How Is Wisdom Presented In When Siddhartha
Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it. These immortal words
were spoken by one of the greatest thinking minds in recent history none other than Albert Einstein.
Many thinkers throughout history have picked up on this discrepancy between knowledge and
wisdom, despite the two words often being used interchangeably in everyday life. The divide between
knowledge and wisdom is excellently portrayed in the novel Siddhartha written by Hermann Hesse, in
which the main character Siddhartha s journey to find inner peace leads him through the theme of
wisdom and knowledge being obtained differently. In Siddhartha, many themes are presented, but the
one that is the most important both in influencing the story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As he left Gotama, he became filled with determination to stop shying away from the world, and to
embrace it and learn from it instead. Siddhartha felt a type of rebirth at this revelation, seeing the
beauty of the world and all that he has missed out on by focusing on the invisible world. He says I
want to begin my thoughts and my life with Atman and with the suffering of the world. With that,
Siddhartha sets off with a new mission: to live. Along this newfound path toward wisdom, Siddhartha
becomes acquainted with a beautiful female courtesan named Kamala. She teaches Siddhartha to revel
in the pleasures and riches of the world and he is happy, seeing the appeal of a worldly life for the first
time. Many years pass and Siddhartha becomes increasingly unhappy with his life of riches, feeling as
though he has no goals anymore. The novel goes so far as to say that slowly the disease of the soul,
which rich people have, grabbed hold of him. Siddhartha may have obtained wisdom from the
experience, but he became to immersed and lost sight of the reasons he sought a lavish life in the first
place. Through this extended path of worldliness, Siddhartha began to focus too heavily on gaining the
wisdom that comes with the suffering of the world. He forgot all about the knowledge he had
previously obtained, knowledge that may have guided

Unilateralist Foreign Policy Analysis
Firstly, it s vital to be familiar with that U.S. pursues a unilateralist foreign policy since post WWII.
The U.S. has an interest of maintaining geopolitical stability is predicated on its being a superpower
with global economic interests. The U.S. aims to act unilaterally by maintaining a force structure that
can conduct simultaneous expeditionary military operations in widely separated theaters around the
world against multiple adversaries who may not even be natural allies (Liu). The core of the foreign
policy as Dobriansky describes it as the pursuit of our goals, our first imperative is to clarify what we
stand for: the United States must defend liberty and justice because these principles are right and true

The Apartheid Of The Vietnam War
In the year 1959, the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) protested the Vietnam War and other
injustices within America, and they only dissented peacefully. But from this came another
organization so radical that other radical liberals disowned them. The group stemmed from SDS and
many of their members originated in the peaceful movement; however, they grew tired of the
miniscule results of nonviolence. The association was ready to do more than hold up signs and hope
that someone would listen. They were prepared to destroy and they were prepared for people to get
hurt. They were the Weathermen. Their violence ranged from the destruction of buildings, to the injury
and murder of innocents and police. Primarily, The Weathermen aimed to ... Show more content on

In order to advocate for the end of the Vietnam War, SDS used forms of resistance that seemed to be
too radical for most other groups of the time. One action that set them apart from others was their
defiance of the government as they refused to be drafted for the war and on some occasions would
openly set fire to the letters. Some significant members of SDS, such as Bernardine Dohrn and John
Jacobs, wished to hold all of the leadership roles in the association. Attempting to differentiate
themselves from other sects of SDS, Jacobs wrote the Weatherman Paper and marked it with the
signatures of other members including Dohrn, Jeff Jones, Mark Rudd, Bill Ayers, Terry Robbins, Jim
Mellen, and Howie Machtinger. The paper did not address issues separately; it composed all concerns
into one global struggle of the oppressed versus the oppressors. After the election of the Weathermen
as the leaders of SDS, the group became a reality. While the focus of the Weathermen at the time was
ending America s destructive presence in Vietnam, they had other goals in the long run. Because of
their objective to end racism, the organization had hoped to bring in many African American members
and be able to fight with groups such as the Black Panthers; however, the group remained
predominantly white as almost no black Americans wanted to join. The Weathermen also aimed to
break gender stereotypes and sexism, and developed new rules surrounding monogamy. Every

Impact Of The French And Indian War
4) What was the impact of the Seven Years War (i.e., French and Indian War)? on the emergence of
American nationalism?
Almost 50 years of contention amongst Britain and France over North America was resolved in the
French and Indian War. At the point when the war started, there were more than around 2 million
British colonists already in America and around 65,000 French in Canada. The French focused to
secure the land against outside traders, and so they created a chain of posts along Pennsylvania s
Allegheny River. The British requested colonist governors to stop the French progress, by force if
essential. Congress affirmed the arrangement of managing Native American trade, and so on, however
the colonies declined to confirm it. In 1758, the British, with colonial powers helping, seized
Louisbourg, a French fort guarding the St. Lawrence River. In 1759, British powers traveled up the St.
Louis River, laid attack on the city of Québec for three months, and vanquished French powers in
September. The following year, Montreal additionally surrendered to the British, finishing the war in
America. The war arrived at an official end in 1763, with the marking of the Treaty of Paris. The
bargain gave Britain all French land in Canada aside from two small islands south of Newfoundland.
Essentially, triumphant Britain kept Canada as opposed to the vanquished slave colonies of
Guadeloupe and Martinique, which returned back to France.

Example Of A Political Cartoon
c. In this political cartoon, there is an American citizen depicted in both 2008 and 2016 expressing his
views of that year s president elect. In 2008, the citizen says, Anyone can become president, and
Barack Obama is pictured by his side. The citizen is grinning, looking at President Obama with wide
eyes and excitement. Alongside that depiction, the citizen is again shown in 2016. He is saying again,
Anyone can become president, however this time Donald Trump is standing by his side. This time the
citizen is sad and looks disappointed.
d. The cartoonist of this political cartoon is demonstrating the views of many American people after
Donald Trump was elected president compared to their views when Barack Obama was elected. In
2008, most were excited that we would have the first African American president. It showed, like the
citizen in the cartoon is saying, that anyone can become president in the United States. It demonstrated
the large racial barrier that was broken by Obama ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cartoonist in this political cartoon is clearly depicting the brutality and aftermath of this election.
By showing Hillary and Trump with bruises and cuts each of their own, it shows that each of them
took violent swings at the other. This means that they each were nasty to each other during the election
and made some pretty big impacts on the other s campaign. By showing Uncle Sam, who is in a USA
Democracy shirt, being the most beat up out of the three of them, it shows how America and the
American government has taken the biggest beating of them all during this election. American
democracy has been seriously wounded by this election because of the harshness of each of the
candidates and the illegitimacy of each of them as well. Both of them have not been a good and
genuine example of what the American democracy calls for in a leader. The point of view of the

Introduction
When one speak of the word diversity, odds are the first thing that comes to mind is either race or
gender, when in fact it is a whole lot more that can be considered and not just race alone. It can be
diverse ideas, diverse training, diverse cultural, diverse academic abilities, and diverse skills. Diversity
Management is the practice of recognizing and supporting multiple lifestyles and personal
characteristics within a group of people. In today s workplace diversity is not a norm but also an
encouraged workplace makeup from employees, shareholders, government, and employers. Diversity

Summary
Some direct opposite results of an ineffective diversity management program is poor top level
management and low and poor organization visibility. (Human Resource Management) Poor
leadership can lead to poor organization morale, low employee retention and commitment, and
ultimately organizational failure.

