Cultural Anthropology Essay
Cultural Anthropology
Almost all cultures world wide have highly developed traditions of music and dance. According to
Mari Womack, author of Being Human: An Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, music and dance
carry much importance within a culture. As do other artistic forms, music and dance reflect cultural
and social organization. Cultural values can be conveyed in the words of a song, and the performance
of a song or a dance is dependent on the social context (Womack 226). Music and instruments are of
great significance in many places world wide. For example, the BaMbuti foragers from Africa s Ituri
rain forest have an instrument which they call the molimo which looks like an extremely long pipe.
The men of the BaMbuti ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When done correctly, it looks like an advanced version of the wave. These are fine examples of
Marching Band as the art of music and dance.
Marching Band is, in most high schools, on the fringes of society. Those instrument toting kids spend
countless hours fine tuning their skills, only to receive little respect from the rest of the students. They
are called band nerds. They are laughed at. And yet they persist. But why? Why not give into the
mainstream high school culture and join football or cheer leading? Why spend countless hours playing
and replaying their parts until their fingers are worn to the bone when they could be watching movies,
going on dates, and eating pizza? These were my questions based on my limited knowledge of high
school marching bands. So, I decided to use my budding role as anthropologist to find out.
My first step was to select a marching band to study. Luckily, the local high school, Goshen High
School, has an excellent marching band which has competed at the state level for the last decade. A
friend of mine at Goshen College who was a member of the band helped me to contact a current
member of the band who could assist me by being my informant. For my informant, I chose a student,
Jordan, who is currently involved in the band as a section leader, but has been in several other roles as
well. Jordan also has been involved in the Marching Band for all of his four years of high

Job Analysis at Comptech Essay
What are the current job specifications for the store manager job? Based on the information you have
(or could have), how would you assess the validity of these specifications? What approaches would
you use? The current job specifications for the store manager position that is required, by most district
managers, at CompTech is that the candidate being considered should have a MBA or at minimum
three years experience as store manager. CompTech s strategic objective is to meet customer

They also state that by having long tenured employees you increase the employee knowledge base, as
longer tenured employees naturally know more about the company that shorter tenured employees

would require changing the requirements to reflect someone that may not have a MBA or someone
that does not have three years of prior supervisory experience. Another suggestion that may work well,
I know it has for my organization, it to develop a Management Trainee Program. Some of the current
weaknesses that CompTech currently possess is having such a high number of vacancies and they
have pretty large amount of turnover. One of their major strengths is that they are willing to train their
store managers with a product they have come up with CompTech University (Bernardin, J.H., 2013.

Essay on Space Shuttle Ethics Case Study
One of the greatest tragedies in history occurred on January 8, 1986. Shortly after it was launched, the
space shuttle Challenger exploded, killing seven astronauts, including Christa McAuliffe, a New
Hampshire schoolteacher chosen to be the first teacher in space ( Challenger Disaster, n.d.). The
explosion was caused by a failure of the O rings of the solid rocket boosters. The O rings were unable
to seat properly, causing the leaking of hot combustion gases, which burnt through the external fuel
tank. The malfunction was not any one person s or organization s fault; it was caused by many factors
including the decision to launch despite the cold weather, the poor communication between
management levels of the National Aeronautics and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The material was kept at the lowers levels of the decision making process ( The Space Shuttle
Challenger Disaster, n.d.). This infringes upon NSPE Code II.3.1. It states, Engineers shall be
objective and truthful in professional reports, statements, or testimony. They shall include all relevant
and pertinent information in such reports, statements, or testimony, which should bear the date
indicating when it was current ( Code of Ethics, n.d.). The information regarding the hazardous
temperatures was applicable to the arrangement of the launch, and it was not reported to levels I or II
at NASA management ( The Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster, n.d.). Also, NASA was eager to
launch Challenger. The agency was fervent to launch the shuttlecraft so the launch pad could be
renovated before the next mission, which was to launch a probe to observe Halley s Comet to
accumulate data a few days before Russia launched a similar probe ( Engineering Ethics, n.d.). In
addition, the Reagan administration set out incredibly ambitious goals for NASA, as well as other
forms of pressure ( The Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster, n.d.). NSPE III.1.5 states, Engineers shall
not promote their own interest at the expense of the dignity and integrity of the profession. By making
it a goal to collect information before Russia did so, the agency was only seeing what would benefit
itself, instead of what would benefit the seven astronauts aboard the Challenger. Furthermore, by

Cloud Application Essay
The project aims to develop and sustain the necessary tooling that will assist Cloud application
lifecycle management operations, using open standards and languages, where appropriate. As
aforementioned, these operations are classified into three distinct categories: (1) application
description, (2) application deployment and (3) application monitoring. Cloud application
management framework (CAMF) will follow the Eclipse OSGi plug in based software architecture for
each of the aforementioned operations and will inherit the same look and feel that Eclipse users are
accustomed to. To guarantee the quality of the resulting product, the project will follow designated
development cycles with rigorous code reviews, unit tests and release cycles (eclipse, ND).
INTRODUCTION A cloud application (or cloud application) is an application program that capacities
in the cloud, with a few attributes of an immaculate desktop application and a few qualities of an
unadulterated Web application. A desktop application lives altogether on a solitary gadget at the client
s area (it doesn t essentially need to be a desktop PC). A Web application is put away altogether on a
remote server and is conveyed over the Internet through a program interface. Similar to other Eclipse
frameworks, CAMF organizes all the files related to a Cloud application in a structured hierarchy that
utilizes the Eclipse file system (see Figure 1). Figure 1 The Cloud Application Project view.

Lenore Alexander Narrative
Lenore Alexander. The name still to this day that name sends a dejected feeling straight through my
body with unrelenting force. I have never experienced pain like the pain that was felt on February 11,
2014. This was the day that my Nana was taken all too soon from this world. Taken from me. But first
I shall start at the beginning. Lenore Van Natta was the most giving individual you could ever find.
She gave so much to everyone and never expected anything in return. Her doors were always open to
anyone in need and as soon as you walked in you would be greeted with open arms and a smile every
time. She practically raised me after my mom went back to work and she made everything fun. She

She told stories that began to have new meaning when she told them for the last time. They felt deeper
and drive themselves further into my heart where they still reside. Nana then went on to explain how
she was sick of fighting and her one wish was for us to just let her go peacefully. At the time I was so
angered by her selfishness. How could she give up when my aunt had another baby on the way. A
baby that would never know her grandmother. A baby who would never know the warmth of her hugs.
I begged her to stay. I cried at her side begging her to stay so we could make more memories like the
ones that she had just told. She refused and told me to stay strong with a smile that I took the wrong
way. I was so angry at her. How could she abandon her family? How could she be so greedy to do
this? I told her I loved her and walked out of the room in a rage and when I got to the hallway I
collapsed in an immense rush of emotions. This competes for the lowest part of my life. I sobbed on
the floor and didn t care who saw me or when a kind nurse tried to help me up. I was frozen in anguish
as my mind tried to figure out what was happening. If I had known

The Curse Of Monterone In Act 1 Of Rigoletto
The curse of Monterone At the end of scene 1 of act 1 of Giuseppe Verdi s famous opera, Rigoletto,
the Duke s hunchbacked court jester (Rigoletto, a baritone) is cursed by Count Monterone (also a
baritone); this incident is commonly referred to as the curse of Monterone. The scene goes as follows:
the Count of Monterone, furious with the Duke for having seduced his daughter and dishonored his
family name, barges into the Duke s extravagant ball seeking revenge and dramatically changing the
mood and tone of the scene. Rigoletto, who is ever eager to remain in favor with the Duke, cruelly
mocks the Count (which only serves to further enrage him). Interestingly, instead of putting a booming
orchestra underneath the deep voices of the Count and Rigoletto, Verdi instead chose to use violins to
indicated the intense nervousness of the situation. The Duke promptly has the Count arrested, and as
he is being taken away by the guards the Count turns to Rigoletto and delivers a powerful curse upon
him. It is the curse of a father, and Rigoletto, who is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As it is generally understood today, bel canto refers to the Italian originated vocal style which
prevailed throughout most of Europe during the 18th century until about 1840. It originated with the
first operas during the Baroque era (early 1700s) and was later revived by Rossini, Donizetti and
Bellini. During this time, bel canto was a reassertion of the emphasis on the voice as the most
important expressive element in opera, in distinct contrast to the other popular operatic vocal styles of
the time. The words of bel canto operas can be rather dull, but their open vowels allow singers to
create beautiful music that effectively expresses the feelings of the character. The vocal line in bel
canto scores calls for soft, rounded notes and great agility in ornamentation and

