The Powerful Roman Empire On Ancient Times
Jayan Joshi
History 9
Mrs. Santosuosso

The Powerful Roman Empire
The Roman Empire was one of the most well known empires in history. It was the most powerful of
all of the empires and covered at least a part of over fifty present day countries. It covered the most
area out of all of the empires in history. Other than the Spartans, the Roman Empire had the most
powerful army of the ancient world and contained over 20% of the world population back then. The
Roman s ingenuity created many inventions as well, such as the arch, which, with aqueducts, would
revolutionize the transport of water and other supplies across the empire. The Roman Empire was the
strongest in ancient times, and contained almost all of modern day Europe in its ... Show more content

One main reason that the Roman Empire expanded so much was because of their many good emperors
such as Trajan and his successor Hadrian.
Trajan was emperor of Rome from 98 117 CE and is considered one of the Five Good Emperors of
Rome. One reason Trajan was considered such a good emperor was because he was kind and generous
to the Roman People and Senate. Because of this, Trajan was one of the reasons that Rome could have
so much land and be at the height of their power during his reign. Trajan made sure that the poor were
fed and cared for, and almost everybody in his empire liked him. Aside from his kindness, Trajan was
also recognized for his achievements in war and expanding Rome to its height in 117 AD with 5
million square kilometers. Throughout Trajan s reign, he captured Dacia, or present day Romania, and
the Parthian Empire, or the Persians with his skill in fighting. Following Trajan s death in 117,
Hadrian rose to the throne. Hadrian is considered another one of the five good emperors of Rome,
except Hadrian was different than Trajan in that he unified and consolidated Rome rather than seize
more land as Trajan had. Rather than expand the Empire, Hadrian ruled justly and traveled around his
empire and rectified tax situations. Hadrian is most well known for building a wall across Britain to
keep out barbarians called Hadrian s Wall. Although these emperors helped maintain the Roman

Matisse s Le Bonheur De Vivre
As instrumental as Matisse and Picasso were to the development and evolution of modern art, they
were inspired by Cézanne. In this essay, I will describe how Paul Cézanne s The Large Bathers (1906)
inspired Matisse and Picasso but also how they evolved.
It is evident that while still embracing the abstract style emerging in the turn of the century, Cézanne
still chose to compose his painting in a classical way. (Harris Zucker, n.d.) There is still a believable
perspective in the painting, even if the forms of the women are abstract but familiar. Henri Matisse s
Le Bonheur de Vivre (1906) strays away from the classical style by creating a perspective that is
unreal. The couple in the bottom right corner are significantly larger than the woman next to them, but
also nearly equal in size to the women in the middle of the painting. The composition is very skewed
because of the liberations he took in regards to perspective. There is also a more playful feel to
Matisse s painting than Cézanne s. Not only are the figures carefree, but so are the contrasting colors
and brushstrokes. This is very different from The Large Bathers but also very different ... Show more

It is why this painting is seen as the beginnings of Cubism. There is no perspective; the picture is
completely flat. The women are nonrepresentational and weird. This style will carry forward into the
rest of Picasso s career. (MoMA, n.d.) Whereas Cézanne and Matisse also painted nude women, their
representation isn t vulgar. This is not the case for Picasso s painting. Picasso turned Matisse s
sensuality into violent pornography. (Harris Zucker, n.d. para. 11) Their poses are raunchy and
shocking. It is not as sensual or lively as Matisse s painting nor as intimate or accurate as Cézanne s.
However, despite all these differences, you can see stylistic similarities such as the pastel colors