Leadership Reflection Paper
Leadership is a very broad topic that encompasses many aspects. Throughout my time in the Coast
Guard I have had many good and bad leaders and have learned from both of their styles. My first unit,
CGC ELDERBERRY, had eight members with an Officer in Charge, then BMCS Woody Woodell,
who literally led from the front. I knew it was not normal for an E8 to wash dishes at the time but I
didn t fully appreciate that fact until much later. When at PACTACLET as an E5 the Commanding
Officer, then LCDR Pat DeQuattro, allowed for any member to hold any qualification regardless of
rank or title. On the challenging side of Leadership, I worked for an Officer in Charge who I felt took
my disagreement with him behind closed doors in the open and was too entrenched in rank to listen to
the messenger rather than the message. Those snapshots in time and others experiences have led me to
believe that Leadership is a way of doing things that encourages others to not only want to accomplish
a mission but have the freedom to make decisions as the most efficient way to accomplish that
mission. In order to enhance and promote Leadership, I will focus on three things; developing
cooperative relationships, taking calculated risks and supporting the team. There are three
relationships that need to be developed, up the chain, down the chain and most importantly laterally.
That lateral leadership will best be accomplished for me by having a robust and active Chief s Mess. I

My Love Of Books And Language
My love of books and language began in an unexpected way. When I was eight years old, my sister
and I switched rooms, and I was given the larger one. In revenge, my sister convinced my parents to
use this room as the family library. At the time I was furious at the thought of books taking the place
of my doll collection and having to move my stuffed animals to the attic. But I soon grew accustomed
to falling asleep facing a wall of novels arranged in alphabetical order. And when I could not fall
asleep, I played a game that I loved. I would choose a title, say The Visit on the second shelf, at the
end of the D section, asking myself, what visit could be so important that an entire book would be
written about it? Then it dawned on me; my parents frequently said, Don t rest your elbows on the
table, you couldn t eat like that if the Queen of England was coming. This was the most important
visitor I could think of. Maybe this story took place out in the British countryside and she was riding
in her carriage, and decided to visit the family of a farmer. It might have been around tea time and
they were eating scones and strawberry jelly...slowly I would nod off to sleep amid my fantastic
adventures from Jude the Obscure to Zorba the Greek. Growing up, I began to read the works that
filled my room, I even learned that Far from the Madding Crowd was not really about a fugitive trying
to run away from a crowd of crazy people. I learned to love novels and poetry. It was

Ph and Buffers Lab
Buffers, and pH, and Diffusion oh my The pH of a solution is the measure of the concentration of
charged Hydrogen ions in that given solution. A solution with a pH lower than seven is considered to
be acidic. A solution with a higher pH is a base. It is very important for organisms to maintain a stable
pH. Biological molecules such as proteins function only at a certain pH level and any changes in pH
can result in them not functioning properly. To maintain these constant pH levels, buffer solutions are
used. A buffer solution can resist change to small additions of acids or base s. A good buffer will have
components that act like a base, and components that act like an acid. Diffusion is random movement

The next experiment was to test diffusion in agar solution. A petri dish with a layer of solidified agar
had four holes punched in it using a No. 5 cork borer. Three holes were punched in a triangle shape
with the fourth hole directly in the middle. There should be 15 mm between each outside hole and the
middle hole. The three outside holes were filled with one drop each of potassium bromide, potassium
Terri cyanide, and sodium chloride. The middle hole was filled with a drop of silver nitrate. It is very
important to make sure that none of the holes overflow. After each has been filled allow to sit for an
hour and observe the results. In the final experiment we filled a dialysis bag with starch solution and
tied off both ends of the bag so that it is water tight. We then filled a separate bag with sodium
chloride and submerge both dialysis bags in two beakers of distilled water. We allowed the bags to sit
in the water for 10 minutes. We then put silver nitrate into the water that held the dialysis bag filled
with sodium chloride and recorded any changes in the water. We then added iodine to the water that
held the dialysis bag of starch and observed any changes in the water.

Adler s The Neglect Of The Intellect Sloth
In his article The Neglect of the Intellect: Sloth, Mortimer J. Adler asserts that the disuse of a person s
intellect is a moral injustice. Adler coins the term sloth to describe the people committing this moral
crime. He believes that people should use their intellectual abilities for their own personal pleasure
rather than for economic or political gain. Adler employs an aggressive tone when describing the
abuse of the intellect, and appeals to the reader s emotion when portraying intellect as a way the only
way to live a morally good life. Adler s purpose is to convince his readers that intellect should be used
solely for the purpose of increasing knowledge. While Adler s article gives a reasonably convincing
argument about learning for your own well being, he fails to support his claims, baffles his readers
with the overuse of intelligent sounding words, and neglects to explain why you should be intellectual
just for the sake of it. Alder fails to support his claims. Because of this, his claims come across as
opinions, not allegations. In paragraph 4, Adler says, Sloth is a moral fault, but unlike injustice that
results in misconduct toward others, sloth is a moral fault that causes the misconduct of the individual
s private life. This quote demonstrates how Adler makes a statement, but never elaborates on it. He
calls the sloth a moral fault, but doesn t explain how that is true. Adler also mentions that your private
life will be affected, but never precedes to explain how that could happen. Another example is when
Adler states, But there are a great many more who have sufficient ability to make the effort and fail to
do so (paragraph 3). Adler neglects to explain to the reader how this statement is true. He later lists the
activities of the people he referred to engage in, but he never demonstrates an example of failure to
use their intellectual abilities. Adler s failure to support his claims discredits his argument. Throughout
his article, Adler uses intellectual language that can make it hard for his audience to read. Words he
uses like lethargy and torpor take away from the purpose of his article. Adler is trying to convince his
audience to seek knowledge for enjoyment, but his

