The Great Gatsby Analysis
The orgastic future that year by year recedes before us is the unattainable goal of those living in Tom
and Daisy s world a world where lives are wasted chasing the unreachable (Fitzgerald 180). In his
1925 novel The Great Gatsby, author F. Scott Fitzgerald suggests that making any progress
whatsoever toward this aspiration often requires people to establish facades that enable them to
progress socially, but that a crippled facade will backfire and cause detriment to its creator. In the
passage where Nick realizes who Gatsby is on page 48, Nick observes two different versions of
Gatsby one that is reassuring and truthful and another who pick[s] his words with care (Fitzgerald 48).
Nick is at first attracted to Gatsby s constructed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nick describes the smile as he would an entire person, demonstrating how he views it and Gatsby s
facade as such. Gatsby has designed his artificial character to put others at ease and to put himself in a
place of power. As evidenced by Nick s personifying diction related to his smile and his facade, this
effort has been a success. As Gatsby s smile vanishes, his facade does as well (Fitzgerald 48). Nick
then utilizes perceptive diction to illustrate his disenchantment upon realizing that the Gatsby whom
he had just met was not the true Gatsby. Now, Gatsby is an elegant young rough neck (Fitzgerald 48).
A rough neck either refers to an unrefined person who lacks sophistication, or an oil rig worker and an
elegant person possesses grace and poise. Generally, a rough neck is incapable of being elegant and
Nick notices this contradiction, using it to expose Gatsby s shifting, inconsistent character. In addition,
Nick also notes that Gatsby s elaborate formality of speech just missed being absurd and he got a
strong impression that he was picking his words with care (Fitzgerald 48). One who treads carefully,
exhibiting care when selecting words, is either an English teacher or someone attempting to curate a
specific version of themselves to display to others. Previously, Nick was blissfully unaware of the
facade that Gatsby had spun into existence upon first interacting with him. Now, however, he

The Consumer Price Index For Education
Households are not captivating as much as they need for their respective sustenance of needs. In
Rolph s (2012) summary article outlining wages versus prices, and he claims the economy supposedly
gained 163,000 jobs in July 2012, and for those Americans lucky enough to have work, it may not be
enough. Incomes have risen over time from the 1970 s, but not at the same rate that the Consumer
Price Index has. As reported by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2014 in Poverty USA (2014), 47 million
people lived in poverty, which means the poverty rate for 2014 was 15%. The year before the 2008
recession, poverty rate had an increase of 2.3% by 2014 (Poverty USA, 2014). As many Americans

Despite this, the overall cost of food has continuously increased (USDA ERS Historical CPI,2014).
Prices for basic food groups such as, processed fruits, vegetables, eggs, dairy, and poultry have each
had their own changes in prices. From 2000 to 2014, eggs have had the greatest amount of price
increase, while sugar and sweets had one of the lowest. Not surprisingly, foods that are considered
healthy, like organic fruits and vegetables, have had a greater increase in price when compared to
nonorganic. This makes it harder for the average family to be able to afford to a nutritious diet (USDA
ERS Historical CPI,2014). Households are defined by McConnell, Brue, and Flynn (2015) in their
book, Economics: Principles, Problems, Policies, as Economic entities (of one or more persons
occupying a housing unit) that provide resources to the economy and use the income received to
purchase goods and services that satisfy economic wants. Households have been seeing an increase in
their income over time. The empirical proof of that fact lies in several journals published by U.S.
Government Printing Office. In Selected Social and Economic Characteristics of Households Money
Income in 1975 (1977), the journal recorded a home income of $13,094. The next decade, another
article is published and outlines an income of $26,433

Lolita Figurative Language
The most obvious feature of Lolita, and the main reason for its staying power, is Humbert Humbert s
striking, complex, and enchanting prose. Humbert diverts the reader from his ugly actions, as a
pedophile, with his pretty words. He goes beyond ordinary prettiness; his constant wordplay and
verbal games force the reader to concentrate on language rather than on him. With his ability of
enchanting words and wordplay, he develops the ability to freeze time and in turn freeze Lolita in her
nymphet state. When Humbert describes Lolita playing tennis in minute detail, he succeeds in locking
her into endless nymphet state. Every time he revisits her through prose, he is able to maintain that
nymphet state his memory. Humbert writes Lolita in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the early stages of this novel, when Humbert Humbert first sees Lolita in the grass he is instantly
taken back to his childhood love, there was my Riviera love peering at me over ddark glasses....it was
the same child the same frail, honey hued shoulders, the same silky supple bare back, the same
chestnut head of hair... (39). He uses his words to relive and revive his adolescent love of Annabel.
HH objectifies Lolita by focusing on the nymphet assets he finds so exciting though he rarely
addresses her inner mind or feelings. He notes her bad moods and bad manners, Humbert nevertheless
remains convinced of Lolita s connection to Annabel, adolescent romance from his younger years. The
connection is important to Humbert and Humbert alone; this strengthens his belief that only a man like
himself could truly understand the rareness of a nymphet like Lolita. This thinking diminishes Lolita
to a secretly held idea of Humbert s and this denies her the chance to grow in her life. The disconnect
between Humbert s passionate yet diminishing view of Lolita the nymphet and Lolita the girl is found
in Humbert s language; which glamorizes the unglamorous point of view of a pedophile. Humbert
describes his illicit desires with sophisticated, striking prose; making the ideas attractive instead of
what would otherwise be vile. This effect of language is particularly notable when Humbert
masturbates against Lolita. Despite the troubling nature of

A. S. Byatt s The Pink Ribbon
A. S. Byatt s story The Pink Ribbon is a story about change in a marriage as a result of a traumatic
experience, as well as how the struggle between duty and love manifests themselves. In this story, a
man doing what he thinks is his duty becomes overwhelmed with feelings of anger, fear, and
resentment after his transition from spouse to caretaker. Through seemingly imagined encounters with
a beautiful young woman, this man is reminded of his wife and what it is like to have meaningful
contact with another person that is not consumed by taking care of someone else, which causes him to
make a choice in the name of mercy, both for himself and his wife. Byatt shows the changes in James
and Madeleine s relationship through the use of diction, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
James believed the doll Dipsy was equivalent to Mado, so the use of the word suffocating suggests
that he thought Mado was suffocating or trapped and the only way to help her was to give her release
through death, although it also could be hinting at the method he was going to use. Byatt wrote that
every time James went outside he took huge gulping breaths, which suggests that James felt trapped
himself and might have thought that if Mado were no longer around he would be able to breathe again.
James visits from the fetch (234) ,Dido, also foreshadow Mado s death. A fetch in folklore is an omen
of death. Since Dido reminded him of his wife and what their relationship used to be like, it makes
sense that Mado s death was forthcoming. The last instance of foreshadowing is in the final paragraph
of the story, ...the Teletubbies were sitting on the end of the casket shaped cradles,... (236), which,
again, goes back to the symbol of the Teletubbies doll. The idea of the Teletubbies going to beds that
were shaped like coffins proposes a parallel to where Mado was going to spend her last moments,
which is emphasized by James telling Mado to Come to bed,...Just a rest, for a while, (236). So, are
duty and love really different things? Merriam Webster defines duty as something that is done as part
of a job; something that must be done because it is morally right, and love as a feeling of strong or
constant affection for a person. James sense