Doe Season Symbolism
Doe Season is a short story written by David Michael Kaplan. David Michael Kaplan was born in
1946 in New York. He started his writing career in 1985 with his first novel Skating in the Dark, and
wrote Doe Season in 1987. He is identified in the writing community as a magical realist and receives
most of his influence from magical realist elements like interweaving magical elements with detailed,
realistically drawn everyday setting. Kaplan wrote this book as a coming of age story of a girl starting
to become a woman. This is a critical analysis of the short story Doe Season by observing and
identifying different key elements within the story. The main characters in this story are Andy, Andy s
father, and Andy s mother. Andy is a young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The title Doe Season could be translated to the female time. Doe meaning female and season meaning
time. The female time is symbolic because it refers to Andy and how it is almost the end of her
innocence, or childhood, and the beginning of becoming a women. Another piece of important
symbolism in this story are the woods. To Andy, the woods symbolize safety. Andy knows the woods
and is comfortable in the woods. When Andy is running in the woods from the dead doe she start to
hear the sounds of the ocean, this symbolizes her leaving her innocence, and her comfort and going
towards womanhood, the unknown that is the ocean. The ocean reminds her of her mother when her
top came off in the ocean and she saw her mother s breasts. She knows that one day she will also have
breast like her mothers and will become a women, but this is unknown, scary area for Andy. During
the second night after Andy shot the doe, she has a dream. In her dream there is an instance where
Andy pressed deeper, through flesh and muscle and sinew, until her whole hand and more was inside
the wound and she had found the doe s heart . This symbolizes the guilt that Andy has from shooting
the doe. The doe symbolizes Andy s innocence and by killing the doe she feels that innocence is gone
and that is transitioning into adulthood. She come to this scary realization this near the end of the story
and runs

Comparing Gaius Marius And Cato The Elder
One might reflect of the comparisons to be found between Gaius Marius and Cato the Elder. In this
essay, we will be looking at the similarities and differences between two of Rome s great men, who
started from nothing and both becoming Novus homo . Both men came from similar back grounds, but
their opinions differed considerably, but at the heart of each men, therein laid the same goal, to better
Rome and build themselves up to the level of novus homo, in which both men accomplished this in
their careers. The fame of these two men have been carried down throughout history so that we may
know them today. We shall delve into the lives of Gaius Marius (hereinafter called Gaius ) and Cato
the Elder (hereinafter called Cato ). Both Gaius and Cato were plebeian born, neither had any notable
ancestors and both were raised in similar living conditions. Gaius was raised on the farm his family
owned and lived a farming life, working alongside his family toiling with their own hands . ... Show

and philosophers. Cato was extremely apprehensive the effects the Greek philosophers that it would
turn the younger Roman generation in to orators instead of military men . Cato, tried to have all the
Greek philosophers removed from Rome, but change his mind. He was deeply suspicious of all

Analysis Of The Movie The Car Ride Home
The car ride home was an awkward one. Neither Lexi nor Noah said a word to each other for a long
time. Both of them were trying to collect their thoughts, a task that could only be done in silence. All
Noah could think about was that gorgeous girl that had gotten between the fight. Who was she? She
had courage to step into a shifter fight like that. Maybe she didn t know they were shifters but either
way she had a certain badass air to her. She was so amazing. But why was he thinking about her when
Lexi was right there on the side of him? Wasn t Lexi the one he was supposed to be with? Wasn t that

Lexi had no idea and it scared her. She glanced at Noah quickly. He seemed tense, driving with a
serious look on his face. She could tell that he was deep in thought. What was he thinking about? Lexi
wondered before sighing softly. Why couldn t she just make the right decision and stay with Noah?
Was it the right decision though? Would being with Noah really make her happy or would her heart
always yearn for more? They both simmered down in their own thoughts for a while, trying to make
sense of their confusing emotions. It was the longest car ride ever. Eventually, however, Noah pulled
into his parking space and they got out. They walked up to the fourth floor in silence before Noah
finally said, Hey do you want to come in for some tea or something? There s something I really have
to tell you. Noah had a serious look on his face that made Lexi nervous. For some reason, his words
had caused a knot in her stomach to form and now she was scared of what he might say. Was he going
to quit being her friend because of Logan? Lexi would understand if he did. It wasn t his job to protect
her from other guys. With her heart in her mouth, Lexi nodded and followed Noah inside. It was warm
and inviting inside, but the whole situation made her uneasy. What was Noah going to tell her? Go
ahead and get comfy and I ll make some tea, alright? Lexi nodded and made her way to the couch,
waiting for Noah to return. He looked at her and made sure

