Hiram Ulyssess Grant Research Paper
Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio on April 27,1822 to Jesse Root Grant and
Hannah Simpson Grant (Williams). His first name was decided upon by his maternal grandmother
while his middle name was an alternate form of his father s favorite literary character, whose name
was Odysseus (Schlesinger Jr.). His parents had three daughters and two sons after Ulysses. During
his childhood, he was shy but had a large passion for horses (Grant, 8). He worked on his family s
farm and attended local schools where he was not a very good student. In 1839, his father decided to
send him to West Point, an idea that Grant was not to fond of (Lincoln, 422).
When he arrived at West Point, he was recorded as Ulysses S. Grant. Some sources say he ... Show

In three months, on July 4 of the same year, the city surrendered. After his victory, he was promoted to
a general in the major army, and was placed in control of the Military Division of the Mississippi
River in October of 1863 (Lincoln, 423,).
The next month, he was promoted to lieutenant general and commander of the Union armies following
his defeat of General Braxton Briggs. Following his promotion, he pitted all the Union s resources
against the Confederacy. Predictably, the Union won the Civil War on May 9, 1865 (Lincoln, 423).
After the war, Grant served as interim Secretary of War for several months in 1867 through 1868.
During this time, he became permanently estranged from then President Andrew Johnson. The
estrangement was caused over conflict about the Tenure of Office Act between President Johnson and
Congress (Lincoln, 423).
Grant s political supporters were mostly Republicans, especially the Radical Republicans. In 1868,
Ulysses S. Grant was nominated as president and ran again Horatio Seymour, who was a democrat.
The popular vote was close, but Grant managed to win it and took 214 electoral votes out of the 294
possible and became the 18th President of the United States (Lincoln,

The Involvements Of Clean And Renewable Energy Development...
The involvements of clean and renewable energy development for diminishing gender discrimination

Abstract: Historically, the participation of women of Bangladesh in energy sector is negligible. The
gender analysis shows that energy poverty is a gender biased poverty because poor women suffers
much for electricity and modern energy services. In rural area, people depend on inherent traditional
energy sources like wood, straw, kerosene and cow dung for cooking and indoor lightening which are
very inefficient and unhealthy especially for women and children remaining at home who are
frequently exposed to air pollution due to this. Now it is a new challenge to replace these unhealthy
energy sources with environment friendly energy sources. The objective of this paper is to co relate
the gender equality and clean source of energy i.e. renewable energy. This paper concludes that though
there is no pure technological solution achieving gender equality and women s empowerment, in the
light of the social context of rural Bangladesh where women are discriminated can have full access to
clean energy source and modern technology which will

Personal Narrative On Marking Time
Philecia Rankin
Writing Exercise #1
Marking Time Leaving for basic training was the most nerve racking thing I have ever been through. I
already knew about the physical and emotional difficulties I would encounter going off to boot camp,
but there was one thing that no one really informed me about that worried me, the food. Everyone I
spoke to had their own stories about what I would or would not be eating, but no two stories seemed to
add up. Needless to say, walking into that dining hall I expected to see, or at least smell, manure on a
plate. However, to my pleasant surprise, all of the different but amazing aromas in there gave me joy.
When I actually saw what was on the menu, my day got that much better. In basic training those were

For breakfast there were eggs, bacon, sausage waffles and so many more delicious options. My
personal favorite was the cinnamon sticks dipped in warm maple syrup, although there wasn t much
time to eat them, I savored every bite. As my day went, on because of all the training going on, I had
no idea when we would finish or how much time we had left. Until I heard chow time , words that
made me smile because not only do we get a break, but I knew that we only had half of the day left.
For lunch the dining hall served hot wings with white rice along with your choice of sides at the salad
bar. The thing that made lunch extra special was the fact that we could have cookies. It may not seem
like much now, but at that time it was the only real sweets most of us had in weeks. Although I tried
not to show it, inside I was grinning from ear to ear. Then finally, there was dinner. Dinner meant that
the day was finished. There was no more training or exercising and I would be able to go to bed soon.
For dinner, pizza. That alone was the perfect satisfaction for me after an extremely long day and it was
enough to hold me over until

Construction Of Retaining Walls, Standard Compaction Test...
For this project I learnt and gained proficiency in several civil engineering topics like retaining walls,
Standard compaction test, Direct shear test and Geotechnical engineering methods, etc. I have done
thorough research before design work and got expertise in retaining walls its operation. I have taken
several examples as references available in academic books, like how to design and which parameters
to be considered, explained below in detail:

In this project, I designed and executed the construction of Retaining Wall to resist the lateral pressure
of soil when there is a desired change in ground elevation that exceeds the angle of repose of the soil.

In this project, Retaining Wall was designed to serve the purpose of supporting levelled ground. The
site mostly consisted of gravelly sand with 5 10% silt. This served as a backfill material to the
retaining wall. In addition to this, the backfill was filled with crushed boulders covered with sand
serving the levelling purposes.
CE 3.9
In the very beginning of this project, I collected soil samples from site to analyse the backfill material
and to determine the soil properties by conducting different laboratory experiments. Various tests
performed and analysed the back fill as follows:
* Standard compaction test (determined the dry density and optimum moisture content)
* Direct shear Test (evaluated C Ø parameters)
* Sand replacement Test (determined the bulk density of soil).
With the laboratory results, I analysed the wall by considering the Rankine s Earth Pressure theory for
different failure conditions like Failure by Sliding, Failure by Overturning, Failure of soil due to
excessive pressure at toe or tension in the heel and Bending failure of stem or base.
Tasks assigned to me and how I accomplished them:
CE 3.10
The tasks I did in this project are analysis, design and execution of construction work. I considered
design of more economic section of retaining wall. For this design I adopted the LIMIT STATE
METHOD, considered all the possible economic iterations in the material of the wall. I used to prefer

American Involvement In Ww2
Although the U.S. had yet to become officially involved in the war, most Americans supported the
Allies and saw the Germans as antagonists. Americans felt a connection to Great Britain, in particular,
because of cultural similarities. When the Germans sunk the Lusitania, a British cruise ship, in 1915,
128 Americans were among those who lost their lives, causing America to become even angrier
towards the Germans. At the same time, the British intercepted a message from Germany to Mexico
called the Zimmerman Note, asking the government of Mexico to declare war on the U.S. if war broke
out between the U. S. and Germany. The note also promised to help Mexico regain the territory of
Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico if Mexico declared war on the United States. This note was the final
push that caused America to fall into the want of war. Thus, on April 6, 1917, the U.S. Congress
declared war on Germany. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Assassination of President Lincoln Essay
The Assassination of President Lincoln The assassination of President Lincoln was so tragic because
both Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth both believed they were doing the right thing. Abraham
Lincoln wanted freedom for all because he believed that was right. He knew not everyone agreed and
that was why America was having a Civil War but he felt that it was the right thing to do. John Wilkes
Booth believed that there should be slaves in the south and did not agree with President Lincoln at all.
He believed that everyone really agreed with his way of thinking but they were too scared to stop him.
John Wilkes Booth thought he was doing the right thing he thought people would love and honor him

