The Devil In The White City Essay
The late 19th century, the Gilded Age, was seen as a prosperous and golden era for America. Yet,
underneath the gilded landscape, lay a foundation of corruption and violence. Europe saw America as
a wealthy nation lacking elegance and grace (PBS). However, the close of the 19th century and the
beginning of the 20th century would play host to the 1893 Chicago World s Fair (The Fair) or
otherwise known as, The Columbian Exposition. The Fair would prove the Europeans wrong; the
World s Fair would define America as a country rich in innovation and culture. The Exposition
utilized burgeoning technology, business ventures and societal reforms to create an utopia that would
captivate and influence the world for six months. Thus, to a larger extent, ... Show more content on

They became active in participating and forming charities as well as advocating for progressive
reforms. In addition, urbanization in the late 19th century allowed women to play a bigger role in
society. As evidenced in Larson s novel, The Devil In The White City, women contributed to the
economy and participated in the workforce. They sought work as typewriters, stenographers,
seamstresses, and weavers (Larson 11). No longer were young women relegated to the house. Women
began to advocate for ideas that they believed in: Elizabeth Cady Stanton argued in favor of divorce.
Clarence Darrow advocated free love (Larson 12). The Columbian Exposition took advantaged of the
flourishing role of women outside the home. A Board of Lady Managers governed alongside the
World s Columbian Commission. Furthermore, Burnham decided that the Woman s Building, which
was to be part of the Court of Honor, was to be designed by a woman. The job was given to twenty
one year old female architect Sophia Hayden (Larson 120). Hayden was chosen to design a building
that would be shown to the whole world. Moreover, she was not picked because of social connections
or money, she was chosen purely on merit. The Exposition showcased the burgeoning role of women
in society by allowing women to play a vital role in the

Ways Of Knowing
No knowledge can be produced by a single way of knowing. Discuss.
There are several ways to produce knowledge. Producing knowledge requires different beliefs to be
justified by different ways that we can acquire knowledge around us. Some of those ways of knowing
are reasoning, imagining, intuition, using our memory and faith, and they are mostly used as
combinations to support and complete each other to create a well guided whole knowledge. I agree
with the idea that no knowledge can be produced by a single way of knowing. Although a knowledge
seems to be produced by a single way of knowing, there is always another way of knowing that is
there, hidden somewhere, to support the other one. By stating no knowledge , it means that there
should be no exceptions, not even a single one so that all the situations should prove this statement
right. Using a single way of knowing should refer to the ways of knowing which will be working in a
complete isolation. Therefore we cannot consider a way of knowing, which seems to work single but
have the support of another one, as isolated because in that situation this will be an exception to
disprove the statement single . Also, once a counter argument manages to confute the statement and
show that knowledge can be produced by a single way of knowing, there should be no more to discuss
about because no knowledge means exactly none of the situations. The reason why this title is worth
to discuss is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

would encourage Toula to open up by validating her feelings and experiences .Building a positive
relationship by identifying any of the possible barriers that may affect her communication and using
the body language technique will allow Toula to feel more comfortable and relaxed. By using the
technique of paraphrasing it will allow Toula to hear what she has said and know that you are

When beginning to assess Toula it is important to assess which developmental stage she is at, this will

1889. In this 1953 add for Aunt Jemima pancakes and waffles, visual rhetoric, such as target audience,
context, and focus, are noticeably prevalent in order to persuade available markets to buy their
product. This advertisement for Aunt Jemima pancakes and waffles has a clear intent to sell viewers
their product. The advertisement has a blank, white background and many separate images and
lettering throughout it. The two boldest images seen are the stack of three pancakes in the center of the
ad and the words, Wake Up written in red across the top. The pancakes have pieces of bacon around
the edges and are covered in butter and syrup. The next features of the add that stick out are the words,
to Aunt Jemima Pancakes written in black as well as a smiling black woman who almost seems to be
presenting the pancakes. Other small images are found amongst the poster. There is a robin which
seems to be singing on a branch in the top right corner and a hand holding a fork that has taken a bite
out of the pancakes on the right side. There is also a small, almost separate advertisement for aunt

Direct Oxidation Of Methanol Lab Report
Proposed Mechanisms for the Direct Oxidation of Methane to Methanol
The oxidation of CH4 usually progresses to C02 and H20 because the intermediates are a series of
highly reactive radical reactions and this makes partial oxidation of CH3 into CH3OH very hard. In
addition, CH3OH oxidizes faster than CH4 and requires less energy for its oxidation. Industrial
attempts to synthesize methanol from methane is usually done indirectly since the direct methods have
low methanol specificity and yield. Current industrial methods for producing methanol involve
making synthesis gas from methane and then catalytically converting it to methanol. Several methods
are used such as steam reforming, and dry reforming. These methods require high temperature of
about 800°C, the reactions are endothermic requiring lot of energy. The end product of the reactions
also requires intensive purification from impurities such as sulfur and other compounds. Finding
feasible mechanisms for oxidation of methane to methanol cannot be over emphasized because of the
uses of methanol such as production of other chemicals like formaldehyde, acetic acid, for extraction
of sulfur and most importantly as an alternative to fossil fuels.
Due to the severe reaction conditions, energy intensive, and less efficient means of partial oxidative
production of methanol, ways of directly oxidizing methane to methanol are being investigated. Some
of the methods that have been researched are high pressure oxidation of methane in a flow system,
catalytic oxidation with copper, and gas phase homogenous oxidation where the reactors have no
stainless steel and products are prevented from contacting the wall of the reactor to improve methanol
selectivity and yield. Also, introduction of strong oxidants like N20 was explored, however, strong
oxidants are very expensive and so not feasible for industrial use.
Recent research, however, uses Methane Monooxygenases as a model. Methane Monooxygenases are
oxidoreductase enzymes commonly found in methanotropic bacteria. One of the most studied
methanotropic bacteria is Methylococcus capsulatus. It converts methane to methanol then methanol
to formaldehyde and formaldehyde to formate and carbon dioxide which is used energy