Keratosis Pilaris
Keratosis pilaris (KP) is also referred to as follicular keratosis. This skin condition is characterized by
the formation of small, rough bumps on the surface of the skin (similar to goosebumps). Due to its
appearance and rough texture, KP is frequently referred to as chicken skin. This condition affects
approximately 40 percent of adults and up to 80 percent of adolescents. While follicular keratosis is
considered harmless, it can be bothersome because it is unsightly and usually leaves the skin feeling
dry, and itchy. What Causes Keratosis Pilaris? This condition is genetic and occurs when the hair
follicles become clogged: As such, any area of skin where hair grows can be afflicted with KP. The
upper arms are the most common location for the development of follicular keratosis; however, other
locations frequently afflicted with this condition include the thighs and the buttocks. Some individuals
will develop the small, rough bumps associated with keratosis pilaris on their face: It is not uncommon
for these bumps to be mistaken for acne. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Role Of The Gods In The Aztec Civilization
Most ancient civilizations, including the Aztecs were polytheistic yet most modern religions are
monotheistic, so what caused the change from hundreds of Gods to just one. I believe that the reason
for this phenomenon can be seen in the Aztec civilization dating back to the sixth century in Mexico.
In the beginning, they worshipped dozens of Gods, but as the Spanish Conquest drew closer and the
Aztec empire began to fall, fewer and fewer Gods were worshipped. A prime example of this is two of
their Gods of agriculture, Xipe Totec and Tlaloc. While both were major Gods throughout Aztec
history, as time went on the two slowly became indistinguishable from each other until only Tlaloc
was left, and then as modern day approached, not even him

Overall, a simple, tragic piece of history that tells us a bit about what happened to the overall Aztec
belief system. Some Gods, such as their sun Gods Tonatiuh and Huitzilopochtli were worshipped in
the form of Jesus. Some survived with the Nahuas, the modern day descendants of the Aztecs. Most
were simply forgotten, the obvious reason for which being that there was no room for them in the
monotheistic Catholic religion. As to why Xipe Totec was worshipped in the years proceeding this
event, I have a theory; as all cultures spread, I believe that the version of Aztec mythology that
worshipped Xipe Totec spread to the city of Tenochtitlan, one of, if not the most studied cities by
modern historians. This in turn may have created a few decades where Tlaloc and Xipe Totec
coexisted as two important Gods. However, I feel this may have created an inaccuracy, as some
historians might assume that what happened in Tenochtitlan happened in the rest of the empire (the
worship of Xipe Totec for example); this is what I consider to be the main reason Xipe Tote is
considered to be important to the Aztecs today while he wasn t important back

The Death Of Ivan Ilyich
Societal Pressure in The Death of Ivan Ilyich According to C.Joybell C, The unhappiest people in this
world are those who care the most about what other people think (Goodreads). I can see this in my life
and also in Leo Tolstoy s The Death of Ivan Ilyich. The main character Ivan Ilyich is dying from and
unknown disease and while suffering finds himself reflecting on his life choices. Ivan consistently
questions himself in the text, such as in his statement What if my life has all been wrong? (775). He
struggles with the idea that his life might have been a waste and that he really did not get to live. Ivan
has always made decisions based off of society s rules and not his own. In fact, he directly quotes this
in the text, It occurred to him that his scarcely perceptible attempts to struggle against what was
considered good by the most highly placed people, those scarcely noticeable impulses which he had
immediately suppressed, might have been the real thing, and all the rest false (776). Ivan Ilyich was
never a man who thought for himself or let alone went off impulse. He always thought about what
people around him would do or think about his decisions. Tolstoy s shows in this novel what can
happen when you live life by your own rules and what can happen when you live by societies rules
such as Ivan Ilyich. He shows that both choices come with major consequences. In this story Ivan
Ilyich had two brothers one older and one younger. The older

Essay On Women In The Odyssey
In The Odyssey, Odysseus goes through many challenging trials. He faces trials against monsters, is
away from his family, and one his biggest trials are women. Odysseus is faced with four key women
characters throughout his journey and two of them had slowed Odysseus down from coming home. At
times, the women would help Odysseus through his journey and this will cause Odysseus to succeed
in his journey. The Odyssey portrays the women as possibly evil, manipulative at times, and caring
and helpful at other times and are loyal to someone or something.
Women were portrayed as evil, seductive and manipulative, maybe even a distraction because
Odysseus ran into them and that caused him to return even more late to his family. Odysseus had first

The Education Of The United States
In the two hundred forty one years since the founding of the United States, few have seriously argued
the importance of education to society. Although education was left out of the United States
Constitution in the interest of states rights, Thomas Jefferson was not alone in believing that the most
important bill in our whole code is that for the diffusion of knowledge among the people... [which is
necessary] for the preservation of freedom and happiness. (251). Despite a consensus on the necessity
of education, its actualization has a storied past, one riddled with intense ideological debates,
landmark court cases, petty politics, and, at times, military intervention (e.g. during desegregation).

Next, I will outline key elements of Amy Gutmann s Democratic State of Education, including
nonrepressionism and freedom in choosing among competing conceptions of good life and good
society. Once this framework is in place, I will proceed to explore the perceived incompatibility of
Common Core with the principles of Gutmann s Democratic State. Ultimately, I will conclude that the
standards are indeed compatible with a Democratic State of Education given the latitude that states
have in tailoring the standards and given the fact that Common Core does not exclusively determine
curriculum.
The Common Core State Standards are the contrivance of a commission of governors and education
leaders from forty eight states sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of
Chief State School Officers. The overarching goals of the commission in drafting the standards were
to ensure that all students have the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and
life... regardless of where they live, and to promote equity by ensuring all students are well prepared to
collaborate and compete with their peers in the United States and abroad. In essence, the standards
were created to correct for geographical disparities in educational quality which had made for unequal
opportunities available to students after graduation. Two separate sections of Common Core
Standards, English Language Arts Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science,

The State s Electoral System
POLI 201: Electoral Reform in Canada
Kelsey Dechant
UCID 30012085

TA: Camilo Torres, T03
The format of a state s electoral system plays a foundational role in the quality of its democracy.
Illiberal democracies, for example, may limit potential opponents of the ruling party; these kinds of
states are generally said to be less democratic than those which encourage political freedom. Because
a nation s electoral structure influences the nature of its democracy, one must take a critical view on
current systems and seek to better them where possible. Though not an extreme example, the electoral
system in Canada can be said to hinder democracy, albeit indirectly, leading to apathy and discontent
amongst the electorate. In a disproportionate system such as Canada s, citizens voices are not as easily
or accurately represented. For this reason, it is of utmost importance to consider electoral reform so
that Canada s system is more proportionate and conducive to political engagement. Canada s current
electoral arrangement is known as a single member plurality or first past the post system. In this
system, the basis of seat distribution is who has the most votes during an election. For example, a
candidate who wins 34 percent of the popular vote will go on to represent a riding, even if the rest of
the votes go to two or more different parties. Plurality systems increase government stability and
effectiveness using a manufactured majority

While both Italian and German fascism in the interwar years were very similar, they were ultimately
more different due to their political ideologies, foreign policies and the structure of their respective
parties. Fascism, while not having a concrete definition can be defined by multiple attributes. Fascism
usually consist of a ultra right wing, oppressive and authoritarian government that places a heavy
emphasis on national identity. As such, fascist governments promote violence and the expansion

