Dr. Pepper Case Analysis
Dr. Pepper Company
I. Case Summary
From being a practically unknown soft drink company to now being one of the highest performing of
the 1000 largest manufacturing firms, Dr. Pepper has evolved to become an international beverage
organization. Dr. Pepper began its roots back in 1880, in Waco, Texas, when a young soda jerk
invented a soft drink which he named after his father in law (Dr. Pepper). Robert Lazenby began to
market the drink on commercial basis in 1885, and it was not until 1922 that an extensive sales and
distribution program was initiated. The current president of the organization is Mr. Woodrow Wilson
Clements together with Joe K. Hughes who is the executive VP of the firm. The firm is facing a
pressure of product ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This will ensure consumers that they are getting a greater quality at cheaper price and boost consumer
morale.
3. An opportunity exists for the firm to venture into new product lines like energy drinks and other
culinary applications.
C. Internal Weakness
1. The biggest weakness of Dr. Pepper is that it is not diversified. The firm is finding hard to
differentiate its products from that of the competitors. The potential of firm is not being tested and
evaluated properly on which even Mr. W.W Clements says, It would be criminal to branch off into
something else .
2. Another weakness in the firm comes from the ages of the executive officers. Most of the
professionals in the firm are growing old and close to their retirement age. Since they have a lot of
experience and may work beyond their retirement age, but it would be wise for the firm to take young
professionals under their guidance.
3. The firm is producing and wasting its effort and resources in Salute and Waco, fountain syrups,
which only accounts for one percent of dollar sales.
4. Dr. Pepper is one brand domestic company. Lack of product diversification and differentiation, and
also because of the disadvantage against multination organizations like Coca Cola and Pepsi CO., Dr.
Pepper is not the leading seller in any major United States market.

Learning Difficulties refers to a condition where people require additional support with learning. The
majority of children with a learning difficulty do not have an identified diagnosis but some will have,
which includes those with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and those with Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).Many of those who have difficulties learning do not have associated
learning disabilities as defined above. Approximately 10% of the general population are thought to
have learning difficulties.

Denmark (1994) highlighted that deaf people within the general population were more likely to be
referred with disturbance of behaviour than other types of mental health issues.
Hearing loss is an invisible disability that affects people of any age group, from neonates to older
adults.
People with learning disabilities will already have communication limitations, compromising their
education, social functioning and safety. This may be compounded if there is a concurrent hearing
loss.
Reported prevalence of hearing impairment varies from 12.3% to 47% . Some causes of audiological
impairment may be easily corrected, such as impacted ear wax, which occurs commonly in this
population. However, a person with limited or no verbal communication skills may have difficulty in
conveying deterioration in hearing. In addition, difficulties may be attributed incorrectly to an
underlying behavioural problem. It is known that hearing impairment is frequently unrecognised and
under reported by paid carers.Hearing impairment increases with age, severity of hearing disability
and the presence of Down s syndrome.
Early detection and intervention should be beneficial. It is possible to assess hearing in persons with
profound learning disabilities who may have additional complexities, for example those with
challenging behaviours and/or Autistic

Compare and Contrast the Influence and Consequence of...
Compare and contrast the influence and consequence of European Imperialism on Africa and China
during the 19th century.
Imperialism is when one country dominates the cultural, economic, and political life of a nation
weaker than itself. In the 19th century, Europe was the nation that was dominating both China and
Africa. There were quite a few similarities in the way that European imperialism was changing these
nations. One important similarity was that both the nations had resisted against British imperialism at
one point. However, despite the fact that both these events occurred at the same time, by the same
nations, there were quite a few differences as well. One of the main differences due to the impact of
Imperialism in China ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason there was resistance faced from both these nations was simply because both were
independent nations. One of the major differences in between China and Africa during the period of
their Imperialism was that the Chinese people had a revolution while the Africans did not. In China
Sun Yat Sen wanted to end the dynasty system in China and he did this by starting a revolution. Soon,
the government had learned about his plans and he went to the west to gather support to overthrow the
Manchu Dynasty. He wanted to do this because he believed that China should be a republic otherwise
they would fall behind all the other nations. Sun Yat Sen had created the three principles and
eventually these three principles became very well known and soon another uprising which was
successful ended the Manchu dynasty. China finally became a Republic. Another major difference
between the Imperialism in Africa and China was that China was harder to conquer than Africa
because for one, China had a centralized government. This meant that the Chinese would most
probably have one large military, which it did. Another reason it was harder to conquer was that it was
much farther than Africa was for the British. This led to more difficulties in travelling to get to China.
Also, in China there was one unified language whereas in Africa there were multiple languages. One
more difficulty was that the people were also more unified

The Poisonwood Bible, By Barbara Kingsolver, And Jane Eyre
Family Tides Family is extremely valuable and the way you re raised completely molds the your
behaviour and beliefs in the future. In the novels The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver, and
Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, the authors express that when children are brought up by a selfish
guardian it will negatively affect them. The Poisonwood Bible is about a christian family of six who
go down to the Belgian Congo on a mission trip to save the Congolese. But instead of saving them,
[they] aimed for no more than to have dominion over every creature that moved upon the earth
(Kingsolver 10). On the other hand the book Jane Eyre, is about a young orphaned heroine named

lets Nathan speak for her. Since she is the conqueror s wife she she can t help but feel as nothing more

best parent to raise kids in the unfamiliar Belgian Congo. Within each story there were children who

despite their parentage were Jane and Adah. these two being the only exceptions because of their
choice to distance themselves Adah and Jane would also distance themselves by seeking seclusion
within books, making it a transient stimulus, (Bronte 17) of some sort, for both of them allowing them
to escape their guardians. As both Jane, and Adah, grew up they both seeked education unlike the rest
of their family. Jane physically got away from her relatives by pursuing an education. Although she
scarcely knew what school was, (Bronte 70) she still really wanted to get schooling, and finally escape
the Reeds. While Jane physically left her family Adah would mentally distance herself from her

Governing of equations includes the equations related to first law of thermodynamics for steady flow

Polyethylene Glycol Research Paper
The polymer that I choose is polyethylene glycol (PEG). Polyethylene glycol is produced because of
the interaction with ethylene oxide with water, ethylene glycol or ethylene glycol oligomers. Some
cons of using polyethylene glycol are hypersensitivity, unexpected change in pharmacokinetic
behavior, and toxic side products. PEG is also a laxative that can also be used to prepare the bowels
before surgery. PEG is also used to slow the clearing of protein from the blood. This makes medicine
last longer in the body. Polyethylene glycol has also been used to help the healing of the spine inn
dogs and PEG can also help with nerve damage. PEG is most commonly used with the skin because it
has maintains it shape well, it is also pliable so doctors can put it in place before setting it with a green
LED light.

