Constructing The First Transcontinental Railroad
Constructing the first transcontinental railroad in the United States of America was arguably our
country s crowning achievement for engineering ingenuity and determination in the 19th century.
The railroad was a herculean of a task that required extensive proper prior planning, muscle, blood
and tears that has rarely ever been seen before or to this day. In addition to the brains behind the
operation and the labor force that drove this project to completion, the railroad companies (Central
Pacific and Union Pacific R.R.) responsible wouldn t have even gotten beyond the first mile without
the political representatives that lobbied on their behalf in front of Congress. The man by the name
Judah was the sole individual that garnered government backing behind Central Pacific.

Penicillin s Discovery
(noun)
1.An antibiotic or group of antibiotics produced naturally by certain blue moulds, now usually
prepared synthetically.
2. A blue mould of a type that produces penicillin (Oxford University Press 2015)
Penicillin was first discovered in 1928 and quickly became known as a miracle drug. Penicillin s
areas of largest significance fall into three categories and this essay will briefly outline how
Penicillin s discovery contributed historically, scientifically and in the military, particularly in the
Second World War.
The history of Penicillin s discovery can be accredited to fate, luck or just poor hygiene. It was
Alexander Fleming who happened across Penicillin in September 1928 at St Mary s Hospital
Medical School (Wood 2010, В¶14). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Meanwhile, the Oxford team was also using creative methods with the equipment at hand to
culture Penicillin; making use of bed pans, milk churns and baths all rigged together. They were
finally able to purify what they thought was enough for the first human trial on 12 February 1941.
Albert Alexander, a policeman suffering from a severe infection was Penicillin s first patient. After
seeing the results of this miracle drug it was obvious that if they had enough for a full course of the
antibiotic, he would have been practically pulled from his deathbed to a full recovery.
Unfortunately after receiving injections for 4 days, the realisation occurred that there was
simply not enough to cure him and he later relapsed in the beginning of March (Wood 2010,
В¶16 21). The Columbia team wasn t far behind them, when on 5 May 1941 they presented
findings at a meeting of American Society for Clinical Investigation, after trailing on several
patients. These findings made the front page of several newspapers, including the New York
Times on 7 May 1941 (Oatman 2005, В¶14, 15). Penicillin was on its way to making global

Explain Why It Is Important To Take A Child s Temperature
Taking Your Child s Temperature
Knowing how to take your child s temperature is important so you can identify fevers and treat
illnesses properly. A normal temperature range is between 96В°F (35.8В°C) and 99В°F (37.3В°C).
To find out what temperature is normal for your child, take your child s temperature when he or she
is well.
Whenever you take your child s temperature, write it down. Record the time, date, and any
symptoms your child has.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF THERMOMETERS?
There are several different types of thermometers. No matter which type you use, you should always
use a thermometer that provides a digital reading. Types of thermometers recommended for safe use
include:
Digital multi use thermometer. This type can read the temperature of the body in the mouth
(orally), in the rectum (rectally), or under the arm (axillary). ... Show more content on

This type is designed to be placed against the side of the forehead. It picks up the heat from the
temporal artery, which runs across the forehead.
Tympanic thermometer. This type is designed to be inserted gently into the ear canal. It records the
heat from a child s eardrum.
There are a few types of thermometer that are not recommended for use because they may not be
safe or they may not provide an accurate reading. Types of thermometers not recommended for use
include:
Glass mercury thermometers. Mercury is dangerous to your child s health and to the environment.
The glass in this type of thermometer can break, which could result in injury.
Temperature strips. These disposable strips have chemically treated dots that register temperature.

Taking a Look at Types of Disasters
According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (n.d), the
definition of disaster is known as: an unexpected, catastrophic event that extremely disturbs the
functioning of a community or society and causes human, material, and environmental losses that
go beyond the community s ability to handle using its own resources. In addition, the disaster could
be classified into two category which are the natural disaster and also human made disaster. First, a
natural disaster is known as the naturally occurring event or changes in natural phenomenon that
has disastrous impacts towards the society. The extent of loss vary to the vulnerability of the
population, and also the scope and intensity of the disaster. Examples for natural disasters are
earthquake, typhoon, volcanic eruptions, flood and so on. Conversely, human made disaster is
known as the event that often caused by the negligence or human error which lead to a disastrous
impacts towards the society. Example of human made disasters are technological hazards such as
nuclear weapons, transportation hazards like airplane crash, and so on. Ten years ago, there was a
massive undersea earthquake which known as the Sumatra Andaman earthquake that occurred at 26
December 2004. The earthquake was classified as natural disaster that caused by the movement of
tectonic plates under the ocean which lead to a series of destructive tsunamis that hit and impacted
14 countries in total. Moreover,

Conch Symbolism
Throughout the book the conch develops as motif and it keeps reoccuring because it has
symbolic meaning to it. The conch symbolizes order, civilization and voice. Piggy and Ralph
found the conch at the beach and they use it to bring all the boys together after the plane crash.
The conch symbolizes order and rules because of the meaning the boys give it, the conch is just
a random shell but they value it which makes it important. The conch is extremely important to
Piggy because it makes him feel like they ll have rules!..Lots of rules and when anyone breaks em
wacco! (Golding 33). It gives him power and respect he also feels as if the boys can be organized
instead of being chaotic. It represents civilization because the boys work together

Index of Economic Freedom Essay
The steady stream of current world events provides us with the signs to be read if we only take
the time and the intention to pay attention to those lessons. The economic view provides a robust
language for understanding the basic physical reality of scarcity, and the varied human beliefs and
responses we take as we attempt to deal with that scarcity. As Smith and Ricardo teach us, the
subtle and important understanding lies in the space between what human desires dictate in the
personal scale, in the short run; and what consequences play out on the grand scale, in the long
run. In this paper we look at the proxy effects of policies intended by governments to forge policies
in the short run, as compared to the inevitable effects that flow... Show more content on

Swot Analysis Of Risksense Inc. Essay
Introduction
Cybersecurity is defined as the state of being protected against the criminal or unauthorized use of
electronic data, or measures taken to achieve this. (Oxford Dictionaries) I researched, and found a
lot of new cybersecurity technology, but in this paper, I narrowed it down to four. All of these
technologies seem like they will have a huge impact on the cybersecurity field as a whole.
Cybersecurity is important because we would not have much of anything in cyberspace if nothing
was secure.

