Funds Of Knowledge
As educators, we spend a great amount of time looking for different ways to implementing
curriculum, meeting school and district deadlines, assessing, planning, and grading. But do we
ever take time to really get to know our students and their families in a personal level? Without
event knowing, we hold different biases towards students and their parents; we expect them to
have certain knowledge about their community and culture depending on their demographics and
socioeconomic status. We completely ignore the fact that many parents can make positive
contributions to our classrooms. In the book Funds of Knowledge edited by Norma Gonzalez,
Luis C. Moll, and Cathy Amanti, we can see how many families have abundant knowledge that
the schools/teachers do not know about and therefore do not use in order to teach academic
skills. I agree with the authors, It is precisely through information of these kinds of social
activities that we identify funds of knowledge that can be used in the classroom to help improve
academic development (Gonzalez, Moll Amanti, 2005, Pg. 80). We start teaching at the beginning
of the school year holding biases towards certain students. Sometimes we heard in the office or
teacher lounge that student XYZ is a nightmare , we are scared of those students because we are
afraid they will ruin our classroom environment. This was my mentality when I first stepped into a
classroom as a tutor. I worked for the CA Mini Corps program tutoring migrant

Berkeley Admissions Essay
The election night of 2000 was a pivotal moment in my life. I stayed up all night on November
7th, 2000, not because I was enthralled with watching Florida flip flop between Gore and Bush,
but because I had an IV in my arm which made it impossible to be comfortable. Earlier that
evening, I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes, a disease affecting 1 of 800 people in
America. This was an especially crucial time in my life, considering I was diagnosed with
Ulcerative Colitis an autoimmune disease that attacks the GI track in 1 of 1400 Americans the
June before, and I had my Bar Mitzvah in September. According to the Jewish religion, I had
become an adult, and as such, I had decided to greet my new medical challenges with gusto,
attempting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I found the latter to be the most satisfying, as many kids, especially the older ones, were curious
about the effects, but hesitant to ask an adult about the repercussions. The most challenging thing
to me was the number of parents who seemed to simply give up. I saw a large amount of inaction;
which in the case of diabetes is simply unacceptable. I enjoyed educating and motivating these kids
to make beneficial lifestyle changes, so that good health rather than disease can help to define their
futures, as well as my own.
While I started my volunteer educational program, another man was well ensconced in his own.
Al Gore took up a cause that many people seemed to be ignoring, our environment. The issues of
climate change and general environmentalism are very important to me. I see similarities
between the challenges of managing a clean environment for our globe and the challenges of
managing good health to me. Through concerted efforts to make routine changes we have the
capacity to live more ecologically friendly, and often healthier lives. I have seen that with just a
few adjustments, I can control my diabetes to the point where most people do not even know I
have it. Likewise, I believe that if we commit to making fundamental changes in the way we go
about our lives, we can easily remedy several environmental issues we face today. By going to
Berkeley Law School and focusing on Environmental Law, I can apply my own life s lessons

money and class in america Essay example
In the book Money and Class in America written by Lewis Lapham, the way Americans look at
money is exposed. It compares other nations view on monetary value against that of the
Americans. It is a fact that we place more value on money than anything else. This book illustrates
the corruptness of the American Dream as it focuses money as the currency of the soul and
through the dream, men remain free to rise or fall. Their life is the product of the effort and the
decisions put forth by them. To start off, money in the U.S. is perceived as the currency of the
soul. It makes the world go round. Lapham writes, They had been so deflected by the pursuit of
money that they could turn in no other direction. . In my opinion, Americans... Show more content

He quit smoking and chewing tobacco just to save up those extra few dollars. Although he was
in illegal activities, such as selling alcohol which in that time was illegal, he was a thug . He
made sure that no matter what he was doing, he accomplished his goal of having money. In the
original dream, all the hard work you had to put forth to achieve your goal was like a lesson
learned. However, in our century s corrupted dream, all the struggles are worth it as long as you
make it to the riches and the high standards of life. The whole act itself revolves completely out of
money. It is more important to showcase items and mount them on walls then to show intelligence,
faith and families. It is sad to say, but in our American Dream, the corrupted one that is, greenbacks
are worth more than one s honor. Other nations look upon the American devotion as sterile cupidity
and insanity. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby, Daisy and Tom are an excellent example of the
importance of being wealthy. Lapham expresses his opinion on Americans as Philistinism.
Americans base their success on property and luxuries. Without that, they are not truly happy or
satisfied with what they did in their life period. If the goal of becoming rich is achieved,
everything might not be so great after all. The circle of people associated with you are just there
for the luxury. Take the Gatsby as an example. No one went to his funeral, not even Daisy. She was

The Origins Of The And Riel Rebellion
The MГ©tis/ Riel rebellion is one that echoes in Canadian history. It is the cause for much
distress on both the rebel and the side of the government of Canada. This tail includes different
rebellions which intertwine together; the Red River Rebellion, and the North West Rebellion.
The Red River rebellion itself dates back to 1869 and ended in 1870, while the North West
Rebellion occurred in 1885; which was a quick and deadly revolution (New, 2002:826). The lead
up to these historic event date back much earlier than 1869. Multiple events collided together
resulting with the people in what is known today as Manitoba, coming together and revolting
against the Canadian Government. All in which that dates back to the 1850 s. Throughout this...

The settlers had come to the West to enter the fur trade, and began to create families with their
Native American wives. A MГ©tis is an individual who is made up by a having both Native, and
a European blood in their ancestry line (Asch, 1984:5). The MГ©tis are the people that primarily
made up the Red River Colony, along with the French Catholic citizens that immigrated over. By
the 1950 s the Hudson Bay Company; HBC, has started to endure many attempts from Canada, the
United States, and Britain to take over its land; resulting in Canada becoming the victor by buying
Rupert s Land three years after confederation. The final sale price was $1.5 million which made
up the largest real estate transition by land area in Canada s history. (Bumsted, 06) It is at this time
that chaos begins to ensue across Rupert s Land and with those that dwell within its borders.
Protestants begin to flood the land, each bringing their culture and heritage with them. With each
new member immigrating to the newly brought land, the fears its original habitant s loss of
heritage grew. Land that was once owned by the francophone, MГ©tis and aboriginal settlers
slowly became tainted by their new Protestant neighbours. The neither British crown nor Canadian
government made any attempt to put their mind at ease, and help them with their fear of losing
everything they hold dear; instead they chose to act as if Rupert s land had no previous
inhabitants. By 1969 an individual by the name of Louis Riel

Essay on American Women Leaving the Home and Going to Work
One of the most significant sociological changes in the nation s history began in the last decade of
the nineteenth century and the ramifications are still being felt today. This change consisted of the
large numbers of women who entered the work force. This dramatic change in American society
was accompanied by a great deal of controversy and prejudice directed towards women. It was
predicted that femaleemployment would bring about the downfall of society and the change of the
American family.
While a large portion of the public was appalled by the thought of independent young working
women, they were also fascinated. Therefore, the attitudes of the public toward these women can be
seen in the literature that was produced at that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, the prejudice against female workers essentially allowed their employers at the
various factories to blame the women themselves for their low wages. The standard argument was
that these women did not need to work. Part of this concept was that these women were supported
by fathers, brothers, etc. and only wanted the jobs so they would have money for nice clothes and
extras . Despite numerous government statistics that demonstrated financial need by many female
workers, the prevailing attitude was that women brought their low earnings on themselves (Kessler
Harris 100).
This, of course, totally ignored the government statistics that pertained to immigrant families and
minorities, where family finances were the prime motivating factor towards women joining the
work force (Kessler Harris 123). Additionally, the census figures that showed immigrant wives as
not working failed to take into consideration that these women were usually employed as their
husband s assistants (Anonymous 25; Kessler Harris 124).
Those knowledgeable about working conditions within New York s factories found the facts to be
far different from this scenario. While some women lived at home, many did not. At a weekly
wage of eight to ten dollars per week, these women generally paid five to six of that for their rooms

During my post graduate studies at The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Personal and

and problem solving. I had many thoughts going ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When students reflect upon their learning, they engage in a potentially transformative act of
responding to, connecting with, and analyzing an experience, event, process, or product. Reflection
is thus one way to bridge the separate thought and action: an opportunity for students to describe
their internal processes, evaluate their challenges, and recognize their triumphs in ways that would
otherwise remain unarticulated (Allan Driscoll 2014). Being a reflective learner would therefore
help me be more proactive in applying my existing knowledge to create new ideas and improve my
understanding of course material. Reflective learning would also have a positive impact on my
future career since I would be able to develop my learning and thinking abilities by building on
the critical evaluation of my past learning experiences and applying them to my work. I believe
this would make me self aware and give me the ability to identify and address my strengths and
weaknesses. I therefore agree with the argument by (Moon, 2002) that reflection improves the
depth and relevance of individual learning (Moon, 2000 cited by Trehan, 2008). If I had no
knowledge of effective learning skills, I would have been stressed out whenever I come across an
academic, social or professional challenge which would have had a negative impact on my
performance in the long run.