Does Prayer Before An Athletic Competition Affect The...
Question: Does prayer before an athletic competition affect the overall performance of the athlete?
Introduction
In today s society prayer has been a pivotal part of many athletes lives. The rituals before a
competition can often make or break a quality performance for that athlete. While interning with
Fordham University Athletics, I had the opportunity to interact with an array of athletes. Watching
these different athletes participate in their pre game rituals has sparked my interest in this research
topic. Does prayer before an athletic competition affect the overall performance of the athlete? In this
study, I attempt to investigate the relationship between religion and prayer and an athletic competitor.
Does prayer result in an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In researching this topic, one very significant academic work, The Use of Prayer in Sport:
Implications for Sport Psychology Consulting by Nick J. Watson and Daniel R. Czech (2005) explores
the new found importance of religion and spirituality in sports, and how the public interprets and
observes an athletes religious rituals. As both Watson and Czech (2005) are sport psychologists, their
research examines the importance of religion, its effect on an athlete s psychological state, as well as
the affect it has on athlete s overall performance in competition.
Watson and Czech (2005) first define religion and spirituality so as the reader can fully understand
what the author s writing and research findings mean. The terms religion, spirituality, and prayer, can
have different meanings amongst different cultures, so it is important the reader has concrete
definitions in mind prior to reading the article. The authors define religion as . . . a system of beliefs in
divine or superhuman power, and practices of worship or other rituals directed toward such a power
(p.2). This for example is Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism. The definition of spirituality is much
broader and can be defined from a religious or humanist perspective, where personal meaning is
derived from whatever people believe to be ultimate, and valued in and of itself (p.2). The focus of
their research article is prayer in sport

The Short Stories Of An Hour And A Pair Of Silk Stockings
The Short Stories of Kate Chopin The short stories, The Story of an Hour and A Pair of Silk Stockings
were both written in the 1800 s. The stories are both written by Kate Chopin, a female author. The
period in which these stories were written gave impact on other female writers to produce stories too.
The literary devices Chopin uses in both these stories show how educated female writers were at the
time. The way the author, Kate Chopin, uses many literary devices in her works, The Story of an Hour
and A Pair of Silk Stockings , such as location, imagery and characterization. FIrst, Chopin uses
location in both of her stories. In The Story of an Hour the location of the short story is in Mrs.
Mallards home. After learning of her husbands death, She went away to her room alone (Story 463).
Mrs. Mallard was locked away in her room alone with an open window and a roomy arm chair that
she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that hauned her body and seem to reach into her soul
(Story 463). According to Hicks, in the overview of The Story of an Hour , the emotion in Mrs.
Mallards bedroom is indisputable, the suspension of intelligent thought removes from the reader the
need to share in the window s grief and instead allows him or her to remain an onlooker, as eager as
Mrs. Mallard to see what was approaching to possess her (2). In A Pair of Silk Stockings Mrs.
Sommers was buying expensive clothes for herself in stores, buying nice food at

Dunkirk Or Dunkirque In France
Dunkirk or Dunkirque, is in France. Infamously known for Dunkirk evacuation, this small town went
from a peaceful settlement into a brave town of soldiers. In 1940, from May 26 to June 4, Allie
soldiers were exposed to what could have been one of the worse massacres in history. In a span of ten
days, sailors, fishermen, or anybody with a boat, saved 350,000 British, French, and Belgium soldiers
from Dunkirk. The evacuation was very successful. For every eight men on the Dunkirk port, seven of
them were rescued. The unfortunate ones became prisoners of war to Germany.
In 1940, during the beginning of World War II, France was becoming progressively weaker. The Allies
were losing the war, so Great Britain wanted to pull their troops out.

Relationship Between Intelligence And Creativity
What is the relationship between intelligence and creativity?
In this essay I will explore the correlation between intelligence (IQ) and creativity (DT), and whether
one is influenced or can be predicted by the existence of the other. The relationship between IQ
(intelligence quotient) and creativity has been an anchor point for psychological research. Numerous
amounts of psychologists have carried out research in order to find evidence to support this idea of a
correlation or evidence to disprove the hypothesis that IQ and creativity could be related.
IQ is defined as a measure of intelligence that shows the ratio of an individual s mental age to their
chronological age, this is then multiplied by 100 (Cattel 1972). Creativity cannot be measured by
undertaking an IQ test, creativity is subjective and the simplest way of defining it is the ability to
create original, useful and surprising new things. However, over the years pioneering research has
inspired psychologists to devise tests to measure creativity. The most famous Divergent Thinking test
is Guildfords Alternative Uses Task established in 1967. This test proposes that the individual
involved should think of alternative uses for a common item such as a brick. This way of measuring
Divergent Thinking is universally used in contemporary testing of creativity.
In order to analyse and examine whether or not creativity and IQ have a relationship and whether its
influential on each other, I looked at the founding

Primal Religions
According to the dictionary the definition of time is indefinite and continuous duration regarded as
that in which events succeed one another. Time in today s modern world is what some people highly
stress about and complain about not having enough of it when there many things needs to be

history shows us that time was not relevant to our ancestors. Studying the primal religions in class was

The Enormous Growth During the Renaissance
The term Renaissance in general refers to Rebirth or Reconstruction . To be exact, the meaning came
from all the changes experienced and inventive ideas that influence during the European history. The
Renaissance occurred between the 14th and 17th century when there was revival in both learning and
culture in Europe. It began in Florence, Italy and traveled throughout other city states in Italy. It
mainly occurred in Italy due to the history of Rome and Roman Empire. The Renaissance was a
cultural movement that swept through Europe because of a diversion in significant understanding.
Italy was so wealthy that people were willing to spend their money to encourage the artists. With that
being said, the Renaissance was a time in which society experienced an enormous growth. This
development was not only financial, but also in the cultural areas. Artists and Bookman were perusing
the teachings and artwork of ancient Greece and Rome. It was a tremendous strike in many fields in
particular to art, literature, education, political science, and history of the future generation.
The Rebirth changes in the style of art and also the perspective of artists. Political changes in the
ruling class of Italy shortly before the period had led to the rulers of the major city states being new
men without much of a political history. They try to regulate themselves with noticeable display,
spectacle, including all forms of art and creativity. The artists keen to use their new