Negative Effects Of Pharmaceutical Advertising
Think about how often you are watching your favorite show on television and all of a sudden you are
interrupted by a commercial. The commercial begins with the following words, Do you suffer with ...
and this question follows with the following sentence, if so, then talk to your doctor about ... (the
name of the medication that is being advertised) . These prescription drug advertisements are being
shown all over the United States multiple times a day. It is these advertisements that are used for
publicity and marketing that are affecting Americans. The majority of Americans engage in watching
television. The prescription drug advertisements do have a positive impact on Americans but, these
advertisements do more harm than good. Prescription drug advertisements have a negative impact on
Americans by causing them to become hypochondriacs in a certain way. A hypochondriac is someone
who believes and becomes obsessed with the idea that they have a serious condition that was and is
undiagnosed. This problem continues to have a negative affect because it can lead to unnecessarily
prescribing. Patients are going into their doctors and they are requesting to be put on these drugs
because of the great affects that they have heard that they do for them. In the article, Direct to
Consumer Pharmaceutical Advertising, the author states that in a study done over this and the results
were that, when these request were made at about 40 percent of doctor visits and during this time more

Soon after, Neo the hacker, is questioning the truth of this entire world, which is seemed to be normal.
And, he meets Trinity, an other hacker. The leader of the Nebuchadnezzar, Morpheus tells him the

Therefore, this explains why Neo does not need to hide from the bullet when he is fighting.
For set design, the next aspect of meaning in a film is the design of the sets. The color, shape and
angles of a set can be a very important way of communicating, not only meanings, but also emotional
or psychological states of mind to the viewer. In the matrix everything is filled with green, it seems
like the camera is also covered with a green tinted lens. This can then divide a clear vision difference
for the audiences between the actual real world and the matrix. In fact, the actual real world is linked
with the matrix and in some ways they relate with connection. The matrix, for some reason is evil to
the human. Therefore, when things become evil, the color of green is also involving inside as green
itself is representing the matrix. When Smith is trying to kill Neo, there are green flames surrounding
around them. However, green the actual meaning in psychology refers to safety, health, nature and
life. This suggests that if the machines are neither evil nor self indulgent, the one who carry out the
program are Merovingian and Smith. Green therefore, its meaning in here is seen as virtual as it is
different from the original meaning, but the color of it is seen as real.
For costumes that characters wear very often reveal aspects of their personality and be used to guide
our opinions of the people in the film. In the matrix, Trinity wears a black

Hepburn And Streep Research Paper
There have been a wide variety of memorable actors and actresses that have taken Hollywood by
storm. Ranging from opera singers to theater performers, all of these stars may share many similarities
and differences, ranging from personality to number of awards. Of the many famous female stars of
Hollywood, Katharine Hepburn and Meryl Streep are by far some of the most accomplished and well
known. Both Hepburn and Streep acquired an interest for theater, acting, and performance at a young
age. Katharine Hepburn s interest in theater and acting was sparked as child when she and her siblings
created a group, the Hepburn Players, with her neighbors to perform plays. Meryl Streep s desire to

Both women challenged stereotypes for female actresses regarding the characters they portrayed.
Hepburn played a wide variety of characters, ranging from queens to librarians ( Katharine Hepburn ).
Hepburn did not only accept roles for elegant women with class and sophistication. She took on a
variety of roles and became the outstanding performer known today. Hepburn was also an
astoundingly strong woman. At a young age, she lost her brother, with whom she was very close with,
to suicide. Hepburn remained strong through the tragedy, and along with her four siblings, she created
a self directed performing group with other neighborhood kids (Socha 867). Meryl Streep also played
characters who were not necessarily seen as feminine and graceful. Streep s physical appearance,
beautiful while still flexible, allowed her to easily become characters who were not ladylike and
tender, which was perfect for her to play a variety of characters ( Meryl Streep ). Hepburn and Streep
both strayed away from what women ordinarily played, changing the roles actresses in Hollywood
accepted and also changing the way society saw women. After seeing such great stars become females
who were not considered normal, it was much more acceptable for real women to not be what society

