Construction Projects For The Construction Industry
Introduction Construction projects contain a high level of complicated procurement processes. Not
only the revenue or profit is critical in the construction industry, but market intelligence and
construction procurement knowledge are also important. The bidding process in the construction
industry is illustrated by many different involved parties including the architectural and engineering
firms, client, general contractors, material suppliers, specialized contractors, manufacturers, etc.
(Halaris, 2001). Preparing proposed documents, appraising bids, and awarding the contract to the
winner of the bid are among the major duties of the client (Gokhan et al, 2006). (Gokhan et al, 2006)
Fig. 1. Bid proposal preparation process Sub contracting has comprehensively been used in the
construction industry. It allows general contractors to employ the lowest workforce in construction
projects and promotes specialization (Maturana, 2005). Many general contractors only play a role as
construction management agents in construction projects, for example, they sub contract a large
volume of their work to sub contractors (Shash, 1998). The characteristic bidding process is showed in
Fig. 1. Bidding requirements and procedures vary and have disparate requirements that are created by
the owners. There is a challenge of a bidding procedure is the quantity of paper based forms that need
to be filled, revised, and filed. This spends a large amount of time, which the contractor changes very

Comparing Gruwell, Miss Campbell, And Eva Benitez In...
In both movies there are key individuals, organizations, movements, and programs. In the Freedom
Writers, some key individuals are Erin Gruwell, Miss Campbell, and Eva Benitez. Ms. Gruwell
believed in her students. She knew that they can learn and was determined to teach them; she was an
extremely involved teacher. She played a role in solving the divisions of race tensions between ethnic
groups by teaching her students to tolerate and understand one another. Miss. Campbell was apart of
the administration at the school. She opposed Erin s teaching tactics. She also thinks Mrs. Gruwell s
students can t be trusted and are lost causes. Miss. Campbell is part of the reason that the students are
not getting the education they need. Eva Benitez is one of the main student character in the movie. She
resisted Ms. Gruwell s teaching the most, but by the end of the movie she grew as a student and
person. Eva is a third generation gang member and is a prime example of how gang violence is a
problem in their school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Freedom Writers, the media address that urban schools are very diverse, are dangerous, teachers,
parents, and students lack initiative, and a teacher hero is needed to turn the school around. Donald
Trump discusses what he thinks about urban schools. He describes inner city communities in a rally
on October 27th. So many horrible, horrible problems. The violence. The death. The lack of education.
No jobs (Sullivan, 1). He is portraying that the inner city is a crime filled area with no education and is
very dangerous. Precious Knowledge gives a different perspective to urban education and schools.
Since this is a documentary and not a Hollywood movie, concepts in the movie are not as extreme as
they are in Hollywood movies. In this movie, students are striving to achieve and are passionate about
education. Also, teachers are eager to help students in

How Norman Castles Changed During The Middle Ages
Introduction
Castles first came to England in 1066 when William, Duke of Normandy, won the battle of Hastings.
The Normans needed castles because they had taken control of England by force and were hated by
many English people. The Normans had to protect themselves from English rebellions and they
needed to keep power over and show strength to the English people. William made sure that castles
were built all over England in major towns. The first castles were built very quickly and were very
simple, but during the reign of William and throughout the rest of the Middle Ages (1066 1500) the
design of castles changed. In this essay I will talk about how much castles changed during the Middle
Ages and the reasons for this.

Better living conditions for the Norman barons with bedrooms, kitchens, a chapel and toilets
(Garderobes).
Square Keep castles had lots of strengths: They were a show of power against the English and really
difficult to attack because of their thick stone walls and height. They also gave better living
conditions. They did still have weaknesses though: They were expensive, took a long time to build,
they could not be moved and they could still be attacked by enemies by:
Setting really hot fires under the corners (weak points) until they collapsed.
Using battering rams.
Starving out the Normans by not letting food in.
Tunneling and mining under the castle walls.
Using archers and catapults to fire arrows and rocks over the castle walls.
The corners were blind spots an attacker could hide behind corners.
These problems led to a change of design towards the end of the 12th Century once Edward I became
king. Under his reign the design of round stone castles and keeps began. The round castle keep meant
that there was nowhere the enemy could not be seen and took away the weaknesses of having corners.
Concentric Castles (1239 1400)
Concentric castles were a castle within a castle idea and were built to be as difficult to attack as
possible. Castles were very important as there were still lots of wars in England with many people
fighting for power.

The Diet Coke And Mentos Experiment
An experiment that was made around the 1980s, but came back with a sensational hit in 2005
(Spangler). It s all across the internet and all across America in science classrooms. An experiment
that will make people run from being hit. A sticky, sweet soda geyser all made from Diet Coke and
Mentos. The Diet Coke and Mentos experiment has been around for awhile and many people have
started to question how this experiment works. A process called nucleation has a big role. Nucleation
is when a gas in the Diet Coke called carbon dioxide clings to the Mentos. The little bubbles that form
in the soda are from the carbon dioxide (Hiskey). The carbon dioxide is already pumped into the
bottles at high pressures in the factories, so the carbon dioxide ... Show more content on

Less dense Mentos drop slower which would be the same as putting in Mentos at a slow pace. An
experiment done with crushed Mentos proved this in 2012 (Buddies). The reason why it does not
produce a high geyser or help with the experiment is how quick the reaction acts. The bubbles don t
form quick enough to rise up, as it would with dropping Mentos in fast. The reason why Mentos with
their surface rubbed off would not work is because the Mentos provide the rough surface to help break

How Government Is The Uk To State How Governments Are Formed

Fall
How governments are formed
There are no codified rules in the UK to state how government is formed, in theory it is in the hands of
the monarch up until the 19thCentury this was largely a reality. However the monarch no longer plays
any active role in this process. The party that wins a majority of seats in the House of Commons after
a general election, its leader will be invited by the monarch to form a government.
2010 Coalition

coalition with LibDems and later the LibDems negotiated with both main parties for a coalition *

