Group Thinking And Conformity
CONFORMITY
Conformity is changing one s own behaviour as to more closely match the action of others (Ciccarelli
Meyer, 2006). When one start doing what the majority is doing. Conformity can be affected by group
thinking. Group thinking is kind of thinking in which people feel it is more important to maintain the
group s cohesiveness than to consider the facts more realistically (Ciccarelli Meyer, 2006).
Conformity is one of social influence that is investigated by social psychologist, which tries to explain
people s behaviour in following the trend rather than standing out.
The scholars that took the perception of conformity further were Muzafer Sherif and Solomon Asch.
They made several experiments. Asch experiment included seven to

One Of The Most Significant Characteristics Of Tantra
One of the most significant characteristics of TANTRA (origin 5th century CE) is the fact that it does
not require the ordinary householder to renounce the world by giving up our body, our family, our
material possessions, our job, even our pleasures. Instead it accentuates personal experimentation and
experience as a way to improve/advance on the path of Self realization without having to become a
monk or swami. TANTRA breaks new yoga because it was/is available for everyone without any type
of discrimination. TANTRA rejected the classical patriarchal cast system and exclusive Brahmanic
orthodoxy in which only men and higher cast where suitable for the practice. TANTRA is all
inclusive. TANTRA does not exclude social classes, gender, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is through this precious human life and birth that we can free ourselves from ignorance and see how
things really exist. From Sanskrit: TAN = To expand, TRA= tool, instrument. TANTRA can be seen as
a technology or tool for expansion of consciousness and alertness. TANTRA does not reject our
objects of attachment or life conditions, but transforms how we relate to them. This is what makes this
practice so compelling today. For example, our inner attitude towards money doesn t have anything to
do with the money we have. Under TANTRA s view, there is nothing wrong about having money or
enjoying life, or being tall/short, or fat/thin, or being married/single, or being employed/unemployed..,
but whatever the circumstances, the attitude should be of detachment and equanimity, then a sense of
freedom arises. So the world and our conditions become an ally instead of a hindrance in our spiritual
development. In TANTRA there are two realities; SHIVA and SHAKTI, SHIVA representing the total
matter or the absolute and SHAKTI representing the total energy or creative power. In TANTRA all
reality can be divided on what we can see (visvamaya) and what is beyond (visvottirna). To
experience the ultimate reality we need to dissolve the notion of duality in our consciousness. We need
to become one from two.

Syrian Revolution Research Paper
Despite its reputation for almost anarchism like conditions, Syria is a complex country with an
interesting history and government affairs.
The country we know today was not always known as Syria . The beginning is thought to be when
Prince Faisal captured Damascus in 1918. In 1920, France enforces the Sykes Pico treaty, removing
Faisal from power and claiming Syria and surrounding areas. Riots by the citizens wanting to escape
French rule eventually cause their oppressors to withdraw, and after WWII, all of the French were
gone. Michel Aflaq and Salah al Din al Bitar founded the Arab Socialist Baath Party in 1947. This was
disbanded between 1949 1952. Army officers then rebel, bringing back a civilian government and

Concern over the joining of ISIS has also caused extreme measures to be taken, such as banning
burqas because of fears that they will encourage students to join the extremists. Most citizens hate the
government due to the torture of 15 schoolchildren who were writing graffiti on the wall back in 2011,
and the government s reaction to the protests.
Syria is a small country bordered by Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Israel, and Lebanon. The majority of the
Western side of the country is bordered by the Mediterranean sea. Most of the land is dry and dusty,
with gigantic sand dunes and flat terrain due to the Syrian desert covering most of the country.
However, there are oases present. There are two mountain ranges in the 71,998 mile country (which
also has the Euphrates river in its borders): The Anti Lebanon Mountains and abal an Nusayriyah.
Syria s population consists of 230,018,387 individuals as of January 1st of 2015. 35.2% are under 15,
61% are between 15 and 64, and 3.8% are over 64. More than 4 million refugees have fled the country

The History And Political Causes Of The Cold War
The Cold War refers to an era of U.S. history from roughly 1945 to 1990. Although the U.S.S.R. and
the U.S. fought ideological proxy wars in Vietnam, Korea, and Afghanistan, this era is referred to as
the Cold War because the United States and Soviet Union never actually engaged in war themselves.
The origins of the Cold War can be traced back to the finale of World War II. Beginning with the Yalta
Conference, the Allied powers of the Soviet Union, United States, and Great Britain started a
discussion concerning post war foreign policies. Specifically, the political system of Poland became an
important question for the Big Three . Should Poland be allowed to form a democratically elected
government, or should Russia be allowed to occupy Poland and further expand their communist
influence? Essentially, this question and many like it characterized the motivation for the Cold War.
The United States sought to contain communism while the Soviet Union pushed for both land
expansion and political influence across the globe. (CITE) Harry Truman took the office of President
just a few months before the end of World War II. Truman inherited a plethora of dilemmas heading
into the post War World II era, and he decided to take his stance on international affairs in 1947 with
the Truman Doctrine. Essentially, the Truman Doctrine promised that America would personally
intervene in order to insure that democracy would remain secure in foreign governments. This was a
stark contrast from the popular isolationist paradigm of the 20s and 30s. Furthermore, the Truman
Doctrine prompted an unusual act of international involvement when Congress agreed to aid Greek
and Turkish militaries in an effort to counter communist influence in these regions. Additionally,
Truman s handling of the Korean War is another example of his firm stance of containment. Truman
made no qualms about aiding the indigenous troops of South Korea with weapons and troops, but he
did openly reject the notion of meeting either China or the Soviet Union in an open land battle.
Furthermore, Truman fired General Douglas MacArthur based on the general s strong notion to invade
China and reluctance to respect the President s authority. Truman s decisions

My Experience At A Young Age
At a young age I became aware of my passion for people. I spent long summers volunteering at
nursing homes, and working with friends to do constructive projects around the community. During
my teenage years I was well known for my loving spirit and compassion for people. I was a problem
solver and as well the go to person for family and friends. This passion continued throughout my
teenage years, as I volunteered at the Department of Veterans Affairs, assisting disable vets. By the
time of adulthood, my love for people and quest to help had become my profession. While attending

