Macdonald Case Study
Macdonald for accepting campaign funds from the very man he was negotiating a contract of major
importance in the national interest effectively ending his career in a valiant effort to unify the nation.
Comparatively, the sponsorship scandal of the 90s 00s was plagued by a sovereignty movement and
financial burdens that led to less than democratic processes and outcomes. In the wake of the 1995
Quebec referendum, the federal government responded with the Sponsorship Program which
sponsored community projects and cultural events as well as advertising for national unity and
federalism, especially within Quebec. This program was also a symbolic gesture in that despite a
separatist movement looming, the rest of Canada, especially the government, are one with Quebec and
have always had a presence in their province, in tune with Macdonald s vision of a united Canada. The
separatist movement was a more significant issue than to Macdonald s dealings because as great a feat
as confederation was, it produced no radical changes to life. Unlike the separation of Quebec which
would transform 150 years of gradual economic, social and political transformation that unifies
Canada today.

Summary Of Passing By Nella Larsen
Masquerade Clare Kendry s life is nothing more than a masquerade. It is just a show where the
characters plays assigned roles. In the novel Passing by Nella Larsen, Clare, a friend of Irene Redfield,
uses her light skinned color to gain status by passing. The conclusion of Passing demonstrates Clare
Kendry s need to pay for denying and faking her identity. Throughout the novel, Clare acts as a white
woman despite her true identity is actually that of a black. She feels that it is easier to be a white and
uses white as a booster to gain status in her community. Clare expresses her belief that life is not as
hard as a white, You d be surprised, Rene, how much easier that is with white people than with us
(Larsen 25). Clare views white skin as a privilege, or more as like a ticket that gains her access to
resources, and even luxury, she might want. As Clare values social status more heavily than her
inherited identity, she abandons her race to receive a much higher status from the society despite the
stress she had for being exposed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is glad that her daughter is also light. I nearly died out of terror the whole nine months before
Margery was born for fear that she might be dark, Thank goodness, she turned out all right (36). Clare
s thoughts and action have isolated her from the black community, even Irene and Gertrude no longer
label her as part of the black society. Actually they were strangers. Strangers in their ways and means
of living. Strangers in their desire and ambitions. Strangers even in their racial consciousness.
Between them, the barrier was just high, just as broad, and just as firm as if Clare did not run that
strain of black blood (62 63). Clare has been alienated from her past and her true

Conception, Viability And Visual Explanations
Authoritative knowledge exist when there is more than one knowledge system, dominates and
devalues all others. It is simply not the knowledge of people in authority positions (Sargent Bascope,
p.232, 1996). Conception, viability and visual viewpoints described are central to the debate of the
beginning of life. Conception exemplifies authoritative knowledge in the United States. Authoritative
knowledge makes the question when does life begin more challenging to answer and has policy
implications. The three ways of defining when life begins are conception, viability and visual.
Conception utilizes scientific explanation that essentially is the beginning that forms human life. Cross
culturally this view differs. Viability is the ability for

According to the national institute on Drug Abuse, Abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is
costly to our Nation, exacting more than $740 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work
productivity and health care (NIDA. 2017, April 24). The rising of illicit drug smuggling and abuse
raised questions about legalizing all drug. Although some people think that drugs legalization is a way
to control illicit drug use, it seems that it will do more damage to our society than it will help. This
essay will help us understand all the implications regarding all drugs legalization in this country.
Drug abuse in general and illicit drug use are one of the most difficult challenges that face all states
around the world. Let us imagine a father with his kids at home who possess a gun without a safe to
secure his gun. Is this family safe? Similarly, legalizing drugs will be a permanent danger to our
society in many aspects.
Firstly, drugs legalization will result in an increased number of users of drug and substance abuse
resulting in high utilization of healthcare services. For instance, legalization of marijuana in Colorado
resulted in an increased healthcare utilization related to marijuana exposure and an exacerbation of
chronic health condition (Monte, Zane Heard. 2015. p. 241). In this example, legalization means an
increased of drug availability and therefore will be accessible

Buck V Bell Case Summary
Buck v.Bell. 274 U.S. 200. Supreme Court (1927). Rpt. in Bioethics and The Law. Ed. Janet L. Dolgin
Lois L. Shepherd. New York: Wolters Kluwer Law and Business, 2013. 254.
Written by Justice Holmes, the infamous Buck v Bell opinion, gives a summary and an analysis of
how the court reached the decision to uphold Virginia s sterilization statute. The case involved Carrie
Buck, an 18 year old women in a Virginia institution for feeble minded individuals, she was to be
sterilized after being found to be feeble minded. In addition to the summary of the case, Holmes raises
his concerns with having more feeble minded individuals and criminals parading the streets which
justifies coerced sterilization.
Justice Holmes opinion creates a picture of negative eugenics which makes this case a pinnacle in
coerced sterilization discourse. Written in 1927, this opinion is the only primary source on this list,
with the exception of the opinion by Justice Douglas concerning Skinner v Oklahoma. It is also
important to note that this opinion is the only source advocating for coerced sterilization.

