The Public Sphere By Jurgen Habermas Essay
In 1962, Jurgen Habermas published his theory of the public sphere as a way to ensure a
functioning democratic society. His theory operates under the assumption that it is possible for
people to engage in discourse while bracketing status differentials and to deliberate as if they
were social equals. However, Habermas idea of the public sphere was greatly rooted in the history
of bourgeois society specifically. Thus, the assumption that all citizens would have equal access to
engage in discourse in the public sphere today is unlikely. In North Americanow, the population
size is larger, the diverse interests have grown and the political and social powers have more
influence over each other than ever before. Beginning with a discussion of Habermas work, The
Public Sphere: An Encyclopedia Article, and Nancy Fraser s, Rethinking the Public Sphere: A
Contribution to the Critique of Actually Existing Democracy , I shall use examples from feminist,
indigenous and environmental movements in North America to illustrate the problems with
Habermas assumption. This essay argues that no single individual can temporarily ignore their
gender, history or private interests when deliberating in the bourgeois public sphere making it
impossible for individuals to engage in public discussions as if they were social equals.
First, it is necessary to define what a bourgeois public sphere is. When I mention public sphere
throughout this essay I am referring to Habermas definition. Habermas

Introduction
Ford may not be the most important president during his time, but he did more than some
presidents did for the people. One of them was raising their spirits and hopes for the people to the
government. He helped people gain confidence in their president again after losing confidence with
Nixon. He set new records and started getting the United States on its feet again after having a
very hard time in the past. He started his presidency with an oath on August 9, 1974 which he said

He married Elizabeth Bloomer Warren and entered the Republican primary in Michigan during
1948. November, he was elected to the House of
Representatives and was reelected every two years till 1973. In the House, he was know to be a
moderately conservative, hardworking member of the
Republican Party. In 1965, he was the Republican House leader.(1,page1)
While in the House of Representatives, he announced:
A Republican of the President s domestic policies...It s going to be rough going for him around
here. Congress will write the laws, not the executive branch. (3, page 29)
Presidency
After Agnew resigned, Ford was then nominated as Vice President from the House of
Representatives. About six months later, The Watergate scandal forced Nixon to resign. Ford set
records as the 1st president in history who had not been chosen in a national election as President or
Vice President. He soon pardoned Nixon for the crimes he might of commited during office. Ford
wanted people to look ahead and stop worrying about
Nixon and Watergate. As soon as he got in office, the country had an economic slump which had a
recession combined with inflation causing a stagflation. He had other problems too, he had a
running battle with the
Democratic Congress. He had vetoed 61 bills and had 12 vetoes overridden.

Military Cabbage So Up Diet Research Papers
The cabbage soup diet is a fad diet done to aid in weight loss. It is said that a person can lose up
to 10 pounds in one week. The origins of the diet are unknown, and it first gained popularity as a
piece of faxlore in the 1980s. The cabbage soup diet has many names, usually linking the diet to a
mainstream institution, including the Sacred Heart Diet , Military CabbageSoup , TJ Miracle Soup
Diet , and Russian Peasant Diet . According to the American Dietetic Association s timeline of fad
diets, the cabbage soup dietoriginated around 1950, but it may date back even earlier. There is a
recipe for Doughboy Cabbage Soup dating back to World War I (1914 1918), when American
soldiers fighting in France had few other vegetables available and eating cabbage offered
protection against scurvy, a deficiency disease caused by inadequate vitamin C in the diet. The
name Military Cabbage Soup Diet is likely derived from the World War I soup recipe,... Show more