While much of my previous knowledge of country ideology has been through historians such as
Weinberg and Overy and Finaldi, I have found that the most helpful way to learn about the ideology
and goals of different countries is through the use of speeches from different political leaders at the
time. While the historian s point of view helps to summarize the speeches in their entirety, the
speeches from the leaders allows for personal interpretation based upon the language and the events
that precede it. While I have found speeches to be helpful, the limitations must still be thought of.
First, many of the speeches are originally given in foreign languages, where translations are needed.
These translations could change the meaning of some themes and could hinder one s ability to
understand the magnitude to the language that is used in its original form. It can also be limited
because much propaganda was used at the time. The speeches mostly being given to the entire country
leave much room for the leader to use propaganda for the country to believe in his beliefs, rather that
what the leader may be saying to his cabinet. While there is a wide range of ways to find information,
it is also hard to look at secondary sources, because while they make different arguments, the
arguments are based off of facts, that could be interpreted in many different

How Does Orwell Use Language In Animal Farm
In the book, 2 pigs, Napoleon and Snowball fight for absolute power on their farm. They follow the
ideals of animalism (adapted from Karl Marx s communism by Orwell) and use propaganda tactics to
overthrow Mr. Jones, the owner of the farm. Orwell uses Napoleon from the allegory to show that
language can be used as an instrument to abuse power.
You can see this on page 59/the first page of chapter XI when Napoleon has just added to the required
labor on the farm, making animals also work on Sundays when they previously hadn t. The book says

Ambiguous jurisdiction, unresolved prior conflicts, Differentiation in organization, Goal

conflict, it can bring individuals and groups closer together, open new avenues of thought processes
that might have been overlooked. Some companies will create conflict within a group or team to

Since the beginning of time all human beings have had a fascination with human flight. Watching a
bird soar through the air, one cannot help but desire the same capabilities. Imagine the point of view of
the bird that flies high above the trees, among the mountains, over the ocean, and high in the air, far
away from the clamor of everyday life on the ground. To have the freedom and power to release ones

Flight represents more to the minority than mastering nature or freeing ones self from the bonds of
gravity. To the minority, flight represents freedom. Freedom from the chains of slavery, freedom from
the trappings of this world, freedoms from that which may cause them or their families harm.
America, as a country, is made up of various races and cultures even carries as its symbol of freedom
the Bald Eagle. Although there are differences in literary references to flight among African American,
Hispanic, and American Indian writers, the common thread among them all is the powerful desire for
freedom through flight.
To the African American, references to flight almost always exclusively represent freedom. Whether
these references are in the form of novels, short stories, poetry, or music, the history of the African s
brought to America to serve as slaves is primarily based on the idea of freedom. Just as it is stated in
Course Objective 1a, forced participation was brought about by the acquisition of slaves. They did not
choose to leave their native home of Africa, nor did they choose to live out their lives as slaves in a
foreign country among foreign white people who showed little compassion for their plight. This left

Canadian and U.S. markets was denominated in eighths. Nevertheless, it was not the case in Europe

Homoeroticism In The Picture Of Dorian Gray
Wilde s sexuality and effeminate nature shaped his relations to the natural beauty of the world, which
in turn manifested itself in the moral implications of his now famous works. For example, his very
own personal ordeals are envisaged through the passages of The Picture of Dorian Gray, and it has
been passionately hypothesized that characters such as Basil, Dorian, and Lord Henry are personalities
of Wilde s own flamboyant character. In an interpretation written by Donald H Ericksen, Wilde had
written the following: Basil in how I see myself, Lord Henry how the world sees me and Dorian how I
would like to be . The discussions surrounding The Picture of Dorian Gray were linked to the
egregious homoeroticism displayed through the synergy of Wilde s characters and how they interacted
with each other. In a time of irrational Victorian thinking, it comes as no surprise that Wilde s writing
had evoked such a backlash. For people during the Victorian period, Wilde s male characters and the
relationships in which they maintained were more than abundantly suggestive to enable thoughts of
disgust in even the most tolerant of people. Wilde s own sexual orientation laid out for the reader just
how these relationships were assembled. In the opening of The Picture of Dorian Gray, ... Show more

that the sexuality lies less in the content , but rather in the subjectivity... in the relationship between

the denunciation of Oscar Wilde, and to the overwhelming amount of investigation used to examine

September 11 And Skyscrapers
Why do people want to build in the sky? Skyscrapers are the most iconic symbol of the city and are
amazing landscapes created by humans who reach the clouds and ignore gravity. It implements human
aspirations that we want to build a much higher level of buildings. There is no doubt that constructing
tall buildings is not something new. The most important things while raising buildings higher are its
structural design and life safety for people living or working inside the buildings. Today, as the
building is touching to the sky, occupants of buildings are worried more and more about how safe the
building is. The major concerns regarding tall building are unplanned fire and terrorist attack. The
43rd president George W. Bush quoted in results to 9/11, Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of
our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but
they cannot dent the steel of American resolve . As prospective engineers look to the future, we have
the opportunity to learn the very lesson by understanding the collapse of the WTC Towers. In the
years 9/11, the time after has arisen to learn and improve the design of future tall buildings against fire
induced collapse. The building we build inspires us and reflects on who we are. The collapse of the
World Trade Center buildings on September 11, 2001, was the Black Day in American History. The

Analysis Of Natural Goodness By Philippa Foot Essay
In her book Natural goodness , Philippa Foot shows that ethical evaluation has the same conceptual
structure as the evaluation of living things. This essay will extend from that and focus on how, in fact
and practical reason, that I am human sets what is good for me to do. In doing this, it will further show
how ethical naturalism can claim ethical facts are both descriptive and action guiding. The essay will
take the form of five main sections. Firstly, I will lay out the Footian view of a thick notion of how a
plant or animal should be based on where we see it aiming at and how it characteristically gets there
sets our evaluation of those subjects. Secondly, I will distinguish between internal and external
reasons for acting in order to disambiguate the following section in which I discuss John McDowell s
view of how at least some internal ethical reasons for acting do not need further internal justification
to be correct reasons. In order to relate this to the first section, I will look at Steven Hendley s
argument that correct reason is rooted in first nature and argue that human telos must be seen as what
both rational second nature and first nature is aiming at, a la animal Telos. Finally, using John Hacker
Wright as a springboard, I will argue that taking ourselves to be acting on correct internal reasons
requires and discloses a picture of how people should be which connects human telos to correct action
in the spheres of practical and theoretic reason. Why

Persuasive Essay On Winning
Competition is defined by the Merriam Webster s Collegiate Dictionary as a contest between rivals.
Many views winning as the optimum outcome for their favorite athlete or sport s team. Henry Russell
Sanders said, Sure, winning isn t everything; it s the only thing. A similar but different phrase was
echoed by Vince Lombardi. He said, Winning isn t important, but the desire to win is. The desire to
win is what pushes all to be the best they can be. A healthy society should not be obsessed with
winning. Winning, after all, isn t what makes someone the best at something. Sure, Suzy could win the
tennis match, but if she has no drive to repeat the action of winning again, what s the point? One
example of why the desire to win is best is found in the life of Albert Einstein. This man didn t really
excel in school, but he kept working and trying his hardest. In fact, he eventually went to solve many
of the great mysteries of physics. However, he didn t make his discoveries until later in life. This
shows that if one keeps working hard things will eventually work themselves out, even if it takes.
Another example of this principle can found in the life of Phiona. She learned to play chess as a little
girl in the slums of Uganda, and she eventually went on to become a chess champion. She, however,
wasn t always the best at chess. She lost the very first game she ever played, and this loss sparked her
desire to improve the game and to eventually win many matches. She proves