Comparison of the Protagonists in Juno and Catcher in the Rye
The main protagonists Juno and Holden of movie Juno and the book Catcher in the Rye, have main
thing in common, they have not yet accepted the fact they play a role in society, communicating with
the people around them, and with their families. Where they differ is in the problems they face. Juno s
main problem is that she becomes pregnant at a young age which is considered to be a life changing
event by societal standards. The main source of Holden s problems comes from result of the death of
his little brother Allie who had Leukemia and his inability to cope with it. Despite many differences
that the main protagonists have, it is true to say that both Juno and Holden go through times of
struggle. Although it is clear that the main characters struggle more than the average teenager,
ultimately both the novel and movie outlines what occurs to teenagers going through a phase in their
lives. Both Holden and Juno suffer through psychological struggles while they try to figure out what
they want in life. In both the movie and the book both characters try to be as original as possible,
however this leads to the characters isolating themselves from society and the people around them.
Holden tries to be the most authentic person he can be while calling all the people that don t share his
ideals phonies . Holden tries to distance himself from people around him as he wears his red hunting

Old Man and the Sea
There is never a simple key to any writer worth much attention, but in the case of Hemingway there is
something that looks so like a key that it cannot escape any informed and thoughtful reader s notice
(O Conner 153). Ernest Hemingway was one such author. Very rarely did he summarize statements,
therefore the only way to solve his puzzle was to take it apart and examine each components. One of
the hidden elements that the reader must analyzie closely is the parallel between Santiago and Jesus
Christ. In the novel, The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway creates connections between
Santiago and Jesus Christ that adds religious coloration to the story.
Santiago can be compared to a Christ figure on the basis of his relationships ... Show more content on

This later passage which details Santiago s painful climb up the hill to his shack, bearing the mast of
his boat on his shoulders is an allusion to Christ s last ascent (Wylder 91). William O Conner believes
The Old Man and the Sea can be classified as a Christian tragedy especially in several marked
allusions to Christian symbolism, particularly of the crucifixion (O Connor 169). Following the
example of Christ, he [Santiago] suffers unjustly and undergoes defeat. He experiences his own type
of crucifixion. But he accepts suffering, again following the model of Christ (Auer 22). Carrying the
mast (cross), Santiago struggles to his shack. At the shack, Santiago goes to bed in a crucifixion pose:
face down, arms out, palms up. He pulled the blanket over his shoulders and then over his back and
legs and he slept face down on the newspapers with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands
up (Hemingway 112). As a result of the precise parallel between Santiago and Christ, the reader can
infer that Santiago is Christ in disguise.
One critic Arvin Wells believes Santiago can be seen as a Christian saint (22). Wells concludes this
theory because Santiago has achieved the most difficult and saintly of all Christian virtues, humility.
There are reminiscences of Christianity present in the story sometimes as a symbol, sometimes as
direct allusion and sometimes merely as a

Beowulf And The Anglo Saxon Epic Poem, Beowulf
In the Anglo Saxon epic poem, Beowulf, a myriad of virtues define the warrior Beowulf. Coming
from his homeland, Geatland, he arrives in the land of the Danes resolute in helping King Hrothgar
defeat an evil monster, Grendel. Beowulf is an impressive, strong warrior who will triumphantly
defeat Grendel; moreover, he will demonstrate how one must seek glory before death, a legacy. A man
s reputation and his lineage is exceedingly important in the patriarchal society Beowulf lives in.
Consequently, through his code of honor, loyalty and pride, he leads in battle and conquers his
enemies, acquires fortunes, gains land and all the treasures imaginable. He will encounter three battles
that will depict his character and his worth. The rich manner with which the poem describes these
events demonstrate Beowulf s prowess. Beowulf is the epitome of what a hero should aspire to be, a
man of honor, loyalty and pride to leave a remarkable legacy. During the fifth and sixth centuries, the
Scandinavian feudal government exercised the honor system of comitatus. Comitatus consisted of
thanes pledging their lives to defend their king, in exchange for the king s rewards. These rewards
consisted of protection, land, treasure and perchance a title. Beowulf follows this code rigorously and
it is what allows him to carry himself with maturity and control when facing any obstacle. Although
many aspire to tangible rewards, Beowulf is greatly concerned about the prestige a victory will do to

Antigone did her wrong doing in honoring her family, This death of mine is no importance; but if I
had left my brother lying in death unburied, I should have suffered. (Act 1. Scene 2. Lines 69 71), she
shows King Creon that her brother s corpse meant more than her life and that if she didn t do her
action, she would be dying in guilt. She shows the King and the people of Thebes that she valued