Cambodia, Congo, And Jamaica
Case Study: Cambodia, Congo, and Jamaica
Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Jamaica are countries that gained
independence from European powers after World War II. Though located in different regions of the
world, and colonized by different European powers, these countries experienced social unrest and
economic challenges that remain. Key to understanding these countries is understanding their histories
and struggles, which continue to have significant impact on conditions within these countries today.
Cambodia
Cambodia s history contrasts a glorious past with recent tragedy. Located in Southeast Asia between
Thailand and Vietnam, Cambodia s history of conflict with its neighbors and European colonialism
has led to distrust and nationalism. Fear of foreign occupation or being partitioned by its neighbors
lingers in the Cambodian national psychology. Once part of French Indochina, Cambodian gained
independence in 1953 when King Sihanouk convinced France that only complete independence would
undercut the appeal of communism in Cambodia.
The Khmer Empire began approximately 800 CE when King Jayavarman II subjugated the small
warring kingdoms around Tonle Sap Lake and expanded to cover most of Thailand and Laos. Because
of established trade routes, art and culture were strongly influenced by India. Hinduism was the major
religion in addition to Buddhism, animist, and traditional religions. (Plubins 2013) The Khmer capital

Yucatan Forest Essay
When examining the studies on forests in the Yucatan Peninsula, it is crucial to understand the
importance and severity of hurricane disturbances. Forests in the Yucatan are affected differently by
many different types of forest disturbances, especially anthropogenic and natural disturbances like
hurricanes which occur frequently (Boose et. al. 2003). The Yucatan forests also have calm
topographical conditions, which provides clearer relationships between forest structure and
composition, and hurricane intensity and severity. Understanding the relative importance of hurricanes
also contextualizes the other disturbances that affect forest composition and structure. Anthropogenic
land use conversion historically disturbs the Yucatan forests; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Forest composition is commonly measured by species composition (number of species) in a given
region (Cook 2001). With forest structure, you have a wider range of variables to test the spatial
arrangement and physical characteristics of the trees in a given forest. The spatial arrangement or
density in a forest includes measurements such as basal area, which is the ratio of the area of tree
stems compared to the total area of a stand, and number of stems per hectare. Physical characteristics
of trees include diameter at breast height and canopy height (Cook 2001; McGroddy et al. 2013). This
paper analyzes information regarding how these conditions change with the varying wind speeds and
paths of different hurricanes that have passed over the Yucatan. Wind speeds are the hurricane
component that affects forest composition and structure the most significantly (McGroddy et. al.
2013). While forest composition in the Yucatan is largely unaffected by hurricanes, forest structural
components such as basal area and canopy height are significantly changed. Forests in the Yucatan
region are conditioned and resilient to hurricanes, which affect them less significantly than forest fires
and anthropogenic land use

The Brain Is The Most Important Components Of The Human Brain
The brain is the greatest, the most fascinating and the most complex organ of the human been.
According to Dr. Wolfe, the human brain weighs about three pound. Humans do not feel its weight
because it is full of fluids and it is floating. The human brain consumes ten times more oxygen of all
the humans body parts and 25% of the total energy produced by the body. It is not the largest part of
the humans body, but it is one of the most important parts. Through the years educators were like
doctors giving certain treatment to their patients without being sure what the disease was. If the first
treatment given did not work they gave another treatment and so on. Nowadays technology has help to
study how animals and humans brain works. It also has helped to discover how and where information
is manipulated within the brain during the learning process. To discover how the brain works, the
brain was divided in many parts. According to the book, the brain structures are cerebellum, brain
stem, temporal lobe, broca s area, frontal lobe, motor cortex, sensory cortex, parietal lobe, wernicke s
area, occipital lobe, hypothalamus and pituitary gland (Bohlin, Durwin, Reese Weber, 2012). The
major lobes of the brain are frontal, occipital, parental and temporal and each of them has different
functions during the learning process. Frontal lobe is responsible for higher standard thinking.