She was respected abroad almost as Churchill had been, and the media concentrated all their attention
on her. Ultimately her own cabinet removed her in 1990 after her support for the highly unpopular poll
tax. * She was replaced by John Major who brought back cabinet and collective decision making.
However the cabinet proved to be an obstacle in the way of Major s attempts to improve our
democracy. * Tony Blair 1997 2007 set about restoring personal control. He took prime ministerial
control to new heights. His style of leadership was often described as sofa politics ; a form of practice
of settling issues with individual ministers privately and informally. Blair s style was also described as
presidential; he often spoke on behalf of the nation rather than the head of government. His total
domination of foreign affairs marked Tony Blair as one of the most dominant PMs. * Gordon Brown
2007 2010 could never dominate as Blair had done; he had a lack of media and public support and a
gap in his legitimacy since he had never faced the electorate in the general election as a party leader.
Commonly described as an unelected PM * David Cameron 2010 faces domination within a coalition,
where he must share power within 2 parties.

Case Study Of Keurig Green Mountain
Keurig Green Mountain, previously owned by Keurig, Inc., was introduced in 1998. Beginning as a
vision in the 70 s, the goal of the company was to solve a typical office problem; a full pot of coffee
sitting, growing bitter, dense, and stale. The vision was a single cup coffee brewer. In 1992, a business
plan was formed and partnerships were made. John Sylvan, the man with the plan, called in Peter
Dragone, a former college roommate and director of finance at Chiquita, and Keurig was founded. But
the vision and the plan were not enough. They needed funding. In order to quit making their coffee
pods by hand and make their single coffee brewers more reliable, they sought the help Dick Sweeny to

Comparing The Book And The 1932 Film Murders
After reading and watching both the book and the 1932 film Murders in the Rue Morgue. It is evident
that the film went mostly it s own way, taking only small bits from Poe s actual story, discarding many
important details.
The book starts out with an intricate explanation of the analytical mind. As that is our introduction; it
floats into our narrator recounting his acquaintance with another named: C. Auguste Dupin, whom our
narrator recalls was very fond of books; having met him at an obscure library in the Rue Montmartre,
they were searching for the same unique text. This accidental meeting brought them closer together,
seeing each other frequently. Our narrator is fascinated with his new friend s family history, which he
was told many times. And is enthralled by Dupin s love of literature. It is then detailed how our
narrator gives himself up to Dupin s flights of fancy, letting himself be sucked into a vortex of fey
dreams. Prone to prowling the streets at night, conversing amongst themselves. He then praises his
friend s analytical inclination, his skills of observation proved by a little chat about a play and a
fruiterer. While they are taking one of their many jaunts around Paris, the pair come across a
newspaper describing a ghoulish unsolved case involving the murder of a woman: Lady L Espanaye
and her daughter Camille. It seems the Madame was found with her neck so ravaged, her head just fell
off when moved. Her daughter cruelly contorted and shoved up a

The next revolution in car production took place not in the United States but in Japan. A change in
management thinking occurred there when Ohno Taiichi, a Toyota production engineer, pioneered the
development of lean manufacturing in the 1960s after touring the US plants of the Big Three car
companies. The management philosophy behind lean manufacturing is to continuously find methods
to improve the efficiency of the production process in order to reduce costs, increase quality, and
reduce car assembly time. In lean manufacturing, workers work on a moving production line, but they
are organized into small teams, each of which is responsible for a particular phase of car assembly,
such as installing the car s transmission or electrical wiring system. Each team member is expected to
learn all the tasks of all members of his or her team, and each work group is charged with the
responsibility not only to assemble cars but also to continuously find ways to increase quality and
reduce costs. By 1970, Japanese managers had applied the new lean production system so efficiently
that they were producing higher quality cars at lower prices than their US counterparts, and by 1980
Japanese companies were dominating the global car market. To compete with the Japanese, managers
at the Big Three car makers visited Japan to learn lean production methods. In recent years, Chrysler
Canada has been the North American model for speed in automobile production. Chrysler s Windsor,

very positive, however the family life made growing up somewhat negative. During most of Goodwin

of the time, her mother, Helen, was too sick to have company over, which was very stereotypical

so exhausted just from having everyone here that I ve got to lie down for a little while (Goodwin 122).
Goodwin s sister, Jeanne, took many roles that Helen could not because Helen was so sick. Goodwin
stated that, For as long as I can remember, she was a surrogate mother, looking out for me, taking care
of me when my mother was sick (Goodwin 37). Goodwin would recall many stories of Jeanne doing
tasks that their mother would do. This made her Goodwin feel embarrassed, which is where the

Probable Cause Vs Reasonable Persuasion
Differentiate between probable cause and reasonable suspicion. Explain how these concepts apply in
criminal cases.
There is a huge reason why the terms reasonable suspicion and probable cause are often confused with
each other. Both have two different levels of suspicion, causing the two to be frequently interchanged
by mistake. The legal standard of proof in United States law that is less than probable cause is
reasonable suspicion. Reasonable suspicion is evaluated using the reasonable person or reasonable
officer standard, in which another officer in the same circumstances could reasonably suspect a person
has been, is, or is about to be engaged in criminal activity. This would mean that a crime occurred and
the said suspect is more likely than not the perpetrator. The suspect has the mental capacity, the

A Literature Review of the Popular Opinion on Abortion
Literature Review Popular Opinion on Abortion
Abortion has long been a source of acrimonious and controversial debate. It touches upon key ethical,
moral, philosophical, biological, and legal issues. Opinions about abortion tend to be rooted in
fundamental personal values which are unlikely to change. Many people, especially Christians, regard
abortion as murder. Such people oppose abortion in varying degrees, calling their position Pro Life.
Others regard abortion as an excruciating yet critical decision that woman should be allowed to make.
The debate over abortion has been a persistent source of political and cultural division in this country.
Most Americans have an opinion on abortion and believe the issue is important to them. Also,
opinions on abortion, in a very general sense, are believed to have stayed relatively stable since the
Roe v. Wade decision.
Political Party Affiliation
Jelen and Wilcox (2003) find that abortion attitudes are increasingly strong predictors of vote choice at
a variety of levels of government. (494). Research has been virtually unanimous in tracing this trend
to the influence of political elites on mass public opinion.
Wilcox and Norrander trace this trend to the Supreme Court s decision in Webster, which granted state
governments increased discretion in their ability to regulate the delivery of abortion services (Wilcox
and Norrander, 2002, 383). The public became increasingly supportive of legalized abortion with

