2. Adolf Hitler Rises to Power in Europe While the U.S....
The instability created in Europe by World War I set the stage for another international conflict World
War II, which broke out two decades later and proved to be even more devastating. Rising to power in
an unstable country, Germany, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party had ambitions of world domination.
Hitler s invasion of Poland in September 1939 drove Great Britain and France to declare war on
Germany, and World War II had begun. Over the next six years, the conflict would take more lives and
destroy more land and property around the globe than any previous war with estimated 45 60 million
casualties (Stevenson). During World War II various codes were used by American soldiers to relay
encrypted messages. The Axis powers, however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of the Navajo language to create a code during World War II was the idea of Philip Johnston,
the son of William and Margaret Johnston who were Protestant missionaries to the Navajo (Holm 71).
Johnston was born and raised in the reservation; he was also the one of very few Americans who could
speak the Navajo language precisely (Aaseng 17). In February of 1942, Johnston was able to present
the language to the commanders of the Marine Corps and the idea impressed them, so that they
allowed Johnston to start a Navajo Code Talker Test Program. Later in April, Johnston and the Marine
Corps commanders went to the reservation and recruited thirty men (Aaseng 23). The men that were
recruited marked the start of the pilot program. Of the first thirty men who joined the program, only
twenty nine completed it and went to help the war effort. The two men that had dropped out were not
qualified for service as code talkers for the Marine Corps (Paul 75). This group of the twenty nine
Navajo men came to be called the original twenty nine. The Navajo men that were recruited often
lacked birth certificates so it was impossible for the Marine Corps to verify ages, but after the war it
was discovered that some recruits were as young as fifteen and some were as old as thirty five (Paul
14). Once the Navajo men were given the task to create the code it was not an easy task. Each military
word had to be given a code name and the code name had to be

3. Government Is An Instrument Of The State Essay
At times confuse is made among state and Government and the two words are used on the other hand.
Government is an instrument of the state through which it does its inspirations. A state, as we have
seen, is a politically dealt with and geographically obliged collection of people that has the benefit to
use constrain. It is a reasonable substance in this manner ought to have an instrument through which to
work. Government is such an instrument. Each one of the nationals of a state are not part of a
government (Shobeiri, S. M. 2007). It s Forms: Governments may take a couple of structures. In
history, there have appeared to be many sorts of government. Aristotle had given a six wrinkle
portrayal of governments three standard and three degraded sorts of government. The three common
sorts of government will be government, control by one individual; advantaged, led by a couple;
nation, oversee by various. In case these ordinary structures are contorted, government gets the
opportunity to be persecution, nobility gets the chance to be religious government and country gets the
chance to be vote based framework. Political Parties: Political social affairs have ended up being vital
associates of government in present day times. They are the instruments whereby hopefuls are doled

The Chinese culture is very different than the culture in the United States of America and business
meetings require preplanning if they are going to be successful. * How should you handle the

Although in the Chinese culture, a nod and slight bow is a general way of greeting, Chinese business
men are comfortable with a handshake. Address the most Senior Chinese person in the room first, and

5. The First Trip I Went On Campus At San Diego State University
The first trip I went on was a community outreach trip to the children s daycare, on campus at San
Diego State University. This being my first trip, I was not sure what to expect. Initially, I did not think
the children would be interested in oral hygiene, however, since we promoted healthy oral hygiene
through games, the children were fascinated in what we had to say and show them. It was shocking
how few of these children knew how to properly floss and teaching them how to was definitely a
challenge. Most of the kids were unable to grip the floss with both of their tiny hands but it was
admirable how much determination they had despite their struggles, and it showed how much they
really wanted to learn how to floss. Even though most of the children were actively participating, there
were some who were very shy and too timid to participate, which made me realize that when I am
dentist I will often be working with children who are very shy and I have to make sure that they are
comfortable around me. Ultimately, this trip showed me that I am going to be working with hundreds
of patients, none of which are the same and it will be my job to do whatever I can to make them
comfortable in my office and care. The second trip I attended, which was a TRACE trip, was another
very rewarding experience. The adults we were presenting to were so eager to learn and participate, it
was enlightening how excited they were. One thing I especially liked about this trip was that Sam