Descriptive Essay About Jazz
It was a sweltering 90 degrees on that summer day. Sheet music was strewn all over the floor. The fan
behind me whirred as I browsed the internet for new music. I was frustrated with the progress I had
made over the past couple of months in my quest to learn the art of playing jazz. This new form of
music puzzled me; after analyzing chord progression after chord progression, I felt like I hadn t
progressed since I started. My fanatical obsession with jazz started just as the school year was ending.
I had already been in my middle school s jazz ensemble for some time now, but all we played were
monotonous blues charts where my fellow bandmates and I would haphazardly attempt to improvise
over a pentatonic scale. My band director brought in her vinyl copy of Miles Davis landmark 1959
album, Kind of Blue as part of our weekly listening test. It transformed my understanding of jazz.
Before then the only jazz I knew was Chuck Mangione and David Benoit tunes my mom had put on
while cooking or driving. The haunting melodies of So What and Blue in Green were a complete
divergence from what were been playing throughout the school year. What I had witnessed was not
dance music, but an image of a smokey downtown jazz bar painted by Davis himself. And while the
rest of the ensemble passed it off as old man music , I wondered, how do I sound like that? And thus
began my investigation of jazz that day. I traded in my classical Rubank Intermediate Technique for

Reality versus Illusion in Who s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? In his play, The American Dream, Edward
Albee unveils a tortured family that is symbolic of the reality beneath the illusion of the American
dream. In Who s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Albee takes a more traditional approach than the theater of
the absurd, and his language is more natural, but he returns to this theme with a vengeance. For in all
of drama there are few plays about domestic relationships that are as caustic, violent and as poisoned
with the milk of human bitterness, cynicism and pessimism as is Woolf. The story regards George and

The movie Smoke Signals is based on the series of short stories written by Sherman Alexie. Just like
any movie, there is a meaning to it. Before this movie, when I thought of the phrase Native American I

Smoke Signals, it portrays what being a Native American really means. It is not all fun and games.
The protagonist, Victor Joseph, has many hard aspects of his life, but throughout it all he grows

Eukaryotic Cells
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic
There are two basic types of cells, prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. The main difference between
eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells is that eukaryotic cells have a nucleus. The nucleus is where cells
store their DNA, which is the genetic material. The nucleus is surrounded by a membrane. Prokaryotic
cells do not have a nucleus. Instead, their DNA floats around inside the cell. Organisms with
prokaryotic cells are called prokaryotes. All prokaryotes are single celled (unicellular) organisms.
Bacteria and Archaea are the only prokaryotes. Organisms with eukaryotic cells are called eukaryotes.
Animals, plants, fungi, and protists are eukaryotes. All multicellular organisms are eukaryotes.
Eukaryotes may also be single celled.

Some eukaryotic species have just a few chromosomes, others have close to 100 or more. These
chromosomes are protected within the nucleus. In addition to a nucleus, eukaryotic cells include other
membrane bound structures called organelles. Organelles allow eukaryotic cells to be more
specialized than prokaryotic cells. Pictured below are the organelles of eukaryotic cells (Figure
below), including the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi apparatus. These will be
discussed in additional concepts.
Organelles of a eukaryotic cell
Eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus and various other special compartments surrounded by membranes,
called organelles. The nucleus is where the DNA (chromatin) is stored. Organelles give eukaryotic
cells more functions than prokaryotic cells.
Prokaryotic Cells
Prokaryotic cells (Figure below) are usually smaller and simpler than eukaryotic cells. They do not
have a nucleus or other membrane bound organelles. In prokaryotic cells, the DNA, or genetic
material, forms a single large circle that coils up on itself. The DNA is located in the main part of the

which will require invasive mechanical ventilation. Death has occurred as a result from this disease
which is why the seriousness of seeking treatment early on is momentous. Due to SARS being a
newly discovered disease in 2002 2003, treatment options, possible cures, and plans for care of this
disease were unprecedented. Oxygen therapy was normally initiated in the preliminary stages of
SARS. Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV) was reported to be found efficacious in those with respiratory

well as reduced the length of hospital stays in patients researched with SARS. Ribavirin which is a

The Advantage Of Homeschooling
Homeschooling is a type of education which children are taught at home, usually by their parents or
tutors, instead of in conventional public or private schools. While it is common in some countries,
especially America, according to the Hong Kong Education Bureau (2001), if parents stop their
children from attending school without valid reasons, they might be issued with an attendance order
requiring them to send their children back to school. However, as there were recently controversies
over the Hong Kong educational style and the work load of students, it may be time to think of
alternatives such as homeschooling. The effectiveness of homeschooling has been widely discussed.

