Specific Heat and Latent Heat
Objectives:
The purpose of this lab was to determine the specific heat of a metal as well as the heat of fusion of
ice.
Apparatus: The equipment used in the experiment include: metal cylinder, beaker, triple beam balance,
Styrofoam cup, thermometer and a hot plate.
Theory
The energy required to increase the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1K is referred to as specific
heat, whose SI unit is J/ (kg. K). The specific heat of water, CH2O is 1.000cal / (g. OC) which
equivalent to 4186 J / (kg. K). Consider a cup with mass m, holding water of mass mH2O with initial
temperature of Ti. When a hot metal block of mass ms at 1000C is ... Show more content on

The ice was added continuously until the temperature of the water bath dropped to 100C. The final
temperature, Tf was then measured after the ice had melted completely. The latent heat of fusion of ice
was then computed.
Results
Block number = 13
Mass of Block, ms = 83.3g
Mass of Cup = 5.5g
Measured Temp. of Boiling Water = 99.6 C
CH2O = 1.000cal / (g. OC) = 4186 J / (kg. K).
Table 1: Results for specific heat
Specific Heat of Sample cgs units SI units
Trial # Mass of H2O Initial Temp. Final Temp. cs (cal / (g 0c)) cs (J / (kg 0C))
1 91.8 21.0 C 32.9 C 0.1954 817.94
2 91.8 21.2 C 33.2 C 0.1979 828.41
Average cs = 0.1967 cal / (g 0c)
Average cs = 823.17 J / (kg 0C)
Calculations:
Specific heat of a metal, cs = mH2O cH2O (Tf Ti) / ms (100oc Tf)
For Trial 1: cs = 91.8g × 1.000 cal. / (g. OC) (32.9 21.0) OC / 83.3 (100oc 32.9) OC
= 1092.42 / 5589.43 = 0.1954 cal / (g 0c)
Converting to SI units:
0.1954 cal / (g 0c) × (4186 J / (kg. K). / 1.000cal / (g. OC)) = 817.94 J / kg 0C
For Trial 2: cs = 91.8g × 1.000 cal. / (g. OC) (33.2 21.2) OC / 83.3 (100oc 33.2) OC
= 1101.6 / 5564.44 = 0.1979 cal / (g 0c)
Converting to SI units:
0.1979 cal / (g 0c) × (4186 J / (kg. K). / 1.000cal / (g. OC)) = 828.41J / (kg 0C)
Average cs in cgs units = (0.1954 + 0.1979) = 0.1967 cal / (g 0c)
Average cs in SI units = (817.94+ 828.41) = 823.17 J / kg 0C

Speech On Zora Neale Hrston
eneral purpose: To inform
Specific Purpose: To inform the audience about how influential Zora Neale Hurston was.
Thesis/Central Idea: The three specific things about Zora Neale Hurston that makes her
influential/admirable include being a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, an anthropologist, and an
American writer regarding folklore.
Introduction
I. (Attention Getter) Quote by Zora Neale Hurston about Harlem Renaissance It would be against all
nature for all the Negroes to be either at the bottom, top, or in between. We will go where the internal
drive carries us like everybody else. It is up to the individual.
II. (Relevancy Statement) One of the reasons Zora Neale Hurston is an influential person was because
of her works at the time of the Harlem Renaissance. This quote combines both the reawakening of
creativity and the ambitious push for others to put forth their own creative works.
III. (Credibility Statement) In 1926, Zora and a collection of other young writers including Langston
Hughes and Wallace Thurman produced a literary magazine called Fire!! This showcased the art of the
Harlem Renaissance. Their Eyes Were Watching God was written by Zora during her field trip to Haiti
and is now regarded as a classic African American feminist text. Their Eyes Were Watching God
rejects assimilating White America s cultural standards, but instead celebrated African American
communities.

Communication Part II-FEMA
Disasters are human made or natural and occur sudden and unexpected. As disasters cannot be
prevented, government has to be prepared for any emergency situation. According to Stanhope and
Lancaster (2014), there are four stages in the disaster management: Prevention, Preparedness,
Response and Recovery. According to Stanhope and Lancaster (2014, p 250), public health
professionals study disaster effects on populations while American Red Cross work with local and
other communities in preparedness, response and recovery phase of disaster.

FEMA s mission is to support all citizens and first responders to that as a country we cooperate to

President Jimmy Carter signed the FEMA order to protect and serve American people (FEMA, 2016).
Even though, every disaster has its own plan and consequences, FEMA does it well to support and
protect American people. From 1803, first fire disaster in New Hampshire, FEMA provides assistance
for hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and other natural and manmade disasters. FEMA works with many
agencies for disaster management. Once a federal emergency has been declared, the National
Response Framework (NRF) take effect to assist specific needs from disaster with focuses on response
and short term recovery (Stanhope Lancaster 2014, p 256). National Incident Management System
(NIMS) provides a proactive approach to guide all departments to reduce loss of life and property and
harm to environment (Stanhope Lancaster 2014, p 256). Since 2003, FEMA became part of U.S.

Being Selfless
American Guru is a reality show where two final contestants will go against each other to find the
most divine. To determine the winner, we will have to take a close look into which important lessons
each figure has to teach mainstream U.S. society. After much consideration, this year s top two final
contestants are Krishna and Rama. As a judge, I will pay attention to our course texts for Hinduism to
determine who is more divine and has more important lesson to teach. For Krishna, I will pay
attention to the short play of John Stratton Hawley The Butter Thief of Swami Ramsvarup and from

So our winner of this show should be someone who can show the mainstream U.S. society the
positives of dharma.
In The Ramayana, Rama follows his dharma of being a son and teaches selflessness when he obeys
his parents to sacrifice the crown of the king and the decision of being exiled. Initially, Rama s father
Dasaratha wanted to crown Rama as the king of his kingdom (Narayan 34). After Rama s stepmother,
Kaikeyi, finds out she is angry that her husband chose Rama over her son Bharatha (Narayan 41). She
decides to take advantage of Dasaratha and forces him to let Bharatha become the king and have
Rama exiled to the forest for fourteen years (Narayan 43). This is when we can see the selflessness in
Rama and how important his dharma is to him. When told of this decision, Rama felt no hesitation to
obey his father and step mother. In Narayan s novel, Rama states, I will carry out his wishes without
question. Mother, be assured that I will not shirk. I have no interest in kingship, . . . and no aversion to
a forest existence (45). Rama has no problem with not being crowned and getting exiled because that
is what his parents want. Along with that, he has no problem going away from his family to live in a
forest. As their son, his dharma is to respect his parents decision without any questioning. Rama
teaches mainstream U.S. society to be more concerned with the needs and wishes of others, especially
parents. Parents will