The first technology I found is called RiskSense. RiskSense Inc. a spin off of the New Mexico
Institute of Mining and Technology. They originally conducted research as a service projects. For
the U.S Department of Defense and U.S Intelligence Community, they made Computational

Stand up comedy industry Essay
Title Stand up comedy industry
Thesis 1: From an industrial organization point of view, the stand up comedy market structure in
the 1980s can be characterized as an oligopoly
The structure of a market, thus how a market is functioning, is the concept behind the industrial
organization theory . The Industrial Organization (IO) theory is about, how a structure of a market
has an influence on the strategy and decision making of a company. 1 The theory therefore focusses
on the market wherein the company operates and links the decisions of the company to the market.
In the economic theory of industrial organisation, an industry can be defined according to several
different criteria.2 According to Throsby, there are three... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1975 such a diachronic dialectic was found for the first time in de music industry by Peterson
and Berger. They saw an active interaction/connection between small and large firms, which
influenced the market. While the large firms were competing with each other, niches opened up
and were filled by smaller firms.
But unlike the music industry and the American film industry (Mezias Mezias, 2000), there is not a
diachronic dialectic between small firms and large firms in the stand up comedy industry.
According to the resource partitioning theory, a theory conceptualized by Caroll in 1985, this
dialectic exists when the big firms are competing with each other. Just a few of these generalists
survive and they move forward toward the centre of the market. Because of this movement small
pockets of resources open up, where smaller firms can thrive (Vermeulen Bruggeman, 2000).
However, in the stand up comedy industry it is difficult to underestimate large and small firms,
instead we distinguish comedians and the media they use to reach their audience. Hence it weren t
large firms causing the opening of the niches for smaller firms. Instead it has been the increase of
the use of media over the past couple decades that has stimulated the creative industry of stand up
comedy.

Globalization And Its Impact On The Global Economy
Globalisation has made up enormously over the last half century after taking place for hundreds of
years. Globalisation development of the increasingly interconnected which results massively
increased trade and culture exchange. This production has had an increase of goods and services;
the biggest companies are now multinational corporations with subsidiaries in many countries
(Bbc.co.uk, 2016). Globalisation has a greater scale in the international movement of goods and
services, economical investment and the people and information. Results of globalisation indicates
that the world development may be more sustainable. Political relations and the global
environmental have become successfully intertwined, an increase in the global economic
incorporation (Martens and Raza, 2016). Globalisation has resulted in: increased international trade
a company operating in more than one country greater dependence on the global economy freer
movement of capital, goods, and services recognition of companies such as McDonalds and
Starbucks in LEDCs Globalisation is helping to create more wealth in unindustrialized countries but
it isn t helping to close the gap between the poorest countries and the richest countries in the world.

Essay on Social Changes and Unrest in American During...
December 7th, 2013
World War I left the citizens of the United States on edge and fearing for their lives and their
families lives from the Reds. The Reds were the army that Vladimir Lenin led against the Russian
Monarchy to introduce communism in Russia. Many Americans feared that Lenin s followers, the
Bolsheviks, would come and do the same in America. They were afraid America would be taken
over. By immigrants, anarchists, and communists. This post World War I time period became
known as the Red Scare. During this time of fear and unease every immigrant was suspect in the
eyes of the native Americans and the government. The war, combined with this, caused many social

When found individuals within these terror groups would be arrested, tried, then deported. The task
force Palmer created started these arrest and deportation cycles which evolved and became known
as The Palmer Raids. In these raids Palmer led the justice department on raids of suspected radical
groups. January 2nd, 1920, thousands of suspected radicals were arrested and charged with anarchy,
though only about 500 ended up getting deported. Not only was there turmoil in the immigrants
community, but it was also within the American population (About Red Scare).
The Seattle General Strike, in February of 1919, was one of the primary events of the Red
Scare. This strike was the first city wide labor action to be names a general strike in America. It
began at the shipyards and froze the Seattle port, as well as started spreading fear throughout
America. September 9th, 1919, the Boston Police Department went on strike as well. The
American people feared the Reds were the cause of this strike and it shook the people of Boston
to their core. Theft and looting ran rampant in Boston and the whole city was paralyzed. In the fall,
steel workers went on strike to get eight hour work days, which slowed the nation s economy. That
November, the Industrial Workers of the World
, or IWW, were created in Centralia, Washington. All
of these strikes started the fear that the IWW was attempting to revolt. Panic filled the nation as

Comparing Two Adverts
Smoking has a dramatic impact on many Victorians. Two ads that are trying to address the issue
are Vic Health Will your kids go through the agony and Quit Line s Should have been there . They
are trying to stop parents smoking and position them to quit for their kids. Quit Line is an
organisation that has been running since early 1970. Vic health on the other hand has been running
since 1987. The contention of Should have been there is for the parents to stop smokingso they do
not miss out on things with their kids. The intention is to stop smoking so the viewers can spend
as much time as possible with their kids. Whereas the contention of Will your kids go through the
agony is to get the audience to stop and think about their kids and how will they go if the viewer
passes away from smoking the intention is for the audience to stop smoking so for the kids sake....