The Smoke Signals Forgiveness Essay
The Smoke Signals Forgiveness
Smoke Signals, written by Sherman Alexie and directed by Chris Eyre, begins on July 4, 1976 on the
Coeur d Alene Reservation. Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), drunk while celebrating the independence ,
lit off a firework and set the Builds the Fire residence on fire, killing the parents of Thomas Builds the
Fire. Many people were already asleep in the house when the fire started, so no one saw Arnold s
mistake, which he kept a secret from the whole reservation. Both Thomas Builds the Fire (Evan

that Arnold had died and that someone should probably come down to Phoenix to take care of the
death. This meant that Victor had to take a bus to Phoenix to get Arnold s possessions and drive his
truck back to the reservation. There was just one problem, Victor didn t have the money for a bus pass,
but Thomas did. The catch was, if Thomas gave Victor some money to go to Phoenix, Thomas got to
come along too. Victor had no other choice but to accept the offer. And the journey begins.
Victor and Thomas had never been off the reservation before. They experienced what it s really like to
be a Native American in the real world. On the bus ride there, two white men took their seats and
made rude comments about them being Native Americans. They received a lot of stares and
uncomfortable looks from people as well. The bus ride to Phoenix was hard for Victor because he had
to deal with Thomas talking the whole time. Victor especially didn t like it when Thomas brought up
his father in conversation.
In Phoenix, Thomas and Victor walked many miles through the desert to get to Arnold s old trailer.
Suzy Song lived in a trailer there as well. They met Suzy right away, and she was very helpful. She

that seems significant to address is the middle childhood period. During this stage, the child begins to
start taking on more of a self concept. A child should begin taking the information and life rules that
have been modeled and taught to them in earlier years and acquire their own self esteem and be able to
start assessing their global self worth. Many factors can, however, impact these developmental
achievements (Papalia, Olds, Feldman, Martorell, Papalia, 2012). Erik Erickson described this
psychosocial stage to be one focused on industry versus inferiority. During this stage of the child s
life, the child must acquire skills that are valued in their society. When a child successfully finds that
they can master skills and have the ability to complete tasks, they resolve with the virtue of
competence. Significant to this period is the parents beliefs about their child s competence. In one
longitudual study of U.S. children, it was determined that parents beliefs of their children s
competence in math and sports strongly associated with the children s beliefs. Although this stage is
one when children begin taking on more individuality in thinking and carrying out tasks, this study
shows how much children are still needing positive reinforcement and encouragement from parents to
continue progressing (Papalia, Olds, Feldman, Martorell, Papalia, 2012). R.S. showed interest in
competitive swimming and because his father showed concentrated his support and attention of R.S.
in this area, it most likely motivated R.S. in a sport that he carried into his young adulthood

Thomas Pynchon Accomplishments
Thomas Pynchon is an American author, known for his deep and complex novels. Some say he is the
greatest American author since World War II. Being such a private person, there are only few pictures
of him in the public, and only few interviews with him. By using satire, irony, and symbolism, he
showcased the moral flaws in humans at that time in society. Doing so he influenced many future
writers, and artists, as well as the literature world. Pynchon is known for being part of the
postmodernism movement in literature.
Born on May 8th 1937, in New York, he is the descendent of William Pynchon, the founder of

Why People Are Afraid Of Immigrants In Canada
Society in Canada
The reason that people are afraid of immigrants it is because it brings a change in a society. They don t

the houses they build, or the way they live. This is a backlash racism , or reactive racism often targets

being job stealers, inflating the real estate, having a monster house, taking advantage of welfare,

they take jobs that the Canadian abandoned or did not want to take it. Asians were also working on a

Cultural Beliefs In The Odyssey By Beowulf
In The Odyssey, the Cyclops symbolizes cultural values straying from the norm of society, while in
Beowulf, Grendel symbolizes the consequences of not conforming to those values.
In The Odyssey, Homer uses the Cyclops to encapsulate values which are considered abnormal in
everyday society. The beasts are culturally, politically and religiously detached from civilization.
Homer describes the one eyed beasts, They have no meeting place for council, no laws either, no, up
on the mountain peaks they live in arching caverns each a law to himself, ruling his wives and
children, not a care in the world for any neighbor (9.125 128) In ancient greek society family and
community were heavily valued, however it seems that each Cyclops wants nothing to do with the
others, revealing them as cultural outsiders who wouldn t be accepted among humanity. Additionally,
the brutes have no meeting place for council, no laws either. The Odyssey was written in the 8th
century BC, during the beginnings of Archaic Greece. City states were the popular form of
government and communal decision making started to gain value. In stark contrast to this form of
politics, the Cyclops made decisions for themselves, rarely communicating with anyone but their own
families. Their governmental actions stray far from the Greeks public standards. Perhaps the largest
difference between the Cyclops and any other Greek citizen though, is their religious difference. The
Cyclops boasts to Odysseus, We Cyclops

Georg Znaeym, that have been enemies since they were born. Their families have had a rivalry for two
generations because of a worthless piece of land. Ulrich is in control of the land but George is illegally
hunting on his property, and that makes Ulrich furious. Throughout the story i have noticed that the
setting changes and that is the cause of the mood of the story. In the beginning of the story, It is a dark
night and Ulrich hopes to meet Georg in the middle of the woods. When they do meet up, they are

throughout the story, but the mood has changed. The conflict between Ulrich and Georg at the
beginning of the story were enemies and had no interest in becoming friends but in the end they learn
to become friends. When they believe that they are saved by their men, they are visited by a pack of
nine to ten wolves. The wolves become the interlopers because they stop them from becoming friends
and then the story ends. At this point of the story the setting was almost the same, only the mood was
different. Ulrich and George are still pinned down under the tree, only now they are surrounded by
wolves making the mood sad and suspenseful. The sad part of the mood is created because at this part
of the story you realize that they will no longer be friends. The suspense comes from the wolves just
surrounding them and the writer not letting us know what the wolves do to Ulrich and Georg at the
end of the story. The story the The Interlopers, has a setting that contributes to the mood of the story.