Double Indemnity Summary
In Part II: The Private Investigator of The Longman Anthology of Detective Fiction it says, The
original world of the hard boiled detective was clearly a male one, where women were suspect
and dangerous. (as cited in Mansfield Kelley and Marchino, 2005, p.207). In the cases of Double
Indemnity, directed by Billy Wilder, and The Gutting of Couffignal, wrote by Dashiell Hammett
,
this is exactly the case. Both are, in the case of Double Indemnity based off of, hard boiled
detective stories in which the women are cunning, manipulative, and dangerous. The women are
strategically oriented, have little regard to others, and are selfish. They also blindly rely on the

In Double Indemnity, Phyllis relied on Walter, the insurance company, and Keyes (the investigator).
She relied that Walter would actually carry out the murder, that he wouldn t rat her out, and
wouldn t get caught. She relied on the insurance company to accept the insurance claim and not to
pursue a detailed investigation. Indirectly, she relied on Keyes to not figure out that she was
involved or that a murder even took place. In The Gutting of Couffignal, the princess relied on the
investigator and (not so blindly) her people. She had to trust that the investigator wouldn t figure

they were instructed. Both trusted fate as well. Regardless of their methodical nature, their plans

South Afric A Long And Bloody History
Where the warm waters of the Indian Ocean meet the subtropical shoreline of South Africa s
eastern coast lies the Dhlinza Forest. Under the cool shade of the arching canopy, the stillness and
stifling silence imparts a feeling of serenity: even its name alludes to this, meaning place of grave
meditation in the Zulu language. Despite this apparent lifelessness, it is considered one of the
greatest examples of unique biodiversity in all of southern Africa. Within the towering trees, under
crackling leaf beds and between the broken boulders live hundreds of species of animal, including
rare and endangered birds, insects and reptiles. On the very edge of the Dhlinza forest lies the semi

Absentmindedly, he aims a half hearted kick at his prized football while he tries to recall his

and snatches his crumpled white shirt and his dirty grey trousers with the worn out knees. He
pulls them on and brushes the most visible grime off his front. There is a slightly misshapen
ochre jug sitting by the door, filled with water the colour of river mud. His mother must have
drawn it from the well before heading out to her first job. He washes his face with the brackish
water, not certain if all he is doing is spreading the dirt around more evenly. Eventually satisfied,
he makes his way into the other room of the house, in search of breakfast. A hopeful investigation
of the cupboards reveals nothing but stale air. Sibusiso shrugs. It s just going to be one of those

Comparing Influences
Comparing Influences: Faulkner and Plath
In the poem Daddy by Sylvia Plath tells about a woman suffering because of the pain inflicted by
her father. The story is narrated in first person point of view by the author using aggressive tone to
describe the antagonist of the play in the narrator s thoughts. In relation to the poem, William
Faulkner s A Rose For Emily tells a story of a woman who used to be a bright young girl, but has
become a symbol of decay and a obsolete object that is a part of history. The story is told from a
third person point of view and talks about the grievances Miss Emily had to withstand from her
father s death. Both the poem and the short story tell of a woman who had a fatherly figure that
acted as an antagonist throughout the story, but both women were influenced in a different way.

In the poem Daddy , the narrator quotes that her father was a Nazi Fascist who would mistreat
Jews the same way he mistreated her. The evidence shown by the father indicates that the
narrator was mistreated when she says The boot in the face, the brute Brute heart of a brute like
you (Plath, 10). Because of her father s mistreatment, the narrator was influenced to commit
suicide. In A Rose For Emily , her father has influenced Emily by not providing self sufficiency to
Emily making her co dependent on her father so when she became older, she could not keep
healthy relationships or have developed good communication skills which ultimately led to her
insanity. Examples of Miss Emily s dependence and insanity is shown when she would
continuously say that her father is not dead to the doctors and saying that they should not dispose
of the body (Faulkner, 19). In both pieces of literature, the masculine figure in the family has

humoral theory, writing (8). Compare and contrast the idea of the body as a semipermeable,
irrigated container in two texts covered in the course. Relate your analysis of the two texts to
humoral theory. In Renaissance Literature, the body has been interpreted in different ways.
Renaissance writers understood the body as consisting of four humors: black bile, yellow bile,

However, in Elizabethan drama, men played all roles, which meant that female experiences and
emotions were not allowed to come to the fore. (Paster) The effect of humoralism is influenced by
how the body is constructed due to social interactions in the external world. Paster allows for a
contemporary perception of the body. She uses the body as a representation of how people feel and
how they express these feelings through body language by outlining the difference humoralism, or
any other influential account of human physiology, makes to the subjective experience of being in
the body and thus to such matters as the inescapable...experience of bodily shame (Paster 3) In The
Body Embarrassed, Paster argues that the body can be seen as semipermeable, irrigated container
because the impact of humoral theory distinguishes between a social and physical body which
connects the experience from within the body with the outer body. This means that the individual s
emotional experiences are shown by the external depictions and perceptions of their

Utilitarianism Vs. Utilitarianism Theory
In the history of philosophy Utilitarianism has been viewed as one of the best of the moral theories.
It has become one the most powerful, influential, and most persuasive approach to normative ethics.
The utilitarianism theory also has had a major impacts on approaches to economic, political, and
social policy. The utilitarianismtheory had originally had been created by Jeremy Bentham. His
version of was that aggregate pleasure after deducting suffering of all involved in any action.
However, this was later revised by John Stuart Mill He has revised the concept of utility and has
brought forth the Greatest Happiness Principle .
First off, utilitarianism is the philosophical view about how we should evaluate a things that are
involve choices that people have to make. These things that are evaluated are actions, laws,
policies, character traits, and moral codes. In general, whatever is being evaluated, we are the ones
that have to choose the one that will produce the best overall results. Utilitarianism is also a form of
consequentialism this is because utilitarianism is based on the consequences or results of actions
that are the only standard of right and wrong. Utilitarian s say that we should choose the option that
has maximizes utility, i.e. that action or policy that produces the largest amount of good. Although
it may be similar to Utilitarianism is distinctly different from other forms of consequentialism such
as egoism as it considers all interests equally. On

Whoso List To Hunt I Know Where Is An Hind Poem Analysis
Close Reading Exercise: Whoso List to Hunt, I Know Where is an Hind
1. In the poem Whoso List to Hunt, I Know Where is an Hind written by Sir Thomas Wyatt, in my
opinion, the most appropriate meaning of the word hind is the female of the deer, esp. of the red
deer (Oxford English Dictionary Online).
2. Using hind as a metaphor to a charming lady who is flirty but hard to approach is the central
metaphor of this poem. In this sonnet, Sir Thomas Wyattalmost applied this metaphor throughout
the entire poem. The language from line 1 to line 10 seems to focus on the activity of deer
hunting: the speaker is attracted by a female deer and chases the deer from far behind, but he is
exhausted and gives up as the deer flees; however, the use of she and her in these lines may be a
suggestion of a metaphor. The last four lines then revealed the speech of using hind as a metaphor
for lady by adding the components of diamonds , her fair neck and for Caesar s ; thus the readers
could understand the real intention that hidden under the speaker s metaphor by comparing the
similarity of a female deer and a fair lady: both are beautiful but wild. ... Show more content on

speaker s feeling of helpless and bitter by giving up the effort of pursuing. The rhyme of lines 5 8

rhyme in lines 1 4; however, visual rhymes appear in the two words mind and wind , which stands