The Debate Over Home Schooling
The Debate Over Home Schooling
What is home schooling, and who is choosing to be home schooled? In this serious time of concern
about the standards of the public education system, it is found that in the United States, the number
of parents deciding to home school their kids is increasing. These parents believe that the education
system provided by their local schools is unsatisfactory compared to what they could do at home.
Home schooling has become more common in the past thirty years and has even started a trend
throughout the states. An estimation of a 235,000 335,000 increase of the number of home
schooled children within twenty years was reported by the U.S. Department of Education. Since
then, that number grown to an astonishing number of 1.7 million, and should continue to grow at a
rate of 15 percent a year. These numbers are considered low because it is not necessary in all states
to notify the Department of Education when parents decide to home school their children. Activists
such as David Gutterson explain home schooling as the attempt to receive an education at a place
other than an institution. Children who are home schooled spend most of a normal school day
learning in the environment of their homes. Unlike traditional schools, home schooled children s
parents are their teachers, which allows for variances in curriculum programs. Some parents choose
to follow a more traditional curriculum while others allow their students (children) to learn about

This campaign was originally run in Brazil, starting out in Sao Paolo, however the internet has
made it widely available to the public. The content of the image is undoubtedly an attempt to
garner the attention of not just the intended audience, but anyone who may happen to glance at
it. The image exhibits a dismembered finger, still grotesquely covered in blood, with the likely
intent of instilling a feeling of disgust. There is some accompanying text to the advertisement as

provided to give some sort of credibility and legitimacy to the image is the Universal logo add
following the text. Nonetheless, the advertisement holds no context to explain the content of
the image. For example, why is the image of a severed body part what relation is there between
that and piracy. Is the claim being made that music piracy can lead to you losing a finger, or
maybe a member of your favorite band? This advertisement was expressly released in Brazil, in
an attempt to combat music piracy in that region. There may have been a preconceived plan to
later release the image in other regions as well depending on how well it was received. At first

content. With continued viewing, one may come to the relation that this is a consequence of music

Why Do People Have A Near Death Experience
Have you ever had a near death experience? Did you notice any changes in yourself or things
around you? Many people have noticed monumental changes after their near death experiences. No
matter the degree of danger, they still realized common things. A near death experience can
transform one s personal life and beliefs. Most people who have had near deathexperiences have
five things in common: changes in priority, time slows down, not realizing they made a choice with
their actions, and things turned unexpectedly dangerous quickly.
Many people who have experienced near death experiences have had a change in priorities such as
Tom Benecke, Patrick Daniels, and Scott Lear. Before Tom Benecke had his near death experience
,
his main priority was finishing his work instead of spending time with his wife. After he almost
fell from a ledge that was outside his window, he realized that he was putting things before his
wife and decided to stop working and go to the movies with his wife. Patrick Daniels changed ...

How Physical Geography And How It Affected My Life
Physical geography has been broad subject that includes a lot of things occuring on Earth. I never
really thought about physical geography and its impact in my life until I took this course. Some
lessons coincided with topics from my other classes such as sea erosion and outgoing longwave
radiation. Other topics applied more to my life and somewhat affected my lifestyle. I think the
ones that made most of an impact was the tsunami warning lesson and the imbalances of outgoing
longwave radiation. A few times a month my cousin and I go to Santa Monica State Beach to work
out on the stairs. Just recently I noticed the signs that read Tsunami hazard zone. Coincidentally a

other fields. In the final week of this course, you will develop a handbook based on one of these
constructs. This week, you will choose the construct that you will concentrate on for this project.
The construct you choose should be based on the area in which you would most like to develop
your knowledge. Your choice should also consider your current interests in psychology and support
your future career goals. Identify the audience for your handbook and the main construct in learning
and cognition that will provide the focus of your handbook. Explain your motivation for using the
chosen construct as your focus subject as well as how this construct aligns with your future career
goals. Research five peer reviewed articles in the Ashford University Library focusing on your
chosen construct. These articles must provide sufficient information so that they will support your
work in the handbook. See the instructions for the Learning and Cognition Handbook in Week Six

Product/Brand decisions: Some of the issues Lenovo had to deal with in the acquisition of IBM
was how to capitalize on the marriage of brands and how to win corporate respect with the Lenovo
brand. The acquisition allowed Lenovo to move quickly into the international marketplace. Given
that IBM had one of the most trusted brands around the world, this allowed Lenovo to build on
past IBM s reputation. But Lenovo only had the right to use the IBM logo for five years so they
wanted to leverage that asset. The media perception of Lenovo s association with the Chinese