Stealing in the Workplace Essay
Blu Silberhorn Issue Paper Case Studies in Ethics and Law November, 08 2009 Is stealing becoming
more acceptable in the workplace? Generally, when people think of stealing or theft they are referring
to the act of physically taking property from someone else. In reality there are many different ways
that an employee can steal from an organization, and I have seen three different ways in my short
career. The basic definition of theft is the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods or
property of another, and this is one way in which people can take away from an organization. The
most common way for people to steal from an organization is theft of time, and this includes; taking
extra time on breaks and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Normally, we would work through tasks as they appeared on the list which allowed us to have
different jobs every night, so this wasn t routine for this employee. This is completely wrong in many
different ways, because not only was the employee stealing the product, he was also not old enough to
purchase or drink alcohol. Since, I was the person put in charge of the store that night I had to decide
what to do in this particular situation. There are a few different ways to handle this situation. I could
have called the police and let them handle it, but to my knowledge this was the employee s first time
stealing anything from the store. I don t think the employee needed to be fined or charged for making
a small mistake. I think that most people would have told upper management and let them handle the
punishment, but this was a good employee and I didn t want to look like that bad guy. I confronted the
employee about the issue and explained that it is not right to stealing from the store. I explained that
he was putting me in a tough position, but I wasn t going to tell management unless it happens again. I
don t think that he ever tried to steal anything after that night. Being upfront with him and letting him
know what the consequences would be got my message across. Theft is a big problem in retail
locations; in my case there are only a few people that are working in a large store, so it

Are Krishna, from the Bhagavad Gita, and Rama, from the Ramayana, really that different from each
other?
The Bhagavad Gita is a story about the conversation between Arjuna and Krishna when Arjuna is
questioning if he should fight in a war. While The Ramayana is about the life of Rama during his exile
and going back to his kingdom. Although these two stories are very different, they do include some
similarities. For example, both stories have characters that are avatars of Vishnu, Krishna and Rama.
The stories also revolve around the theme of dharma and how important it ... Show more content on

In the book it states, . . . Evil would still cling to us when we d killed these men her, with their bows
drawn (p12: 36). This shows that he is concerned about bad karma. After Arjuna tells Krishna his
reasons why he does not want to fight, Krishna begins to tell him it is his dharma to fight in this war.
He states, Do not become a cowardly eunuch, Son of Pritha; this is not fitting for you. Let go of this
lowly weakness of the heart and stand up, Scorcher of the Enemy! (p16: 3). Krishna is telling Arjuna
being a warrior is what he was born to do and a warrior should never be weak. Krishna also says,
Death is fixed for those who are born, and birth is fixed for those who die; since such an end is certain,
you should not grieve (p23: 27). He is basically telling Arjuna the way of life, so he should not be
worried since this is the cycle of life. Krishna proceeds to tell Arjuna this is his dharma as a warrior.
He suggests, If you will not engage this fight for the sake of dharma, you will have shunned your own
dharma and good name, and shall cause harm (p25: 33). Meaning if Arjuna believes he should not
fight because of what he thinks is his dharma, he will destroy his real dharma of being a warrior and
will cause himself bad karma. Krishna then talks about yoga in action. Krishna says, The person who
has practiced yoga, restraining all these senses, should sit, with me as a pinnacle;... (p32: 61). This

September 11th, 2001 What happened on September 11th, 2001? A day that will be remembered and

nearly 3,000 people were killed in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City (

All of these attacks and attempts and actions were addressed through the existing criminal justice
system. Under that legal architecture, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and Title III of the
Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act, as well as a host of other statutes and regulations,
governed domestic intelligence collection. Exchange of information collected by foreign and domestic
agencies was dedicated by a strict set of rules that was interpreted as forbidding pure intelligence
information from being involved with law enforcement purposes, and conversely made it difficult to
involve criminal justice derived information with other agencies. When terrorists were arrested either
in the United States or abroad, they were accorded the treatment of any other criminal defendant, also
including receiving warnings about the right to silence, and a full blown criminal jury trial (FAQ about

The Civilization Of The Mayan Civilizations In Central...
The Mayan civilization is very complex. The Mayans were an ancient people who lived throughout
Central America from 1800 B.C. to 900 A.D. This was the time when the cities were abandoned. The
term, Mayans, also refers to the living descendants of the ancient civilization who now live in Mexico,
Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and even California. They spoke, and some still speak;
Yucatec, Quiché, Kekchi, and Mopan.
The ancient Maya civilization could be categorized into a few simple sections, the religion, the
advancements in math and science, and the daily life. Their religion consisted of many things like
deities, religious services, calendars, priests, temples, and so much more. The Mayan religion was
integrated into every single aspect of Mayan life. It even affected the name of their children. The
Mayans made most of their decisions based on the priests.
The priests were categorized into five major categories. The ahuacan were the high priests. The
chilans were the prophets who were in charge of interpreting the future. Next, were the nacons and
chacs, their major job was to aid the ahuacan with sacrifices. The ahmen, they were devoted to prayer,
much like a shaman.
There were many rituals to heal, to talk to the gods, to improve crops, to bless marriages, and to bless
kings. Many rituals involved bloodletting, sacrificing animals, or more widely known, humans. People
were sacrificed for important events such as the dedicating of a king.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Youth Participation In...
The sport of tennis is often thought of as a country club sport limited only to the wealthy and elite.
Due to its financial requirements, people who are less fortunate are often denied opportunities to play.
Substantial expenses that accumulate from lessons, equipment, and membership fees deter potential
players from participating. Inner city youth are underrepresented due to lack of attainable resources
and programs. Aside from financial limitations, many junior athletes favor the characteristics of team
sports such as football, soccer, and basketball over the independence and isolation of an individual
sport like tennis. Not to mention, team sports are often far less costly. Due to these drawbacks and
perceptions, prospective junior tennis athletes are often more inclined to take the route of a different
sport. I believe that youth participation in tennis is deteriorating. As an avid tennis player and advocate
for the sport, I identify this as a major problem. Discovering practical methods that introduce and
attract younger players to tennis is crucial in expanding participation. Broadening accessibility to
tennis, demonstrating its positive values, and targeting specific ethnic and social groups are worthy
solutions in reversing the negative trend. Inner city kids are some who have the most difficulty
becoming involved in tennis. A large majority of these kids don t come from an economic background
capable of providing expenses required for participation in the sport. Talented underprivileged kids
may never have the opportunity to go to a country club and take lessons. More often than not, urban
areas lack the facilities and money to provide tennis programs for their kids. This economic deficit
becomes a major challenge for impoverished kids who want to learn tennis. As a result, inner city
youth neglect even the thought of playing tennis, and become underrepresented as a part of the junior
tennis community. By finding a way to give the inner city kids of poorer, urban areas the opportunities
to take part in tennis, we can expect to see participation of youth rise. One practical method to
encourage the involvement of inner city kids is to implement tennis programs in public schools. By

Boston Marathon Bombing Analysis
The bombing of the Boston Marathon is one of the least deadly terrorist attacks against our county, but
has brought to light many lessons that need to be learned. The Boston Marathon Bombing took place
on April 15, 2013 at 1449 hours. Two men planted bombs near the finish line of the event which killed
three spectators and wounded 260 others. The bombs were pressure cooker bombs packed with
shrapnel and other materials hidden in backpacks that were maliciously placed amidst the crowd
(History.com Staff, 2014). Technology that was involved was the Alpha Medical Tent which was
located in Copley Square just beyond the finish line. This tent had enhanced medical capabilities to
help to provide relief to marathon runners after race limiting the burden on local hospitals, and is
staffed by medical professional who volunteer their time to support race. With this Tent in place it
already had sixteen ambulances staged in the event it could not medically care for runners. After the