Advantages And Disadvantages Of CO2 Laser
Carbon dioxide laser ablation:
The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser has been in use for decades as a tool in general and dermatological
surgery. The CO2 laser creates an infrared light at a 10600 nm wavelength that produces a thermal
effect on targeted tissue. The energy from the laser rapidly heats intracellular and extracellular water
to 100 ºC, causing vaporization, thus disrupting cell membranes and causing cell death.
The laser is used to vaporize a layer of epithelium, and this skin is cleared from the field with a
moistened cotton tip applicator or gauze. Johnson et al. described the depth of treatment for CO2 laser
therapy, as several histologic layers can be differentiated with consecutive laser passes, such that the
full depth of dysplastic involvement can be removed. Thus, use of the laser is theoretically curative for
AC and does not cause deep dermal damage with ensuing scar formation.
Several studies on the optimal technique to treat AC lesions by CO2 laser recommend a superpulsed
mode rather than continuous wave form, as pulsed laser therapy decreases recovery time and scarring
potential.
Superpulsed CO2 laser concentrates treatment into rapid powerful pulses that allow cooling ... Show

Non State Networks That Emerge During War
Non state networks that emerge during war are largely informed by the country s peacetime dynamics,
adjusting to opportunities and challenges in a less secure environment. Are they inherently predatory,
undermining the state and stripping its assets or can they be foundations from which a strong civil
society can be built upon as, ostensibly, relative stability returns? Different actors in a conflict have
different tools at their disposal and thus divergent mechanisms for harnessing power. Picard (2000)
categorises four organizational networks that emerged during Lebanon s fifteen year civil war:
ideological and welfare based entities; loosely controlled armed groups; autonomous principalities;
and corporatist structures. It goes without saying that these categories are not rigid and can exhibit
overlapping characteristics. Their separation however serves a useful analytical purpose and reveals
the diversity in the means devised, to both maintain local legitimacy and maintain a steady revenue
stream, devised by those who take part in war making.
Loosely Controlled Armed Groups
The Lebanese Shi ite militia, Amal was composed of a variety of local self defence groups controlling
small territories such as villages or individual streets in the southern suburbs of Beirut as well as in

Sustainability Reporting Of The United States
Abstract
Sustainability reporting in the United States is still a work in progress. While more countries around
the world are requiring companies to report the effects of their business activities as part of their
annual report, this practice is still voluntary in the US. Even though sustainability reporting is not
required, companies generally disclose sustainable information on their websites or through social
media. Being social responsible builds a certain type of bond that brings internal and external
stakeholders together.
Many companies in the US have taken action and developed their corporate governance model that
will meet their needs as well as the needs of the people around them, thus creating a better
environment for shareholders and stakeholders. Currently, most companies that issue sustainability
reporting follow the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards guidelines. The GRI standards are
designed to achieve transparency, and it has become the most common set of standards used amongst
organizations for sustainability reporting.
This research paper was written with the purpose of providing some answers as to why sustainability
reporting in the United States should be mandated by regulators. The paper briefly describes the GRI
standards and guidelines, the benefits of sustainability reporting, some relative advantages limitations
in adopting sustainability reporting, as well as provides a few examples of companies that have
successfully adopted

Designing A 3d Design Of 3d Printing
3d printing is the process of three dimensional solid objects from a computer file. The following
information is about 3D printing and the processes that it takes to 3D print. There are many pro and
cons to 3D printing that I will list below. In this paper I will also talk about what equipment it will
take to make a 3D print, But first we will talk about the steps to make a 3D design.
There are eight steps to print a 3D design. The first step is to start with making a virtual design of an
object you want to create. The file that you create the image from is called a (CAD) or Computer
Aided Design file. This software may provide some hints to the structural integrity you can expect in
the finished product. It will also help you with specific data about certain materials to create virtual
simulations of how the project will behave under certain conditions.
The second step is called Conversion to STL. You will have to convert the CAD drawing, to the STL
format. STL is an acronym for standard tessellation language. Which is a file format developed for 3D
Systems in 1987 for use by its stereolithography apparatus (SLA) machines. Most 3D printers use STL
files in addition to some proprietary file types such as, ZPR by Z corporation. Some of the types of
printers include, Sterolithography or (SLA), Digital Light Processing (DLP), Fused deposition
modeling (FDM), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Selective laser melting (SLM), Electronic Beam

Parallels Between Mrs Dalloway and The Hours
The ongoing relationship between the literary movements of modernism and post modernism is
encompassed by the intertextual relationships between Stephen Daldry s The Hours and Virginia
Woolf s Mrs Dalloway . These relationships communicate the inadequacy of previous writings to
convey trauma, cultural crisis and the deep fragmentation within their respective societies. The
immediate context of these social dialogues creates a clear division between each text, however the
intertextual similarities between minor and major characters create an effective parallel to traverse
decades, years, months and days. This is in order to assess the lasting impacts of society on an
individual s desire to escape either physically or metaphorically. ... Show more content on

The coffee was very slow ... until Mr Whitbread had finished ... Hugh was so very slow the agonising
sense of immediacy both draws our attention back to clock time whilst allowing us to delve into
Clarissa s past as she recalls that Hugh is always so absurdly slow. As reality is blurred in
psychological time, external time punctuates the novel There! Out it boomed. First a warning,
musical, then the hour, irrevocable this reminds the reader that this story is in fact occurring in a single
day and every event experienced outside of this timeframe is a figment of a characters memory. Woolf
makes these memories the focus of the novel rather than external time to create a mobile reality where
she fabricates the sense of movement by traversing time through the consciousness of her characters.
These memories therefore are from a specific point of view and therefore exclude some properties of
the remembered moment and parts of said reality may simply be dissolved in the air as the memory
fades with ongoing time.
Daldry approaches Woolf s tunnelling technique with sensitivity and subtlety in order to unify
Virginia, Laura and Clarissa. The repetitive musical score by Philip Glass creates a sense of the
cyclical nature of time and is evocative of the relentlessness of time. This too creates an illusion of
both time and timelessness as the regular rhythm simulates that of a clock as

Importance Of Trailer Brakes In Florida
If you recently purchased your first large boat, you need to make sure that you meet all the legal
requirements in Florida before you haul your boat down to the water. Florida has specific regulations
in place for any trailers that are used to haul larger loads, such as a big sail boat, in order to keep you
and the motorist around you safe on the road.
Trailer Brakes
The first thing you need to do is make sure that each wheel of your trailer is equipped with its own set
of brakes. You are required by law to have each wheel on your trailer have its own set of brakes when
you pull more than 3,000 pounds of weight.
Most larger boats will exceed this weight capacity; your owner s manual that came with your boat
should include weight information. If your boat is close to or ... Show more content on