This became part of their strategy of a one two punch : building up the Lenovo master brand and
continue to strengthen the ThinkPad product brand. Just before the acquisition Lenovo had
negotiated an Olympic sponsorship in order to introduce the world to the brand. They would be
able to use the Olympic logo for marketing and promotion but this arrangement would come at a
hefty price of $80 million to start and another $160 for the additional advertising requirement; a
large sum for a company with $3.2 billion in sales. Lenovo would also be able to continue to use
the IBM logo for five years as part of the acquisition which they intended to leverage. The promotion
strategy led to a three phase advertising plan. First, they ran a worldwide campaign where each ad
ended with a mention of the ThinkPad instead of Lenovo to reassure customer and maintain the
ThinkPad momentum. The second campaign was labeled ThinkPad Unleashed which ran during
the Olympics to emphasis that the ThinkPad was being made even better. The third phase stressed
that Lenovo stood for innovation which is how they intended to differentiate themselves from their
competitors. In order to continue to raise awareness, the marketing manager studied brand tracking
research from 10 countries every quarter. They would chose product

Examples Of Forgiveness In King Lear
Nobody is capable of changing the past. A person s mistakes and the pain that they inflict on other
people are permanent and irreversible. The potential to repair the damage lies by changing the
future, not the past. Many characters in William Shakespeare s play, King Lear, realize their
mistakes by suffering, and attempt to correct them through good deeds. Lear s experience with
poverty helps him recognize his misconception of love and accept Cordelia s forgiveness.

Digital Immigrants In The 21st Century
Born in the digital age and surrounded by digital products, students today are referred as digital
natives who have gained specific technical skills and are fundamentally different from the older
generations in the way of thinking and processing information, thus they require a new educational
approach (Prensky, 2001). To engage with the younger generations, Prensky (2001) suggests that
educators, who are considered as digitalimmigrants, should change their teaching methodology and

Comparing Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet And Baz Luhrmann
There are many different interpretations of William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet that have
been made into productions, but only a few directors are able to interpret his intentions perfectly.
Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare about two star crossed lovers, Romeo,
a Montague and Juliet, a Capulet. The two families have had a feud for a very long time, therefore
Romeo and Juliet being together would cause them to be punished. Knowing the consequences the
two would face if caught, they still get married and eventually die for each other. There are many
similarities and differences between two productions of Romeo and Juliet, one by Franco Zeffirelli
and one by Baz Luhrmann, but the way the intentions of Shakespeare are... Show more content on

In the play, Shakespeare s intentions are for the readers to see the love Juliet has for Romeo. He
displays this when Juliet is speaking to Romeo from her balcony, she says to him that And the
place death, considering who thou art, if any of my kinsmen find thee here. (2.2.64 65). This
shows that Juliet does not want Romeo to die because she is very fond of him and warn Romeo
that he can get killed if he is found here, but Romeo does not care. Zeffirelli s production best
portrays Shakespeare s intentions because in the movie Juliet worries Romeo will get caught, which
will result in him being executed. She warns him, but Romeo does not seem to care and continues
talking to her. In Luhrmann s production, Romeo and Juliet both worry they will get caught. The
Capulets have security cameras installed near the pool and that is where the scene takes place.
Therefore, they both worry about getting caught by the security guard, which will result in
punishment for them both. In conclusion, Zeffirelli s production of Romeo and Juliet best
interprets Shakespeare s intentions for Juliet s concern for