They both are targeting the same audience (parents). They highlight and emphasise the point that
kids have to go through the pain just as much as the adult. They both use music to make the
audience feel what they are going through. When these two ads use sad music, it is trying to make
the audience s emotions come into play so that they feel as though they are in that situation and
they are truly saddened about what is going on with that family. They both demonstrate and
reinforce the fact that everyone is affected by just one person smoking in the family. The
contention is very similar because they are both stating that the person will miss out on things with
their kids. Again, these ads are very similar and are each are trying to say something about how
parents smoking can lead to them missing

Purloined Letter And The Murders In The Rue Morgue
The stories I chose for this unit are The Fall of the House of Usher, The Purloined Letter, and The
Murders in the Rue Morgue. The first story I chose involved with two siblings that have
something wrong with them. The brother who has a mental illness which leads to the suffering of
fear and anxiety, as well as having a morbid acuteness of the senses. The Purloined Letter tells
about how the queen got her letter stolen by Minister D, and yet Dupin stole that Minister D s letter
who replaced the stolen letter with a fake one. The Murders in the Rue Morgue tells about how
Dupin solves the murders of two people with a daughter s throat cut then being stuffed up a

People would also like to have immortality such as living beyond death or leaving a mark the

People would do more positive things to leave their mark, so thinking of death would drive others
to do good. The other part of the people who think of negative things will believe that death will
have a terrible outcome.
The only character I believe would act the closest to actual people would be Dupin. Dupin copes
with death by reading books and he does more good if he solves the impossible which leaves his

The Death Of The Trenches
Children are often considered carefree and innocent, which is the reason behind their state of
happiness. They rarely cross paths with conflict from the outside world, but what happens when
they become men and are sent off to fight in the war? Otto Dix s visual representation along with
the poems, Suicide in the Trenches by Siegfried Sassoon, Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred
Owens, and Blessed Are by Charles Peguy all capture the horrors and distress caused by World
War 1. When it came time to enlist in the war, young men were ecstatic about becoming heroes
by the act of serving their country. Although, in reality these men did not know the consequences
that came with their life changing decision to go into combat. Sassoon s Suicide in the Trenches
exposes the psychological issues that overwhelmed one soldier in particular, but as the reader, it
is clear that the feelings described belong to any soldier that ever felt the wrath of the war. The
first stanza paints a picture of a soldier who knows nothing of death or destruction. Line number
three, specifically, reads slept soundly through the lonesome dark (Suicide in the Trenches). This
shows that prior to the war, this soldier felt comfortable and safe within the walls of his home and
most importantly, he felt safe within himself. The last mention of him is in the second stanza where
it is revealed that he committed suicide. The last stanza could resemble a call of action. The
narrator calls the civilians

Russian Revolution Research Paper
The Russian Revolution
The Russian Revolution was an extremely difficult time for everyone. The events that occurred
lead to the idea of communism today. A great amount of events occurred during the years leading
up to the revolution. First, Russia had already faced many other wars and the country was
struggling because of lack of communication from their Emperor Tsar Nicholas II. Next, during the
revolution, Nicholas II was pushed out of office and the country started to follow the ideas of
Lenin and the Bolsheviks. The February and October Revolutions also took place during the span

to the Library of Congress The Red Army and the White Army fought this war on three main fronts.
These regions were located in the east, the south and the northwest of the Soviet Union. These were
also the three major parts of the war. During the time of this war there was little rain which caused
great famine. According to the Library of Congress about 1 million Russians had left Russia during
this time of hardship and moved to other countries permanently. Eventually, Lenin and the

What Makes a Just Society Essay
What Makes A Just Society?
Throughout history, people have been trying to create an improved, fair, and equal system of
justice, not only to better society in which one lives, but to also find a sense of meaning in what
responsibilities people should hold within their civilizations in order to create this just way of
living. As early as the Old Testament within the Bible, we see examples of how the Hebrews
formed their own justice. This can be seen in the in text of the Ten Commandments which were
written in a form of law. Laws were significant even in this basic form of context, such as the Ten
Commandments, which offered the ideas of right and wrongdoings and the sin for violating others
for one s own benefit. This not only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea then of a just society I contend, comes down to people living under a fair and common
law, order, political system, social organization, as well as everyone having personal and political
freedom. Many people, besides myself, have also contemplated this question, whether a utopian
society could exist, and have put forth their own theories. Karl Marx and John Rawls are two
thinkers that questioned what the theory of justice. Marx believed that history was always
moving forward towards a utopian ending. Marx disliked injustice and declared this in his
Communist Manifesto in 1846. His theory is centered on the idea that forms of society rise and
fall as they develop and then became an obstacle for the development of human productive
power and reality is governed by economic needs. This belief means that the present organization
of society must be destroyed. To establish this new society, people must be organized and take up
the struggle against the capitalists who take advantage of them. This struggle, according to Marx,
will end in victory for the workers. However, Marx was unable to discover what laws and
principles that would produce the just society in which he strived for. John Rawls was the second
most important political thinker of his time. His main contribution to the idea of a civil society is
his theory of justice. Rawls believed in social primary goods which included rights,

Difference Between Parallel Engine And External Combustion...
Intake stroke
In the internal combustion engine, the piston starts form the top. As the crankshaft rotates the
piston will start to move down which will allow the intake valve to open so air and fuel can flow
inside the combustion chamber. In this process, the mixture of air and fuel gets pulled in the
combustion chamber.
Compression stroke
During this stage, both intake and exhaust valve get closed. Due to this, as the piston moves
upwards, it compresses the air and fuel mixture
Combustion stroke
As the piston reaches close to the spark plug, the spark plug will cause a spark to burn the fuel
and the air mixture. This will cause the fuel and air mixture to explode which will cause the piston
to go downwards again.
Exhaust stroke
This is the final stage of the process where piston will move upwards to release the exhaust gas
through the exhaust valve. At the beginning of this stage, the exhaust valve will open to allow the
exhaust gas to release.
After the final stage, the piston will be left up where it originally stared from so the process can be
repeated.
Spark ignition and compression ignition engines
Both Spark ignition and compression ignition engines are really similar to each other. However
they both have different processor to burn the fuel as they both use different types of fuel types
(petrol/Diesel). Because of this, they both have different compression ratio.
Compression ignition engine are also know as diesel engine as they use diesel as a fuel. In

The most common camera shot is a medium shot with the camera tilted up from Ms Trunchbull

see her clearly and still be able to see her arrogant body language and expressions. Although, in
one scene in the movie, an extreme close up is used to show that Ms Trunchbull is more
powerful than Miss Honey. This shows her imperfections and gives the impression that Ms