The Poignant Prophet By Aldous Huxley
The Poignant Prophet One could say that Aldous Huxley was born into greatness, or one could also
say that his greatness was forged from his experiences. Neither would be wrong. Huxley was a third
son born in 1894, into a family that was distinguished on both sides. He was able to attend paid public
school and later attended Eton. Huxley suffered three great traumas that affected his life deeply. The
first would be the death of his beloved mother in 1908; he would later express this experience in a
near autobiographic novel Eyeless in Gaza in 1936. In a final letter to her son written on her deathbed,
she told him, Don t be too critical of people and love much . Huxley later added in 1915, ... I have
come to see more and more how wise that advice was. It s her warning against a rather conceited and
selfish fault of my own and it s a whole philosophy of life (Garret). In 1911, Huxley contracted
keratitis punctata, causing blindness for nearly 18 months resulting in poor vision for the rest of his
life. In that time he learned to read braille and gave up his plan to become a doctor due to his poor
vision and he instead planned to become a writer. The third and final traumatic experience would be
the suicide of his older brother Trevenen who had comforted him during his temporary blindness. The
factors that may have attributed to the suicide may have been his failure to achieve honors at Oxford
University and a love affair with a woman of a differing social class. In

accidents. The matter of dual tasking plays a significant role here, that is the human capacity to
performance concurrent tasks weather cognitive or motor are limited. The significant increase in
reaction time during dual tasking is indicative of decreases in attention, perception, integration and
reaction (Andrew Park et al.,2013). Engaging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stayer et al.(2006) compared two types of drivers which mobile phone drivers and drunk drivers.
Alcohol has been used as a benchmark for assessing performance impairments including in aviation,
fatigue and many more. Thus, it is good for the study to see the harmful effects of using mobile phone
on driving performance by comparing it with the performance of drivers with a blood alcohol
concentration at a legal limit. Other strength is Strayer et al.(2006) used repeated measure in the study.
All of the forty participants need to participate in all of the conditions. This will exclude the effects of
individual differences that could occur if two different people were used instead. Thus, the result of
the study became more valid as the researchers can observe participants driving performance from
three different conditions. The limitation of the study is the usage of driving stimulator in the
experiment. Participants have not been exposed to the real danger as driving stimulator can control the
condition. Thus, they might act in a different manner compared to a real life situation. Next, distractor
vehicles were programmed to drive between 5% and 10% faster from the participants car. So,
participants were prepared and used to that kind steady flow of traffic. It does not reflect real life
situation where distractor vehicles will drive at any rate of speed. The distractor vehicles could be
faster or slower than our car in real situation. Thus, the increased or decreased in driving performance
can be question out because the speed of distractor vehicles has been set up rather than having normal
speed of distractor

The Human Tendency Towards War Exemplified in William...
Thomas Hobbes once said, Hereby it is a manifest, that during the time man live without a common
power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war . . . (Hobbes 64). Thomas
Hobbes, an enlightenment thinker, believes that humans are born evil, and without a good leader,
everything will turn into chaos. William Golding s Lord of the Flies rightly gives examples on Hobbes
viewpoint. Throughout the story, it shows the process in which the boys slowly loses their civilized
self and turn into savages, how the boys would do anything just for survival or just purely
entertainment. William Golding shows the innate evilness within humans by employing religious
allegory as by using events, characters, and settings that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, the characters in the story parallels to other characters in the Bible. When Ralph starts
condemning himself, Simon cheers him up by saying, You ll get back to where you came from
(Golding 111). According to the Bible, only Satan causes condemnation. By interrupting Ralph and
giving him hope, Golding illustrates Simon as Jesus because he saves Ralph from being torn apart by
Satan. The quote also suggests Simon knows something Ralph does not know. It shows that Simon
may have the ability to foresee future events. Later, when Simon talks to the beast, or Lord of the
Flies, it says, I m the reason why it s no go? Why things are what they are? (Golding 143). The Lord
of the Flies symbolizes Satan. In the New Testament, after baptism, Satan temps Jesus with various
things for forty days. Simon is the only person that is able to speak to the beast on the island. His
innate goodness helps him to be able to speak to the Lord of the Flies without being afraid, which is
something only Jesus can do. Throughout the story, Simon displays various traits of Jesus such as
being deeply spiritual, compassionated, and non violent. The setting of the story are also related to
stories in the Bible. The island is described as The air was thick with butterflies, lifting, fluttering,
settling (Golding 28). The image described resembles to that of the paradise. Just like the Garden of
Eden, the island has an ideal weather, an abundance of fruits,