Self Identity In Renaissance Plays
Self identity is a prominent notion in many Renaissance plays. Most of these plays are concerned with
deceit and change of identity. Oftentimes, the devious characters are the ones who show a part of
themselves at a certain point in the play and as the story progresses they unveil a different side of
them. In most of the Renaissance dramas that were discussed, almost all the plays have at least one
character with questionable identity. This notion of identity is one of the most important themes in
Thomas Middleton and William Rowley s The Changeling. Fluid identity is seen in characters such as
Beatrice; however, De Florez s identity is more ambiguous and should be analyzed differently. When a
person s personality is solid and they are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bosola is one of the few characters that are so ambiguous that it is difficult to place him into any type
of mold. More specifically, his identity is one big question mark because it can be seen very
differently from different perspectives. At the beginning of the play, in one of Bosola s first speeches,
he portrays a secure character that sees the two brothers for what they truly are. Bosola describes them
as plum trees that grow crooked over standing pools (1.1.49 50). Bosola s description leads the reader
to think of him as someone with a strong character who will not be pushed around and dominated by
the brothers who seem to be in control of every other character s lives. Bosola s moral security is
again reinforced when Ferdinand offers him gold to spy on the duchess, but Bosola refuses, claiming
that he will not be bought, Take your devils, which hell calls angels! These cursed gifts would make
you a corrupter, me and impudent traitor

Immigration And Crime Essay
The economic theory of crime predicts that all else equal, individuals with lower outside options
commit more crimes than others. While immigrants are known to have lower levels of education,
lower wages, and higher unemployment rates than natives, previous studies have not found a
relationship between immigration and crime. Crime rates have been on a decline, even in areas where
there are large numbers of immigrant populations. Between the years 1990 and 2013, the foreign born
population grew from 7.9 percent to 13.5 percent in the U.S. Also during this time, data from the

The Importance Of A Career In Computer Engineering
Ever since the seventh grade I was always interested in building a computer. All my friends were
playing videogames on their computers and, so I wanted to build one. They were way too expensive,
so I never got the chance. I enjoy fixing computers and helping my family with their technical issues.
Everything is run by electronics these days, so I might as well get good at using them and seeing how
they work.
In the career field of engineering, there is a broad field and offers several alternative career paths.
Those interested in working with engineers and developers to create the code for software programs
and systems should consider a career in computer programming. After reviewing plans and
operational diagrams from software developers, programmers use specialized tools and programming
languages to produce the finished product. They also analyze and test existing products to identify and
repair errors ( Alternative Careers ).
Computer hardware engineer is another possible career route in this industry. As the name implies, this
career focuses on creating, improving, and evaluating the various parts that make up the computers
and computer systems such as routers, memory boards, central processing units, video sound cards,
network components, etc. More than likely working in a laboratory building, testing ideas and the
involvement in the manufacturing or the installing aspect of this industry. However, due to industry

Women s Role In The Civil War Essay
The day is July 21, 1861. Two armies are clashing in a battle that marks the beginning of a long war
that split their country. Throughout the battle, a Union soldier is brought into the the army hospital tent
on a stretcher with four bullet holes in his chest. He is escorted to the nearest bed for treatment and is
shocked to find a woman performing the operation. On the same day, in the battle, another man is
astonished to find a soldier that looks like and may be a woman fighting the enemy beside him. Like
these women, many others took part in the war. Contrary to what many believe, women had played a
role in the civil war as spies, nurses, soldiers and on the home front. In 1861, 11 southern states
seceded from the Union. On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces surrounded Fort Sumter in Virginia. In
the predawn hours, the forces bombed the fort with shells. Union troops in the fort responded by
opening fire. The war had begun. The Civil War lasted about 4 years and costed more than 600,000

Causes Of Water Pollution In The Huangpu River
Pollution of Water in the Huangpu River Introduction The Huangpu River is located in Shanghai,
China. Goes through Shanghai from South West to North East. It is the water supply to the 13 million
people in the city. It also serves importance for tourism, fishery, navigation, and, most importantly,
receiving wastewater. In the mid 1980s, a control plan for the pollution in the Huangpu River was
made. But exactly how polluted is the Huangpu River? Causes of Pollution (5) (Pollution of the
Huangpu River by percentage (5)) There are four attributes to the pollution of the Huangpu River.
First, wastewater discharged to the Huangpu River contains large amount of organic substances, which
create a significant demand for dissolved oxygen in the water. Second, about 81 per cent of the total
waterways in the city are polluted. Third, the most serious pollution occurs in the urban section,
particularly at the water intake points for the Nanshi Water Treatment Plant and the Yangpu Water
Treatment Plant. Finally, the tidal nature of Huangpu River restricts the release of organic pollutants to
downstream stretches. Wrote the study case that was prepared by Chonghua Zhang and published on

At first glance, the definition of health as provided by the World Health Organization seems to be all
encompassing. It states that health is dependent on complete well being of mental, physical, and social
faculties. However, with the study of different cultures using a public health perspective, we have
learned that cultural aspects that affect disease vary immensely from population to population. While
disease is a universal biological concept, social perceptions give an illness its cultural meaning and as
we know, these perceptions heavily influence the recognition of the disease itself. If societal
perceptions can give a disease a sense of cultural consciousness, then what can be said of their ability

Typically this description fits the mold for what is characteristic of public housing. Aside from the

have an array of health issues to the daily stress associated with their economic disadvantages and the

Marketing Plan For An Exclusive Market Essay
A marketing plan is not a list of marketing ideas from which you haphazardly choose various concepts
to test or combine for trial and error experimentation. A plan is an essential business tool for hospitals,
medical groups or provider practices to attract patients and consumers. Marketing in health care has
shifted directly to consumers and patients.
As discussed by Thomas, R. K. (2015), marketing uses a mix to of variables to influence users of an
exclusive market. Marketing health care services are about how you position the organization to
satisfy the needs of the market. Four critical elements of marketing that businesses should take into
consideration when implementing any strategic plan for healthcare services are:
Product. The right product to satisfy the needs of your target customer.
Price. The right product offered at the right price.
Place. The right product at the right price available in the right place to be bought by customers.
Promotion. Informing potential customers of the availability of the product, its price and its place

1. Introduction to Real Estate Investing
Real estate ownership is more than purchasing a place to call home. It is one of the most desirable
possessions for the majority of people and has propelled some of the most well known men and
women into the league of the richest people in the world.
Although the real estate market has plenty of opportunities for making large profits, buying and ...