Justice In Plato s The Republic Essay
Justice In Plato s The Republic
Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote One man s justice is another s injustice. This statement quite
adequately describes the relation between definitions of justice presented by Polemarchus and
Thrasymachus in Book I of the Republic. Polemarchus initially asserts that justice is to give to each
what is owed (Republic 331d), a definition he picked up from Simonides. Then, through the
unrelenting questioning of Socrates, Polemarchus definition evolves into doing good to friends and
harm to enemies (Republic 332d), but this definition proves insufficient to Socrates also.
Eventually, the two agree that it is never just to harm anyone (Republic 335d). This definition is
fundamental to the idea of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although he leaves no room for the common good in his definition, his life seems to allow for
some common good. This is based on his profession as an educator, whose job it is to share
knowledge with others and on his willingness to remain a contributing part of the discussion going
on at the house of Polemarchus
To determine which of these two definitions gives a better account of the good life it is necessary
to establish what this good life is. According to Socrates in the Apology it is the greatest good
for a man to discuss virtue every day ... for the unexamined life is not worth living (38d). What
this statement implies is that to live a good life we must first question and ponder our own ideas
of a good life and then do the same with other peoples ideas. In this sense Polemarchus s definition
of justice most closely fits the good life because he allows for a common good that would result
from examining the ideas of others and the sharing of information.
To further display that Polemarchus definition of justice gives a better account of the good life I
put forth my own definition of the good life . I have come to conclude through the lessons life has
taught me thus far that the good life is one composed of love and understanding. Love of one s self
because with this I can maintain a sound mind and body, but without it I cannot love others. Love
of family because

The Swing Portrays by Jean-HonorГ© Fragonard
Jean HonorГ© Fragonard created The Swing in 1766 with oil paints on a 2 8.6 by 2 2 canvas. It
is located in London, England in the Wallace Collection. During the time this work was created,
France was an aristocracy and The Swing portrays a glimpse of the luxurious life of the ruling
class. King Louis XV ruled during a time when France was the most prosperous and powerful
country in all of Europe. Through the influence of Madame de Pompadour, the arts prospered
during this time. In the 18th century during King Louis reign the arts seemed to consume the
thoughts of not only the artists themselves but also the King and other wealthy and influential
members of society. This in turn resulted in neglect of the undertakings of the state, which had its
consequences. In 1789, the bloody French Revolution took place and soon after, the fall of the
monarchy. The Swing is undoubtedly the most famous of all Fragonard s compositions. It
epitomizes the Rococo style of the 18th century with tranquil colors and gentle light, exaggerated
diagonals, decorations, and nature. . The libertine Baron de St. Julien commissioned this piece. He
ordered that Fragonard paint the bishop pushing his Madame on a swing. Fragonard painted for
the baron de Saint Julien his first great masterpiece and from then on he knew that for the rest of
his life he would paint for people of wealth. He painted for many individuals including the king
because his talent was something that everyone desired. The

Essay on Sociology of Health and Medicine
Mike Bury (2001) has undertaken a considerable amount of research on illness narratives and its
different forms. Illness narratives and narrative analysis can be evaluated through three different
types. The first is contingent narratives, which address beliefs about the origins of disease, the
proximate causes of an illness episode, and the immediate effects of illness in everyday life (Bury
2011, p. 263). Secondly, another form of narratives are moral narratives, which provide accounts of
(and help to constitute) changes between the person, the illness and social identity, and which help
to (re) establish the moral status of the individual or help to maintain social distance (Bury 2011, p.
263). Lastly, Bury defined the third form of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Although there is an abundance of previous research conducted on the effects of marijuana use on
work/school (Earleywine 2002, Neinstein 2002, Roffman, R, Stephens, R Marlatt G 2006), the
participants involved continue to have both positive and negative accounts for marijuana use on
work and school. The various detrimental effects range from the effects that marijuana has such as
the changes of capabilities that are required for activities such as work and/or study. These include
motivation, memory and cognition and also capabilities of vehicle operation for work including
visual perception and divided attention. The use of marijuana has been found to have a range of
harmful effects on the health state of an individual, which can affect work ability (Smith et al.
2013). Involved in this are the potential for a progression to harder drugs, mental illness, worsened
immune function, lung cancer and brain tissue damage (Earleywine 2002). However, some
researchers do not believe that all the side effects of marijuana use have negative consequences. For
example (Aronson 2009) believes that it has a significant positive contribution in medical value
with the treatment of conditions that may be detrimental to work ability. These include issues such
as pain, nausea, appetite loss and neurological disorders.

The theme is how when you have a tough, important moment in life, you have to make the best of
it and move along. An image for these lyrics will help you connect to the theme because you can

I will be talking about how the singers used repetition to emphasize certain points. In these songs,
lyrics were repeated. Repetition draws the listener s attention to particular words or phrases. In the
song, Time of Your Life, the singer repeats the line, It s something unpredictable, but in the end it s
right. I hope you had the time of your life. This line is repeated throughout the song multiple times.
The singer is emphasizing the fact that anything can happen when you make your choice but in the
end, you have to just relax and be happy. He wants the audience to really understand it. In the other
song, the line, Move along, move along. Just to make it through The singer is repeating the term,
Move along because that is the main message in this song. It is to move along when things seem
bad. The singer wants the audience to really get the message and to feel good when they relate to

situations and being satisfied with the outcome. These lyrics were emphasized well. Besides
repetition, the singers also used symbols and juxtaposition to

Chemistry s Presence in Technology Isn t Always Blatantly...
It is typical when analyzing technology for the presence of chemistry to be hardly noticed or
failed to be seen at all. This is a false assessment, and is caused by simply not looking close
enough. Chemistry s presence is not always blatantly obvious, even though it is truly at the root
of most all technology we use on a daily basis. One of the fields of technology that we do in fact
use on a daily basis that chemistry impacts, and therefore impacts whole other genres of technology,
is the battery. Although often taken for granted, the battery is a huge part of the technology we use
today and chemistry is integral to it. The advancement of chemistry advances the technology and
materials we use to make batteries and therefore advances a... Show more content on

With the foundation of the battery s origin understood, a basic understanding of how a battery
works is needed to see how new resources improved upon it. A battery consists of one or many
cells. Within a cell there is a cathode and an anode that are separated by an electrolyte. The
electrolyte is typically an acid or a salt. When a closed circuit is made between the anode and the
cathode, the positive ions move from the anode to the cathode, and the negative ions move from
the cathode to the anode. The movement of ions causes a current that can be harnessed (Battery
168). The whole idea of a battery is a chemistry concept, but where chemistry is useful now is
finding new materials for the anode, cathode, and electrolyte to make stronger currents. It is easy
to see that current day batteries have advanced beyond using vinegar and iron bars such as the
Parthian Battery. Typical batteries today are alkaline batteries. These batteries are far more
complex than the Parthian Battery and use a wide array of elements to create a strong current.
Alkaline batteries are able to be and used because of knowledge we have gained through chemistry
research. It was not by accident that certain elements came together to create an alkaline battery, it
was through pursuit in the understanding of chemistry. The battery was able to be advanced by
discovery of new resources that were found to be useful in a battery cell, and this concept

James Clark s Article, Without Evidence Or Argument
In Kelly James Clark s Article Without Evidence or Argument , Clark argues that belief in God,
does not require the support of evidence or argument in order for it to be rational. Clark s

everything must be believed only on the basis of sufficient evidence (139). Throughout Kelly Clark

In Clifford s universal demand for evidence he states that you base all of your beliefs on
evidence (138). Clark utilizes this premise to restate the argument in which he will eventually
will give reasoning to why the claim is false. In the article he foreshadows the problem with
Clifford s demand for evidence by saying, No one would disagree: some beliefs require evidence
for their rational acceptability. But all beliefs in every circumstance? (139) Clark is somewhat
supporting the demand for evidence. However, he does not find it rational to believe that evidence
is required in every situation.
This leads us to our next premise, premise II, which states there are rational beliefs that are not
supported by sufficient evidence. Clark identifies these rational beliefs as those acquired through
sensory experience and beliefs that are self evident. He supports this premise by giving examples of
some of these beliefs ..The sky is blue, grass is green .. (139). He goes on to say, ...every proposition
is either true or false.. (139). I think that by Clark including these examples of beliefs through
sensory experiences and self evidence, he seems to be saying that through our experiences, one
can acquire beliefs even if our beliefs are false. It is rational to believe that the sky is blue
because it is a belief we acquire through seeing the sky is blue. But according to Clark, seeing that
the sky is blue is not enough sufficient evidence (like the sufficient

Essay On Disruption In Airline Industry
Disruption in the Airline Industry

Abstract

Disruption in the Airline Industry Conceptual air carrier, Poppi, provides the framework for an
analysis that will be discussed throughout this paper in regards to disruptive technologies and their
effect on the airline industry. Baltzan (2015, p. 231) observes that disruptive technologies are a new
way of doing things that initially does not meet the needs of existing customer. Shu (2015) offers
the airline industry is continually trying to reinvent itself to attract attention and increase revenue.

