This document presents a project to control the speed of an induction motor using a variable frequency/variable voltage (V/F) method. The project team includes 6 members and is guided by Arun Kumar. The system uses a microcontroller to provide easy control over and adjustable speed capability for the induction motor. It consists of electronic components, a microcontroller, and an LCD display. The motor speed can be selected and adjusted to user-defined speeds under various load conditions, with the V/F ratio maintained constant to keep the air gap flux stable. Experimental results showing motor speed at different voltages, frequencies and loads are presented in a table.

 Induction motors are widely used ac motors in industrial
area. Advanced semi conductor technology and uses of
microcontroller have made the speed control of induction
motor easier. The proposed paper presents variable speed
control application of induction motor using vf method.
 In this system, the speed of induction motor can be
adjusted to user defined speed. Microcontrollers can provide
easy control over induction motor. Microcontroller based
speed control system consist of electronic component,
microcontroller and the LCD. The system is tested and
experimental results are recorded for variable speed under
various load conditions.

Induction motor is constant speed motor at a particular frequency and consumes almost same power irrespective of load demand. Let's talk about two different load one is high load and other low load. AT low load motor is delivering the load with some current and thereby torque is maintained. If load goes high, to maintain the same speed and developed torqued, motor will draw extra current and will corresponds to more losses. If speed of motor is reduced corresponding too low load and is increased corresponding to high load, then substantial amount of power can be saved. And speed can be changed by changing the frequency of input supply.

In this paper a novel and simple algorithm for three-phase induction motor(IM) under Direct Torque Control (DTC) scheme using Classic DTC switching table for dynamic torque ripple reduction and space-vector modulation scheme for steady state torque and flux control is proposed. The proposed scheme having the advantages of low torque ripples as well as constant switching frequency. Simulation results are given to prove the ability of the proposed method obtaining good speed control bandwidth while overcoming classic DTC and DTC-SVM drawbacks.

The rapid adoption of automation techniques in industry has increased the requirement for better process control. This has resulted in many new applications for AC variable speed drives (VSDs) to control the speed and torque of driven machinery. Variable speed drives (VSDs) are also used to meet particular starting and stopping requirements. The objective of this thesis is development of Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) using the dSPACE DS1104 DSP controller board for speed control of a phase induction motor. The board enables the linking of the MATLAB/Simulink model to the real time hardware. We have the feasibility of injecting real time analog and digital data into the MATLAB/Simulink model, process it to suit our model requirements, do the simulation, study the response in MATLAB/Control Desk and at the same time get real time analog and digital output from the DSP controller board.

Due to advantages such as fast dynamic response, simple and robust control structure, direct torque control (DTC) is commonly used method in high performance control method for induction motors. Despite mentioned advantages, there are some chronically disadvantages with this method like high torque and current ripples, variable switching behaviour and control problems at low speed rates. On the other hand, artificial neural network (ANN) based control algorithms are getting increasingly popular in recent years due to their positive contribution to the system performance. The purpose of this paper is investigating of the effects of ANN integrated DTC method on induction motor performance by numerical simulations. For this purpose, two different ANN models have been designed, trained and implemented for the same DTC model. The first ANN model was designed to select optimum inverter and the second model was designed to use in the determination of the flux vector position. Matlab/Simulink model of the proposed ANN based DTC method was created in order to compare with the conventional DTC and the proposed DTC methods. The simulation studies proved that the induction motor torque ripples have been reduced remarkably with the proposed method and this approach can be a good alternative to the conventional DTC method for induction motor control.

Based on the popular constant volts per hertz principle, two improvement techniques are presented: keeping maximum torque constant or keeping magnetic flux constant. An open-loop inverter-three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor drive system that provides constant maximum torque or increased maximum torque and reduced slip speed at frequencies below the nominal frequency has been modeled, simulated and tested. Load performance analysis of the proposed system under different operation conditions was provided. These principles of operation are extended to the case of operation from variable frequency or variable voltage control method. Finally, the effects of the non-sinusoidal voltage and/or current wave shapes are covered. The results show that both suggested improvement techniques (constant torque or constant flux) improve the steady-state performance A.C. drive system with squirrel cage induction motors. The slip speed has been decreased and the starting torque and maximum torque have been increased, which means that the suggested control techniques can be used in drive systems with short time operating mode under light loads.