Some people find real estate investing appealing, and some do not. In reality, the majority of the world
s wealth is held in real estate. Everyone from Warren Buffet to Tim Draper uses real estate as a way to
create assets and generate wealth.
Silicon Valley angel investor and serial entrepreneur, Manny Fernandez, is someone who began his
career in real estate investing. When most people look at the success of those in high level positions,
they look at their current status and not what it took to get there.
Soon after purchasing and flipping his first home at the age of 20, Manny soon began to heavily invest
in the fixing and flipping business, turning over more than 30 properties for profit. Years later, he
founded the Sacramento Affordable Housing Organization (SAHO), which gave lifelong renters the
opportunity to become property owners. Through the SAHO Manny was able to get acquainted with
some of California s most dominant real estate investors, putting him in the position of the
investments coming to him, instead of the other way around.
Once establishing himself as a successful real estate investor in Northern California, Manny moved to
the heart of Silicon Valley to become an angel investor; turning his focus on helping young
entrepreneurs develop their startups into successful companies. By networking and

The Communication Theory Of Uncertainty Reduction Theory
Stuttering, perspiring, and feeling a dry mouth are a few things someone who has to meet and interact
with new people might experience. Interacting with new people will come with dealing with
uncertainty jitters. This research looks at the different critiques by communication scholars on the
communication theory of Uncertainty Reduction Theory. Uncertainty Reduction Theory is a
communication theory that came about through the research of Charles Berger from the post positivist
tradition.
Charles Berger through Uncertainty Reduction Theory proposes that the beginnings of personal
relationships are filled with uncertainties. Berger suggests that anticipation of future interaction,
incentive value, or deviance can boost our drive to reduce ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using quantitative and qualitative data in a study, the researcher nulls the weaknesses (Creswell,
2014). Creswell (2014) states the core assumption of this form of inquiry is that the combination of
qualitative and quantitative approaches provides a more complete understanding of a research problem
than either approach alone . Researchers who hold different philosophical positions may find mixed
methods research to be difficult because of their different beliefs (Greene, 2007). However, mixed
methods research also represents an opportunity to change these tensions into fresh knowledge
through discovery. A pragmatic perspective draws using diverse approaches, giving primacy to the
importance of the research problem and question, and valuing both objective and subjective
knowledge (Morgan, 2007). A transformative perspective offers an orienting framework for a mixed
methods study based on creating a more just and democratic society that permeates the entire research
process, from the problem to the conclusions, and the use of results (Mertens, 2009).
Difference in Qualitative and Quantitative According to Wyse (2011) from Snap Surveys, qualitative
Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons,
opinions, and motivations. It provides possible answers into the problem or helps to develop ideas or
hypotheses for potential quantitative research. Qualitative Research is also used to find trends in

form an underlying foundation for many of the tensions between Sierra Leone which contributed to
the initial lack of economic prosperity for the settlement of freed slaves. Initial interactions founded
these tensions. Newly arrived freed slaves that settled in colonies in Sierra Leone employed local
Africans to help with building their settlements. However, despite this aid, the strains on the settlers in
terms of disease and disorder caused the initial settlements to fail. After this failure, more freed slaves
attempted to settle again at a different time of the year. They were warned that if they behaved
improperly, local African rulers would take them and sell them on slave ships (Braidwood 1994).
Indigenous Africans challenged this arrival of settlers and aggravated them, and settlers requested
defense supplies from Europe for fear of being massacred (Braidwood 1994). One of the shortfalls of
Thompson s perspective is that he seems to be unaware of the magnitude of the tensions between
indigenous Africans and freed slaves. Tribal chiefs led movements in resistance to European influence,
and Thompson is largely ignorant of this. The Temne chiefs who sold Freetown to British abolitionists
initiated a series of misunderstandings that would later incite conflict between the groups. This
founded some of the conflicts between indigenous Africans and Europeans, but Tribal chiefs were not
only provoked by European influence. The decline of the slave trade also meant that tribal

The Roots and Influences of Jon Krakauer s Literature
The way to Everest is not a Yellow Brick Road Jon Krakauer. This statement derives from Krakauer s
thoughts and takeaways from his disastrous climb up Mount Everest that completely upset Krakauer s
viewpoint of his lifelong dream, to climb the tallest mountain in the world. Krakauer recounts his
journey while scaling Mount Everest in his non fictional book Into Thin Air, that supports his
statement of why the climb is not a Yellow Brick Road. Jon Krakauer s countless mountaineering
adventures are the foundation of most of his books, including Eiger Dreams, Into Thin Air, and Into
the Wild. Krakauer also uses religion as a base of his book Under the Banner of Heaven. Krakauer s

Perseverance Through Madness In Allen Ginsberg s Howl
There is a stereotype that the best minds of a generation are the heroes of their generations, making
new discoveries that can alter the course of history. While this holds true most of the time, Allen
Ginsberg s 1956 poem Howl offers a different perspective. In Howl, Ginsberg chronicles the chaotic
lives of the best minds of [his] generation, using graphic language that eventually landed the
publishers of the poem in court for a lawsuit, which was documented in the 2010 film Howl. Howl
suggests that education and intellect provides the ability to persevere through madness as well as the
ability to exhibit resistance to the self destruction that madness has the potential to invoke. The poem
effectively communicates this message through its repeated refrains, juxtaposition, and allusion. The
theme of perseverance through madness is more prominent in the poem than in the film, yet it can still
be recognized with close attention. The movie also serves as a solid resource in understanding the
context of the poem within Ginsberg s own life. Howl is divided into three parts, with a last section
titled Footnote to Howl. Each part of the poem is distinguished by a repetitive line structure. In Part 1,
most of the lines start with the word who which is followed by a verb in the past tense. The repetitive
structure of Part 1 is essential to understanding the theme of Howl as it emphasizes the lifestyle of
madness that the great minds are dealing with. This is done

The Principle Of Population By Thomas Malthus
POLS1301 Essay One
Thomas Malthus 1798 An Essay on the Principle of Population, Chapter 1
Thomas Malthus was an English philosopher who lived from 1766 to 1834, An Essay on the Principle
of Population, is one of the most influential pieces of writing in history. Not only did it help to
establish the modern field of economics, it aided Charles Darwin on his regarding evolutionary
science. Malthus core argument that runs a majority of the book is dedicated to the Iron Law of
Population . This essay will seek to examine the premises of Thomas Malthus 1798 an Essay on the
Principle of Population and conclude on its argument as well as provide a justification of the invalidity
of the argument. In addition, it will identify its multiple influences on historical contexts throughout
time.
The most persistent theory written by Thomas Malthus in 1798 regarding population growth and the
effects on humanity, which is rather ironic as it has a almost lack of connection to the actual history of
humanity and its population growth. In 100CE the population of the Earth was estimated to be under
one billion people, roughly at 200 million people, following on almost 2 millennia later to 1800CE the
population had seen a mere growth to approximately 800 million. During this time Malthus wrote a
piece regarding the slow growth in population and why this was rate was the way things would be for
the rest of human life. He put forward that the limits of human population growth are due to