You need to be able to see these taillights from at least 1,000 feet away. Be sure to test your taillights
before you set off on the road.
Trailer Hitch Safety Backups
If your trailer is hitched to your vehicle, you need to make sure that you have some safety back ups in
place as well to keep your trailer attached. You can use chains or cables as a back up method to secure
your trailer to your vehicle.
Trailer Permit
If you are towing an oversized boat, you will need to obtain a permit. Luckily, the state of Florida has
made it relatively easy to obtain a permit. You just have to go to the Florida Department of
Transportation (FDOT) website and use their Permit Application System (PAS) to apply for a permit.
If you are only going to need to haul your boat a few times a year, you can apply for a trip permit
through the PAS. You can get approved online and print out your own permit. If you are going to be
hauling your boat on a regular basis, you are going to need to apply for an Annual permit. You can still
apply online for an Annual permit; however the permit itself is sent through the mail

The Effects Of Teen Dating Violence
Teen dating violence is multifaceted abuse that occurs between two people who are in a close
relationship, typically a romantic relationship (Hertzog, Harpel, Rochelle, 2016). One or more forms
of abuse may be present in the relationship matter which one or ones, the relationship is still unhealthy
for developing adolescents. Research has shown that its prevalence ranges from at least 9% to at most
57% teens having experienced teen dating violence at least once in their lifetime (Herrman, 2009).
Studies have also shown that the violence is not limited to males against females only as 11% of males
and 8.8% females have reported a violent incident (Herrman, 2009). Although teen dating violence
does not discriminate as to who is a victim or perpetrator, it is believed to occur more often in
minorities and lower socioeconomic classes. These people are also less likely to receive personal or
professional help due to the stigmas of being labeled as victims. Despite that, there are outreach
programs that school can offer for free to prevent and end the continuations of dating violence among
teens. The Center for Disease Controls defines teen dating violence as being either physical,
emotional, or sexual abuse between the victims and perpetrator while bullying is either physical,
verbal, psychological, or relational between a bully and victim (Hertzog, Harpel, Rochelle, 2016).

Scientists have spent decades figuring out what is causing global warming. They have looked at the
natural cycles and events that are known to influence climate. But the amount and pattern of warming
that is been measured can t be explained by these factors alone. The only way to explain the pattern is
to include the effect of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted by humans. One of the first things scientists
learned is that there are several greenhouse gases responsible for warming, and humans emit them in a
variety of ways. Most come from the combustion of fossil fuels in cars, factories and electricity
production. The gas responsible for the most warming is carbon dioxide, also called CO2. Other
contributors include methane released from landfills and agriculture (especially from the digestive
systems of grazing animals), nitrous oxide from fertilizers, gases used for refrigeration and industrial
processes, and the loss of forests that would otherwise store CO2. Desertification could be described
as the spread of a desert environment into arid or semiarid regions, caused by climatic changes, human
influence, or both. (Cline 2007) Climatic factors include periods of temporary but severe drought and
long term climatic changes toward dryness. Human factors include artificial climatic alteration, as
through the removal of vegetation (which can lead to unnaturally high erosion), excessive

Gambling Rate Study
According to gambling rate study, approximately 1.6 billion people gambled at some point during a

extremely shocking statistic. A great number of people whom having gambled in their lives in order to

One side of this problem is when gamblers lose so much money on gambling activities and they
choose to do some illegal things in order to obtain money quickly to continue to gamble. Arthur,
Williams and Belanger (2014) report when gamblers cannot obtain money from legal avenue, they
become anxious and depressed, thus leading them to a misjudgment. At that time, gamblers only focus
on how to obtain more money to gambling, so some individuals will resort to criminal offending to
obtain funds to continue gambling. On the other side, there is a dramatic increase in the number of
crime rate. As the number of slot machine increases, and slot machine usually appear in the street and
shops, many people flow every day in these places, it is easy for people to crime such as robbery and
steal, so it increases crime rate. As a study shows that categories of Index crimes are now significantly
related to the opening casinos in the country or in two or more adjacent countries. Violent crimes
relative to population are estimated to have increased 39.6%, while property crimes are estimated to
have increased 5.9% (Gazel, Rickman Thompson, 2001). Experts also concern about the opening
casinos; most of the crimes are related to casinos. As indicated by statistics, it shows the increase of
crime rate in recent years. Consequently, there is a link between gambling and crime

the pressures from both the dominant white society and the African American community she is a part

Breedlove s fundamental misinterpretation of her role in white society is representative of every
African American in the novel and how they fail to reality test . Similar to how Mrs. Breedlove cannot
meaningfully distinguish between her two worlds, Cholly also fails due to his traumatizing childhood
and Pecola even has a conversation with an imaginary figure at the end, showing her confusion of
internal and external reality. The African American characters exhibit a misunderstanding of their
reality, incapable of comprehending their roles in their community versus the oppressive white one
that surrounds them. Although it might seem like there are some seemingly unaffected African
American characters, such as the narrator Claudia, they also demonstrate abnormal behavior. Claudia,
for example, has an irrational hatred of things, such as the Fishers daughter and dolls, because she
cannot separate their external existence from her internal opinions. Through closely analyzing Mrs.
Breedlove s portrayal as an animal while in white society, one can recognize how every African
American character in the novel is like Mrs. Breedlove in that they share an inability to fully
understand how their role in white society is different from their

Napoleon Equality
Beginning in the late 18th century controversy struck France; arguments over royal legitimacy,
starvation of the people, and lack of equality among the kingdom sparked what is known as the French
Revolution. The Estate System angered the people as it created significant inequality for the working
class and peasants. While many believed the third estate to be the foundation of the country, absolutist
ruler, Louis XVI, favored the first and second estates. As a result, the French Revolution prioritized
the fight for national equality. Napoleon, the son of the revolution, built his empire on liberty and
equality forever: liberte, egalite, fraternite. He came from the third estate, making him a relatable
candidate and became a successful general. While he created a brilliant empire, his lack of dedication
to his core ideals and those of the French Revolution resulted in its demise. ... Show more content on

The Napoleonic Code reasserted the fundamental principles of the Revolution. It stated the equality of
male citizens before the law, secured the wealth and private property of citizens, established religious

the economy and competition. This resulted in substantial financial growth and regulated the currency.
In order to terminate the power of the nobles, Napoleon created a modern bureaucracy that promoted