President Lincoln had a civil war arising, on the early morning of April 12, 1861, that was the morning
when The American Civil War officially began. Fort Sumter, was one of only two forts in the Southern
states that had seceded still under federal jurisdiction, it was brief and ended on April 14, and rebel
Confederate victory.
Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee also believed that what they were fighting for was the right thing.
Ulysses S. Grant, was the commander of the union army, he was fighting for Lincoln s. Robber E. Lee
was a general for the confederate army of Northern Virginia. They were both very good leaders, and
stood for what they believed in. Grant was elected President of the United States; Lee had Lincoln
offer him a job for the general confederate army. So they were both very good hard working men and
would stant up for what they believed in. Their appearance were much different, Grant he was a
sloppy dresser, but for Lee he dressed in a proper uniformed. They became famous and considered one
of the greatest military leaders in United States history.
Beaten down by the Civil War, and the stress of keeping the country together, President Lincoln had a
lot of things on his mind. Lincoln, during the Civil War was going through a lot of problems trying to
free slaves, and trying to keep all Americans happy. During the war he had to deal with the stress of
having huge amounts of Americans die each day.

The Pros And Cons Of Buddhism Being Vegetarian
Along with the pros and cons of a Buddhist being vegetarian, there are a lot of differences among
philosophy and region. To begin with, it s been alleged that the Buddha ate meat. This is a fairly well
attested fact. The issue of vegetarianism is addressed a few times in the Suttas, notably the Jivaka
Sutta of the Majjhima Nikaya. The Buddha consistently affirmed that monastics (monks) were
permitted to eat meat, as long as it was not killed intentionally for them. This goes back to the point of
kamma and intentionality. There are numerous passages in the Vinaya (regulatory framework monastic
community) that refer to the Buddha or the monastics eating meat. Meat is also regularly mentioned as
one of the standard foods. For these reasons, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This position sits squarely within a straightforward application of the law of kamma. Kamma simply
understood as intention. Eating meat involves no intention to do harm, because the harm has already
been done. As there is no intention, there is no kamma. As there is no kamma, there is no ethical
problem. However, not all see it this way. The situation in Mahayana is more complicated.
Mahayanists, especially in East Asia, embrace vegetarianism, often as a temporary measure for
religious events (Silk, 2016). Although the monastics are typically vegetarian all the time, special
occasions are cause for celebration. The motivation is, at least in part, an expression of the greater
emphasis on compassion in Mahayana. In practice, however, Mahayanists often adopt vegetarianism
(as do Hindus) as a rite of purification. This is done because of the toxins and purity of mind and body
talked about earlier in the essay. This is despite such texts as the Amagandha Sutta of the Sutta Nipata,
where the Buddha insists that eating meat is not a source of spiritual impurity (Silk, 2016). However
Tibetan monastics usually eat meat. Vegetarianism and Buddhism seems to vary depending on both
how one interprets an ancient text, as well as where one is located and the type of Buddhist they

Cyber Threats And The Cyber Threat
In recent years information security and privacy have come to be topics of high importance with rapid
technological advancements. Technology has provided vast areas of opportunities, but these have also
brought along unprecedented threats. Since the Morris worm in the 1980 s cyber threat has grown
from isolated incidents to high profile attacks on major government and private organizations. Cyber
threats can be classified broadly into three distinct areas  Cyber crime intentional attacks carried out
by individuals or groups of individuals with specific objectives of acquiring money, data or causing
disruption.  Cyber war an attack conducted by a nation against another nation with the objective to

Two popular and large scale self propagating worms in 2001 are Code Red and NIMDA. The
motivation for the attackers of both these worms were to gain notoriety and fame. Code Red exploited
buffer overflow vulnerability in the IIS server of Microsoft. NIMDA on the other hand used multiple
propagation techniques such as email, network sharing, exploiting directory traversal vulnerabilities of
Microsoft IIS server. These widespread attacks led to the adoption of Intrusion detection systems. 3.
Monetary benefit The third phase began around 2004 with the social engineering technique of
phishing. The attacks attempted the victims to reveal passwords, identity information and payment
card details which would then be used to extract money. 4. Threat and destruction The phase began in
2007/08 with the distributed denial of service attacks launched against Georgia and Estonia. The
significant attack in this phase was in 2010 with the Stuxnet, the first malware that was able to
compromise industrial control systems. This was significant because it showed that cyber threats were
now not limited to servers, software, data and continuity but affected safety as well. Around this same
time started the Advanced Persistent Threats. 5. Future Cyber attacks have become increasingly
sophisticated and varied targeting various high profile multinational companies. The target until now
has been financial information and other critical

Duck Creek Watershed Essay
Background (1 ¶): What is the Duck Creek Watershed? What problems is it facing? What is being
done so far to remedy these problems? Who is working on this problem?
The Duck Creek watershed in Scott County, IA is currently facing high levels of Escherichia coli (E.
coli) bacteria contamination. This pollution has put the watershed on the impaired waters list for the
state of Iowa. The impaired waters list is a comprehensive list of every waterway in a state that has a
contamination problem according to EPA regulations (insert source for impaired waters explanation
EPA regulations). Much of the pollution that can be found in the Duck Creek watershed is coming
from nonpoint source (NPS) pollution. Nonpoint source pollution significantly contributes to the
deterioration of water quality due to the difficulty in identifying, assessing and controlling the sources
of this type of pollution (citation Wang). This pollution is caused by runoff moving over the land. It
picks up and carries away natural and human made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes,
streams, rivers, wetlands and even our underground sources of drinking water (citation SCSWCD).
Examples of nonpoint sources in the watershed could include failing septic systems, livestock access
to streams, pastures full of manure, fertilizers applied to crops, miscellaneous urban sources such as
gasoline or oil, pet waste, and wildlife (citation SCSWCD). Another source of NPS pollution is that

Noise generated by electronic devices varies greatly, as it can be produced by several different effects.
Thermal noise is unavoidable at non zero temperature, while other types depend mostly on device type
or manufacturing quality and semiconductor defects, such as conductance fluctuations, including 1/f
noise. 16. Explain the difference between external and internal noise.
Internal Noise is that which a system generates on its own. For example in MicroProcessor,
Inductance of lines connecting different gates or coupling capacitance between different lines may
produce noise. In some systems, thermal excitation and deexcitation of Electrons may produce Noise.
In Most Cases, such Noise is unavoidable. For example, if we are amplifying a signal by normal
Amplifier, which has certain internal Noise, and if We make gain large to improve signal to Noise
ratio, Noise gain will also increase!!! External Noise on the other hand comes from some external
source. For example, in Microprocessor system, ripple voltage from power supply or voltage spikes
may produce noise. This noise can often be reduced easily and may even be suppressed.