General Mills Case
Introduction
In the late 1990 s and early 2000 s the food industry was struggling with weak sales and low inflation
which caused waves of consolidation among some of the largest firms in the industry. In 1998 General
Mills studied areas of potential growth and value creation for their company which lead to small
acquisitions of other firms. Looking to further grow their company, in December 2000, management
of General Mills made a recommendation to its shareholders that they authorize the creation of more

This results from the fact that it is a mature segment with many well established companies vying for
market share. The industry is highly consolidated and very fragmented. To grow their businesses,
companies rely heavily on mergers and acquisitions to capture additional market share. Historically,
the grocery industry has been characterized by slow growth which results in strong price competition
and the development of aggressive marketing campaigns between existing firms. Perceived product
quality and strong brand recognition by consumers are the basis of competition among firms in the
industry. The source of General Mills competitive advantage lies in its ability to develop innovative
products and highly reputable brands. As a result, they hold cost leadership positions across a number
of grocery categories. Exhibit 1 shows the top US companies according to their sale of packaged foods
globally. Market leaders include Kraft Foods, PepsiCo, Nestle, Mars, Kellogg, and General Mills,

Gender Conformity And Expectations Through Time
Orlando by Virginia Woolf addresses the issues of gender conformity and expectations through time;
in this case, three centuries during the Elizabethan Era in the area around Europe. The main character,
Orlando, experiences a gender change during his lifetime to become a female and that drastically
modifies the way that she lives. Through the motif of Orlando s gender change and androgyny,
Orlando experiences both life and love, which is not common for men and women regardless of the
time period. Orlando began life as a young boy, living in a house in the country before being taken
into the city by the Queen. As a child, he encourages himself to chase masculine pursuits in life, as his
father and other ancestors do before him. Despite the encouragement of masculine activities as his
family is known for, during his isolation, he decides instead as an adult that they and their deeds [are]
dust and ashes (Woolf, 81) and that he would like to live life the way that he wants to, as a poet
searching for love. Even as a man, Orlando has the power and authority to live his life how he wishes,
but he always craves love. A poet at heart, Orlando has many loves, such as the girls in his sonnets,
and he always writes about them in the way he finds best. He claims Love [has] meant nothing to him
but sawdust and cinders (40) and he cannot find the love he is always searching for. Without love in

Craft Beer Industry
Abstract
As economies slowly improve, large organizations rely on third party logistics (3PL) companies to
play the crucial role of creating innovative solutions in supply chain technology and process
improvement. The supply chain market is optimistic for innovative 3PL companies in bad times and
good regardless of the industry it handles. The ultimate goal of 3PL companies is to enhance visibility
and increase responsiveness along the supply chain. This optimism has enabled new players emerge
into the supply chain distribution market that was dominated by a few key logistics players. This paper
reviews the current state of logistics visibility in the craft beer industry and determines the feasibility
of opening a strategically located third party climate controlled distribution center(s) within the United
States designed to service the expansive growth of the Craft Beer industry. It also addresses any
assumptions for the application of technology and develops an innovation plan to drive supply chain
excellence. This innovative plan is based on the application of Denning s book, the Innovator s Way.

represent Jesus and vice versa. In Genesis 2: 18 23 God specifically made a woman out of a man,
apparently implying male supremacy. Yet Genesis 1:27 reads
God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female.
Backed up with further passages(Galatians 3:28 and Acts 10:34) we can see the first theological belief
in equality. However this also shows that the Bible can be a questionable source for issues such as
ordination considering these Genesis passages are reasonably inconsistent. This statement of equality
can be questioned as God incarnated himself as a male, Jesus, and resulted in an important argument
to signify why only men should fulfil the requirements for Priesthood. However, it seems conservative
Catholicism may have misinterpreted the distinction God purposely made between men and women.
Catholic and Orthodox churches argue God incarnated himself as a male because when acting in the
person of Christ, must carry a natural resemblance to him. Yet God should neither be pictured in

SWOT Analysis
Strengths
Estée Lauder has an extremely large presence as the global leader in prestige beauty with products
being sold in more than 150 countries. This global success is attributed to their focus on cultural
relevance, making sure that their products, signage, marketing etc. appeals to consumers in each local
market. Estée Lauder also benefits from brand recognition and loyalty; however, this seventy two year
old company isn t only known for high end, classic products anymore. They have a very successful
track record of incorporating complimentary firms through merger and acquisitions. Consumers from

The company spent $179 million on R D in 2017 alone (Research Development, n.d.). With this
budget, they are able to identify shifts in customers preferences, improve upon existing products and
to deliver the new superior products they are known for.
Weaknesses Estée Lauder s distribution network consists of salons, specialty stores and high end
department stores. This is potentially limiting its reach to customers. A limited distribution strategy
tends to increase dependency on specific channels which could be disastrous. For instance, Macy s is
Estée Lauder s biggest client, accounting for nine percent of total sales and nearly forty percent of
sales in the United States (Terlep, 2016). Macy s is also aggressively closing stores. Unfortunately, the
company has not fully made use of the internet, increasing its online presence and focusing more on e
commerce would be advantageous. They were also very late to the specialty channel stores, such as
Sephora, costing them prime placement (Fernandez, 2017). Estée Lauder should work to expand its
reach if they want to stay relevant.