Understanding Police Use Of Force
Understanding Police Use of Force Police Officer shoots unarmed teen to death. Police Officer
shoots unarmed teen to death who is violently attacking an officer. Which one is a catchier
headline? The first one may attract ratings or sell newspapers but it is not only unfair to the police,
it is also unfair to the public being fed this type of information. For years, news outlets have been
bad mouthing policeand their tactics because it makes for good stories. This type of coverage is
dangerous because it may cause police to not act as quickly as they should, and it gives the
public the wrong understanding about police use of force. The Police use of force continuum
can be easily understood by the public but, that will require knowledge of the subject matter to
include reasons as to why police stop certain individuals and proper ways to treat police during
an encounter. The use of force continuum is basically a stair step of levels of force an officer
can use to defend themselves and/or effect an arrest. The use of force continuum starts with the
level of force known as officer presence. An example of this is when an officer arrives on scene,
and his or her mere presence causes the subject or subjects to comply. If an officer arrives at a bar
fight and the subjects are actively fighting until they observe the officer then the use of force level
was successful. The next level in the use of force continuum is verbal commands. Police officers

Management Concerns Of Corrections For Special Populations...
Management Concerns in Corrections for Special Populations
Michelle Bergos
Introduction to Corrections 140
September 25, 2016
Jason Skeens Abstract
More often than not, if John Q. Public is asked the purpose or goals of our American correctional
system the reply is incapacitation, retribution, deterrence, and rehabilitation. However, what we are
really asking for our corrections system to do is to secure and supervise the individuals cast out of
society through the judicial process regardless of their individual needs and abilities. The purpose
of this particular study is focused on the management of special needs inmates and the burdens
incurred at various levels. For this study, special needs populations are defined as prisoners who
exhibit unique physical, mental, social, and programmatic needs that distinguish them from other
prisoners and to whom jail and prison management and staff have to respond in nontraditional and
innovative ways (Schmalleger Smykla 2013). The special needs populations included individuals
suffering from mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse and dependency, the elderly, sufferers of
chronic and communicable diseases, and physical disabilities. Keywords: corrections, special needs
offenders, management
Corrections and the Management of Special Needs Inmates
To say the correctional system is overwhelmed with the needs and care of the special needs
population is an understatement. Nonetheless, jail and prisons officials have

A research showed that students can spend more time in studying instead of walking home
(Zachariah and Joshua 1). Everyone is not born smart. Practice makes perfect. Students in boarding
schools can better arrange their own time of study and do not have to accommodate oneself to
family. For example, in boarding high school, students could choose their favorite time to eat. And
they will not be interrupted when learning. But at home, if the food is ready, the students must go

Gradually, their learning efficiency will decline. Therefore, students in boarding high schools could

Philosophy On Justice
Justice is a moral as well as a political concept. The meaning of Justice varies from one political
thinker to another. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a just person as one who typically does
what is morally right and is disposed to giving everyone his or her due. Philosophers, both modern
and medieval, went beyond etymology and dictionary meanings to understand the right meaning of
justice. The nature of justice as both a moral virtue of character and a desirable quality of political
society, as well as how it applies to ethical and social decision making were the most important
topics that were studied by the philosophers. Most of the philosophers had their own theories of
justice on various social issues such as civil disobedience, punishment, equal opportunity for
women, slavery, war, property rights, and international relations. According to Plato, justice is...

John Locke was one such philosopher who believed in this natural law. Justice requires according
individuals or groups to get what they actually deserve or what they are entitled to. Just like
Newton s third law of motions every action has an equal and opposite reaction , justice ensures
that every unlawful or unjust actions are met with such reactions that there is a balance in the
society and everyone gets the merit they deserve. According to me, justice is an universal and
absolute concept. Laws, principles, rules, religion are just some ways of explaining the concept,
with results that sometimes go against the entire concept of what true justice is. Justice is also
derived when everyone in the society has a mutual agreement over equality and the absence of bias.
John Rawls once remarked, Justice is the first virtue of social institutions, as truth is of systems of
thought. Justice is the concept of cardinal virtues, of which it is one. The association of justice with
fairness is thus historically and culturally