Insider s Theory Of Religion
Religion Explained has a bold title for a bold claim. Pascal Boyer believes he has solved why religion
is what it is, and why it came into existence. He faces challenges by leaving gaps in his argument.
Rituals and belief are left unexplainable, leaving room for the criticism of an insider v. outsider
situation. Yet, even with these gaps, he states that religion is simply a byproduct of mental inference
system. In the first paper, I proposed how I believe one should classify what religion is, and in this

outsider issue is a problem that has come up in every session of this class. Smith could see that the
outsider could only get into half of his proposal for sure (tradition), and only study the acts of faith not
faith itself. In the WPR reenactment, there were constant battles between practitioners being outsiders
to other religions. A complete outsider, a scholar, was able to bring almost unanimous unity to the
parliament, but at the cost of watering down some of the faiths. In the real WPR, they came to the
consensus of no consensus where Richard Seager argues plurality develops in that conclusion. Boyer,
on the other hand, believes an outsider will find that quite a lot of what [people] do and think can be
observed outside if these groups. He then goes on to say that groups of people have many norms and
practices that are specific to that group. Religion can provide (and has provided) terms to create
groups, like he is referring to. How can one understand and observe what people, who practice the
religion, cannot explain? This is where he believes that by examining the brain, even an outsider can
see into a religious person s reason, and outsiders can come up with explanations of why that the

Persuasive Speech On Overfishing
Today I will be talking about over fishing, Over Fishing is the over exploitation of fish to below
acceptable levels. This can occur in most bodies of water, such as the oceans, rivers, lakes and even
ponds. In over fishing we are going to be talking about shark finning, Shark finning is the practice of
slicing off the shark s fins while the shark is still alive and throwing the rest of its body back into the
ocean where it can take days to die what must be an agonizing death. Shark finning is very common in
Asia as it is a delicacy and a prime ingredient in shark fin soup.
Overfishing is very bad problem that is occurring more and more in the world today. The core of
overfishing comes from commercial fishing. Commercial fishing is the activity of catching fish and
other seafood for commercial profit. The reasons for overfishing vary, but the main reason for
overfishing is that the more fish equals the more profit. Over fishing is also very bad for the
environment, it has allot of bad affects, one of these bad affects are the destruction of the environment.

The Literacy Education Is Not A New Issue
There is a prevalence of underprepared students entering postsecondary education. The College Board
(2013) reports as many as 57% of students completing the SAT exams did not meet the benchmark for
college level coursework; this figure may present low, as it does not necessarily include the countless
students who do not attempt the test, as they are planning on attending postsecondary schools not
requiring these scores for admissions or not planning on continuing their education after high school.
Individuals might point fingers at secondary education and blame them for not preparing the college
freshman adequately, but unfortunately, there are a myriad of influences that generate this educational
skills gap.

The opportunity exists to place the liability of underprepared students on secondary education;
concentrating on a flurry of mitigating factors existing within secondary education. Learners may
arrive underprepared because they had not planned to attend a postsecondary school; possibly, a high
school college track was not studied. Students may have originated from underprivileged school
districts and communities, and may not have had the advantages of solid school budgets, staff, or
technology. First generation students may also prove to be underprepared, as they exhibit uncertainty
as to what is required for college preparation. Inappropriate high school promotion or an academic
skill gap demonstrates another pool of students presenting as underprepared. Subsequently, students
may have suffered a delay between initial knowledge acquirement and postsecondary enrollment;
recognized when a required high school course may have concluded in the junior year with over a year
break in preparation. Realistically, there are numerous causes we can attribute to students arriving on
campus underprepared. The true motivation to designating fault is to vitalize change; to design
programs, at both the secondary and postsecondary levels, to prepare students to be ready to learn and
develop at a college level.

Wheeling Symphony Orchestra
I recently attended the opening night of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra at the Capitol Theatre in
downtown Wheeling. The experience of seeing a live orchestra for the first time was very unique and
pleasant to me. The feel and atmosphere was much different from what you would experience at a
country or hip hop concert. The venue was very quiet and respectful, no one was talking or playing
around on their cell phones. Whereas my prior concert experiences had consisted of musicians aiming
to be as loud and energetic as possible to invoke excitement in the audience, the orchestra put out a
different feel for the audience. The orchestra aimed to invoke and emotional and appreciative response
from the audience. The orchestra opened with Rossini s La Gazza Ladra Overture. This piece was

instruments were played to the best of my memory. I think I enjoyed this piece the most because I was
able to focus on the cellist and really see just how much passion she had through the way she played
each line. Following a short intermission, the whole orchestra was present for Shostakovich s Fifth

took breaks every once in awhile for a few short seconds which I did not expect. The symphony had a
little bit of everything in terms of music and instrumentation. Some parts were sad, some dramatic,
and some energetic. At times, it almost felt to me as if the music was telling a story. The ending was

Making A Good Business Agreement
In creating a good business agreement being familiar with the basics of contract formation is
important so that as a business owner I can at least have a productive conversation with my lawyer on
concepts that are important to the business and how I can best get those items into the contract while
protecting my own interest. First, it s important to understand does this agreement fall under Article 2
of the UCC or common law contracts. Because this for a service within the year, this would probably
fall under common law agreements. This has an impact on how the deal needs to be structured and
outlined, and how to make modifications. Second, in order to best protect my firm, any agreements
should be written out and formally communicated. In general, in order to have an enforceable
contract, it must be formed with all four components. Currently we have been in the process of
negotiating the possible service, but once I am ready to formally send out an offer I would need to
understand my role as the offeree, and ensure that my offer is complete and accurate before sending
the offer or it may be difficult to change terms once the offer has been sent. I would make sure my
agreement clearly states communication means so that a counter offer or acceptance is clear. In the
agreement I should clearly define the payment terms and when to receive the payment for the services.
Most importantly on terms is what exactly the services are to be rendered. I would need to make sure

Genesis 1 Vs. Genesis
For thousands of years, people have read and examined the stories of creation and Genesis from the
Hebrew Bible. Genesis contains two different stories of creation. These are commonly known as
Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 which contain very similar details but in different orders. Genesis 1 begins
with the creation of heaven and earth while Genesis 2 begins with the creation of man, Adam. Both
these stories have immense importance. However, what would be different if there was only version of
events? If there was only one version of creation that could be published, Genesis 1 would be best
because of the series of events, man and woman being created at the same time, and the similarity to
the secular view of creation.