Chapter 3: Define corporate responsibility (CSR). Describe the benefits. Why do some
executives support CSR while others find it troublesome and argue against it? Corporate social
responsibility is what a company uses to self regulate itself and refers to business practices
involving initiatives that benefit society. A business s CSR can encompass a wide variety of
tactics, from giving away a portion of a company s proceeds to charity and implementing greener
business operations. Companies use implement Corporate Social responsibilities for various

the amount of damage they do to the environment is good and that s why we see CSR being

Alliances Will Determine The Fate Of The Chickasaw Tribe
Alliances will determine the fate of the Chickasaw tribe. During the Revolutionary war,
Payamataha, the Chickasaw foreign diplomat, decided that maintaining peace and neutrality would
better benefit the tribe and preserve the Chickasaw people and land. With Independence Lost by
Kathleen DuVal, Payamataha decision to stay out of the Revolutionary War and advocate peace led
to the defeat of the British and results in the loss of the Chickasawland by the Americans. During
the Seven Years War, the Chickasaws suffered many casualties and loss of resources while fighting

Martin Luther King once said, There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither
safe, popular, or political, but because it is right. The song Hurricane , written by Bob Dylan
takes a stand and ignores what was safe, popular, and politically right during the 1960 s and 1970
s, in order to paint a picture of injustice. Dylan organizes the actual events of a man named Rubin

The judge made Rubin s witnesses drunkards from the slums. To the white folks who watched he
was a revolutionary bum and to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger. No one doubted that
he pulled the trigger. And though they could not produce the gun, the D.A. said he was the one
who did the deed and the all white jury agreed. In this verse Dylan is making a point that not only
were the Patterson police trying to make an example out of Hurricane but also the D.A. and the
overseeing judge. Keep in mind that during 1966 the United States was in the midst of a historical
transition as just two years earlier President Lyndon B. Johnson had signed the Civil Rights Act
outlawing all forms of discrimination against African Americans and women, including racial
segregation. The act created serious tension among whites and blacks as a majority of whites
refused to accept the change and the blacks were free to fight back against those who refused. In the
end the tension provoked many hostile riots and fights to breakout all over the U.S. The year 1966
also marked the start of the Black Power movement, which was maintained until the 1970 s. The
movement brought together black collective interest that consisted of racial pride, political goals,
establishment of other social institutions, and most importantly a continued defense against racial
oppression.

William Blake Literary Analysis
What is now proved was once only imagined.
(Ed. Mason, Michael. William Blake: Selected Poetry. Oxford World Classics, 2008.)
This paper started with a quote which mainly emphasize on the power of imagination. The line
which is quoted above, said by one of the early romantic poet, one who never went to university,
never took opium, did not end up his life in a very tender age, never left England, did not went on
any Grand tour in his life span, did not have any illicit or failed affairs or relationships, had no one
who would call him father and unfortunately never got the fame during his own lifetime. He is the
one, who shine out like a star whenever one talks about Mysticism and Imagination in English
Literature, William Blake. What he says about Imagination is
The Imagination is not a state: it is the human existence itself.
(Damon, Samuel Foster. Ed. Eaves Morris. A Blake Dictionary: The Ideas and Symbol Of William
Blake. UPNE, 1988.)
After reading his thoughts about imagination and the power of imagination one could able to
recognize that he believes in the imaginary world around him. He talks about angels and God like
figures which could be seen by him only, which proves him as true mystic.
After knowing the fact that he was a mystic, the next questions which struck the minds is what is
Mysticism? What is so fascinating in mysticism which makes him a mystic?
Here is the answer, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, Mysticism is a Belief that union
with or absorption into the deity or the absolute, or the spiritual apprehension of knowledge
inaccessible to the intellect, may be attained through contemplation and self surrender . It also
comes with another definition which says, Vague or ill defined religious or spiritual belief,
especially a belief in the occult . So, basically it is somehow related to the kind of religious beliefs
a person have. Actually, Blake was a non conformist. Non conformism refers in history to religious
groups that had alienated from the Church of England in the course of the seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries. Such people had groups like Baptists, Methodists, Puritans, Quakers and
Unitarians. Few researchers believe that his parents were Swedenborgians or readers

In 1950, a man, Enrico Fermi, during a lunch break conversations causally asked his co workers

Teaching and Learning in a Networked Composition Classroom
In her essay Technology and Literacy: A Story about the Perils of Not Paying Attention, Cynthia L.

The intent of this essay is not to offer universal solutions to this problem, but rather to bring the
experiences of one particular computerized classroom, both positive and negative, into dialogue
with the numerous voices already speaking out about the role of computers in education. By doing
so, I hope to demonstrate how the human component of the technology education equation the

Self Care Practice With Older People
As a support worker, I have noticed in my care practice with elderly people, that every single

changing the kinds of clothes worn and the way they are fastened. One person may be able to eat

evil creature. Within lines 605 645 in Book 1 Milton humanizes Satan on a level that the readers

Here the reader sees Satan describing how God doesn t have to do anything, he accomplished
something once and is now valued while Satan has to constantly try and justify himself. God is
held up by old repute , that he will sit on his thrown and won t be touched because he is God and
there is no hope for Satan to overcome this reputation. When Satan goes on to tell the reader that
God just being God tempted our attempt, and wrought our fall (1.642) he is providing the image
of going into battle. Ultimately it wasn t his fault he had to perform such a task but it was God s
old repute that made him go forth with the battle. That maybe then Satan would get his own solid
image instead of being compared to various towers [without the implication of there always being
a taller one]. It is through these humanizing images presented that the reader is able to feel
sympathy towards someone who is said to be feared due to his excess evil. By looking at Satan
through different eyes it is although he becomes somewhat relatable to humans and suggests that he
is misunderstood. That possibly there is more to the story between the separation of Heaven and
Hell that the readers do not

