• Other day you feel gloomy, sad and lethargic.
• What dominate our behavior certain times.
• It is definitely our feelings and thoughts that drive our
behavior.
• The above lines focus our attention on our ‘Emotions’

Emotion : What it is
• The word emotion is derived from the Latin word ‘emovere’ it means
• Emotion can be excited state of our mind and body.

Definitions : It is better to understand a term with its
various definitions
• Woodsworth (1945)
Emotion is a ‘moved’ or 'stirred-up’ state of an organism. It is a stirred-up state of
feeling, this is the way it appears to the individual himself. It is a disturbed muscular
& glandular activity, that is the way it appears to external observer.

• McDougall (1949)
Emotion is an affective experience that one undergoes during an instinctive
excitement.
Emotions : what they are
• Emotions are good, bad
• They drive our behavior
• They affect our state of mind
• They guide our physiological activities
Emotions are feelings or affective experiences which are
characterized by some physiological changes that generally lead
them to perform some or the other types of behavioral acts.

Nature & characteristics of Emotions
• We can conclude following about the nature & characteristics
of emotions.
• Nature of a person or thing is their basic characteristics- a
quality that is typical of a particular person or thing

1. Associated with some instincts
• Emotional experience are associated with some instincts or
biological drives.
• Emotional experience is associated with one or other innate
instincts.
E.g.: curiosity, escape, food-seeking, curiosity give rise to
wonder, escape is accompanied by fear, food-seeking is
related to appetite

2. Product of perception
• Emotions are product of perceptions.
• Every individual has his/her perceptions of objects or situations.
• The change in body due to perception affects emotional experience
E.g.: Darkness at night causes one to fear, it is our perception of
darkness that rises our fear

3. Core of emotion is feelings
• Every emotional experience involves feelings
• Our feelings towards certain situation arises our emotions.
• E.g. : feeling of distress due to examination or interview,
feeling of enthusiasm due to new opportunity or new role,
feeling for creativity due to external environment

4. Brings physiological changes
• Emotional experience involve physical & physiological
changes in human behavior
• These changes are observable.
• E.g.: circulation of blood, beating of the heart,

• - there is negative correlation between the upsurge of emotion & intelligence