fundamental based on the flexible teaching methods and schedules so that children s interests and

homeschooling has to be popularized in Hong Kong, supportive measurements from different parties,
such as more in depth teaching courses from museums, more precisely trained experts or tutor for

I closed my eyes in a languorous ecstasy and waited waited with beating heart (Stoker 32). Both
repulsed by and attracted to the vampires, Jonathan experiences sexual desires, and while recounting it
in his journal, he focuses on sensory images, the mouth, skin, and throat, describing the experience as
ecstasy and mirroring the images of sex scenes. The women tempt Jonathan with their sexualized
appearance, but giving into their enchantment would lead to the ultimate punishment for sin, being
brutally attacked and turned into a vampire. Moreover, the pauses and waiting periods that Jonathan
experiences expose the sexual tension prolonging the temptation and sin. Voyeurism further
compounds the sinfulness of Jonathan s interactions with the female vampires. Multiple women who
are not his wife entice him while one engages in sexual behavior with him, and the others watch and
await their opportunity (Green). A religious man and a serious person, Jonathan falls to the evils of
sexuality, lusting for the female vampire.

My Vocation, My Calling Change My Life
Vocation is the calling a person experience in regards of aspirations in their life. Vocation in an
invitation by God to pursue our love for something in particular, some people hear this calling early on
in life, while other spend many years trying to find it. This paper will explore types of God callings,
my calling and how my calling change my life. One of the first calling most people experience is the
call to work. God created people to work, he did not discriminate against men and women, in his eyes
both need to work to be able to provide for them and their families. Many people are fortunate to have
this calling, but unfortunately more people are out of jobs and this is not because God did not give
them this calling, but it is because of different circumstances they experience. Genesis 1:27 28
expresses God s calling to work God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created
them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and
multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds
of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth. This passage speaks to me because it
proves that God wants people to contribute to the community.
The second calling is to live, not only to work: people have to work, our jobs are necessary, but
sometimes we get caught up in our jobs that we forget to realize what is truly important and what
gives our life

The Growth Of Technological Equipment
Individuals around the world love the concept of innovating and creating a better world for
generations to come. Throughout history, the way of life for individuals drastically improved due to
transformative individuals. The standard of living of the people of the United States doubled in the
first half of the twentieth century... The outstanding cause... is the growth of technological equipment
(Ogburn 386). Businesses were and still are allowed to grow economically as a result of the increased
productivity mainly from the rapidly growing development in technology. Technology allows
individuals to achieve results in a shorter time period but more importantly, the internet grants the
power to share the information and to connect with others about one s efforts. Because of this, it also
expands the boundless knowledge of the possible billions of people. However, to use the given
knowledge requires an extra step and some may not know which direction to take the steps in. The
current lifestyle of many individuals requires many to figure out and use information for him or her
self, which may discourage individuals from using technology. Although some individuals do not
enjoy the idea and use of technology, the internet has positive effects on society which include: the
internet increases info availability, serves as an entertainment resource, creates jobs, allows the
government to protect the people, provides better communication, and enhances business and

We All Learn From Our Mistakes Essay
Everyone, at some point in their life, has made a mistake. Sometimes we get lucky and only falter a
little, making it through the problem relatively intact. Other times, we mess up a lot and have to fix
what was damaged over a long period of time. However, the same is true for most, if not all cases
those who make the mistake learn from it. Often times, our failures teach us valuable lessons that we
only gained because of the experience we gathered after messing up. I have personally achieved a
wealth of knowledge and experience just from all of my own little mishaps, and a few major ones.
One instance of a failure that taught me well was when I tried to find a quick solution for boiling eggs.