My Memories Of My Memory Essay
Going through my memory bank to remember something I learned, which seems so long ago, has
made me laugh because roller skating pops right into my head. Out of all things to remember that was
my worst and most exciting learning experience. I could not even tell you how old I was. I would
guess between five and eight years old. I remember getting a big brown box and in that box was a pair
of roller skates. I remember being so happy because I going to roller skate with all the other kids in the
apartment complex, so I thought.
Playing with the other kids was not hard to do, but skating was difficult thing to learn. Once I put
those skates on, I could not stand upright. I would fall forward on my knees or backwards on my
backside. I remember my arms flying all over the place. A couple of kids grabbed my hands to help
me, so I would not fall, but I still fell down. After some time, I learned to master standing completely
still and only being able to move my head from left to right. I managed to scoot and hold on to the
walls to get around, but when I let go to move on my own, I just landed on the ground. Each time I
tried to use my foot to push, I would just tip over. I must have looked like a tree falling over each time.
I was unable to keep up with my friends, which meant I had many tantrums. I stood there hurt because
I had fallen so many times that I had cut up my knees and hands and at that moment, I decided I was
not skating anymore. Being physically hurt

Counseling Ethics Case Study Essay
In the case study of Gwen, there is one major problem presented. That problem is whether it is ethical
for a supervisor to counsel his supervisee. I think that Gwen is going through the grieving process
after learning about her mother s condition and is in a vulnerable spot. She feels like she cannot
continue her work with hospice patients because of personal feelings. Ken thinks that Gwen is a great
therapist and does not want to see her give up. He also feels like he would be the most effective person
to give Gwen counseling, because of their trusting relationship. I think that this would be a bad idea
and could cross professional boundaries. The Ethical Guidelines for Counseling Supervisors strongly

He might also present a biased decision because he thinks Gwen is a great counselor and does not
want to see her quit, which could be the best thing for Gwen s well being. There was another way of
dealing with this situation. Ken should have referred Gwen to another therapist to work on her
problems and let her decide what the best path to choose is. He should have respected the professional
boundaries of his career and known that the situation he was entering was potentially unethical.
Extending the boundary beyond supervision can complicate the supervisory relationship. The same
types of ethical issues still apply, if Ken had recommended to Gwen that she temporarily discontinue
her field placement, and enter therapy in his private practice. He still has the establishment of the
supervisor supervisee relationship with Gwen; it is just temporarily on hold. It still creates a dual
relationship that can potentially be harmful and the conflict of interest can still apply. The situation
can also effect Ken s reputation and the reputation of this profession. Frederic G. Reamer (2007)

The Police Officer Bill Of Rights
Abstract
It is crucial that administrators develop safeguards to ensure that internal investigations are conducted
fairly and ethically, demonstrating the best interest of both the officer and its employers. This paper
discusses the Police Officer Bill of Rights created by a subcommittee created by the Legislative
Committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the importance of it being
implemented and standardized across the United States.
The Amendments found in the United States Constitution contain several provisions to protect citizens
from various infringements from the government. These provisions have greatly influenced what law
enforcement is today. Due to the power of a law enforcement official, the public expects officers to be
held to a higher ethical standard. Part of that expectation entails that officers will follow in the law and
lead by example. Unfortunately, no one is perfect and departments will always have those law
enforcement officers who stray from what is right and act questionably on and off duty. To ensure that
officers are being held accountable for their actions, departments will employ their own Internal
Investigation division to help identify, discipline, and/or remove employees found guilty of
misconduct. Therefore, it is important that administrators develop safeguards to ensure that internal
investigations are conducted fairly and ethically, demonstrating the best interest of both the

What s so Amazing About Grace Book Report Essay

What s So Amazing about Grace? Book Report What s So Amazing about Grace? is a book written by
Philip Yancey. It begins with a twisted story of a prostitute living on the streets. She is unable to feed
her two year old child and has to find another way to earn money. She could not think of any other
alternatives and began selling her child out for prostitution. She could make much more money this
way than she could in one night. The woman began counseling and when asked if she had ever
considered going to church, her response was that attending church would only make her feel worse
about herself. Yancey describes Earth as a place full of ungrace . This is a term that ... Show more

Because Jesus extended grace to all, we should do the same. There are none who are not deserving or
worthy of our grace. This is important for us to remember. It is true that grace does not come easy, and
that it is not necessarily easy to give. Grace is not a small display of kindness; it is a sacrifice and a
gift to others. Just as Jesus gave us the gift of grace by suffering and dying on the cross for us, we
should be able to give gifts of grace at our own expense to others. I very much enjoyed this book and
was spiritually moved by it. I agree with most of what Philip Yancey has to say about lack of grace not
only in the church, but in the world also. In today s day and age, it seems that everyone is in it for
themselves. Most do not take the time of day to stop and give their grace to the needy. It helped to
strengthen my view that all of deserving of grace and that we, as Christians, should be reading to give
our grace to others. While I do support that idea that we need to cure the world of ungrace , I do not
feel that we need to do this in order to earn God s grace. This is a view that Yancey supports in the
book and I do not happen to agree with it. Grace is in fact, a gift and it is not something we have to
earn by giving other s grace. By following God s example, we should also give others this same grace
God gave us, but it is not a requirement in order for us to receive His grace. Overall, I feel spiritually