6. Revolutionary Mothers Summary
During the American Revolution, men were often thought to have been the only ones to fight and
participate in the war. While men were the majority that fought in the actual war, women were left to
tend to all of the duties left by men, as well as, their own duties. Women were the backbone of towns,
farms, and other businesses during the war. The book, Revolutionary Mothers by Carol Berkin, shares
the stories of what women went through during the Revolutionary War. Carol Berkin writes about
what all the women, no matter what race or political beliefs, went through during the war, and how
these women handled the war. The book, Revolutionary Mothers, tells of the hardships women of the
revolution had to go through in order for life to go on. The book tells of what Patriot, Loyalist, Native
American, African American, and American women went through while the men fought. It tells you
about what happened when the British invaded the farms and houses of the Americans, and what
happened to women. The author describes the stories of women whose husbands fought on the
Patriots side, and the husbands who fought for the Loyalists side. Also, it shows you how the roles of
the women in society changed throughout from an obedient housewife to protector of the family.
While this book can be read by anyone wanting to learn about history, feminists would be the people
most interested in reading, Revolutionary Mothers. Feminists would be deeply interested in this book

7. What Led To Progressivism Dbq
What led to progressivism was the Industrial Revolution. This brought prosperity to America but at a
great cost. While the big businesses were booming and making America a stronger country the middle
and lower class was suffering. This was called the Gilded Age because when an outside country would
look at America it would assume they are fine but on the inside it isn t. This all changed however
when the people had enough of bad working conditions, unfair wages, dangerous machines, and child
labor. Through the persistence of the people and the help of two very progressive presidents named
Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson they changed the country for the better. Progressivism was
effective on a national level for some aspects but not all. The people also wanted to have a more safe
and fair working environment. Before progressivism there was no laws on food or product production
making it very unsafe for the consumer to know what he is buying. Journalists called muckrakers
would call attention to this by writing about the horrible conditions in factories. One of these
muckrakers named Upton Sinclair wrote a book called The Jungle which talked about the unsanitary
atmosphere the meat was produced in. This book brought so much attention that the Meat Inspection
Act was passed in 1906 by president Roosevelt. This act made strict cleanliness requirements for
meatpackers to ensure the general people a healthy meal.(Document B). Another act that was passed at

9. Causes Of The Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was an important national movement with connections to international
developments in art and culture in the African American culture (Wintz). The movement also known
as the Jazz Age , started on different dates depending on the viewer s interpretation of the Harlem
Renaissance. For instance, if your interpretation of the Harlem Renaissance is literature, then it began
in the year 1924. However, most people associate the year 1920 with the creation of the Harlem
Renaissance. The Great Migration was one major start to the Harlem Renaissance due to the
movement of African Americans from the South to Harlem. The Great Migration was caused by racial
discrimination against African Americans as well as slavery. There were racial groups such as the
KKK (Ku Klux Klan) that used violence against African Americans to prove a point. Not only were
the KKK the cause of the Great Migration but as well as the wanting of improvement in lifestyle.
Harlem provided the African Americans the opportunity to receive a better paying job to support their
families as well as superior education. As we all know, African Americans did not have an easy life in
the South as a result of slavery and segregation. As a result, many African Americans saw Harlem in
New York as an opportunity to improve their family s lifestyles along with their own. This led to the
development of African American culture, such as jazz music, art and literature. For instance, Chick
Webb reflects the ideas, values and contributions of the Harlem Renaissance through his
accomplishments and musical influence. William Henry Webb was a famous swing era jazz drummer
and bandleader, however; he did face many challenges to accomplish his goal. William Henry Webb
was born in Baltimore, Maryland with spinal tuberculosis. Spinal tuberculosis affects the spinal
vertebrates, which causes the individual to have a lump in their back and prevent them from growing
like a normal human being. As a result, William Henry Webb was given the nickname Chick Webb. In
addition, his date of birth is unclear due to the lack of documentation during his birth. However, some
believe he was born in the year 1902 while others believe it was 1909. Due to the condition he