Golden Fleece And Revenge In Medea By Medea
Euripides Medea is a tale that hinges upon crime, punishment, and revenge. Jason, Medea s husband,
whom she helped rise to power and fame through the discovery of the Golden Fleece, has decided to
abandon his wife in favor of a woman who will benefit his social position. Medea has given up
everything to help her husband be powerful and is, of course, very angry that he betrayed her so easily.
Prior to Medea and Jason s return to Corinth, Jason s father had died, and his uncle Pelias sat, without
right, on the throne. Desperate to help her husband, Medea convinced Pelias daughters that she knew a
way to restore the old king s youth. He would have to be killed, cut into pieces, and then put together
and restored to youth by Medea s magic. The unwitting daughters did as Medea asked, but the
sorceress then explained that she couldn t really bring Pelias back to life. Unfortunately, rather than
winning Jason his throne back, this move forced Jason, Medea, and their children into exile and to
find refuge in Corinth. The action of the play begins here soon after Medea learns of Jason s deceit
and betrayal.
This epic begins with Medea s Nurse speaking of the sorrows facing Medea s family. Eventually, the
Nurse is joined by the Tutor and Medea s children, and the pain and anguish Medea is feeling from
Jason s betrayal are introduced, as well as the imminent danger her children are in. The Nurse explains
to the Tutor that she fears for everyone s safety, as she knows of the

He is self aware and witnesses the struggles that people like him go through every day in their lives of

the story. Most of the anxiety is caused by the fact that he cannot leave his neighborhood, because of
possible fears of the outcome once he is in the outside world. The pool is another great setting as it is
described in a way that is like the neighborhood where the Yunior lives, The water feels good... while
everything above me is loud and bright, everything below is whispers... this quote coincides with the
fact that the Yunior is trapped, but he d rather stay below than come up and see the outcome of him

drowning in his life without a career or future.
At times, one can wonder what drives a person not to want more from life. Yunior is an unmotivated
young man, who appears to not have much going for him. He does not have people who encourage
him to work hard, or do something better with his life. The people he surrounds himself with are not
of good influence on him. Me and Beto used to steal like mad from these places, two, three hundred

Propelled by the civil rights movement of the 1960s and to counteract a national policy of segregation

violent and nonviolent disorders of the late 1960s were the catalyst that convinced military leaders that
race relations education must be provided to every member of the Armed Forces. An inter service task

have occurred, moving the Army s EO program from a strictly educational and training initiative to a
multifaceted management program with clear goals and objectives. These goals and objectives are also
an integral part of human relations and are nurtured and developed through a professional military
education system. The concept of the EO program is to formulate, direct, and sustain a comprehensive

The Haunting Of Hill House Essay
The Necessity of a Gothic setting
In a gothic novel or story, the setting is exclusive to the plot. If a gothic story doesn t have a perfect
setting, the plot will not be as exciting to the reader. The setting needs to have dark elements,
horrifying twists, and turns to drive the story. In The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson,
Jackson exemplifies how a setting should be in a gothic novel. She uses modern psychology and old
ghost stories. These elements entice the reader to ponder what is real and what is not.

taking place in the house (blood on the clothes, blood on/in the walls, mysterious voices calling out
and children laughing) , ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reader experiences this emotion while reading. Hill House gives off these feelings because of all
the deaths that have happened there. Many young people died in Hill House. The tomb in Hill House
has a cold spot. If you put your hand there for a second it will become numb. This was shown in the
story when Luke tested the cold spot with his hand, Luke, inside the nursery doorway, could hold one
end of the tape until his hand came into the cold spot, and then his fingers lost strength and relaxed
helplessly. Another part that adds to the uneasiness of the house is Hugh Crain. No one knows what
happened to him. The book says he turns into a recluse. Reading into this detail, does that mean he
turns into the house and becomes a part of the house? Jackson doesn t tell the reader that. Hugh Crain
s tragedy definitely adds to the emptiness and sadness of the house. The same can be said when
Eleanor meets her end. As a character of the story her life was empty and meaningless. She was
always told what to do and what not to do. Eleanor was an innocent. So naturally when she died it was
tragic and sad. She also seemed to become a part of Hill

Povertyin the World
Poverty evokes various definitions depending on the audience and perhaps the purpose or context that
it is used. Limiting the definition of poverty to a value judgment is of little use in terms of agreeing on
a definition for the purpose of comparison and measurement between groups (Sen 1979, p.285). A
clear definition of poverty supports and indicates the process for measurement, and as such would also
assist in determining the focus and approach for development (Clark 2012; Ruggeri, Saith Stewart
2006, p.19). In reviewing Oxfam Australia s (Oxfam) Close the Gap campaign, it is necessary to
identify the approach that is taken in defining poverty in order to gauge the scope of the project, the
development of the approach used, and to quantify the change that occurs.
Oxfam itself has identified Close the Gap as a human rights campaign that aims to close the life
expectancy health gap of 10 17 years for Aboriginal and Torres Strait within a generation (Holland
2014, p.46). Vizard in her exploration of Sen s capability approach (2005, p.24), emphasises the
marriage of capabilities with human rights, citing poverty as one of the key exclusions to fundamental
freedoms and human rights, thus expanding the definition of poverty into a multidimensional one.
Health is one of the dimensions included in the rights approach, which suggests that the abuses of
human rights result in poverty and are also a result of poverty (OHCHR 2006, p.16). Along with a

After reading the essay written by Jesus Villahermosa I believe his thesis statement is Given my
extensive experience dealing with violence in the workplace and at schools and colleges, I do not
think professors and administrators, let alone students, should carry guns . In his second paragraph, he
lays out reason as to why he feels this way and shows that he can be considered an expert in firearm
safety. Giving information into his background reinforces his position and add to his argument against
arming people on college campuses. Some may be surprised that he is against having armed
professors and students on campus because of his background. However, I am not surprised that he is
strongly against having firearm toting professors, administrators and students throughout campuses.
He is properly trained, experienced with firearm safety and marksmanship which in turn gives him

A Rationale of the Outline Scheme of Work for Key Stage 3
A rationale of the outline scheme of work for Key Stage 3
Planning is a key part of teaching. Without a coherent plan lessons may lack structure and direction.
Long and medium term planning are an important part of this and in this rationale I hope to
demonstrate that my planning does indeed have all of these qualities.
The first element to be considered when rationalising this scheme of work is whether or not it meets
the needs of Key Stage 3 pupils. I believe that it does because the attainment focus is all within Key
Stage 3. However, this is only the very simplest level by which we can measure this criterion. Firstly,
we can also measure it by matching the scheme of work to the programme of study. If we look at this
we can see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So for example, in the topic about the good life pupils will study Buddhist monks and nuns. In this
way I think the scheme of work as greater coherence and pupils will be able to see clear reasons for
study topics.
At this point I think it would be a good idea to return to some of the philosophy behind the scheme of
work. Mainly it is thematic in approach. This is where religions are sub divided into categories and
taught like this. For example, festivals, or Holy Books may be used as themes to teach across the
religions. One strength of the thematic approach is that it points to similarities between religions and I
think that this is where most value in RE comes from. However, these similarities are often far too
superficial and can even be slightly arbitrary . For example, some schools may teach spring festivals
when the similarities between these festivals are not the time of year at which they are held but
something far more consequential. If this approach could move past this problem it would be far more
useful. Of course, we must remember that, once again this is only how the approach is used rather than
the approach itself that causes the problem. I have tried to avoid this problem in my scheme of work
by choosing topics that point to deeper similarities such as the idea of duty or the good life. Another
problem that I have tried to avoid is confusing pupils with lots of