A Thousand Peaks Vs. The Maids Of Honor
At first glance, the 17th century paintings of the Baroque period, India, and China may not have much
in common, but upon closer inspection there are relationships and divergences to consider beyond the
surface. These details can be seen between Bichitr s Jahangir Preferring a Sufi Shaykh to Kings, Wang
Hui s A Thousand Peaks and Myriad Ravines, and Diego Velázquez s Las Meninas (The Maids of
Honor). While each carries the style of its own location of origin, they all showcase influence and
subject matter similarities and differences worth making note of, most specifically the presence of
duality in focus within the paintings.
The first painting is 17th century art from India, Bichitr s piece depicts Jahangiri being seated among

(Sullivan).
The third of the paintings stemming from the Baroque period done by Velázquez is one of his many
works for the court, setting the tone in the particular area, while not extending much further (49,
Bazin). The court employing Velázquez was that of King Philip IV, with the focus of this painting
being the king s daughter. This particular piece has not only the artist himself depicted, the children of
the court scattered about, but also a mirror in the back showing the King and Queen standing as the
painter is depicted to be painting their portrait. Each point of attention draws way from the former,
then pushing to the next in a cycle of focus. Once Velázquez started using almost strictly the style of
portraits, he mastered the art using the available means to the fullest. The painting at hand in particular
uses his mastery of portraiture to the fullest in varying who is being painted and their positions on the
canvas (59 60, Bazin).
Each painting draws influence from their individual location of origin, mostly in subject, to appeal to
the patrons of the time. While each piece was created within the 17th century, there are obvious
differences from place to place in how they were meant to be created. This is evident in the materials
used for the paintings, Velázquez s piece being oil on canvas, Hui s being a hanging scroll consisting
of ink on paper, and

Poverty In Africa Essay
Project Kwanele
Although Africa is the second largest continent, one can say poverty is an ever present situation
(Abebe and Quaicoe, 2014). Largely due to historical background, social inequalities are the
foundation of poverty in Africa. The continent has, for decades, been viewed as the epitome of
poverty, with many countries plagued by unemployment, malnutrition, lack of education and limited
access to healthcare. The difficulty with this is that poverty then becomes a viscous cycle, passed on
from generation to generation, and thus hindering development of these countries. With several
countries having gained independence, the development of African countries has been on a steady
escalation, even being viewed as a potential for investment by global investors. However it takes more
than a change in governance to correct the wrongs of years of social injustices. Abebe and Quaicoe
(2014) found that policies in these countries have a major impact on poverty. And this is the reason
why policies (particularly those addressing social development) need to be well drafted and well
executed to ensure that wealth is evenly distributed, in order to minimise the gap between the rich and
the poor.
Over and above impeding economic growth, poverty may have detrimental effects that can threaten
the survival of a population. An impoverished community lacks nutritious food that is supposed to
strengthen one s body to be able to fight off infections and other diseases. The State of Food

All The Queen s Children Essay
Dr. Carole Levin outlines the aspects of Queen Elizabeth I s social perception as mother of her nation
and the Virgin Queen in her article All the Queen s Children: Elizabeth I and the Meaning of
Motherhood. I agree with Levin s analysis of Elizabeth s use of her public image as a political tool in
the examples she gives, and I extend her argument to Elizabeth s speeches and writings. Levin argues
that the inflammatory topic of Elizabeth s virginity and rumored children plagued her because she was
a powerful woman. Virginity and motherhood are both states of purity: motherhood is a purity of love,
and virginity is a purity of sexuality and spirituality. Both of these traits are ideal in the traditional
model of womanhood, but not seen as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe Levin is correct in emphasizing Elizabeth s maturity in handling the irrationality of the
public, and I add that one of Elizabeth s tactics to maintain her image was publishing her poetry.
Elizabeth s poem On Monsieur s Departure not only garners sympathy from readers, but also works in
her favor as a ruler. Instead of portraying herself as rigid and rejecting marriage entirely, Elizabeth
humanizes herself to the public by writing about the pain of a lost love. Revealing her romantic
emotions while ultimately never marrying conveys a clear message to her subjects: Elizabeth will only
marry if it is beneficial or necessary to them, even if it hurts her heart to refuse. Elizabeth reveals her
pain when she does not marry the subject of the poem because it was not in the kingdom s best
interest, and plays to stereotypes about women s emotional and romantic nature, supporting Levin s
observation of her social

Employee Retention In Nursing Practice
Introduction:
In nursing research is crucial for nurses in delivering care for patients. Today, nurses are accepting the
requirements of evidenced based practice into their clinical areas and also for decision making.
Researchers had argued that regardless what discipline the healthcare providers belongs too; it is an
obligation for all of them to strive and extend the body of knowledge for better patients outcomes
(Polit Hungler, 2001). As for nursing, there is a lot of knowledge can be gained by nurses via research
studies. Globally the ultimate goal in healthcare is to facilitate patients to reach the highest level of
health status that would allow them to participate in the social and economic life of the community
that lives in. To achieve these goals, the healthcare industries need to adapt the best practice approach
for patients care. Best practice is adopted via research; the search scientific knowledge is indeed
strongly supported by nationwide (Lea, Williams Donahue, 2005).
In current nursing practice the used of EBP is not something new to nurses. It is believe that every

Review Of The Bacchae, The Aeneid, And Book 15 Of...
Within the societies of ancient Greece and Rome, there was a plethora of regimes, Caesars, and
empires at the helm of everyday life. The political sphere encountered in the daily routines of ancient
Greeks and Romans gave influence to the multitude of literary works produced in these societies. The
works of Euripides, Virgil, and Ovid gave a vehicle for these writers to infuse commentary about the
politics of the day. Politics is how groups of people organize making decisions that affect the
individuals contained within said groups. The Bacchae, the Aeneid, and Book 15 of Metamorphoses
all contain commentary concerning politics within their content. In Euripides the Bacchae, the city of
Thebes is shown to have a system of political inheritance as Pentheus is given control over the city by
his grandfather Cadmus, the founder of the city. The god Dionysus is also a grandson of Cadmus, yet
is not chosen to be the heir to Thebes, which creates a rivalry between Dionysus and Pentheus.
Pentheus does not allow Dionysus into the city of Thebes or give recognition to Dionysus at all.
Dionysus and Pentheus both wish to establish their own political rule over the city of Thebes.
Pentheus attempts to rule Thebes in an Apollonian fashion. The women brought to Thebes by
Dionysus are put under arrest at the order of Pentheus, due to the drunken partying they were having
due to Dionysus powers. The women s party went against the social order enforced by the city of

Relationship Between Diet Soda And Weight Gain
In recent years there have been many studies showing a link between consuming diet soda and weight
gain. At the University of Texas Health Science Center in 2008 one study showed that non overweight
people that consumed more than 21 diet soft drinks per week, containing artificial sweeteners, were
almost twice as likely to become overweight or obese (Pavliv, 2012). The participants were studied
and followed for eight years. The end result showed those that consumed diet soda were more likely to
gain weight than those that did not consume any form of soda. Another study was done at Purdue
University in 2008 by Susan Swithers and Terry Davidson (as cited by Pavliv, 2012), showed rats
consuming artificial sweeteners gained more weight. The study showed rats consuming the artificial
sweetener, which contain no caloric calories, actually consumed more calories and gained more
weight than the rats that were fed regular sugar, which is loaded with calories. The rats consuming the
artificial sweetener also were shown to burn fewer calories during exercise. The reasoning behind this

Wireless Evil Twin Attack
Abstract
In Today s world multiple Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) can coexist in a airspace. Every
wireless mobility devices tries to find the access point through probe request using a unique name that
is the Service Set Identifier (SSID) of the network to make automatic authentication. As a wireless
user you are concerned only with the broadcast SSIDs that let you connect to a WLAN. This paper
discusses about the Wireless Mobility devices communication security issues using Basic Service Set
Identifier BSSID or Extended Service Set Identifier ESSID which a network administrator need to