I as well learned that forming trusting relationships with people was imperative for future success. I
recall working in the hospital and being known for my humble spirt an active listening skills. I
discovered that active listening help one to receive the message, understand and evaluate the
information being communicated. In fact, when I interned at the Meridian Bridge House Alcohol and
Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, I learned through active listening and evaluation that trauma
correlates strongly with ones inability to stabilize. People suffering from alcohol and substance abuse
addiction had most likely experienced some form of trauma, which resulted in their alcohol and drug
dependency. There stories alone increased my desire to want to help and bring about change in the
lives of so many. No matter our differences I believed in setting aside my personal beliefs and biases
to help improve the lives of others. I recall an incident where I encountered a client who religion
differed from mines. Although, I wanted to touch more on the topic I knew that my morals and values
were not to be imposed. My primary focus was to help my client realize their potential and help them
reach their goals,
I have acquired many skills that are transferable to the field of social work. In fact, from my
experience at the treatment facility I developed a strong understanding of the need for empowering

Gender Labeling In Society
The environment in which a person grows up in and the people that surround them often times have a
lasting impact on them on who they are as a person and how they interact with others as well as how
they view themselves as. Society often contributes greatly in the way a person identifies themselves
by labeling them as either male or female. This labeling process begins by the time the child is born
and they are given the label of being a boy or a girl based on their appearance. Labels are put upon a
person throughout their entire life, depending on who they are as a person, the way they act, what they
believe in, and the way they interact with others. The role of society in all of this is far greater than
just putting people into certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many labels that make up a person, whether it be gender wise, religion, ethnicity, or
something they are good at, but the ones that stick out the most are the ones that society imposes on
them. As individuals, once we are given a certain label, we start to believe it and begin acting upon it.
Oftentimes it may go to extremity where the individual begins to lose their own identity in attempts to
fulfill a different one. If the individual is told that they are very fashionable, they may start to buy the
latest trends in the fashion industry despite the price just to fulfill this label. Labels may stray from the
individual, but the ones that forever remain are the ones where a well respected individual lays it upon
them. In On Being Sane in Insane Places (1973), David L Rosenhan performs an experiment in which
eight sane people are evaluated and are able to get admitted to a psychiatric ward as pseudopatients.
While in there, they acted the way they normally did but were disregarded by staff members based on
the label that was imposed on them. It took a while for the employees to realize that they were
mentally sane, but because they were admitted as pseudopatients, everything else about them was
disregarded. Once a person is designated abnormal, all of his other behaviors and characteristics are
colored by that label, (1973:54). Rosenhan also says that the labels given by mental health
professionals are just as influential on the patient as they are on their family and friends to the extent
where they eventually begin to accept their diagnosis and behave accordingly to it,

How The Technological And Cultural Impact Of The World...
The Chicago World Fair of 1893, or The World Columbian Exposition , was a watershed event in
American history and influenced many of the technological and cultural changes of the early 20th
century. When establishing whether the Fair was a turning point in American society, one must assess
the extent to which society was changed by the event. Industrially, The World Fair added 200 new
buildings to the city s skyline, including the famous Ferris Wheel. Economically, the fair brought in an
over 1 million dollar surplus for stockholders, making it the standard to which all other fairs would be
compared to. And socially, the fair brought the community together through music and shows and with
inventions like Aunt Jemima s syrup and Juicy Fruit gum. Thus, The World Columbian Expo did, in
fact, influence the 20th century industrially, economically and culturally. The late 19th century was a
time for technological and industrial triumph. Inventions of this time proved so benign that they are
still used to this day. The World s Columbian Exposition channeled this new creative mindset of
people and set it into action on the world s stage. Erik Larson constructs an image of these inventions
as, They (fair goers) saw the first moving pictures on Edison s Kinetoscope, and they watched as
lightning chattered from Nikola Tesla s body. They saw even more ungodly things the first zipper; the
first ever all electric kitchen, which included an automatic dishwasher; and a box purporting

Einsatzgruppen Nicknames
When the Holocaust is mentioned, the first thing people think of is usually the concentration camps or
Hitler. Most people forget about the other tragic events that occurred outside of the camps. More
importantly, they usually identify they blame the wrong people who had committed these crimes. The
Einsatzgruppen had operated in the territories and areas owned by the Germans.
For those who might not understand, I would like to explain who the Einsatzgruppen were. The
Einsatzgruppen had a variety of nicknames that they were called. For instance, they were called the
killing squads and the mobile killing units. The Einsatzgruppen were squads composed primarily of

not read where they took the vans, I am guessing that they traveled from town to town searching for
Jews. There was probably a set number of gas vans that were assigned a certain area to attack so that
they could cover more ground. Two different types of gas vans had been built: a larger one, 5.8 meters
in length, and a smaller one, measuring 4.5 meters (Levine, jewishvirtuallibrary.org) . When densely
packed, the small van could hold 80 to 100 people and the larger van could accommodate between 130

Essay on Comparison of Troy and the Iliad
Wolfgang Peterson tackles the job of bringing the epic of Homer s The Iliad to the big screen in his
film Troy. Iliad being a lengthy text, it is impossible to include every detail in a movie. Therefore,
there are obvious deviations from the book such as the length of the Trojan War, and the absence of
celestial participation in the war. There is also an absence of mortal female characters such as
Chryseis, Hecuba, and Cassandra in the movie. In contrast, though, the female characters who are
included in the film are developed more elaborately than they are in the book.
In The Iliad, the first of many quarrels between Agamemnon and Achilles is ignited by Briseis and
Chryseis. Because Agamemnon is forced to relinquish his prize, ... Show more content on

According to The Iliad, Chryseis is a priestess of Apollo and Briseis is the princess of another land. In
Troy, Briseis is said to be the cousin of Hector and Paris of Troy, who has recently committed herself
to the worship of Apollo. Hecuba, queen of Troy, is never mentioned nor shown in Troy, and neither is
the daughter of the royal family, Cassandra. These two women also do not play vital roles in the book,
however their presence is fairly significant. To make up for their absence, the movie Troy focuses
more on the three female royalties actually portrayed: Briseis, as already mentioned, Andromache,
wife of Hector, and Helen, the cause of the Trojan War. Andromache s character in the movie parallels
her character in the book. She is dedicated to her husband and fears for his safety when he goes out
into battle. And when she realizes that he has died, the world [goes] black as night before her eyes, she
faint[s], falling backward, gasping away her life breath. (Homer, XXII. 547 549) Similarly, in the
movie, Andromache is devastated when Hector dies. Diane Kruger s rendition of Helen in Troy is a bit
unlike Homer s Helen. In the movie, Helen is consistently loving and accepting, and when Paris
cowers from his duel with Menelaus, she remains supportive of him, claiming that he cowers for the
sake of love. In the book, Helen is not so one dimensional and lashes out at him when