10. Essay on Andrew Jackson and the Bank War
The validity of President Andrew Jackson s response to the Bank War issue has been contradicted by
many, but his reasoning was supported by fact and inevitably beneficial to the country. Jackson s
primary involvement with the Second Bank of the United States arose during the suggested
governmental re chartering of the institution. It was during this period that the necessity and value of
the Bank s services were questioned. The United States government in 1816 chartered the Second
Bank of the United States. It had a 20 year charter, which was to expire in 1836. Despite this, the Bank
was privately owned and during the age of Jackson, the president was Nicholas Biddle. The Bank was

Secondly, he also found it unconstitutional that the government was chartering such an institution,
thus creating a bank, this right is also not given to the government in the constitution. The Jacksonians
were strict constructionists, believing in a strict interpretation of the constitution, which is why he and
his ideological followers had such anguish towards the bank on constitutional terms. In addition, the
government s acceptance of bank notes for taxes also did not coincide with the Jackson s anti paper
money views.
Evidence of Jackson s anti Bank views can be found in his veto message, which vetoed the re charter
of the Second Bank.
It (the Second Bank) enjoys an exclusive privilege of banking under the authority of the General
Government, a monopoly of its favor and support, and, as a necessary consequence, almost a
monopoly of the foreign and domestic exchange (Hofstadte 291).
In his veto message, he also makes it a point to discuss how a limited portion of the nation s society is
benefiting from the Bank.
Every monopoly and all exclusive privileges are granted at the expense of the public, which ought to
receive a fair equivalent If our Government must sell monopolies, it would seem to be its duty to
take nothing less than their full value, and if gratuities must be made once in fifteen or twenty years let

11. God s Spirits Of Lust
Human Sacrifices
Satan s spirits of lust emerge in the pagan gods Baal, Molech, and Chemosh that are all mentioned in
the Bible; specifically, their practices often included distorted sexual acts, human sacrifices,
cannibalism, and the eating of blood that were distinctively traits of devil worship. Baal worship
became abundant throughout much of the ancient Middle East; concurrently, in early societies Baal
has a long history of perverted sex that is akin to Pan Worship within his cult rituals. Mount Hermon
turned out to be one of the major centers of Baal/Pan worship that involved the brutality of human
sacrifices. Baal obtained other god s identity, such as the horned Molech; well known for child
sacrifices. The various names and epithets of Baal occurring in the Old Testament and elsewhere were
derived from his various aspects and the localities of his worship. For the majority of people, the
cruelty of tormenting and murdering children becomes too devastating, believing that it just could not
have happened. On the contrary, the Bible s staunch position states numerous times concerning these
killings, and references how the Israelites served the idols of the heathen.
In 1870, Sir Charles Warren happened to be exploring in the Lebanon region on the summit of Mount
Hermon and found the ruins of a temple believed to belong to Baal. Similarly, this could be relevant to
the Bible s stating they ...destroy all their molten

12. Effects Of Nonverbal Behavior On Power Perceptions Of Male...
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to build on Auginis and Henle (2001) and Auginis, Simonsen and
Pierce (1998) by examining the effects of nonverbal behavior on power perceptions of male and
female employees in managerial positons. This study will use a 2 (Gender: male vs. female) x 3
(Nonverbal behavior: eye contact vs. facial expression vs. body posture) x 2 (Repeated measures: pre
test vs. post test) design. Employees in the retail industry will fill out a questionnaire prior to the study
pertaining to their general perceptions of male and female employees in managerial positons. The
questionnaire will be followed by two video tape recordings, showing a male and female manager
engaging in all three types of nonverbal behaviors. After watching each video, the participants will be
asked to evaluate their perceptions of the manager s power bases (reward, coercive, legitimate,
referent, and credibility) by filling out a questionnaire. It is predicted that male employees will be
perceived as having more power than female employees for all power bases. Effects of Nonverbal
Behavior on Power Perceptions:

At first glance, it appears the All Writs Act was designed specifically for cases like Apple v. FBI, as it
enables the government to request Apple to assist them. However, other cases that have applied the
Act have created new ideas and precedent regarding the authority of the government in requesting
assistance from a device manufacturer.
Application of the Law The most notable precedent regarding the All Writs Act comes from the 1977
Supreme Court ruling in United States v. New York Telephone Company (NYTC). After the FBI
attained probable cause to believe two telephones were furthering an illegal gambling enterprise, a
District Court granted them access to install pen registers. These pen registers, which record the
numbers dialed on outgoing calls, were intended to provide the FBI all necessary information,
facilities, and technical assistance needed. The FBI asserted it needed the telephone company s
assistance, and although the telephone company was willing to provide some assistance, it refused to
furnish facilities and provide technical assistance. After the case made it through an array of appeals,

14. The Romantic Period Of Music During The Romantic Era
The romantic period of music began in the 1820s and with it came a change of stylistic features.
Beethoven largely impacted the new way that the music of the Romantic era was viewed. He made
people perceive music as a true form of art made to be taken seriously, rather than just a fun time
passer. Another reason for the change of music during that time was due to nationalism and exoticism.
Nationalism promoted music, such as folk songs and dances, which was created for the purpose of
supporting the nation. Exoticism had the opposite effect as nationalism. It caused audiences to listen to
folk music from other nations and it allowed people to have a better understanding of unique qualities
and cultures of surrounding nations. These factors led to the music during the Romantic period
becoming more personal and emotion than it was in the previous classical era, although it still
contained a melody, harmony, tone color, and a form. Much of the music from the Romantic era can
be recognized by its melody. The melodies became wider, more irregular, and dramatic during this
time. The harmony of Romantic music was further advanced as well. The composers learned how to
use harmony to build the melody and intensify its emotionality, while at the same time experimenting
freely with new chords. The tone color of music during this time was expanded allowing the quality of
the sound of the music to improve. One of the most important changes that were made to the features
of music during

Usually when the economy is doing well the incumbent party will win the election, due to low
unemployment and higher wage increases. The electorate cares about not spending tax dollars on

compatibility with Article 23(2) of the Brussels I Regulation. Exclusively, the question of whether the

III. Procedural History
As to the matter of jurisdiction, El Majdoub alleged that the Landgricht Krefeld is the competent court
to proceed with the case because, Cotw as the defendant in the main proceedings is the party to the
sale contract which has been concluded between them also it is based in Germany (not in Belgium).
On the contrary, Cotw argued that the courts in Germany are not competent authority to proceed with
the case based on two reasons. Firstly, on the website there is an agreement within Article 7 of the
general terms and conditions of online sales contracts that grants the jurisdiction to a court in Leuven,
Belgium. Furthermore, the defendant in the main proceedings contended that the real party to the
contract is the mother company which is established in Belgium while the plaintiff in the main
proceedings is well aware of that because the invoice which was sent to him contained the contract
details of the mother company and the money was paid to a Belgian bank account.
In spite of this, El Majdoub argued that the choice of court agreement acknowledged in Article 7 is not
in writing, so it does not comply with Article 23(1) (a) of the Brussels I Regulation. In addition, the
general terms and conditions of the sale contract were incorporated in a webpage which opens through

Secret Identity or Stolen Identity
How many, in this group has a computer, phone, and/or a tablet? How many have a mobile internet

it is likely you have an email address, you have given your home address on a website, entered credit

Unfortunately, some of those vulnerabilities are directly related to people with only one goal, to cause

many people assume that it does cost a lot of money for research and development. Where in reality,
they are only spending about 15% of their profit margins on research and development alone. A huge
percentage of these drugs are actually tested in other countries where people are more willing to do

According to the first CI, it is morally wrong to sell these medical drugs at such a high cost, especially
when it does not cost relatively as much to create the drug. Looking at the act universally, we can
determine that if everyone had a product that they placed on the market and charged a tremendously
greater amount than the cost to produce the product/service, then our economy would most likely
collapse. There is no real necessary need to make such a huge profit margin. Also, considering Kant s
belief that every change has a reason and we may understand there is no reason for these companies to
charge such a high price. Especially because most of today s society falls under the middle to lower
class and only a small group of wealthy individuals will be likely to survive. Therefore, the maxim
cannot be willed as universally acceptable and will be considered as an immoral act. Another question
we come across in this case is Should these pharmaceutical companies have a moral obligation to
make the drugs available to the people who they performed clinical trials on? . Again we clearly
should see that the pharmaceutical companies should allow the access of these drugs to the people that
are being used to test their products. There is a huge risk for these people who are taking a new drug,
not knowing exactly what the outcome can be and are merely treated as guinea pigs for the

