Energy can exist in different forms such as light, thermal, chemical, electrical, magnetic, sound, nuclear, and mechanical. Mechanical energy includes potential and kinetic energy. Potential energy is stored energy that has the potential to cause motion, defined as weight multiplied by height. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, defined as half mass multiplied by velocity squared. The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another, so the total amount of energy in a system remains constant.