Every wireless mobility devices tries to find the access point through probe request using a unique
name that is the Service Set Identifier (SSID) of the network to make automatic authentication. The
users are usually unaware of which basic service set (BSS) they belong to. When the user physically
moves the laptop from one room to another, the BSS used could change because of moving from the
area covered by one access point to the area covered by another access point, but this does not affect
the connectivity of the laptop. In this paper we are going to study how a mobility device

Biography of Charles Lucky Luciano Essay
Biography of Charles Lucky Luciano Almost everyone experiences a criminal career (Moffitt, 43).
The onset begins during adolescence and involves a series of petty crimes. The amount of crimes
committed during the criminal career at any given time is the rate at which the offender offends. What
differentiates the career criminal from the person who had a criminal career is this; Whereas the latter
by and large discontinues their crimes by the time they are in their mid 20s, those who are career
criminals will persist with their offending at a high rate during their life course (Moffitt, 41). One
theory put forth argues that the reason that people continue to commit crimes is that they have

These crimes, however, were still considered petty and are not highly atypical for an adolescent boy.
Despite these delinquent behaviors, Salvatore s fate as a career criminal had not yet been sealed. At
age sixteen Salvatore acquired a job at a hat factory. However, the benefits of acquiring adult social
roles would not act as a means of desistence for Salvatore. The job would give Salvatore a modest
living; one that provided a steady income of seven dollars a week. It was on a Friday on his way home
from work that Salvatore s life course would take a turn for the worse; Not by bad luck but by a stroke
of good luck. Salvatore gambled his seven dollar weekly wage and wound up winning $244 in a game
of alley craps. In turn Salvatore adopted the nickname Lucky and, instead of going to work the next
day, Luciano would go to the alleys. A far cry from shoplifting and gambling, Lucky s criminal career
began to show a good deal of escalation by his mid teens. When an oppurtunity arose and it meant
fiscal gains Lucky would take it. Up to this point all that had been available was petty crimes (e.g.
theft and gambling), but drugs provided him the opportunity of a higher standard of living. The
change of environment led to a dramatic shift in the crimes he would commit frequency at which he

Computer Attacks And Its Impact On The Security
Introduction
With the rising evolution of businesses, the evolution of business and institution data security has also
evolved exceptionally. Various data security methods have been devised to ensure that vulnerability is
mitigated but at the same time cyber criminals such as hackers have also evolved their data hacking
methods as they look for the least weaknesses in a company and exploit it. The essay looks into
various trends that have emerged in ensuring that data is safe by institution, the most vulnerable spots
for various companies have been looked into too. When it comes to security of mobile devices and
wireless networks, their security perspectives have been looked into in addition to the way the existing
companies are protecting themselves from computer attacks.
Trends in Security Network
There has been developed even more severe and dynamic viruses that are used to hack various

Iranian institutions by an adversary (unsubstantially claimed to be Israel or U.S.A) that is able to
penetrate various Iranian systems and control their nuclear reactors, destroy oil pipelines and so on.

Government In Cannery Row
The Government is a source of help for many people. Sometimes this grand of a government fails on
us. Then people begin to struggle. However sometimes the government takes over our lives to help us.
Not like a National Socialistic take over of our lives, but a socialistic. However, there are also many
different types of ideologies that the government controls its people. The people of Cannery Row have
created a socialist atmosphere to replace the government that has failed them.
Socialism in America began in Chicago IL, June 15 21, 1897. This ideology was founded at a joint
convention of the new combined American Railway Union. This was due to the two Railway
Industries combining with each other, Eugene V. Debs and the Brotherhood of the ... Show more

Lee knew some people would never pay back and some people would need to take time to pay back
with 0% interest.
Communism is a very similar ism to socialism. Both are left winged. However, Communism is more
similar to Liberalism in the aspect of helping out its own people. In communism the government
makes everyone at the same level, no one richer or poorer nor have more pay or less pay. And there is
no such thing as private property, government monopolizes with industries. Everyone is an equal and
everyone helps each other. This is a revolutionary socialistic concept.
The last to understand Socialism is National Socialism. This is Hitler s form of government, also
known as Nazism. This form of government is nothing like Cannery Row s government, at all. In
National Socialism people are not equal, racist, value of property and race are above equality, and the
absence of religion. This ideology is almost the complete opposite of socialism that is running through
Cannery Row. What is similar is absence of religion, Cannery cease to have any type of religion and
the people in the town are no racists at all. Otherwise everything in Cannery Row is the complete
opposite of Socialism.

Polycystic Kidney Disease Essay
Polycystic Kidney Disease is an inherited disease that can also form from having existing kidney
problems. It is when cysts develop in the kidney and interferes with the filtering of waste from the
blood. The cyst in the kidney can lead to inflation and kidney failure, hence as to why it is the fourth
leading cause to kidney failure. There are three cases of PKD, these includes Autosomal Dominant
PKD (ADPKD), Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD) and Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease (ACKD).
These types of PKD are determined on how and when you get the disease or how prone to it you are.
Autosomal Dominant PKD is most common with nearly 90% of people who form PKD, having
Autosomal Dominant. This disease is mostly developed later in life between 30 40 years of age
therefore is known as adult PKD, in saying this the disease can develop in childhood but it s very rare.
When it comes to inheriting ADPKD, it only takes one parent to have the gene of PKD and its 50%
likely the child will develop PKD as well, therefore why is it most popular as it only takes one parent
not both. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These forms simply depend on what stage in life you develop the disease at. Perinatal form, when the
child is born with it. Neonatal form, when the disease develops during the first month. Infantile form,
the disease is developed when the child is between 3 6 months of age. Juvenile form, when the disease
develops after the child is 1 year old. ADPKD can only be inherited but both parents must be carrying
the gene for this disease to develop, this is how it gets its name Recessive PKD. If only one gene has
this disease then it stay recessive as your body still has one normal working gene, but if both genes
have the recessive disease than it causes the body to have no working copies of that particular gene,
therefore it shows and forms the

The Plaza Was Owned By The Aggressive And Ambitious Sohel...
The Plaza was owned by the aggressive and ambitious Sohel Rana, who exploited his political
connections to acquire illegal permits and bribe government officials to get approval construction. He
had extra floors built without obtaining the proper permits or approval from the local government
authorities. Sohel Rana (like building owners in general) was able to take advantage of the loopholes
in the system through his ties to political allies and his wealth. Not only did he ensure that inspections
were rarely performed, but was also able to bribe officials to build on a rejected, unsuitable plot of
land, to add additional floors to the building, and to persuade workers to enter the building despite the
cracks and warnings from engineers. Also, he allegedly remarked to the media on the same day that
the cracks were a trivial matter. Rana Plaza was built after taking permission from the Savar Mayor
(who, like Rana was also an Awami League member) a person with no legal authority to issue this
permit. According to Emdadul Islam, chief engineer of the state run Capital Development Authority,
the owner of the building had permission for only a five storey building from the local municipality.
The illegal extension by a further three stories was overlooked by the authorities due to Rana s
political connections (affiliation with ruling Awami League party). Rana brought paid gang members

Paris Vs. Helen
The story of Paris and Helen is captivating in that they both play different roles and accumulate
different levels of blame in each different retelling of the story. In some, they are the destructive
lovers, whose all consuming desire obliterates Troy and costs many great Greek warriors their lives. In
others, Helen is the victim of Aphrodite s enchantment and Paris s lust; and in some, Paris is portrayed
as a generally weak man who tries to do the right thing, and often fails miserably at it. One question
that often comes up when analyzing their relationship is: how much agency did they both characters
have over their lives and how are we meant to view their relationship and the destruction it causes.
One common thread that always is deeply ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of Paris most unpleasant scenes occur when Aphrodite attempts to defend the injured Paris to
Helen after Paris flees from his battle with Menelaus: You would not think that he came from fighting
against a man; you would think he was going rather to a dance, or rested and had been dancing lately
(The Iliad, 127). Although Aphrodite intends this as a compliment, there is no doubt that this is a very
condescending view of Paris worth. Despite the fact that he has embarrassed himself and his city by
fleeing from battle like a coward, he is reduced even further to his most basic qualities: his looks. This
is very demeaning for a character who is already an outsider in his own community; additionally, Paris
life has arguably been completely dismantled by his looks. Aphrodite sees Paris through a superficial
lens because she is a goddess; she has little concept of human emotion or empathy for Paris
humiliation. She truly believes he lives a charmed life because of her and fails to see the darkness and
pain that everyone, including Paris, has suffered because of her. Paris now has to return to battle
knowing that he will never overcome the shame of failing his people and of bucking under the weight
of his cowardice, and she will never understand that burden; she doesn t have to. The other heroes all
seek glory in battle; yet Paris is still on the outside looking in, as it is clear to him that glory in battle
will never his path. It is a moment of painful clarity for