air travel (Shu, 2015). The conceptual air carrier is called Poppi and they have analyzed the
stress experienced by travelers and other industry shortcomings to focus on the needs of the
passenger while ignoring established industry practices. Would these radical ideas offered by
Poppi create a wake up call for the airline industry, and particularly legacy carriers? Professor
Taneja explains that most airlines acknowledge the importance of disruptive innovation, however,
their degree of reaction varies greatly from one carrier to another (Accenture, 2017). He also notes
the industry is divided in their reaction to disruption with some continuing business as usual and
others completely overhauling how they do business altogether. Strategies for transformation in
dealing with each carrier s workforce, processes, and legacy systems requires the right mindset and
leveraging emerging technologies. Poppi attempts to addresses these issues while focusing on what
bothers air travelers most and changing the mindsets of major carriers to envision the future of air
travel. Wilson (2015) reports Devin Liddell, Teague s principle brand strategist, would eliminate
carry on luggage and reduce the size of overhead bins to only accommodate personal items such as
computer bags and jackets. Teague conducted boarding simulations

objects necessary for existence. However, when people decide to use them as a business and make

This defense lessened the sentence of 19 year old Troy Gentzler, who admitted throwing rocks

prejudice induced insanity. Lawyers for Colin Ferguson, the black man who killed five white

Should Sports Gambling Be Legalized?
Gambling is a common practice throughout human history, one that appeals to the individual s
desire for gain and offers the thrill of risk or uncertainty. Sports gambling is the wagering of
money or other items of value on the outcome of a sporting event, dependent either wholly or in
part on chance (Thompson, 2008, p. 1). Sports gambling generates billions of dollars annually,
with large events like the Super Bowl or World Series alone able to generate wagers in the
billions of dollars. This research will explore the arguments of those who oppose sports gambling
and those who support it in order to answer the question: Should sports gambling be legalized?

According to Thompson (2008), as of 2008 there were over 150 racetracks operating in the U.S.,
with annual wagers on horse racing totaling more than $16 billion. Dog racing is also legal in a
number of states, but it is not as popular or widespread as horse racing. Proponents of sports
gambling maintain betting on such events generates lucrative revenues, provides thousands of
jobs, and offers sports bettors a means of entertainment and a chance for gain. Despite these
arguments, there are a number of sound arguments put forth by those who remain staunchly
opposed to legalizing sports gambling in the U.S. One of the biggest reasons opponents of
sports gambling are opposed to wagering on sporting events is because of the potential for
sports gambling to result in fixed sporting events and ultimately undermining the integrity of
professional and amateur sports in the U.S. As Thompson (2008) explains, sports gambling
remains illegal and heavily regulated by the government because of the potential for events to be
fixed, or illegally influenced (using bribes or other forms of compensation) (p. 2). It is not that
difficult to see how this might happen, since numerous sports gambling scandals have occurred
in the past. The 1919 World Series was fixed by Chicago White Sox players. Pete Rose was

to gambling on sporting events while he

Faust And Religion
I will argue that Goethe uses spirituality to fill the void created by science. This is significant
because the reversal between science and spirituality is a direct contrast to the idea of
Gotterdammerung. Instead of writing about the death of the gods and religion, Goethe uses Faust
to promote spirituality as superior to science.
At the beginning of the play, Faust is portrayed as a well educated individual. However, even after
studying a variety of topics, Faust finds himself no wiser than when [he] began (359). In addition,
he realizes that a life of academia is not fulfilling. The words and topics Faust is learning about are
meaningless to him. Faust understands that knowledge has its limits, much like when Faust and his

In contrast, the idea of Gotterdammerung claims that the Gods have reached their twilight. The
idea further goes on to explain that for us to become who we are, the Gods must have died and
passed on . However, Goethe uses Faust to overturn the idea of Gotterdammerung. Throughout the
play, Faust abandons the idea of reason to pursue his own fulfillment through spirituality. For Faust,
he is experiencing a metaphorical death through his continued studies. He finds that his studies and
words are meaningless and there are limits to their application. However, the spirits allow Faust to
experience a new lease on life. This entire encounter is constructed through a bet between the Lord
and Mephistopheles. Even when Mephistopheles drags Faust into unfortunate situations, Faust
places his complete control in the devil. His trust in Mephistopheles represents his absolute trust in
spirituality and supernatural powers. Through his experiences with spirits, Faust experiences a wide
variety of emotions, from love to tragedy. Even in the darkest of times, Faust experiences more
fulfillment through these feelings than academia ever brought him. Goethe using Faust s
disillusionment of academia and revitalization through feelings proves to the reader that this is the

Summary Of Canon Revisited
Michale J. Kruger is professor of New Testament and academic dean at Reformed Theological
Seminary, is the author of the Gospels of the Savior, and the coauthor of Gospel Fragments and the
Hersey of Orthodoxy. His research on the Christian origins has made him a trusted authority on the
development of the New Testament canon. In Canon Revisited, Kruger looks deeper than the
traditional surveys of councils and creeds, mining the biblical text itself for direction in
understanding what the original authors and audiences believed the canon to be. While there are
many interests, critiques, and approaches to understanding the biblical canon regarding
authenticity, authority, and historicity in this text Michale Kruger takes on the problem of canon...

[1] With all these various locations, facts, perspectives, identities, and languages that compile the
Christian biblical text how can Christians know that the 27 books are the right 27 books? Again,
the question of the canon, therefore, is at the very center of how biblical authority is established.
[2] Even though the Bible has been established and authenticated for several centuries, the Christian
community continues to circulate debate on the New Testament canon. In the introduction of the
book (pp 15 24) Kruger states there are various reasons why this conversation is still happening.
First, modern critical scholarship has continued to raise doubts about the authorship and date of
numerous New Testament books, attributing them to later, pseudonymous authors. Throughout the
text many of the models date the completed canon to the fourth century. Second, the later century
and a half have been filled with sensational discoveries of apocryphal materials that have raised
new questions about which books should be included in the canon. The discoveries of apocryphal
gospels such as the Gospel of Peter, the Gospel of Thomas, the Secret gospel of Mark, and most
recently, the Gospels of Judas have raised questions about the state of

Analysis Of Kim And Mauborgne And Their Blue Ocean Strategy
Introduction:
In the early 21st century, the economic and social context became difficult; it is partly due to the
economic crisis but also by the low consumption. Many companies are struggling to find their place
or event to remain sustainable. Faced to this global economic uncertainty and increased taxes that
effect revenues, the customers; me and you, prefer to save rather than consume. Furthermore, the
household income allocated to consumption continues to decline. In addition to that, this situation
makes the consumers more volatile, looking just for the low cost or even a good planВ».
Meanwhile, companies are also struggling to maintain the growth. So then they try to drastically
cut costs or suggest different offers without an added value.
Based on this general assumption, the conventional models including porter s strategic management
seem to have had their day. However, other theories have been created to try to change and renew
the components of market. This is the case of Kim and Mauborgne and their blue ocean strategy
which represented a revolution in the competitive market. This strategic paradigm is presented as a
revolution! Its implementation will lead the company adapted to success by creating new demand
and avoiding competition. This strategy seems to be similar to a dream, do not worry! The dream
is overtaken by reality.
This report is a critical review of Blue Ocean strategy. It examines and explains both the blue ocean
and porter s model as a

Hinduism Sociology
https://www.paperrater.com/free_paper_grader#The Hindu Community
Hinduism is described as a major religious and cultural tradition of South Asia, developed from
Vedic religion. One of the oldest religions in the world, Hinduism is most diverse, originating from
multiple religions. The religion is polytheistic, meaning the people of Hinduism believe in millions
of gods who control different aspects of their life. Prior to visiting the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan
mandir, I had minimal information on Hindu s and their way of life, despite having countless
Hindu friends. Going in as an anthropologist, I objectively observed the customs and traditions they
followed in an attempt to learn more about their community.

