This document presents a student project on speed control of a DC motor. It includes sections on objectives, descriptions of DC motors and their components, different speed control methods, the components used in the project, circuit diagrams, a project video, results and discussion, and conclusions. The group implemented two speed control methods - armature voltage control and field current control. They found that combining these methods allowed for the most precise and smooth control over motor speed. The project demonstrated various techniques for regulating DC motor speed in industrial and automation applications.

3. INTRODUCTION
A DC motor (Direct Current motor) is a type of electric motor that converts
electrical energy into mechanical energy. It works on the principle of Lorentz
force, which states that a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field
experiences a force perpendicular to the direction of the current and the
magnetic field.
 In 1827, Hungarian physicist Anyos Jedlik built the first working DC
motor, In 1871, the American inventor Zenobe Gramme developed the first
practical DC motor, which used a commutator to convert the alternating
current produced by the motor into a unidirectional current.
 During the 20th century, the DC motor continued to be widely used in
industry, transportation, and consumer products . However, the DC motor
remains an important technology, especially in applications that require
precise speed and torque control, such as robotics and automation.

4. OBJECTIVES
The objective of speed control of a DC
motor is to regulate the speed of the
motor to meet specific requirements or
operating conditions. This is accomplished
by adjusting the voltage, current, or both,
supplied to the motor, which can be
achieved using various control techniques
such as armature voltage control, field
flux control, and pulse width modulation
(PWM). The speed control of a DC motor is
crucial in many industrial, automation,
and robotics applications, where precise

5. Essential parts of a DC motor:
 Armature.
 Commutator.
 Brushes.
 Field magnet.
These four components are the essential parts
of a DC motor. Other parts such as the shaft,
housing, and terminal block are important, but
not strictly necessary for the operation of the
motor.

6. Why It Is Required?
 DC motors are used on trains is because of their high torque and good speed control. Compared to AC
motors, DC motors can provide industry applications with a fine balance of strong starting torque and
controllable speed for seamless yet precise performance. Some common applications of DC motors include:
 Industrial Machinery.
 Electric Vehicles.
 Robotics.
 Home Appliances.
 Medical Devices.
 Aerospace.
DC motors are widely used in many different applications where precise speed control and high torque are
required.

7. Different Types Of Speed Control
There are several methods for speed control of
DC (direct current) motors. Some common types
of speed control for DC motors include:
 Flux Control method.
 Armature Control method.
 Voltage Control method.
 Armature resistance control method.
 Series-Parallel control method.

8. Voltage Control Method:
 By varying the applied voltage to the motor, the
speed can be controlled.
 This can be achieved using a variable resistor or
potentiometer, or by using a pulse-width
modulation (PWM) circuit to control the average
voltage applied to the motor.
In our project we have used a variable resistor or
potentiometer to control the voltage of the DC motor-
 A variable resistor, or potentiometer, is a widely used component for controlling the voltage supplied to a
DC motor. By adjusting the position of a wiper on the resistive element, the resistance of the circuit
between the wiper and the end terminals of the potentiometer can be varied, thus changing the voltage
supplied to the motor and regulating its speed.

Description: Third generation Power MOSFETs from Vishay provide
the designer with the best combination of fast switching, ruggedized
device design, low on-resistance and cost-effectiveness. The TO-247AC
package is preferred for commercial-industrial applications where
higher power levels preclude the use of TO-220AB devices. The TO-
247AC is similar but superior to the earlier TO-218 package because of
its isolated mouting hole. It also provides greater creepage distance
between pins to meet the requirements of most safety specifications.

16. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Our study found that all 2 speed control methods were effective
in controlling the speed of the DC shunt motor. Armature Voltage
and Field Current Control. However, the most effective method
used for speed control of the DC shunt motor is a combination of
armature voltage and field current control. This method involves
varying both the armature voltage and field current
simultaneously to achieve the desired speed.
The result of this method is smooth and precise control over the
speed of the motor. It also allows for the motor to operate at its
maximum efficiency by adjusting the field current to maintain a
constant flux density.

17. CONCLUSION
In conclusion, speed control of the DC motor is a critical aspect
of many industrial, automation, and robotics applications, as it
allows for precise regulation of motor speed to meet specific
requirements or operating conditions. Various control techniques,
such as armature voltage control, field flux control, and PWM,
can be used to adjust the voltage, current, or both, supplied to the
motor, and thus control its speed. The speed control of a DC
motor plays a vital role in achieving optimal performance,
energy efficiency, and safety, making it an essential technology
for many modern applications.