There is no definite answer as to why Argentina went into such an economic crisis, but looking at its
tumultuous history gives clues and possible causes that could have contributed. When Argentina first
gained independence from Spain, all of the provinces fought each other until a very tenuous
democracy was formed in 1860. Along with a considerably shaky government, economic policies
generally caused more harm than good. At the time budget deficits were handled by printing more
money, so inflation was a constant issue that still continues to affect Argentina to this day. In the late
1800s and early 1900s, Argentina s economy began to increase, due to rising exports of beef and
wheat to Europe, made possible by the new technologies of railroads and refrigerator ships. During the
1930s, when Argentina was going through difficulties with its trading partners, it switched its
economy to an import substitution economy a largely closed, self sufficient economy, with high tariffs
and extensive government direction. This made the exchange rates become highly overvalued, which
led to a lot of importation, but not enough exportation to balance out the debt. There was low
economic growth and even more frequent inflation; percentage wise, inflation was in the triple digits
from 1975 on. However, in 1989, Carlos Menem became president, and

Analysis Of Stag s Leap By Sharon Olds
Stag s Leap
Sharon Olds is a prominent feminist writer in the American Literature. She was born in San Francisco
and attended Stanford and Columbia universities. Her first book, Satan Says (1980) received the
inaugural San Francisco Poetry Center Award and her second, The Dead and the Living, was both the
Lamont Poetry Selection for 1983 and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award (Olds). Her
writings have attracted leaders all over the world, and the most remarkable collection of her career is
Stag s Leap. (Kellaway) Stag s Leap, Old s most recent collection of poems is the winner of the 2012
T. S. Eliot Prize for Poetry, which tells the story of the breakup of the poet s thirty year marriage

Satan Says, her first award winning book is a feminist exploration of gender politics and adolescent
discovery. Olds Pulitzer Prize winning volume Stag Leap is a surprisingly tender look at divorce in
modern American culture. Olds poems often deal with the victories and contradictions of being a
woman in the United States during a time when the country has often been involved in racial
upheavals and military conflicts overseas. She investigates the victories and contradictions of being a
wife and mother during the era of feminism, as one of our most honest, most overt poets of female
sexuality and its relationship to family life and its place within the history of humanity (Brickey). With
the publication of Stag s Leap, it is very clear that Olds is writing about the sudden, unexpected death
of her 32 year marriage when her husband left to be with another woman. For a book about the
breakup of a marriage, there is a good deal of feminist going on with Old s characteristic scathing
honesty that will help to understand how this collection of poems has gained so much attention. Old s
demonstrates a poetic line with her magic and imagery lively as ever, and brings a new range to the
music sometimes headlong, sometimes contemplative, and deep. This collection goes beyond the
confessional, describing her gift of intimacy in a sense. After decades of being closed in her marriage,
she describes a love for her

Taylor B. Hart Abstract
Antisocial Personality Disorder is a very rare disorder. The criteria to be diagnosed with Antisocial
Personality Disorder has been changed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
throughout many years. The rareness of this disorder can be considered beneficial in the world
because of the way people diagnosed with it become and what they do to others. Many people
diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder find their self in prison. A variety of causes pertain to
this disorder. Very few treatments of this disorder seem to work of this that has been tested.
Researchers are still working on a better way to treat this disorder. The defense mechanisms associated
with antisocial personality disorder are quite common and the same during the course of diagnosis.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Antisocial personality disorder (APD or ASPD) is a mental disorder in which a person s approach in
any given situation as well as his style of thinking is neglecting towards others. People with this
disorder are commonly known as psychopaths or sociopaths. An individual with APD shows empathy
and disregards people s thoughts and feelings. Those with APD can be characterized as morally
reprehensible. They are the ones that seem to say all of the right things. Antisocial personality

Abraham Lincoln was a Hypocrite Essay
Abraham Lincoln was a Hypocrite
Abraham Lincoln was always known as a good and honest man. There are many other opinions that
refute this statement. Many theories say that Lincoln was far from good and honest. Throughout his
life he tried to do good then as president he tried to hold a nation together by tactics that could be
looked at as unpleasant. Abraham Lincoln is considered a hero to many, but he could also be looked at
to be a hypocrite and a racist because of his ideas about the Negro race and slave policy during his
time. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Harden Country, Kentucky. From an early
age he was known as Abe. Lincoln later moved to Kentucky with his parents. Lincoln always wanted

This clearly shows that Lincoln was not out for the Negro but just to preserve the union. He says in
many other debates that he thought the Negro had a physical difference from the white man as well as
an intellectual difference (Lincoln Douglas, n. pag.). Lincoln was considered by many in the south to
be a bigot, a white supremacist who wanted segregation and opposed civil and political rights for
blacks (Oates 21). Stephen B. Oates talks of many of the theories in his book, like that many
southerners concluded that Lincoln was with them in the matters of race (22). Many of these examples
show that Lincoln was a hypocrite of some sorts. He would appeal to the southerners by making
statements that led them to believe that he was against the Negro. Yet he was writing the emancipation
proclamation that was supposed to free all of the slaves. This also is debatable that the proclamation
freed any slaves at all. The emancipation proclamation is looked at by some as one of the most far
reaching pronouncements ever issued in the United States (Oates 25). Also it is said that the
proclamation freed few if any bondsman (Oates 26). Abraham Lincoln talked of the slave issue at
many occasions. He said that his paramount object

Different Levels Of Development Within The Middle East...
The perception of unresolved non water related issues with one s neighbours, both water related and
otherwise, is also an exacerbating factor in water conflicts. Israel, Syria, and Turkey, each and
respectively have difficult political issues outstanding, which makes discussions on the Jordan and
Euphrates more intricate. Relative development can inform the nature of water disputes in a number of
ways. For example, a more developed region may have better options to alternative sources of water,
or to different water management schemes, than less developed regions, resulting in more options
once negotiations begin. In the Middle East multilateral working group on water, for instance, a
variety of technical and management options, such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One interesting lack of correlation is also found in Mandel s study that between the number of
disputants and intensity of conflict. He suggests that this challenges the common notion that the more
limited, in terms of number of parties involved, river disputes are easier to resolve. Another surprising
lack of correlation that we seem to be finding is, somewhat counter intuitively, that climate seems not
to be a major variable in water disputes. This fact may be because water has multiple uses, but these
uses vary in critical importance, depending on climatic conditions. The hydropower or transportation
offered by a river in a humid climate is no less important to its riparians than is the irrigation water
provided by a river in an arid zone. An important aspect of international water conflicts is how water
is controlled within each of the countries involved. Whether control of the resource is vested at the
national level, as in the Middle East, the state level, as in India, or at the sub state level, as in the
United States, informs the complication of international dialog. Also, where control is vested
institutionally is important. In Israel, for example, the Water Commissioner for years was under the
authority of the Ministry of Agriculture, whereas Jordanian control is at the ministerial level, with the
Ministry of Water. These respective institutional settings can make internal