Essay on Factors that Helped Stalin in his Rise to Power
Factors that Helped Stalin in his Rise to Power Following the death of Lenin in 1922, it was simply a
matter of time before one member of the Politburo, who announced they would be acting as a
collective leadership, gained individual power. The successful individual was Stalin, who hailing from
humble beginnings, rose up through the ranks to become the brutal and ruthless dictator of the Soviet
State. Stalin managed to do this not simply because of his personal strengths or brilliances, neither
was it purely down to luck. It was due to a combination of factors, some concerning Stalin s actions
and his opportunist ways, some to do with his opponents such as Trotsky and their fundamental

The post of Commissar for Nationalities gave Stalin little power, but it was the first step in his rise up
through the ranks. Lenin remained impressed by Stalin s work and continued to promote him further.
By 1919 he was the Liaison officer between the Politburo and Orgburo, allowing him to monitor both
party policy and party personnel. It was here that Stalin first showed signs of taking advantage of the
opportunities his positions gave him. He began to build up personal files on all party members,
detailing their actions which he later used against people such as Kamenev and Zinoviev in the fight
for individual power. This showed how even though Stalin may not have been planning his rise to
power, he still took clever, devious steps along the way which assisted him without realising it was at
the time. However, before his death, the amount of power Stalin had accumulated began to worry
Lenin, who had once described him as That wonderful Georgian . He expressed his concern in his
Testament, requesting that after his death, the members of the politburo must find some way to
remove Stalin of this position into one with much less power. Stalin, worried by the damning
comments within the testament, urged the other members of the Politburo, also criticised to suppress
the Testament. The only

The Nationals played strikingly well last year, albeit Bryce Harper having a down year. During the

Family Systems Therapy And Structural Family Therapy
Historically, the field of social work and its practitioners have been concerned with the welfare of
families and their functioning. When dysfunction is present, families often seek guidance through
family therapy, which has become a strengths based approach to intervention that emphasizes families
resiliency and capacity to solve their problems. Within family practice, practitioners implement
diverse theoretical approaches and practice models, which function as a foundation for family
assessment and intervention methods. This paper seeks to explicate two family intervention models,
Bowen family systems therapy and structural family therapy, and utilize the most effective approach
to develop a treatment plan for a family seeking therapy.
Family Intervention Models
Bowen Family Systems Therapy Rooted in systems theory, Murray Bowen s Bowen family systems
therapy acknowledges the family as a multigenerational emotional system (Nichols, 2013). This
model perceives the family as an interconnected network of emotional reactivity that shapes family
dynamics and interaction patterns. Bowen proposed eight interlocking concepts to elucidate familial
patterns: differentiation of self, triangles, nuclear family emotional system, family projection process,
multigenerational transmission process, emotional cutoff, sibling position, and societal emotional
process (Nichols, 2013). It also views families through an individual and collective lens, assessing
how members emotionally driven

There has been a tremendous amount of change in the global markets in the past few years. This has
predominantly due to the fact that there is a shift in the consumer mindset, consumption patterns,
changes in demography and organizational attitude brought through by advancement in technology.
This has led to a change in marketing strategies and practices across the world. Marketing thinkers and
companies are prompted to frequently re think their strategies and adopt new theoretical and practical
approach to address specific marketing changes and also to think beyond the scope of traditional

boys can wear anything they would like, for example muscle shirts, shirts with alcohol, shirts with
naked women on them, but not even get dress coded or a warning (Bassett). Meanwhile, a student that
was a girl gotten dress coded because her collarbone was showing and it was deemed that it was
inappropriate, even after her mother brought her a scarf in that covered her collarbone (Alvarez).
Another student which was also a girl got dress coded because her skirt was a few centimeters under
her finger tip. They had to send her home, she had missed all her classes and what they were teaching
that day because of what they thought it was inappropriate (Bassett). Analuiza states that The only
reason I go to school is to get my education. When I get dressed in the morning, my intention is not to

Autobiography Of A Descriptive Baseball Player
I move to the edge of my seat, the ridges in the aluminum bleachers are very uncomfortable. I feel the
sun shining on my face. The cool northern breeze brushes across my cheeks and through my hair. The
player s bright white uniforms with royal blue lettering stand out against the green grass. The knees of
the player s pants stained with brown from the dirt, breaking up the white simplicity of the bottom half
of the uniform. The pitcher winds up, transferring every ounce of energy from his toes, to his
fingertips and, into the baseball. Within the blink of an eye the ball has left his hand and entered the
catcher s glove. The impact of the ball against the padded leather glove makes a popping sound. Strike
one. The fans begin to cheer. The batter

An Income Wave Analysis
Alt j (∆) is a British indie rock band that was formed in 2007 and released their first album in 2012 An
Awesome wave produced by Charlie Andrew. Over the past few years, the four piece band have taken
the indie rock music scene by storm winning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 2012 and their
second album going straight to number one in the UK. The band members met whilst studying at
Leeds University and it was there that the four of them started to experiment with music together, all
bringing different abilities, styles and musical influences to the band.