The Art Nouveau Movement
ART NUVEAU MOVEMENT
Art Nouveau on the other hand was a decorative arts and architecture movement during the late
19th century and early 20th century. The movement generated people who were enticed by the
movement throughout Europe and beyond.
According to Lemmen, the movement had a vast variety of styles and, consequently, it was known
by many names. The movement s aim was to modernize design, because they were to differentiate
themselves from eclectic historical styles.
According to Lemmon, the artists and designers of the movement drew inspiration from both
organic and geometric forms. Their elegant designs unified flowing, natural forms with more
angular contours. The Art Nouveau movement wanted to take out the traditional hierarchy of the

The designers of the movement felt that the 19th century design had focused mostly on

frivolous decorations.
The designers of the movement wanted to bring the belief that the function of a object must dictate
its form. Their theory was influenced by contemporary revivals of the gothic styles.
The practice was somewhat flexible ethos, but yet it would be an important part of the styles

The Art Nouveau movement was also known as the new art and it was a widely influential

Social Importance Of Oysters
Oysters
An oyster is a bivalve mollusk, found in beds in the shallow waters of all oceans. An oyster s
shell is made up of two valves. The upper one is flat and the lower is convex with multiple
outlines and a rough outer surface. Wild oysters will spend most of their lives attached, except for
the free swimming larval stage. Oysters and the reefs they form provide many ecological,
economic, and social benefits. The health of an oyster bed reflects the overall health of the coastal
ecosystem they live in. Not only are they an important part of the estuarine food web, they also
provide an excellent habitat for inshore marine life, and form important commercial and
recreational fishery. Oysters help control erosion along the shorelines and filter the water they
live in. These benefits make them an important species in the estuary. There are many different
species of oysters. Some of these include but are not limited to: Pacific Oysters, Kumamoto
Oysters, Atlantic Oysters, European Flats, and Olympia Oysters. Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea
gigas) are small and sweet. These oysters are the world s most cultivated oysters. They have more
of a sharply pointed shell than the Atlantics or European Flats. Today s Pacific Oysters are
generally named after where they are harvested. Kumamoto Oysters (Crassostrea sikamea) have
been described as small, sweet, and almost nutty. They are characterized by their deep bowl like
shell. Kumamoto Oysters spawn later in the season and in warmer

The main purpose of this research dissertation is to analyse brand perception on customers and
their buying behaviour within automobile industry. Brand perception is notably related with the
experiences of customers related with the product, service or company which produce and deliver
the product or service (Kervyn, Fiske Malone, 2012). In other words, brand perception can be
shaped through the practical experiences such as: speed, quality, reliability and availability, along
with the emotional experiences such as: good feeling, improvement of performance at home or at

Comparison of Whitman and Dickenson Poems
America experienced profound changes during the mid 1800 s. New technologies and ideas helped
the nation grow, while the Civil War ripped the nation apart. During this tumultuous period, two
great American writers captured their ideas in poetry. Their poems give us insight into the time
period, as well as universal insight about life. Although polar opposites in personality, Emily
Dickinson and Walt Whitman created similar poetry. Dickinson s Hope is a Thing with Feathers and
Whitman s O Captain! My Captain! share many qualities.

clearly symbolizes hope. The first stanza introduces the bird metaphor: В‘Hope is the thing with
feathers /That perches in the soul. The next lines В‘And sings the tune without the words /And

expands the metaphor by saying В‘And sweetestВ—in the GaleВ—is heardВ—. The bird s song, or
hope, is the sweetest during a Gale, or troubled times. The first lines in the final stanza В‘I ve
heard it in the chillest land / And on the strangest Sea describe the bird, or hope, as being
everywhere. The last lines В‘Yet, never, in Extremity,/It asked a crumbВ
—of Me show the
unselfish nature of the bird; hope never asks for anything in return. O Captain! My Captain!
contains a more complicated and cryptic extended metaphor. Basically, Abraham Lincoln captains
the metaphorical ship of the United States through the Civil War. The second line В‘The ship has

the Civil War, and the citizens won the prize they sought, unity. Abraham Lincoln