Europeans, for example, have been highly skeptical of any benefits they might gain from GM foods.
Many nations in the European Union (EU) have effectively banned imports of what they refer to as
Frankenfoods, a reference to the famous story of the fictional monster assembled by Dr. Frankenstein
from miscellaneous spare parts. The U.S claims that the EU s anti GM food policy violates free trade
laws.
Many questions remain regarding the future of GM foods. Should they continue to be sold in the U.S.,
even though they may have unforeseen negative consequences? Or should the U.S. take a cue from the
EU and limit the selling of GM foods until they are unequivocally proven to be risk free? Do the
possible future health benefits of GM foods such as fruits and vegetables with extra vitamins and
vaccines built into their DNA cancel out any potential risks that the new technology brings?
Supporters of GM foods say that since there has been no evidence of GM foods harming humans, it is
reasonable to assume that they are safe for consumption. GM food backers denounce criticism of
genetic engineering as fear mongering. Besides, they argue, no new technology is without a certain
degree of risk. GM food supporters believe that the possible health benefits of GM foods overwhelm
any possible dangers.
Supporters of biotech crops also maintain that if GM food technology is allowed to develop, it may
prove to be instrumental in eliminating world hunger.

The Issues Some Have with Surrogacy
There are many couples in the world that cannot conceive babies. Surrogacy has helped millions of
families and individuals have children. Some people say that surrogacy is unhealthy for the surrogate
mothers and that it employs immoral methods for achieving pregnancy and parenthood; however,
surrogacy allows everyone to be able to have a child of their own even if they cannot physically
conceive one, it is beneficial to society, and it does not carry the same stigma as it did years ago.
There are four different types of surrogate parenting. The most common is Classical Surrogacy which
is surrogacy by artificial insemination using the intended father s sperm. In this type of surrogacy, the
surrogate mother is the baby s biological mother (Chittom). A surrogate mother has to be twenty one
to thirty seven years old. She needs to have two children of her own and has to have thirteen years of
formal education on surrogacy. Seventy five percent of surrogate mothers are married and one third of
them hold full time jobs. Over half of the surrogates in the United States are military wives (Parker).
The majority of surrogate mothers are raised in Christian faith with only twenty five percent raised in
Catholic faith (Chittom). Surrogates can be friends, family, or strangers who are contacted through the
many different agencies that have developed as surrogate parenting becomes more common.
Surrogacy allows everyone to have an opportunity to have children of their own.

Romanticism In The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
The romantic movement occurred in the 1800 and 1900 s. There may be some confusion or
disagreement on an exact definition but the overall movement focused on the individual more than
society, an individual s imagination and feelings (Romanticism), and ideal perspective on nature,
conflict between good and evil and some would include the element of the supernatural (Dincer 218).
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, written by Washington Irving, fits nicely into the Romanticism period
due to its eloquent descriptions and detail to the nature around the village, the attention and focus on
the main character and the addition of ghost stories and superstitions. These pieces come together to
build a story of conflict and adventure. To further describe how all of the pieces fit together, we must
first begin with the author. Washington Irving, born in 1783, was a well traveled and well educated
young man. He dabbled in the areas of law, family business and even a diplomat for Spain but found
the most success in his writing. Irving was considered the first author to write American Short Stories
(Irving Biography). The two he is most well known for is Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy
Hollow. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was written in 1819, contains elements from light romanticism
and humor (Dincer 219). The piece is about a young man by the name of Ichabod Crane whom tries to

The Beginning Of Enslavement Of Slavery Essay
The Beginning of Enslavement
After the Thirty Years War, Europe s economy was depressed leaving many laborers without work. A
life in the New World, gave European Immigrants a new sense of hope. Indentured Servants were
people who sold their labor voluntarily in exchange for free passage to the New World, and given
housing upon their arrival. They were willing to enter an agreement to work for a specified amount of
time, nor were considered the property of the contract holder. Alike in certain aspects, however,
divergent in many areas of Indentured Servants, in the early 1600 s Slavery began in America when
the first African Slaves brought to the colony of Jamestown, Virginia. Virginia was one of the first
states to acknowledge slavery in its laws, to aid the production of lucrative tobacco crops. In 1670.
The law that defined which people could be enslaved declared, all servants not being Christians
imported into this colony by shipping shall be slaves for their lives. (Norton, Mary Beth. (2015).
Initially, slaves were treated as Indentured Servants and given much freedom until eventually slave
laws were passed. When the slave laws were passed this had seized any freedoms that might have
existed for African Americans. The colonies began to reflect contradictions between Indentured
Servants and Slaves. More important, the laws began to differentiate between races: the association of
servitude for natural life with people of African descent became common. (Law

In developing the concept for the product, we thought of many factors that effect alcohol drinkers of
all kinds (of legal age, of course). We were going to provide a service to all those drinkers who love to
sit back at home and drink bar quality beverages without trying to make it themselves. It would be less

CAROTID DOPPLER STUDY TO ASSESS THE CAROTID ARTERY THICKNESS IN
END STAGE RENAL DISEASE PATIENTS ON HEMODIALYSIS
INTRODUCTION:
Cardiovascular diseases are frequently associated with chronic kidney disease patients on
hemodialysis, and it is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in this group of patients. The
spectrum of cardiovascular diseases range from arterial vascular diseases to cardiomyopathy. Arterial
vascular diseases are prevalent in chronic kidney patients, as it is caused by atherosclerosis and
vascular calcification. Accelerated atherosclerosis and vascular calcification are frequent in the
medium sized vessels in chronic kidney disease patients.[1] The increase in thickness of the intima
media layers of carotid arteries can be a predictor of coronary atherosclerosis and is also a prognostic
factor for cardiovascular accidents.[2][3]
Numerous studies have shown a direct correlation of the carotid artery thickness and the
cardiovascular risk in ESRD patients.
Carotid artery disease thickness is assessed as a part of ESRD pre transplant patient with high

Color Purple Archetypes
Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple, portrays the main character Celie as an introverted butterfly
who has yet to come out of her cocoon, hiding away from confrontation and actions that could cause
negative reactions. As the story progresses, she blossoms before the reader, becoming more present in
her world where she would otherwise be shuttered in. Her character development is due to the
introduction of two very empowering and independent women, acting as female archetypes
throughout the novel. Shug, a woman with a fiery personality that ignites inspiration in Celie to
further herself as a woman, is the main focal point of the female archetype in this novel. Celie wants
to change herself; not to fit into the mold in which Shug has pushed herself into, but to better her life.
Shug s personality was able to rid Celie of the internal dark cloud living inside her. Shug is clearly