A Sample Of 102 Full Time Business School Faculty At A...
Stumpf and Rabinowitz (1981) studied career stage and performance in a sample of 102 full time
business school faculty at a large north eastern university, hypothesizing that the relationships between
role perception, job satisfaction and performance would differ across career stages. They used Hall
and Nougaim s (1968) three stage model: 1. The establishment stage included those in the profession
two years or less, 2. Advancement included faculty with between two years and ten years experience,
and 3. Maintenance included faculty with more than ten years experience. The faculty completed
questionnaires on their satisfaction with work, promotion, pay, and co workers; role conflict; and role
ambiguity. Performance measures included publications, student evaluations of teaching, peer
nominations for excellence, and salary change. The authors developed hypotheses, based on
developmental theory, about how attitudes and perceptions would relate to performance at the various
stages. The establishment stage, for example, should be characterized by a strong positive relationship
between satisfaction with work and performance measures. This reflects the primary task of the
establishment stage, that of learning the ropes. Faculty who express satisfaction with their work at this
stage must be comfortable with the new position and could be expected to do well on performance
measures. In contrast, the advancement stage should show a strong positive relationship between

Dan Savage Character Analysis
Just by looking at him, you aren t going to know that Dan Savage is a newspaper column writer for
The Stranger, that founded It Gets Better, a multimedia organization to inspire and assist LGBTQ+
youth.
People need heroes because everyone needs somebody to look up to. Dan is my hero because not only
is he standing up for a community, but he doesn t have to do anything about the problems in the
community if he doesn t feel like doing it.
In my own opinion, Dan Savage holds the characteristic of brave. He shows bravery when he stands
up for who and what he believes in and that takes bravery since there will always be people against
him and his beliefs in some way or another so he has to be brave enough to stay standing and to
continue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He shows compassion by reaching out and helping LGBTQ+ youth with problems they face like
bullying, family rejection, and self harm. I feel that he shows sympathy and/or empathy for the
problems the youth of this community are facing, since he is part of the community himself, and may
have gone through the same problems.
Now, your opinion may be different from mine, and you may not think that Dan could be described as
unprejudiced. Although, he has shown the trait of unprejudiced by starting the It Gets Better
organization. If he was Prejudiced, the organization most likely never would have started. It may have
even been started, but for the complete opposite reason; to go against LGBTQ+ youth, rather than be
for them. However, the past statements are not the case, and he started the organization with the intent
of helping the individuals that need it.
People need heroes because everyone needs somebody to look up to. Dan Savage is my hero on
account of him being brave, compassionate, and unprejudiced. Considering all of the above, Dan
Savage, newspaper column writer for The Stranger, that started the It Gets Better organization for
LGBTQ+ youth, is my hero. Seeing that he holds traits that go towards my definition of the word,
Hero; A leader who can stand up and care about what they believe in without other people s judgement

Vietnam War vs. Greasy Lake War in T.C. Boyle s Short...
Sudden and Ironic events that happen to the narrator in T.C. Boyle s short story Greasy Lake are the
same type of events that in an instant will change a person forever. The ironic circumstances that the
narrator in Greasy Lake finds himself in are the same circumstances that young people find
themselves in when fighting war. The viewpoint of the world that the narrator has, completely alters as
certain events take place throughout the story. His outlook on nature transforms into a wholly different
standpoint as the story progresses. As his tale begins, the narrator sees himself as a tough guy or bad

The kids in the story are 19 years old, it takes place the summer after their first year of college.
College is the reason kids of that age are at Greasy lake and not fighting in war. The outlook the
narrator has on life before his experience at Greasy lake is the same attitude kids going into war had.
His perception of the world after what happens at Greasy lake is the same perception men who have
fought in battle and seen death have. Nothing about life is the same for the narrator after all that
happens to him at Greasy lake. Nothing in life is ever the same for the young kids who fought and got
caught up in the stupidity of war during Vietnam. Much of the story relates to the Vietnam war. We
were nineteen. We were bad. We read Andre Gide and struck elaborate poses to show that we didn t
give a shit about anything. At night we went up to Greasy Lake. The attitude the speaker of these
words has is the same attitude the cocky, nineteen year old kids had as they went off to fight war. I
wanted to get out of the car and retch, I wanted to go home to my parents house and crawl into bed.
The honesty and fear spoken with these words symbolize the change of attitude the young Vietnam
soldiers had after experiencing the horrors of war. The characters in Greasy Lake learn that they are
not tough bad characters but scared children who are alone and lost in the world, the kids who fought
battle in Vietnam went

Estimating the Cost of Capital In order to calculate the cost of capital of Ameritrade we will use the
Capital Asset Pricing Model. This model helps estimate the required rate of return of a certain
investment for the given risk. In the case of Ameritrade, we can use this method by finding the most
accurate risk free rate, market risk premium and asset beta. We can then find the return on assets by
using the following formula: Ra= Rf+ βa (Rm Rf) To find the asset Beta (βa), we need to find the
weighted average β of equity and the weighted average β of debt. We consider the β of debt to be 0, as
debt has no relationship with market risk and it is evident from the balance sheet that Ameritrade had
no interest bearing debt in 1997[1]. βa=D/(D+E)* βD+E/(D+E)βE βa=D/(D+E) *0+E/(D+E)βE So
βa=E/(D+E)βE Estimating the Risk free rate The historic average returns from 1950 to 1996 and from
1929 to 1996 are given In Exhibit 3. We chose the latter time period as we considered it would give us
a more reliable estimate of the risk free rate by discounting both the Second World War and the Great
Depression. It is necessary to evaluate the expected length of the project and utilize a risk free rate
applicable for the same time period. Ameritrade is investing $100 million dollars in technology, which
is considered a long term investment, in order to become the largest brokerage firm. We consider their

Comparison Of Crime And Victimless Crimes
A broad range of crimes are committed in the United States, though the most publicized and often the
most remembered are those committed against persons. While robberies or drug use may be
recognized by some as major problems, it is often crimes such as assault, murder, or rape which stick
in people s minds. Crimes against persons are a category of crime that consists of offenses that usually
involve causing or attempting to cause bodily harm or a threat of bodily harm (study.com). Also
considered to be crimes against persons are domestic violence, assault, and stalking. Needless to say,
there are laws imposed against these crimes, and the penalties are often much more sever that with
victimless crimes or property crimes. Interestingly, crimes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the same time, the law also increased funding for the FBI, DEA, INS, US Attorneys and other
aspects of the Justice Department. Certain weapon bands are employed; the death penalty is expanded,
creates new categories for certain offenses, and creates the three strikes rule (ncjrs.gov). Needless to
say, this law has such a wide range of jurisdiction on all aspects of crime, and is widely influential on
the handling of crimes against persons. I find the aforementioned Three Strikes Law to be especially
impactful on crimes against persons, as the law essentially states that if you are convicted of three
crimes considered to meet a certain degree of heinous, imprisonment for life is going to be the next
punishment. Essentially, this law allows someone to go to prison for life based on the third offense,
regardless of how minor this offense may be, if they have two prior convictions on serious crimes
(law.stanford.edu). These laws have made huge progress in creating a sense of concern in potential
criminals minds, knowing the punishments, and with the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement
Act, the expanded budgetary constraints allowed a much bigger