In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Books consist of more than just paper, books act as warning to society. Books put actions into
perspective, then they show the consequences of those actions. Books continue to make people
reevaluate their decisions, make a person feel, and books relate to real life. In Fahrenheit 451 by
Ray Bradbury the society remains dysfunctional and on the brink of collapsing; suicide rates remain
at an all time high, murders happen every day, information stays censored, the educationsystem
remains flawed. Now, all of these things can also describe another society, America. The fictional
society in Fahrenheit 451and America have many things in common, only proving further, that
America remains on a downward spiral. First, modern American society relates to the society in
Fahrenheit 451 through education. In Fahrenheit 451 schools have the kids sit in a classroom and
learn from a TV. When Clarisse a seventeen year old girl who lives next to the protagonist, asks
questions about the school work, the other kids call her peculiar. While talking with Montag, the
main character in the book, Montag asks about school, Clarisse tells him I m antisocial, they say. I

The Value Of College Education
The mindset of young people today is that school is, above all, a chore rather than an opportunity
to grow and be free. Today s youth will complain about classes being too demanding, but at the
same time continue to complain because there are no enjoyable courses. Schools are intended to
create a space where students can feel comfortable and confident enough to learn what they need to
live successful lives. However, this is not the case, as many students growing up, seem to be less
passionate about their actual education, and instead, are centered on the overall effect that comes
from receiving a higher education. Since currently job security and financial prosperity have been
so heavily linked with a college education or degree, young adults are strongly encouraged to go to
university. This leads them to have a desperation in order to succeed to ensure that future employers
will be tended to hire them because of their supposed academic abilities. This would then contribute
to the conclusion that to ensure the success of young adults, educational institutions need students
to see the value in their work ethic and the institution at a young age to then later apply this
mentality into the continuation of their education.
Lynda Barry talks to her readers that the school environment has the ability to provide its students
with a space to escape personal problems, like unstable homes. She expresses her belief that without
these foundations many young people, like herself, would

The Social Learning Theory And Its Negative Effects On...
The Social Learning Theory is a theory created by Bandura that often references children and

In the short story A Clean Well lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway the setting is very important.
The story takes place in a Spanish speaking country in a cafГ©, but more so than the actual place
the time is what makes the setting so crucial to the story. The story takes place at night
Hemingway uses this in contrast to the well lighted cafe with its artificial light. The contrast
between dark and light is the main idea of the story and it is best expressed through the setting of
the story. There are many different examples of this some are literal examples and some are more
symbolic. The setting is symbolic as well as literal. It is a place that is not safe after dark a place

A clean well lighted cafГ© was different for him. A bar or a nightclub, where music is played, is
for people who want the night who want to stay out and be in none respectful places. The older
waiter tells the younger waiter I am of those who like to stay late at the cafГ© with all those who

examination should include both the axial and appendicular skeleton.1 The symptoms and signs
of abuse range from neglect and/or deprivation, through sexual abuse to the physically battered
child or non accidental head injury (NAHI) also called shaken baby syndrome (SBS) .5 Shaken
baby syndrome is a common form of child abuse which often occurs when an adult violently
shakes an infant or child.2 Skeletal injuries are often the strongest radiological indicators of
abuse .5 However, it can be difficult to diagnose child abuse because many children and infants
do not exhibit outward signs of abuse. Some clinical clues include presence of bruises and rapid
unexplained increase in the head circumference of an infant showing nonspecific symptoms.5
Shaken baby syndrome typically exhibits symptoms of retinal hemorrhage, subdural hemorrhage,
and/or hematoma. CT and MR imaging often are used along with radiography to study suspected