Comparing Macbeth And Great Expectations
There are more than enough examples from Macbeth and Great Expectations to prove that subversion
of gender roles, a term that describes someone acting in a way that is not expected from those of their
said gender, is evident in both writing pieces. There are a number of connections between the women
of the play and novel; this can be seen in their stern, powerful and leader like and always changing
personalities that a number of female characters share. For instance, Miss Havisham s burning hatred
for men that she implemented into Estella s mind, to Lady Macbeth s level of ambition to have her
husband become king. Others include similarities in levels of knowledge, even though they were
considered commoners on a part of the social ladder where a lack of knowledge is expected, and
examples of how they use their high levels of knowledge to their advantage. This can also be
considered evidence of subversion of gender roles; women at the time were not expected to be
knowledgeable by society as they are now. Other connections would be based on the topic of visual
appearance overall, with connections to how they portray themselves to other characters and the
reader throughout. The women of these two works show an exceptionable amount of power, control
and capability of holding a family together a number of times throughout the novel and the play. A
leading factor in this is their personalities they spoke their mind, and were not afraid of the
consequences. which happen to be

made up an English word into Spanish, which it was more like Spanglish type of deal. For example,
instead of saying relationship , he would say relachion or money to monero. I thought it was funny
and he was just joking, but he was actually serious. I corrected him and asked if he knew he was
wrong; he said he kind of knew, but that every time he makes up words, it makes his customers laugh,
and that laughter always creates money in his business. As mentioned in Multiple Voices , not all

dominant language group in America. Therefore, Raj was able to shift from his L1 to L2 (English), to

Thomas Edison’s History with the Incandescent Light Bulb
Thomas Edison s History with the Incandescent Light Bulb Who invented the light bulb? Only a few
really know the true answer to this question. Most people around the US simply think that Thomas
Edison invented the light bulb. The story or invention myth behind the bulb varies drastically from the
general public s belief. The belief is that a lone inventor, Thomas Edison, sat down in his workshop
and simply created the incandescent light bulb out of thin air. Edison in no way created the
incandescent light bulb out of thin air. He used the knowledge of previous researchers and inventors to
make a the first commercialized light bulb and gained world wide recognition as a result. According to
the U.S. Department of Energy, the first know traces of light can be tracked to Great Britain in 1803.
Humphry Davy created the first ever man made light seen in the World. He demonstrated the ability to
flow electric current through two pieces of carbon powered by a battery source creating a bright and
powerful arc. Some researchers give Mr. Davy credit as the inventor of light (DOE). Things took a
drastic change in 1835. James Bowman Lindsay was able to keep a constant electric current flowing.
He used parts of Davy s old design and simply improved it. His ability to keep current flowing
revolutionized the technology and created the first ever incandescent light bulb (Live Science). Edison
was not born until 1843, so it is ridiculous for him to be credited with inventing the

Things to Ponder
It has been observed that the company is violating the principle of control activity of segregation of
duties. The accountant is acting as the treasurer and controller. In this dual role, he purchases all of the
supplies and pays for these purchases. He also receives the checks and completes the monthly bank
reconciliation. Various frauds are possible when one person handles related activities. These duties
must be segregated to multiple personnel.
Use of the three principles of internal control segregation of record keeping from physical custody,
documentation and independent internal verification is recommended. This will deliver an effective
system of internal controls. Any attempt at fraudulent activity will be detected unless there is collusion
among the employees.
Internal controls over cash receipts should include:
(a) designating only personnel such as cashiers to handle cash;
(b) assigning the duties of receiving cash, recording cash, and having custody of cash to different
individuals;
(c) obtaining remittance advices for mail receipts, cash register tapes for over the counter receipts, and
deposit slips for bank deposits;
(d) using company safes and bank vaults to store cash with access limited to authorized personnel, and
using cash registers in executing over the counter receipts;
(e) making independent daily counts of register receipts and

Three Portrayals of Climate Change
You are what you eat. We ve all heard the old saying, reminding us that what we take in, we can t help

are what you read, hear, and/or watch just doesn t have the same ring to it, but it s operating along the
same lines.
But, in yet another difference between humans and food, (P1) creative artists use a variety of

In the beginning, it is possible that this movie was originally intended to do some good. Though
Hollywood reeks of opportunistic capitalism, many of the writers and directors probably had some
truly artistic roots and intentions deep inside them somewhere, at some time. But ultimately, any
semblance of respectably artistic, persuasive, or credible characteristics were horribly mutated in the
name of sensationalism.
The idea for DAT may have been centered on climate change, but the writers quickly tacked on a love
story, dad son issues, crappy science, and man hunting wolves on top of the instantly induced ice age
plot. As such, the movie sacrificed an originally plausible appeal to environmentalism for people who
like a little less talk, a little more action.
The movie was not all bad. One interesting technique was to cast the concept of climate change as
inducing colder temperatures. I think that one of the leading reasons that global warming is not being
confronted more forcefully is that seriously people generally like warm weather. And, in an extra twist
of irony, the nations that are contributing the most greenhouse gases to the earth s atmosphere are
generally in cooler climates, where

Religious Conflict in Russia
RELIGIOUS CONFLICT IN RUSSIA
One of the great ironies of history is that Marxism, an atheistic theory, was first implemented in
Russia—a land inhabited by millions of believers practicing most of the world s great religions. In fact,
religion is so integral to the culture and history of Russia, it would be impossible to gain a full
understanding for the unique character of the country and its people without a careful examination of
the religious factors at play throughout its history.
BACKGROUND
Basic Demographics Any discussion of Russia must begin with its single most striking feature—its
sheer vastness. During World War II, a German general noted how his troops were depressed by the

In terms of languages, Russian is the common official language throughout the Federation, understood
by 99 percent of its current inhabitants and widespread in many adjacent areas of Asia and Eastern
Europe. However, national subdivisions of Russia have additional official languages, further reflecting
the diverse ethnicity of the country. As a result, there are more than 100 languages spoken throughout
the nation, most tied to the particular ethnic groups from which they sprang.
Economics and Education Perhaps the most significant impact of the collapse of the Soviet Union in
1991 has been the economic chaos which subsequently consumed the country. For five years
following the collapse, Russia saw its comparatively developed centrally planned economy contract
severely. It was not until 1997 that Russia began to show signs of recovery as a result of its new open
market policies. Since that time, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country has grown by an
average of 6.7 percent per year, largely on the back of oil exports, as well as a steadily developing
service and industrial output. Currently, Russia s GDP by purchasing power parity (PPP) is
approximately $1.5 trillion, making it the ninth largest economy in the world and the fifth largest in
Europe. If this growth rate is sustained, the country will become the second largest European economy

Cocky versus Swagger in Beowulf and Sir Gowain Essay
Cocky vs. Swagger
In entertainment, no matter if it is movies, music, or plays. One can almost always look in the story
line and find a hero. The hero is perceived to be the character that everyone looks to step forward in a
time of need. The hero can be like a savior and is expected to be like a savior by the other characters
in the story in any and every situation. There is also a case in stories where the hero has to be found
and is more of the unsung type of character within a story in which that character has to learn how to
adjust to the advantages and disadvantages of their heroism and how it may affect the other characters
in the story. Beowulf and Sir Gowain posses these types of characteristics and by actually reading the

Heroes are heroes because they show exceptional amounts of courage, and they do it consistently on
the everyday basis. That is not possible to do. The extraordinary things that Beowulf and Sir Gowain
do are things that the average man would not do because of the lack of courage and confidence. That
is why heroes are who they are, the best of the best. They stick out from the crowd and that is why one
may feel like they deserve more than just the regular confidence that the average man gets, it is only
necessary. Being a hero is more of a mental challenge than anything else, because one has to believe
in oneself more than any other person can believe in them because whoever believes in the hero can
not possibly know and understand just exactly what the hero is going through. The other characters
will never know and understand why the hero faces the problems, defeats the problems, and
overcomes the obstacles that the hero faces. All that the characters and the people want in the stories is
for whom ever the hero is, they want that person to save them from the people or things that threaten
them. In other words, the people do no care so much about what the hero is going through, the people
just want the hero to deliver, so it is an absolute must for the hero s confidence to be above the average
person. This also applies for real life experiences for this day and age. The only difference is this is