Abstract This paper presents the simulation method to control the speed of three phase induction motor by v/f method. Simulation model for speed control in both open loop and close loop is shown here because these motors are the most widely used electrical motor due to the reliability, cheaper cost and thew. Out of the several methods of speed control of an induction such as change of number of poles, variation in frequency, variable stator voltage, constant V/f control, variable rotor resistance, slip recovery method etc., the closed loop constant V/f speed control method is most widely used. Pulse width modulated inverter is the basic requirement of the scheme. Here first a PWM Inverter is modeled and its outputs is fed to the Induction Motor drivesA MATLAB SIMULINK MODEL was designed to successfully implement Open Loop V/f Control on a PWM-Inverter fed three-phase Induction Motor, and the torque is observed to be constant for various rotor speeds. Then a MATLAB model for Closed-Loop V/f Control on a PWM-Inverter fed 3-phase Induction Motor. It was noticed that using a Closed-Loop scheme with a Proportional Integral gave a superior way of controlling the speed of an Induction motor. AC Induction motor (IM) are used as actuators in many industrial processes. Although IMs are reliable, they are subjected to some undesirable stresses, causing faults resulting in failure. Monitoring of an IM is a fast emerging technology for the detection of initial faults. It avoids unexpected failure of an industrial process. Monitoring techniques can be classified as the conventional and the digital techniques. 1.1 PROTECTION SCHEME OF INDUCTION MOTOR Classical monitoring techniques for three-phase IMs are generally provided by some combination of mechanical and electrical monitoring equipment. Mechanical forms of motor sensing are also limited in ability to detect electrical faults, such as stator insulation failures. In addition, the mechanical parts of the equipment can cause problems in the course of operation and can reduce the life and efficiency of a system. It is well known that IM monitoring has been studied by many researchers and reviewed in a number of works. Reviews about various stator faults and their causes, and detection techniques, latest trends, and diagnosis methods supported by the artificial intelligence, the microprocessor, the computer and other techniques in monitoring unbalanced voltage inter turn faults, stator winding temperature and microcontroller based digital protectors have been recently studied subjects. In these, while one or two variables were considered together to protect the IMs, the variables of the motor were not considered altogether. Measurements of the voltages, currents, temperatures, and speed were achieved and transferred to the computer for final protection decision. A programmable integrated circuit (PIC) based protection system has been introduced using Microprocessors and the solutions of various faults of the phase currents, the phase voltages, the speed, and the winding temperatures of an IM occurring in operation have been achieved with the help of the microcontroller, but these electrical parameters have not been displayed on a screen. Nowadays, the most widely used area of programmable logic controller (PLC) is the control circuits of industrial automation systems. The PLC systems are equipped with special I/O units appropriate for direct usage in industrial automation systems. The input components, such as the pressure, the level, and the temperature sensors, can be directly connected to the input. The driver components of the control circuit such as contactors and solenoid valves can directly be connected to the output.

Variable frequency transformer (VFT) is used as a controllable bidirectional transmission device that can transfer power between asynchronous networks and functionally is similar to back-to-back HVDC. This paper describes the basic concept of a New Model Variable Frequency Transformer (NMVFT). NMVFT is a new technology which is used for v/f control of induction motors. A digital simulation model of NMVFT and its control system are developed using MATLAB. The out power thus generated in v/f mode has been practically verified for the speed control of a three-phase induction motor. Thus constant speed-torque characteristics were achieved.

Abstract This paper presents the hardware implementation of V/f control of induction motor using sine wave PWM method. Because of its simplicity, the V/F control also called as the scalar control, is the most widely used speed control method in the industrial applications. In this method the ratio between stator voltage to frequency is maintained constant so that the stator flux is maintained constant. As the stator flux is maintained constant, the torque developed by the motor depends only on the slip speed and is independent of the supply frequency. Thus we can control the speed and torque of induction motor by simply controlling the slip speed of induction motor. The complete control is achieved with the help of TMS320F28027 Development Board. One of the basic requirements of this scheme is the PWM inverter. The gating signals are generated using sine wave PWM technique. Implementation issues such as PWM signal generation, ramp control, v/f control, inverter design are discussed. The results are discussed based on the various waveforms. Abstract Nowadays, vector controlled induction motor drives with variable speed applications are widely used in order to achieve good dynamic performance and wide speed control. In this paper a new method of controlling technique based on Artificial Neural Network is proposed to improve the speed control of indirect vector controlled induction motor drive. Indirect vector controlled induction motor with conventional PI controller is developed and is replaced with Fuzzy logic controller to overcome the problem of overshoot occurred in conventional PI controller. To obtain quick steady state response and better speed control, ANN technique is proposed and implemented using MATLAB/Simulink. In this paper the speed, torque and stator voltage responses with conventional PI controller, Fuzzy logic controller and proposed artificial neural network based controller are compared and found that the proposed ANN based controller showed increased dynamic performance. This paper focuses on the development of a prototype of thruster motor speed controller which exhibits robust performance for an Autonomous underwater vehicle. H infinity based speed controller with particle swarm optimized weights for a sensorless BLDC motor which is used as electrical thruster has been simulated in MATLAB/ SIMULINK and implemented using TI C2000 Delfino LaunchPad LaunchXL-F28377S and BoostXL DRV 8301. A performance comparison in reference tracking has been done with conventional PI controller and experimental results have been discussed in detail. The percentage variation in speed with respect to reference speed of proposed strategy has been observed to be 0.65% whereas it is 1.1% with PI controller. It has also been found that the proposed control strategy exhibits smooth starting with better reference tracking and less torque ripples.

