During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the sugar islands played a very important role for
the British government. They saw these colonies as an extremely beneficial mercantile society that
could gross them a great deal of wealth. However, for the colonists living on these islands it was an
intense struggle between enormous fortune and a premature death. Richard Dunn, author of Sugar
and Slaves: The Rise of the Planter Class in the English West Indies, 1624 1713, decided to shed
light on these seldom mentioned groups of settlers, who chose the Caribbean islands over mainland
America. The first settlers of the islands being buccaneers, along with their short lifespan, coupled
with the monoculture of the islands and a severe disparity between the rich and poor, created a

why the film The Best Years of Our Lives does a fantastic job of recreating the American society.
The movie was filmed in 1946, thus making it realistic. The Best Years of Our Lives reflects the
post war era because the American society was ready to move forward with their lives, but ex
servicemen were having difficulty transitioning back into their past lives. This film follows three
men named Al Stevenson, Fred Derry and Homer Parrish as they return to Boone City and back to
the arms of their eager family. Like many veterans after the war, many were anxious and could not
reconnect with their family and loved ones immediately due to the high intensity events they

As cliche and predictable the movie was, I really did enjoy it because it accurately portrayed the
era. The actors showed how hopeful everyone was to make a new life and return back to their
old lives. Watching Peggy and Fred struggle over their attraction for each other was quite
entertaining because Fred had nothing to give, but Peggy accepted that unlike Marie. In addition,
Homer s prosthetics made him feel vulnerable, but his fiancee proved to him that love is more
than what can be seen. I really enjoyed the movie because everyone had their own personal
battles, but with everyone s support and advice, everyone moved forward. Homer eventually

to conclude that reverse discrimination does not exist in our society. Often times I find that the