It s obvious that the mistake I made taught me a very useful lesson that day never try to boil eggs in

Another turbulent time that taught me through failure was when I tried to arrange a birthday party for
my sister. Everything was supposed to be arranged by me, so I went out a bought the invitation cards,
party favors, balloons, decorations, food, and a few gifts. I filled out the invitations early and put them
in a box to store them until I was ready to send them. Time flew by fast between daily life with my
kids and responsibilities, and before I knew it the day of the party was upon me. Quickly that morning
I decorated and cooked and prepared everything. As the hour of the party came and went, no one
showed up but the birthday girl, whom I had called personally. Later it occurred to me that I hadn t
sent out the invitations! That was why no one had come. I soon learned from that mistake to be more
organized and manage my time better when planning events.
Yet another example of a failure that became instructive was when I tried to tile my bathroom floor. I
simply did not want to dish out the big bucks to have a worker do my tiling, which I assumed would
be an easy job. I bought the necessary items and dove into the project with an eager do it yourself
attitude and absolutely no clue about what I was doing. I tried diligently to tackle the task, but in the

Young Goodman Brown Hypocrisy
In the late 1600s, the infamous Salem Witch Trials occurred. The Salem Witch Trials were a series of
hearings and prosecutions of those accused of witchcraft. In Young Goodman Brown, Nathaniel
Hawthorne shows that the Puritans are hypocrites by showing that members of the Puritan community
lie about their beliefs. Young Goodman Brown lives with his wife, Faith, who urges him not to travel
into the forest, but Young Goodman Brown chooses to ignore Faith s advice and continue into the
forest. In the woods, Brown meets with a strange traveler who he later realizes is the devil in disguise
and witnesses him speak to Goody Cloyse as if they are friends. Then, he observes a witch meeting in
which he is shocked to see Goody Cloyse, Faith, and other Puritans attend. The scene suddenly
changes and Brown wakes up in the forest, unsure whether his experience in the forest was a dream or

After his meeting with the strange traveler, Young Goodman Brown begins to see the hypocrisy of the
Puritan community. Almost halfway through the story, Hawthorne portrays Young Goodman Brown s
shock in the discovery that Goody Cloyse is a follower of the devil by saying, That old woman taught

(Hawthorne). Even though Puritan belief states to love your neighbor, the Puritans were very skeptical
of their neighbors. After learning that several individuals, like Goody Cloyse, are hypocrites, Brown
can no longer trust the members of the Puritan community. Puritans accused other Puritans just as
Brown accused his wife over an event that may have just been a dream and lost his religious faith, as

Charlie Parker Essay
The recording I listened to was the poem Charlie Parker performed by Jack Kerouac and Steve Allen.
This performance is accompanied by a musical rendition that relates to the poem s content, as the
poem is about musician Charlie Parker. Kerouac is performing this poem in memoriam of the
musician. Kerouac describes Charlie Parker in an affluent manner to attest to his musical reverence,
such as calling him a great musician . The sound of the poem and the meaning are greatly intertwined
with one another. The sound is musical and whimsical in nature, as the music playing compliments the
poem performance. The meaning of the poem is about the great musician Charlie Parker and a
testament to his life. So the music that accompanies this meaningful ... Show more content on

I thought that Kerouac s musical tone of voice accompanying the music playing really gave the
experience of listening to a song rather than a poetry performance. It had a nice flow to the
performance that added to the songlike feel to this performance when listening to it. I especially heard
this tone in lines, such as we blop and we plop . The use of sound imagery helps in relating the
songlike feel to poetry to the actual musician who is at the center of the poem s content and meaning.
This is not the only imagery seen in the poem, as there are multiple points in the poem. Kerouac uses
imagery as a way to immerse in the poem to give the reader mental images about Charlie Parker. This
can be seen at the beginning of the poem when Kerouac is describing Charlie Parker, such as the line
Charlie Parker looked like Buddha. Kerouac also used imagery to describe the music of Charlie Parker
as well. Kerouac describes the experience of listening to Charlie Parker play in lines such as like the
perfect cry of some wild gang at a jam session Wail! Whap! . This type of imagery gives the feeling of
being at one of the great musician s performances. This poetry performance was one full of meaning
and emotion. The music helped assist in creating this experience of emotion and meaning to the poem
s content. The imagery also stands out in this performance to help create the vision of emotion and

Voyeurism In Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window
Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window (1954), is a psychological thriller that addresses themes of
voyeurism as well as morality and ethics. The film is centered around L.B. Jeffries, an action
photographer who is wheelchair bound following an accident that has left him with a broken leg.
Stuck within the confides of his apartment, he finds pleasure observing the lives of his neighbors
through his rear window. Things change for Jeffries when he believes that he has witnessed the
murder of one of his neighbours. This essay analyzes the concluding fifteen minutes of the film, in
which many of the films overarching questions are answered. Alfred Hitchcock uses the characters in
Rear Window to control the emotions of the audience, he does this by projecting the emotions of
characters onto the viewers. This raises questions of the morality and consequences of voyeurism, as
well as questions of human curiosity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Cheating and Plagiarism
The Plague of Plagiarism
Simply defined, the word plagiarism means the unauthorized use of the language and thoughts of
another author and the representation of them as one s own ( Plagiarism ). While many students
understand and comprehend the first clause of this definition, many encounter problems with the
second part the thoughts part. Many students in today s educational system are frequently unable to
develop their own thoughts, opinions, and ideas relating to the subject matter that they are studying.