Meerkats
Meerkats: Standing Tall
Steven Fetherolf
Strayer University
Introduction
Standing tall, the small animal scans the sky for predators, his neck extended and head swiveling side
to side, ever diligent in the search for anything that may prove a threat to his group of fellow meerkats.
At his fullest height, he barely reaches 12 , the average of an adult male in his species. What is this
strange animal, looking similar to a mongoose or an elongated squirrel and sporting black bandit
markings around its eyes that are vaguely reminiscent of a raccoon? What does anyone know of this
incongruous, oft overlooked creature, whose comparable significance to more exotic animals is
virtually unknown? If you have watched the television channel ... Show more content on

This tolerance to venom ensures that the meerkat has little competition for its diet and further allows
them to maintain a steady, plentiful supply. Due to the harsh, water scarce deserts in which meerkats
live, finding adequate water supplies is nearly impossible and when present, water is dominated by
larger animals that consider meerkats to be a meal. Therefore, the meerkat must make use of available
moisture and obtains its requirements primarily through its diet.
It has been observed that a gang of meerkats will inhabit underground burrows consisting of numerous
entrance and exit holes, multiple sleeping and birthing chambers, and having hundreds of feet of
tunnels branching off in several directions, which give them the ability to escape predators who invade
their homes. An average gang s burrow may have well over fifteen separate dens and it should be
noted that the number of areas provide them the opportunity to rotate their use every three to four
weeks. This rotation is a result of parasite (ticks, ants, fleas) overload, making living conditions both
unsafe and unsanitary. Once the parasitic levels have reached a reasonable level, meerkats will re
inhabit the dens. At least one chamber within the burrow is reserved as a bathroom, or litter box,
serving as a safe place for relief of bodily functions. It is extremely unsafe for a meerkat to exit the
burrow at night to relieve themselves, so having a

The Effect Of Temperature And Ph Levels On Enzyme Activity

How Do Changes in Temperature and pH Levels Affect Enzyme Activity? Lab Report
In biology class, we ve learned that sugars produce energy and to use sugars to gain energy, an
organism needs a proper enzyme should exist to break it down the chemical bonds of the sugar.
Enzymes and proteins are important in organisms because they are involved in most chemical
reactions that take place inside of an organism. Our example of an important enzyme was catalase,
which breaks down H2O2. H2O2 is a natural by product and toxic. When H2O2 contacts catalase, it
breaks down into water and oxygen. Our group got curious about how changes in temperature and pH
levels affect enzyme activity. Since enzymes are group of protein and protein can break easily by acid,
base, and hot temperature. To experiment our question, we used catalase solution, 3% H2O2 solution,
0.1 M HCl solution, 0.1 M NaOH solution, a beaker, an O2 gas sensor, sensor interface on a
Chromebook, pH paper, and safety gloves. Therefore, we conducted experiments to test how enzyme
activity in different conditions. Plus, we predicted that if temperature increases or enzyme have
contacts with acid or base, enzyme activity will decrease. We held four controlled experiments which
are controller, temperature, HCl Acid, and NaOH Base. We controlled the amount of catalase to 10 mL
and H2O2 solution to 4 mL. First we mixed catalase with H2O2 solution and used O2 sensor to gather