The Rights Of The Global Warming
My argument is that those who have taken part in causing global warming, which are the developed
countries, should be held responsible by cutting back more than other countries to correct the injustice
that they have inflicted on the poorer countries. These nations are infringing on the rights of the
victimized nations. Therefore, I would argue that there is an ethical basis for deciding whether some
countries should cut back emissions more than others because the situation is not only unfair, but also
violates the rights of innocent people. Everyone has a right to life, a right to not be harmed, and more
specifically, the right not to have one s life taken directly as a means to further one s end (Finnis).
Immanuel Kant thought reason tells us to, Act only on a maxim that you can will to be a universal law
(Kant). Under Kantism views, an ethical act is ethical if it can become universal law without
undermining some sort of construct. If we say that developed countries can emit greenhouse gases,
thus causing harm, without consequence, then it will undermine the principle that the innocent has the
right to not be harmed. Therefore, when that right is violated, there is an ethical issue. For example, if
a burglar steals, it is only fair that they are reprimanded accordingly by giving back what they stole,
plus an additional punishment, to ameliorate the harm that he caused. To extrapolate this example to
global warming, the developed nations are stealing from the poor

Enid Schildkrout s Into The Heart Of Africa
Into the Heart of Africa was an infamous exhibition at the Royal Ontario Museum in 1989 that made
its way into textbooks as an example of cultural appropriation. The exhibition advertised itself as the
first major African exhibition in Toronto and aimed to be a critical examination of the relationship
between Ontario and Africa at the turn of the century (Burret 2004: p. 127). Through the juxtaposition
of provocative colonial imagery and artifacts with critical texts and ironic captions, the exhibition
challenges dominant colonial narratives regarding Africa (p. 132). Yet, within a few months of its
opening, the museum made national headlines with accusations of racism, cultural appropriation, and

(Young, 2009). From a post colonial perspective, this practice is both harmful and hegemonic
systematically devaluing the cultures of minority groups and casting them as exotic or mysterious.
While this is far from the original intent of Into the Heart of Africa , Anthropologist Enid Schildkrout
argues that it is inevitable that it becomes perceived this way with its ambiguity and reliance on irony
and juxtaposition, built upon unrealistic, and untested, expectations about the audience (Schildkrout
1991: p. 16). Some scholars argue that despite the exhibition s intentions, members of the general
public do often trust museums as authoritative sources, and were thus shocked by exhibit s the violent
images and seemingly colonial presentation of African artifacts. (Burret 2004, p. 139). Others draw
attention to the lack of involvement of the African Canadian community, arguing that this led to a
detachment between the curators of the exhibition and the needs and perspective of both its audience

lessons to be drawn from this experience from the importance of community involvement to the value
of a clear presentations of themes and curatorial

Natural Selection In Animals
If natural selection is to result in the evolution of traits associated with adaptation within a given plant
population certain conditions such as sexual reproduction, mutations, and gene flow, all of which
facilitate genetic variation, must exist. While plants can reproduce asexually, those that reproduce
sexually produce new alleles through genetic recombination. This allows for the emergence of new
phenotypes, and subsequently new individuals, that are better suited for their environment. Likewise,
mutations, which are changes in DNA, can add genetic variation to a population and create phenotypic
changes. If these alterations result in individuals being better suited to their environment, natural

Decline in Water Supply in India
Introduction
The available water in India has declined drastically over the past several decades due to the rise in
demand for water sources across almost every industry. This shortage has greatly affected all activity
in India, including the agricultural industry and the available drinking water for domestic life. The
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, or the FOA, believes that India will literally
run out of water if certain steps are not taken to replenish India s aquifers. To fully grasp the matter, an
explanation of the problem is below.
The main cause for concern is that India s flourishing agricultural industry uses the 91% of water

This type of depletion has experts exhausting resources to halt the progression of groundwater
extraction and to move to better innovations of irrigation enforcement.
Lack of Social Economic Stability from Overuse The overuse of water has raised concerns across
India and in some cases farmers have taken their lives from the poverty caused by the lack of
necessary water for their crops to prosper.

Fluorosis Epidemic in India Fluoride is a geologic material that lies underneath most of India. As
water tables decrease, farmers are forced to drill deeper into aquifers to unsafe zones containing
dangerous levels of fluoride. In India, the Fluorosis and Rural Development Foundation have
estimated that over 60 million people suffer from diseases caused by the overexposure of fluoride in
drinking water from underground aquifers.
Split in Surface Groundwater Hydrologic Connections With the continued overuse of aquifers,
sigmaxi.com states that In the Maheshwaram watershed of Andhra Pradesh chronic depletion of
groundwater has lowered the water table 15 m below the ground surface . This causes the streams and
springs once fed by groundwater to disappear. Basically, natural tanks that once held water have no
way to collect water anymore because the pathways

Poverty In Developing Countries
In today s global economy, if we want economic growth and development in developing countries,
improvements need to be made that provide opportunities for the well being of the citizens. Economic
growth and development has factors that include poverty and life expectancy rates. The various causes
of poverty make a huge impact and it changes trends in many countries that effect the way people live.
Even with certain changes that the government has made, numerous individuals and nations are still
living in a state of poverty. Poverty is a significant issue to society that may be overlooked in certain
countries because it is normalized, especially in developing countries, such as India, Africa, Haiti and
more. The citizens of these countries may be living off of $2.00 or less to provide for themselves and
their family. The level of poverty that increased and changed the lives of millions is the main cause of
conflict in developing countries.
Poverty has a wide range of causes and is defined as when a community lacks the financial resources
and essentials to enjoy a minimum standard of life... ( Poverty Investopedia ). Many developing
countries, or third world countries, are living in a state of poverty. Developing countries may be based
off of literacy rates, economics, or lower ratings based on these statistical criteria... (Kuepper).

Appendicitis Case Study
Appendicitis
Introduction
The appendix is located on the lower right side of the abdomen attached to the colon. There is no
known purpose for the appendix, however throughout history there were periods when the appendix
could have potentially served a purpose. The appendix produces mucus and holds lymphatic tissue
with bacteria. It is an organ that can easily get inflamed or infected, if this occurs, the individual has
appendicitis. Appendicitis can occur when a blockage appears in the opening of the appendix and the
bacteria held on the inside get released to the appendix wall. The appendix can inflame so much that it
could rupture. This can cause an infection inside the abdomen (Bennington Castro, 2014).

Typically, appendicitis begins with pain in your abdomen and moves to the right progressively. Teens
and adults have a higher chance to face the risk of getting appendicitis, however it can occur to
anyone. If not treated immediately, it can lead to a rupture or infection, which will eventually affect
the whole abdomen. Patients will experience severe pain on the right side of their abdomen, fever,
nausea, and vomiting. Once diagnosed, a surgeon will most likely perform a Laparoscopic
appendectomy, however there is also a possibility they will perform an open appendectomy if there is
a rupture. Appendicitis is a condition that can easily get resolved by the right doctors and staff;
therefore new advancements like antibiotics are being introduced yearly to bring additional success to

Main Themes In Chinese Cinderella
The book Chinese Cinderella, written by Adeline Yen Mah has four main themes. They are: family
relationships, abandonment loneliness, self esteem and history. The author Adeline Yen Mah, also
wrote the book Falling Leaves but Chinese Cinderella was written for younger audiences. Chinese
Cinderella is actually an autobiography, not a fairy tale. Adeline (the protagonist) has to work for her
dreams, not by wishing from a fairy godmother. This book was set in the 1900 s (1941 1952). At that
time WW2 was happening making Adeline s life harder. The moral of this book would be that no
matter your circumstances, you can work hard and achieve your dreams. This book is really
captivating and it tells the reader not to underestimate anyone. That s why I think this is an amazing
book for everyone to read.
There are a range of genres in Chinese Cinderella. They are adventure, drama, and history. The genres
change the story from being a fairy tale to a true autobiography. As the book s genres are adventure
and history, it does not relate to the fairy tale of Cinderella. Adeline s childhood is harsh and she has to
find her own ways without a fairy godmother. At the start of multiple chapters, the year is written and
historical events are told, which gives the reader historical knowledge. Another historical scene is
when Nai Nai was telling Adeline about her bound feet (page 7 8). There are lots of dramas and
adventures that go on in Adeline s world, which relate to the themes. These genres make the book
harder to put down.
The plot and structure in this autobiography makes the story of Adeline s childhood flow better. The
orientation started by Niang marrying Adeline s father. At Adeline s birth her mother died so Adeline
was treated badly and unfairly. In the complication, Adeline was unwanted from the start. She was
sent away to an orphanage because she was wanted by no one. In the resolution Adeline decided after
winning the playwriting competition that she wanted to be a writer. She studied medicine at Oxford
University with Third Brother. The reflection is that no matter what your conditions are you can
achieve anything like Adeline did. In the story Adeline read a newspaper article that said It was