Cloud Computing And The Cloud Essay
INTRODUCTION The definition of the Cloud Computing is broad enough to cover everything such
as web search and photo sharing to social networking etc. Perhaps the key point is simply that cloud
computing resources should be accessible by the customers/end users anytime, anywhere, and from
any platform over internet on pay for use basis. Broadly, the cloud can be described as on demand
computing, fix anyone with a network connection. Access to applications and data anywhere, anytime
from any device is the potential outcome. The cloud refers to wide area networks, generally the intent
from which remote computing resources are shared as shown in the Fig 1.1. The cloud reduces costs
and complexity and provides scalability. The biggest advantage that the cloud brings is to reduce costs
and improve efficiency. An institution can rely on the pay as you go characteristic of the three pillars
of cloud: PaaS and Saas. Ease of maintenance increase efficiency as the pain of maintaining the
software is now shifted to the cloud service provider. Cloud computing customers do not need to own
the physical infrastructure; rather they use the resources from a third party provider on rental basis.
This helps them to avoid huge effort for the setup of the infrastructure. The End user consumes the
resources as a service and pay only for resources that they consume. Most cloud computing
infrastructure consists of

  • 2. The Great Gatsby Analysis The orgastic future that year by year recedes before us is the unattainable goal of those living in Tom and Daisy s world a world where lives are wasted chasing the unreachable (Fitzgerald 180). In his 1925 novel The Great Gatsby, author F. Scott Fitzgerald suggests that making any progress whatsoever toward this aspiration often requires people to establish facades that enable them to progress socially, but that a crippled facade will backfire and cause detriment to its creator. In the passage where Nick realizes who Gatsby is on page 48, Nick observes two different versions of Gatsby one that is reassuring and truthful and another who pick[s] his words with care (Fitzgerald 48). Nick is at first attracted to Gatsby s constructed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nick describes the smile as he would an entire person, demonstrating how he views it and Gatsby s facade as such. Gatsby has designed his artificial character to put others at ease and to put himself in a place of power. As evidenced by Nick s personifying diction related to his smile and his facade, this effort has been a success. As Gatsby s smile vanishes, his facade does as well (Fitzgerald 48). Nick then utilizes perceptive diction to illustrate his disenchantment upon realizing that the Gatsby whom he had just met was not the true Gatsby. Now, Gatsby is an elegant young rough neck (Fitzgerald 48). A rough neck either refers to an unrefined person who lacks sophistication, or an oil rig worker and an elegant person possesses grace and poise. Generally, a rough neck is incapable of being elegant and Nick notices this contradiction, using it to expose Gatsby s shifting, inconsistent character. In addition, Nick also notes that Gatsby s elaborate formality of speech just missed being absurd and he got a strong impression that he was picking his words with care (Fitzgerald 48). One who treads carefully, exhibiting care when selecting words, is either an English teacher or someone attempting to curate a specific version of themselves to display to others. Previously, Nick was blissfully unaware of the facade that Gatsby had spun into existence upon first interacting with him. Now, however, he recognizes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Rolph s (2012) summary article outlining wages versus prices, and he claims the economy supposedly gained 163,000 jobs in July 2012, and for those Americans lucky enough to have work, it may not be enough. Incomes have risen over time from the 1970 s, but not at the same rate that the Consumer Price Index has. As reported by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2014 in Poverty USA (2014), 47 million people lived in poverty, which means the poverty rate for 2014 was 15%. The year before the 2008 recession, poverty rate had an increase of 2.3% by 2014 (Poverty USA, 2014). As many Americans fluctuate around the poverty line during several recessions over the ... Prices for basic food groups such as, processed fruits, vegetables, eggs, dairy, and poultry have each had their own changes in prices. From 2000 to 2014, eggs have had the greatest amount of price increase, while sugar and sweets had one of the lowest. Not surprisingly, foods that are considered healthy, like organic fruits and vegetables, have had a greater increase in price when compared to nonorganic. This makes it harder for the average family to be able to afford to a nutritious diet (USDA ERS Historical CPI,2014). Households have been seeing an increase in their income over time. The empirical proof of that fact lies in several journals published by U.S. Government Printing Office. Humbert diverts the reader from his ugly actions, as a pedophile, with his pretty words. He goes beyond ordinary prettiness; his constant wordplay and verbal games force the reader to concentrate on language rather than on him. With his ability of enchanting words and wordplay, he develops the ability to freeze time and in turn freeze Lolita in her nymphet state. (39). He uses his words to relive and revive his adolescent love of Annabel. HH objectifies Lolita by focusing on the nymphet assets he finds so exciting though he rarely addresses her inner mind or feelings. He notes her bad moods and bad manners, Humbert nevertheless remains convinced of Lolita s connection to Annabel, adolescent romance from his younger years. The connection is important to Humbert and Humbert alone; this strengthens his belief that only a man like himself could truly understand the rareness of a nymphet like Lolita. This thinking diminishes Lolita to a secretly held idea of Humbert s and this denies her the chance to grow in her life. The disconnect between Humbert s passionate yet diminishing view of Lolita the nymphet and Lolita the girl is found in Humbert s language; which glamorizes the unglamorous point of view of a pedophile. Humbert describes his illicit desires with sophisticated, striking prose; making the ideas attractive instead of what would otherwise be vile. • 6. A. S. Byatt s The Pink Ribbon A. S. Byatt s story The Pink Ribbon is a story about change in a marriage as a result of a traumatic experience, as well as how the struggle between duty and love manifests themselves. In this story, a man doing what he thinks is his duty becomes overwhelmed with feelings of anger, fear, and resentment after his transition from spouse to caretaker. Through seemingly imagined encounters with a beautiful young woman, this man is reminded of his wife and what it is like to have meaningful contact with another person that is not consumed by taking care of someone else, which causes him to make a choice in the name of mercy, both for himself and his wife. Byatt shows the changes in James and Madeleine s relationship through the use of diction, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... James believed the doll Dipsy was equivalent to Mado, so the use of the word suffocating suggests that he thought Mado was suffocating or trapped and the only way to help her was to give her release through death, although it also could be hinting at the method he was going to use. Byatt wrote that every time James went outside he took huge gulping breaths, which suggests that James felt trapped himself and might have thought that if Mado were no longer around he would be able to breathe again. James visits from the fetch (234) ,Dido, also foreshadow Mado s death. A fetch in folklore is an omen of death. Since Dido reminded him of his wife and what their relationship used to be like, it makes sense that Mado s death was forthcoming. The last instance of foreshadowing is in the final paragraph of the story, ...the Teletubbies were sitting on the end of the casket shaped cradles,... (236), which, again, goes back to the symbol of the Teletubbies doll. The idea of the Teletubbies going to beds that were shaped like coffins proposes a parallel to where Mado was going to spend her last moments, which is emphasized by James telling Mado to Come to bed,...Just a rest, for a while, (236). This skin condition is characterized by the formation of small, rough bumps on the surface of the skin (similar to goosebumps). Due to its appearance and rough texture, KP is frequently referred to as chicken skin. This condition affects approximately 40 percent of adults and up to 80 percent of adolescents. While follicular keratosis is considered harmless, it can be bothersome because it is unsightly and usually leaves the skin feeling dry, and itchy. What Causes Keratosis Pilaris? This condition is genetic and occurs when the hair follicles become clogged: As such, any area of skin where hair grows can be afflicted with KP. The upper arms are the most common location for the development of follicular keratosis; however, other locations frequently afflicted with this condition include the thighs and the buttocks. • 8. The Role Of The Gods In The Aztec Civilization Most ancient civilizations, including the Aztecs were polytheistic yet most modern religions are monotheistic, so what caused the change from hundreds of Gods to just one. I believe that the reason for this phenomenon can be seen in the Aztec civilization dating back to the sixth century in Mexico. In the