This helps to balance the song with not putting too much emphasis on the drums and rather having
them intwined with the instumental. Alt j drummer Thom Green said that Phil Selways drumming
definitely influenced my style. The off beats and the odd time signatures, he just fits so well with the
instrumental, and I just started playing like that (Rolling stone, 2015). As Charlie Andrews explains in
an interview with Sound on Sound, 2013, drummer Thom Green does not use cymbals, The only
slightly cymbal like thing he uses is the back end of a saucepan, which he uses for the hi hat, and that
in itself is quite a unique sound. That gives you a lot of space to mess around with the room sound for
the drums without the cymbals going all over it. Andrews also mentions that the snare drum used is a
tiny 10 inch thing that he possibly bought from the toy shop. This allows the snare to have a good
crack to it and then also with a little distortion, can make the snare ring (2013, Sound on Sound). Buy
using these kind of makeshift, minimalist drum sounds, it ads to the songs organic and worldly feel as
though they are tribal percussion instruments rather than actual

The Gangster Film Genre Of The Mafia
The gangster film genre is a subgenre of the crime film, dealing with organized crime and more often
than not, the Mafia. Though gangster films have their root in the silent era, the genre became widely
popular in the 1930 s Hollywood Studio era, which is characterized by the Hollywood Genre System.
Genre films offered economic advantages, including the repeated use of standardized themes,
elements, characters and iconography. Additionally, genre films were easily marketable, as audiences
knew what to expect from each genre. If a viewer enjoyed one film from a particular genre, they were
likely to enjoy any other film falling into that genre. Specific themes and elements can be readily
identified in gangster films. For one, they commonly question the meaning of success and failure in
terms of the American dream. Warshow asserts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Dissatisfied with modern American life, he uses his methods of criminality and violence in an attempt
to overcome the system, redefine his circumstances, achieve success on his own terms and ultimately

In this situation there are two things happening, Ritchie Gravy is empowering and lack of leadership
from Harry Soliman.
Now if we analysis the situation here in a straight line it seems more like, kitchen staffs are the tough
guys of the organization who are making the money for the business so obviously management not
arguing about anything with them even though they do wrong things with other floor staffs as floor
staffs are easier to find. As management thinks like in this way so even though the floor staff is
competent in work they can t really perform the best out of them which results affect on business.
Obviously Ritchie holds quite a bit of power even though Michelle is above him in formal authority.
Given this, what power issues are in play in this case and how might playing with the power structures
affect Café Hip? How do you suggest Café Hip neutralize Ritchie s power without effecting
performance?
Empowerment addresses the power inequality inherent in subordination. Food and Beverage manager
Michelle Cook is above Executive chef Ritchie Gravy in formal authority but she is subordinate
because Ritchie is in a relational position of power over her. Empowerment, therefore, concerns
releasing the shackles placed on floor staffs by kitchen staffs who have power in Café Hip. In this
case, as management is empowering the

The Negative Effects Of Pornography
With the surge of wider spread accessibility to the internet on mobile phones and laptops comes a
surge in the accessibility and viewing of pornography. Much research has been done to study how
such an increase in pornography consumption is impacting the marriage relationship. Some findings
have indicated that users incur serious negative effects, including a 25% higher divorce rate, are 101%
more likely to be unfaithful to a spouse, and were 12% less likely to describe their marriage as very
happy (Doran Price, 2014). Interestingly, various studies have also noted that the effects may be
different for men than they are for women, stating that for women who viewed pornography in ranges
between 2 3 times a month and once a day or more, their marital quality was actually higher than
those who never viewed pornography... (Perry, 2017). Considering such contradictory findings, it can
be difficult for couples to know how pornography use plays into a healthy marriage, if it does at all.
Pornography use, at the very least, has been shown to create conflict and stress between spouses if the
non using partner is more religious or has negative views surrounding pornography. Is has also been
linked with lower self esteem in women. The affects of this activity must be viewed not only through
an individual lens, but through a couple s view. Taking such a view may reveal that regardless of the
empirical outcomes of porn use, perceptions, even, can have a serious negative impact

the footsteps of heroes in entertainment, and he wants to emphasize this point to the readers: You re
not human anymore. You re a shadow. You slip out of your own skin, like molting, shedding your own
history and your own future, or leaving behind everything you ever were or wanted or believed in.
You know you re about to die. And it s not a movie and you aren t a hero and all you can do is
whimper and wait (211). The emotions he feels at the time is hard to put into words, and so he makes
the reader try to experience it, just as he wants Bobby Jorgenson to experience it. Because O Brien has
accumulated familiarity with this irrational fear soldiers experience, he feels like this is a punishment
suitable in its notoriety for a new soldier like Jorgenson, and would hopefully get back at the pain he
had endured from the medic s failed aid to his gunshot

Predicting Behavior by Attitudes Essay
Predicting Behavior by Attitudes
Attitudes can be very complex, a product or service may be composed of many attributes or qualities
some of which may be more important than others to certain people. Furthermore, a persons decision
to act on his or her attitude is affected by other factors, such as approval by family and friends. For
this reason, multiattribute models have been constructed and are extremely popular among marketing
research.
Many models have been constructed but the most influential model is that of Fishbein 1973. The
Fishbein multiattribute model argues that attitudes can predict behaviour. It measures three
components of attitude. Salient beliefs people have about an attitude ... Show more content on