I spent all day at the temple and talked to many people. I knew Diwali was a festival of lights but
I managed to learn a lot more about it while I was there from a multitude of people of all ages.
They told me Diwali celebrates the return of Rama and Sita, in the story from the Ramayana,
which are considered different gods to them. The story of Rama and Sita shows how good wins
over evil. The significance of the celebration is to call awareness to this goddess who symbolizes
prosperity. For Hindu s, light is a representation for prosperity while the dark signifies ignorance.
All of India celebrates this festival, however most call it by its Sanskrit name, Deepavali. Since
India is so large, they follow separate calendars, which causes the North and South to celebrate
the religious festival at different times of the year. Usually it is celebrated on a day called
Amavasya, which is a new moon. The sky is dark and therefore the lighting is more noticeable;
prosperity is shown more heavily. The northern part of India celebrates it as a holiday for the new
year while the South continues to keep it more traditional by having the festival on the day when
their god, Krishna, conquered the King who had imprisoned thousands of

Examples Of Calypso In The Odyssey
Calypso, a nymph in Greek Mythology, is first found holding the warrior Odysseus captive from
his journey home after the Trojan War. Her love for him is so strong that she cannot let him go.
Homer introduces Calypso as a beautiful goddess sitting on a tropical island while playing her lyre.
Continuing with the stereotypical goddess nature, Homer also reveals how strong emotions can
cause goddesses to act irrationally. Meanwhile, he also shows how their beauty plays and important
part in their personality and how people treat them. In the epic poem, The Odyssey, Homer depicts
the character Calypso with opposing characteristics to uphold the recurring contradicting goddess
personality; he shows her as lustrous yet manipulative. Beauty is an... Show more content on

However, it is not out of her own heart. Zeus, the highest god, threatens her. Strangely enough, she
warns Odysseus because she knows the conflicts he will face when he leaves. But I will gladly
advise him I ll hide nothing so he can reach his native country unarmed (Homer 157). She also
tells him that he could be immortal with her on the island with her or have a deadly journey
home. She attempts to use his future encounters to her advantage. Unfortunately, based on past
encounters Odysseus doesn t trust Calypso shown in the following quote: I ll send him off, but
not with an escort. I have no ships in reach, no crew to ply the oars and send him shuddering
over the sea s broad back (Homer 156). She held Odysseus captive against his will. When forced
to release him, he gives him only the best for his journey home. Odysseus then becomes even
more hesitant because Calypso does more than enough to help him on his journey. Calypso uses a
type of reverse psychology to try and prevent Odysseus from leaving. Ultimately, her attempt fails
and Odysseus leaves the island. Not only in the epic poem The Odyssey but in Greek mythology
goddesses have a reputation for emotional distress. They rank each other based on physical
attributes and how beautiful they are. The following standard is shown consistently throughout the
Odyssey; Calypso is an example. Homer illustrates Calypso with opposing characteristics to

Mystery Of Iniquity Poem Analysis

Mystery of Iniquity
The first line in the poem is a phrase that is found in Bible: 2 Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of
iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. Which
means the lawlessness, discrimination, and immoral is already working. Lauryn Hill is rightly
regarded as one of the most exciting and original talents of her generation. As singer, songwriter
and rapper, she first came to prominence as a member of the hip hop trio the Fugees, before
launching a short lived but impactful solo career. She is also regarded as one of music s lost
geniuses, avoiding the limelight and the studio to raise her five children with Rohan Marley, son
of reggae legend Bob. Right now, with a life that has involved no shows at concerts and a prison
sentence, it doesn t look like she ll be adding to her five Grammy awards (The Biography.com
website, 2017). The poem speaks about how messed up and crooked the court system are towards
African Americans.
Inequity is lack of fairness or justice. The history of inequity is something people is running after
but will never be able to catch. Lauryn Hill describes it as The American Dream and how it is
creating an illusion around the U.S. The illusion is making people obsessed with success and
allowing the government control them. This paper will focus on the injustice of African
Americans. Lauryn Hill have great songs that inspire many music artists. In the Mystery of Iniquity
Lauryn Hill talks about the history of inequity which is exclusionary, discrimination, and immoral
behavior.
Mystery of Iniquity is one of the powerful poems ever written by Lauryn Hill because she speaks
on exclusionary. Exclusionary is relating to or characterized by the exclusion of something,
especially from a contract or group. When Lauryn Hill talks about the expert witness (the paid
authority) the expert witness gets on the stand and tells the jury what they want to hear. The jury
doesn t even bother to question some of the shaky points. They just want to go home and mostly
likely didn t want to be there in the first place (Genius, 2017). The witness is feeding the jury a story

The Short Story Everyday Uses By Alice Walker
In the short story, Everyday Uses by Alice Walker, is about two daughters, one spoiled and one
thankful. The eldest daughter changes herself from her family, and thinks possessions matter
most. She s very outgoing and doesn t care about anyone but herself, and shows in the story how
this new man changed her. The younger and other sister, Maggie is more caring, as she is
willing to give up something just because her sister wanted it. She doesn t change and doesn t let
people change her like her older sister. I think this story shows how people are affected by their
surroundings. Some people want things but don t appreciate it until someone else does. This story
may help people realize how people take things for granted, or just want

Interpersonal Communications During The Movie Steel Magnolias
Interpersonal Communication is a very important ingredient in making strong, healthy
relationships. Communicating is how we get a better understanding of one another s perception of
things, as well as how we help someone to better understand ours. We need to express our feelings
in relationships and know that they are reciprocated. Not communicating leads to problems and
misunderstandings. People need to learn to understand what the other person is trying to
communicate. Interpersonal communication is the process by which people exchange information,
feelings, and meaning through verbal and non verbal messages: it is face to face communication. It
is about what is said, how it is said, and the use of non verbal communication through... Show more

Perception is the process of seeing the world through your own eyes by utilizing your own
personal experiences to guide your judgement of what other people are. (Steven A. Beebe, 2011,

daughter, employer and employee, or a completely opposite set of best friends. These six women
provide acceptance and support to one another throughout their experiences and tragedies.
Despite their differences in age, values and beliefs, they form a close family with unbreakable
bonds. Regardless of the circumstances, life goes on, as long as we have a family and friends,
and a strong communication system, we can push through anything. Steel Magnolias is a movie
about relationships between six women that form an unbreakable bond. The movie takes place
in Louisiana in the 1980s. (Ross, 1989) The majority of the movie takes place at the beauty
salon owned by Truvy. Truvy has a happy go lucky personality and is always very enthusiastic.
She always sees the good in every situation. She has a husband that spends most of the time on
the couch and a son who has grown up to be a rebel. Truvy loves making everybody feel good

Catch 22 Character Analysis
Catch 22, published in 1955 by Joseph Heller, follows the antics of Yossarian, a World War II
bombardier, as he tries to avoid flying particularly dangerous combat missions on the Italian
island of Pianosa. He and his squadron, the 256th Squadron, constantly try to avoid combat
missions by sabotaging the plans of the missions with a myriad of rather jocular attempts to do
so. These attempts range from simply moving a string over a target so that the squadron does not
have to fly over that specific target to Yossarian poisoning the entire squadron s food with soap so
that they all were too sick to fly. The main conflict of the novelis not a person: it is an ideal. The
ideal of the Catch 22is the driving force behind the antics of the 256th Squadron, Yossarian in
particular. The catch in the case of the flying squadron is a real Air Force rule: a pilot who
continuously flies combat missions without asking for relief is insane, but is considered sane
enough to keep flying if he does ask for relief. Yossarian continuously asks for relief, which for
the generals and majors label him as sane , but his is not close to being sane whatsoever. Since
the harrowing death of Snowden, a gunner in one of Yossarian s planes, Yossarian has been
dealing with the trauma in multiple ways. From being in the nude for parts of the novel, for
Snowden s blood soaked his uniform and he vowed to never wear a uniform again, to becoming
increasingly paranoid about the fact that he thinks that

The Song Analysis Of We Are The World
In 1984, an iconic song was created by two sensational artists Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.
A song they created inspired millions, originally created for people of Africa during the time of a
horrific famine, was later recreated for the earthquake of Haiti. And for many years our world has
been through so much trauma, trauma such as diseases, shootings, and devastating natural
disasters. That song we know as We Are The World
created such an inspiring notion that sparks to
change our perspective of the world, how it is ours the children like Jackson said We are the
world, we are the children meaning we are all connected and the lyrics of this song represents that.
When I listen to this song it gives a sense of hope, hope that everything will be alright. The songs
sends out a powerful message that anyone and everyone can help and make a difference in the
world. The style of this song is so powerful it s an eclectic style of many incredible genres such
as; gospel, rock, hip hop, R B etc. many of the famous artists of this song were called the United
Support Of Artists for Africa, despite their musical differences came together and created a moving
and inspirational meaningful song. That touched millions around the world, even today it s still an
iconic song to plenty such as myself connected to the world through those powerful lyrics, when
Jackson wrote,