Evolution And Theory Of Evolution
Introduction
Humans have questioned their origins since the beginning of time and in the process, come up with a
variety of theories to answer the age old question, Where do we come from? The theory of evolution
is just one of the many theories written over the centuries that attempts to answer this question;
however, it holds the distinction of being the only theory accepted as scientifically true in today s
world. This paper will discuss the theory of evolution in detail; topics addressed include defining the
theory of evolution and explaining how the theory has evolved over time, as well as highlighting the
theory s strengths and weaknesses and examining how effective the theory is in today s world.
I. Description of the theory The theory of evolution explains how all of the living species on Earth
came to exist as they do today. Credited to Charles Darwin, the theory of evolution states that all the
living species of today humans included evolved over time; we can see evidence of their evolution in
the fossils of now extinct species. In his book Origin of Species, published in 1859, Darwin wrote that
species evolve over time through a mechanism known as natural selection. Basically, each species is
born with a multitude of traits, some more favorable to survival than others. Because some traits
encourage survival more so than others, the animals equipped with those traits tend to breed more than
the animals that lack those traits. Over time, more and more

definition applied to their unique position of culture is brought about by the Native American and
Spanish ancestry. Ambivalence is shown even by the word Hispanic, which is an umbrella term. The

She represents the Native American minority culture and Christianity as a curandera. She is a Native
American spiritual healer who is derived from Rudolfo Anaya s own experience, of a woman who was
said to have powers to cure sickness (Hispanic Biography 42). The syncretism of Ultima s Christ like
abilities are given in two illustrations.
Ultima s Christ like nature is displayed through her abilities, or powers as a curandera to perform
miracles. Ultima s powers are shown in the text as being good; although, it is confusing to say whether
her powers are coming from Christianity, or witchcraft? To illustrate the issue of this comparison to
Christ, Antonio s mother recalls Ultima s powers saying, I have seen her work miracles. She learned
from the flying man from Las Pasturas (Anaya 85). The incongruity of this statement to that of
Christianity is clear cut. According to the Dictionary of Hispanic Biography, Anaya acquired the myth
and superstitions from his family who lived in Pastura about a women like Ultima, who could heal
(42). From Anaya s experience, syncretism of miracles and elements of superstition in folk
Catholicism is apparently true. However, the only one to perform miracles in Christianity is Christ.
To further illustrate the comparison of Ultima to Christ is the aura of power Ultima s character seems
to possess, and to which she gains respect as a healer. The instance in the text where

Devices In The Oral Tradition In Homer s The Odyssey
Homer The Odyssey
Homer s epic poem, The Odyssey, was originally performed as a song. The poem is full of devices and
compositional techniques that were used by the poet and which contributed to the oral tradition of the
poem. Other methods were used by the improvising poet in order to make the task easier as well as to
lyrically improve the story which was being narrated. The Odyssey is made up of 24 books,
representing the 24 letters of the greek alphabet. The poem was originally performed by a bard and the
poem would be performed partly, depending on the request of the audience.
According to Foley John Miles (2007), regardless of the versions which we have today of The Illiad or

For instance, the scene where Odysseus is taking revenge in the suitors is very violent, and the poet
does not spare us any part of it. As he spoke his strong hand reached for a sword that lay nearby a
sword Agelaus had dropped when he was killed. The soothsayer was struck full in the neck. His lips
were still forming words when his lopped head rolled in the dust. (Homer, The Odyssey, Book 22,
lines 348 352, translated by Stanley Lombardo) since the poem was an oral one, the performer had to
make sure that the audience understand fully the scenes being narrated, thus bringing to life those
actions, even though they are detailed and violent.
Therefore, we can clearly say that Homer s epic poem, The Odyssey, strictly follows the oral tradition
as we know it and has reached us today in a physical format, as close as possible to the original poem.
The oral technique has not been disrupted in any way. Despite it being in a written form, the devices
and compositional techniques originally used by the poet has been respected and are vividly present

Fall in e book industry Only 5 years ago; experts predicted a decline in the book industry, with the rise
of I pads, Kindle and other online reading devices. But, actually there is an opposite trend now. With
the increase in rise of e books and in the US alone the share of e books sales fell to 20 %. While, the
physical books sales rose over 4.8% to $2 billion. Bertelsmann has over 115,000 audio books and e

Rhetorical Devices In Julius Caesar s Speech
In Shakespeare s play of Julius Caesar, Rhetoric is the art of convincing and persuading people by
language through public speaking which is used in Julius Caesar s speeches. These devices are used in
Brutus and Antony statements throughout the play. Brutus is a conspirator who kills Caesar since he
fears that he will have too much power over Rome and its people. In comparison, Marc Antony is the
closest friend and most trusted to Caesar, who persuades the people of Rome against Conspirators for
killing Caesar. (Thesis statement) Brutus appeals to logic when he explains his actions in Caesar
funeral, where as Antony appeals to emotions, playing with the audience feelings to seek justice upon
the conspirators. Brutus gives a speech to the people of Rome to explain his reasoning in killing
Caesar by using logic. He claims that he killed Caesar because he loves Rome and fears for well being
of the people since Caesar was an ambitious man. Brutus expresses feelings by saying Had you rather
have Caesar were living, and die all slaves/ than that Caesar were dead to live all free men? (III.I.175).
Brutus uses rhetorical questions to make a point to the audience of saying that Rome is better without
Caesar because Caesar if he was alive they would all be slaves since Caesar would have ultimate
power and control. Brutus showing facts to the people of Rome, Brutus s argument becomes
influential to win over the audience. Throughout his Aboelfoul|2 speech, he calls Caesar ambitious

Ves On A String Virtual Lab Summary
ves on a String Virtual Lab
Google PHET and navigate to the waves in a string simulation. Or type in the following web site.
http://phet.colorado.edu/simulations/sims.php?sim=Wave_on_a_String Click on Run Now. Adjust the
settings on the simulation for zero damping, high tension, manual operation no end. Wiggle the left
end up and down by moving the mouse vertically one time returning to the rest position.
1. Describe the wave.
The waves was a pulse, not a periodic wave. The pulse appeared as a hump that travels along the
length of the string and disappeared from the window.
2. How do the individual particles move compared to the motion of the pulse? Watch a green particle.
The energy of the pulse was propagated along the string and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Reset the wave to oscillate, adjust amplitude to 100, change frequency to 30 and change dampening to
30. What happens to the wave?
What do you think dampening means in terms of energy?
With the dampening, the amplitude of the wave decreases as the wave propagates along the x axis, but
the wavelength appears to be about the same. The dampening must be causing a decrease in velocity
because energy is mechanical = 1/2mv2 and velocity = Asin (ὠt). As energy decreases, so will
amplitude. Decrease in energy can be caused by friction.
Conclusion:
The objective of this simulation was to create waves on a string by varying the amplitude and
frequency of the oscillator and to compare the effect of string tension, dampening, and how the string
is held at the end. If the string had no end, then the wave would propagate down the string toward
infinity. If the string was held with a loose end, the wave would be reflected back at the oscillator or a
fixed end, the wave would be inverted. When a reflected wave would combine with other waves
coming from the opposite direction, the wave amplitudes of the waves are summed constructively
(amplitudes of the waves are summed) or destructively (amplitudes of the waves cancel out each
other). However, in reality the waves are actually moving pass one other and emerge as their original
form. These reflected waves will continue forever as long as no force lowers their energy. Adding a
damping force decreases the energy of the wave, which caused

What Makes Burgoyne s Blundering Invasion
Burgoyne s Blundering Invasion London officials made a scheme for capturing the Hudson River
valley in 1777, and have New England.
The main invading force soldier was General John ( Gentleman Johnny ) Burgoyne who went down
Lake Champlain from Canada to New York to see his troops. Another British force was commanded
by Colonel Barry St. Leger who came from the west by Lake Ontario and Mohawk Valley. The British
could not move further south unless they took control of the lake When winter hit Canada the British
were forced to retire it. British General Benedict Arnold slowly retreated along the St. Lawrence river.
Burgoyne invaded America with 7,000 troops, was slow and deadly, had to chop through forest.