21. Comparing Rhetoric In We Shall Overcome And Apple s Mac
The difference between Martin Luther King s speech We Shall Overcome and Apple s Macintosh
Computer commercial have vastly different types of rhetoric. However, these two pieces do have one
thing in common: getting a point across to an audience. King does an excellent job of showing
emotion in his voice, and sets a prideful mood for the rest of his speech. By doing this he also sparks
the audience s sense of pathos or emotion. In contrast, in the Macintosh commercial the speaker
mainly appeals to ethos or ethics. In the commercial an allusion of 1984 is present. The speaker uses
this irony when connecting 1984, which is a novel about the dangers of technology, and Macintosh
computer together. This creates a spooky and sci fi tone. The audience

22. My Philosophy Of Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is to engage in a mutual exchange of knowledge with the students. I believe
that through helping students to develop skills of critical reflection and critical thinking they will
become able to carry out innovative research and also succeed in work beyond academia. Through
interactive teaching methods such as group work, role play, and joint presentations I seek not only to
encourage students to engage with me as an instructor, but also to exchange and discuss ideas with
their fellow students. I am a firm believer in the value of interdisciplinary teaching and research.
Therefore, I seek to make my students familiar with concepts and research that reaches beyond
political science and is related to law, sociology, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I also offered weekly office hours to provide the students with targeted feedback and help them with
their individual questions. Furthermore, I offered to get in touch with me via e mail at any time and
regarding all questions related to the class.
A second course I taught as an undergraduate teaching assistant was the Introduction to Social
Structure Analysis of Modern Societies at the Institute for Sociology at Georg August University
Göttingen. In this weekly course, I made undergraduate and graduate students familiar with basic
concepts of empirical sociology and introduced them to different fields of sociological studies such as
labor market analysis, analysing educational systems, and studying migration. In addition, I made
myself available outside of the classroom via regularly scheduled office hours as well as providing my
students with my email address so that they could contact me at any time. Doing so allowed me to
clarify any issues they might have had with course material and to help with their individual research.
As a PhD student, I designed a course together with a colleague for undergraduate and graduate
students. The course was designed for the Spring Seminar entitled Failed States Problems and
Perspectives in collaboration with the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes at Technische Universität
Dresden, Germany. Both undergraduate and graduate students participated in this course. The course

23. Stainless Steel Tips
Stainless steel is a type of metal made by combining a small amount of chromium with a larger
amount of iron. It has a smooth, shiny surface that looks polished and professional. And it also
conducts heat very well. So many restaurants use tableware made from it. The stainless steel tableware
sold by Seating Expert is sturdy and strong. It easily resists most types of damage that other more
fragile metals can t withstand. However, it still has to be cared for properly to keep it looking great. So
to help, here is a list of a few tips for cleaning and polishing it.

Rub it over the rust until it disappears. Then, rinse the vinegar off right away. Don t use baking soda or
any other product because it could damage the finish of the dishes.
Rinse it Off
Use more hot water to rinse the stainless steel tableware. If you are washing a large stack of tableware,
don t reuse the rinse water. Run it straight from the tap instead. Otherwise, the dishes will keep getting
covered in soapy residue.
Drying and Polishing
Don t let the stainless steel tableware sit with water on it in a draining rack. It should always be dried
off immediately to prevent it from rusting. Use a clean, soft cloth for this. After all the tableware is
dried, it has to be polished. Since most polishes are toxic, it helps to use a food product like olive oil
for this. Simply dip another soft cloth in a bit of the oil, and rub it all over the metal. Only use enough
to make it sparkle. There shouldn t be a heavy coat of oil left behind on the dishes. A food grade polish
made especially for stainless steel tableware is also