King Louis XIV, On Social Order And Absolute Monarchy
After suppressing revolts by the Fronde in 17th century France, King Louis XIV had become the
supreme ruler of the country. Without any challenges to his power, he was able to practice
absolutism, which is the concentration of power and symbolic authority in royal hands. With this
power Louis XIV had many great achievements in France. He improved the tax system, religion,
trading, and court life.1 Jean Domat was a juror who was supported by the king himself. He
dedicated his life to explain and justify the importance of the role of absolutism in French society.
The culmination of this work can be found in his legal digest, On Social Order and Absolute
Monarchy. Many interesting ideas about the theory of absolutism can be found in his writings. It
explains the essential environment for absolutism, defines the origin and necessity of government,
and demonstrates the duties of the sovereign.
Domat s theory first begins with the idea of a perfect society. It is one with a comfortable style
of living for all in the nation. For this to occur, a state of order is necessary. Everyone needs to
know their rank and work together to contribute to society. Specific roles are given to each person,
and ideally they will all work to the best of their ability. It is in this environment that absolutism
thrives. Relationships between the government and the governed are easier to foster when
everyone has a duty and they do not question their place in the community. Because Domat gave
this basis for absolutism with his idea of teamwork in a state, he is able to justify the rest of his
theory.
After providing the basis, Domat justifies the role of government. He starts by stating that all men
are essentially equal by nature. This seems like it would argue against absolute power of
government, but he goes on to find the differences in society. They actually appear in the form of
things like social status, occupation, and relationships built. These factors are what gives rank and
society, which in return prove the need of government. According to Domat, these dynamics also
arise in nature. He explains, this distinction leads to a first kind of government in families, where
children owe obedience to their parents, who head the

Initiation Story Essay
Initiation Story
A P , written by John Updike, is based on a moment in the life of a cashier. He was known as
Sammy and he referred to his position in the grocery store as a slot checker. Sammy spent his time
watching and wondering about customers. One day, while working, three girls dressed in bikinis
entered the store and attracted his attention. He describes the three girls movements and watches
them as they roam throughout the store. Eventually, the girls work their way to Sammy s cashier
station to purchase the item which they have selected. Then Lengel, the manager of the store, enters
and embarrasses the girls for their attire. As a result, Sammy quits his job at the A P. This short story

I ve often thought to myself) (489). This is the only way Sammy seems to keep himself busy
during days when there are not so many customers.
His boss, Lengel is a symbol of authority to Sammy in this literary work. Sammy seemingly dreads
the sight of his manager. This is depicted when Sammy states:
Then everybody s luck begins to run out. Lengel comes in from haggling with a truck full of
cabbages on the lot and is about to scuttle into that door marked MANAGER behind which he
hides all day when the girls touch his eye. Lengel s pretty dreary, teaches Sunday school and the
rest, but he doesn t miss that much. (489)
However, when the girls were embarrassed by Lengel Sammy s personality changed. He stood up
to his manager and quit his job. This is demonstrated in the dialogue between Sammy and Lengel
which states: The girls, and who d blame them are in a hurry to get out, so I say I quit .... Did you
say something, Sammy? I said I quit. I thought you did. You didn t have to embarrass them. (490)
This dialogue between the two characters exhibits Sammy standing up to authority. He no longer
wanted to witness this kind of behavior. Consequently, he had to quit his job. Initially, Sammy was
behaving in this manner to

Introduction
This paper will analyze Shriners Hospital for children, a non profit hospital system owned by
Shriners International, through the theoretical lens of Bolman and Deals Leadership Frameworks
(1997). This paper will define structural and symbolic aspects of the organization, analyze strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats through structural assessment to identify growth and risk
potential, and propose possible solutions for identified issues.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a non profit hospital system that maintains 22 hospitals for
children in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. 18 of the hospitals provide orthopedic
specialization; three hospitals focus on burn care, and one hospital offers burn, spinal, and
orthopedic care. The first hospital was opened in Shreveport Louisiana, in 1922 by Shriners
International, a fraternal organization for men. The hospitals provide cutting edge care for a variety
of condition, actively engage in research for cures to childhood diseases and improvement to
orthopedic and burn treatments (Schumaker, 2005).

Examples Of Power In All Quiet On The Western Front
Power in All Quiet on the Western Front
There are many people in the world that have power. Their power is impactful to the people
under them and maybe big enough for things like countries and the world. This is a big idea that
Erich Remarque had when he was writing All Quiet on the Western Front. The war in the novel
and the soldiers who take place in it are greatly impacted by the people who have control over
them. The soldiers do not agree or like how they run things. A larger theme in All Quiet on the
Western Front by Erich Remarque is power is bad because instinct takes over.
The first reason that this is a larger theme found in the novel is because in the passage where Kat
is talking about his drill sergeant and how he is so mean. He explains that it is in our human
nature to want to have control because they do the best in life. On the march back the order to
sing is given again, and once more we start. Now what s the use of all that? It s simply that the
company commander s head has been turned by having so much power (Remarque 44). This is a
great way that the character explained how power takes control over people and shows other
people that they are of high importance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the passage, the character Kat explains that the army that they are a part of is ran on the fact
that one man must have power over another (Remarque 44). This is not a good way to run things
according to the book because people have no sympathy for what is happening and sometimes do
not even know what is going on. A non com, can torment a private, a lieutenant a non com, a
captain a lieutenant, until he goes mad. And because they know they can, they all soon acquire the
habit more or less (Remarque 44). The range of power shows how long this the army has been run

More than two million enterprises have women in management positions, but gender inequality in
the workplace at small and medium sized enterprises is still a big problem in our world today.
According to a study done by Workingmums, more than two thousand women said they ve had
flexible working requests turn down. This can be really hard on these women because most of
them need these flexible hours because they re supporting a family. An enterprise called The
Typeface Group is trying to help their workers and they offer flexibility to all their women. There
s no glass ceiling at this enterprise but this is usually not the case at other companies. A company
with the name DAME made an effort to secure funding for women and this led to many problems
such as sexism. Men started to go against this business because the co founder had children that
men thought were getting in the way of her growing the business. Sarah Andersen, the head of
people science at HR software company, Fairsail, believes that businesses have an unconscious
gender bias that s rooted in both men and women. When this bias is