The Gift Of Language In Fifteen Dogs By Andre Alexis
In the novel, Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis, Greek gods Hermes and Apollo make a bet that if they
gave any animal the gift of intelligence, the animals would be even more unhappy than humans. In
making this bet, fifteen dogs are granted the gift of intelligence allowing them to be able to
communicate through their own newly formed language and become self aware. At first, the dogs
band together to form a pack, but quickly realize how language complicates their ability to work
together. With the gift of intelligence, the dogs become individuals and think separately rather than
working with a pack mentality. There is no longer harmony between the dogs, but instead a fight for
dominance and a battle of intelligence. We will identify how language eroded the pack through
disagreements and violence as the dogs become aware of their status and differences. The dogs first
run into difficulty with their gift of intelligence when it becomes obvious to them that there are
different levels of comprehension of their ability to communicate using their new language. Prince is a
dog who shows a deeper understanding and love for language compared to the others. We see Alexis
bring this point out in the novel when he says, Prince s words had not been meant as a warning.
Rather, he had been playing. He had been pretending. He had been speaking for speaking s sake.
Could there be a more despicable use for words? (28). Prince, being a very clever and curious dog,

African American Racial Tension
The history in the United States, has created several issues weather it involves, women s rights,
politics, or the wars that Americas have fought in. However, the issue that has caused the most conflict
throughout the years in the United States is racial tension. Racial tension was first created in the
United States, when the citizens of Europe decided that they no longer wished to do their own labor,
and instead they went to Africa and stole and enslaved the individuals of that country. However, after
several years of despicable events, the Africans who were enslaved were now free by law. Converting

The rioters could not be controlled. Throughout the riots, majority of the attacks were being caused by
white civilians, who were forming mobs of fifty plus members to go around town and torment or kill
black civilians. These mobs were assaulting the blacks in the community by stabbing them, shooting
them, or beating them up. And a lot of the violence that these mobs were causing usually resulted in
the death of several blacks. The blood that was shed, only increased the violence and anger throughout
the city of Chicago. This created an engagement for the black communities to begin to attack the white
community members back, harming them as well. Near the end of the five days of the riot,
approximately 500 Chicagoans of both races were injured. Leaving 16 blacks, and 15 whites dead.
The riots in Chicago in 1919, should not have come as a surprise in Americas history. This is due to
the racial violence and racial tension between blacks and whites that has occurred throughout the
years. The race riot in Chicago was not the only riot that had taken place in America. In fact, there
were 26 total race riots throughout the United States. For instance, during the 1800s there were race
riots in New York, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Philadelphia just to name a few. These riots were said to be
triggered by the interracial labor conflict. Since African Americans wanted better lives for themselves

Muslim Immigrants And Secularism In France
Since its inception, the followers of Islam have grown exponentially, spreading the religion s ideals
across the world. Today, Islam is one of the most significant religions in the world by attracting
millions of followers who continue to adhere to the ancient practices outlined in the Qur an.
Unfortunately, these practices are often looked down upon by non Muslim people and considered to
be symbolic of terrorism or of the fundamentalist side of the religion. This instance can be observed
largely in France as a result of secularism that has been deeply rooted in the country for generations.
The most controversial practice of Islam today is Islamic dress. Women who wear head coverings like
hijabs, burqas, and niqabs as a way to bring them closer to god are viewed as unwilling to integrate

immigrants are a danger to French secularism. Although the Muslim population has expanded and
rooted itself into French society, many native French citizens believe that Muslim immigrants cannot
truly be considered French. This opinion is false, however, seeing as thousands of Muslim immigrants
still identify as French citizens while observing Islamic traditions. Despite the numerous attempts to

Lack Of Reason In Lord Of The Flies, By William Golding
Lack of Reason and Increasing Savagery
Human nature is complex, filled with unpredictability and flaws. As seen in Lord of the Flies, by
William Golding, the darker side of humanity is revealed in times of survival and conflict. Throughout
the novel, the boys on the island become increasingly barbaric and violent when they are faced with
dire situations. Through the escalating tension surrounding the symbolic nature of Piggy s glasses and
its representation of the boys rationality, William Golding conveys the message that lack of reason
brings out the innate savage side of human nature.
Piggy s glasses are symbolic of the boys humane side and their reason. At the start of the novel, the
boys on the island seem to be pleasant people and they understand the importance of starting a signal
fire to be rescued. The boys are rational and are fighting for survival. The glasses are still in tact; they
are going to be used to help the boys create a signal fire. Ralph speaks to the boys, exclaiming His
specs use them as burning glasses! (Golding 40), showing that they want to return to society because
they are using their resources at hand to start a fire and be rescued. They still have reason due to the
fact they try to send a signal for rescue and would rather be rescued than accept a new life on the
island. The glasses are in one piece, symbolizing their rationality is present and held together at the
beginning of their journey. The low tension is among the boys and who

The Black Plague was the worst pandemic in history, wiping out nearly a third of the population of
Europe during the 13th century, but it can also be considered a turning point of history. The Black
Plague caused a ripple effect that had a hand in the change of societal construct, religion, the arts, and
medicine.
Societal Hierarchy
During the High Middle Ages, Feudalism and the Societal Hierarchy was the social construct of the
land. In that time period only 10% of peasants were actually free men, the rest were under the social
class of serfs. Europe was becoming overpopulated due to periods of peace and prosperity, making it
incredibly convenient for cheap labor. Working for the lords of the land, Serfs were very much close
to slaves, but this all changed during the 1350s. The population began to decline due to mass
starvation caused by poor harvest, throughout parts of Europe. Increased warfare also contributed to
decline in population, such as Hundred Years War. Perhaps the most detrimental of all this is, the black
plague, which began to wreak havoc in Europe around 1348. The Black Plague, Black Death , was a
disease that civilization had no answer to. The massive deaths of the population caused the feudal
lords to face severe labor shortages, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

science were highlighted by the Black Plague, it caused people to change their focus. People became