European Citizenship
1. Summary
There have been a lot of contributions by scholars to the widely discussed topic of European
citizenship. In his article Espen D.H. Olsen argues in contrast to many others, that the Maastricht
Treaty was not year zero in the EU citizenship discourse (Olsen 2008, p. 40). His study deals with the
time before the general discussion over the European citizenship started in the 1970s (cf. ibid, p. 41ff.)
The article s main finding states that European citizenship has been in existence from the European
integration s starting point, the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). Olsen defines his
concept of citizenship as a status of individuals in relation to a political unit (ibid, p. 41) which he
divides in the four dimensions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
53). That is clearly contradicting to his own finding before and generally seems to be too big of a
stretching of his concept. He merely speculates about the status of membership in that case. It can also
be argued that the coal and steel workers were of course included in the wording of the contract,
because it was their industries that were being integrated. But an equivalence of the coal and steel
workers to European Citizens on such thin arguments is rather far fetched.
Secondly, during applying the membership dimension on the Rome Treaties, Olsen again confuses
workers and producers as members or citizens, although he himself, as before, states that the
prevailing image is one of a focus on individuals as workers and producers (ibid, p. 47). So by
wrongly applying the membership dimension, Olsen again disproves his own argument.
Thirdly, Olsen analyses preambles of the aforementioned treaties and documents on several occasions.
Unfortunately he only derives speculations and conjectures out them. E.g. the preamble of the free
movement Regulation 1612/68 states that the freedom of movement constitutes a fundamental right of
workers and their families as well as it gives a guarantee for the possibility of improving [the worker
s] living and working conditions and promoting his social advancement (ibid, p. 50). The author
immediately jumps to the conclusion that this is somehow a kind of membership that even relates

Political Changes And Indicators Of Political Risk Essay
3. Political Changes and Indicators of Political Risk in Egypt
As mentioned before, components of political risk index are divided into six sub indicators. This
section examines changes in political risks sub indicators as a response to political changes and the
mutual relationship between the six sub indicators that form political risk index in Egypt.
3.1 Behavior of and Changes in Political Risks Sub Indicators
Figure (1) shows that indicators of political risk have had noticeable changes especially after 25th of
January revolution except for government effectiveness and control of corruption indicators which
stayed at levels 0.5 and 0.33 respectively during the considered period. The following points
summarize the performance of political risks sub indicators as a response to political changes in
Egypt. An indicator with points near to 1 indicates a relatively very low risk indicator, while an
indicator with points near to 0 indicates a relatively very high risk indicator.
The most vulnerable and risky indicator of political risks sub indicators is voice and accountability
indicator, as points awarded to this indicator were always below 0.5 and hence it is always located in
very high risk zone. Prior to 25th of January (from 2006 to 2010), the indicator recorded 0.4 average
points and during revolutions period this average points has been dropped to 0.24. Voice and
accountability indicator recorded average points 0.33 during the whole considered period