Summary Of Le Guin s The Child And The Shadow
In 1975, fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin delivered a lecture discussing a Hans Christian Andersen
fairy tale she remembered from childhood. In this story, a man burdened by cowardice could not
gather the courage to visit the house of the pretty woman that lived across the street. His shadow; his
dark desires and guilty pleasures, wanted the man to go across the street. Yet, the man did not want to
for he was afraid, this fear caused him to tell the shadow to leave. Thus, the shadow left. The shadow
goes on to explore the house of the pretty woman, and accordingly strays unaccompanied and
unattended through the world. Years later, the man and the shadow reconnect. The man discovers that
his actions have now caused his shadow to become his master , and missing that part of himself, the
man is executed. Le Guin uses this dark tale in combination with Jungian psychology and Daoism
philosophy to illustrate that a person and their shadow must interact and coexist with each other to
survive. Without this balance, life will be impossible. Throughout The Child and the Shadow , Le
Guin makes eloquent points about the importance of a person s shadow, Carl Jung s archetypes in
relation to the shadow, and how fantasy novels help children adapt to the traumatic events of reality. In
Hans Christian Andersen s fairy tale, the man is executed. The man had rid himself of his shadow,
attempting to hide the flaws that were lurking inside. For, in the words of Le Guin, The shadow is the

Puritan Argumentative Essay
The Puritan settler s beliefs in the relationship between individuals, God, and the community during
the seventeenth century in New England created a sense of us (the Puritans) vs. them (the Native
Americans and non Puritan colonists), who hindered the idea of a city upon a hill, the perfect Christian
community. From John Winthrop s sermon warning the first settlers of New England about the
retributions God would bring to the community if individuals broke there covenant with God
(Winthrop 17 20). To the way, those same beliefs, brought over by the first Puritan settlers, affected
the future interactions Puritans would have with Native Americans during the times of declension, and
their views towards them as seen in Mary Rowlandson s narrative. ... Show more content on

Casper and Richard O. Davies Individuals could do nothing about their predestination: God s grace
alone, not good deeds, determined their fates (Casper and Davies, 17). This relationship between God
and the individual would affect the way Puritan colonists interpreted individual success as a way of
knowing their fate, which separated the rich from the poor, who would not be saved (Winthrop, 18).
This idea of individualism would help create the mentality of us vs them, as seen in Mary Rowlandson
s narrative where she views the behavior of the Native Americans as savagery and describes them as
heathens as lesser beings than herself (Rowlandson, 19). The idea of individualism allows the Puritan
colonists to view the Native American behaviors as uncivilized compared to their own, which then
they use to interpret their behaviors as favorable to God and the behavior of the Native Americans as
demonized or against God. Which then begins to create a view of Native Americans as enemies that
hinder the idea of a city upon a hill or a barrier in creating the perfect Christian community. Which in
turn creates the conflicts between the colonists and the Native Americans as they attempt to convert
them into Christianity as seen with the praying Indians in Rowlandson s narrative

