in contemporary society. However, a majority of the discussion centres around the impact on the
victims, as well as the injustice of their behaviour. Little of the discussion looks at what goes on
through the minds of these types of offenders. In this essay, I will attempt to unpack a number of
theories that discuss the roots of the occurrence of rape. This will be evaluated in conjunction with
the criminological theory of seductions of crime, as well as the conflict theory. In addition to
this, I will scrutinise these theories and its flaws. I will also be using the example of a real life
convicted rapist to show his version of how someone could become a sex offender. Furthermore, an
analysis on different character traits of sex offenders will follow this, as well as an investigation

Certain Lady, Dorothy Parker uses symbolism to convey a theme of how damaging lovecan be. For
example, Parker describes eager lips to show her attraction to him, even though he was causing
her pain by not being faithful. She also describes that her heart is dying over and over every time
he tells her of his excursions with other women. Parker seems regretful by the way she ends her
poem, and the characters are never described individually.
Symbolism is used throughout Parker s poem, creating an unclear connotation. She uses words
such as eager lips to show how intense her emotions are. She feels so very strong for her
companion that she is longing for, that she is hopeful for him to come back to her. Even though
she misses him and wants him to come back from his trips, it is bittersweet for her because he
always tells her about what exactly he has been doing while he was away. Parker also uses
symbolism as she writes that her heart dies over and over, each time her companion explains how
he has been with other women. This could represent that her love is dying for him each time he
cheats on her, or that she is so disappointed in him that she cannot give him her whole heart.
Though she seems desperate sometimes throughout the poem, I believe the female character is a
strong woman who may just be intimidated by the man she loves, or even scared of what might
happen if she were to leave.
Parker ends the poem with a regretful, mysterious tone. The last lines of the poem read And what
goes on, my love, while you re away, You ll never know. Ending the poem with the uncertainty of
not knowing what really happens when he is away really allows for