Human Intelligence Can Be Increased Due At Exercise
The beginning and an end. The start and the finish. Once something begins, it will eventually come
to an end. But, that true, does everything in the universe actually end? Numbers; a start with no
finish. Numbers, something so simple, yet so complex. An infinite creation of the human mind
subdued by our unmeasurable human intelligence. This is all capable due to the human brain. The
brain is the most complex and unique organ in the human body. Some even considerable it a
muscle. Similar to muscles, your brain can be trained and worked for better functionality. But, did
you that there s a direct connection between exercising and increased intelligence in humans? In
this paper I will be backing up my statement that human intelligence can be increased due to
exercise. I will also give a view on the opposite side, using research that hypothetically disproves
the idea that human intelligence can be gained through exercise. Then, I will be evaluating my
claim, backing up my point by applying reason, utilizing the four tests of an argument and taking
advantage of my critical thinking skills to validate my claim. Lastly, I will be concluding and
synthesizing my argument. According to a couple studies exercise and intelligence have no
connection. Some even suggest that exercise has negative effects on human intelligence. The first
study was done by Kaycee M. Sink, M.D., M.A.S., of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and her
colleagues, evaluated whether a 24 month physical activity

Both approaches focus on subjectivity and the inner world of the experiences in live, however
psychodynamics are focused on the impact of the unconscious mind on meanings, motivations,
behaviours and conscious experiences. They refer to inner conflicts (especially between the
different aspects of the psyche id, ego and superego) and the defensive processes used
unconsciously to defend against the anxiety these conflicts creates, including repression,
sublimation, projection and reaction formation. The aim of psychoanalytic psychotherapy is to
release repressed unconscious material by bringing it into consciousness. The person centred
approach primary focus on the significance of a person s conscious feelings and thoughts while
not entirely rejecting the relevance of unconscious feelings. Thus Rogers says that each person
lives essentially in her own particular and subjective world. . While he accepts that a person will
not be conscious of all aspects of her subjective world he believes that the person s awareness of
herself is the most important source of knowledge about her. The aim of person centred counselling
is to help clients restore their ability to become aware of what they really feel. For this the therapist

Essay about The Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance Poets consist of: James Weldon Johnson, Countee Cullen, Claude McKay,
Jean (Eugene) Toomer, Langston Hughes, Sterling Brown, Robert Hayden, and Gwendolyn
Brooks. These eight poets contributed to modern day poetry in three ways. One: they all wrote
marvelous poems that inspired our poets of modern times. Two: they contributed to literature to let
us know what went on in there times, and how much we now have changed. And last but not least
they all have written poems that people can sit down and relate to and what people are writing
about and take time out to let the people of their families know that they were living in those times.

on around them, or sit down and keep their feelings inside of them. So then gave us as children the
opportunity to so what was going on in the early 1900 s, and an easier way to remember what was

Blacks. Being spit on, called names, going to jail for crimes that they didn t commit, and all kind
of bad accusations all done because of the simple fact that they were all Black. These poets brought
that to others attention so that they would realize what was going on in not so many words, and in
a rhythm.
Until the early 1900 s the world never realized the talents of African Americans until they gave them
the chance to prove themselves. Whether they proved themselves by writing poetry, music,
dramatizations, or art. They started new lives in Harlem, New York. They started a life without
crime where the people could have fun, and hang out.
Most of these poets went to college at either Harvard or Fisk University. James Weldon Johnson
was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1871. He died in 1938. During his 67 year life, he made
several different religious poems such as God s Trombone, and The Creation. Countee Cullen spent
43 years of his life in New York City. During his life period he also wrote several types of poetry

How Police Officers Are Affected By Loud Noise From The Gun
How Police officers are affected by loud impulsive Noise from the Gun
Introduction
Noise is one of the most widespread causes of hearing loss, and the most likely causes of
occupational illnesses in the United States (Leigh 728). Acute or prolonged exposure to high
level, impulsive noise is an ongoing problem for the military and defense forces all over the world
(Sliwinska Kowalska and Adrian Davis 274). One shot from a big caliber firearm, perceived at a
close range, may permanently or temporarily damage an individual hearing in an instant.
Additionally, repeated exposures to noisy machinery may, over an extensive period of time,
impose serious risks to human hearing. According to the report released by National Institute on
Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD); ten million Americans have already
suffered permanent hearing damage from noise and thirty to fifty million individuals are exposed
to hazardous noise levels every day (Leigh 728). Many hearing illness in the police service
originate from the noise caused by gunshots. As a result of increased cased of hearing problem,
mainly in the police service, many scholars have engaged in research in order to get appropriate
mean to control these problem. Considering the increasing investigation from military groups for
vital information on how to protect from impulse noise, it is vital to explore health effects

Personal Narrative-Lasting Life In High School
It was definitely past the dormitory s lights out, but there I was, walking across the hallway into

Our first midterms came out today! Isn t it strange how Exeter puts them on an eleven point scale

problem of e books is that it is killing libraries. As Brodsky notes:
Imagine walking into a library or bookstore and needing three or four pairs of different glasses to
read different books manufactured to specific viewing equipment. Or buying a book and then having

By this, he is referring to the fact that Amazon, Google and so on, have their e book stores where

