FACTORS AFFECTING
POTENTIAL AND KINETIC
ENERGY
By: Shaira Gee Freesha M. Tajan
Grade 8 Red Lauan
Module 3: Factors Affecting Potential and
Kinetic Energy
• The word energy has varied meanings.
• It may refer to food, sources of fuel like gasoline, electricity and many others.
• Knowing the importance of energy, it is also necessary that we need to
understand its basic concepts.
ENERGY
Ø Literally translated to “active” (from the Greek word energos).
Ø Is defined as the ability ohe capacity to do work.
Ø There are different kinds of energy, other examples are kinetic
energy and potential energy.
POTENTIAL ENERGY
v Also known as Gravitational potential energy.²Is the energy at rest or “stored energy” since
it has the potential to do work once released.
vThe energy of an object due to its position relative to some other objects.
vPotential energy is expressed as PE=mgh
vm- the mass in kilograms (kg)
vg- acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s²)
vh- the height in meters (m)
KINETIC ENERGY
qIs possessed by any object in motion like the planet Earth revolving around the Sun.
qIs directly proportiona to the mass of the object and to the square of its velocity.
qIt is mathematically expressed as:
qKE= ½ mv²
qm- the object's mass (kilograms, kg)
qv- the velocity (meters per second, m/s)
qKE- the kinetic energy (kilograms-meters per second squared, kg-m²/s²)
TYPES OF VARIATION
• THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF VARIATION, DIRECT VARIATION
AND INVERSE OR INDIRECT VARIATION.
DIRECT VARIATION
• If an increase in one variable (let us say x) causesan
increase in another variable (let us say y). similarly,
a decrease in x causesa decrease in y. In statement,
we say that “x varies directly as y” or “x is directly
proportional to y”.
INVERSE OR INDIRECT VARIATION
•For two quantities and x and y, if an increase
in x causes a decrease in y or vise versa. We
can say that “y varies inversely as x” or “y is
inversely proportional to x”.
THE LAW OF CONSERVATION OF
ENERGY
üStates that in an isolated system, total amount of
energy is conserved.
üTells us that energy cannot be created nor
destroyed, but it does change from one form to
another.
MASS AND VELOCITY
o Are the factors affecting the kinetic energy of a
body.
oThe kinetic energy of an object depends on the
components.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
WE FINISHED THE ACTIVITY!!!