Political Islam And The Islamic Islam
Political Islam is a term that was coined inside the scholarly realm to allude to the more extensive
group of political frameworks that are Islam oriented. The greater part of the states that draw on the
Islamic instructions to influence political and social elements of the general public are said to be
practicing political Islam. The vast majority of the practices will look for direction from the
Islamic conventions and the Muslim scriptural foundation to settle on choices that influence the
whole state and how it identifies with whatever is left of the world. While the term may not be as
old, political Islam or Islamism are old ideas going back to the 1920s. Gatherings, for example, the
Egypt s Muslim Brotherhood in 1927, are a portion... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The thought borne of philosophies that were presented by any semblance of Maulana Maudoodi
and Jamaat, were ready to make Islam a formula that would guide the contemporary life, policies
and law in a thorough and pure structure, a portion of the fundamental components still remain
while there are some subtle contortions particularly with terrorism. Political Islam has quite a bit of
consequences for policies in Middle East where Islam is a center religion. In the meantime the
essential elements of political Islam control how the laws of the states are produced close by the
way the states in the Middle East cooperate with the rest of the world. Political Islam is powerful
in the Middle East nations, controlling how laws, policies and global connections are managed.
Political Islam
Political Islam or Islamism is to a greater degree of a political outfit as the name proposes as
opposed to a religious develop. As indicated by Ayoob, a large portion of the general population
that adherents of the ideology trust that it is really a collection of faith, which has something
critical to say in regards to the order of the public and legislative issues in a contemporary Muslim
society and the style to be utilized to execute the same. For the vast majority, it is the manual for
living a definitive Islamic life. In any case this is entirely broad when attempting to reveal the

Pleasantville setting essay
Describe at least ONE important setting in the text(s).
Explain how the setting helped to show the author / creator s idea(s), supporting your points with
visual and / or oral language features.
The film Pleasantville written, directed and produced by Gary Ross shows a time period in
American History where life was more comfortable, stable and perfect if you would generalise it.
However, as the film ironically shows, this was a time when people were more ignorant, racist
and most certainly sexist. Ross demolishes this illusion of the great 1950s American society by
showing how its defects are gradually changed from black and white to colour. Ross uses various
settings to help show the viewer the imperfect aspects of Pleasantville s ... Show more content on

Betty is a clear example of costume change. In the beginning Betty wore the typical ladies dress
wear, big poodle skirt etc but as betty starts gaining more knowledge and independence she starts
dressing more elegantly and feminine .This shows the viewer that as the people of pleasantville
gains more knowledge they start to demonstrate the idea of The importance of change which is one
of the ideas that gary ross shows us through setting.
Music is an important signifier of setting and shows the idea of The importance of change
clearly throughout the film. When Jen and David first enter Pleasantville the recurring songs
and motifs for example Take 5 by Dave Brubeck which is played at the beginning in the soda
shop gives the town of pleasantville a very joyful and pleasant atmosphere. This music perfectly
matches the naivety of the teenagers as they engage in good, clean fun with their peers. As the
idea of The importance of change starts to appear in pleasantville, the music becomes more
complex and darker to portray the new rebellious mood that has seized Pleasantville. An example
of this is when the new code of conduct was issued and one of the rules were In no event shall any
music be tolerated that is not of temperate or pleasant nature .In a scene when the coloureds were
all gathered at the back

Breast Lift Persuasive Essay
The Reason Why More And More Women Are Getting Breast Lift Sydney
A breast lift is a plastic surgery procedure that tightens the tissues making up the breast. In
addition, it does away with excess and unnecessary skin in order to make them look more full and
contoured. The breast lift is also referred to as a mastopexy. It is a process that is recognized by
the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
It is one of life s inevitable and foregone conclusions, as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in
the west, that a woman s breasts lose their youthful perkiness and shape. Yes there are some natural
things a woman can do to keep the rate at which this happens in check, but it is bound to slowly but
surely happen.
These are the reasons