  • 2. Funds Of Knowledge As educators, we spend a great amount of time looking for different ways to implementing curriculum, meeting school and district deadlines, assessing, planning, and grading. But do we ever take time to really get to know our students and their families in a personal level? Without event knowing, we hold different biases towards students and their parents; we expect them to have certain knowledge about their community and culture depending on their demographics and socioeconomic status. We completely ignore the fact that many parents can make positive contributions to our classrooms. In the book Funds of Knowledge edited by Norma Gonzalez, Luis C. Moll, and Cathy Amanti, we can see how many families have abundant knowledge that the schools/teachers do not know about and therefore do not use in order to teach academic skills. I agree with the authors, It is precisely through information of these kinds of social activities that we identify funds of knowledge that can be used in the classroom to help improve academic development (Gonzalez, Moll Amanti, 2005, Pg. 80). We start teaching at the beginning of the school year holding biases towards certain students. Sometimes we heard in the office or teacher lounge that student XYZ is a nightmare , we are scared of those students because we are afraid they will ruin our classroom environment. This was my mentality when I first stepped into a classroom as a tutor. I worked for the CA Mini Corps program tutoring migrant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Berkeley Admissions Essay The election night of 2000 was a pivotal moment in my life. I stayed up all night on November 7th, 2000, not because I was enthralled with watching Florida flip flop between Gore and Bush, but because I had an IV in my arm which made it impossible to be comfortable. Earlier that evening, I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes, a disease affecting 1 of 800 people in America. This was an especially crucial time in my life, considering I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis an autoimmune disease that attacks the GI track in 1 of 1400 Americans the June before, and I had my Bar Mitzvah in September. According to the Jewish religion, I had become an adult, and as such, I had decided to greet my new medical challenges with gusto, attempting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I found the latter to be the most satisfying, as many kids, especially the older ones, were curious about the effects, but hesitant to ask an adult about the repercussions. The most challenging thing to me was the number of parents who seemed to simply give up. I saw a large amount of inaction; which in the case of diabetes is simply unacceptable. I enjoyed educating and motivating these kids to make beneficial lifestyle changes, so that good health rather than disease can help to define their futures, as well as my own. While I started my volunteer educational program, another man was well ensconced in his own. Al Gore took up a cause that many people seemed to be ignoring, our environment. The issues of climate change and general environmentalism are very important to me. I see similarities between the challenges of managing a clean environment for our globe and the challenges of managing good health to me. Through concerted efforts to make routine changes we have the capacity to live more ecologically friendly, and often healthier lives. I have seen that with just a few adjustments, I can control my diabetes to the point where most people do not even know I have it. Likewise, I believe that if we commit to making fundamental changes in the way we go about our lives, we can easily remedy several environmental issues we face today. By going to Berkeley Law School and focusing on Environmental Law, I can apply my own life s lessons ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. money and class in america Essay example In the book Money and Class in America written by Lewis Lapham, the way Americans look at money is exposed. It compares other nations view on monetary value against that of the Americans. It is a fact that we place more value on money than anything else. This book illustrates the corruptness of the American Dream as it focuses money as the currency of the soul and through the dream, men remain free to rise or fall. Their life is the product of the effort and the decisions put forth by them. To start off, money in the U.S. is perceived as the currency of the soul. It makes the world go round. Lapham writes, They had been so deflected by the pursuit of money that they could turn in no other direction. . In my opinion, Americans... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He quit smoking and chewing tobacco just to save up those extra few dollars. Although he was in illegal activities, such as selling alcohol which in that time was illegal, he was a thug . He made sure that no matter what he was doing, he accomplished his goal of having money. In the original dream, all the hard work you had to put forth to achieve your goal was like a lesson learned. However, in our century s corrupted dream, all the struggles are worth it as long as you make it to the riches and the high standards of life. The whole act itself revolves completely out of money. It is more important to showcase items and mount them on walls then to show intelligence, faith and families. It is sad to say, but in our American Dream, the corrupted one that is, greenbacks are worth more than one s honor. Other nations look upon the American devotion as sterile cupidity and insanity. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby, Daisy and Tom are an excellent example of the importance of being wealthy. Lapham expresses his opinion on Americans as Philistinism. Americans base their success on property and luxuries. Without that, they are not truly happy or satisfied with what they did in their life period. If the goal of becoming rich is achieved, everything might not be so great after all. The circle of people associated with you are just there for the luxury. Take the Gatsby as an example. No one went to his funeral, not even Daisy. She was to blame for his death, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Origins Of The And Riel Rebellion The MГ©tis/ Riel rebellion is one that echoes in Canadian history. It is the cause for much distress on both the rebel and the side of the government of Canada. This tail includes different rebellions which intertwine together; the Red River Rebellion, and the North West Rebellion. The Red River rebellion itself dates back to 1869 and ended in 1870, while the North West Rebellion occurred in 1885; which was a quick and deadly revolution (New, 2002:826). The lead up to these historic event date back much earlier than 1869. Multiple events collided together resulting with the people in what is known today as Manitoba, coming together and revolting against the Canadian Government. The settlers had come to the West to enter the fur trade, and began to create families with their Native American wives. A MГ©tis is an individual who is made up by a having both Native, and a European blood in their ancestry line (Asch, 1984:5). The MГ©tis are the people that primarily made up the Red River Colony, along with the French Catholic citizens that immigrated over. By the 1950 s the Hudson Bay Company; HBC, has started to endure many attempts from Canada, the United States, and Britain to take over its land; resulting in Canada becoming the victor by buying Rupert s Land three years after confederation. The final sale price was $1.5 million which made up the largest real estate transition by land area in Canada s history. (Bumsted, 06) It is at this time that chaos begins to ensue across Rupert s Land and with those that dwell within its borders. Protestants begin to flood the land, each bringing their culture and heritage with them. With each new member immigrating to the newly brought land, the fears its original habitant s loss of heritage grew. Land that was once owned by the francophone, MГ©tis and aboriginal settlers slowly became tainted by their new Protestant neighbours. The neither British crown nor Canadian government made any attempt to put their mind at ease, and help them with their fear of losing everything they hold dear; instead they chose to act as if Rupert s land had no previous inhabitants. • 6. Essay on American Women Leaving the Home and Going to Work One of the most significant sociological changes in the nation s history began in the last decade of the nineteenth century and the ramifications are still being felt today. This change consisted of the large numbers of women who entered the work force. This dramatic change in American society was accompanied by a great deal of controversy and prejudice directed towards women. It was predicted that femaleemployment would bring about the downfall of society and the change of the American family. While a large portion of the public was appalled by the thought of independent young working women, they were also fascinated. Therefore, the attitudes of the public toward these women can be seen in the literature that was produced at that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, the prejudice against female workers essentially allowed their employers at the various factories to blame the women themselves for their low wages. The standard argument was that these women did not need to work. Part of this concept was that these women were supported by fathers, brothers, etc. and only wanted the jobs so they would have money for nice clothes and extras . Despite numerous government statistics that demonstrated financial need by many female workers, the prevailing attitude was that women brought their low earnings on themselves (Kessler Harris 100). This, of course, totally ignored the government statistics that pertained to immigrant families and minorities, where family finances were the prime motivating factor towards women joining the work force (Kessler Harris 123). Additionally, the census figures that showed immigrant wives as not working failed to take into consideration that these women were usually employed as their husband s assistants (Anonymous 25; Kessler Harris 124). Those knowledgeable about working conditions within New York s factories found the facts to be far different from this scenario. While some women lived at home, many did not. At a weekly wage of eight to ten dollars per week, these women generally paid five to six of that for their rooms (Barnum 7). Women who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT BSM 160: PERSONAL AND RESEARCH SKILLS (FULL TIME) MOIRA BAILEY 1415792 CINDY OMARI WORD COUNT: 1,051 This reflective paper aims at analyzing my learning experience in the Personal and Research Skills module and how these experiences are likely to help both my post graduate study at The Robert Gordon University and my future career. During my post graduate studies at The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Personal and Research Skills was one of the four modules I took in the first semester. This module invoked a mixed feeling of anxiety and eagerness to learn more about effective learning skills, critical thinking and problem solving. I had many thoughts going ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When students reflect upon their learning, they engage in a potentially transformative act of responding to, connecting with, and analyzing an experience, event, process, or product. Reflection is thus one way to bridge the separate thought and action: an opportunity for students to describe their internal processes, evaluate their challenges, and recognize their triumphs in ways that would otherwise remain unarticulated (Allan Driscoll 2014). Being a reflective learner would therefore help me be more proactive in applying my existing knowledge to create new ideas and improve my understanding of course material. Reflective learning would also have a positive impact on my future career since I would be able to develop my learning and thinking abilities by building on the critical evaluation of my past learning experiences and applying them to my work. I believe this would make me self aware and give me the ability to identify and address my strengths and weaknesses. I therefore agree with the argument by (Moon, 2002) that reflection improves the depth and relevance of individual learning (Moon, 2000 cited by Trehan, 2008). If I had no knowledge of effective learning skills, I would have been stressed out whenever I come across an academic, social or professional challenge which would have had a negative impact on my performance in the long run. • 8. Double Indemnity Summary In Part II: The Private Investigator of The Longman Anthology of Detective Fiction it says, The original world of the hard boiled detective was clearly a male one, where women were suspect and dangerous. (as cited in Mansfield Kelley and Marchino, 2005, p.207). In the cases of Double Indemnity, directed by Billy Wilder, and The Gutting of Couffignal, wrote by Dashiell Hammett , this is exactly the case. Both are, in the case of Double Indemnity based off of, hard boiled detective stories in which the women are cunning, manipulative, and dangerous. The women are strategically oriented, have little regard to others, and are selfish. They also blindly rely on the feelings and actions of others. Indirectly, she relied on Keyes to not figure out that she was involved or that a murder even took place. In The Gutting of Couffignal, the princess relied on the investigator and (not so blindly) her people. She had to trust that the investigator wouldn t figure out her plan and would follow along with it as well. She had to