  • 2. Cultural Anthropology Essay Cultural Anthropology Almost all cultures world wide have highly developed traditions of music and dance. According to Mari Womack, author of Being Human: An Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, music and dance carry much importance within a culture. As do other artistic forms, music and dance reflect cultural and social organization. Cultural values can be conveyed in the words of a song, and the performance of a song or a dance is dependent on the social context (Womack 226). Music and instruments are of great significance in many places world wide. For example, the BaMbuti foragers from Africa s Ituri rain forest have an instrument which they call the molimo which looks like an extremely long pipe. The men of the BaMbuti ... Marching Band is, in most high schools, on the fringes of society. Those instrument toting kids spend countless hours fine tuning their skills, only to receive little respect from the rest of the students. They are called band nerds. They are laughed at. And yet they persist. But why? Why not give into the mainstream high school culture and join football or cheer leading? Why spend countless hours playing and replaying their parts until their fingers are worn to the bone when they could be watching movies, going on dates, and eating pizza? These were my questions based on my limited knowledge of high school marching bands. So, I decided to use my budding role as anthropologist to find out. My first step was to select a marching band to study. Luckily, the local high school, Goshen High School, has an excellent marching band which has competed at the state level for the last decade. A friend of mine at Goshen College who was a member of the band helped me to contact a current member of the band who could assist me by being my informant. For my informant, I chose a student, Jordan, who is currently involved in the band as a section leader, but has been in several other roles as well. Based on the information you have (or could have), how would you assess the validity of these specifications? What approaches would you use? The current job specifications for the store manager position that is required, by most district managers, at CompTech is that the candidate being considered should have a MBA or at minimum three years experience as store manager. Another suggestion that may work well, I know it has for my organization, it to develop a Management Trainee Program. Some of the current weaknesses that CompTech currently possess is having such a high number of vacancies and they have pretty large amount of turnover. One of their major strengths is that they are willing to train their store managers with a product they have come up with CompTech University (Bernardin, J.H., 2013. Shortly after it was launched, the space shuttle Challenger exploded, killing seven astronauts, including Christa McAuliffe, a New Hampshire schoolteacher chosen to be the first teacher in space ( Challenger Disaster, n.d.). The explosion was caused by a failure of the O rings of the solid rocket boosters. The O rings were unable to seat properly, causing the leaking of hot combustion gases, which burnt through the external fuel tank. The malfunction was not any one person s or organization s fault; it was caused by many factors including the decision to launch despite the cold weather, the poor communication between management levels of the National Aeronautics and ... • 5. Cloud Application Essay The project aims to develop and sustain the necessary tooling that will assist Cloud application lifecycle management operations, using open standards and languages, where appropriate. As aforementioned, these operations are classified into three distinct categories: (1) application description, (2) application deployment and (3) application monitoring. Cloud application management framework (CAMF) will follow the Eclipse OSGi plug in based software architecture for each of the aforementioned operations and will inherit the same look and feel that Eclipse users are accustomed to. To guarantee the quality of the resulting product, the project will follow designated development cycles with rigorous code reviews, unit tests and release cycles (eclipse, ND). INTRODUCTION A cloud application (or cloud application) is an application program that capacities in the cloud, with a few attributes of an immaculate desktop application and a few qualities of an unadulterated Web application. A desktop application lives altogether on a solitary gadget at the client s area (it doesn t essentially need to be a desktop PC). A Web application is put away altogether on a remote server and is conveyed over the Internet through a program interface. Similar to other Eclipse frameworks, CAMF organizes all the files related to a Cloud application in a structured hierarchy that utilizes the Eclipse file system (see Figure 1). I have never experienced pain like the pain that was felt on February 11, 2014. This was the day that my Nana was taken all too soon from this world. Taken from me. But first I shall start at the beginning. Lenore Van Natta was the most giving individual you could ever find. She gave so much to everyone and never expected anything in return. How could she give up when my aunt had another baby on the way. A baby that would never know her grandmother. A baby who would never know the warmth of her hugs. I begged her to stay. I cried at her side begging her to stay so we could make more memories like the ones that she had just told. She refused and told me to stay strong with a smile that I took the wrong way. I was so angry at her. How could she abandon her family? How could she be so greedy to do this? I told her I loved her and walked out of the room in a rage and when I got to the hallway I collapsed in an immense rush of emotions. This competes for the lowest part of my life. The Curse Of Monterone In Act 1 Of Rigoletto The curse of Monterone At the end of scene 1 of act 1 of Giuseppe Verdi s famous opera, Rigoletto, the Duke s hunchbacked court jester (Rigoletto, a baritone) is cursed by Count Monterone (also a baritone); this incident is commonly referred to as the curse of Monterone. The scene goes as follows: the Count of Monterone, furious with the Duke for having seduced his daughter and dishonored his family name, barges into the Duke s extravagant ball seeking revenge and dramatically changing the mood and tone of the scene. Rigoletto, who is ever eager to remain in favor with the Duke, cruelly mocks the Count (which only serves to further enrage him). Interestingly, instead of putting a booming orchestra underneath the deep voices of the Count and Rigoletto, Verdi instead chose to use violins to indicated the intense nervousness of the situation. During this time, bel canto was a reassertion of the emphasis on the voice as the most important expressive element in opera, in distinct contrast to the other popular operatic vocal styles of the time. The Maids Of Honor At first glance, the 17th century paintings of the Baroque period, India, and China may not have much in common, but upon closer inspection there are relationships and divergences to consider beyond the surface. These details can be seen between Bichitr s Jahangir Preferring a Sufi Shaykh to Kings, Wang Hui s A Thousand Peaks and Myriad Ravines, and Diego Velázquez s Las Meninas (The Maids of Honor). While each carries the style of its own location of origin, they all showcase influence and subject matter similarities and differences worth making note of, most specifically the presence of duality in focus within the paintings. The third of the paintings stemming from the Baroque period done by Velázquez is one of his many works for the court, setting the tone in the particular area, while not extending much further (49, Bazin). The court employing Velázquez was that of King Philip IV, with the focus of this painting being the king s daughter. This particular piece has not only the artist himself depicted, the children of the court scattered about, but also a mirror in the back showing the King and Queen standing as the painter is depicted to be painting their portrait. Each point of attention draws way from the former, then pushing to the next in a cycle of focus. Once Velázquez started using almost strictly the style of portraits, he mastered the art using the available means to the fullest. The painting at hand in particular uses his mastery of portraiture to the fullest in varying who is being painted and their positions on the canvas (59 60, Bazin). Each painting draws influence from their individual location of origin, mostly in subject, to appeal to the patrons of the time. While each piece was created within the 17th century, there are obvious differences from place to place in how they were meant to be created. • 10. Poverty In Africa Essay Project Kwanele Although Africa is the second largest continent, one can say poverty is an ever present situation (Abebe and Quaicoe, 2014). Largely due to historical background, social inequalities are the foundation of poverty in Africa. The continent has, for decades, been viewed as the epitome of poverty, with many countries plagued by unemployment, malnutrition, lack of education and limited access to healthcare. The difficulty with this is that poverty then becomes a viscous cycle, passed on from generation to generation, and thus hindering development of these countries. With several countries having gained independence, the development of African countries has been on a steady escalation, even being viewed as a potential for investment by global investors. However it takes more than a change in governance to correct the wrongs of years of social injustices. Abebe and Quaicoe (2014) found that policies in these countries have a major impact on poverty. And this is the reason why policies (particularly those addressing social development) need to be well drafted and well executed to ensure that wealth is evenly distributed, in order to minimise the gap between the rich and the poor. Over and above impeding economic growth, poverty may have detrimental effects that can threaten the survival of a population. An impoverished community lacks nutritious food that is supposed to strengthen one s body to be able to fight off infections and other diseases. The State of Food ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All The Queen s Children Essay Dr. Carole Levin outlines the aspects of Queen Elizabeth I s social perception as mother of her nation and the Virgin Queen in her article All the Queen s Children: Elizabeth I and the Meaning of Motherhood. I agree with Levin s analysis of Elizabeth s use of her public image as a political tool in the examples she gives, and I extend her argument to Elizabeth s speeches and writings. Levin argues that the inflammatory topic of Elizabeth s virginity and rumored children plagued her because she was a powerful woman. Instead of portraying herself as rigid and rejecting marriage entirely, Elizabeth humanizes herself to the public by writing about the pain of a lost love. Revealing her romantic emotions while ultimately never marrying conveys a clear message to her subjects: Elizabeth will only marry if it is beneficial or necessary to them, even if it hurts her heart to refuse. Elizabeth reveals her pain when she does not marry the subject of the poem because it was not in the kingdom s best interest, and plays to stereotypes about women s emotional and romantic nature, supporting Levin s observation of her social ... The political sphere encountered in the daily routines of ancient Greeks and Romans gave influence to the multitude of literary works produced in these societies. The works of Euripides, Virgil, and Ovid gave a vehicle for these writers to infuse commentary about the politics of the day. Politics is how groups of people organize making decisions that affect the individuals contained within said groups. The Bacchae, the Aeneid, and Book 15 of Metamorphoses all contain commentary concerning politics within their content. In Euripides the Bacchae, the city of Thebes is shown to have a system of political inheritance as Pentheus is given control over the city by his grandfather Cadmus, the founder of the city. The god Dionysus is also a grandson of Cadmus, yet is not chosen to be the heir to Thebes, which creates a rivalry between Dionysus and Pentheus. At the University of Texas Health Science Center in 2008 one study showed that non overweight people that consumed more than 21 diet soft drinks per week, containing artificial sweeteners, were almost twice as likely to become overweight or obese (Pavliv, 2012). However, there are also many different types of ideologies that the government controls its people. The people of Cannery Row have created a socialist atmosphere to replace the government that has failed them. Socialism in America began in Chicago IL, June 15 21, 1897. Communism is a very similar ism to socialism. Both are left winged. However, Communism is more similar to Liberalism in the aspect of helping out its own people. In communism the government makes everyone at the same level, no one richer or poorer nor have more pay or less pay. And there is no such thing as private property, government monopolizes with industries. Everyone is an equal and everyone helps each other. This is a revolutionary socialistic concept. The last to understand Socialism is National Socialism. This is Hitler s form of government, also known as Nazism. This form of government is nothing like Cannery Row s government, at all. In National Socialism people are not equal, racist, value of property and race are above equality, and the absence of religion. This ideology is almost the complete opposite of socialism that is running through Cannery Row. It is when cysts develop in the kidney and interferes with the filtering of waste from the blood. There are three cases of PKD, these includes Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD), Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD) and Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease (ACKD). These types of PKD are determined on how and when you get the disease or how prone to it you are. Autosomal Dominant PKD is most common with nearly 90% of people who form PKD, having Autosomal Dominant. This disease is mostly developed later in life between 30 40 years of age therefore is known as adult