In many cases knowledge of a person s attitude is not a very good predictor of behaviour. Many
studies have obtained a very low correlation between a person s reported attitude towards something
and his or her actual behaviour towards it. (Wicker 1969). For, instance Stacey 1981 found only a
small correlation between attitudes and alcohol consumption. Furthermore, the model doesn t consider
people s past behaviour, despite evidence that this is a good predictor of future behaviour. (Bagozzi
1991). Previous performance of a behaviour helps to explain the extent of the person s actual
behavioural control in a particular situation. (Kashima et al 1992).
Following on from this criticism the Fishbein model was extended to improve its predictive ability.
This revised version is the theory of reasoned action (Azjen and Fishbein 1977) and assumes that
behaviour is a function of the intention to perform that behaviour. This new model measures
behavioural intentions, recognising uncontrollable factors, and the power of other peoples influence.
The subjective norm has been added to include the effects of what we believe other people think we
should do and also the

My Experience At Panera Bread
Life teaches us lessons every day. Sometimes when we are in the midsts of frustration or confusion we
never see clearly or understand the lesson from the situations we are put in. It is only through
moments of reflection when a person can begin to see how certain situations have shaped their way of
thinking or doing things. For a little over half a year, I worked a part time job during my senior year of
high school at Panera Bread. During my time there i was able to observe and see all kinds of different
family dynamics and people walk through the door every day. It was strange, it was different, and it
was amazing all at the same time to see all of those different walks of life. A favorite memory of mine
there that I will never forget occurred on Super Bowl Sunday night. Looking back on my experience
from that frustrating night, I find that i learned the value of teamwork, work relationships, and I
learned how the most unpleasant situations can turn into great unexpected surprises. To start at the
very beginning, I have always had this certain manager that i could never really get along with
workwise. Her name was Melissa and she was a corporate trained manager, making her more official
and strict then the other managers and always going by the books . She was a short, long grey haired

Fairy Tales By The Grimm Brothers
Originally, fairy tales were used to teach children social norms or cultural beliefs within a society,
instead of primarily being used as entrainment. Fairy tales are also known to guide children to accept
the traditional stereotypes of being female and male, as they typically reinforce the idea that women
would be more desirable if they are not only obedient, but pure and beautiful as well. The view of
women as a lessor sex is also a common belief in a patriarchal society, which is commonly found in
most fairy tales. The ideas which fairy tales reinforce needs to be challenged. Written by the Grimm
brothers, the two fairy tales Little Snow White {1819} and Little Briar Rose {1812} will be analysed,
along with Hans Christian Andersen s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The film does discriminate against women, as it portrays women to be submissive to a man s will. The
film also displays an attitude that it is perfectly acceptable for a beautiful woman to fall in love with
an ugly beast, but there is no indication that it is okay for a handsome man to fall for an ugly woman.
The film also displays woman solely in the private sphere, and the one occasion where Belle leaves it,
she has to be rescued. This indicates the idea that once a woman leaves the comforts of home, she has
to require the services of man to ensure her safety. Aside from the enchantress, all other female
character are shown as silly and selfish.
The film also displays the idea that if one does not conform to societies guidelines and values, then
they will be deemed as an outcast. Throughout the beginning of the film it is clear to the reader that
Belle is very intelligent, and possesses qualities which are typically reserved for male characters, such
as being adventures, reading, and inventing. Despite her obvious intelligence, the villagers deem her
as an outcast due to her overall longing for adventure. This reinforces the thinking that intelligent
females are a rarity, and to be something to be tolerated, but not encouraged. This is shown when the
villagers attempt to foil her ideas,

Intersectionality Of Black Males Essay
by stereotypes and uses those stereotypes to judge and teach African American males. This means that
the model does not recognize each individual s struggles and tries to solve the struggles with color
blind utilitarianism policies within school systems. The deficit model fails to acknowledge color and
in doing so the model inherently fails to help build up African American males for success in higher
learning facilities.
However, Critical Race Theory defines this occurrence as the failure to see the intersectionality of
African Americans. Intersectionality is the concept that no one has a simple, uncomplicated identity
based on race alone. Each African American male has an identity, which intersects with class, sex,
sexual orientation, political orientation, disability and personal history informing each person s

should impose a new paradigm for both public policy considerations and private personal and
institutional practice called illuminated individualism. Illuminated individualism seeks to respect the
uniqueness of all persons and communities and thus not to assume that racial identity or country of