Horses act without worry for their actions. Flaubert describes Rodolphe as having trampled on horses

careless nature, not concerning themselves with what they step in. The horses, like Rodolphe, act
carelessly in where they step and move. As Rodolphe and Emma ride together the horses as they

Rodolphe, act without a concern for the implications of their actions and function in a mainly primal

Durkheim And Weber s Theories Of Religion And Modernity
Emile Durkheim and Max Weber are two prominent philosophers whose theories unequivocally
differed on countless themes. The outlooks of Durkheim and Weber contrast however, their general
message in which they attempt to convey are of similar ideologies. When examining Durkheim and
the concept of sacred and profane, one would see how it parallels with Weber s notion of enchantment
and disenchantment. Their stances on religion correspond with each other and despite their distinct
conceptual frameworks and differing perspectives, Durkheim and Weber both offer profound
contributions to the concepts of religion and modernity. Durkheim and Weber both had distinct
theories as they expressed and conceptualized religion and it s impact to society in quite different
ways however, they somehow overall parallel each others theories. Durkheim observed religion in the
context of the integrated society and recognized its place in affecting the reasoning and conduct of
society.Max Weber saw religion as how it fortifies other social organizations. Weber suspected that the
religious belief setup contributed a social system that SUPPORTED the improvement of other social
organizations, like the economy. Weber is also addressing the shrinking hold of religion in modern
society. (Veugelers) This notionally theorizes that both philosophers acknowledge the importance of
religion as influencing and supporting society. As indicated by Durkheim, people consider religion to

Causes Of The Haitian Revolution
Whenever resistance is practiced, the collaboration of different identities is necessary in order to
successfully take action against an opposition. These diverse identities can be racially different,
sexually different, or even socially different, but still all have one common goal of practicing
resistance. Freed slaves of mixed ancestry in Haiti played more important and powerful roles in
plantation societies than blacks, such as catching slaves and gaining control over blacks. Although the
mixed Haitians had different social identities from African slaves, these groups still collaborated in the
Haitian revolution. Mixed Haitians, called Gens De Couleur or Mulattoes, had more power than
blacks, which created a racial hierarchy that acted as the cornerstone for the Haitian slave rebellion.
The different groups of non whites recognized the inequality, though on different scales for each class,
and revolted against the French for enforcing these inequalities. With the collaboration of Affranchis
(freed slaves) and African slaves, the Haitian Revolution transpired, leading to the rebellion against
French colonial rule, and thus an anti slavery nation led by non whites. As described by Michael A.
Gomez in Reversing Sail , the conditions of slavery in Haiti were degrading. In Saint Domingue, the
increase in demand for sugarcane and indigo production increased a need for African slaves. So many
slaves were needed, that between 1680 and 1776, 700,000 Africans were brought to

Comparing Ecotopia And Thomas More s Utopian Genre
The Utopian genre has evolved over a number of decades in order to experiment with changing values
and ideals of the ever evolving societies of the times. Thomas More s Utopia defined a new literary
genre within the 16th century and onwards, allowing for an array of texts to explore the particular
ideals and values that were often preached during the respective time period but never formally
recognized. This is also the case for Ernest Callenbach s Ecotopia, a utopian text written in the 1970s,
attaching fundamental importance to the restoration of the natural world and the feminist values of
Ecotopian society. The development of the genre from the 16th to 20th centuries is evident through the
differences in principles that are addressed in each text, all of which are a reflection of the values of
their respective time periods.

How Religion Shaped Roman Culture
One of the main bases of Roman culture is Religion. In fact, almost everything the Roman citizens did
revolved around beliefs, gods, and goddesses. Not only was their way of living affected by religion
but the progression of advancement in infrastructure and early forms of technology were as well. By
examining Roman baths and temples, defixiones, and Romanization of the provinces of the empire it
is clear that religion helped to shape Roman advancements in infrastructure and early forms of
technology during this time. Aquae Sulis and its baths are a perfect example of how religion affected
Roman life and culture. Romans took mineral springs of hot water, declared them sacred, and
transformed them into huge public baths and temples for worship. For the Romans believed that
emerging one s self into the hot water would bring healing from the goddess Sulis. Without religious
beliefs their desire for elaborate worship centers would not exist. As a result, the advanced and
fascinating Roman structures found in the city of Aquae Sulis may not have been built either. ... Show

first happens when Catherine called the police. She calls and reports she has seen a car accident, but as

with how long this will take? Even with the possibility of someone being dead inside that car, her
biggest concern is time? This is emphasized as a car barrels down the road next to her not even
bothering to stop. What our filmmakers are trying to do is appeal to our humanity. They want us to
feel the connection to the world and to the woman in the car, only to shut us down like so many of us
have shut the world out. This aspect of the film is what makes it so incredibly upsetting yet
enlightening. We witness a connection between Catherine and the woman in the car and then it is
taken away from us without a second thought. After the car crash Catherine calls the woman hoping to
develop some sort of relationship but is disappointed when the woman wants nothing to do with her.
The audience feels just as disappointed but why? This is the purpose of the film. The filmmakers so

Temperament Categories
1. How would you describe your own temperament? (Do you think you were an easy child, a difficult
child, or a slow to warm up child?)
As an infant and toddler, I don t think that I fell under one temperament category. I spent my infancy
and toddler years in a village in the mountains of Mexico. In consequence, I had to deal with poverty,
lack of resources, and the absence of my mother for most of those years. For those reasons, I believe
that I probably had characteristics from of the temperament categories. My mother had told me that as
an infant if she couldn t find anyone to watch me, she would take me with her to the fields and leave
me at the end of her rows and check on me when she made her way back. Hearing these kinds of
stories makes me believe that I had to adapt and overcome many different situations depending on my
environment at that time. I can compare this to the goodness of fit theory mentioned in the book on
page 189. As an adolescent, I went through some traumas and I would describe myself to be more of a
difficult type of temperament.

William Clover, talking about his experience in Lyon, the second largest city in France in his book The
French Don t Diet Plan, says, A... search on the official Lyon website revealed that there are no gyms
in that city. This might confuse some people, as they think about the thin, and small waistlines of our
Parisian counterparts. How can people not work out, but still say so thin? The answer is simple, they
get their exercise elsewhere. They are very active people, while Americans are often lazy, or only
exercise without taking diet into consideration. Actually, before 1953, it was common knowledge that
exercise could cause heart attacks and diminish sex drive. That was until a study in 1953 showed that
a fat and a skinny mouse ate the exact same, but had a difference due to the fat mouse s unhealthy
habit of not exercising on his wheel. Fast forward to 1980, and in the next two decades, fitness club
memberships doubled. The only problem is, obesity rates doubled as well. Billions went to trying to
lose weight, and a fitness revolution sparked across the nation. It was easily seen that gyms were
expanding, but waistlines expanded as well, and a decade later, two thirds of Americans were
overweight or obese.