Ky-Nos Castle Analysis
The Hauntings of Craig Y Nos Castle in Wales
By Claire Barrand
Craig Y Nos Castle which in Welsh, means Rock of the Night, Maintains a reputation as the Most
Haunted Castle in Wales, having been visited by Most Haunted, alongside numerous other TV shows
which have also filmed at the castle. My sister Linzi and I have investigated this location together
twice and have not been disappointed, in fact, we would have to say this location is in our top three for
paranormal activity!
The Early Years
The history itself is epic enough to inspire a Hollywood feature film. The story begins in 1840 when
the neo gothic castle, set beside the River Tawe on the edge of the breathtaking Brecon Beacons, was
built by an ambitious Captain Rice Davies. Using local limestone to form the impressive structure he
got carried away with turrets and pyramids and ran out of money being unable to complete the north
wing before moving in in 1843 to begin his life as a country gentleman.
Davies became a county magistrate and a High Sheriff of Brecknock. However, rumours of a curse on
the family spread as misfortune fell upon the family when his younger son died of cholera in 1851,
and he lost both his wife and his daughter to illness before he died in 1862.
Two years later, his Davies son died in a hunting accident on the Isle of Wight. Sarah, the eldest
daughter, and her husband Captain Allaway lived at the castle after his death, until disaster struck once
more and the Captain also died a few years later. His widow relocated to Tenby, and the property sold
in 1875 76, purchased by the Morgan family of Abercrave for £6000.
The Adelina Patti Years
In 1878, the castle and its setting attracted the attentions of the leading opera star of that day Italian
Adelina Patti, who announced that she had found the home of her dreams and an offer of £3500
accepted for the castle and surrounding parkland.
A demanding soprano with a colourful private life, she was said to have had numerous affairs
including one with the tenor Mario. The prima donna was the at the peak of her spectacular career and
desired to spend the rest of her life at Craig y nos. She built an incredible private theatre which held
150 people in which she entertained her

Still Tell The Truth Analysis
Lies, they re everywhere, are they worth the trouble? Throughout these three articles, It s the truth ,
Honestly tell the truth , and Rejecting all lies , the authors precisely analyze who agrees, and who
doesn t agree with lying, and why. Lying may be the first thing to come to mind when in a bad
situation, but does anyone realize how much damage it can cause towards the other person or to the
liar themselves?
Consequences and stress are a common outcome of lies, yet people still commit them to deliberately

are intended to keep another s feelings from being hurt, and in the end cause even more damage.

s ok to not tell the truth to cover someone s feelings or to keep someone from being hurt mentally
and/or physically. However in the long run, they may think it s for the better but are still blatantly
lying and could possibly cause even more damage than intended. Apparently even white lies are
acceptable, even necessary. Everyone tells a white lie here and there, and if they re lucky it won t
affect anyone, but why should it be risked? Just because we color code a lie doesn t makes it kind of

a white lie anymore. Others who say it s justified, have a different opinion on lying, but as a question,
why should we lie when honesty is an option?Everyday people hear others lie and see how bad the

Abstract How has theatre reflected social issues throughout time? This reflection can be seen in works
such as Frank Wedekind s Spring Awakening, Jonathan Larson s Rent, and Moisés Kaufman s The
Laramie Project. Spanning from 1891 to 2000, each reflects a social issue regarding sexual education
and acceptance over time. Wedekind s deals with the lack of sexual education and sexually oppressive
culture of the 1800 s, Larson s illustrates with the effects of the AIDS crisis, and Kaufman s ... Show

The piece itself takes interviews of those from the town of Laramie and brings their voices on the
tragedy to light, showing the deeper impact of a hate crime like this to the forefront. The goal of the
play is to illustrate the pain associated with acts of hate such as this and the wrongdoing that occurred
in order to prevent other events like the tragedy surrounding Matthew Shepard. This is a social issue
still relevant to this day, with many in the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex,

Sundiata Character Analysis
What makes a man worthy to be honorable? Is his greatness something earned through struggle or just
a title that has been passed down? It is the man Sundiata is destined to have been, the greatest king, as
he is portrayed in D.T Niane s classic tale Sundiata: an epic of old Mali. This classic tale shows the
impact of courage, power, and motherly love on the life of the ancient africans kingdom s greatest
king. D.T Niane s shows the life of a man once being looked down upon, to now being known as one
of the greatest in history.
Courage or the act of being courageous is something that can depict if a person is being weak. This act
ties into the classic tale when identifying the strength it took Sundiata to walk. Sundiata was at an age
where other young boys were gathering objects for their mothers and he simply could not, due to the
fact that he was unable to walk. However, In a great effort he straightened up and was on his feet at
one go, but the great bar of iron was twisted and had taken the form of a bow. (Page 21) A boy who
once couldn t walk was now walking. He who once had to depend on his mother can now be the one
his mother depends on. Thus, When Sogolon saw her son standing she stood dumb for a moment, then
suddenly she sang these words of thanks to god who had given her son the use of his legs . (Page 21)
Sogolon was so discouraged to the point where the sight of her son s slow development became an
embarrassment. She soon became joyful of the courage

Tacitus Pessimism In Thrasea
It is easy to see the pessimism in Tacitus s Annals. Repeated descriptions of hypocritical, violent, and
corrupt action seem to indicate Tacitus s view that this was a wholly unjust period of Roman history.
However, Tacitus is not so unilateral. Subtly he places characters and situations that invoke hope for
the future. In examining Tacitus s treatment of Thrasea, we can understand some of this reticent yet
tenacious hope. Looking at Thrasea, we can see hope for Justice on two connecting fronts. First,
Tacitus s favorable opinion of Thrasea demonstrated through his narration of events provides an
example of what Tacitus values in the midst of tyranny. These values of moderation and virtue also
include steadfastly opposing Nero, at times, showing that even in an unjust era resistance is still
possible. Second, Thrasea s advise and actions give us hope in a future generation that will carry on
past these troubling times and will hopefully follow Thrasea s example. Through these two lenses of
examining Thrasea, we can see Tacitus s hope. Thrasea is a reoccurring ... Show more content on

While at first he is reticent about Thrasea s radicalism because of its ineffectiveness, he later retracts
this judgment and calls Thrasea s careful actions against Nero virtuous. But, this alone does not
immediately appear to point towards hope. While Thrasea may have been a virtuous character that
stood up against Nero s tyranny, he does not survive. Just like so many before him, he is killed based
upon Nero s grudge rather than any true Justice. How does this promote optimism? The answer lies
not in Thrasea himself, but in his actions. The hope in Thrasea s case does not come only from his
own story, but from the advice he gives to the youth around him as he is about to die. This advice
provides a philosophy for enduring the hardships of Nero that deeply resonates at the end of the

The Moral Principles Of The American Counseling Association
The moral principles upon which the Ethical Standards of the American Counseling Association are
based is a critical part of knowledge as counselors we must possess. Counselors are often faced with
situations where their ethical morale is tested and they must know how to assure they will make an
ethical decision. There will be situations where it is difficult to identify the problem and being aware
of these principles will guide professional counselors towards an ethical practice.
According to Forester Miller and Davis (1996) the principles, autonomy, the respect for independence
like freedom of choice and action, justice, treating each person according to their needs, beneficence,
to be good and a proactive counselor, to always contribute to the welfare of the clients, non
maleficence, not causing harm to others, this principle is considered one of the most important and
fidelity, taking care of client counselor relationship, being loyal and honoring commitments in the
therapeutic relationship. Those are the five principles that are valuable in ethical decision making,
veracity, dealing truthfully with therapeutic clients, is another principle that is listed in the American
Counseling Association code of ethics updated in 2014. These principles previously mentioned are the
base in ethical decision making, they are interdependent of each other and are of extremely
importance to a healthy counseling relationship.