  • 2. The Devil In The White City Essay The late 19th century, the Gilded Age, was seen as a prosperous and golden era for America. Yet, underneath the gilded landscape, lay a foundation of corruption and violence. Europe saw America as a wealthy nation lacking elegance and grace (PBS). However, the close of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century would play host to the 1893 Chicago World s Fair (The Fair) or otherwise known as, The Columbian Exposition. The Fair would prove the Europeans wrong; the World s Fair would define America as a country rich in innovation and culture. The Exposition utilized burgeoning technology, business ventures and societal reforms to create an utopia that would captivate and influence the world for six months. Thus, to a larger extent, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They became active in participating and forming charities as well as advocating for progressive reforms. In addition, urbanization in the late 19th century allowed women to play a bigger role in society. As evidenced in Larson s novel, The Devil In The White City, women contributed to the economy and participated in the workforce. They sought work as typewriters, stenographers, seamstresses, and weavers (Larson 11). No longer were young women relegated to the house. Women began to advocate for ideas that they believed in: Elizabeth Cady Stanton argued in favor of divorce. Clarence Darrow advocated free love (Larson 12). The Columbian Exposition took advantaged of the flourishing role of women outside the home. A Board of Lady Managers governed alongside the World s Columbian Commission. Furthermore, Burnham decided that the Woman s Building, which was to be part of the Court of Honor, was to be designed by a woman. The job was given to twenty one year old female architect Sophia Hayden (Larson 120). Hayden was chosen to design a building that would be shown to the whole world. Moreover, she was not picked because of social connections or money, she was chosen purely on merit. The Exposition showcased the burgeoning role of women in society by allowing women to play a vital role in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Ways Of Knowing No knowledge can be produced by a single way of knowing. Discuss. There are several ways to produce knowledge. Producing knowledge requires different beliefs to be justified by different ways that we can acquire knowledge around us. Some of those ways of knowing are reasoning, imagining, intuition, using our memory and faith, and they are mostly used as combinations to support and complete each other to create a well guided whole knowledge. I agree with the idea that no knowledge can be produced by a single way of knowing. Although a knowledge seems to be produced by a single way of knowing, there is always another way of knowing that is there, hidden somewhere, to support the other one. By stating no knowledge , it means that there should be no exceptions, not even a single one so that all the situations should prove this statement right. Using a single way of knowing should refer to the ways of knowing which will be working in a complete isolation. Therefore we cannot consider a way of knowing, which seems to work single but have the support of another one, as isolated because in that situation this will be an exception to disprove the statement single . Also, once a counter argument manages to confute the statement and show that knowledge can be produced by a single way of knowing, there should be no more to discuss about because no knowledge means exactly none of the situations. The reason why this title is worth to discuss is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A way of knowing by its own, is like a building without bases to make it a complete whole. As times have changed their ads have too and have always stayed persuasive, keeping them in business since 1889. In this 1953 add for Aunt Jemima pancakes and waffles, visual rhetoric, such as target audience, context, and focus, are noticeably prevalent in order to persuade available markets to buy their product. This advertisement for Aunt Jemima pancakes and waffles has a clear intent to sell viewers their product. The advertisement has a blank, white background and many separate images and lettering throughout it. The two boldest images seen are the stack of three pancakes in the center of the ad and the words, Wake Up written in red across the top. The pancakes have pieces of bacon around the edges and are covered in butter and syrup. The next features of the add that stick out are the words, to Aunt Jemima Pancakes written in black as well as a smiling black woman who almost seems to be presenting the pancakes. Other small images are found amongst the poster. There is a robin which seems to be singing on a branch in the top right corner and a hand holding a fork that has taken a bite out of the pancakes on the right side. There is also a small, almost separate advertisement for aunt jemima spice shakers in the lower left hand corner. • 7. Direct Oxidation Of Methanol Lab Report Proposed Mechanisms for the Direct Oxidation of Methane to Methanol The oxidation of CH4 usually progresses to C02 and H20 because the intermediates are a series of highly reactive radical reactions and this makes partial oxidation of CH3 into CH3OH very hard. In addition, CH3OH oxidizes faster than CH4 and requires less energy for its oxidation. Industrial attempts to synthesize methanol from methane is usually done indirectly since the direct methods have low methanol specificity and yield. Current industrial methods for producing methanol involve making synthesis gas from methane and then catalytically converting it to methanol. Several methods are used such as steam reforming, and dry reforming. These methods require high temperature of about 800°C, the reactions are endothermic requiring lot of energy. The end product of the reactions also requires intensive purification from impurities such as sulfur and other compounds. Finding feasible mechanisms for oxidation of methane to methanol cannot be over emphasized because of the uses of methanol such as production of other chemicals like formaldehyde, acetic acid, for extraction of sulfur and most importantly as an alternative to fossil fuels. Due to the severe reaction conditions, energy intensive, and less efficient means of partial oxidative production of methanol, ways of directly oxidizing methane to methanol are being investigated. Some of the methods that have been researched are high pressure oxidation of methane in a flow system, catalytic oxidation with copper, and gas phase homogenous oxidation where the reactors have no stainless steel and products are prevented from contacting the wall of the reactor to improve methanol selectivity and yield. Also, introduction of strong oxidants like N20 was explored, however, strong oxidants are very expensive and so not feasible for industrial use. Recent research, however, uses Methane Monooxygenases as a model. Methane Monooxygenases are oxidoreductase enzymes commonly found in methanotropic bacteria. One of the most studied methanotropic bacteria is Methylococcus capsulatus. It converts methane to methanol then methanol to formaldehyde and formaldehyde to formate and carbon dioxide which is used energy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. My Memories Of My Memory Essay Going through my memory bank to remember something I learned, which seems so long ago, has made me laugh because roller skating pops right into my head. Out of all things to remember that was my worst and most exciting learning experience. I could not even tell you how old I was. I would guess between five and eight years old. I remember getting a big brown box and in that box was a pair of roller skates. I remember being so happy because I going