The Socio Cultural Measurements Of Environment
The socio cultural measurements of environment cover traditions, ways of life, and qualities that
characters the public in which the firm works or to say macro environment. Demography is one of
numerous variables that plays significant role to impact capacity of organization to run business to
function within society along maintaining socio cultural factor. Demography is the investigation of
human populaces in terms of size, density, location, age, gender, race, occupation and different
measurements. Changes in the world demographic environment have major implication for business.
The total population rate is developing at an unstable rate that will soon surpass nourishment supply
and capacity to enough administration. Variation in demographics has numerous potential outcomes
for business in sugar industry. As population changes, the interest for items and administrations
likewise changes. For instance, decrease in populace comes about decrement of demand and
utilization of item and henceforth ultimately decreases the business.
From above chart and bar graph, we can observe the simultaneous relationship between population
and sugar production. The more population increased, the more production of sugarcane level is also
high and vice versa. Also, it is further affected by the sub components of demographic factors which is
shown in following chart.
Age, Gender, education, Health and Ethnicity, these all factors cover equal concern for demand and

potassium permanganate and 20 mL of boiling water, which were placed in a separate 250 mL beaker,
which was placed on a slowly heating hot plate (in order to keep the solution as warm as possible, but

by a very distinct purple color, and a small amount of precipitate could be observed at the bottom of
the beaker. Once the p acetotoluidide solution had reached a gentle boil, it was vigorously stirred with

The General Theory Of Crime Essay
Main Body As the nineties began, the general theory of crime became the most prominent
criminological theory ever proposed; furthermore, it is empirically recognized as the primary
determinant in deviant and criminal behaviors. Known also as the self control theory, the general
theory of crime can most simply be defined as the absence or lack of self control that an individual
possesses, which in turn may lead them to commit unusual and or unlawful deeds. Authored by
educator Michael R. Gottfredson and sociologist Travis Hirschi, A General Theory of Crime (1990)
essentially dumbed down every theory of crime into two words, self control. The widely accepted
book holds that low self control is the main reason that a person initiates all crimes, ranging from
murder and rape to burglary and embezzlement. Gottfredson and Hirschi also highlighted, in A
General Theory of Crime (1990), that low self control correlates with personal impulsivity. This
impulsive attitude leads individuals to become insensitive to deviant behaviors such as smoking,
drinking, illicit sex, and gambling (p. 90). The extreme simplicity, yet accuracy, of Gottfredson s and
Hirschi s general theory of crime (self control theory), make it the most empirically supported theory
of criminal conduct, as well as deviant acts. First off, there have been ample amounts of disapproval in
relation to the general theory of crime, because many scholars feel that Gottfredson and Hirschi

During 2011 significant industrial relation events took place in Australia. One significant event that
was widely reported in the media and according to Catanzartiti and Kane (2012) captured the interest
of the mainstream press more than any other case during 2011 , was the Qantas Airways Limited
(Qantas) dispute .
The Qantas dispute involved varying parties. These parties included Qantas employees and their
representing unions, Qantas Management, the Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills Jobs and
Workplace Relations and Fair Work Australia
Qantas employees consisted of pilots represented by the AIPA (Australian and International Pilots
Association), ground staff represented by the TWU (Transport Workers ... Show more content on

Representing unions attempted to ensure job security and secure bettered working conditions. The
bargaining process was criticised for taking too long, as AIPA and ALAE negotiations began in August
2010, and then in 2011 TWU had began bargaining . (Brigden, 2012).
As a result of no progress in the negotiations, applications to FWA were made to commence protected
industrial action. Subsequently various forms of action was undertaken by the three employee groups.
The unions engaged in overtime bans and ongoing brief work stoppages, which disrupted Qantas
flights regularly and impacted reportedly on the airline commercially (workplace xpress 2011e) (Todd,
2012).
Industrial action conducted by the Engineers included short stoppages, weekend overtime bans, full
shift stoppages and a stop work meeting. The protected action was intermittent, and on some
occasions was not undertaken when scheduled, also, stoppages were managed in order for Qantas to
continue business. (Sangkuhl, 2011)
Conciliation with FWA had also commenced but no advancements had been made (Brigden, 2012).
TWU also conducted short stoppages, and a stop work meeting, and although it would appear that
these were conducted to minimise disruptions this was inevitable as some stoppages were cancelled,
affecting Qantas business.

Women In The Epic Of Gilgamesh And Lysistrata, Calonice...
In the ancient world, views of women were often derogatory, yet some viewed women as intelligent
and powerful. The Epic of Gilgamesh and Lysistrata both display the complex opinions towards
women of the time. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, the characters Shamhat and Ishtar provide the audience
with a biased view towards women, but this work also provides a more positive opinion of women
through Siduri, Utnapishtim s wife, and Aruru. As paralleled in Aristophanes s Lysistrata, Calonice
and Peace represent negative perspectives of women, but this play also portrays women positively
with Lysistrata and Myrrhine. The ancient texts of The Epic of Gilgamesh and Lysistrata
simultaneously depict women as inferior, equal to, and superior to men to represent the complex views
of women that were present during ancient times. The Epic of Gilgamesh renders women as
subordinate to men through the characters Shamhat and Ishtar. In this epic, Shamhat is a prostitute and
must obey men s wishes. As Gilgamesh wants to civilize Enkidu, he tells the hunter, Take with you
Shamhat the harlot, when the wild beasts draw near the water hole, let her strip off her clothing ,
laying bare her charms (103). Although it is a part of Shamhat s job to do what men want, Gilgamesh
speaking about controlling her actions suggests that he believes women should always defer to men.
Furthermore, Gilgamesh insists Enkidu have sex with Shamhat in order for him to become a man
(104). This emphasis on virility

Forest Deforestation Essay
Forest plays an essential role for local livelihood practices and considered as an important source of
national revenue as well. However, in developing countries such as Indonesia, forest degradation has
become at an alarming rate as a result of the over exploitation, unsustainable practices, forest fires,
and non eco friendly development projects in the forested areas like forest conversion into mining and
monoculture plantation. Massive deforestation naturally results in biodiversity losses and in many
places leads to soil erosion, siltation and damage of the forests hydrological functions, thus worsening
food security and compromising forests future economic and environmental attributes [1] and it has
been reported that Indonesia lost more than 6 million hectares of natural forest between 2000 and
2012 [2]. Not only rich in biological resources (10% of the world s remaining flowering plants
species, 12% of mammal species, 16% of reptile species, 25% of fish species and 17% of bird
species), these forests are also home to tens of millions of Indonesian citizens. Many, if not most of
these citizens are indigenous people with culturally rich and diverse customs and traditions [3].
Forest ecosystems provide homes and sources of livelihood for a majority of the indigenous peoples of
Indonesia. Indigenous peoples make significant contributions to the conservation and sustainable
management of forest ecosystems, nevertheless, rapid and growing deforestation rates in Indonesia