. . followed by parental pressure (Clayton 187). The solution to this problem lies within the framework
for education laid by John Henry Newman. Newman states that students at a university should and
will learn to respect others as well as develop a clear atmosphere of thought (48). This will then lead
them to be able to think more independently and therefore rely more on their own intellectual skills
than those of others. If and when the ideals of John Henry Newman are followed rather closely, the
ability of all students to reason autonomously will increase dramatically and, thereby, decrease the
amount of cheating.
Since the ultimate purpose of a university is to prepare people to be good citizens in society (Newman
48), and according to Jeffrey Hart, students in a university should become citizens after they complete
college (131), if cheating is minimized at university level, it will also reduce in the society. In this
context, citizens should be wholesome people who are able to give back to society, the honesty they
have learned in the university; once they are a part of it. The university, also, has an aim of purifying
the national taste and raising the intellectual tone of society as a whole (Newman 49). Cheating and
plagiarism are not a part of this noble aim, neither of them improves any part of society. On the
contrary, they are a boar on society, a plague that must

Analysis Of The Estrangement By Jamaica Kincaid, My Speech...
One s judgement of others is a commonality amongst all people; however, to admit one is wrong about
one s perceptions is infrequent. In both essays, The Estrangement by Jamaica Kincaid, and My Speech
at West Point by Marjane Satrapi in the book The Writer s Presence, the writers make comment on
their life experiences particularly about their bad judgment of others and the impact that has had on
them. Kincaid s essay is about the rough relationship she had with her mother and how her criticism of
her changed after her experience as a mother. Similarly, Satrapi writes about the point in her life she

Nevertheless, she accepts her mistake and learns from her experience by acknowledging it, I don t

her country, but in her thinking as well. This brings to light how the only way to diminish social
issues, our opinions need to be altered.
Likewise, Kincaid wrongly judges her mother. In her essay, The Estrangement she tells that she
stopped talking to her mother after she spoke unkindly about her in a conversation they had through
the phone. She describes her mother as a person that was seen as nice by others, but not by her nor her
younger siblings. She asserts that her mother, said horrible things to us more often than not and that
the nice person everyone saw in her was not at all known to us (Kincaid 170). In other words, her
mother was unaffectionate to them. A statement she makes evident when she tells about the time his
step father was buried next to her mother and her uncertainty of whether he would have liked that
based on her and her siblings preferences. She claims, we would rather be dead than spend eternity
lying next to her (Kincaid 170). In other terms, they despised her mother for the treatment she gave
them. However, later in the text, there is a shift in tone: from hate to acknowledgement and love. Her
perception of her mother changes after she realizes how

Negative Effects of Run down Buildings on the Community All across the US, cities are constantly
evolving by tearing down outdated buildings and erecting new structures in their places that serve to
grow and improve the community as a whole. However, when a city either does not have the funds or
the communal support to tear down a run down building, this evolutionary process is halted. In nature,
organisms must adapt to keep up with their ever changing environments. This same concept goes for
communities that wish to keep up with the increased modernization we are seeing across the country.

Of those buildings, 83 percent showed signs of illegal use by prostitutes, drug dealers, property

astounding amount of crime all stems from run down buildings providing a safe haven for criminals to
operate. In Spelman s study, he concluded that securing abandoned buildings is a highly cost effective
crime control tactic for communities plagued with lawful misconduct (Spelman). Finally, run down
buildings lower property values of homes and structures around them. In a study conducted in 2001 on
property values around vacated buildings in Philadelphia, it was found that homes within 150 feet of
abandoned property suffered a net value loss of $7,630 (Bass). This negative impact that run down