Padalecki And Ackles-Personal Narrative
The good (and occasionally bad) times continue to roll for Sam and Dean Winchester, as Supernatural
has officially been renewed for a jawdropping 12th season. But once the CW show finally skids to a
halt, will the Winchesters go into the night quietly? Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have just
weighed in on how their characters will go out, and it will undoubtedly be in a blaze of glory!
Padalecki and Ackles recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly, where they discussed how Sam and
Dean will finally say goodbye to their viewers. If you d asked me [during] Season 1, I would ve
thought that it would ve been the apocalypse, Ackles, who plays the pie loving Dean, said before

Nevertheless, Padalecki shared that he is hoping that Sam and Dean will end up paying homage to one
of his favorite films. It s changed a lot over time, he said. Part of me, loving Butch Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid, always thought it d be great to see the boys against insurmountable odds and to freeze
frame on them and just hear stuff in the background. But what happens to the Winchesters in this
ending? They will certainly be getting the kind of death any hunter would be proud of. You don t
know if they die, you don t know if they live, but you know that they re going to go out in a blaze of
glory, Padalecki stated. In the end, the man who plays the younger Winchester brother revealed that
Sam and Dean should never give up without a good fight. The boys can t stop fighting, Padalecki said
of the Winchesters. As long as they re alive, they re not going to stop fighting. We re going to have to
see them continue to do good together. I think that s what s the most important part. The 11th season
of Supernatural airs on The CW every Wednesday

The Developement of Civilization Essay
The Developement of Civilization
According to Webster s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, civilization is a relatively high level of
cultural and technological development, specifically the stage of cultural development at which
writing and the keeping of written records is attained . Other sources trace the meaning of civilization
to political, economic, military and social structures as well as the heightened intellectual and artistic
aspects of life (Spielvogel, xxxi). Civilization developed as the crises of everyday life necessitated
change. As history progresses, we study our past in search of guidance and other crucial information

It is taken from the fossils of these people that language may well have began in this form of human
(Lerner,8). They had enlarged cavities in the front of the neck. Soon different dialects would run
rampant. These people, the Neanderthals, were also nomadic. They followed the herds along their
migratory patterns and gathered other sustenance consisting mostly of plants and their roots along the
way. It is believed that approximately 400,000 years ago, Homo erectus learned to use fire (Lerner,9).
They also began to travel farther distances, for the earliest evidence of the wheel used in travel was
found to be in 35,000 BCE (Calder,54). There is conflicting information as to when the Homo erectus
began evolving into the Homo sapien. Some say it was in 28,000 BCE (Lerner,9), others say it was
between 18,000 and 13,000 BCE (Spielvogel,3). Facts would point to the earlier years, where the
Sumerian city states, Egyptian Civilization (especially the Old Kingdom), and cuneiform began to
emerge. Groups of people advanced beyond their old hunting grounds at a rate of only two or three
miles per generation (Spielvogel,3). They began making waterproof shelters of their own. With this
new advance in addition to the discovery and use of fire, man was able to move to climates other than

Essay Comparing The Korean War And Mccarthyism
Despite their historical hostility towards each other, the United States and the Soviet Union were allies
during World War II. However, it was in the decades following the end of the war war that tension
between these two former allies grew to the point where their rivalry became significantly evident.
Many factors influenced relations between the Americans and Soviets. Nonetheless, it was the Korean
War and McCarthyism that truly influenced negativity in their already broken relationship and made
their rivalry the long and dangerous affair it was.
At the end of the Second World War, both the Americans and the Soviets had troops in Korea fighting
the Japanese. Due to the fact neither country was willing to allow their army to leave, they decided ...

Not only were these two nations supporting opposing sides during the Korean War, but the war
intensified America s anxiety about communism. There were Americans dying in Korea fighting
against a communist movement. All the while, back at home, more Americans were losing their jobs

who weren t getting accused of being communists, campaigned with furor against commies or

had it not been for the Soviet support of communist North Korea in the Korean War, Josef Stalin
would not have become the face of communism and anxiety about domestic subversion in the United

Ancient Greek Government Essay
Introduction This paper attempts to classify the various types of forms of government in ancient Greek
city states. These forms of government are monarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, oligarchy, and democracy.
Monarchy In monarchies, the people are led by kings or Queens. In monarchies, the power is legally
his or hers to take and any succession is not based on election or the drawing of lots, it is hereditary.
Hereditary succession is usually directly to the first born son, however in modern times this has been
changed to include first born daughters (BBC.co.uk, 2011). Usually any king or queen is a monarch
for the entirety of their remaining life. There are numerous examples, however, where this has not
taken place, for example when Charles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Male citizens with a certain amount of wealth have the right to take public office or serve in command
in the armed forces. Cleisthenes also laid the foundation of the regime for even the poor to vote on
matters of public concern. This voting was done by representatives of the people, and by the show of
hands. Lots were drawn for minor public offices, or to serve in court as jurors. There were also annual
elections for 10 generals and 500 citizens for the boule. Oligarchy This is the origins of Athenian rule.
The few who are rich can essentially ensure that their will is done, in order to further their own
interests at the expense of the people. This a rule that Sparta chose for their structure, in the sense that
their own interests remained focused on military might and consolidation of power, however Spartan
men must earn their place amongst the Ephors and Garoussia by serving in the Spartan army. Tyranny
Tyrants are those who by coup or by the use of paid mercenaries take power with no legal right to do
so. These people are similar to oligarchies in that they serve their own interests but are usually crueller
than oligarchs. Tyrannys were not hereditary and therefore a succession was rarely effected, ensuring
that an area or country

