Kinetic energy is the energy of motion and is calculated using the equation K=1/2mv^2. The greater the mass or speed, the more kinetic energy an object has. Kinetic energy has SI units of joules. Gravitational potential energy is the energy an object has due to its height and is calculated as U=mgh. Greater mass, gravitational field strength, or height results in more potential energy. Potential energy also has units of joules. The principle of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed in form, so the total energy before any transformation must equal the total energy after.