Ways Hartley and Frayn present Childhood in The...
In the Go Between, Hartley presents the world of children and childhood through the first person
narrative (from the viewpoints of the young and old Leo), Leo s vivid imagination, the themes of
growing up and self awareness, the conflict between the child and adult world, and the portrayal of
Leo as a school boy. Firstly, the writer portrays the world of children through the first person narrative
which encapsulates young Leo s fresh, spontaneous optimism and hope towards the dawning of a new
era, My dreams for the twentieth century, and for myself, were coming true (Chapter 1. p. 28).
Therefore, this device allows the reader direct access to the intensity yet simplicity of a child s point of

p. 82). Therefore, the adult narrator s ability to comment and reflect on his child self effectively
emphasizes the naïve and vulnerable nature of youth, and contributes to the mood of foreboding and
suspense throughout the novel, now I was over confident. I expected things to go my way (Chapter 1.
p. 28). In addition, the two voices in the narrative illustrate the contrasting perceptions of childhood
and maturity as we can see that the younger Leo simply believes if he went away...the relationship
between Ted and Marian would cease (Chapter 16. p. 182), whereas the elder Leo is able to analyse
his feelings, I thought I knew what was best for myself...I was shaken and frightened (Chapter 16. p.
183). Consequently, the first person narrative in the past tense effectively conveys a sense of the adult
narrator carefully exploring his conscious in a philosophical manner, whereas child narrator s naïve
attitude is portrayed in his black and white perception of the crisis, believing that he is solely to blame
for the blossoming of the lovers affair, I had attacked them first (Chapter 16. p. 182). Thus, the reader
feels a certain degree of sympathy towards Leo s predicament as he possesses a common child like
sense of misguided responsibility. However, it is evident that he is merely facilitating the relationship
between Ted and Marian. Nevertheless, the writer also presents Leo as somewhat egocentric as he sees

The Issue Of The United States ( U.s. )
I. Explanation of Issues What is the main problem/question at issue in this article? The main problem
at issue in the article is that the United States (U.S.), as a country, are still largely employing the Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) to measure the welfare of the nation although the welfare of a nation can
scarcely be inferred from a measurement of national income. What are some of the subsidiary,
embebbed, or implicit aspects of the problem, and what are their relationship to each other? There are
also other aspects to the problem. These aspects include: (1) the Congress did not heed Simon Kuznets
s warning about how little GDP is connected to welfare of the nation; (2) Americans only came to
know more about limitations of the GDP in measuring their well being after Great Recession; and (3)
there is the emergence of a suggestion to implement alternative measures that more accurately reflect
the progress of human well being. These aspects are related to one another. The Congress s initial
ignorance led to the eventual late discovery about how the GDP has its limits. This in turn led to the
creation of or debate for other measures of welfare. This shows how the movement for alternative
measures to human well being is being triggered. This would then introduce the idea of including
more factors other than national income into the measurement of well being. For instance, according
to Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), the well being of individuals is comprised of economic,

Analysis Of Unam Sanctam By Pope Boniface Viii
Unam Sanctam This work is authored by Pope Boniface VIII from a rough timespan of 1294 1303.
Boniface s affirmation that there is only one holy and catholic and apostolic Church serves as the main
theme of this piece because it is directed toward the king of France. If one is to be called Christian and
truly be one of Christ s flock, one must subject oneself to the Roman pope because he is the legitimate
pope, being one of Peter s successors. Furthermore, there is no salvation outside of this Church. Pastor
Aeternus Pope Leo X writes this piece in order to reinforce what Pope Boniface VIII says in Unam
Sanctam. More specifically, Leo X is attempting to restate the power that the pope possesses. He
agrees with Boniface VIII s belief that it is necessary to submit oneself to the pope of Rome in order
to reach salvation. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Penance is already a common practice in working for the remission of sins at this time, but Sixtus IV
encourages Christians to think of their loved ones who have already passed away and are in the
process of being cleansed of their remaining sins so that they may reach heaven. He also proposes that
Christians give a fixed amount of money as indulgences over a span of ten years in order to help speed
up the cleansing process in purgatory that their friends and family are experiencing. Instructio
Summaria Albert of Mainz, who composes this procedure guide or around the time of Martin Luther,
takes indulgences a step further by systemizing it. For example, he divides indulgences into multiple
categories for a variety of the Church congregation so that they all may give, despite the differences in
their means. These categories include the plenary remission of sins, the confessional, participation in
blessings of the universal Church, and the plenary remission of sins for those who are currently in

Ralph Ellison and Stereotypes Essay
Stereotyping is a normal part of every one s life. Humans, by nature, classify things. We name animals
and classify them by common characteristics but stereotyping can have negative repercussions, and
everyone does it. In a recent study it was proven that everyone has an unconscious need to stereotype
(Paul). In Junteenth and The Invisible man, Ralph Ellison argues that stereotyping can cause mayhem
by making the people become something they are not.
People are forced to by society s views to be something they are not. The Invisible man is forced by
society to be a well mannered boy, even after they treated him like black trash calling him things like

People become what society wants them to be. In Juneteenth Bliss conforms for this older, and in his
eyes wiser, man who has raised him as his own. He even becomes a preacher under Hickman, and
assists hickman in church services, if he wants to or not. There are things that Bliss wants to do but he
doesn t because Hickman has taught him not to. For an example, he wants to go to the movies but
Hickmans theory is that when people watch movies they lose touch with who they are supposed to be,
Bliss. (Juneteenth p.223) The ironic part of this line is that Hickman is telling Bliss he is going to lose
himself if he doesn t listen, and conform to what he is saying, which makes him lose himself entirely.
Bliss even becomes so brainwashed by Hickman that he preached about how the white man has
stopped them, and him from doing things and taking away their rights making them feel Eyeless,
tongueless, drumless, danceless, hornless, songless (Juneteenth p.123), while he is/will be a white
man. Hickman makes Bliss into what he believes to be the perfect person but he makes Bliss into
something he did not want to be. In The Invisible Man, the invisible man conforms to society all
throughout the book he had been conforming to society from the very beginning, he goes to college
because he is told that that is where he should be, his grandfather s words haunted him, following him