24. King John And The Barons
During and after the time of the Norman kings, English monarchs would a call for a Great Council. It
is the Great Council that will evolve into Parliament. It was an assembly of church leaders, such as
archbishops, bishops, abbots. As well as powerful members of the landowning nobility like barons and
earls to address the important affairs of the realm.became hopeless for it to rule effectively. The
conflict between King John and the barons is a major instance of what happens when the system of
consultation and consent was ignored. The results of which would start the lowering the authority of
the king and the rise of Parliament. The idea of popular consent to royal government emerged in the
thirteenth century during the reign of King John from 1199 to 1216. He was the youngest of the five
sons of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Being the youngest boy, he was not
expected to inherit a large amount of land. After his older brothers failed rebellion between 1173 and
1174, John became the favored child of his father. He was given the title Lord of Ireland in 1177 and
received lands in both England and English lands on the European continent. When most of his elder
brothers died young, John s brother Richard, became king 1189 after the death of their father. John
was a potential heir to the throne. While his brother was off fighting in the Holy Land with the Third
Crusade, John attempted a rebellion against Richard s administrators which failed. When

25. Natural and Sexual Selection of Vestigial and Wild Type...
Natural and Sexual Selection of Vestigial and Wild Type Drosophila melanogaster
Abstract
In this experiment, vestigial flies as well as wild type flies were used to create some diversity as well
as test one of our hypotheses. Our hypotheses are as follows; 1) The wild type flies will have a greater
relative fitness compared to the vestigial flies based on only sexual selection. The wild type has a
relative fitness of 1 since it has fully functional wings. Vestigial Winged flies are not as sexually
appealing since their wings are not functional and the wing movement is a vital part of their mating
ritual. 2) The vestigial fly will have a greater relative fitness when considering both sexual and natural
selection. With the presence of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the presence of natural selection (fly paper hanging from top of cage) posing a larger threat to
the wild flies b/c they can fly better, this will allow vestigial flies to prosper better.
Materials and Methods
To set up this experiment, two twenty five gallon aquariums, 3 petri dishes, 200 flies, rotten bananas,
and yeast were used. The bananas chosen to be an accelerant for the growth of the yeast and were
frozen so they would be easier to cut. The yeast was used because the drosophila melanogaster prefer
this as a food source. The vestigial and wild type flies were sexed (to determine their sex), sorted, and
counted. An initial population size of 100 total flies was decided so that it would be easier to
determine the phenotypic percentage of the total population. Fly paper was placed in one of the sets of
cages to impose a method of natural selection as well as the sexual selection which is being solely
tested by the other set of cages.
It was decided that there would be 80 vestigial flies and 20 wild type flies to total to an initial
population of 100 drosophila. Next, the flies were anesthetized flies using Fly Nap. The flies were
counted out to reach desired ratio, sexing the flies making sure there are equal amounts of males and
females to be sure there is ample individuals to allow successful mating. The fly s food was prepared
by taking a frozen rotten banana, cutting it in half, mashing up the banana meat, and mixing yeast into
it. The

26. Gender And Class Expectations In Regency Society
Communication is effected by gender, status, and propriety in Prid and Prejudice because of society
and social conduct. Gender and class expectations in the Regency of the Victorian period were based
on a fixed social structure. In the novel, Gender controlled and restricted the lives of most people
abiding by them, mainly the women of the time period, who were often disempowered. Men were
expected to be financially viable through family wealth. Women were to remain passive throughout
their lives, marry early, and to support their husbands. Elizabeth, the second daughter in the Bennet

27. Essay On Sylvia Plath
Dying is an art, like everything else. I do it exceptionally well. I do it so it feels like hell. I do it so it
feels real. I guess you could say I ve a call (2603). Sylvia Plath was born October 27, 1932, in Boston
Massachusetts. She carried herself with a non apologetic attitude and an obsession with death, so
much so that she tried to take her own life on more than one occasion. Her first attempt happened
during the summer of her junior year in college. After taking several sleeping pills, she crawled under
her mother s house and was not found until three days later. After some time in a psychiatric hospital,
she recovered fully and attained a Fulbright scholarship to Newnham College, Cambridge ( Sylvia
Plath, Famousauthors.org).
Her poetry was known as a confessional type, typically based on her innermost feelings and thoughts,
with a twist for the dramatic and sensationalism ( Sylvia Plath, Biography.com). She also wrote one
novel, The Bell Jar, a dark literary work said to parallel much of her own life. In a forward to The Bell
Jar, written by Frances McCullough, McCullough states Although her illness was never diagnosed,
several researchers in the field have noted Plath s unerring description of schizophrenic perception...
(xvi). Perhaps this condition had something to do with Plath s early demise, for it was not long after
publication of The Bell Jar, that Plath made the decision to take her own life.

