Social policy refers to the policies used by government for welfare and social protection (Spicker, P.)
that are usually made by central Government and implemented by local authorities to tackle current
social issues such as poverty and racism. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have now devolved
and have their own laws and legislations on several issues.
This essay will explore three contemporary issues in relation to social policy, whilst supporting these
issues with legislation and economic context for each issue.
The three issues that will be explored are: Welfare, Health and Pensions. Defining social policy, and
understanding social policy becomes imperative, to enable understanding of the contemporary issues
within it.
Social policy was introduced in the early 19th Century, post war. At this time, William Beveridge
introduced the idea of a Welfare State to address poverty. He released a report for social reform known
as the five giants within society: squalor, disease, ignorance, idleness and want. The welfare state
brought many positive improvements in Britain and Government passed reforms to address the
poverty levels, introducing cradle to grave support. The National Health Service was set up which
gave free health care to all and laws and Acts were put in place to help the young, the old, the sick the
unemployed and the working class in times of need. The five issues raised by Beveridge

YES! The perfect opportunity has arisen. Today Helena wanted to send a letter to Demetrius, and off
course I had sneak peak. Apparently Helena has been working on a love letter to try and change
Demetrius feelings towards her.
I must say it was the most beautiful love letter I ve ever seen. If Demetrius received this letter he
would instantly fall in love with her. That would mean that the love couples would be paired off and
there would be no love triangle; everything would be solved.
That s not going to happen.

So being the diabolical genius that I am, I made a second letter that made it look like it was meant for

impress his final instructions and encouragement onto Timothy. Within the letter of 2 Timothy, Paul
encouraged Timothy through five prominent subjects ; foundations of Christian service, chapter of
metaphors, the last days, God inspired Scriptures and Paul s farewell (Jensen 1981, 396 398).
Paul writes about the burdens of his heart, he does this to inspire and challenge his young successor

I will measure the length and cross sectional area for each chip.
o Time the chip is left in the solution I think that if I were to leave the chips in the solution for only a
small amount of time there might not be sufficient time for the osmosis to occur, so that the chips
would not differ in size enough for conclusive results. Therefore, I will need to give a good amount of
time for the osmosis to occur.
o Temperature I believe that all reactions happen quicker when there is a higher temperature, so
diffusion across the membrane may be faster at higher temperature.
o Concentration of sucrose solution I think that the lower the concentration of the external sucrose
solution, the more the chip will expand (because the cells become turgid).
o Total Volume of sucrose solution I think that changing the volume of sucrose solution may affect the
results of my investigation.
Variable I will change:
I will change the concentration of sucrose solution in my experiment, because I believe the results of
that experiment will tell me the water potential of the potato cells.
Fair Test
I will carry out all my experiments at the same temperature, 20°C, because that is room temperature,