Color Symbolism In The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby is one of the greatest novels ever written. It is best remembered
and spoken about for it s color symbolism. The main reason to why color symbolism is a studied topic
in this novel is because the writer was also a painter. F.Scott Fitzgerald uses the colors gray, blue and
yellow to symbolize hopelessness, loneliness, and new money throughout the novel. Fitzgerald uses
the color gray to give the reader a darkened negative visual of what was occurring in the novel.
Occasionally a line of gray cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak, and comes
to rest... . In this passage, the color gray in the novel leaves the reader with a dark and empty vibe and
visual throughout the novel. Nick is

Disadvantages Of Public Transport
I. Introduction (Christian Matthew Carbonell)
Everyday people would take different forms of transport simply because of some occasions and
obligations to attend to. Many people prefer using public transportation vehicles because they don t
have the budget to buy their own cars or because no one would accompany them to their destination.
Most people would wake up very early and set their time. Some would record how long and how fast
they should be taking a transport. Recording the time of walking to the transportation terminal, the
amount of time inside, and going to work or school is a good way for a commuter to develop time
management. No one can really predict what may occur when taking a transport. The recorded time
will not be the same as the next time the person would commute, because there would be unexpected
events that could either delay or hasten travel. It is a person s decision whether to keep going or stop.
A common issue in riding a transport is the limited amount of people are allowed to go inside that
transport. Commuters would usually be stressed, because of technical difficulties or problem. There is

These vehicles may be owned by government entities as public utilities or by private entities for their
own profit. These means of public transport are important to the country s development because most
people need to use mass transport to meet commitments or fulfill obligations like going to school or
work, especially when the places they need to go to are particularly far from where they live.
However, there are many forms of public transport for people to choose from and not all of them
available in a given situation are convenient for the job, so people tend to be choosy with these modes
of transport to

Essay on Kitty Genovese
February 10th, 2011
Take Home Midterm
Intro to Legal Studies
Chapter 1 Question One
The Kitty Genovese story is a tragic one and is a controversial topic when ethics come into play.
Though she screamed for help repeatedly while being stabbed the observers from the surrounding
apartments did very little to assist the young woman. One observer in specific did shout Leave the girl
alone and that deterred the assailant for a brief moment but whether or not he acted ethically is
something of a different matter. According to Duty Base Ethics which by definition states the doctrine
that actions are morally correct if they comply with existing obligations owed another and ourselves,
one could deduct that this observer did not act ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So when asked to take the pro or con of this argument that prospective appointees to the U.S Supreme
Court should publicly divulge their personal philosophies on the largest issues of modern society such
as abortion rights, prayer in public school, etc. I say Pro. Not only should they speak of their beliefs
about these controversial topics, they should do it openly and assertively. It is important for the people
to know the people who are responsible for our government and what they stand for whether we agree
or disagree. Sometimes and understandably public figures or potential public figures are hesitant to
speak on such delicate matters because of the judgment and criticisms that they will have to endure
once that information is out in the open but they must know that this is what comes with being a
public government figure especially the prospective appointees for the U.S Supreme Court. It is their
duty to serve the people and maintaining the integrity of the Constitution, which is what our country
was built on. That is a great responsibility and a very public one so the prospective appointees should
deem it necessary to let the people know who may be possibly carrying the weight of this
responsibility and where they stand on these controversial issues that effect the people of this country.
Chapter 3 Question Three
In the civil trial cases to initiate it there first must be a complaint,