Analysis Of The Book Maus
Adolf Hitler stated, The Jews are undoubtedly a race, but they are not human. (2) Adolf Hitler was the
man who started the Nazi Regime which became the biggest massacre in the world. The massacre was
known as the Holocaust in which millions of Jews were killed. Maus tells the story of father who was
a Polish Jew at the time of the Holocaust. Maus is also portrayed visually with high angle shots, low
angle shots, curved lines, shadows and rule of thirds. Art Spiegelman drew his graphics in specific
way, which was to grab the reader s attention more to the pictures rather than the words because a
photo can explain a thousand words. There are two underlining stories in Maus. One story is telling
how Vladeck survived Auschwitz and the other story is how Art, Vladeck s son, gets his story from his
father and the relationship between Art and Vladeck.
A graphic novel is a standalone pictorial narrative or a collective of single comic issues published in a
book format. Maus is a graphic novel where Art Spiegelman tell the story of his father s experience in

and high points and rule of thirds. A well balanced frame gives the readers a sense of peace and

Women In Dr. Pepper Advertising
Jane Austen once wrote, I hate to hear you talk about all women as if they were fine ladies instead of
rational creatures. None of us want to be in calm waters all our lives (Quotes by...). This quote was
written in her novel, Persuasion, in 1818, 195 years before a Dr. Pepper ad was made. Back in 1818,
women were all taught to follow the rules that society put on them. They had to be classy and proper
at all times or else they were not considered feminine. The same idea still goes on today. We all have
to all like the same things and act the same way. It is a shame we have not progressed much in making
women and men be treated the same since 1818. These Dr. Pepper ads use women to get consumers to
buy their products by using techniques that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They wanted to spread words about the product and have everyone at least know what it is. They both
have the constraint of offending people. Women could take the ad from 1979 and say it is sexist
because they are using a woman to try and market a product. It is a very common occurrence to use
women in that way because they are using an image of an ideal woman. Putting a strong handsome
man in this ad instead of a woman would change the entire dynamic. If that were the case, men would
be less inclined to go buy Dr. Pepper because it would make them feel like they were buying the drink
to be like the man on the cover. With the ad from 2013, I think the ad makers knew they were going to
offend women, but they probably thought that they would take it more of a joke. Is Dr. Pepper really
appealing to men here, or are they just having fun and looking for a lot of free media attention?
Women being treated less than men is not a funny joke. I think in today s time, those topics should not
be joked about because women are treated different from men and this is still a pressing issue. We
want to move toward gender equality, and ads like Dr. Pepper are setting us back on getting to that
goal. Dr. Pepper got what they wanted; people are talking about their ad and the product, but maybe

Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven Essay
An Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven
Death. A strong topic, frequently but solemnly discussed. However, when I read Edgar Allan Poe s
The Raven , I was immediately captivated by the new angle brought to my attention regarding death.
While the topic of death is usually associated with either sympathy or horror, Poe succeeded in
portraying a feeling caught between the two; and at the same time bringing forth new feelings I would
never thought to consider regarding death. These feelings reflect a sorrow so deep into a psychological
madness, a feeling that the pain death brings has ruined one forever. After analyzing this poem I came
to the conclusion that Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven demonstrates that the sorrow the death of a loved
one brings will stay with you forever. Poe communicated this theme through abstract language , tone,
and allusion.
The opening lines of The Raven identify the speaker as someone who feels tired and weak but is still
awake in the middle of a gloomy night. He passes the time by reading a strange book of ancient
knowledge. The first line of the poem contains alliteration of w in while, weak, and weary to produce
the effect of unsteadiness. This line also sets the poem s rhythmical pattern and provides the first
example of the use of internal rhyme in dreary and weary. The speaker tells of becoming more tired
and beginning to doze but being wakened by a sound that he assumes is a quiet knock. Internal rhymes
of napping, tapping,

Environmental Problems In Picher Oklahoma
The history of the world seldom includes the impact of human conquest upon the environment.
Human s consistently ravage the land and waters around them taking what is considered useful to
mankind with reckless abandon. This continued mentality leaves the world in a damaged state unfit

How Does Deviance Crime And Social Control Affect Society
How do deviance, crimes, and social control impact society? Deviance is said to be the behavior that
violates social norms and arouses negative social reaction. Crimes is the behavior that violates these
laws and is an important type of deviance that concern many Americans. Social control refers to the
ways in which a society tries to prevent and sanction behavior that violates the norms. Deviance,
crimes, and social control are three main category in our society today. Deviance have an impact on
society because as Emile Durkheim explains that it clarifies social norms and increases comformity.
Norms is a standard or pattern of social behavior that is expected in a group and comformity is a type
of social influence involving change in belief behavior in order to fit in with a group. An example

Brown s novel Edgar Huntly were both written during a time of discovery, exploration, and the
questioning of identity in America. The frontier was considered the wild place of the unknown, and in
these two works, the wilderness of the frontier and characters of civilized society interact to form
compelling stories. Mary Rowlandson s narrative and Brown s novel Edgar Huntly both use the theme
of savagery, in which the world of the frontier enables self proclaimed civilized people to rationalize

In another instance she consumed raw horse liver which she described in this manner: I was forced to
take the rest and eat it as it was, with the blood about my mouth, and yet a savory bit it was to me; for
to the hungry soul every bitter thing was sweet (Rowlandson 68). Her description of eating the horse
liver with the image of the blood about her mouth is particularly savage and would normally by
associated only with the Native Americans. She attempts to justify her behavior with her desperate
hunger, and this further reveals the ability of the frontier to create a world in which the civilized
attempt to rationalize their own savage behavior. After she later ate a piece of fawn so tender that she
was able to eat the bones as well as the flesh, Rowlandson relied upon her faith and credited God for
making the normally detestable food delicious to her. She portrays the food as a gift from God when
she states, I would tell the world what a blessing the Lord gave to such mean food (Rowlandon 76).
This also reveals Rowlandson s shifting perspective in the narrative as to what is and is not considered
savagery; At the beginning of the novel, a Native American committing these same actions would
have been considered by Rowlandson to be the most barbarous heathen. Perhaps one of Mary
Rowlandon s most barbarous actions occurred during the eighteenth remove when she stole a piece of