  • 2. Group Thinking And Conformity CONFORMITY Conformity is changing one s own behaviour as to more closely match the action of others (Ciccarelli Meyer, 2006). When one start doing what the majority is doing. Conformity can be affected by group thinking. Group thinking is kind of thinking in which people feel it is more important to maintain the group s cohesiveness than to consider the facts more realistically (Ciccarelli Meyer, 2006). Conformity is one of social influence that is investigated by social psychologist, which tries to explain people s behaviour in following the trend rather than standing out. • 3. One Of The Most Significant Characteristics Of Tantra One of the most significant characteristics of TANTRA (origin 5th century CE) is the fact that it does not require the ordinary householder to renounce the world by giving up our body, our family, our material possessions, our job, even our pleasures. Instead it accentuates personal experimentation and experience as a way to improve/advance on the path of Self realization without having to become a monk or swami. TANTRA breaks new yoga because it was/is available for everyone without any type of discrimination. TANTRA rejected the classical patriarchal cast system and exclusive Brahmanic orthodoxy in which only men and higher cast where suitable for the practice. TANTRA is all inclusive. TANTRA does not exclude social classes, gender, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is through this precious human life and birth that we can free ourselves from ignorance and see how things really exist. From Sanskrit: TAN = To expand, TRA= tool, instrument. TANTRA can be seen as a technology or tool for expansion of consciousness and alertness. TANTRA does not reject our objects of attachment or life conditions, but transforms how we relate to them. This is what makes this practice so compelling today. For example, our inner attitude towards money doesn t have anything to do with the money we have. Under TANTRA s view, there is nothing wrong about having money or enjoying life, or being tall/short, or fat/thin, or being married/single, or being employed/unemployed.., but whatever the circumstances, the attitude should be of detachment and equanimity, then a sense of freedom arises. So the world and our conditions become an ally instead of a hindrance in our spiritual development. In TANTRA there are two realities; SHIVA and SHAKTI, SHIVA representing the total matter or the absolute and SHAKTI representing the total energy or creative power. In TANTRA all reality can be divided on what we can see (visvamaya) and what is beyond (visvottirna). To experience the ultimate reality we need to dissolve the notion of duality in our consciousness. We need to become one from two. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Syrian Revolution Research Paper Despite its reputation for almost anarchism like conditions, Syria is a complex country with an interesting history and government affairs. The country we know today was not always known as Syria . The beginning is thought to be when Prince Faisal captured Damascus in 1918. In 1920, France enforces the Sykes Pico treaty, removing Faisal from power and claiming Syria and surrounding areas. Riots by the citizens wanting to escape French rule eventually cause their oppressors to withdraw, and after WWII, all of the French were gone. Michel Aflaq and Salah al Din al Bitar founded the Arab Socialist Baath Party in 1947. This was disbanded between 1949 1952. Most citizens hate the government due to the torture of 15 schoolchildren who were writing graffiti on the wall back in 2011, and the government s reaction to the protests. Syria is a small country bordered by Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Israel, and Lebanon. The majority of the Western side of the country is bordered by the Mediterranean sea. Most of the land is dry and dusty, with gigantic sand dunes and flat terrain due to the Syrian desert covering most of the country. However, there are oases present. • 6. The History And Political Causes Of The Cold War The Cold War refers to an era of U.S. history from roughly 1945 to 1990. Although the U.S.S.R. and the U.S. fought ideological proxy wars in Vietnam, Korea, and Afghanistan, this era is referred to as the Cold War because the United States and Soviet Union never actually engaged in war themselves. The origins of the Cold War can be traced back to the finale of World War II. Beginning with the Yalta Conference, the Allied powers of the Soviet Union, United States, and Great Britain started a discussion concerning post war foreign policies. Specifically, the political system of Poland became an important question for the Big Three . Should Poland be allowed to form a democratically elected government, or should Russia be allowed to occupy Poland and further expand their communist influence? Essentially, this question and many like it characterized the motivation for the Cold War. The United States sought to contain communism while the Soviet Union pushed for both land expansion and political influence across the globe. (CITE) Harry Truman took the office of President just a few months before the end of World War II. Truman inherited a plethora of dilemmas heading into the post War World II era, and he decided to take his stance on international affairs in 1947 with the Truman Doctrine. Essentially, the Truman Doctrine promised that America would personally intervene in order to insure that democracy would remain secure in foreign governments. This was a stark contrast from the popular isolationist paradigm of the 20s and 30s. Furthermore, the Truman Doctrine prompted an unusual act of international involvement when Congress agreed to aid Greek and Turkish militaries in an effort to counter communist influence in these regions. Additionally, Truman s handling of the Korean War is another example of his firm stance of containment. Truman made no qualms about aiding the indigenous troops of South Korea with weapons and troops, but he did openly reject the notion of meeting either China or the Soviet Union in an open land battle. Furthermore, Truman fired General Douglas MacArthur based on the general s strong notion to invade China and reluctance to respect the President s authority. Truman s decisions ... • 7. My Experience At A Young Age At a young age I became aware of my passion for people. I spent long summers volunteering at nursing homes, and working with friends to do constructive projects around the community. During my teenage years I was well known for my loving spirit and compassion for people. I was a problem solver and as well the go to person for family and friends. This passion continued throughout my teenage years, as I volunteered at the Department of Veterans Affairs, assisting disable vets. By the time of adulthood, my love for people and quest to help had become my profession. While attending Santa FE College, I obtained my Certified Nursing Assistance Licenses, which allowed me to assist people on a more skilled level. However, I am now seeking the ... I recall working in the hospital and being known for my humble spirt an active listening skills. I discovered that active listening help one to receive the message, understand and evaluate the information being communicated. In fact, when I interned at the Meridian Bridge House Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, I learned through active listening and evaluation that trauma correlates strongly with ones inability to stabilize. People suffering from alcohol and substance abuse addiction had most likely experienced some form of trauma, which resulted in their alcohol and drug dependency. There stories alone increased my desire to want to help and bring about change in the lives of so many. No matter our differences I believed in setting aside my personal beliefs and biases to help improve the lives of others. Gender Labeling In Society The environment in which a person grows up in and the people that surround them often times have a lasting impact on them on who they are as a person and how they interact with others as well as how they view themselves as. Society often contributes greatly in the way a person identifies themselves by labeling them as either male