  • 2. How Is Wisdom Presented In When Siddhartha Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it. These immortal words were spoken by one of the greatest thinking minds in recent history none other than Albert Einstein. Many thinkers throughout history have picked up on this discrepancy between knowledge and wisdom, despite the two words often being used interchangeably in everyday life. The divide between knowledge and wisdom is excellently portrayed in the novel Siddhartha written by Hermann Hesse, in which the main character Siddhartha s journey to find inner peace leads him through the theme of wisdom and knowledge being obtained differently. In Siddhartha, many themes are presented, but the one that is the most important both in influencing the story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As he left Gotama, he became filled with determination to stop shying away from the world, and to embrace it and learn from it instead. Siddhartha felt a type of rebirth at this revelation, seeing the beauty of the world and all that he has missed out on by focusing on the invisible world. He says I want to begin my thoughts and my life with Atman and with the suffering of the world. With that, Siddhartha sets off with a new mission: to live. Along this newfound path toward wisdom, Siddhartha becomes acquainted with a beautiful female courtesan named Kamala. She teaches Siddhartha to revel in the pleasures and riches of the world and he is happy, seeing the appeal of a worldly life for the first time. Many years pass and Siddhartha becomes increasingly unhappy with his life of riches, feeling as though he has no goals anymore. The novel goes so far as to say that slowly the disease of the soul, which rich people have, grabbed hold of him. Siddhartha may have obtained wisdom from the experience, but he became to immersed and lost sight of the reasons he sought a lavish life in the first place. Through this extended path of worldliness, Siddhartha began to focus too heavily on gaining the wisdom that comes with the suffering of the world. He forgot all about the knowledge he had previously obtained, knowledge that may have guided ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The U.S. has an interest of maintaining geopolitical stability is predicated on its being a superpower with global economic interests. The U.S. aims to act unilaterally by maintaining a force structure that can conduct simultaneous expeditionary military operations in widely separated theaters around the world against multiple adversaries who may not even be natural allies (Liu). • 4. The Apartheid Of The Vietnam War In the year 1959, the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) protested the Vietnam War and other injustices within America, and they only dissented peacefully. But from this came another organization so radical that other radical liberals disowned them. The group stemmed from SDS and many of their members originated in the peaceful movement; however, they grew tired of the miniscule results of nonviolence. The association was ready to do more than hold up signs and hope that someone would listen. They were prepared to destroy and they were prepared for people to get hurt. They were the Weathermen. Their violence ranged from the destruction of buildings, to the injury and murder of innocents and police. Primarily, The Weathermen aimed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to advocate for the end of the Vietnam War, SDS used forms of resistance that seemed to be too radical for most other groups of the time. One action that set them apart from others was their defiance of the government as they refused to be drafted for the war and on some occasions would openly set fire to the letters. Some significant members of SDS, such as Bernardine Dohrn and John Jacobs, wished to hold all of the leadership roles in the association. Attempting to differentiate themselves from other sects of SDS, Jacobs wrote the Weatherman Paper and marked it with the signatures of other members including Dohrn, Jeff Jones, Mark Rudd, Bill Ayers, Terry Robbins, Jim Mellen, and Howie Machtinger. The paper did not address issues separately; it composed all concerns into one global struggle of the oppressed versus the oppressors. After the election of the Weathermen as the leaders of SDS, the group became a reality. While the focus of the Weathermen at the time was ending America s destructive presence in Vietnam, they had other goals in the long run. Because of their objective to end racism, the organization had hoped to bring in many African American members and be able to fight with groups such as the Black Panthers; however, the group remained predominantly white as almost no black Americans wanted to join. The Weathermen also aimed to break gender stereotypes and sexism, and developed new rules surrounding monogamy. Every member who was in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Impact Of The French And Indian War 4) What was the impact of the Seven Years War (i.e., French and Indian War)? on the emergence of American nationalism? Almost 50 years of contention amongst Britain and France over North America was resolved in the French and Indian War. At the point when the war started, there were more than around 2 million British colonists already in America and around 65,000 French in Canada. The French focused to secure the land against outside traders, and so they created a chain of posts along Pennsylvania s Allegheny River. The British requested colonist governors to stop the French progress, by force if essential. Congress affirmed the arrangement of managing Native American trade, and so on, however the colonies declined to confirm it. In 1758, the British, with colonial powers helping, seized Louisbourg, a French fort guarding the St. Lawrence River. In 1759, British powers traveled up the St. Louis River, laid attack on the city of Québec for three months, and vanquished French powers in September. The following year, Montreal additionally surrendered to the British, finishing the war in America. The war arrived at an official end in 1763, with the marking of the Treaty of Paris. The bargain gave Britain all French land in Canada aside from two small islands south of Newfoundland. Essentially, triumphant Britain kept Canada as opposed to the vanquished slave colonies of Guadeloupe and Martinique, which returned back to France. The Seven Year War was a colossal defining ... Alongside that depiction, the citizen is again shown in 2016. He is saying again, Anyone can become president, however this time Donald Trump is standing by his side. This time the citizen is sad and looks disappointed. d. The cartoonist of this political cartoon is demonstrating the views of many American people after Donald Trump was elected president compared to their views when Barack Obama was elected. • 8. Leadership Reflection Paper Leadership is a very broad topic that encompasses many aspects. Throughout my time in the Coast Guard I have had many good and bad leaders and have learned from both of their styles. My first unit, CGC ELDERBERRY, had eight members with an Officer in Charge, then BMCS Woody Woodell, who literally led from the front. I knew it was not normal for an E8 to wash dishes at the time but I didn t fully appreciate that fact until much later. When at PACTACLET as an E5 the Commanding Officer, then LCDR Pat DeQuattro, allowed for any member to hold any qualification regardless of rank or title. On the challenging side of Leadership, I worked for an Officer in Charge who I felt took my disagreement with him behind closed doors in the open and was too entrenched in rank to listen to the messenger rather than the message. Those snapshots in time and others experiences have led me to believe that Leadership is a way of doing things that encourages others to not only want to accomplish a mission but have the freedom to make decisions as the most efficient way to accomplish that mission. In order to enhance and promote Leadership, I will focus on three things; developing cooperative relationships, taking calculated risks and supporting the team. There are three relationships that need to be developed, up the chain, down the chain and most importantly laterally. That lateral leadership will best be accomplished for me by having a robust and active Chief s Mess. I have recently taken ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In revenge, my sister convinced my parents to use this room as the family library. At the time I was furious at the thought of books taking the place of my doll collection and having to move my stuffed animals to the attic. But I soon grew accustomed to falling asleep facing a wall of novels arranged in alphabetical order. And when I could not fall asleep, I played a game that I loved. I would choose a title, say The Visit on the second shelf, at the end of the D section, asking myself, what visit could be so important that an entire book would be written about it? Then it dawned on me; my parents frequently said, Don t rest your elbows on the table, you couldn t eat like that if the Queen of England was coming. This was the most important visitor I could think of. Maybe this story took place out in the British countryside and she was riding in her carriage, and decided to visit the family of a farmer. It might have been around tea time and they were eating scones and strawberry jelly...slowly I would nod off to sleep amid my fantastic adventures from Jude the Obscure to Zorba the Greek. Growing up, I began to read the works that filled my room, I even learned that Far from the Madding Crowd was not really about a fugitive trying to run away from a crowd of crazy people. A solution with a pH lower than seven is considered to be acidic. A solution with a higher pH is a base. It is very important for organisms to maintain a stable pH. Biological molecules such as proteins function only at a certain pH level and any changes in pH can result in them not functioning properly. To maintain these constant pH levels, buffer solutions are used. A buffer solution can resist change to small additions of acids or base s. • 11. Adler s The Neglect Of The Intellect Sloth In his article The Neglect of the Intellect: Sloth, Mortimer J. Adler asserts that the disuse of a person s intellect is a moral injustice. Adler coins the term sloth to describe the people committing this moral crime. He believes that people should use their intellectual abilities for their own personal pleasure rather than for economic or political