  • 2. Hiram Ulyssess Grant Research Paper Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio on April 27,1822 to Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant (Williams). His first name was decided upon by his maternal grandmother while his middle name was an alternate form of his father s favorite literary character, whose name was Odysseus (Schlesinger Jr.). His parents had three daughters and two sons after Ulysses. During his childhood, he was shy but had a large passion for horses (Grant, 8). He worked on his family s farm and attended local schools where he was not a very good student. In 1839, his father decided to send him to West Point, an idea that Grant was not to fond of (Lincoln, 422). When he arrived at West Point, he was recorded as Ulysses S. Grant. After his victory, he was promoted to a general in the major army, and was placed in control of the Military Division of the Mississippi River in October of 1863 (Lincoln, 423,). The next month, he was promoted to lieutenant general and commander of the Union armies following his defeat of General Braxton Briggs. Following his promotion, he pitted all the Union s resources against the Confederacy. Predictably, the Union won the Civil War on May 9, 1865 (Lincoln, 423). After the war, Grant served as interim Secretary of War for several months in 1867 through 1868. During this time, he became permanently estranged from then President Andrew Johnson. The estrangement was caused over conflict about the Tenure of Office Act between President Johnson and Congress (Lincoln, 423). Grant s political supporters were mostly Republicans, especially the Radical Republicans. In 1868, Ulysses S. Grant was nominated as president and ran again Horatio Seymour, who was a democrat. The popular vote was close, but Grant managed to win it and took 214 electoral votes out of the 294 possible and became the 18th President of the United States (Lincoln, ... In rural area, people depend on inherent traditional energy sources like wood, straw, kerosene and cow dung for cooking and indoor lightening which are very inefficient and unhealthy especially for women and children remaining at home who are frequently exposed to air pollution due to this. Now it is a new challenge to replace these unhealthy energy sources with environment friendly energy sources. The objective of this paper is to co relate the gender equality and clean source of energy i.e. renewable energy. This paper concludes that though there is no pure technological solution achieving gender equality and women s empowerment, in the light of the social context of rural Bangladesh where women are discriminated can have full access to clean energy source and modern technology which will ... I already knew about the physical and emotional difficulties I would encounter going off to boot camp, but there was one thing that no one really informed me about that worried me, the food. Everyone I spoke to had their own stories about what I would or would not be eating, but no two stories seemed to add up. Needless to say, walking into that dining hall I expected to see, or at least smell, manure on a plate. However, to my pleasant surprise, all of the different but amazing aromas in there gave me joy. In this project, Retaining Wall was designed to serve the purpose of supporting levelled ground. The site mostly consisted of gravelly sand with 5 10% silt. This served as a backfill material to the retaining wall. In addition to this, the backfill was filled with crushed boulders covered with sand serving the levelling purposes. CE 3.9 In the very beginning of this project, I collected soil samples from site to analyse the backfill material and to determine the soil properties by conducting different laboratory experiments. Various tests performed and analysed the back fill as follows: * Standard compaction test (determined the dry density and optimum moisture content) * Direct shear Test (evaluated C Ø parameters) * Sand replacement Test (determined the bulk density of soil). With the laboratory results, I analysed the wall by considering the Rankine s Earth Pressure theory for different failure conditions like Failure by Sliding, Failure by Overturning, Failure of soil due to excessive pressure at toe or tension in the heel and Bending failure of stem or base. • 9. The Pros And Cons Of Buddhism Being Vegetarian Along with the pros and cons of a Buddhist being vegetarian, there are a lot of differences among philosophy and region. To begin with, it s been alleged that the Buddha ate meat. This is a fairly well attested fact. The issue of vegetarianism is addressed a few times in the Suttas, notably the Jivaka Sutta of the Majjhima Nikaya. The Buddha consistently affirmed that monastics (monks) were permitted to eat meat, as long as it was not killed intentionally for them. This goes back to the point of kamma and intentionality. There are numerous passages in the Vinaya (regulatory framework monastic community) that refer to the Buddha or the monastics eating meat. Meat is also regularly mentioned as one of the standard foods. For these reasons, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This position sits squarely within a straightforward application of the law of kamma. Kamma simply understood as intention. Eating meat involves no intention to do harm, because the harm has already been done. As there is no intention, there is no kamma. As there is no kamma, there is no ethical problem. However, not all see it this way. The situation in Mahayana is more complicated. Mahayanists, especially in East Asia, embrace vegetarianism, often as a temporary measure for religious events (Silk, 2016). Although the monastics are typically vegetarian all the time, special occasions are cause for celebration. The motivation is, at least in part, an expression of the greater emphasis on compassion in Mahayana. In practice, however, Mahayanists often adopt vegetarianism (as do Hindus) as a rite of purification. This is done because of the toxins and purity of mind and body talked about earlier in the essay. This is despite such texts as the Amagandha Sutta of the Sutta Nipata, where the Buddha insists that eating meat is not a source of spiritual impurity (Silk, 2016). However Tibetan monastics usually eat meat. • 12. Duck Creek Watershed Essay Background (1 ¶): What is the Duck Creek Watershed? What problems is it facing? What is being done so far to remedy these problems? Who is working on this problem? The Duck Creek watershed in Scott County, IA is currently facing high levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria contamination. This pollution has put the watershed on the impaired waters list for the state of Iowa. The impaired waters list is a comprehensive list of every waterway in a state that has a contamination problem according to EPA regulations (insert source for impaired waters explanation EPA regulations). Much of the pollution that can be found in the Duck Creek watershed is coming from nonpoint source (NPS) pollution. Nonpoint source pollution significantly contributes to the deterioration of water quality due to the difficulty in identifying, assessing and controlling the sources of this type of pollution (citation Wang). This pollution is caused by runoff moving over the land. It picks up and carries away natural and human made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and even our underground sources of drinking water (citation SCSWCD). Examples of nonpoint sources in the watershed could include failing septic systems, livestock access to streams, pastures full of manure, fertilizers applied to crops, miscellaneous urban sources such as gasoline or oil, pet waste, and wildlife (citation SCSWCD). There is no definite answer as to why Argentina went into such an economic crisis, but looking at its tumultuous history gives clues and possible causes that could have contributed. When Argentina first gained independence from Spain, all of the provinces fought each other until a very tenuous democracy was formed in 1860. Along with a considerably shaky government, economic policies generally caused more harm than good. At the time budget deficits were handled by printing more money, so inflation was a constant issue that still continues to affect Argentina to this day. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Argentina s economy began to increase, due to rising exports of beef and wheat to Europe, made possible by the new technologies of railroads and refrigerator ships. During the 1930s, when Argentina was going through difficulties with its trading partners, it switched its economy to an import substitution economy a largely closed, self sufficient economy, with high tariffs and extensive government direction. This made the exchange rates become highly overvalued, which led to a lot of importation, but not enough exportation to balance out the debt. Many theories say that Lincoln was far from good and honest. Throughout his life he tried to do good then as president he tried to hold a nation together by tactics that could be looked at as unpleasant. Abraham Lincoln is considered a hero to many, but he could also be looked at to be a hypocrite and a racist because of his ideas about the Negro race and slave policy during his time. He says in many other debates that he thought the Negro had a physical difference from the white man as well as an intellectual difference (Lincoln Douglas, n. pag.). Lincoln was considered by many in the south to be a bigot, a white supremacist who wanted segregation and opposed civil and political rights for blacks (Oates 21). Stephen B. Oates talks of many of the theories in his book, like that many southerners concluded that Lincoln was with them in the matters of race (22). Many of these examples show that Lincoln was a hypocrite of some sorts. He would appeal to the southerners by making statements that led them to believe that he was against the Negro. Yet he was writing the emancipation proclamation that was supposed to free all of the slaves. This also is debatable that the proclamation freed any slaves at all. The emancipation proclamation is looked at by some as one of the most far reaching pronouncements ever issued in the United States (Oates 25). Also it is said that the proclamation freed few if any bondsman (Oates 26). Abraham Lincoln talked of the slave issue at many occasions. He said that his paramount object ... The perception of unresolved non water related issues with one s neighbours, both water related and otherwise, is also an exacerbating factor in water conflicts. Israel, Syria, and Turkey, each and respectively have difficult political issues outstanding, which makes discussions on the Jordan and Euphrates more intricate. Relative development can inform the nature of water disputes in a number of ways. For example, a more developed region may have better options to alternative sources of water, or to different water management schemes, than less developed regions, resulting in more options once negotiations begin. One interesting lack of correlation is also found in Mandel s study that between the number of disputants and intensity of conflict. He suggests that this challenges the common notion that the more limited, in terms