or female. This labeling process begins by the time the child is born and they are given the label of being a boy or a girl based on their appearance. Labels are put upon a person throughout their entire life, depending on who they are as a person, the way they act, what they believe in, and the way they interact with others. There are many labels that make up a person, whether it be gender wise, religion, ethnicity, or something they are good at, but the ones that stick out the most are the ones that society imposes on them. As individuals, once we are given a certain label, we start to believe it and begin acting upon it. Oftentimes it may go to extremity where the individual begins to lose their own identity in attempts to fulfill a different one. If the individual is told that they are very fashionable, they may start to buy the latest trends in the fashion industry despite the price just to fulfill this label. Labels may stray from the individual, but the ones that forever remain are the ones where a well respected individual lays it upon them. In On Being Sane in Insane Places (1973), David L Rosenhan performs an experiment in which eight sane people are evaluated and are able to get admitted to a psychiatric ward as pseudopatients. While in there, they acted the way they normally did but were disregarded by staff members based on the label that was imposed on them. It took a while for the employees to realize that they were mentally sane, but because they were admitted as pseudopatients, everything else about them was disregarded. Once a person is designated abnormal, all of his other behaviors and characteristics are colored by that label, (1973:54). Rosenhan also says that the labels given by mental health professionals are just as influential on the patient as they are on their family and friends to the extent where they eventually begin to accept their diagnosis and behave accordingly to it, ... • 9. How The Technological And Cultural Impact Of The World... The Chicago World Fair of 1893, or The World Columbian Exposition , was a watershed event in American history and influenced many of the technological and cultural changes of the early 20th century. When establishing whether the Fair was a turning point in American society, one must assess the extent to which society was changed by the event. Industrially, The World Fair added 200 new buildings to the city s skyline, including the famous Ferris Wheel. Economically, the fair brought in an over 1 million dollar surplus for stockholders, making it the standard to which all other fairs would be compared to. And socially, the fair brought the community together through music and shows and with inventions like Aunt Jemima s syrup and Juicy Fruit gum. Thus, The World Columbian Expo did, in fact, influence the 20th century industrially, economically and culturally. The late 19th century was a time for technological and industrial triumph. Inventions of this time proved so benign that they are still used to this day. The World s Columbian Exposition channeled this new creative mindset of people and set it into action on the world s stage. Erik Larson constructs an image of these inventions as, They (fair goers) saw the first moving pictures on Edison s Kinetoscope, and they watched as lightning chattered from Nikola Tesla s body. • 12. Essay on Comparison of Troy and the Iliad Wolfgang Peterson tackles the job of bringing the epic of Homer s The Iliad to the big screen in his film Troy. Iliad being a lengthy text, it is impossible to include every detail in a movie. Therefore, there are obvious deviations from the book such as the length of the Trojan War, and the absence of celestial participation in the war. There is also an absence of mortal female characters such as Chryseis, Hecuba, and Cassandra in the movie. In contrast, though, the female characters who are included in the film are developed more elaborately than they are in the book. In The Iliad, the first of many quarrels between Agamemnon and Achilles is ignited by Briseis and Chryseis. Because Agamemnon is forced to relinquish his prize, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to The Iliad, Chryseis is a priestess of Apollo and Briseis is the princess of another land. In Troy, Briseis is said to be the cousin of Hector and Paris of Troy, who has recently committed herself to the worship of Apollo. Hecuba, queen of Troy, is never mentioned nor shown in Troy, and neither is the daughter of the royal family, Cassandra. These two women also do not play vital roles in the book, however their presence is fairly significant. To make up for their absence, the movie Troy focuses more on the three female royalties actually portrayed: Briseis, as already mentioned, Andromache, wife of Hector, and Helen, the cause of the Trojan War. Andromache s character in the movie parallels her character in the book. She is dedicated to her husband and fears for his safety when he goes out into battle. And when she realizes that he has died, the world [goes] black as night before her eyes, she faint[s], falling backward, gasping away her life breath. (Homer, XXII. 547 549) Similarly, in the movie, Andromache is devastated when Hector dies. Diane Kruger s rendition of Helen in Troy is a bit unlike Homer s Helen. The Gift Of Language In Fifteen Dogs By Andre Alexis In the novel, Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis, Greek gods Hermes and Apollo make a bet that if they gave any animal the gift of intelligence, the animals would be even more unhappy than humans. In making this bet, fifteen dogs are granted the gift of intelligence allowing them to be able to communicate through their own newly formed language and become self aware. At first, the dogs band together to form a pack, but quickly realize how language complicates their ability to work together. With the gift of intelligence, the dogs become individuals and think separately rather than working with a pack mentality. There is no longer harmony between the dogs, but instead a fight for dominance and a battle of intelligence. We will identify how language eroded the pack through disagreements and violence as the dogs become aware of their status and differences. The dogs first run into difficulty with their gift of intelligence when it becomes obvious to them that there are different levels of comprehension of their ability to communicate using their new language. Prince is a dog who shows a deeper understanding and love for language compared to the others. We see Alexis bring this point out in the novel when he says, Prince s words had not been meant as a warning. Rather, he had been playing. He had been pretending. • 27. Tacitus Pessimism In Thrasea It is easy to see the pessimism in Tacitus s Annals. Repeated descriptions of hypocritical, violent, and corrupt action seem to indicate Tacitus s view that this was a wholly unjust period of Roman history. However, Tacitus is not so unilateral. Subtly he places characters and situations that invoke hope for the future. In examining Tacitus s treatment of Thrasea, we can understand some of this reticent yet tenacious hope. Looking at Thrasea, we can see hope for Justice on two connecting fronts. First, Tacitus s favorable opinion of Thrasea demonstrated through his narration of events provides an example of what Tacitus values in the midst of tyranny. These values of moderation and virtue also include steadfastly opposing Nero, at times, showing that even in an unjust era resistance is still possible. Second, Thrasea s advise and actions give us hope in a future generation that will carry on past these troubling times and will hopefully follow Thrasea s example. Through these two lenses of examining Thrasea, we can see Tacitus s hope. Thrasea is a reoccurring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While at first he is reticent about Thrasea s radicalism because of its ineffectiveness, he later retracts this judgment and calls Thrasea s careful actions against Nero virtuous. But, this alone does not immediately appear to point towards hope. While Thrasea may have been a virtuous character that stood up against Nero s tyranny, he does not survive. Just like so many before him, he is killed based upon Nero s grudge rather than any true Justice. How