  • 2. Macdonald Case Study Macdonald for accepting campaign funds from the very man he was negotiating a contract of major importance in the national interest effectively ending his career in a valiant effort to unify the nation. Comparatively, the sponsorship scandal of the 90s 00s was plagued by a sovereignty movement and financial burdens that led to less than democratic processes and outcomes. In the wake of the 1995 Quebec referendum, the federal government responded with the Sponsorship Program which sponsored community projects and cultural events as well as advertising for national unity and federalism, especially within Quebec. This program was also a symbolic gesture in that despite a separatist movement looming, the rest of Canada, especially the government, are one with Quebec and have always had a presence in their province, in tune with Macdonald s vision of a united Canada. The separatist movement was a more significant issue than to Macdonald s dealings because as great a feat as confederation was, it produced no radical changes to life. Unlike the separation of Quebec which would transform 150 years of gradual economic, social and political transformation that unifies Canada today. • 3. Summary Of Passing By Nella Larsen Masquerade Clare Kendry s life is nothing more than a masquerade. It is just a show where the characters plays assigned roles. In the novel Passing by Nella Larsen, Clare, a friend of Irene Redfield, uses her light skinned color to gain status by passing. The conclusion of Passing demonstrates Clare Kendry s need to pay for denying and faking her identity. Throughout the novel, Clare acts as a white woman despite her true identity is actually that of a black. She feels that it is easier to be a white and uses white as a booster to gain status in her community. Clare expresses her belief that life is not as hard as a white, You d be surprised, Rene, how much easier that is with white people than with us (Larsen 25). Clare views white skin as a privilege, or more as like a ticket that gains her access to resources, and even luxury, she might want. As Clare values social status more heavily than her inherited identity, she abandons her race to receive a much higher status from the society despite the stress she had for being exposed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is glad that her daughter is also light. I nearly died out of terror the whole nine months before Margery was born for fear that she might be dark, Thank goodness, she turned out all right (36). Clare s thoughts and action have isolated her from the black community, even Irene and Gertrude no longer label her as part of the black society. Actually they were strangers. Strangers in their ways and means of living. Strangers in their desire and ambitions. Strangers even in their racial consciousness. Between them, the barrier was just high, just as broad, and just as firm as if Clare did not run that strain of black blood (62 63). Clare has been alienated from her past and her true ... It is simply not the knowledge of people in authority positions (Sargent Bascope, p.232, 1996). Conception, viability and visual viewpoints described are central to the debate of the beginning of life. Conception exemplifies authoritative knowledge in the United States. With forest structure, you have a wider range of variables to test the spatial arrangement and physical characteristics of the trees in a given forest. The spatial arrangement or density in a forest includes measurements such as basal area, which is the ratio of the area of tree stems compared to the total area of a stand, and number of stems per hectare. Physical characteristics of trees include diameter at breast height and canopy height (Cook 2001; McGroddy et al. 2013). I was frustrated with the progress I had made over the past couple of months in my quest to learn the art of playing jazz. This new form of music puzzled me; after analyzing chord progression after chord progression, I felt like I hadn t progressed since I started. My fanatical obsession with jazz started just as the school year was ending. I had already been in my middle school s jazz ensemble for some time now, but all we played were monotonous blues charts where my fellow bandmates and I would haphazardly attempt to improvise over a pentatonic scale. My band director brought in her vinyl copy of Miles Davis landmark 1959 album, Kind of Blue as part of our weekly listening test. It transformed my understanding of jazz. Before then the only jazz I knew was Chuck Mangione and David Benoit tunes my mom had put on while cooking or driving. The haunting melodies of So What and Blue in Green were a complete divergence from what were been playing throughout the school year. What I had witnessed was not dance music, but an image of a smokey downtown jazz bar painted by Davis himself. And while the rest of the ensemble passed it off as old man music , I wondered, how do I sound like that? And thus began my investigation of jazz that day. • 26. We All Learn From Our Mistakes Essay Everyone, at some point in their life, has made a mistake. Sometimes we get lucky and only falter a little, making it through the problem relatively intact. Other times, we mess up a lot and have to fix what was damaged over a long period of time. However, the same is true for most, if not all cases those who make the mistake learn from it. Often times, our failures teach us valuable lessons that we only gained because of the experience we gathered after messing up. I have personally achieved a wealth of knowledge and experience just from all of my own little mishaps, and a few major ones. One instance of a failure that taught me well was when I tried to find a quick solution for boiling eggs. I was so tired of what I considered the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s obvious that the mistake I made taught me a very useful lesson that day never try to boil eggs in the microwave. Another turbulent time that taught me through failure was when I tried to arrange