Jelloun, are both powerful texts that give the reader sympathy and strong emotional experiences.
When comparing the two texts, there are multiple aspects that they share, for example they both
convey a strong message on survival and what it s like to be faced with death, however the setting,
symbolism and themes like hope, and the power of thought are very different. The novel This Blinding
Absence of Light is set in the Tazmamart prison in Morocco, where Salim, a prisoner of war, was held
captive with 18 other men for 20 years. When confined in a small, pitch black chamber, with only
starchy food, sludgy water and what hope they have left, Salim and the men are pushed to their limits
of survival under such harsh conditions. Throughout the novel Salim goes on both a mental and

Health care disparities is known for its vulnerability among low income and minority status
populations. Of most concern are the vulnerable population subgroups known by the harsh
environments in which they live, their endangered and unhealthy life styles and the illnesses and
injuries that afflict them. These subpopulations include refugees and immigrants, people living with
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), alcohol and substance abusers, high risk mothers and
infants, victims of family or other violence, and the chronically ill (Teruya, Longshore, Andersen,
Arangua, Nyamathi, Leake Gelberg, 2010, p.1). Among these vulnerable sub populations, one with
some of the greatest health and health care disparities, is the homeless especially homeless women and
their children (Teruya et al., 2010, p.1).
People often think that homelessness only affects men and women but in reality homelessness also
affects families It is estimated that 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness every year. Among
this group, 17 percent are single women and 30 percent are families with children (Finfgeld Connet,

characterized as passive, easily influenced, and indecisive. Joyce highlights Eveline s indecisiveness

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. A book that I never expected to read because of my
stance on avoiding religious books, but oddly enough I could not put it down. The book is a
representation of culture arrogance, racism, greed, ignorance, and imperialism that occurred through
1959 and on. The book introduces a religious, missionary family from Georgia who are headed to the
village of Kilanga in Belgium Congo. What grabbed my attention in the beginning is that each
member in the family, which happens to be all girls, has their turn to tell their story through their eyes,
except oddly enough the overly religious evangelical Baptist father, who s only purpose is to spread
the name and views of God to the Congolese.
Each daughter is different from the other. You have the oldest, who s to ignorant to try to understand

initiatives of corporate governance have led to an improvement in the quality of financial reporting
and whether these initiatives have been effective in tackling the problem of earnings management.
Shen and Chih (2007), for example, find in nine Asian countries that firms with good corporate
governance tend to conduct less earnings management. Also, In India, Sarkar et al. (2008) show that
diligent boards are associated with lowers earnings manipulation. Additionally, in Jordan, Al khabash

significant influence on the practice of illegitimate earnings management. In support, Kamel and
Elbanna (2010) find a consensus among their respondents regarding the importance of combating
earnings management in Egypt through greater reliance on internal corporate governance mechanisms.
In particular, this paper examines the roles board, audit committee, board size, and number of board
meeting to reduce earnings management practices in Bangladesh. In a September 1998 speech to
lawyers and CPAs, Arthur Levitt, chairman of the Security Exchange Commission committed the SEC

Helfat s (1997) article is written to examine the theory of dynamic capability. Helfat cites Teece and
Pisano s (1994: 541) definition as the subset of the competences/capabilities which allow the firm to
create new products and processes and respond to changing market circumstances (Helfat, 1997 :
339). Helfat examines how complimentary assets in a firm can influence their dynamic capabilities.
Specifically, how a firm is able to use current assets, such as economies of scope, to respond to a
dynamic market. Helfat examines the oil industry, which is often filled with high levels of
complimentary assets such as R D and economies of scope, in order to gain a better understanding of
how the theory of dynamic capability actualizes itself. Helfat uses data from the energy industry
because its availability, the nature of the industry itself (highly diversified firms), and the unique
opportunity to examine historical data of the dynamic environment (specifically the years which the

Abstract
This study investigated the accounts of individuals involved in the London underground bombings in
2005. Throughout this investigation, thematic analysis was conducted on six eyewitness accounts,
highlighting their feelings and actions, which came about as a result of the incident. From these
accounts I obtained 4 key themes, which were consistent components of the six accounts. Evidently, I
found that the two most common themes were helping behaviour and the panic myth. This was rather
unexpected, as initially, I expected to find irrational and helpless behaviour, due to the panic and stress
of being trapped in a bombed underground. To conclude, the investigation illuminated the concept of
helping others before helping ones self. Thus, contradicting the concept of survival of the fittest, as in
this case the fittest were those who took it upon themselves to assist other passengers in need.
Therefore, highlighting the power of empathy which was risen with experiencing the disaster.