does this promote optimism? The answer lies not in Thrasea himself, but in his actions. The hope in Thrasea s case does not come only from his own story, but from the advice he gives to the youth around him as he is about to die. This advice provides a philosophy for enduring the hardships of Nero that deeply resonates at the end of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Ways Hartley and Frayn present Childhood in The... In the Go Between, Hartley presents the world of children and childhood through the first person narrative (from the viewpoints of the young and old Leo), Leo s vivid imagination, the themes of growing up and self awareness, the conflict between the child and adult world, and the portrayal of Leo as a school boy. Firstly, the writer portrays the world of children through the first person narrative which encapsulates young Leo s fresh, spontaneous optimism and hope towards the dawning of a new era, My dreams for the twentieth century, and for myself, were coming true (Chapter 1. p. 28). Therefore, this device allows the reader direct access to the intensity yet simplicity of a child s point of view and enhances Leo s personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... p. 82). Therefore, the adult narrator s ability to comment and reflect on his child self effectively emphasizes the naïve and vulnerable nature of youth, and contributes to the mood of foreboding and suspense throughout the novel, now I was over confident. I expected things to go my way (Chapter 1. p. 28). In addition, the two voices in the narrative illustrate the contrasting perceptions of childhood and maturity as we can see that the younger Leo simply believes if he went away...the relationship between Ted and Marian would cease (Chapter 16. p. 182), whereas the elder Leo is able to analyse his feelings, I thought I knew what was best for myself...I was shaken and frightened (Chapter 16. p. 183). Consequently, the first person narrative in the past tense effectively conveys a sense of the adult narrator carefully exploring his conscious in a philosophical manner, whereas child narrator s naïve attitude is portrayed in his black and white perception of the crisis, believing that he is solely to blame for the blossoming of the lovers affair, I had attacked them first (Chapter 16. p. 182). Thus, the reader feels a certain degree of sympathy towards Leo s predicament as he possesses a common child like sense of misguided responsibility. However, it is evident that he is merely facilitating the relationship between Ted and Marian. Nevertheless, the writer also presents Leo as somewhat egocentric as he sees ... • 33. The Issue Of The United States ( U.s. ) I. Explanation of Issues What is the main problem/question at issue in this article? The main problem at issue in the article is that the United States (U.S.), as a country, are still largely employing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to measure the welfare of the nation although the welfare of a nation can scarcely be inferred from a measurement of national income. What are some of the subsidiary, embebbed, or implicit aspects of the problem, and what are their relationship to each other? There are also other aspects to the problem. These aspects include: (1) the Congress did not heed Simon Kuznets s warning about how little GDP is connected to welfare of the nation; (2) Americans only came to know more about limitations of the GDP in measuring their well being after Great Recession; and (3) there is the emergence of a suggestion to implement alternative measures that more accurately reflect the progress of human well being. These aspects are related to one another. The Congress s initial ignorance led to the eventual late discovery about how the GDP has its limits. This in turn led to the creation of or debate for other measures of welfare. This shows how the movement for alternative measures to human well being is being triggered. This would then introduce the idea of including more factors other than national income into the measurement of well being. For instance, according to Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), the well being of individuals is comprised of economic, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Analysis Of Unam Sanctam By Pope Boniface Viii Unam Sanctam This work is authored by Pope Boniface VIII from a rough timespan of 1294 1303. Boniface s affirmation that there is only one holy and catholic and apostolic Church serves as the main theme of this piece because it is directed toward the king of France. If one is to be called Christian and truly be one of Christ s flock, one must subject oneself to the Roman pope because he is the legitimate pope, being one of Peter s successors. Furthermore, there is no salvation outside of this Church. Pastor Aeternus Pope Leo X writes this piece in order to reinforce what Pope Boniface VIII says in Unam Sanctam. More specifically, Leo X is attempting to restate the power that the pope possesses. He agrees with Boniface VIII s belief that it is necessary to submit oneself to the pope of Rome in order to reach salvation. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Penance is already a common practice in working for the remission of sins at this time, but Sixtus IV encourages Christians to think of their loved ones who have already passed away and are in the process of being cleansed of their remaining sins so that they may reach heaven. He also proposes that Christians give a fixed amount of money as indulgences over a span of ten years in order to help speed up the cleansing process in purgatory that their friends and family are experiencing. Instructio Summaria Albert of Mainz, who composes this procedure guide or around the time of Martin Luther, takes indulgences a step further by systemizing it. For example, he divides indulgences into multiple categories for a variety of the Church congregation so that they all may give, despite the differences in their means. These categories include the plenary remission of sins, the confessional, participation in blessings of the universal Church, and the plenary remission of sins for those who are currently in ... • 36. Ralph Ellison and Stereotypes Essay Stereotyping is a normal part of every one s life. Humans, by nature, classify things. We name animals and classify them by common characteristics but stereotyping can have negative repercussions, and everyone does it. In a recent study it was proven that everyone has an unconscious need to stereotype (Paul). In Junteenth and The Invisible man, Ralph Ellison argues that stereotyping can cause mayhem by making the people become something they are not. People are forced to by society s views to be something they are not. The Invisible man is forced by society to be a well mannered boy, even after they treated him like black trash calling him things like nigger and made him undress, with other boys around his age, in front of them. He even becomes a preacher under Hickman, and assists hickman in church services, if he wants to or not. There are things that Bliss wants to do but he doesn t because Hickman has taught him not to. For an example, he wants to go to the movies but Hickmans theory is that when people watch movies they lose touch with who they are supposed to be, Bliss. (Juneteenth p.223) The ironic part of this line is that Hickman is telling Bliss he is going to lose himself if he doesn t listen, and conform to what he is saying, which makes him lose himself entirely. Bliss even becomes so brainwashed by Hickman that he preached about how the white man has stopped them, and him from doing things and taking away their rights making them feel Eyeless, tongueless, drumless, danceless, hornless, songless (Juneteenth p.123), while he is/will be a white man. Hickman makes Bliss into what he believes to be the perfect person but he makes Bliss into something he did not want to be. In The Invisible Man, the invisible man conforms to society all throughout the book he had been conforming to society from the very beginning, he goes to college because he is told that that is where he should be, his grandfather s words haunted him, following him everywhere he went and everything he did he knew that he had to kill them with kindness.