1999, Ling, Naranjo, and Ryngaert, 2000, and Karolyi and Sanders, 1999).3 In an international
context, several studies have found that continental and country specific factors, such as exchange rate
risk, are additional sources of systematic risk (e.g., Eichholtz, et al., 1998, and Liu and Mei, 1996).
Therefore, to appropriately measure both domestic and international real estate return performance, it
is necessary to adequately control for country specific sources of systematic risk. To form a base line,
we first examine the ex post return performance of each country s real estate securities using a single
βeta asset pricing model. Our proxy for the world wealth portfolio (i.e., systematic risk) is the total
return on a broad based index of international stocks. The estimated (Jensen s) alphas from these
regressions provide direct evidence of abnormal riskadjusted return performance. In addition, the
estimated βeta coefficients and coefficients of determination provide evidence on the extent to which
country specific real estate returns respond to a global market risk factor. If returns on real estate
securities in country i are heavily influenced by a world wide risk factor, this may suggest that
investors already diversified internationally with stocks will gain little additional

The regular dieter is in control of the diet. The Deadly Dieter is controlled by the diet. There are five
basic types of Deadly Dieter. Although there are probably as many variations of these basic types as
there are people in the world, all eating disorders fall into one of the Deadly Diets. Fasting. This type
of Deadly Dieter will often try to exist on only 500 calories per day, even though most nutritionists
claim that a starvation diet is no lower than about 1200 calories a day. This person can get so upset
over any extra calories that they begin to see calories where there are virtually none. For example,
some Deadly Dieters are afraid to chew one piece of gum for fear they would take in too many
calories. Binging. People who just binge, and consequently are obese, can also be called Deadly
Dieters. They, too, are out of control. Their diet is constantly on their minds. It begins to kill them (not
only in terms of their health, but socially and personally). Binging Purging. These people often begin
their Deadly Diet as fasters. They soon learn that fasting also cuts them off from most social functions.
In our society it is rare when people get together and don t have some type of food available. The
solution to being thin and yet being able to eat is to get rid of the food they have eaten. The most
common form of purging is vomiting. A much less common method is the overuse of laxatives.

tendency to blame innocent victims stems from a need to cope with threats to our concept of reality.
People generally prefer to consider the world to be just a concept that indicates that people get what
they deserve. This just world view is very integral to the worldview of most people, so when it is
threatened, individuals employ defensive strategies to reestablish a sense of justice in the world
(Hafer, 2000). Blaming the victim in some capacity for misfortunes that befall them is a convenient
way to reestablish a just world view. Such misattribution of blame institutes the possibility that
victims of crimes or disease will be mistreated and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is more likely that a person will engage in victim blaming when the victim in question is an in group
member in some capacity. When a person whom is perceived as belonging to one s in group is
victimized, one s perception of the just world is more likely to be threatened (Correia Vala, 2003).
This is because observers wish to believe themselves as invincible to the same types of misfortune as
those who are victimized, and the more similarities between the observer and the victim, the more the
observer may question this perception of invincibility (Goldenberg Forgas, 2012).
Mood Induction When an individual engages in victim blaming practices, they are attempting to
alleviate psychological discomfort. It is reasonable to suggest, then, that pre existing states of mood
may influence the likelihood of blaming the victim. Mood as resource theory indicates that a positive
mood acts as a resource, which individuals may draw upon when presented with situations that
threaten their world view (Raghunathan Trope, 2002). Because of this, a person in a positive mood is
less likely to engage in victim blaming, while a person in a negative mood is more likely to engage in
victim blaming.

Forensic Anthropology Personal Statement
I am applying for the Forensic Anthropology MSc at the University of Dundee starting in September
2017. I started studying anthropology in 2011, and as soon as I took my first course I became strongly
passionate about this subject. I graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Anthropology in August 2015.
My degree focused on the three main sub fields of anthropology: cultural anthropology, physical
anthropology and archaeology. I am originally from France and I studied in the United States after
being an au pair (live in nanny) in the U.S. for two years which allowed me to become bilingual and
pursue a degree there. During my years at school, I tended to prefer physical anthropology. I took
classes in human evolution, human genetics and primatology ... Show more content on

In the first two weeks we had classes about human osteology, how to determine sex and age at death
in skeletal remains, paleopathology, excavation techniques and how to fill out forensic anthropology
forms. We were lucky to work in a laboratory with numerous skeletal remains to study. The population
that we studied was modern and most individuals were older adults, but we were also able to study
newborn skeletons and one children. In the next two weeks after those classes and practices in the
laboratory, we worked in the field. I worked in a team of four. We excavated two single graves and
worked with other teams on a mass grave. The first individual that we excavated out of the grave was
for a reburial in a family grave. The second single grave that we dug up was to recycle the space
because no one had claimed the person who was buried there for many years. I learnt about
archaeological methods of excavation, taking measurements and sketching as well as filling out
archaeological forms and sorting out archaeological findings. During the last two weeks of the field
school we were back in the laboratory finishing to fill out the forms about the skeletons we dug out
and also studying other skeletons. These six weeks were very intense. We had to learn a lot in a short
amount of time and it was tough to work in the heat, but I would go back in a heartbeat. I had not felt
that much satisfied doing something I am interested in and

Ducker Lake s Water Quality
Abstract Water quality is sometimes ignored by lake management until it affects fish production and
aesthetic values and is significant to test the quality of lakes frequently, sometimes as many as
multiple times a day since the water in the lake could be used as a drinking source for both humans
and animals. Protecting the present quality of the lake is significant when it comes to avoiding future
problems. Duckers Lake s water quality was sampled in spring 2014. Variables that could measure the
water quality of lakes include: dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, temperature, pH, turbidity, and
phosphate and nitrates levels. Mean turbidity levels increased overall throughout the sampling dates,
while pH seemed to decrease overall throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Natural eutrophication is a very slow process that could take years, decades, and sometimes centuries.
The sediment build up in eutrophic lakes will make lakes very shallow. This increases vegetation due
to the increase in light exposure. Anthropogenic eutrophication is a faster process that could occur in
days and months. Anthropogenic eutrophication is due to fertilizer runoff from surrounding areas and
could convert oligotrophic lakes into eutrophic lakes. The difference between oligotrophic lakes and
eutrophic lakes is that oligotrophic lakes have very clear, blue water. Oligotrophic lakes are deep with
low sedimentation levels. Eutrophic lakes have murky, dirty looking water. They are very shallow
with high sedimentation levels. Plants dominate the shoreline because of the increase in light and
vegetation (Walsh