of number of parties involved, river disputes are easier to resolve. Another surprising lack of correlation that we seem to be finding is, somewhat counter intuitively, that climate seems not to be a major variable in water disputes. This fact may be because water has multiple uses, but these uses vary in critical importance, depending on climatic conditions. The hydropower or transportation offered by a river in a humid climate is no less important to its riparians than is the irrigation water provided by a river in an arid zone. An important aspect of international water conflicts is how water is controlled within each of the countries involved. Whether control of the resource is vested at the national level, as in the Middle East, the state level, as in India, or at the sub state level, as in the United States, informs the complication of international dialog. • 27. Romanticism In The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow The romantic movement occurred in the 1800 and 1900 s. There may be some confusion or disagreement on an exact definition but the overall movement focused on the individual more than society, an individual s imagination and feelings (Romanticism), and ideal perspective on nature, conflict between good and evil and some would include the element of the supernatural (Dincer 218). The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, written by Washington Irving, fits nicely into the Romanticism period due to its eloquent descriptions and detail to the nature around the village, the attention and focus on the main character and the addition of ghost stories and superstitions. These pieces come together to build a story of conflict and adventure. To further describe how all of the pieces fit together, we must first begin with the author. Washington Irving, born in 1783, was a well traveled and well educated young man. He dabbled in the areas of law, family business and even a diplomat for Spain but found the most success in his writing. Irving was considered the first author to write American Short Stories (Irving Biography). The two he is most well known for is Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The theory of evolution is just one of the many theories written over the centuries that attempts to answer this question; however, it holds the distinction of being the only theory accepted as scientifically true in today s world. This paper will discuss the theory of evolution in detail; topics addressed include defining the theory of evolution and explaining how the theory has evolved over time, as well as highlighting the theory s strengths and weaknesses and examining how effective the theory is in today s world. I. Description of the theory The theory of evolution explains how all of the living species on Earth came to exist as they do today. Credited to Charles Darwin, the theory of evolution states that all the living species of today humans included evolved over time; we can see evidence of their evolution in the fossils of now extinct species. In his book Origin of Species, published in 1859, Darwin wrote that species evolve over time through a mechanism known as natural selection. • 40. Rhetorical Devices In Julius Caesar s Speech In Shakespeare s play of Julius Caesar, Rhetoric is the art of convincing and persuading people by language through public speaking which is used in Julius Caesar s speeches. These devices are used in Brutus and Antony statements throughout the play. Brutus is a conspirator who kills Caesar since he fears that he will have too much power over Rome and its people. In comparison, Marc Antony is the closest friend and most trusted to Caesar, who persuades the people of Rome against Conspirators for killing Caesar. (Thesis statement) Brutus appeals to logic when he explains his actions in Caesar funeral, where as Antony appeals to emotions, playing with the audience feelings to seek justice upon the conspirators. Brutus gives a speech to the people of Rome to explain his reasoning in killing Caesar by using logic. He claims that he killed Caesar because he loves Rome and fears for well being of the people since Caesar was an ambitious man. Brutus expresses feelings by saying Had you rather have Caesar were living, and die all slaves/ than that Caesar were dead to live all free men? (III.I.175). Brutus uses rhetorical questions to make a point to the audience of saying that Rome is better without Caesar because Caesar if he was alive they would all be slaves since Caesar would have ultimate power and control. Brutus showing facts to the people of Rome, Brutus s argument becomes influential to win over the audience. Throughout his Aboelfoul|2 speech, he calls Caesar ambitious ... Or type in the following web site. http://phet.colorado.edu/simulations/sims.php?sim=Wave_on_a_String Click on Run Now. Adjust the settings on the simulation for zero damping, high tension, manual operation no end. Wiggle the left end up and down by moving the mouse vertically one time returning to the rest position. 1. Describe the wave. The waves was a pulse, not a periodic wave. The pulse appeared as a hump that travels along the length of the string and disappeared from the window. 2. How do the individual particles move compared to the motion of the pulse? Watch a green particle. The energy of the pulse was propagated along the string and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reset the wave to oscillate, adjust amplitude to 100, change frequency to 30 and change dampening to 30. What happens to the wave? What do you think dampening means in terms of energy? With the dampening, the amplitude of the wave decreases as the wave propagates along the x axis, but the wavelength appears to be about the same. The dampening must be causing a decrease in velocity because energy is mechanical = 1/2mv2 and velocity = Asin (ὠt). As energy decreases, so will amplitude. Decrease in energy can be caused by friction. Conclusion: The objective of this simulation was to create waves on a string by varying the amplitude and frequency of the oscillator and to compare the effect of string tension, dampening, and how the string is held at the end. If the string had no end, then the wave would propagate down the string toward infinity. If the string was held with a loose end, the wave would be reflected back at the oscillator or a fixed end, the wave would be inverted. When a reflected wave would combine with other waves coming from the opposite direction, the wave amplitudes of the waves are summed constructively (amplitudes of the waves are summed) or destructively (amplitudes of the waves cancel out each other). However, in reality the waves are actually moving pass one other and emerge as their original form. These reflected waves will continue forever as long as no force lowers their energy. Adding a damping force decreases the energy of the wave, which caused ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main invading force soldier was General John ( Gentleman Johnny ) Burgoyne who went down Lake Champlain from Canada to New York to see his troops. Another British force was commanded by Colonel Barry St. Leger who came from the west by Lake Ontario and Mohawk Valley. The British could not move further south unless they took control of the lake When winter hit Canada the British were forced to retire it. British General Benedict Arnold slowly retreated along the St. Lawrence river. Burgoyne invaded America with 7,000 troops, was slow and deadly, had to chop through forest. • 43. Summary Of Le Guin s The Child And The Shadow In 1975, fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin delivered a lecture discussing a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale she remembered from childhood. In this story, a man burdened by cowardice could not gather the courage to visit the house of the pretty woman that lived across the street. His shadow; his dark desires and guilty pleasures, wanted the man to go across the street. Yet, the man did not want to for he was afraid, this fear caused him to tell the shadow to leave. Thus, the shadow left. The shadow goes on to explore the house of the pretty woman, and accordingly strays unaccompanied and unattended through the world. Years later, the man and the shadow reconnect. The man discovers that his actions have now caused his shadow to become his master , and missing that part of himself, the man is executed. Le Guin uses this dark tale in combination with Jungian psychology and Daoism philosophy to illustrate that a person and their shadow must interact and coexist with each other to survive. Without this balance, life will be impossible. Throughout The Child and the Shadow , Le Guin makes eloquent points about the importance of a person s shadow, Carl Jung s archetypes in relation to the shadow, and how fantasy novels help children adapt to the traumatic events of reality. In Hans Christian Andersen s fairy tale, the man is executed. The man had rid himself of his shadow, attempting to hide the flaws that were lurking inside. For, in the words of Le Guin, The shadow is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Puritan Argumentative Essay The Puritan settler s beliefs in the relationship between individuals, God, and the community during the seventeenth century in New England created a sense of us (the Puritans) vs. them (the Native Americans and non Puritan colonists), who hindered the idea of a city upon a hill, the perfect Christian community. From John Winthrop s sermon warning the first settlers of New England about the retributions God would bring to the community if individuals broke there covenant with God (Winthrop 17 20). To the way, those same beliefs, brought over by the first Puritan settlers, affected the future interactions Puritans would have with Native Americans during the times of declension, and their views towards them as seen in Mary Rowlandson s narrative. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Casper and Richard O. Davies Individuals could do nothing about their predestination: God s grace alone, not good deeds, determined their fates (Casper and Davies, 17). This relationship between God and the individual would affect the way Puritan colonists interpreted individual success as a way of knowing their fate, which separated the rich from the poor, who would not be saved (Winthrop, 18). This idea of individualism would help create the mentality of us vs them, as seen in Mary Rowlandson s narrative where she views the behavior of the Native Americans as savagery and describes them as heathens as lesser beings than herself (Rowlandson, 19). The idea of individualism allows the Puritan colonists to view the Native American behaviors as uncivilized compared to their own, which then they use to interpret their behaviors as favorable to God and the behavior of the Native Americans as demonized or against God. Which then begins to create a view of Native Americans as enemies that hinder the idea of a city upon a hill or a barrier in creating the perfect Christian community. Which in turn creates the conflicts between the colonists and the Native Americans as they attempt to convert them into Christianity as seen with the praying Indians in Rowlandson s narrative ...