a birthday party for my sister. Everything was supposed to be arranged by me, so I went out a bought the invitation cards, party favors, balloons, decorations, food, and a few gifts. I filled out the invitations early and put them in a box to store them until I was ready to send them. Time flew by fast between daily life with my kids and responsibilities, and before I knew it the day of the party was upon me. Quickly that morning I decorated and cooked and prepared everything. As the hour of the party came and went, no one showed up but the birthday girl, whom I had called personally. Later it occurred to me that I hadn t sent out the invitations! That was why no one had come. I soon learned from that mistake to be more organized and manage my time better when planning events. Yet another example of a failure that became instructive was when I tried to tile my bathroom floor. I simply did not want to dish out the big bucks to have a worker do my tiling, which I assumed would be an easy job. I bought the necessary items and dove into the project with an eager do it yourself attitude and absolutely no clue about what I was doing. • 27. Young Goodman Brown Hypocrisy In the late 1600s, the infamous Salem Witch Trials occurred. The Salem Witch Trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of those accused of witchcraft. In Young Goodman Brown, Nathaniel Hawthorne shows that the Puritans are hypocrites by showing that members of the Puritan community lie about their beliefs. Young Goodman Brown lives with his wife, Faith, who urges him not to travel into the forest, but Young Goodman Brown chooses to ignore Faith s advice and continue into the forest. In the woods, Brown meets with a strange traveler who he later realizes is the devil in disguise and witnesses him speak to Goody Cloyse as if they are friends. Then, he observes a witch meeting in which he is shocked to see Goody Cloyse, Faith, and other Puritans attend. This performance is accompanied by a musical rendition that relates to the poem s content, as the poem is about musician Charlie Parker. Kerouac is performing this poem in memoriam of the musician. Kerouac describes Charlie Parker in an affluent manner to attest to his musical reverence, such as calling him a great musician . The sound of the poem and the meaning are greatly intertwined with one another. The sound is musical and whimsical in nature, as the music playing compliments the poem performance. I thought that Kerouac s musical tone of voice accompanying the music playing really gave the experience of listening to a song rather than a poetry performance. It had a nice flow to the performance that added to the songlike feel to this performance when listening to it. I especially heard this tone in lines, such as we blop and we plop . The use of sound imagery helps in relating the songlike feel to poetry to the actual musician who is at the center of the poem s content and meaning. This is not the only imagery seen in the poem, as there are multiple points in the poem. Kerouac uses imagery as a way to immerse in the poem to give the reader mental images about Charlie Parker. This can be seen at the beginning of the poem when Kerouac is describing Charlie Parker, such as the line Charlie Parker looked like Buddha. Kerouac also used imagery to describe the music of Charlie Parker as well. Kerouac describes the experience of listening to Charlie Parker play in lines such as like the perfect cry of some wild gang at a jam session Wail! Whap! . This type of imagery gives the feeling of being at one of the great musician s performances. This poetry performance was one full of meaning and emotion. The music helped assist in creating this experience of emotion and meaning to the poem s content. The imagery also stands out in this performance to help create the vision of emotion and ... Newman states that students at a university should and will learn to respect others as well as develop a clear atmosphere of thought (48). This will then lead them to be able to think more independently and therefore rely more on their own intellectual skills than those of others. If and when the ideals of John Henry Newman are followed rather closely, the ability of all students to reason autonomously will increase dramatically and, thereby, decrease the amount of cheating. Since the ultimate purpose of a university is to prepare people to be good citizens in society (Newman 48), and according to Jeffrey Hart, students in a university should become citizens after they complete college (131), if cheating is minimized at university level, it will also reduce in the society. In this context, citizens should be wholesome people who are able to give back to society, the honesty they have learned in the university; once they are a part of it. The university, also, has an aim of purifying the national taste and raising the intellectual tone of society as a whole (Newman 49). She describes her mother as a person that was seen as nice by others, but not by her nor her younger siblings. She asserts that her mother, said horrible things to us more often than not and that the nice person everyone saw in her was not at all known to us (Kincaid 170). A statement she makes evident when she tells about the time his step father was buried next to her mother and her uncertainty of whether he would have liked that based on her and her siblings preferences. She claims, we would rather be dead than spend eternity lying next to her (Kincaid 170). In other terms, they despised her mother for the treatment she gave them. This astounding amount of crime all stems from run down buildings providing a safe haven for criminals to operate. In Spelman s study, he concluded that securing abandoned buildings is a highly cost effective crime control tactic for communities plagued with lawful misconduct (Spelman). In a study conducted in 2001 on property values around vacated buildings in Philadelphia, it was found that homes within 150 feet of abandoned property suffered a net value loss of $7,630 (Bass).