  • 2. Dr. Pepper Case Analysis Dr. Pepper Company I. Case Summary From being a practically unknown soft drink company to now being one of the highest performing of the 1000 largest manufacturing firms, Dr. Pepper has evolved to become an international beverage organization. Dr. Pepper began its roots back in 1880, in Waco, Texas, when a young soda jerk invented a soft drink which he named after his father in law (Dr. Pepper). Robert Lazenby began to market the drink on commercial basis in 1885, and it was not until 1922 that an extensive sales and distribution program was initiated. The current president of the organization is Mr. Woodrow Wilson Clements together with Joe K. Hughes who is the executive VP of the firm. The firm is facing a pressure of product ... An opportunity exists for the firm to venture into new product lines like energy drinks and other culinary applications. C. Internal Weakness 1. The biggest weakness of Dr. Pepper is that it is not diversified. The firm is finding hard to differentiate its products from that of the competitors. The potential of firm is not being tested and evaluated properly on which even Mr. W.W Clements says, It would be criminal to branch off into something else . 2. Another weakness in the firm comes from the ages of the executive officers. Most of the professionals in the firm are growing old and close to their retirement age. Since they have a lot of experience and may work beyond their retirement age, but it would be wise for the firm to take young professionals under their guidance. 3. The firm is producing and wasting its effort and resources in Salute and Waco, fountain syrups, which only accounts for one percent of dollar sales. 4. Dr. Pepper is one brand domestic company. Lack of product diversification and differentiation, and also because of the disadvantage against multination organizations like Coca Cola and Pepsi CO., Dr. Pepper is not the leading seller in any major United States market. 5. Denmark (1994) highlighted that deaf people within the general population were more likely to be referred with disturbance of behaviour than other types of mental health issues. Hearing loss is an invisible disability that affects people of any age group, from neonates to older adults. People with learning disabilities will already have communication limitations, compromising their education, social functioning and safety. This may be compounded if there is a concurrent hearing loss. Reported prevalence of hearing impairment varies from 12.3% to 47% . Some causes of audiological impairment may be easily corrected, such as impacted ear wax, which occurs commonly in this population. However, a person with limited or no verbal communication skills may have difficulty in conveying deterioration in hearing. In addition, difficulties may be attributed incorrectly to an underlying behavioural problem. It is known that hearing impairment is frequently unrecognised and under reported by paid carers.Hearing impairment increases with age, severity of hearing disability and the presence of Down s syndrome. Early detection and intervention should be beneficial. Imperialism is when one country dominates the cultural, economic, and political life of a nation weaker than itself. In the 19th century, Europe was the nation that was dominating both China and Africa. There were quite a few similarities in the way that European imperialism was changing these nations. One important similarity was that both the nations had resisted against British imperialism at one point. However, despite the fact that both these events occurred at the same time, by the same nations, there were quite a few differences as well. One of the main differences due to the impact of Imperialism in China ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason there was resistance faced from both these nations was simply because both were independent nations. One of the major differences in between China and Africa during the period of their Imperialism was that the Chinese people had a revolution while the Africans did not. In China Sun Yat Sen wanted to end the dynasty system in China and he did this by starting a revolution. Soon, the government had learned about his plans and he went to the west to gather support to overthrow the Manchu Dynasty. He wanted to do this because he believed that China should be a republic otherwise they would fall behind all the other nations. Sun Yat Sen had created the three principles and eventually these three principles became very well known and soon another uprising which was successful ended the Manchu dynasty. China finally became a Republic. Another major difference between the Imperialism in Africa and China was that China was harder to conquer than Africa because for one, China had a centralized government. This meant that the Chinese would most probably have one large military, which it did. Another reason it was harder to conquer was that it was much farther than Africa was for the British. This led to more difficulties in travelling to get to China. Also, in China there was one unified language whereas in Africa there were multiple languages. One more difficulty was that the people were also more unified ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As both Watson and Czech (2005) are sport psychologists, their research examines the importance of religion, its effect on an athlete s psychological state, as well as the affect it has on athlete s overall performance in competition. Watson and Czech (2005) first define religion and spirituality so as the reader can fully understand what the author s writing and research findings mean. • 12. Relationship Between Intelligence And Creativity What is the relationship between intelligence and creativity? In this essay I will explore the correlation between intelligence (IQ) and creativity (DT), and whether one is influenced or can be predicted by the existence of the other. The relationship between IQ (intelligence quotient) and creativity has been an anchor point for psychological research. Numerous amounts of psychologists have carried out research in order to find evidence to support this idea of a correlation or evidence to disprove the hypothesis that IQ and creativity could be related. IQ is defined as a measure of intelligence that shows the ratio of an individual s mental age to their chronological age, this is then multiplied by 100 (Cattel 1972). Creativity cannot be measured by undertaking an IQ test, creativity is subjective and the simplest way of defining it is the ability to create original, useful and surprising new things. However, over the years pioneering research has inspired psychologists to devise tests to measure creativity. The most famous Divergent Thinking test is Guildfords Alternative Uses Task established in 1967. This test proposes that the individual involved should think of alternative uses for a common item such as a brick. This way of measuring Divergent Thinking is universally used in contemporary testing of creativity. In order to analyse and examine whether or not creativity and IQ have a relationship and whether its influential on each other, I looked at the founding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Renaissance occurred between the 14th and 17th century when there was revival in both learning and culture in Europe. It began in Florence, Italy and traveled throughout other city states in Italy. It mainly occurred in Italy due to the history of Rome and Roman Empire. Italy was so wealthy that people were willing to spend their money to encourage the artists. With that being said, the Renaissance was a time in which society experienced an enormous growth. This development was not only financial, but also in the cultural areas. Artists and Bookman were perusing the teachings and artwork of ancient Greece and Rome. The CO2 laser creates an infrared light at a 10600 nm wavelength that produces a thermal effect on targeted tissue. The energy from the laser rapidly heats intracellular and extracellular water to 100 ºC, causing vaporization, thus disrupting cell membranes and causing cell death. The laser is used to vaporize a layer of epithelium, and this skin is cleared from the field with a moistened cotton tip applicator or gauze. Johnson et al. described the depth of treatment for CO2 laser therapy, as several histologic layers can be differentiated with consecutive laser passes, such that the full depth of dysplastic involvement can be removed. Thus, use of the laser is theoretically curative for AC and does not cause deep dermal damage with ensuing scar formation. Several studies on the optimal technique to treat AC lesions by CO2 laser recommend a superpulsed mode rather than continuous wave form, as pulsed laser therapy decreases recovery time and scarring potential. Non State Networks That Emerge During War Non state networks that emerge during war are largely informed by the country s peacetime dynamics, adjusting to opportunities and challenges in a less secure environment. Are they inherently predatory, undermining the state and stripping its assets or can they be foundations from which a strong civil society can be built upon as, ostensibly, relative stability returns? Different actors in a conflict have different tools at their disposal and