gain. Adler employs an aggressive tone when describing the abuse of the intellect, and appeals to the reader s emotion when portraying intellect as a way the only way to live a morally good life. Adler s purpose is to convince his readers that intellect should be used solely for the purpose of increasing knowledge. While Adler s article gives a reasonably convincing argument about learning for your own well being, he fails to support his claims, baffles his readers with the overuse of intelligent sounding words, and neglects to explain why you should be intellectual just for the sake of it. Alder fails to support his claims. Because of this, his claims come across as opinions, not allegations. In paragraph 4, Adler says, Sloth is a moral fault, but unlike injustice that results in misconduct toward others, sloth is a moral fault that causes the misconduct of the individual s private life. This quote demonstrates how Adler makes a statement, but never elaborates on it. He calls the sloth a moral fault, but doesn t explain how that is true. Adler also mentions that your private life will be affected, but never precedes to explain how that could happen. Another example is when Adler states, But there are a great many more who have sufficient ability to make the effort and fail to do so (paragraph 3). Adler neglects to explain to the reader how this statement is true. He later lists the activities of the people he referred to engage in, but he never demonstrates an example of failure to use their intellectual abilities. Adler s failure to support his claims discredits his argument. Throughout his article, Adler uses intellectual language that can make it hard for his audience to read. Words he uses like lethargy and torpor take away from the purpose of his article. Adler is trying to convince his audience to seek knowledge for enjoyment, but his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During this stage, the child begins to start taking on more of a self concept. A child should begin taking the information and life rules that have been modeled and taught to them in earlier years and acquire their own self esteem and be able to start assessing their global self worth. Many factors can, however, impact these developmental achievements (Papalia, Olds, Feldman, Martorell, Papalia, 2012). Erik Erickson described this psychosocial stage to be one focused on industry versus inferiority. During this stage of the child s life, the child must acquire skills that are valued in their society. When a child successfully finds that they can master skills and have the ability to complete tasks, they resolve with the virtue of competence. Significant to this period is the parents beliefs about their child s competence. In one longitudual study of U.S. children, it was determined that parents beliefs of their children s competence in math and sports strongly associated with the children s beliefs. Although this stage is one when children begin taking on more individuality in thinking and carrying out tasks, this study shows how much children are still needing positive reinforcement and encouragement from parents to continue progressing (Papalia, Olds, Feldman, Martorell, Papalia, 2012). In The Odyssey, Homer uses the Cyclops to encapsulate values which are considered abnormal in everyday society. The beasts are culturally, politically and religiously detached from civilization. Homer describes the one eyed beasts, They have no meeting place for council, no laws either, no, up on the mountain peaks they live in arching caverns each a law to himself, ruling his wives and children, not a care in the world for any neighbor (9.125 128) In ancient greek society family and community were heavily valued, however it seems that each Cyclops wants nothing to do with the others, revealing them as cultural outsiders who wouldn t be accepted among humanity. Stumpf and Rabinowitz (1981) studied career stage and performance in a sample of 102 full time business school faculty at a large north eastern university, hypothesizing that the relationships between role perception, job satisfaction and performance would differ across career stages. They used Hall and Nougaim s (1968) three stage model: 1. The establishment stage included those in the profession two years or less, 2. Advancement included faculty with between two years and ten years experience, and 3. Maintenance included faculty with more than ten years experience. The faculty completed questionnaires on their satisfaction with work, promotion, pay, and co workers; role conflict; and role ambiguity. Performance measures included publications, student evaluations of teaching, peer nominations for excellence, and salary change. The authors developed hypotheses, based on developmental theory, about how attitudes and perceptions would relate to performance at the various stages. The establishment stage, for example, should be characterized by a strong positive relationship between satisfaction with work and performance measures. This reflects the primary task of the establishment stage, that of learning the ropes. In the case of Ameritrade, we can use this method by finding the most accurate risk free rate, market risk premium and asset beta. We can then find the return on assets by using the following formula: Ra= Rf+ βa (Rm Rf) To find the asset Beta (βa), we need to find the weighted average β of equity and the weighted average β of debt. We consider the β of debt to be 0, as debt has no relationship with market risk and it is evident from the balance sheet that Ameritrade had no interest bearing debt in 1997[1]. βa=D/(D+E)* βD+E/(D+E)βE βa=D/(D+E) *0+E/(D+E)βE So βa=E/(D+E)βE Estimating the Risk free rate The historic average returns from 1950 to 1996 and from 1929 to 1996 are given In Exhibit 3. Their stances on religion correspond with each other and despite their distinct conceptual frameworks and differing perspectives, Durkheim and Weber both offer profound contributions to the concepts of religion and modernity. Durkheim and Weber both had distinct theories as they expressed and conceptualized religion and it s impact to society in quite different ways however, they somehow overall parallel each others theories. Durkheim observed religion in the context of the integrated society and recognized its place in affecting the reasoning and conduct of society.Max Weber saw religion as how it fortifies other social organizations. Weber suspected that the religious belief setup contributed a social system that SUPPORTED the improvement of other social organizations, like the economy. Weber is also addressing the shrinking hold of religion in modern society. (Veugelers) This notionally theorizes that both philosophers acknowledge the importance of religion as influencing and supporting society. • 29. Causes Of The Haitian Revolution Whenever resistance is practiced, the collaboration of different identities is necessary in order to successfully take action against an opposition. These diverse identities can be racially different, sexually different, or even socially different, but still all have one common goal of practicing resistance. Freed slaves of mixed ancestry in Haiti played more important and powerful roles in plantation societies than blacks, such as catching slaves and gaining control over blacks. Although the mixed Haitians had different social identities from African slaves, these groups still collaborated in the Haitian revolution. Mixed Haitians, called Gens De Couleur or Mulattoes, had more power than blacks, which created a racial hierarchy that acted as the cornerstone for the Haitian slave rebellion. The different groups of non whites recognized the inequality, though on different scales for each class, and revolted against the French for enforcing these inequalities. With the collaboration of Affranchis (freed slaves) and African slaves, the Haitian Revolution transpired, leading to the rebellion against French colonial rule, and thus an anti slavery nation led by non whites. As described by Michael A. Gomez in Reversing Sail , the conditions of slavery in Haiti were degrading. In Saint Domingue, the increase in demand for sugarcane and indigo production increased a need for African slaves. So many slaves were needed, that between 1680 and 1776, 700,000 Africans were brought to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Comparing Ecotopia And Thomas More s Utopian Genre The Utopian genre has evolved over a number of decades in order to experiment with changing values and ideals of the ever evolving societies of the times. Thomas More s Utopia defined a new literary genre within the 16th century and onwards, allowing for an array of texts to explore the particular ideals and values that were often preached during the respective time period but never formally recognized. This is also the case for Ernest Callenbach s Ecotopia, a utopian text written in the 1970s, attaching fundamental importance to the restoration of the natural world and the feminist values of Ecotopian society. The development of the genre from the 16th to 20th centuries is evident through the differences in principles that are addressed in each text, all of which are a reflection of the values of their respective time periods. More s Utopia established the existence of the utopian genre, exhibiting a political vision of 16th century Britain. The composer presents a model of an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only was their way of living affected by religion but the progression of advancement in infrastructure and early forms of technology were as well. By examining Roman baths and temples, defixiones, and Romanization of the provinces of the empire it is clear that religion helped to shape Roman advancements in infrastructure and early forms of technology during this time. Aquae Sulis and its baths are a perfect example of how religion affected Roman life and culture. Romans took mineral springs of hot water, declared them sacred, and transformed them into huge public baths and temples for worship. For the Romans believed that emerging one s self into the hot water would bring healing from the goddess Sulis. Without religious beliefs their desire for elaborate worship centers would not exist. Many people prefer using public transportation vehicles because they don t have the budget to buy their own cars or because no one would accompany them to their destination. Most people would wake up very early and set their time. Some would record how long and how fast they should be taking a transport.