The Retrotorical Analysis Of The Movie Freedom Writers
In the movie Freedom Writers, there are several controversial topics discussed. The movie deals
with the hardships that goes along with poverty in a bad neighborhood.. The director, Richard
LaGravenese, did a nice job at portraying what the students go through (The Freedom Writers
Diary). The teacher, Mrs. Gruwell, did everything that she could so that she could inspire them to
want to learn, and live better lives than they have. These students lives are so much harder and
more violent than most people could ever imagine. Mrs. Gruwell, a first time teacher, was in
charge of teaching a group of misbehaved students, who had no motivation to learn. Most of the
students in her class are involved in gangs. All of the students have lost friends due to gang
violence and they never know if they will survive the day. They have to deal with poverty and
homelessness. Most of them have a friend or loved one in prison. They look up to these people,
because they were protecting their own. They learn at a young age that the gang comes first.
They do everything they can to protect it, even die if they have to. If they die, they are heroes,
and they finally get respect. This is the biggest problem that Mrs. Gruwell facs. She has to find a
way to show the kids that there is more to life than what they have right now. She thinks that the
way to do this is to inspire them to learn. She finally had her breakthrough when she relates the
gangs that they are members of, to the Holocaust. The kids

Comparing Freud s Civilizations And Its Discontents
As aforementioned, Freudian theory links desire to eroticism, and from the outset, this
eroticism is evident in the earliest stages of our childhood, but where is this sexual fixation
derived from? According to the father of psychoanalysis himself, this desire is derived from our
parents as the object of said fixation. Wherein, the child desires to satisfy their sexual desires by
replacing the opposite sex parent. As a rule a father prefers his daughter and a mother her son;
the child reacts to this by wishing, if he is a son, to take his father s place, and, if she is a
daughter, her mother s. (Freud, 1909). In fact, if there are siblings in the mix this instinctual desire
can even be strong enough to cause jealousy between siblings, because... Show more content on

The Ego, according to Freud, perpetuates feelings from within us, and as such can be ascribed
certain traits. Firstly, the boundaries of our Ego are not constant; the Ego s central role is to fend
of displeasure from the external world. Wherein, the instinct of self preservation, and similar
constructive and destructive principles are preserved within it. Furthermore, our Ego s do not
necessarily die with us, using Rome as an example; we can see that certain developmental
constructs crafted by our Egos have survived to modern day (i.e., Law). However, it remains that
our Ego s primary purpose is to fend off displeasure, whilst maximizing pleasure; this becomes
known as the pleasure principle. Accordingly, the unsatisfactory tenets of our own mortality, and
the measures we are willing to go to avoid such displeasure are relatively drastic at times. As
displeasure can be brought on by three distinct entities: our own bodies, the external world, and our
relationships with other men. German novelist and poet, Theodore Fontane offers us some
examples, as there are ...three such measures: powerful deflections, which cause us to make light of
our misery; substitutive satisfactions, which diminish it; and intoxicating substances, which make
us insensitive to it. (Freud, 1962). Ultimately, however, despite these coping mechanisms, our
happiness and subsequent desires are ...a question of how much real satisfaction he can expect to
get from the external world, how far he is led to make himself independent of it, and, finally, how
much strength he feels he has for altering the world to suit his wishes (Freud, 1962). Therefore,
according to Freud, desire is all about maximizing the pleasure principle through the principle of
transference. These processes are inherently instinctual, as they are perpetuated through the Ego,
but no

The Mexican Revolution By Porfirio Diaz

Santillan, Karen
Research Paper
The Mexican Revolution was brought on by tremendous disagreement among the Mexican people
over the dictatorship of President Porfirio I. DГaz. Diaz stayed in office for 34 years. During that
time, power was in the hands of only a few people. The people had no power to express their
opinions or select their public officials. Wealth was also in the hands of a few people. Porfirio
pushed peasants off of their lands and had business men take their land, they called the land
haciendas. The dictator like rule of Porfirio I. Diaz and the want of land were the reason for
fighting in the Mexican Revolution.
The main antagonist of the Mexican revolution was Porfirio Diaz. Diaz became president of Mexico
in 1876. He was the autocrat who took full control of Mexico for 34 years. The revolutionist
wanted a democracy so they fought against his power. The political instability during this time
was also a major question in Mexico. Porfirio Diaz was very corrupt. He used his power as the
president to his advantage. The Mexican Constitution called for public election but DГaz and his
supporters used their political and economic resources to stay in power. He would often imprison
his political opponents or assassinate them just to keep his power over Mexico. This caused the
citizens of Mexico to increasingly oppose Porfirio Diaz and his regime.

The War Of The West Of Persia
Over the mountains that cast shadows on the small town far to the west of Persia, Seth drew his
first breath. The feast in his honor would take the better part of a month for the women to create.
They would have to labor over countless pots to insure that everything was cooked to perfection,
after all dignitaries from the surrounding tribes would be attending to see the new heir. The
village would use so many supplies, that it would take the men half a year to hunt and fish
enough to fully replenish their stores. Over the hills, Persian soldiers marched to a drumbeat.
Their swords had begun to feel heavy in their scabbards, but they took no notice. They marched

The Persian King couldn t believe the report. He sent three more armies. Each army left proud
and convinced they would win. They came back, quite interested in the dust they had
accumulated on their shoes, defeated and humiliated. The attention of the King soon moved
elsewhere, as he got tired of being defeated and the brief village war was logged as a victory.
Then, a great surprise to his people, the King died in battle. His three year old son was
immediately crowned king. When the new King was six years old, he found a book that
recorded the true fate of the thousands of men sent for the western horizon. From that day on,
he waited for the day he had full command of his kingdom. Having seen the records of the
massacre of his father s troops, he could see that the steel of Persian swords wouldn t get him the
secrets that his father had dreamed of. Meanwhile in the land of the Council of the Brotherhood,
Seth had grown up. He had a lot of responsibility on his shoulder, since his brother, Khalq Alkram
Alkhlwd who went by Alkram, was a major leader in the Council of the Brotherhood, and he
responded to the expectations accordingly. His brother had found one of the main sources of the
Council s power and Seth couldn t let his brother down. He trained every day with a vision of

Internet Addiction And Digital Dependency Among Young New...
Technology of the 21st century has had a strong impact on how society uses and conducts
themselves while using the internet, whether it is for social media, educational or for business

adults from the ages of 18 to 30 years old. Majority of individuals cannot go days or even hours
without checking social media or using the some form of digital technology. This is has resulted in
multiple clinicians, academics and even journalists claiming that there is a new form of addiction
impacting societies from all around the world. This addiction is internetaddiction or digital