A Push for Safer Crosswalks for RACC Students and Faculty...
In this modern day and age many drivers and pedestrians alike become easily distracted by: cell
phones, I Pods, navigation systems, as well as many other distractions. These distractions can make it
quite dangerous to even cross the street. It is quite shocking how worn and faded some of the
crosswalks at RACC have become. Even without the distractions the crosswalks are rather difficult to
see and be able to stop if a pedestrian steps into it. The crosswalks at RACC connect the main campus
with the parking lots, as well as other buildings, and classes just off campus. Having a student
population of almost 5,000 undergraduate students in addition to its full faculty and staff, a large
majority of these people have no choice but to park ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore while they are distracted and driving their focus must alternate between whatever other task
is at hand and driving. This draws their attention away from the road, which can potentially lead to an
accident. A crosswalk is generally designed to provide a safe path for pedestrians to cross by marking
the designated path that people can cross and in which motorist should be able to see. Should is the
keyword, because as the paint fades, chips, and wears from traffic; the path becomes harder for
motorist to see. The consequence of this is a driver will be less aware that someone may step into the
road trying to cross at these points. Laws and legislation are beginning to crack down on these drivers
but the roads are still a dangerous place for a person to be.
There are a multitude of options to increase the safety at cross walks. A pilot program in Virginia,
which is based off of similarly designed programs oversea, uses zigzagged lines painted on the road at
dangerous crossings ( Woodward, 2009). The idea is that the lines will draw a motorist s attention to
the road, the upcoming crosswalk, and they become aware of the potential for pedestrians to be
crossing. Placing a crossing guard at each crosswalk could serve the dual

Relationship Between A Mother Daughter Relationships And...
In Affection and Acrimony : Exploring Mother Daughter Relationships in Gilmore Girls
Almost every woman in North America has some form of a relationship with their daughter and/or
mother in their lifetime. However, these relation can vary in amiability and affection. Whether due to
similarities or differences in personality or circumstances in life, mothers and daughters can be close
confidants or fierce foes. These familial relationships have been studied in part by Marianne Hirsch
and Sharon M. Varallo in their essays on the familial gaze and the genre of family photographs,
respectively. In this essay, I will be using the work previously done by Hirsch and Varallo to analyze
two different mother daughter relationships presented in the television show Gilmore Girls. The two
relationships differ vastly in their outward appearance, however both relationships show underlying
characteristics of both friendship and animosity. Overall, these two mother daughter relationships
demonstrate that the love between a mother and a daughter can be expressed in various ways.
Gilmore Girls follows the lives of three women in the Gilmore family. Rory, the youngest, is a
teenager at the beginning of the show. She is an only child and was raised by her single mother,
Lorelai, in the small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. Lorelai is in her thirties throughout the show.

Dynamic Characters In High Fidelity
Dynamic characters evolve because of a life changing event. This transformation into a dynamic
character did not occur until this year. Before senior year being naive and ignorant was my forte.
Similar to Rob in the film High Fidelity who did not grow up until he realized that he is no longer the

There seems to be a connection between growing up and jumping into an abyss. Maturity comes with

Essay on Pleasures of Eating

The Pleasures of Eating Summary and Response
In The Pleasures of Eating Wendell Berry wants the reader to recognize that eating is a cultural act. He
believes we are eaters not consumers and that we should have more knowledge about the food we eat.
Berry wants the reader to questions where the food is coming from, what condition is it produced in
and what chemicals may it contains. He has found that the food industries blind us to what we are
consuming and the effect it has on us. At last Berry believes that we must eat responsibly to live free.
Berry first begins with eating as an agricultural act. We think of food as an agricultural product rather
than think of ourselves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like any politics it involves our freedom. By giving someone else the control we, neglect to
understand that we cannot be free unless our food is free (Berry 232).
Our food wars a much make up as actors (Berry 232). Berry expresses that the food industry wants
little to do with our health but more to do with volume and price of their product. As scales increase,
diversity declines when this happens so does health. From there the dependence on drugs and
chemicals becomes necessary. Food advertising leads up to believe that what we eat is good, tasty,
healthy and guaranteed to give us a long life (Berry 233).
Industrialism is a trap. Berry believes how to escape this trap is to recognize the food problem as a
whole and how eating is inescapable. In order to participate in the agricultural act you must;
participate in food productions, prepare your own food, learn your foods origin, cut the middle man
when you buy, learn about industrial food companies, good farming and gardening and learn from
observation and experience. Berry takes pleasure in eating meat from non suffering non farm raised
animals. As well as, fruits and vegetables that lived a plentiful life. He believes eating should be an
extensive pleasure and the more we participate in agriculture and gain knowledge the more we live,
free from mystery, from creatures we

Powerful Women In Shakespeare s Hamlet
Women are feeble
As an individual from the 21st century, how might you react if the ladies were depicted feeble like

Hamlet, Ophelia and Gertrude were viewed as powerless, dependent and they did not have their own

Implanting RFID in Employees
Human capital is a corporation s most valuable asset, and effective management of its resources is a
primary concern of any business. Employers spend a considerable amount of time trying to decrease
wasted time by their chief resource while effectively increasing productivity. Recently, management
challenged us to suggest ways to use modern technology to covertly evaluate and quantifiably
measure worker productivity. Because of the recent revelations of governmental overreach in spying
on Americans disclosed by NSA contractor, Edward Snowden, the dichotomy between spying and
privacy is front and center in the public s consciousness. Surveillance programs do not solely exist in
national security; surveillance techniques have been coopted by business to monitor and track
employees. As George Orwell observed in 1984, the consequences of every act are included in the act
itself (1949, p. 36).
In 2007, a survey by the American Management Association and ePolicy Institute that 77% of
employers engage in some form of electronic monitoring of employees (American Management
Association, 2008). The reason for monitoring primarily consist of tracking employee productivity,
legal compliance, and to help assist in performance reviews. Understanding how the fourth
amendment guarantees individual privacy underscores the need for caution in advocating Radio
Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in tracking onsite and offsite employees.