Adaptive Variable Structure Controller Application to Induction Motor Drive

Variable structure control is an adaptive control that gives robust performance of a drive with parameter variation and load torque disturbance. Variable control structure is a robust control scheme based on the concept of changing the structure of the controller in response to the changing state of the system in order to obtain a desired response. The control is nonlinear and can be applied to the linear or nonlinear plant. A high speed switching control action is used to switch between different structures of the controller and the trajectory of the system is forced to move along a chosen switching manifold in the state space. The controller detects the deviation of the actual trajectory from the reference trajectory and corresponding changes the switching strategy to restore the tracking. Prominent characteristics such as invariance, robustness, order reduction, and control chattering are discussed in detail. Methods for coping with chattering are presented. Both linear and nonlinear systems are considered. By using Variable structure controller to control the step change in reference speed and drive system under load torque variations.

It is known that controlling the speed of a three phase Induction Motor (IM) under different operating conditions is an important task and this can be accomplished through the process of controlling the applied voltage on its stator circuit. Conventional Proportional- Integral- Differeantional (PID) controller takes long time in selecting the error signal gain values. In this paper a hybrid Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) with Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed to reduce the selected time for the optimized error signal gain values and as a result inhances the controller and system performance. The proposed controller FL with GA is designed, modeled and simulated using MATLAB/ software under different load torque motor operating condition. The simulation result shows that the closed loop system performance efficiency under the controller has a maximum value of 95.92%. In terms of efficiency and at reference speed signal of 146.53 rad/sec, this system performance shows an inhancement of 0.67%,0.49% and 0.05% with respect to the closed loop system efficiency performance of the PID, FL, and PID with GA controllers respectively. Also the simulation result of the well designed and efficient GA in speeding up the process of selecting the gain values, makes the system to have an efficiency improvement of 14.42% with respect to the open loop system performance.

Apart from other techniques Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, particularly the neural networks, improves the performance & operation of induction motor drives. This paper presents dynamic simulation of induction motor drive using neuro controller. The integrated environment allows users to compare simulation results between conventional, Fuzzy and Neural Network controller (NNW).The performance of fuzzy logic and artificial neural network based controller's are compared with that of the conventional proportional integral controller. The dynamic Modeling and Simulation of Induction motor is done using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the dynamic performance of induction motor drive has been analyzed for artificial intelligent controller.

Abstract Direct Torque Control of induction motor fed drives has become popular and widely used in industries due to fast and good torque response. Induction motors (IM) are simple in construction and are less sensitive to the motor parameters compared to other vector control methods. The conventional DTC is based on flux and torque hysteresis controllers. Induction motor is fed from a Four Switch Inverter generating the voltage vectors of the Six Switch Inverter by reconfiguration. Applying the most optimized voltage vector that produce fastest dynamic torque response during transient states. Fuzzy logic concept is a most efficient artificial integilence method which has high application in electric motor drives. A method to achieve fastest dynamic performance by modifying the two leg inverter fed DTC of induction motor based on Fuzzy Logic Concept is used here. This paper presents a rule-based fuzzy logic controller scheme designed and applied for the speed control of an induction motor fed from a four switch three phase inverter emulating the six switch three phase inverter. Due to the usage of the Fuzzy logic concept, the reliability, efficiency and performance of ac drive increases. Initial torque peak and torque ripple are minimized in the four switch three phase inverter based DTC using Fuzzy Logic. Induction motors are work-horse of the industry and major element in energy conversion. The replacement of the existing non-adjustable speed drives with the modern variable frequency drives would save considerable amount of electricity. A proper control scheme for variable frequency drives can enhance the efficiency and performance of the drive. This paper attempt to provide a rigorous review of various control schemes for the induction motor control and provides critical analysis and guidelines for the future research work. A detailed study of sensor based control schemes and sensor-less control schemes has been investigated. The operation, advantages, and limitations of the various control schemes are highlighted and different types of optimization techniques have been suggested to overcome the limitations of control techniques.

Due to its ease of controllability the DC motor is used in many industrial applications requiring variable speed and load characteristics. So the precise speed control of a DC motor is very crucial in industry. In this case microcontrollers play a vital role for the flexible control of DC motors. This current research work investigates the implementation of an ATmega8L microcontroller for the speed control of DC motor fed by a DC chopper. The chopper is driven by a high frequency PWM signal. Controlling the PWM duty cycle is equivalent to controlling the motor terminal voltage, which in turn adjusts directly the motor speed. H-bridge circuit is implemented for the bi-directional control of the motor. A prototype of permanent magnet DC motor speed control system using the microcontroller is developed and tested.

2.  Induction motors are widely used ac motors in industrial area. Advanced semi conductor technology and uses of microcontroller have made the speed control of induction motor easier. The proposed paper presents variable speed control application of induction motor using vf method.  In this system, the speed of induction motor can be adjusted to user defined speed. Microcontrollers can provide easy control over induction motor. Microcontroller based speed control system consist of electronic component, microcontroller and the LCD. The system is tested and experimental results are recorded for variable speed under various load conditions.

3.  Microcontrollers can easily provide control over induction motor  Voltage and frequency is varied in accordance with certain ratio, which in turn adjusts directly the motor speed  v/f ratio is maintained constant so as to keep air gap flux constant  Speed is displayed according to the difference between reference or selected speed and measured speed