The Paralysis Of Eveline
Eveline faces a difficult dilemma: remain home like a dutiful daughter, or leave Dublin with her
lover, Frank, who is a sailor. Eveline Hill sits at a window in her home and reminisce the times
when she as a child played with other children in a field which now has been developed with
new homes As Eveline was trying to make a major decision whether or not to move to Buenos
Ayres (escape) with Frank. She holds two letters, one to her father, one to her brother Harry. She
begins to favor the sunnier memories of her old family life, when her mother was alive and her
brother was living at home. She thought back of the moment she promised her mom that she will
put all her dedication in maintaining this home. And she reasons that her life at home and doing
all of those chores are hard, but perhaps not in the worst position her father isn t always mean,
after all. This memory is also important for another reason as it suggests that a bond (or
connection) still remains between Eveline, her siblings and her father. Despite how her father
treats her, Eveline still feels connected to him. This pushes her to escape from the fate and embark
on a new phase of life. Eveline s action, of dusting every week for so many years is significant as it
suggests repetition, doing the same thing, which in turn would suggest a paralysis within Eveline. It
is also significant that the dust remains. This suggests that no matter how much Eveline does while
at home nothing will change. Appears

  • 2. Constructing The First Transcontinental Railroad Constructing the first transcontinental railroad in the United States of America was arguably our country s crowning achievement for engineering ingenuity and determination in the 19th century. The railroad was a herculean of a task that required extensive proper prior planning, muscle, blood and tears that has rarely ever been seen before or to this day. In addition to the brains behind the operation and the labor force that drove this project to completion, the railroad companies (Central Pacific and Union Pacific R.R.) responsible wouldn t have even gotten beyond the first mile without the political representatives that lobbied on their behalf in front of Congress. The man by the name Judah was the sole individual that garnered government backing behind Central Pacific. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Penicillin s Discovery (noun) 1.An antibiotic or group of antibiotics produced naturally by certain blue moulds, now usually prepared synthetically. 2. A blue mould of a type that produces penicillin (Oxford University Press 2015) Penicillin was first discovered in 1928 and quickly became known as a miracle drug. Penicillin s areas of largest significance fall into three categories and this essay will briefly outline how Penicillin s discovery contributed historically, scientifically and in the military, particularly in the Second World War. The history of Penicillin s discovery can be accredited to fate, luck or just poor hygiene. It was Alexander Fleming who happened across Penicillin in September 1928 at St Mary s Hospital Medical School (Wood 2010, В¶14). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Meanwhile, the Oxford team was also using creative methods with the equipment at hand to culture Penicillin; making use of bed pans, milk churns and baths all rigged together. They were finally able to purify what they thought was enough for the first human trial on 12 February 1941. Albert Alexander, a policeman suffering from a severe infection was Penicillin s first patient. After seeing the results of this miracle drug it was obvious that if they had enough for a full course of the antibiotic, he would have been practically pulled from his deathbed to a full recovery. Unfortunately after receiving injections for 4 days, the realisation occurred that there was simply not enough to cure him and he later relapsed in the beginning of March (Wood 2010, В¶16 21). The Columbia team wasn t far behind them, when on 5 May 1941 they presented findings at a meeting of American Society for Clinical Investigation, after trailing on several patients. These findings made the front page of several newspapers, including the New York Times on 7 May 1941 (Oatman 2005, В¶14, 15). Penicillin was on its way to making global ... • 7. Index of Economic Freedom Essay The steady stream of current world events provides us with the signs to be read if we only take the time and the intention to pay attention to those lessons. The economic view provides a robust language for understanding the basic physical reality of scarcity, and the varied human beliefs and responses we take as we attempt to deal with that scarcity. As Smith and Ricardo teach us, the subtle and important understanding lies in the space between what human desires dictate in the personal scale, in the short run; and what consequences play out on the grand scale, in the long run. Stand up comedy industry Essay Title Stand up comedy industry Thesis 1: From an industrial organization point of view, the stand up comedy market structure in the 1980s can be characterized as an oligopoly The structure of a market, thus how a market is functioning, is the concept behind the industrial organization theory . The Industrial Organization (IO) theory is about, how a structure of a market has an influence on the strategy and decision making of a company. 1 The theory therefore focusses on the market wherein the company operates and links the decisions of the company to the market. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1975 such a diachronic dialectic was found for the first time in de music industry by Peterson and Berger. They saw an active interaction/connection between small and large firms, which influenced the market. While the large firms were competing with each other, niches opened up and were filled by smaller firms. But unlike the music industry and the American film industry (Mezias Mezias, 2000), there is not a diachronic dialectic between small firms and large firms in the stand up comedy industry. According to the resource partitioning theory, a theory conceptualized by Caroll in 1985, this dialectic exists when the big firms are competing with each other. Just a few of these generalists survive and they move forward toward the centre of the market. Because of this movement small pockets of resources open up, where smaller firms can thrive (Vermeulen Bruggeman, 2000). However, in the stand up comedy industry it is difficult to underestimate large and small firms, instead we distinguish comedians and the media they use to reach their audience. Hence it weren t large firms causing the opening of the niches for smaller firms. Instead it has been the increase of the use of media over the past couple decades that has stimulated the creative industry of stand up comedy. The last fifty years booms ... Not only was there turmoil in the immigrants community, but it was also within the American population (About Red Scare). The Seattle General Strike, in February of 1919, was one of the primary events of the Red Scare. This strike was the first city wide labor action to be names a general strike in America. It began at the shipyards and froze the Seattle port, as well as started spreading fear throughout America. September 9th, 1919, the Boston Police Department went on strike as well. As the crankshaft rotates the piston will start to move down which will allow the intake valve to open so air and fuel can flow inside the combustion chamber. In this process, the mixture of air and fuel gets pulled in the combustion chamber. Compression stroke During this stage, both intake and exhaust valve get closed. Due to this, as the piston moves upwards, it compresses the air and fuel mixture Combustion stroke As the piston reaches close to the spark plug, the spark plug will cause a spark to burn the fuel and the air mixture. This will cause the fuel and air mixture to explode which