The reason why we got these results can be explained, when alcohol interacts with the cell membrane
is affects the normal formation of the lipid chains that form in a bilayer, it is believed that alcohol
binds underneath the charged head of the lipid and displaces water that is originally there [1] this
breaks up the membrane allowing more of the red pigment to diffuse out of the beetroot. [2] The
ethanol forms temporary bonds with the phospholipid heads in the bilayer as they are opposite dipoles
causing the phospholipids to move out of place causing gaps to form which allows large molecules
such as betalain to diffuse out of the cell. As well proteins, like enzymes, can become denatured by the
ethanol due to the same affect as with the phospholipids this can disrupt the hydrogen bonds, which
maintain secondary structure. The negative ethanol molecules cause the bonds between the amino acid

Cholesterol in the membrane is not soluble in water but in ethanol it is soluble, at high concentrations
it actually begins to dissolve, as the cholesterol is no longer present and is used to hold the
phospholipids together, the bilayer comes more fluid, cholesterol helps provide stability so once
removed there becomes larger gaps in between the phospholipids causing larger molecules to be able
to diffuse out, such as betalain, therefore the cell membrane is increasingly more permeable [3]. This
is what caused the results that we got, as the concentration increased so did the gaps in the membrane
in size increase, allowing more pigment to diffuse out, especially at higher concentrations when
cholesterol too dissolved, then as the concentration got higher at 60% the results leveled off as the

Symbolism In Battle Royal, By Ralph Ellison

Royal to deliver a speech that was given the previous day for his graduation. At Battle Royal, he

In Foster s book, How To Read Literature Like a Professor, he has a chapter called He s Blind For a

character is blind to what is going on around him. He also says, if you want your audience to know
something important about your character (or the work at large), introduce it early (213). In Battle

The Price Elasticity Of Demand
Price elasticity of demand is defined as a measure of the responsiveness or sensitivity of consumers to
changes in the price of a good or service (Thomas Maurice, 2012, pp. 199). Mathematically, the price
elasticity of demand is calculated by dividing the percentage change in quantity demanded by the
percentage change in price. Demand is said to be elastic whenever the absolute value of the percentage
change in quantity demanded exceeds the percentage change in price, which means the absolute value
of the elasticity would be greater than one. If the absolute value of the price elasticity of demand is
less than one, the demand is said to be inelastic, or less sensitive to the price change. There are various
factors that affect the price elasticity of products, in the following sections these factors will be
applied to the demand of desktop computers.
The first factor which is the most important determinant of price elasticity of demand is the
availability of substitutes (Thomas Maurice, 2012, pp. 205). For any product where quality substitutes
are readily available, the price elasticity of demand will be high. For example, if the price of desktop
computers was to rise by 20%, the quantity of desktop computers demanded would most likely
decrease by a greater percentage. This is because consumers could easily go out and purchase laptop
computer or tablets to accomplish tasks for which they needed the desktop computer. Likewise, if the
price of desktop computer

Victor Hugo Foils
Victor Hugo s works discuss many themes; forgiveness and compassion, justice, and the need for
political change, among many others, and much of the time, adhering to these themes take precedence
over obeying the law. Hugo was elected to the Parliament in 1848 as a conservative, yet when he
started making progressive speeches, was forced to break with the conservatives. It was when
Napoleon III came into power that Hugo stood up for his views, declaring Napoleon III a traitor to
France, and was exiled from France for nineteen years for this. Hugo s sense of morality defied law;
he refused to obey and paid the price for it. Hugo continued to publish novels and anti Napoleon III
material while he was in exile in Guernsey. Some of Hugo s most powerful ... Show more content on

His devotion to the law goes past mere morals, rivalling the revolutionary leader Enjolras devotion to
the Revolution like Enjolras, he does not take a wife or have children. By giving Valjean a child but
not Javert, Hugo enforces the idea that love is higher than law. He spends a decent amount of time
tracking down Valjean to bring him back into custody; in this time, a second offense would result in
death. Javert s turning point comes during and immediately after the insurrection of June 5 6, 1832.
Javert is captured by the student revolutionaries, who wish to spare him until the moment that one of
their friends, Jehan Prouvaire, is shot by the National Guard. Enjolras turns to Javert and says, Your
friends have just shot you, sealing his fate. Javert fully expects to be killed at the barricades, and even
more so when Valjean himself arrives to save Marius Pontmercy, the young man who is courting his
daughter. As payment for saving the barricade, Enjolras allows Valjean to shoot Javert himself.
Valjean not only lets Javert go, but tells Javert his address and says, I do not think I shall escape from
this place. But if by chance, I do, I live under the name of Fauchelevent, in the Rue de l Homme arm,
No. 7. Valjean knows to be an honest man he must not kill, and he must be truthful, and he does
exactly this. When Javert finds him as Valjean emerges from the sewers with Marius after the fall of
the barricades, Valjean still acts courteous to Javert, requesting to help save Marius life before turning
himself in. Javert accompanies Valjean to Marius house, and then to Valjean s home, before
disappearing. After these events, Hugo describes Javert as his whole demeanor changing; his whole
person, slow and sombre, was stamped with anxiety. The guilt of being shown compassion by a man
who should have every reason to oppose Javert is too

Rome Edict Of Nantes ( 1598 )
PART ONE
Compare/Contrast: 3 paragraphs (Choose ONE): 20%
1. Compare and contrast the Edict of Milan (313) with the Edict of Nantes (1598). In what ways are
they similar and in what ways are they different? Explain the similarities and/or differences between
the two edicts, paying close attention to the texts as well as the specific historical circumstances in
which they were composed.
The Edict of Milan in 313 was declared by Emperor Constantine and Licinius. This declaration called
for toleration of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire and freedom of worship to all Rome s
citizens. It was issued shortly after the end of Christian persecution under the reign of Emperor
Diocletian. Previous to the declaration of this edict, Emperor Constantine decided to march on Italy.
Before advancing, Constantine saw a vision of a symbol of Christianity. He heard a voice that said In
this sign, you will conquer ; and truly he did. As a way of saying thank you to Christians all around the
empire, Constantine passed the Edict of Milan. It gave Christianity a legal status, however, it did not
make it the official religion of the land. St. Bartholomew Day Massacre in 1572 occurred due to the
limited toleration she had towards Protestants. Catholics killed thousands of Protestants on this day.
This caused an uproar throughout the land and turned a political struggle into a religious war. When
Catherine de Medici died, Henry IV was crowned king. The Edict of Nantes in 1598 was