William Edward Burghardt. B. Dubois, Marcus Garvey And...
From the obscure period of slavery, those with darker skin was taught to hate themselves in order for
the Whites to obtain economical gain. Their goal was to break Blacks of their rich heritage and spirit
in order to control them as they would with domesticated cattle. This philosophy transcended from
generation to generation to where it was instilled into their processes of thought and their way of life.
Whites have taunted Blacks attempting to belittle their character, squander their self confidence, and
brand them the infamous word nigger . While some carried oppression on their shoulders, a selected
few rose above the negativity and began to spread self love, self efficiency and the rise of black power.
Black became beautiful and the process of dehumanization was being reversed. W.E.B. Dubois,
Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X were a few of the candidates that advocated for the Pan African
movement.
William Edward Burghardt (W.E.B.) Dubois was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts in 1868. As
a child, he did not have much experience with racism. He completed high school at the young age of
16 and went on to attend Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee where Dubois experienced racism
and segregation for the first time. He then went to Berlin to earn a second B.A. and then became the
first African American to earn a doctorates degree from Harvard University in 1895. While at Harvard

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Hillary Clinton
To keep the American tradition, President Obama signed an executive order requiring the loser of the
Presidential election to leave the country. Obama stated No Matter who that loser is .
The nation has been evenly divided between Donald Trump, who is calling for dictatorial control of
the country with massive tax breaks to the top 1%, and Hillary Clinton, who is calling for tax breaks
for the middle class.
The battle cry for Trump is the slogan Hillary is going to raise taxes and I m going to cut taxes . In
order to try and control the media, Trump says anyone one who challenges the media s control is
sexist, racist, xenophobic and morally deformed. He must mean the indisputable king of propaganda,
Fox News. The main policy Donald Trump is offering, is to do everyone a favor by getting rid of gays,
trannies, blacks, Latinos, Mexicans and all other minorities. He will also use his dictatorship to get rid
of any military generals that pose a threat to Russia. He is also calling for law and order by
prosecuting people without a fair trial. In other words he will make America great again. ... Show

The Bigger Than Big Slope
My alarm went off that Sunday morning, playing that one J. Cole song that it always did, and for once,
just once, only for that day, I actually didn t hit that snooze button and woke up. From that last
February since, every month, every week, every day, and every hour, I d been patiently waiting and
waiting and waiting for this very day to come and it was finally here! I darted out of my room and
dashed out to my parents and sister s room and shook them awake. As they ever so slowly trudged out
of bed, I was already downstairs, all ready to go. After what seemed like hours, the whole family was
ready to go. We all hopped into the car drove out to this place near mosque where the ski bus picked
us all up. As we rolled into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

brightness while keeping some of its warmth. Our group quickly put on our snow gear and raced out

us fell onto the hard, slippery ice. Laughing and running, looking like a bunch of hooligans, we got to

heavy boots. With a click, we fit our boots into the skis and were all ready to go. Our gang waddled
out of the ski rentals with the skis on. What do you wanna start with? Let s go on the medium slope

down repeated itself as we raced down what we called the medium and big slopes. We were counting

Racism Against The Irish Racism
In this paper, I intend to investigate how racism against the Irish in Britain has changed since the
nineteenth century to the modern day, and these causes of the initial prejudices and how they adjusted
over time. To accomplish this, I will examine occurrences of anti Irish racism in Britain from a variety
of dates, and propose causes of the racist feelings though evidence of popular racist and colonialist
theory at the time. Through this analysis, I hope this paper achieves a better understanding of how
racism and prejudice works throughout time, so that its effects can be hindered in the future. The issue
of anti Irish racism in Britain is not a relic of the past. The Plymouth Herald published an article
reporting some instances of anti ginger related crimes in recent years. Officers revealed that in a crime
recorded on January 13, 2013 a red headed person was assaulted and occasioned actual bodily harm.
The offender was given a caution for the crime investigated by Plymouth Central and Plymstock
Sector. (The Plymouth Evening Herald, 25). All anti ginger and anti Irish crimes in the area would be
difficult to record, however since crimes against this group of people are not classified as hate crimes,
and thus are not reported as such. Not only is violence against the Irish in Britain a modern issue,
scientific studies concluding that the Irish and other minority groups in Britain are racially inferior,
traditionally thought of as an archaic practice during the