beginning, they worshipped dozens of Gods, but as the Spanish Conquest drew closer and the Aztec empire began to fall, fewer and fewer Gods were worshipped. A prime example of this is two of their Gods of agriculture, Xipe Totec and Tlaloc. While both were major Gods throughout Aztec history, as time went on the two slowly became indistinguishable from each other until only Tlaloc was left, and then as modern day approached, not even him If ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Overall, a simple, tragic piece of history that tells us a bit about what happened to the overall Aztec belief system. Some Gods, such as their sun Gods Tonatiuh and Huitzilopochtli were worshipped in the form of Jesus. Some survived with the Nahuas, the modern day descendants of the Aztecs. Most were simply forgotten, the obvious reason for which being that there was no room for them in the monotheistic Catholic religion. As to why Xipe Totec was worshipped in the years proceeding this event, I have a theory; as all cultures spread, I believe that the version of Aztec mythology that worshipped Xipe Totec spread to the city of Tenochtitlan, one of, if not the most studied cities by modern historians. This in turn may have created a few decades where Tlaloc and Xipe Totec coexisted as two important Gods. However, I feel this may have created an inaccuracy, as some historians might assume that what happened in Tenochtitlan happened in the rest of the empire (the worship of Xipe Totec for example); this is what I consider to be the main reason Xipe Tote is considered to be important to the Aztecs today while he wasn t important back ... • 9. The Death Of Ivan Ilyich Societal Pressure in The Death of Ivan Ilyich According to C.Joybell C, The unhappiest people in this world are those who care the most about what other people think (Goodreads). I can see this in my life and also in Leo Tolstoy s The Death of Ivan Ilyich. The main character Ivan Ilyich is dying from and unknown disease and while suffering finds himself reflecting on his life choices. Ivan consistently questions himself in the text, such as in his statement What if my life has all been wrong? (775). He struggles with the idea that his life might have been a waste and that he really did not get to live. Ivan has always made decisions based off of society s rules and not his own. In fact, he directly quotes this in the text, It occurred to him that his scarcely perceptible attempts to struggle against what was considered good by the most highly placed people, those scarcely noticeable impulses which he had immediately suppressed, might have been the real thing, and all the rest false (776). Ivan Ilyich was never a man who thought for himself or let alone went off impulse. He always thought about what people around him would do or think about his decisions. Tolstoy s shows in this novel what can happen when you live life by your own rules and what can happen when you live by societies rules such as Ivan Ilyich. He shows that both choices come with major consequences. In this story Ivan Ilyich had two brothers one older and one younger. The older ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Once this framework is in place, I will proceed to explore the perceived incompatibility of Common Core with the principles of Gutmann s Democratic State. Ultimately, I will conclude that the standards are indeed compatible with a Democratic State of Education given the latitude that states have in tailoring the standards and given the fact that Common Core does not exclusively determine curriculum. The Common Core State Standards are the contrivance of a commission of governors and education leaders from forty eight states sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. • 12. The State s Electoral System POLI 201: Electoral Reform in Canada Kelsey Dechant UCID 30012085 November 10, 2015 TA: Camilo Torres, T03 The format of a state s electoral system plays a foundational role in the quality of its democracy. Illiberal democracies, for example, may limit potential opponents of the ruling party; these kinds of states are generally said to be less democratic than those which encourage political freedom. Because a nation s electoral structure influences the nature of its democracy, one must take a critical view on current systems and seek to better them where possible. Though not an extreme example, the electoral system in Canada can be said to hinder democracy, albeit indirectly, leading to apathy and discontent amongst the electorate. In a disproportionate system such as Canada s, citizens voices are not as easily or accurately represented. For this reason, it is of utmost importance to consider electoral reform so that Canada s system is more proportionate and conducive to political engagement. Canada s current electoral arrangement is known as a single member plurality or first past the post system. In this system, the basis of seat distribution is who has the most votes during an election. For example, a candidate who wins 34 percent of the popular vote will go on to represent a riding, even if the rest of the votes go to two or more different parties. Plurality systems increase government stability and effectiveness using a manufactured majority ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While much of my previous knowledge of country ideology has been through historians such as Weinberg and Overy and Finaldi, I have found that the most helpful way to learn about the ideology and goals of different countries is through the use of speeches from different political leaders at the time. While the historian s point of view helps to summarize the speeches in their entirety, the speeches from the leaders allows for personal interpretation based upon the language and the events that precede it. While I have found speeches to be helpful, the limitations must still be thought of. First, many of the speeches are originally given in foreign languages, where translations are needed. These translations could change the meaning of some themes and could hinder one s ability to understand the magnitude to the language that is used in its original form. It can also be limited because much propaganda was used at the time. The speeches mostly being given to the entire country leave much room for the leader to use propaganda for the country to believe in his beliefs, rather that what the leader may be saying to his cabinet. Random acts of kindness are not just for homeless people, they are for rich, poor, and maybe in the middle people too! Flight represents more to the minority than mastering nature or freeing ones self from the bonds of gravity. To the minority, flight represents freedom. Freedom from the chains of slavery, freedom from the trappings of this world, freedoms from that which may cause them or their families harm. America, as a country, is made up of various races and cultures even carries as its symbol of freedom the Bald Eagle. Although there are differences in literary references to flight among African American, Hispanic, and American Indian writers, the common thread among them all is the powerful desire for freedom through flight. To the African American, references to flight almost always exclusively represent freedom. Whether these references are in the form of novels, short stories, poetry, or music, the history of the African s brought to America to serve as slaves is primarily based on the idea of freedom. Just as it is stated in Course Objective 1a, forced participation was brought about by the acquisition of slaves. They did not choose to leave their native home of Africa, nor did they choose to live out their lives as slaves in a foreign country among foreign white people who showed little compassion for their plight. This left slaves feeling trapped and bound, spiritually, and often times physically, therefore flight is frequently exercised as a means of escape for African Americans from their position of oppression ... • 21. Homoeroticism In The Picture Of Dorian Gray Wilde s sexuality and effeminate nature shaped his relations to the natural beauty of the world, which in turn manifested itself in the moral implications of his now famous works. For example, his very own personal ordeals are envisaged through the passages of The Picture of Dorian Gray, and it has been passionately hypothesized that characters such as Basil, Dorian, and Lord Henry are personalities of Wilde s own flamboyant character. In an interpretation written by Donald H Ericksen, Wilde had written the following: Basil in how I see myself, Lord Henry how the world sees me and Dorian how I would like to be . The discussions surrounding The Picture of Dorian Gray were linked to the egregious homoeroticism displayed through the synergy of Wilde s characters and how they interacted with each other. In a time of irrational Victorian thinking, it comes as no surprise that Wilde s writing had evoked such a backlash. For people during the Victorian period, Wilde s male characters and the relationships in which they maintained were more than abundantly suggestive to enable thoughts of disgust in even the most tolerant of people. Wilde s own sexual orientation laid out for the reader just how these relationships were assembled. In the opening of The Picture of Dorian Gray, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Skyscrapers are the most iconic symbol of the city and are amazing landscapes created by humans who reach the clouds and ignore gravity. It implements human aspirations that we want to build a much higher level of buildings. There is no doubt that constructing tall buildings is not something new. The most important things while raising buildings higher are its structural design and life safety for people living or working inside the buildings. Today, as the building is touching to the sky, occupants of buildings are worried more and more about how safe the building is. The major concerns regarding tall building are unplanned fire and terrorist attack. The 43rd president George W. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve . As prospective engineers look to the future, we have the opportunity to learn the very lesson by understanding the collapse of the WTC Towers. In the years 9/11, the time after has arisen to learn and improve the design of future tall buildings against fire induced collapse. The building we build inspires us and reflects on who we are. Analysis Of Natural Goodness By Philippa Foot Essay In her book Natural goodness , Philippa Foot shows that ethical evaluation has the same conceptual structure as the evaluation of living things. This essay will extend from that and focus on how, in fact and practical reason, that I am human sets what is good for me to do. In doing this, it will further show how ethical naturalism can claim ethical facts are both descriptive and action guiding. The essay will take the form of five main sections. Firstly, I will lay out the Footian view of a thick notion of how a plant or animal should be based on where we see it aiming at and how it characteristically gets there sets our evaluation of those subjects. Secondly, I will distinguish between internal and external reasons for acting in order to disambiguate the following section in which I discuss John McDowell s view of how at least some internal ethical reasons for acting do not need further internal justification to be correct reasons. In order to relate this to the first section, I will look at Steven Hendley s argument that correct reason is rooted in first nature and argue that human telos must be seen as what both rational second nature and first nature is aiming at, a la animal Telos. Finally, using John Hacker Wright as a springboard, I will argue that taking ourselves to be acting on correct internal reasons requires and discloses a picture of how people should be which connects human telos to correct action in the spheres of practical and theoretic reason. • 24. Persuasive Essay On Winning Competition is defined by the Merriam Webster s Collegiate Dictionary as a contest between rivals. Many views winning as the optimum outcome for their favorite athlete or sport s team. Henry Russell Sanders said, Sure, winning isn t everything; it s the only thing. A similar but different phrase was echoed by Vince Lombardi. He said, Winning isn t important, but the desire to win is. The desire to win is what pushes all to be the best they can be. A healthy society should not be obsessed with winning. Winning, after all, isn t what makes someone the best at something. Sure, Suzy could win the tennis match, but if she has no drive to repeat the action of winning again, what s the point? One example of why the desire to win is best is found in the life of Albert Einstein. This man didn t really excel in school, but he kept working and trying his hardest. In fact, he eventually went to solve many of the great mysteries of physics. However, he didn t make his discoveries until later in life. This shows that if one keeps working hard things will eventually work themselves out, even if it takes. Another example of this principle can found in the life of Phiona. She learned to play chess as a little girl in the slums of Uganda, and she eventually went on to become a chess champion. She, however, wasn t always the best at chess. She lost the very first game she ever played, and this loss sparked her desire to improve the game and to eventually win many matches. She proves ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Using quantitative and qualitative data in a study, the researcher nulls the weaknesses (Creswell, 2014). Creswell (2014) states the core assumption of this form of inquiry is that the combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches provides a more complete understanding of a research problem than either approach alone . Researchers who hold different philosophical positions may find mixed methods research to be difficult because of their different beliefs (Greene, 2007). However, mixed methods research also represents an opportunity to change these tensions into fresh knowledge through discovery. A pragmatic perspective draws using diverse approaches, giving primacy to the importance of the research problem and question, and valuing both objective and subjective knowledge (Morgan, 2007). A transformative perspective offers an orienting framework for a mixed methods study based on creating a more just and democratic society that permeates the entire research process, from the problem to the conclusions, and the use of results (Mertens, 2009). Difference in Qualitative and Quantitative According to Wyse (2011) from Snap Surveys, qualitative Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides possible answers into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research. Qualitative Research is also used to find trends in ... Jacks Causes And Disadvantages form an underlying foundation for many of the tensions between Sierra Leone which contributed to the initial lack of economic prosperity for the settlement of freed slaves. Initial interactions founded these tensions. Newly arrived freed slaves that settled in colonies in Sierra Leone employed local Africans to help with building their settlements. However, despite this aid, the strains on the settlers in terms of disease and disorder caused the initial settlements to fail. After this failure, more freed slaves attempted to settle again at a different time of the year. They were warned that if they behaved improperly, local African rulers would take them and sell them on slave ships (Braidwood 1994). Indigenous Africans challenged this arrival of settlers and aggravated them, and settlers requested defense supplies from Europe for fear of being massacred (Braidwood 1994). One of the shortfalls of Thompson s perspective is that he seems to be unaware of the magnitude of the tensions between indigenous Africans and freed slaves. Tribal chiefs led movements in resistance to European influence, and Thompson is largely ignorant of this. The Temne chiefs who sold Freetown to British abolitionists initiated a series of misunderstandings that would later incite conflict between the groups. This founded some of the conflicts between indigenous Africans and Europeans, but Tribal chiefs were not only provoked by European influence. The decline of the slave trade also meant that tribal ... • 43. Perseverance Through Madness In Allen Ginsberg s Howl There is a stereotype that the best minds of a generation are the heroes of their generations, making new discoveries that can alter the course of history. While this holds true most of the time, Allen Ginsberg s 1956 poem Howl offers a different perspective. In Howl, Ginsberg chronicles the chaotic lives of the best minds of [his] generation, using graphic language that eventually landed the publishers of the poem in court for a lawsuit, which was documented in the 2010 film Howl. Howl suggests that education and intellect provides the ability to persevere through madness as well as the ability to exhibit resistance to the self destruction that madness has the potential to invoke. The poem effectively communicates this message through its repeated refrains, juxtaposition, and allusion. The theme of perseverance through madness is more prominent in the poem than in the film, yet it can still be recognized with close attention. The movie also serves as a solid resource in understanding the context of the poem within Ginsberg s own life. Howl is divided into three parts, with a last section titled Footnote to Howl. Each part of the poem is distinguished by a repetitive line structure. In Part 1, most of the lines start with the word who which is followed by a verb in the past tense. The repetitive structure of Part 1 is essential to understanding the theme of Howl as it emphasizes the lifestyle of madness that the great minds are dealing with. This is done ... Cloud Computing And The Cloud Essay INTRODUCTION The definition of the Cloud Computing is broad enough to cover everything such as web search and photo sharing to social networking etc. Perhaps the key point is simply that cloud computing resources should be accessible by the customers/end users anytime, anywhere, and from any platform over internet on pay for use basis. Broadly, the cloud can be described as on demand computing, fix anyone with a network connection. Access to applications and data anywhere, anytime from any device is the potential outcome. The cloud refers to wide area networks, generally the intent from which remote computing resources are shared as shown in the Fig 1.1. The cloud reduces costs and complexity and provides scalability. The biggest advantage that the cloud brings is to reduce costs and improve efficiency. An institution can rely on the pay as you go characteristic of the three pillars of cloud: PaaS and Saas. Ease of maintenance increase efficiency as the pain of maintaining the software is now shifted to the cloud service provider. Cloud computing customers do not need to own the physical infrastructure; rather they use the resources from a third party provider on rental basis. This helps them to avoid huge effort for the setup of the infrastructure. The End user consumes the resources as a service and pay only for resources that they consume.