Analysis Of The Poem Tao Te Ching By Stephen Mitchell
In the poem, Tao Te Ching , translated by Stephen Mitchell, there were many stanzas that stood out
and made recognizable points. Stanza number 79 in specific is a very influential one in the sense that
it illustrates a path of non interference . The path of non interference is also known for wu wei. It is a
saying that states Do nothing, and nothing will be left undone . This could be interpreted as to not
worry of finishing work when there was never work started in the first place. In stanza 79 it promotes
an opportunity to obtain a opportunity to succeed again even when you fail. For example, everyone in
life will fail even at times when we try so hard, but that does not mean to give up. In todays days
everyone deserves a second chance

Benefits Of Artificial Intelligence
Beneficial AI Many wonder if Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be beneficial to humanity. AI has been
around for only a few years. Voice Assistants such as Bixby and Siri help people maneuver through
screen selection, apps and much more on their cell phones easier and faster. AI is slowly getting better,
with things such as self driving cars and robotic relations. There are two types of AI, weak AI and
strong AI. Weak AI are things we have today such as those listed above (Siri and Bixby), and the
strong AI are what researchers are currently working towards. There are many ways that AI could be
useful in our lives, it can help us to move forward in technology that we have yet to make many
advances in, it can also make everyday complications and annoyances much easier for humans. With
the help of AI, technology will be better and faster than ever because AI will not make repeated
mistakes like people would. First, AI are created to learn as they go. AI are able to make fast advances
by being given set goals. In the article, Benefits and Risks of AI, the author wrote, Machines can
obviously have goals in the narrow sense of exhibiting goal oriented behavior: the behavior of a heat
seeking missile is most economically explained as a goal to hit a target (Tegmark). Researchers are
able to set a goal for the AI to reach so it will not get off task, which will make the research process
faster without common distractions. This allows the AI to work through problems

The Role of Women in World War II Essay
How important was the role of women during world war 1
The early rush of volunteers and later the conscription of men led to a shortage of manpower on the
home front. Women, already working in munitions factories were encouraged to take on jobs normally
done by men.
This was the start of major social change. Before the war, women had been content to stay at home to
bring up the family and do domestic work. It was considered unbecoming for a woman to work.
During the war it was considered unpatriotic not to.
Many changes came about as shown by the quote from A. J. P Taylor English History Women became
more independent. Women paid for their round at the pub. Fashion changed ... Show more content on

This turned their faces a bright repulsive yellow. The poor girls were nicknamed canaries . They were
quite proud of this designation as they had earned it in the path of duty. From the war memoirs of
Lloyd George.
The crisis caused by the second U boat campaign lead to the creation of the woman s land army in
1917. Many of those who served were city girls from middle classed families, quite unaccustomed to
hard physical labor. Few failed to impress the initially doubtful farmer with their grit determination
and in the end they saved their country from starvation. Other women joined the forestry corps and
felled trees in shipbuilding and other industries.
At the start of the war almost the entire staff of the Glasgow Corporation tramways left to form a
special battalion of the Highland Light Infantry. Glasgow got its first females clippies in April 1915,
followed more slowly by Manchester and London. Women also became train drivers and greasers of
the railways.
When the war was over most of the women left, or were forced to leave, the paid employment which
they had taken. Despite this the war had brought a significant change to their life s. They began to do
things the normally had never done before such as wear trousers and smoke in public. After the second
world war their daughter proved to be much tougher to remove from their jobs.