butterflies about everything and ran down with my stuff. It was a struggle, but never stop an ambitious
girl who is about to fly to San Diego. I opened my front door and motioned for one of them to get out
of the car and come help with my bags. I only had one suitcase but it was heavy. I grabbed my carry
on and jogged to the car as Johnson grabbed my suitcase. I made sure that my phone and laptop were

had brought them. What else am I supposed to do on the plane?
San Diego is going to be sweet! We re meeting the guys up at the beach after we get there, Johnson

1. Describe clearly all of the accounting changes Harnischfeger made in 1984.
In 1984, there was a switch from accelerated to straight line depreciation retroactively. Because of
this, the depreciation expense decreased.
The estimated depreciation lives on certain U.S. plants, machinery and equipment changed. The
economic life of these assets was increased, so the depreciation expense was lowered.
There was an improvement in the minimum pension benefit. This change produced a lower pension
expense.

How much did the pre tax income increase as a result of the changed ratio in 1984?
The ratio of the allowance to gross receivables in 1983 is: $6.4 million/$70.1 million*100=9.1%. The
ratio of the allowance to gross receivables in 1984 is: $5.9 million/$93.5 million*100=6.3%
The allowance would have been $8.5 million if they would have had consistency on the ratio from
1983 in 1984. As a result, the pre tax income increase is $2.6 million due to the changed ratio in 1984.
In Millions of US$ 1984 1983
AR Net 87.6 63.7
Allowance for Doubtful accounts 5.9 6.4
AR Gross 93.5 70.1
Allowance for Doubtful accounts ratio 6.3% 9.1%
6. Note 9 indicates that Harnischfeger decreased its R amp;D expense considerably in 1984 relative to
the previous two years. Do you think this change was motivated by business considerations or
accounting considerations? How did this change affect the company s reported profits in 1984?
In 1984, Harnischfeger s reported profits during each of the four quarters, ending the year with a pre
tax operating profit of $5.7 million and a net income after tax and extraordinary credits of $15 million.
So I think that this action was motivated by business considerations, since the accounting practices
were not the best. These actions made profits look positive.

world. Investment banks and Wall Street crashed. It left a good portion of US citizens in debt,
unemployed, homeless, etc. As a result, Occupy Wall Street became a movement to demonstrate that
the people have had enough and started protesting and voicing their opinions. In terms of
globalization, the development of Occupy movements have altered the notion of social movements to

into the hands of the people. The term movements has become a catchall definition about the

The American economy was plummeting and taking the world with it. After a few years, the citizens
realize what caused the crisis and how it happened which created the OWS movement and the
population frustration with the capitalist system. In addition, one must note that those who caused the
financial crisis avoided punishment. They were the ones who lead the economy into failure and, now,
promising that they are the only ones who can fix it. In Inside Job, it demonstrated the consequences
of the crisis and financial innovation, through the educational system. It means that those who
consulted with financial firms and companies were professors or on the board of directors of ivy
league schools, who teach their economic ideologies onto the future generation.7 Ergo, this is creating
a vicious economic cycle that needs to change. Occupy Wall Street: Origin, Purpose, Values and Goals
As a result of the 2008 US financial crisis, the OWS was formed within the period of the US recovery
process to fight the oppression of the current economic powers. From various sources, OWS seemed
to have gained inspiration from Arab Spring. The Arab Spring is a wave of protests for political
change. The Americans realized that they desired a change of economic system because the capitalist
system was creating social inequality.8 Still, the movement of OWS is an occupy movement that
needs to be defined and understand the shift