  • 2. The Public Sphere By Jurgen Habermas Essay In 1962, Jurgen Habermas published his theory of the public sphere as a way to ensure a functioning democratic society. His theory operates under the assumption that it is possible for people to engage in discourse while bracketing status differentials and to deliberate as if they were social equals. However, Habermas idea of the public sphere was greatly rooted in the history of bourgeois society specifically. Thus, the assumption that all citizens would have equal access to engage in discourse in the public sphere today is unlikely. In North Americanow, the population size is larger, the diverse interests have grown and the political and social powers have more influence over each other than ever before. Beginning with a discussion of Habermas work, The Public Sphere: An Encyclopedia Article, and Nancy Fraser s, Rethinking the Public Sphere: A Contribution to the Critique of Actually Existing Democracy , I shall use examples from feminist, indigenous and environmental movements in North America to illustrate the problems with Habermas assumption. This essay argues that no single individual can temporarily ignore their gender, history or private interests when deliberating in the bourgeois public sphere making it impossible for individuals to engage in public discussions as if they were social equals. First, it is necessary to define what a bourgeois public sphere is. When I mention public sphere throughout this essay I am referring to Habermas definition. Habermas ... • 6. The Debate Over Home Schooling The Debate Over Home Schooling What is home schooling, and who is choosing to be home schooled? In this serious time of concern about the standards of the public education system, it is found that in the United States, the number of parents deciding to home school their kids is increasing. These parents believe that the education system provided by their local schools is unsatisfactory compared to what they could do at home. Home schooling has become more common in the past thirty years and has even started a trend throughout the states. An estimation of a 235,000 335,000 increase of the number of home schooled children within twenty years was reported by the U.S. Department of Education. Since then, that number grown to an astonishing number of 1.7 million, and should continue to grow at a rate of 15 percent a year. These numbers are considered low because it is not necessary in all states to notify the Department of Education when parents decide to home school their children. Activists such as David Gutterson explain home schooling as the attempt to receive an education at a place other than an institution. Children who are home schooled spend most of a normal school day learning in the environment of their homes. Unlike traditional schools, home schooled children s parents are their teachers, which allows for variances in curriculum programs. Some parents choose to follow a more traditional curriculum while others allow their students (children) to learn about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Management Concerns in Corrections for Special Populations Michelle Bergos Introduction to Corrections 140 September 25, 2016 Jason Skeens Abstract More often than not, if John Q. Public is asked the purpose or goals of our American correctional system the reply is incapacitation, retribution, deterrence, and rehabilitation. However, what we are really asking for our corrections system to do is to secure and supervise the individuals cast out of society through the judicial process regardless of their individual needs and abilities. The purpose of this particular study is focused on the management of special needs inmates and the burdens incurred at various levels. For this study, special needs populations are defined as prisoners who exhibit unique physical, mental, social, and programmatic needs that distinguish them from other prisoners and to whom jail and prison management and staff have to respond in nontraditional and innovative ways (Schmalleger Smykla 2013). The special needs populations included individuals suffering from mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse and dependency, the elderly, sufferers of chronic and communicable diseases, and physical disabilities. The upper one is flat and the lower is convex with multiple outlines and a rough outer surface. Wild oysters will spend most of their lives attached, except for the free swimming larval stage. Oysters and the reefs they form provide many ecological, economic, and social benefits. The health of an oyster bed reflects the overall health of the coastal ecosystem they live in. Not only are they an important part of the estuarine food web, they also provide an excellent habitat for inshore marine life, and form important commercial and recreational fishery. Oysters help control erosion along the shorelines and filter the water they live in. These benefits make them an important species in the estuary. There are many different species of oysters. Some of these include but are not limited to: Pacific Oysters, Kumamoto Oysters, Atlantic Oysters, European Flats, and Olympia Oysters. Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas) are small and sweet. Today s youth will complain about classes being too demanding, but at the same time continue to complain because there are no enjoyable courses. Schools are intended to create a space where students can feel comfortable and confident enough to learn what they need to live successful lives. However, this is not the case, as many students growing up, seem to be less passionate about their actual education, and instead, are centered on the overall effect that comes from receiving a higher education. Since currently job security and financial prosperity have been so heavily linked with a college education or degree, young adults are strongly encouraged to go to university.