Persuasive Essay On The Kneeling Issue
O er the land of the free and the home of the brave? John Stafford Smith said in 1814. This has
become America s top way to show respect to the country. Can you imagine people being disrespectful
during this important moment? Well, whether you believe it or not, the very act has been happening
over and over on America s top sporting fields. Players playing in the NFL have been kneeling during
the national anthem, creating riots in the crowds. Many, many people died for America s song, but yet
people keep on kneeling no matter what people say, even the President! So, how bad is the kneeling
issue? Well, we have to look at why they are doing this disrespectful act in front of thousands of
people. And don t worry, if you don t have a side on this issue, this essay will help you make a
decision. By listening to what fans, players, and NFL management are saying, we can finally take a
side on this important issue. Fans attend sporting events to escape politics. However, players are
booing at kneeling NFL players are clearly disliking the kneeling, according to salon.com.
Nytimes.com states that fans stand up and boo when players kneel during the anthem. Fans come to
get away from politics, not towards it. The fans spend good money to come see these games, and they
do not want to see players being disrespectful. People in the crowds are even making signs that are
telling players to get off the field if they can t stand during the anthem, while others are still

Summary Of Janus By Ann Beattie
The short story, Janus by Ann Beattie is a story that pays great attention to details. Beattie uses
descriptive words to raise the awareness of the reader and point them to certain objects and characters
that later serve as symbolisms in determining the meaning of the story. Although there are many
details that help illustrate the main idea, we can identify three crucial details that perform a central
function in stressing the meaning of the story. The first central detail is the bowl. The opening line to
the story is, The bowl was perfect. The fact that the bowl was mentioned first and not the protagonist,
Andrea, stresses its significance in the story. Throughout the story the bowl is constantly described as
both subtle and noticeable ,

Product Of The Copycat Phenomenon
Copycat Phenomenon The copycat phenomenon is something that has been a major issue for quite
some time. Dictionary.com defines copycat as, a person or thing that copies, imitates, mimics, or
follows the lead of another, as a child who says or does exactly the same as another child. As it
pertains to the phenomenon, anytime a certain crime is committed, the more that it is advertised, the
more likely it will continue to happen and at a higher rate than before. In this paper, we will talk about
the different events that have happened and that have been said to have been a product of the copycat
phenomenon. Different types of the copycat phenomenon include: celebrity suicides, terrorism, and all
sorts of crimes. The first way that the copycat takes storm is in terms of suicides by celebrities. This
phenomenon is one that people have been discussion for some time. This is when a certain celebrity
commits suicides; the number of suicides for some time is increased due to this person committing
suicide. After [a] celebrity suicide, the number of suicide related articles reported surged around 80
times in the week after the suicide compared with the week prior (Hwang, J.S. Lee, W.Y. Lee, Stack,
2014). The reason that celebrity suicides yield such a high rise in others committing suicide is because
that celebrity is much more known than other people. People feel as if they know that particular
person more than they really do because they see their faces/ hear their voices so

Narrative Essay About Moving School
Where have you had a hard time to fit in? What about moving schools? Or rather, moving to a
different part of school. I have been going to Hickman School for six years now, and came in second
grade. Time seemed to fly by as it was already time for middle school. Elementary is one thing, but
middle is another. And for the first day of sixth grade, I was pretty nervous. What would happen on
that unpredictable day?
For one thing, I really didn t know what middle school would be like, I had no idea what to expect.
Would it be easy? Would it be hard? One thing is for sure, elementary is very disparate from middle.
The schedules, the lockers, how long each class is, the homework, etc. I did go to Jumpstart, however,
and met the teachers, got my schedule, some supplies, and my locker. So it gave me a look at what
would be happening in middle school. Jumpstart absolutely also helped me ... Show more content on

I recall waking up that morning with my alarm clock making an annoying chime sound. I suddenly
remembered what day it was.... The first day of middle school! I was sort of nervous, and walking to a
new and different place in Hickman would surely feel strange. I got to school that morning, got out of
the car, got my backpack out, and started walking towards the round green tables by the lockers. This
was it. The first day of sixth grade. That day, the crisp morning air felt fresh, and I didn t know what
this day would bring. When I was in elementary, I used to think that the middle school was extremely
far away. Now, however, I find them much closer together than I used to think they were. When I
started walking towards the middle school campus, the first thing I thought about doing was going to
my locker. My locker had a problem with it closing, so you had to shut it very hard for it to close, or
redo the combination and close it. I also talked to my friend, Lilianna, before the bell

Essay on media avoidance
In my everyday life I use all sorts of media, they range from cable television, Internet, radio, and the
newspaper. For myself media, is the form and technology I use to receive and communicate
information. The different forms of media I was trying to avoid were cable television, the internet and
radio. I figured if I could avoid those things I would be doing well in avoiding most obvious forms of
mass media. What I realized as I began this whole experience this whole experience is that the mass
media is an important if not the most important part of my everyday life. I use it for almost everything
I do and it surrounds me.
On my first day of avoiding the media, which was on a Saturday, my plan going into was not check

The only thing that I could think to do was go and rent a movie. So that s what I did and it worked
beautifully, I watched the movie Man on Fire with Denzel Washington (it is actually a very good
movie). When I finished watching that my roommates insisted on watching MTV (music television if
you didn t know). I did catch a glimpse of that was happening in the world of music (oops). Realizing
that I was straying I decided to go and get another movie from the video store. I got the movie The
Last Samurai with Tom Cruise and watched it, which killed another couple of hours out of my day of
avoiding media. So finally it was 7pm and I had been fairly successful in avoiding most media and I
only had a couple of hours till I could go out to the bars with my friends and then go to bed. For those
last couple of house I decided to spin some records to kill time. It s the only other thing that I do that
does require me to access other forms of mass media. I fortunately made it through my day and out to
the bars, I then came home and went to bed.
On my second day, which on a weekday, I had a slightly easier day of avoiding media due to the fact
that I had to work all day. So I woke up at 7am and checked my e mail out of habit. Shortly after doing
that I realized that I was not supposed to do that (oops). Got to work at 8am and started my day. It was
pretty easy to avoid media all I had

Victorianism Versus Modernism
Matias Gutierrez
Mrs. Smith
World Literature
21 December 2012 OLD*******8
Victorianism in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Modernism in The Metamorphosis
Victorianism is about how the individual could improve the society. They believed that a good
individual could make the society better as a whole and therefore improve life. Victorians focused on
science and the desire for extremely realistic portrayal of life in both literature and art. Some aspects
of Victorian thinking were retained while others were discarded in a new movement called
Modernism. Modernists focus on the individual but have the view that humans are beings without free
will and that they do not look for guidance within them, but instead are driven by ... Show more