thus divergent mechanisms for harnessing power. Picard (2000) categorises four organizational networks that emerged during Lebanon s fifteen year civil war: ideological and welfare based entities; loosely controlled armed groups; autonomous principalities; and corporatist structures. It goes without saying that these categories are not rigid and can exhibit overlapping characteristics. Their separation however serves a useful analytical purpose and reveals the diversity in the means devised, to both maintain local legitimacy and maintain a steady revenue stream, devised by those who take part in war making. In this paper I will also talk about what equipment it will take to make a 3D print, But first we will talk about the steps to make a 3D design. There are eight steps to print a 3D design. The first step is to start with making a virtual design of an object you want to create. The file that you create the image from is called a (CAD) or Computer Aided Design file. This software may provide some hints to the structural integrity you can expect in the finished product. It will also help you with specific data about certain materials to create virtual simulations of how the project will behave under certain conditions. The second step is called Conversion to STL. You will have to convert the CAD drawing, to the STL format. STL is an acronym for standard tessellation language. First a warning, musical, then the hour, irrevocable this reminds the reader that this story is in fact occurring in a single day and every event experienced outside of this timeframe is a figment of a characters memory. Woolf makes these memories the focus of the novel rather than external time to create a mobile reality where she fabricates the sense of movement by traversing time through the consciousness of her characters. They have looked at the natural cycles and events that are known to influence climate. But the amount and pattern of warming that is been measured can t be explained by these factors alone. The only way to explain the pattern is to include the effect of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted by humans. One of the first things scientists learned is that there are several greenhouse gases responsible for warming, and humans emit them in a variety of ways. Most come from the combustion of fossil fuels in cars, factories and electricity production. The gas responsible for the most warming is carbon dioxide, also called CO2. Other contributors include methane released from landfills and agriculture (especially from the digestive systems of grazing animals), nitrous oxide from fertilizers, gases used for refrigeration and industrial processes, and the loss of forests that would otherwise store CO2. Desertification could be described as the spread of a desert environment into arid or semiarid regions, caused by climatic changes, human influence, or both. (Cline 2007) Climatic factors include periods of temporary but severe drought and long term climatic changes toward dryness. The African American characters exhibit a misunderstanding of their reality, incapable of comprehending their roles in their community versus the oppressive white one that surrounds them. Although it might seem like there are some seemingly unaffected African American characters, such as the narrator Claudia, they also demonstrate abnormal behavior. Claudia, for example, has an irrational hatred of things, such as the Fishers daughter and dolls, because she cannot separate their external existence from her internal opinions. Napoleon Equality Beginning in the late 18th century controversy struck France; arguments over royal legitimacy, starvation of the people, and lack of equality among the kingdom sparked what is known as the French Revolution. While many believed the third estate to be the foundation of the country, absolutist ruler, Louis XVI, favored the first and second estates. Back in 1818, women were all taught to follow the rules that society put on them. They had to be classy and proper at all times or else they were not considered feminine. The same idea still goes on today. We all have to all like the same things and act the same way. It is a shame we have not progressed much in making women and men be treated the same since 1818. They wanted to spread words about the product and have everyone at least know what it is. They both have the constraint of offending people. Women could take the ad from 1979 and say it is sexist because they are using a woman to try and market a product. It is a very common occurrence to use women in that way because they are using an image of an ideal woman. Putting a strong handsome man in this ad instead of a woman would change the entire dynamic. If that were the case, men would be less inclined to go buy Dr. Pepper because it would make them feel like they were buying the drink to be like the man on the cover. With the ad from 2013, I think the ad makers knew they were going to offend women, but they probably thought that they would take it more of a joke. Is Dr. Pepper really appealing to men here, or are they just having fun and looking for a lot of free media attention? Women being treated less than men is not a funny joke. I think in today s time, those topics should not be joked about because women are treated different from men and this is still a pressing issue. • 32. Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven Essay An Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven Death. A strong topic, frequently but solemnly discussed. However, when I read Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven , I was immediately captivated by the new angle brought to my attention regarding death. While the topic of death is usually associated with either sympathy or horror, Poe succeeded in portraying a feeling caught between the two; and at the same time bringing forth new feelings I would never thought to consider regarding death. These feelings reflect a sorrow so deep into a psychological madness, a feeling that the pain death brings has ruined one forever. After analyzing this poem I came to the conclusion that Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven demonstrates that the sorrow the death of a loved one brings will stay with you forever. Poe communicated this theme through abstract language , tone, and allusion. The opening lines of The Raven identify the speaker as someone who feels tired and weak but is still awake in the middle of a gloomy night. He passes the time by reading a strange book of ancient knowledge. The first line of the poem contains alliteration of w in while, weak, and weary to produce the effect of unsteadiness. Her description of eating the horse liver with the image of the blood about her mouth is particularly savage and would normally by associated only with the Native Americans. Therefore, to appropriately measure both domestic and international real estate return performance, it is necessary to adequately control for country specific sources of systematic risk. To form a base line, we first examine the ex post return performance of each country s real estate securities using a single βeta asset pricing model. Our proxy for the world wealth portfolio (i.e., systematic risk) is the total return on a broad based index of international stocks. The estimated (Jensen s) alphas from these regressions provide direct evidence of abnormal riskadjusted return performance. In addition, the estimated βeta coefficients and coefficients of determination provide evidence on the extent to which country specific real estate returns respond to a global market risk factor. • 41. Victim Blaming Sociology The phenomenon of victim blaming is a multifaceted topic with far reaching consequences. The tendency to blame innocent victims stems from a need to cope with threats to our concept of reality. People generally prefer to consider the world to be just a concept that indicates that people get what they deserve. This just world view is very integral to the worldview of most people, so when it is threatened, individuals employ defensive strategies to reestablish a sense of justice in the world (Hafer, 2000). Blaming the victim in some capacity for misfortunes that befall them is a convenient way to reestablish a just world view. It is more likely that a person will engage in victim blaming when the victim in question is an in group member in some capacity. When a person whom is perceived as belonging to one s in group is victimized, one s perception of the just world is more likely to be threatened (Correia Vala, 2003). This is because observers wish to believe themselves as invincible to the same types of misfortune as those who are victimized, and the more similarities between the observer and the victim, the more the observer may question this perception of invincibility (Goldenberg Forgas, 2012). Mood Induction When an individual engages in victim blaming practices, they are attempting to alleviate psychological discomfort. It is reasonable to suggest, then, that pre existing states of mood may influence the likelihood of blaming the victim. Mood as resource theory indicates that a positive mood acts as a resource, which individuals may draw upon when presented with situations that threaten their world view (Raghunathan Trope, 2002).