trust that her people would do as they were instructed. Under the cool shade of the arching canopy, the stillness and stifling silence imparts a feeling of serenity: even its name alludes to this, meaning place of grave meditation in the Zulu language. Despite this apparent lifelessness, it is considered one of the greatest examples of unique biodiversity in all of southern Africa. Within the towering trees, under crackling leaf beds and between the broken boulders live hundreds of species of animal, including rare and endangered birds, insects and reptiles. He bends down and snatches his crumpled white shirt and his dirty grey trousers with the worn out knees. He pulls them on and brushes the most visible grime off his front. There is a slightly misshapen ochre jug sitting by the door, filled with water the colour of river mud. His mother must have drawn it from the well before heading out to her first job. He washes his face with the brackish water, not certain if all he is doing is spreading the dirt around more evenly. Eventually satisfied, he makes his way into the other room of the house, in search of breakfast. A hopeful investigation of the cupboards reveals nothing but stale air. Sibusiso shrugs. • 10. Comparing Influences Comparing Influences: Faulkner and Plath In the poem Daddy by Sylvia Plath tells about a woman suffering because of the pain inflicted by her father. The story is narrated in first person point of view by the author using aggressive tone to describe the antagonist of the play in the narrator s thoughts. In relation to the poem, William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily tells a story of a woman who used to be a bright young girl, but has become a symbol of decay and a obsolete object that is a part of history. The story is told from a third person point of view and talks about the grievances Miss Emily had to withstand from her father s death. Both the poem and the short story tell of a woman who had a fatherly figure that acted as an antagonist throughout the story, but both women were influenced in a different way. Though Daddy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the poem Daddy , the narrator quotes that her father was a Nazi Fascist who would mistreat Jews the same way he mistreated her. The evidence shown by the father indicates that the narrator was mistreated when she says The boot in the face, the brute Brute heart of a brute like you (Plath, 10). Because of her father s mistreatment, the narrator was influenced to commit suicide. In A Rose For Emily , her father has influenced Emily by not providing self sufficiency to Emily making her co dependent on her father so when she became older, she could not keep healthy relationships or have developed good communication skills which ultimately led to her insanity. It has become one the most powerful, influential, and most persuasive approach to normative ethics. The utilitarianism theory also has had a major impacts on approaches to economic, political, and social policy. The utilitarianismtheory had originally had been created by Jeremy Bentham. His version of was that aggregate pleasure after deducting suffering of all involved in any action. However, this was later revised by John Stuart Mill He has revised the concept of utility and has brought forth the Greatest Happiness Principle . First off, utilitarianism is the philosophical view about how we should evaluate a things that are involve choices that people have to make. These things that are evaluated are actions, laws, policies, character traits, and moral codes. In general, whatever is being evaluated, we are the ones that have to choose the one that will produce the best overall results. Utilitarianism is also a form of consequentialism this is because utilitarianism is based on the consequences or results of actions that are the only standard of right and wrong. Utilitarian s say that we should choose the option that has maximizes utility, i.e. that action or policy that produces the largest amount of good. In the poem Whoso List to Hunt, I Know Where is an Hind written by Sir Thomas Wyatt, in my opinion, the most appropriate meaning of the word hind is the female of the deer, esp. of the red deer (Oxford English Dictionary Online). 2. Using hind as a metaphor to a charming lady who is flirty but hard to approach is the central metaphor of this poem. In this sonnet, Sir Thomas Wyattalmost applied this metaphor throughout the entire poem. The language from line 1 to line 10 seems to focus on the activity of deer hunting: the speaker is attracted by a female deer and chases the deer from far behind, but he is exhausted and gives up as the deer flees; however, the use of she and her in these lines may be a suggestion of a metaphor. The last four lines then revealed the speech of using hind as a metaphor for lady by adding the components of diamonds , her fair neck and for Caesar s ; thus the readers could understand the real intention that hidden under the speaker s metaphor by comparing the similarity of a female deer and a fair lady: both are beautiful but wild. ... This statement quite adequately describes the relation between definitions of justice presented by Polemarchus and Thrasymachus in Book I of the Republic. Polemarchus initially asserts that justice is to give to each what is owed (Republic 331d), a definition he picked up from Simonides. Then, through the unrelenting questioning of Socrates, Polemarchus definition evolves into doing good to friends and harm to enemies (Republic 332d), but this definition proves insufficient to Socrates also. This is based on his profession as an educator, whose job it is to share knowledge with others and on his willingness to remain a contributing part of the discussion going on at the house of Polemarchus To determine which of these two definitions gives a better account of the good life it is necessary to establish what this good life is. According to Socrates in the Apology it is the greatest good for a man to discuss virtue every day ... for the unexamined life is not worth living (38d). What this statement implies is that to live a good life we must first question and ponder our own ideas of a good life and then do the same with other peoples ideas. In this sense Polemarchus s definition of justice most closely fits the good life because he allows for a common good that would result from examining the ideas of others and the sharing of information. It is located in London, England in the Wallace Collection. During the time this work was created, France was an aristocracy and The Swing portrays a glimpse of the luxurious life of the ruling class. King Louis XV ruled during a time when France was the most prosperous and powerful country in all of Europe. Through the influence of Madame de Pompadour, the arts prospered during this time. In the 18th century during King Louis reign the arts seemed to consume the thoughts of not only the artists themselves but also the King and other wealthy and influential members of society. This in turn resulted in neglect of the undertakings of the state, which had its consequences. In 1789, the bloody French Revolution took place and soon after, the fall of the monarchy. When a closed circuit is made between the anode and the cathode, the positive ions move from the anode to the cathode, and the negative ions move from the cathode to the anode. The movement of ions causes a current that can be harnessed (Battery 168). • 32. Gambling and Sports Should Sports Gambling Be Legalized? Gambling is a common practice throughout human history, one that appeals to the individual s desire for gain and offers the thrill of risk or uncertainty. Sports gambling is the wagering of money or other items of value on the outcome of a sporting event, dependent either wholly or in part on chance (Thompson, 2008, p. 1). Sports gambling generates billions of dollars annually, with large events like the Super Bowl or World Series alone able to generate wagers in the billions of dollars. This research will explore the arguments of those who oppose sports gambling and those who support it in order to answer the question: Should sports gambling be legalized? There are many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Thompson (2008), as of 2008 there were over 150 racetracks operating in the U.S., with annual wagers on horse racing totaling more than $16 billion. Dog racing is also legal in a number of states, but it is not as popular or widespread as horse racing. Proponents of sports gambling maintain betting on such events generates lucrative revenues, provides thousands of jobs, and offers sports bettors a means of entertainment and a chance for gain. Despite these arguments, there are a number of sound arguments put forth by those who remain staunchly opposed to legalizing sports gambling in the U.S. One of the biggest reasons opponents of sports gambling are opposed to wagering on sporting events is because of the potential for sports gambling to result in fixed sporting events and ultimately undermining the integrity of professional and amateur sports in the U.S. As Thompson (2008) explains, sports gambling remains illegal and heavily regulated by the government because of the potential for events to be fixed, or illegally influenced (using bribes or other forms of compensation) (p. 2). It is not that difficult to see how this might happen, since numerous sports gambling scandals have occurred in the past. The 1919 World Series was fixed by Chicago White Sox players. Pete Rose was banned from baseball and denied admittance to the Baseball Hall of Fame because of his admission to gambling on sporting events while he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is significant because the reversal between science and spirituality is a direct contrast to the idea of Gotterdammerung. Instead of writing about the death of the gods and religion, Goethe uses Faust to promote spirituality as superior to science. At the beginning of the play, Faust is portrayed as a well educated individual. However, even after studying a variety of topics, Faust finds himself no wiser than when [he] began (359). In contrast, the idea of Gotterdammerung claims that the Gods have reached their twilight. The idea further goes on to explain that for us to become who we are, the Gods must have died and passed on . However, Goethe uses Faust to overturn the idea of Gotterdammerung. Throughout the play, Faust abandons the idea of reason to pursue his own fulfillment through spirituality. For Faust, he is experiencing a metaphorical death through his continued studies. He finds that his studies and words are meaningless and there are limits to their application. However, the spirits allow Faust to experience a new lease on life. This entire encounter is constructed through a bet between the Lord and Mephistopheles. Even when Mephistopheles drags Faust into unfortunate situations, Faust places his complete control in the devil. His trust in Mephistopheles represents his absolute trust in spirituality and supernatural powers. Through his experiences with spirits, Faust experiences a wide variety of emotions, from love to tragedy. Even in the darkest of times, Faust experiences more fulfillment through these feelings than academia ever brought him. [2] Even though the Bible has been established and authenticated for several centuries, the Christian community continues to circulate debate on the New Testament canon. In the introduction of the book (pp 15 24) Kruger states there are various reasons why this conversation is still happening. First, modern critical scholarship has continued to raise doubts about the authorship and date of numerous New Testament books, attributing them to later, pseudonymous authors. Throughout the text many of the models date the completed canon to the fourth century. Second, the later century and a half have been filled with sensational discoveries of apocryphal materials that have raised new questions about which books should be included in the canon. Which means the lawlessness, discrimination, and immoral is already working. Lauryn Hill is rightly regarded as one of the most exciting and original talents of her generation. As singer, songwriter and rapper, she first came to prominence as a member of the hip hop trio the Fugees, before launching a short lived but impactful solo career. She is also regarded as one of music s lost geniuses, avoiding the limelight and the studio to raise her five children with Rohan Marley, son of reggae legend Bob. Right now, with a life that has involved no shows at concerts and a prison sentence, it doesn t look like she ll be adding to her five Grammy awards (The Biography.com website, 2017). The poem speaks about how messed up and crooked the court system are towards African Americans. Inequity is lack of fairness or justice. The history of inequity is something people is running after but will never be able to catch. Lauryn Hill describes it as The American Dream and how it is creating an illusion around the U.S. The illusion is making people obsessed with success and allowing the government control them. Catch 22 Character Analysis Catch 22, published in 1955 by Joseph Heller, follows the antics of Yossarian, a World War II bombardier, as he tries to avoid flying particularly dangerous combat missions on the Italian island of Pianosa. He and his squadron, the 256th Squadron, constantly try to avoid combat missions by sabotaging the plans of the missions with a myriad of rather jocular attempts to do so. These attempts range from simply moving a string over a target so that the squadron does not have to fly over that specific target to Yossarian poisoning the entire squadron s food with soap so that they all were too sick to fly.