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde showed people that being a good person is the best thing
to do for society and for the individual.
The reason Jekyll is a good example to show the Victorian qualities of science exploration and the
effects the individual has on the world is explained by Masao, In this society of respectables Dr. Jekyll
stands out as the very pink of the proprieties (Chap. 1). Although his studies, like those of Faust and
Frankenstein before him, tend toward the mystic and the transcendental (Ch. 10), he still manages to
maintain a considerable scientific reputation. And yet, despite Jekyll s social role in fact, because of it
it is Jekyll who brings for Mr. Hyde. (Masao 470 480) Masao explains why Jekyll underwent his
transformation and how science heavily influenced his thinking to try this experiment. Masao also
explains that science is possible through the well mannered people of the time and their questioning of
ways to improve society. The Modernism Period was about the individual and that the individual
could not really change society. The Modernist literary period was marked by the reactions and
sentiments towards global change and tragedy. The Modernist movement began around 1890 and
lasted to 1945. Now during this time the World Wars wreaked havoc on the most culturally,
technological, and industrialized parts of the world; which caused people to want to create

Essay on Columbus and Indians
Regarding the article, Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress, Dr. Howard Zinn argues that there
is another perspective to consider as to Christopher Columbus adventures. Dr. Howard Zinn s position
is that history books have omissions of slavery, death and innocent bloodshed that accompanied the
adventures of Christopher Columbus. In the following statements Dr. Howard Zinn describes his
perspective; The writer began the history, five hundred years ago, of the European invasion of the
Indian Settlement in the Americas. That beginning, when you read Las Casas even if his figures are
exaggerations (were there 3 million Indians to begin with, as he says or 250,000, as modern historians
calculate) is conquest, slavery, and death. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They were willing to trade everything they owned. They were will built, with good bodies and
handsome features. They would make fine servants.... With fifty men we could subjugate them all and
make them do whatever we want . In this quote, Dr. Zinn gives what he believed to be another
motivation of Columbus, which was the motivation to make the Indians into slaves for monetary gain.
Dr. Zinn believed this to be the motivation of what he termed the Europe of the Renaissance . Dr Zinn
states; theses traits, speaking of the Arawak, did not stand in the Europe of the Renaissance,
dominated as it was by the religion of popes, the government of kings, the frenzy for the money that
marketed Western civilization and its first messenger to the Americas, Christopher Columbus.
Dr. Zinn references numerous accounts of innocent bloodshed, cruelty and the enslavement of Indians
by Columbus and his soldiers from De Las Casa s books prior to Columbus return to Spain. Dr. Zinn
records the following statements from De Las Casa book in which he says; Endless testimonies ...
prove the mild and pacific temperament of the natives. But our work was to exasperate, ravage, kill,
mangle and destroy; small wonder, then, if they tried to kill one of us now and then.... The admiral, it
is true, was blind as those who came after him, and he was so anxious to please the King that he
committed irreparable crimes against the Indians.... To please