  • 2. Construction Projects For The Construction Industry Introduction Construction projects contain a high level of complicated procurement processes. Not only the revenue or profit is critical in the construction industry, but market intelligence and construction procurement knowledge are also important. The bidding process in the construction industry is illustrated by many different involved parties including the architectural and engineering firms, client, general contractors, material suppliers, specialized contractors, manufacturers, etc. (Halaris, 2001). Preparing proposed documents, appraising bids, and awarding the contract to the winner of the bid are among the major duties of the client (Gokhan et al, 2006). (Gokhan et al, 2006) Fig. 1. Bid proposal preparation process Sub contracting has comprehensively been used in the construction industry. It allows general contractors to employ the lowest workforce in construction projects and promotes specialization (Maturana, 2005). Many general contractors only play a role as construction management agents in construction projects, for example, they sub contract a large volume of their work to sub contractors (Shash, 1998). The characteristic bidding process is showed in Fig. 1. Bidding requirements and procedures vary and have disparate requirements that are created by the owners. There is a challenge of a bidding procedure is the quantity of paper based forms that need to be filled, revised, and filed. This spends a large amount of time, which the contractor changes very ... She played a role in solving the divisions of race tensions between ethnic groups by teaching her students to tolerate and understand one another. Miss. Campbell was apart of the administration at the school. She opposed Erin s teaching tactics. She also thinks Mrs. Gruwell s students can t be trusted and are lost causes. Miss. • 5. How Norman Castles Changed During The Middle Ages Introduction Castles first came to England in 1066 when William, Duke of Normandy, won the battle of Hastings. The Normans needed castles because they had taken control of England by force and were hated by many English people. The Normans had to protect themselves from English rebellions and they needed to keep power over and show strength to the English people. William made sure that castles were built all over England in major towns. The first castles were built very quickly and were very simple, but during the reign of William and throughout the rest of the Middle Ages (1066 1500) the design of castles changed. Better living conditions for the Norman barons with bedrooms, kitchens, a chapel and toilets (Garderobes). Square Keep castles had lots of strengths: They were a show of power against the English and really difficult to attack because of their thick stone walls and height. They also gave better living conditions. They did still have weaknesses though: They were expensive, took a long time to build, they could not be moved and they could still be attacked by enemies by: Setting really hot fires under the corners (weak points) until they collapsed. Using battering rams. Starving out the Normans by not letting food in. Tunneling and mining under the castle walls. Using archers and catapults to fire arrows and rocks over the castle walls. The corners were blind spots an attacker could hide behind corners. These problems led to a change of design towards the end of the 12th Century once Edward I became king. Under his reign the design of round stone castles and keeps began. The round castle keep meant that there was nowhere the enemy could not be seen and took away the weaknesses of having corners. Concentric Castles (1239 1400) Concentric castles were a castle within a castle idea and were built to be as difficult to attack as possible. It is evident that the film went mostly it s own way, taking only small bits from Poe s actual story, discarding many important details. The book starts out with an intricate explanation of the analytical mind. As that is our introduction; it floats into our narrator recounting his acquaintance with another named: C. Auguste Dupin, whom our narrator recalls was very fond of books; having met him at an obscure library in the Rue Montmartre, they were searching for the same unique text. This accidental meeting brought them closer together, seeing each other frequently. Our narrator is fascinated with his new friend s family history, which he was told many times. And is enthralled by Dupin s love of literature. It is then detailed how our narrator gives himself up to Dupin s flights of fancy, letting himself be sucked into a vortex of fey dreams. Prone to prowling the streets at night, conversing amongst themselves. He then praises his friend s analytical inclination, his skills of observation proved by a little chat about a play and a fruiterer. The next revolution in car production took place not in the United States but in Japan. A change in management thinking occurred there when Ohno Taiichi, a Toyota production engineer, pioneered the development of lean manufacturing in the 1960s after touring the US plants of the Big Three car companies. The management philosophy behind lean manufacturing is to continuously find methods to improve the efficiency of the production process in order to reduce costs, increase quality, and reduce car assembly time. In lean manufacturing, workers work on a moving production line, but they are organized into small teams, each of which is responsible for a particular phase of car assembly, such as installing the car s transmission or electrical wiring system. Each team member is expected to learn all the tasks of all members of his or her team, and each work group is charged with the responsibility not only to assemble cars but also to continuously find ways to increase quality and reduce costs. By 1970, Japanese managers had applied the new lean production system so efficiently that they were producing higher quality cars at lower prices than their US counterparts, and by 1980 Japanese companies were dominating the global car market. To compete with the Japanese, managers at the Big Three car makers visited Japan to learn lean production methods. The legal standard of proof in United States law that is less than probable cause is reasonable suspicion. Reasonable suspicion is evaluated using the reasonable person or reasonable officer standard, in which another officer in the same circumstances could reasonably suspect a person has been, is, or is about to be engaged in criminal activity. It touches upon key ethical, moral, philosophical, biological, and legal issues. Opinions about abortion tend to be rooted in fundamental personal values which are unlikely to change. Many people, especially Christians, regard abortion as murder. Political Party Affiliation Jelen and Wilcox (2003) find that abortion attitudes are increasingly strong predictors of vote choice at a variety of levels of government. (494). Jesus was the Son of God, the incarnation and human form of God. Therefore God s teachings represent Jesus and vice versa. In Genesis 2: 18 23 God specifically made a woman out of a man, apparently implying male supremacy. Yet Genesis 1:27 reads God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female. Backed up with further passages(Galatians 3:28 and Acts 10:34) we can see the first theological belief in equality. However this also shows that the Bible can be a questionable source for issues such as ordination considering these Genesis passages are reasonably inconsistent. This statement of equality can be questioned as God incarnated himself as a male, Jesus, and resulted in an important argument to signify why only men should fulfil the requirements for Priesthood. However, it was in the decades following the end of the war war that tension between these two former allies grew to the point where their rivalry became significantly evident. Many factors influenced relations between the Americans and Soviets. Nonetheless, it was the Korean War and McCarthyism that truly influenced negativity in their already broken relationship and made their rivalry the long and dangerous affair it was. And, those who weren t getting accused of being communists, campaigned with furor against commies or supported McCarthy in his investigations of alleged subversion in many areas of government. • 28. Ancient Greek Government Essay Introduction This paper attempts to classify the various types of forms of government in ancient Greek city states. These forms of government are monarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, oligarchy, and democracy. Monarchy In monarchies, the people are led by kings or Queens. In monarchies, the power is legally his or hers to take and any succession is not based on election or the drawing of lots, it is hereditary. Hereditary succession is usually directly to the first born son, however in modern times this has been changed to include first born daughters (BBC.co.uk, 2011). Usually any king or queen is a monarch for the entirety of their remaining life. There are numerous examples, however, where this has not taken place, for example when Charles ... Lots were drawn for minor public offices, or to serve in court as jurors. There were also annual elections for 10 generals and 500 citizens for the boule. Oligarchy This is the origins of Athenian rule. The few who are rich can essentially ensure that their will is done, in order to further their own interests at the expense of the people. [2] The ethanol forms temporary bonds with the phospholipid heads in the bilayer as they are opposite dipoles causing the phospholipids to move out of place causing gaps to form which allows large molecules such as betalain to diffuse out of the cell. • 42. The Price Elasticity Of Demand Price elasticity of demand is defined as a measure of the responsiveness or sensitivity of consumers to changes in the price of a good or service (Thomas Maurice, 2012, pp. 199). Mathematically, the price elasticity of demand is calculated by dividing the percentage change in quantity demanded by the percentage change in price. Demand is said to be elastic whenever the absolute value of the percentage change in quantity demanded exceeds the percentage change in price, which means the absolute value of the elasticity would be greater than one. If the absolute value of the price elasticity of demand is less than one, the demand is said to be inelastic, or less sensitive to the price change. There are various factors that affect the price elasticity of products, in the following sections these factors will be applied to the demand of desktop computers. The first factor which is the most important determinant of price elasticity of demand is the availability of substitutes (Thomas Maurice, 2012, pp. 205). For any product where quality substitutes are readily available, the price elasticity of demand will be high. For example, if the price of desktop computers was to rise by 20%, the quantity of desktop computers demanded would most likely decrease by a greater percentage. This is because consumers could easily go out and purchase laptop computer or tablets to accomplish tasks for which they needed the desktop computer. Likewise, if the price of desktop computer ... Explain the similarities and/or differences between the two edicts, paying close attention to the texts as well as the specific historical circumstances in which they were composed. The Edict of Milan in 313 was declared by Emperor Constantine and Licinius. This declaration called for toleration of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire and freedom of worship to all Rome s citizens. It was issued shortly after the end of Christian persecution under the reign of Emperor Diocletian. Previous to the declaration of this edict, Emperor Constantine decided to march on Italy.