to roller skate with all the other kids in the apartment complex, so I thought. Playing with the other kids was not hard to do, but skating was difficult thing to learn. Once I put those skates on, I could not stand upright. I would fall forward on my knees or backwards on my backside. I remember my arms flying all over the place. A couple of kids grabbed my hands to help me, so I would not fall, but I still fell down. After some time, I learned to master standing completely still and only being able to move my head from left to right. I managed to scoot and hold on to the walls to get around, but when I let go to move on my own, I just landed on the ground. Each time I tried to use my foot to push, I would just tip over. I must have looked like a tree falling over each time. I was unable to keep up with my friends, which meant I had many tantrums. I stood there hurt because I had fallen so many times that I had cut up my knees and hands and at that moment, I decided I was not skating anymore. Being physically hurt ... I think that Gwen is going through the grieving process after learning about her mother s condition and is in a vulnerable spot. She feels like she cannot continue her work with hospice patients because of personal feelings. Ken thinks that Gwen is a great therapist and does not want to see her give up. He also feels like he would be the most effective person to give Gwen counseling, because of their trusting relationship. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He might also present a biased decision because he thinks Gwen is a great counselor and does not want to see her quit, which could be the best thing for Gwen s well being. There was another way of dealing with this situation. Ken should have referred Gwen to another therapist to work on her problems and let her decide what the best path to choose is. He should have respected the professional boundaries of his career and known that the situation he was entering was potentially unethical. Extending the boundary beyond supervision can complicate the supervisory relationship. The same types of ethical issues still apply, if Ken had recommended to Gwen that she temporarily discontinue her field placement, and enter therapy in his private practice. He still has the establishment of the supervisor supervisee relationship with Gwen; it is just temporarily on hold. It still creates a dual relationship that can potentially be harmful and the conflict of interest can still apply. The situation can also effect Ken s reputation and the reputation of this profession. Frederic G. Reamer (2007) quoted, The current National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, unlike its predecessors, includes numerous standards pertaining to dual relationships involving social work supervisors, consultants, educators, and field instructors (standards 3.01[b,c] and 3.02[d]). The Police Officer Bill Of Rights Abstract It is crucial that administrators develop safeguards to ensure that internal investigations are conducted fairly and ethically, demonstrating the best interest of both the officer and its employers. This paper discusses the Police Officer Bill of Rights created by a subcommittee created by the Legislative Committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the importance of it being implemented and standardized across the United States. The Amendments found in the United States Constitution contain several provisions to protect citizens from various infringements from the government. These provisions have greatly influenced what law enforcement is today. Due to the power of a law enforcement official, the public expects officers to be held to a higher ethical standard. Part of that expectation entails that officers will follow in the law and lead by example. Unfortunately, no one is perfect and departments will always have those law enforcement officers who stray from what is right and act questionably on and off duty. To ensure that officers are being held accountable for their actions, departments will employ their own Internal Investigation division to help identify, discipline, and/or remove employees found guilty of misconduct. Therefore, it is important that administrators develop safeguards to ensure that internal investigations are conducted fairly and ethically, demonstrating the best interest of both the ... • 12. What s so Amazing About Grace Book Report Essay Cameron Peterson Mr. Oswald Romans Period 4 11 January 2012 What s So Amazing about Grace? Book Report What s So Amazing about Grace? is a book written by Philip Yancey. It begins with a twisted story of a prostitute living on the streets. She is unable to feed her two year old child and has to find another way to earn money. She could not think of any other alternatives and began selling her child out for prostitution. She could make much more money this way than she could in one night. There are none who are not deserving or worthy of our grace. This is important for us to remember. It is true that grace does not come easy, and that it is not necessarily easy to give. Grace is not a small display of kindness; it is a sacrifice and a gift to others. Just as Jesus gave us the gift of grace by suffering and dying on the cross for us, we should be able to give gifts of grace at our own expense to others. I very much enjoyed this book and was spiritually moved by it. I agree with most of what Philip Yancey has to say about lack of grace not only in the church, but in the world also. In today s day and age, it seems that everyone is in it for themselves. Most do not take the time of day to stop and give their grace to the needy. It helped to strengthen my view that all of deserving of grace and that we, as Christians, should be reading to give our grace to others. While I do support that idea that we need to cure the world of ungrace , I do not feel that we need to do this in order to earn God s grace. This is a view that Yancey supports in the book and I do not happen to agree with it. Grace is in fact, a gift and it is not something we have to earn by giving other s grace. By following God s example, we should also give others this same grace God gave us, but it is not a requirement in order for us to receive His grace. Overall, I feel spiritually strengthened by ... Essay on Factors that Helped Stalin in his Rise to Power Factors that Helped Stalin in his Rise to Power Following the death of Lenin in 1922, it was simply a matter of time before one member of the Politburo, who announced they would be acting as a collective leadership, gained individual power. The successful individual was Stalin, who hailing from humble beginnings, rose up through the ranks to become the brutal and ruthless dictator of the Soviet State. Stalin managed to do this not simply because of his personal strengths or brilliances, neither was it purely down to luck. Lenin remained impressed by Stalin s work and continued to promote him further. By 1919 he was the Liaison officer between the Politburo and Orgburo, allowing him to monitor both party policy and party personnel. It was here that Stalin first showed signs of taking advantage of the opportunities his positions gave him. He began to build up personal files on all party members, detailing their actions which he later used against people such as Kamenev and Zinoviev in the fight for individual power. This showed how even though Stalin may not have been planning his rise to power, he still took clever, devious steps along the way which assisted him without realising it was at the time. However, before his death, the amount of power Stalin had accumulated began to worry Lenin, who had once described him as That wonderful Georgian . He expressed his concern in his Testament, requesting that after his death, the members of the politburo must find some way to remove Stalin