So our winner of this show should be someone who can show the mainstream U.S. society the positives of dharma. In The Ramayana, Rama follows his dharma of being a son and teaches selflessness when he obeys his parents to sacrifice the crown of the king and the decision of being exiled. Initially, Rama s father Dasaratha wanted to crown Rama as the king of his kingdom (Narayan 34). After Rama s stepmother, Kaikeyi, finds out she is angry that her husband chose Rama over her son Bharatha (Narayan 41). She decides to take advantage of Dasaratha and forces him to let Bharatha become the king and have Rama exiled to the forest for fourteen years (Narayan 43). This is when we can see the selflessness in Rama and how important his dharma is to him. When told of this decision, Rama felt no hesitation to obey his father and step mother. In Narayan s novel, Rama states, I will carry out his wishes without question. Mother, be assured that I will not shirk. I have no interest in kingship, . . . and no aversion to a forest existence (45). Rama has no problem with not being crowned and getting exiled because that is what his parents want. Along with that, he has no problem going away from his family to live in a forest. As their son, his dharma is to respect his parents decision without any questioning. Generally, when people think of stealing or theft they are referring to the act of physically taking property from someone else. In reality there are many different ways that an employee can steal from an organization, and I have seen three different ways in my short career. The basic definition of theft is the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods or property of another, and this is one way in which people can take away from an organization. Since, I was the person put in charge of the store that night I had to decide what to do in this particular situation. There are a few different ways to handle this situation. I could have called the police and let them handle it, but to my knowledge this was the employee s first time stealing anything from the store. I don t think the employee needed to be fined or charged for making a small mistake. I think that most people would have told upper management and let them handle the punishment, but this was a good employee and I didn t want to look like that bad guy. I confronted the employee about the issue and explained that it is not right to stealing from the store. I explained that he was putting me in a tough position, but I wasn t going to tell management unless it happens again. I don t think that he ever tried to steal anything after that night. Being upfront with him and letting him know what the consequences would be got my message across. He states, Do not become a cowardly eunuch, Son of Pritha; this is not fitting for you. Let go of this lowly weakness of the heart and stand up, Scorcher of the Enemy! (p16: 3). Krishna is telling Arjuna being a warrior is what he was born to do and a warrior should never be weak. Krishna also says, Death is fixed for those who are born, and birth is fixed for those who die; since such an end is certain, you should not grieve (p23: 27). He is basically telling Arjuna the way of life, so he should not be worried since this is the cycle of life. Krishna proceeds to tell Arjuna this is his dharma as a warrior. He suggests, If you will not engage this fight for the sake of dharma, you will have shunned your own dharma and good name, and shall cause harm (p25: 33). Meaning if Arjuna believes he should not fight because of what he thinks is his dharma, he will destroy his real dharma of being a warrior and will cause himself bad karma. • 14. The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Youth Participation In... The sport of tennis is often thought of as a country club sport limited only to the wealthy and elite. Due to its financial requirements, people who are less fortunate are often denied opportunities to play. Substantial expenses that accumulate from lessons, equipment, and membership fees deter potential players from participating. Inner city youth are underrepresented due to lack of attainable resources and programs. Aside from financial limitations, many junior athletes favor the characteristics of team sports such as football, soccer, and basketball over the independence and isolation of an individual sport like tennis. Not to mention, team sports are often far less costly. Due to these drawbacks and perceptions, prospective junior tennis athletes are often more inclined to take the route of a different sport. I believe that youth participation in tennis is deteriorating. As an avid tennis player and advocate for the sport, I identify this as a major problem. Discovering practical methods that introduce and attract younger players to tennis is crucial in expanding participation. Broadening accessibility to tennis, demonstrating its positive values, and targeting specific ethnic and social groups are worthy solutions in reversing the negative trend. Inner city kids are some who have the most difficulty becoming involved in tennis. A large majority of these kids don t come from an economic background capable of providing expenses required for participation in the sport. Talented underprivileged kids may never have the opportunity to go to a country club and take lessons. More often than not, urban areas lack the facilities and money to provide tennis programs for their kids. This economic deficit becomes a major challenge for impoverished kids who want to learn tennis. As a result, inner city youth neglect even the thought of playing tennis, and become underrepresented as a part of the junior tennis community. Limiting the definition of poverty to a value judgment is of little use in terms of agreeing on a definition for the purpose of comparison and measurement between groups (Sen 1979, p.285). A clear definition of poverty supports and indicates the process for measurement, and as such would also assist in determining the focus and approach for development (Clark 2012; Ruggeri, Saith Stewart 2006, p.19). In reviewing Oxfam Australia s (Oxfam) Close the Gap campaign, it is necessary to identify the approach that is taken in defining poverty in order to gauge the scope of the project, the development of the approach used, and to quantify the change that occurs. Oxfam itself has identified Close the Gap as a human rights campaign that aims to close the life expectancy health gap of 10 17 years for Aboriginal and Torres Strait within a generation (Holland 2014, p.46). Vizard in her exploration of Sen s capability approach (2005, p.24), emphasises the marriage of capabilities with human rights, citing poverty as one of the key exclusions to fundamental freedoms and human rights, thus expanding the definition of poverty into a multidimensional one. One strength of the thematic approach is that it points to similarities between religions and I think that this is where most value in RE comes from. • 36. Separation Of P-Acetamidobenzoic Acid The objective of this procedure is to produce a sample of p acetamidobenzoic acid from the oxidation of p acetotoluidide with potassium permanganate. Procedure Part A Preparation of p Acetamidobenzoic Acid In a 250 mL Erlenmeyer Flask, 5 g (0.02 mol) of magnesium sulfate crystals were mixed with 1.9 g (0.013 mol) of p acetotoluidide in 125 mL of de ionized water. The resulting solution was placed on a hot plate and was steadily boiled until the solution reached 85°C, or until the solution reached a gentle boil (it was emphasized that the solution should be heated slowly, in order to maximize the efficiency of the reaction). While this was occurring, a separate solution was prepared from 5.1 g (0.032 mol) of potassium permanganate and 20 mL of boiling water, which were placed in a separate 250 mL beaker, which was placed on a slowly heating hot plate (in order to keep the solution as warm as possible, but not warm enough that the water could evaporate). It was observed that this solution was characterized by a very distinct purple color, and a small amount of precipitate could be observed at the bottom of the beaker. Once the p acetotoluidide solution had reached a gentle boil, it was vigorously stirred with a stirring rod, and every so often (about every 5 minutes) a small portion of the potassium permanganate solution was added to the solution; at this point, it was emphasized that the potassium permanganate solution, or the oxidizing agent, should be added in small ... Da Vinci, most well known for his artistry, was infatuated with the human anatomy. He produced a book titled On the Human Figure that entailed a sequence of drawings, mainly of the skull. Though through writing the book he became even more curious about the inter workings of our bodies. So, this is where I would go given the chance to travel through time. At a minimum just being in the room when his endeavors into science really began would have been breath taking, and something never forgotten. When imagining it, of course there is no way of knowing, I picture a thick blanket of snow on the ground, and even more flurries in the air as da Vinci walked in to begin dissection that day in Florence. • 39. The General Theory Of Crime Essay Main Body As the nineties began, the general theory of crime became the most prominent criminological theory ever proposed; furthermore, it is empirically recognized as the primary determinant in deviant and criminal behaviors. Known also as the self control theory, the general theory of crime can most simply be defined as the absence or lack of self control that an individual possesses, which in turn may lead them to commit unusual and or unlawful deeds. Authored by educator Michael R. Gottfredson and sociologist Travis Hirschi, A General Theory of Crime (1990) essentially dumbed down every theory of crime into two words, self control. The widely accepted book holds that low self control is the main reason that a person initiates all crimes, ranging from murder and rape to burglary and embezzlement. Gottfredson and Hirschi also highlighted, in A General Theory of Crime (1990), that low self control correlates with personal impulsivity. This impulsive attitude leads individuals to become insensitive to deviant behaviors such as smoking, drinking, illicit sex, and gambling (p. 90). The extreme simplicity, yet accuracy, of Gottfredson s and Hirschi s general theory of crime (self control theory), make it the most empirically supported theory of criminal conduct, as well as deviant acts. First off, there have been ample amounts of disapproval in relation to the general theory of crime, because many scholars feel that Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990) failed to include the ... The bargaining process was criticised for taking too long, as AIPA and ALAE negotiations began in August 2010, and then in 2011 TWU had began bargaining . (Brigden, 2012). As a result of no progress in the negotiations, applications to FWA were made to commence protected industrial action. Subsequently various forms of action was undertaken by the three employee groups. The unions engaged in overtime bans and ongoing brief work stoppages, which disrupted Qantas flights regularly and impacted reportedly on the airline commercially (workplace xpress 2011e) (Todd, 2012). Industrial action conducted by the Engineers included short stoppages, weekend overtime bans, full shift stoppages and a stop work meeting. The protected action was intermittent, and on some occasions was not undertaken when scheduled, also, stoppages were managed in order for Qantas to continue business. (Sangkuhl, 2011) Conciliation with FWA had also commenced but no advancements had been made (Brigden, 2012). TWU also conducted short stoppages, and a stop work meeting, and although it would appear that these were conducted to minimise disruptions this was inevitable as some stoppages were cancelled, affecting Qantas business. • 41. Women In The Epic Of Gilgamesh And Lysistrata, Calonice... In the ancient world, views of women were often derogatory, yet some viewed women as intelligent and powerful. The Epic of Gilgamesh and Lysistrata both display the complex opinions towards women of the time. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, the characters Shamhat and Ishtar provide the audience with a biased view towards women, but this work also provides a more positive opinion of women through Siduri, Utnapishtim s wife, and Aruru. As paralleled in Aristophanes s Lysistrata, Calonice and Peace represent negative perspectives of women, but this play also portrays women positively with Lysistrata and Myrrhine. The ancient texts of The Epic of Gilgamesh and Lysistrata simultaneously depict women as inferior, equal to, and superior to men to represent the complex views of women that were present during ancient times. The Epic of Gilgamesh renders women as subordinate to men through the characters Shamhat and Ishtar. In this epic, Shamhat is a prostitute and must obey men s wishes. As Gilgamesh wants to civilize Enkidu, he tells the hunter, Take with you Shamhat the harlot, when the wild beasts draw near the water hole, let her strip off her clothing , laying bare her charms (103). Although it is a part of Shamhat s job to do what men want, Gilgamesh speaking about controlling her actions suggests that he believes women should always defer to men. Furthermore, Gilgamesh insists Enkidu have sex with Shamhat in order for him to become a man (104). This emphasis on virility ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The reason Jekyll is a good example to show the Victorian qualities of science exploration and the effects the individual has on the world is explained by Masao, In this society of respectables Dr. Jekyll stands out as the very pink of the proprieties (Chap. 1). Although his studies, like those of Faust and Frankenstein before him, tend toward the mystic and the transcendental (Ch. 10), he still manages to maintain a considerable scientific reputation. And yet, despite Jekyll s social role in fact, because of it it is Jekyll who brings for Mr. Hyde. Masao also explains that science is possible through the well mannered people of the time and their questioning of ways to improve society. The Modernism Period was about the individual and that the individual could not really change society. The Modernist literary period was marked by the reactions and sentiments towards global change and tragedy. The Modernist movement began around 1890 and lasted to 1945.