will cause the piston to go downwards again. Exhaust stroke This is the final stage of the process where piston will move upwards to release the exhaust gas through the exhaust valve. At the beginning of this stage, the exhaust valve will open to allow the exhaust gas to release. After the final stage, the piston will be left up where it originally stared from so the process can be repeated. In oligopolistic markets, independent suppliers (few in numbers and not necessarily acting in collusion) can effectively control the supply, and thus the price, thereby creating a seller s market. This became known as The Fermi Paradox, which came from his surname and two Greek words, para meaning contrary and doxa meaning opinion, about a 100 years ago. The equation was formulated using R as the yearly rate of the formation of stars, Fp for the fraction of stars which possess plants and ne for plants that can support life. Also for the formula you need f1 which represents a fraction of suitable plants that can develop life, fi for the fraction of plants that are able to develop intelligence and fc for the fraction of civilization that is capable of interstellar communication. (Webb 2002) The last component of the formula is L which represents the time in years that the civilization will be able to devote communication. Teaching and Learning in a Networked Composition Classroom In her essay Technology and Literacy: A Story about the Perils of Not Paying Attention, Cynthia L. By doing so, I hope to demonstrate how the human component of the technology education equation the creative and adaptive abilities of the instructor, or humanware1 becomes an increasingly vital aspect of computerized pedagogy, especially as the power of hardware and software becomes more pervasive and perhaps threatening. Reams of books and articles published during the last two decades2 testify forcefully of the controversy raging over the impact, both positive and negative, that the infusion of new technology into the classroom is having upon the way students learn and teachers teach. Without any challenges to his power, he was able to practice absolutism, which is the concentration of power and symbolic authority in royal hands. With this power Louis XIV had many great achievements in France. He improved the tax system, religion, trading, and court life.1 Jean Domat was a juror who was supported by the king himself. He dedicated his life to explain and justify the importance of the role of absolutism in French society. The culmination of this work can be found in his legal digest, On Social Order and Absolute Monarchy. Many interesting ideas about the theory of absolutism can be found in his writings. It explains the essential environment for absolutism, defines the origin and necessity of government, and demonstrates the duties of the sovereign. Domat s theory first begins with the idea of a perfect society. It is one with a comfortable style of living for all in the nation. For this to occur, a state of order is necessary. Everyone needs to know their rank and work together to contribute to society. Specific roles are given to each person, and ideally they will all work to the best of their ability. It is in this environment that absolutism thrives. Relationships between the government and the governed are easier to foster when everyone has a duty and they do not question their place in the community. Because Domat gave this basis for absolutism with his idea of teamwork in a state, he is able to justify the rest of his theory. After providing the basis, Domat justifies the role of government. He starts by stating that all men are essentially equal by nature. This seems like it would argue against absolute power of government, but he goes on to find the differences in society. They actually appear in the form of things like social status, occupation, and relationships built. These factors are what gives rank and society, which in return prove the need of government. According to Domat, these dynamics also arise in nature. He explains, this distinction leads to a first kind of government in families, where children owe obedience to their parents, who head the ... Their power is impactful to the people under them and maybe big enough for things like countries and the world. The war in the novel and the soldiers who take place in it are greatly impacted by the people who have control over them. The soldiers do not agree or like how they run things. A larger theme in All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque is power is bad because instinct takes over. The first reason that this is a larger theme found in the novel is because in the passage where Kat is talking about his drill sergeant and how he is so mean. He explains that it is in our human nature to want to have control because they do the best in life. On the march back the order to sing is given again, and once more we start. The movie deals with the hardships that goes along with poverty in a bad neighborhood.. The director, Richard LaGravenese, did a nice job at portraying what the students go through (The Freedom Writers Diary). The teacher, Mrs. Gruwell, did everything that she could so that she could inspire them to want to learn, and live better lives than they have. These students lives are so much harder and more violent than most people could ever imagine. Mrs. Gruwell, a first time teacher, was in charge of teaching a group of misbehaved students, who had no motivation to learn. Most of the students in her class are involved in gangs. All of the students have lost friends due to gang violence and they never know if they will survive the day. They have to deal with poverty and homelessness. Most of them have a friend or loved one in prison. They look up to these people, because they were protecting their own. They learn at a young age that the gang comes first. They do everything they can to protect it, even die if they have to. If they die, they are heroes, and they finally get respect. This is the biggest problem that Mrs. Gruwell facs. Comparing Freud s Civilizations And Its Discontents As aforementioned, Freudian theory links desire to eroticism, and from the outset, this eroticism is evident in the earliest stages of our childhood, but where is this sexual fixation derived from? According to the father of psychoanalysis himself, this desire is derived from our parents as the object of said fixation. Wherein, the child desires to satisfy their sexual desires by replacing the opposite sex parent. As a rule a father prefers his daughter and a mother her son; the child reacts to this by wishing, if he is a son, to take his father s place, and, if she is a daughter, her mother s. (Freud, 1909). The Ego, according to Freud, perpetuates feelings from within us, and as such can be ascribed certain traits. Firstly, the boundaries of our Ego are not constant; the Ego s central role is to fend of displeasure from the external world. Wherein, the instinct of self preservation, and similar constructive and destructive principles are preserved within it. Furthermore, our Ego s do not necessarily die with us, using Rome as an example; we can see that certain developmental constructs crafted by our Egos have survived to modern day (i.e., Law). However, it remains that our Ego s primary purpose is to fend off displeasure, whilst maximizing pleasure; this becomes known as the pleasure principle. Accordingly, the unsatisfactory tenets of our own mortality, and the measures we are willing to go to avoid such displeasure are relatively drastic at times. As displeasure can be brought on by three distinct entities: our own bodies, the external world, and our relationships with other men. German novelist and poet, Theodore Fontane offers us some examples, as there are ...three such measures: powerful deflections, which cause us to make light of our misery; substitutive satisfactions, which diminish it; and intoxicating substances, which make us insensitive to it.