PKD, in saying this the disease can develop in childhood but it s very rare. When it comes to inheriting ADPKD, it only takes one parent to have the gene of PKD and its 50% likely the child will develop PKD as well, therefore why is it most popular as it only takes one parent not both. ... The Plaza was owned by the aggressive and ambitious Sohel Rana, who exploited his political connections to acquire illegal permits and bribe government officials to get approval construction. He had extra floors built without obtaining the proper permits or approval from the local government authorities. Sohel Rana (like building owners in general) was able to take advantage of the loopholes in the system through his ties to political allies and his wealth. In some, they are the destructive lovers, whose all consuming desire obliterates Troy and costs many great Greek warriors their lives. In others, Helen is the victim of Aphrodite s enchantment and Paris s lust; and in some, Paris is portrayed as a generally weak man who tries to do the right thing, and often fails miserably at it. One of Paris most unpleasant scenes occur when Aphrodite attempts to defend the injured Paris to Helen after Paris flees from his battle with Menelaus: You would not think that he came from fighting against a man; you would think he was going rather to a dance, or rested and had been dancing lately (The Iliad, 127). Although Aphrodite intends this as a compliment, there is no doubt that this is a very condescending view of Paris worth. Despite the fact that he has embarrassed himself and his city by fleeing from battle like a coward, he is reduced even further to his most basic qualities: his looks. This is very demeaning for a character who is already an outsider in his own community; additionally, Paris life has arguably been completely dismantled by his looks. Aphrodite sees Paris through a superficial lens because she is a goddess; she has little concept of human emotion or empathy for Paris humiliation. She truly believes he lives a charmed life because of her and fails to see the darkness and pain that everyone, including Paris, has suffered because of her. Paris now has to return to battle knowing that he will never overcome the shame of failing his people and of bucking under the weight of his cowardice, and she will never understand that burden; she doesn t have to. Comparing Macbeth And Great Expectations There are more than enough examples from Macbeth and Great Expectations to prove that subversion of gender roles, a term that describes someone acting in a way that is not expected from those of their said gender, is evident in both writing pieces. There are a number of connections between the women of the play and novel; this can be seen in their stern, powerful and leader like and always changing personalities that a number of female characters share. For instance, Miss Havisham s burning hatred for men that she implemented into Estella s mind, to Lady Macbeth s level of ambition to have her husband become king. Others include similarities in levels of knowledge, even though they were considered commoners on a part of the social ladder where a lack of knowledge is expected, and examples of how they use their high levels of knowledge to their advantage. This can also be considered evidence of subversion of gender roles; women at the time were not expected to be knowledgeable by society as they are now. Other connections would be based on the topic of visual appearance overall, with connections to how they portray themselves to other characters and the reader throughout. The women of these two works show an exceptionable amount of power, control and capability of holding a family together a number of times throughout the novel and the play. Only a few really know the true answer to this question. Most people around the US simply think that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. The belief is that a lone inventor, Thomas Edison, sat down in his workshop and simply created the incandescent light bulb out of thin air. Edison in no way created the incandescent light bulb out of thin air. He used the knowledge of previous researchers and inventors to make a the first commercialized light bulb and gained world wide recognition as a result. Various frauds are possible when one person handles related activities. These duties must be segregated to multiple personnel. There is also a case in stories where the hero has to be found and is more of the unsung type of character within a story in which that character has to learn how to adjust to the advantages and disadvantages of their heroism and how it may affect the other characters in the story. Heroes are heroes because they show exceptional amounts of courage, and they do it consistently on the everyday basis. That is not possible to do. The extraordinary things that Beowulf and Sir Gowain do are things that the average man would not do because of the lack of courage and confidence. That is why heroes are who they are, the best of the best. They stick out from the crowd and that is why one may feel like they deserve more than just the regular confidence that the average man gets, it is only necessary. Being a hero is more of a mental challenge than anything else, because one has to believe in oneself more than any other person can believe in them because whoever believes in the hero can not possibly know and understand just exactly what the hero is going through. The other characters will never know and understand why the hero faces the problems, defeats the problems, and overcomes the obstacles that the hero faces. All that the characters and the people want in the stories is for whom ever the hero is, they want that person to save them from the people or things that threaten them. In other words, the people do no care so much about what the hero is going through, the people just want the hero to deliver, so it is an absolute must for the hero s confidence to be above the average person. The Rights Of The Global Warming My argument is that those who have taken part in causing global warming, which are the developed countries, should be held responsible by cutting back more than other countries to correct the injustice that they have inflicted on the poorer countries. These nations are infringing on the rights of the victimized nations. Therefore, I would argue that there is an ethical basis for deciding whether some countries should cut back emissions more than others because the situation is not only unfair, but also violates the rights of innocent people. Everyone has a right to life, a right to not be harmed, and more specifically, the right not to have one s life taken directly as a means to further one s end (Finnis). Immanuel Kant thought reason tells us to, Act only on a maxim that you can will to be a universal law (Kant). Under Kantism views, an ethical act is ethical if it can become universal law without undermining some sort of construct. If we say that developed countries can emit greenhouse gases, thus causing harm, without consequence, then it will undermine the principle that the innocent has the right to not be harmed. Therefore, when that right is violated, there is an ethical issue. For example, if a burglar steals, it is only fair that they are reprimanded accordingly by giving back what they stole, plus an additional punishment, to ameliorate the harm that he caused. The exhibition advertised itself as the first major African exhibition in Toronto and aimed to be a critical examination of the relationship between Ontario and Africa at the turn of the century (Burret 2004: p. 127). Through the juxtaposition of provocative colonial imagery and artifacts with critical texts and ironic captions, the exhibition challenges dominant colonial narratives regarding Africa (p. 132). Likewise, mutations, which are changes in DNA, can add genetic variation to a population and create phenotypic changes. If these alterations result in individuals being better suited to their environment, natural selection will select for these traits, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Decline in Water Supply in India Introduction The available water in India has declined drastically over the past several decades due to the rise in demand for water sources across almost every industry. This shortage has greatly affected all activity in India, including the agricultural industry and the available drinking water for domestic life. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, or the FOA, believes that India will literally run out of water if certain steps are not taken to replenish India s aquifers. To fully grasp the matter, an explanation of the problem is below. The main cause for concern is that India s flourishing agricultural industry uses the 91% of water throughout the country leaving aquifers at lower levels every year. ... (http://www.sigmaxi.org/programs/issues/Tancig_Jawitz.pdf) Fluorosis Epidemic in India Fluoride is a geologic material that lies underneath most of India. As water tables decrease, farmers are forced to drill deeper into aquifers to unsafe zones containing dangerous levels of fluoride. In India, the Fluorosis and Rural Development Foundation have estimated that over 60 million people suffer from diseases caused by the overexposure of fluoride in drinking water from underground aquifers. Split in Surface Groundwater Hydrologic Connections With the continued overuse of aquifers, sigmaxi.com states that In the Maheshwaram watershed of Andhra Pradesh chronic depletion of groundwater has lowered the water table 15 m below the ground surface . This causes the streams and springs once fed by groundwater to disappear. Basically, natural tanks that once held water have no way to collect water anymore because the pathways ... • 45. Main Themes In Chinese Cinderella The book Chinese Cinderella, written by Adeline Yen Mah has four main themes. They are: family relationships, abandonment loneliness, self esteem and history. The author Adeline Yen Mah, also wrote the book Falling Leaves but Chinese Cinderella was written for younger audiences. Chinese Cinderella is actually an autobiography, not a fairy tale. Adeline (the protagonist) has to work for her dreams, not by wishing from a fairy godmother. This book was set in the 1900 s (1941 1952). At that time WW2 was happening making Adeline s life harder. The moral of this book would be that no matter your circumstances, you can work hard and achieve your dreams. This book is really captivating and it tells the reader not to underestimate anyone. That s why I think this is an amazing book for everyone to read. There are a range of genres in Chinese Cinderella. They are adventure, drama, and history. The genres change the story from being a fairy tale to a true autobiography. As the book s genres are adventure and history, it does not relate to the fairy tale of Cinderella. Adeline s childhood is harsh and she has to find her own ways without a fairy godmother. At the start of multiple chapters, the year is written and historical events are told, which gives the reader historical knowledge. Another historical scene is when Nai Nai was telling Adeline about her bound feet (page 7 8). There are lots of dramas and adventures that go on in Adeline s world, which relate to the themes. These genres make the book harder to put down. The plot and structure in this autobiography makes the story of Adeline s childhood flow better. The orientation started by Niang marrying Adeline s father. At Adeline s birth her mother died so Adeline was treated badly and unfairly. In the complication, Adeline was unwanted from the start. She was sent away to an orphanage because she was wanted by no one. In the resolution Adeline decided after winning the playwriting competition that she wanted to be a writer. She studied medicine at Oxford University with Third Brother. The reflection is that no matter what your conditions are you can achieve anything like Adeline did. In the story Adeline read a newspaper article that said It was announced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. European Citizenship 1. Summary There have been a lot of contributions by scholars to the widely discussed topic of European citizenship. In his article Espen D.H. Olsen argues in contrast to many others, that the Maastricht Treaty was not year zero in the EU citizenship discourse (Olsen 2008, p. 40). His study deals with the time before the general discussion over the European citizenship started in the 1970s (cf. ibid, p. 41ff.) The article s main finding states that European citizenship has been in existence from the European integration s starting point, the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). Olsen defines his concept of citizenship as a status of individuals in relation to a political unit (ibid, p. 41) which he divides in the four dimensions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 53). That is clearly contradicting to his own finding before and generally seems to be too big of a stretching of his concept. He merely speculates about the status of membership in that case. It can also be argued that the coal and steel workers were of course included in the wording of the contract, because it was their industries that were being integrated. But an equivalence of the coal and steel workers to European Citizens on such thin arguments is rather far fetched. Secondly, during applying the membership dimension on the Rome Treaties, Olsen again confuses workers and producers as members or citizens, although he himself, as before, states that the prevailing image is one of a focus on individuals as workers and producers (ibid, p. 47). So by wrongly applying the membership dimension, Olsen again disproves his own argument. Thirdly, Olsen analyses preambles of the aforementioned treaties and documents on several occasions. Unfortunately he only derives speculations and conjectures out them. E.g. the preamble of the free movement Regulation 1612/68 states that the freedom of movement constitutes a fundamental right of workers and their families as well as it gives a guarantee for the possibility of improving [the worker s] living and working conditions and promoting his social advancement (ibid, p. 50). The author immediately jumps to the conclusion that this is somehow a kind of membership that even relates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