of this position into one with much less power. When dysfunction is present, families often seek guidance through family therapy, which has become a strengths based approach to intervention that emphasizes families resiliency and capacity to solve their problems. Within family practice, practitioners implement diverse theoretical approaches and practice models, which function as a foundation for family assessment and intervention methods. • 33. Predicting Behavior by Attitudes Essay Predicting Behavior by Attitudes Attitudes can be very complex, a product or service may be composed of many attributes or qualities some of which may be more important than others to certain people. Furthermore, a persons decision to act on his or her attitude is affected by other factors, such as approval by family and friends. For this reason, multiattribute models have been constructed and are extremely popular among marketing research. Many models have been constructed but the most influential model is that of Fishbein 1973. The Fishbein multiattribute model argues that attitudes can predict behaviour. It measures three components of attitude. Salient beliefs people have about an attitude ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In many cases knowledge of a person s attitude is not a very good predictor of behaviour. Many studies have obtained a very low correlation between a person s reported attitude towards something and his or her actual behaviour towards it. (Wicker 1969). For, instance Stacey 1981 found only a small correlation between attitudes and alcohol consumption. Furthermore, the model doesn t consider people s past behaviour, despite evidence that this is a good predictor of future behaviour. (Bagozzi 1991). Previous performance of a behaviour helps to explain the extent of the person s actual behavioural control in a particular situation. (Kashima et al 1992). Following on from this criticism the Fishbein model was extended to improve its predictive ability. This revised version is the theory of reasoned action (Azjen and Fishbein 1977) and assumes that behaviour is a function of the intention to perform that behaviour. This new model measures behavioural intentions, recognising uncontrollable factors, and the power of other peoples influence. The subjective norm has been added to include the effects of what we believe other people think we should do and also the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. My Experience At Panera Bread Life teaches us lessons every day. Sometimes when we are in the midsts of frustration or confusion we never see clearly or understand the lesson from the situations we are put in. It is only through moments of reflection when a person can begin to see how certain situations have shaped their way of thinking or doing things. For a little over half a year, I worked a part time job during my senior year of high school at Panera Bread. During my time there i was able to observe and see all kinds of different family dynamics and people walk through the door every day. It was strange, it was different, and it was amazing all at the same time to see all of those different walks of life. A favorite memory of mine there that I will never forget occurred on Super Bowl Sunday night. Looking back on my experience from that frustrating night, I find that i learned the value of teamwork, work relationships, and I learned how the most unpleasant situations can turn into great unexpected surprises. To start at the very beginning, I have always had this certain manager that i could never really get along with workwise. Her name was Melissa and she was a corporate trained manager, making her more official and strict then the other managers and always going by the books . She was a short, long grey haired women that always wore these glasses that made her look like an old scary librarian. She had the nickname monster mo among the employees at the store for a reason. • 35. Fairy Tales By The Grimm Brothers Originally, fairy tales were used to teach children social norms or cultural beliefs within a society, instead of primarily being used as entrainment. Fairy tales are also known to guide children to accept the traditional stereotypes of being female and male, as they typically reinforce the idea that women would be more desirable if they are not only obedient, but pure and beautiful as well. The view of women as a lessor sex is also a common belief in a patriarchal society, which is commonly found in most fairy tales. The ideas which fairy tales reinforce needs to be challenged. Written by the Grimm brothers, the two fairy tales Little Snow White {1819} and Little Briar Rose {1812} will be analysed, along with Hans Christian Andersen s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film does discriminate against women, as it portrays women to be submissive to a man s will. The film also displays an attitude that it is perfectly acceptable for a beautiful woman to fall in love with an ugly beast, but there is no indication that it is okay for a handsome man to fall for an ugly woman. The film also displays woman solely in the private sphere, and the one occasion where Belle leaves it, she has to be rescued. This indicates the idea that once a woman leaves the comforts of home, she has to require the services of man to ensure her safety. Aside from the enchantress, all other female character are shown as silly and selfish. The film also displays the idea that if one does not conform to societies guidelines and values, then they will be deemed as an outcast. Throughout the beginning of the film it is clear to the reader that Belle is very intelligent, and possesses qualities which are typically reserved for male characters, such as being adventures, reading, and inventing. Despite her obvious intelligence, the villagers deem her as an outcast due to her overall longing for adventure. This reinforces the thinking that intelligent females are a rarity, and to be something to be tolerated, but not encouraged. This is shown when the villagers attempt to foil her ideas, ... • 36. Intersectionality Of Black Males Essay by stereotypes and uses those stereotypes to judge and teach African American males. This means that the model does not recognize each individual s struggles and tries to solve the struggles with color blind utilitarianism policies within school systems. The deficit model fails to acknowledge color and in doing so the model inherently fails to help build up African American males for success in higher learning facilities. However, Critical Race Theory defines this occurrence as the failure to see the intersectionality of African Americans. Intersectionality is the concept that no one has a simple, uncomplicated identity based on race alone. Each African American male has an identity, which intersects with class, sex, sexual orientation, political orientation, disability and personal history informing each person s complex identity. Furthermore, these people need to be informed about the importance of seeing color when judging, teaching, and writing the policy about students. In order for ALL students to be successful and graduate from higher learning centers, you have to recognize the individual, not the individual(s). We should impose a new paradigm for both public policy considerations and private personal and institutional practice called illuminated individualism. Illuminated individualism seeks to respect the uniqueness of all persons and communities and thus not to assume that racial identity or country of origin, as in the case of non citizens seeking to become residents, automatically tells us what we need to know about a person and their background while yet acknowledging the general truth that to be white, a person of color, indigenous, or an immigrant continues to have meaning in the United ...
