pfeiffer. The term Infectious Mononucleosis was first introduced in 1920 by British researchers Thomas P. Sprunt and Frank A. Evans in replace of its original term Glandular Fever. By 1964, the Epstein Barr virus was successfully identified and named by doctors M. Anthony Epstein and Ms. Yvonne Barr. Mono s nickname The Kissing Disease comes from its ability to transfer by human contact with saliva. This, however, is not particular to just kissing. Mono can be transferred through anything that has touched the saliva of anyone infected by it. Things such as sharing chapstick or lipstick, straws, utensils, or cups can transmit the virus. Essay on The Effects of Immigration In The U.S. Economy Introduction Throughout history, countless millions of people left their native land and moved to a strange country where no one knows what kind of faith lies ahead for them. The heaviest immigration worldwide took place from the early 1800 s to the Great Depression. Most of the immigrants came from Europe and half of them immigrated to the United States. Whatever prompted the immigrants, they were brave, bold, and courageous men and women. They left familiar communities for a new land and a new people. But most immigrants by far hoped for economic opportunity. Many could not afford to come to America and came as indentured servants. Such a servant signed a contract to work for a master for four to seven years to repay the cost of the ticket. Blacks from West Africa came to the colonies involuntarily. The first Africans were brought as indentured servants, but most blacks arrived as slaves. West African blacks captured most of the slaves in wars and traded them for European goods. Wars in Europe and America slowed immigration during the late 1700 s and early 1800 s. Newcomers included Irish fleeing English rule and French escaping revolution. Congress made it illegal to bring in slaves as of 1808. From 1830 through 1874 several states passed their own immigration laws, since the federal government did not regulate immigration in any way until 18754. During the early 1800 s, New York City began to replace Philadelphia as the nation s chief port of entry for immigrants. The country s first immigration station, Castle Garden, opened in New York City in 1855. Ellis Island the world s most famous station, operated in New York Harbor from 1892 to 19543. Those who cannot understand a thing tend to fear a thing, and it is no surprise because clairvoyants have an uncanny gift to see beyond, into places that most other people cannot. This is why it is a source of such controversy and even jealousy at times. Clairvoyance refers to the ability to see events, people or objects which are otherwise not visible through the ordinary five senses of man. In the story of the allegory, elders in a village argued endlessly that their village s horses were better than the neighboring zebras. However, they found out that the zebras were actually superior to their horses. Realizing the reality, the elders confronted and worried about one problem; their villagers were too accustomed to the horses, resulting from the previous elders argument, so that embracing the zebras would be difficult for them. Due to the trust issues it he becomes unsure of whether he is dreaming or not. When it comes to dreaming Descartes thinks that there could possibility that some certain God that may have easily deceived him in falsely believing in things could appear to be correct but are not. Some people may consider a person as their leader who is capable of taking them away from hardships or caring for them, or some people may consider a man steeped in wisdom and learning to be a leader. Difference notwithstanding, there still seems to be some commonality in all the perspectives behind the definition, which is related to choosing a best of the best person as their leader. The simple bottom line is that, nobody wants to have a person as his leader who doesn t have knowledge of the needs and aspirations of his people or who is not blessed with a certain temperament foe bearing hardships for his people, nor a vision for where they should be or how they should grow and influence the world around them.