Learning Standards And High Level Of Thinking Skills
Currently in education there is a push for teachers to have rigorous learning standards and high
expectations for all their students, by challenging their students with a higher level of thinking skills.
Since the release of A Nation At Risk (National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983) the
debate about the quality of America s schools has grown exponentially (Blackburn Williamson, 2009,
p.1). Furthermore, with the implementation of No Child Left Behind in 2001, the discussion raised to
a new level. For the first time, schools were held liable for the success of every student.
However, with an increasing amount of expectations being placed on the students to demonstrate their
abilities on standardized tests, teachers feel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So often educators only look at a students ability level when predicting achievement, ignoring that the
efficacies of these students play an influential role also (Scott, 1996, p.197).
Using students ability as the primary predictor for students achievement while disregarding
motivation, self efficacy and students mindset is detrimental to any student, because adolescent
students in middle school tend to become more performance oriented and less mastery oriented than
they were in elementary school (Anderman Mueller, 2010, p. 206). Moreover, it is particularly
perilous to students who receive special education services, because for many of them it can be a
turning point towards a diminishing future (Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development, 1989, p.
20). Adverse academic occurrences during middle school can have detrimental effects on students
motivation to learn (Anderman Mueller, 2010).
Chapter Two consists of a review of the literature relevant to the theories of mindset, self efficacy,
motivation, and attribution. In addition, any research that has been conducted that relates to these
theories will also be reviewed in this chapter. Furthermore, there will be a review of how the

Wilson disease is one of the common metabolic liver disorders prevailing worldwide. The diagnosis is

history of passing high coloured urine for three months. It was associated with nausea, diffuse
abdominal pain and decreased appetite. There was no history of irritability, change in behaviour or
altered sleep pattern and no bleeding from any site. He had not received blood transfusion any time in
the past. There was no similar illness any of the family members. The child was admitted to a private
institution for a two week period, but as there was no improvement, he was referred to our institute. At
admission, he was afebrile and vitals were stable. General physical examination revealed mild pallor
and severe jaundice. Gastrointestinal systemic examination revealed moderate hepatomegaly along
with an enlarged left lobe of liver. There were no other clinical features suggestive of chronic liver
disease. Investigations revealed a total serum bilirubin of 15.6mg/dl with conjugated fraction of

Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone
Though plays have been a form of entertainment for thousands of years, the late 19th Century saw the
invention of a new kind of medium; the motion picture.[1] Since then, comparisons between a film
and the novel it was based upon have become mainstay. Amazingly, ardent fans of a particular novel
can become polarized when the material is changed in any fashion or perceived in a different sense
than the reader imagined. Thus, Book to Film Adaptation Analysis are commonplace in today s society
and ripe with the energetic opinions of the consumer. Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone was a
novel written by J.K. Rowling and published by Bloomsbury in 1997.[2] It is the first book in a series
and proved immensely successful having won most of the British book awards that were judged by
children and other awards in the United States.[3] It quickly topped the New York Times best seller
list and stayed near the top for nearly two years![4] By mid 2008 official translations of the book were
published in 67 languages. Hollywood, looking for fresh material, took notice and by the end of 1999,
Rowling had sold the film rights to the first four Harry Potter books to Warner Brothers.[5] Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone released to audiences on November 16th, 2001 to great success. Like
its predecessor, it received high praise by critics.[6][7] Roger Ebert, well known for his insightful film
reviews, gave it four out of four stars calling it a classic, and particularly praised

Seventeen years later, all of my older children were lined up at the front of the church, with the
minister in the middle, along with the siblings of their soon to be husbands. My oldest daughters
wanted to get married at the same time, and no amount of fatherly persuasion could convince them
otherwise, so I walked both of them down the aisle at the same time, one on the right arm, and the
other on the left. My younger children carried and threw flower petals, or carried the rings, and other
ceremonial portions of the service.
More than anything, I was simply praying that my daughters would be serious enough not to pull any
pranks during the service, or for one of them to catch fire during the service as one of the men of
honor had done the night of dress rehearsals when he backed into a lit candle and his mullet ignited.
Our minister knew these two girls, plus their 12 other biological siblings, and the half dozen other
adopted children my wife and I raised, and at times buried. The minister who performed their
dedication in infancy was also the same one who was about to perform the marriage, and he knew my
kids penchant for creative mischief, but all of them had sworn to be on their best behavior and all of
them of course promised that there would be no pranks at their own weddings.

  • 2. The Powerful Roman Empire On Ancient Times Jayan Joshi History 9 Mrs. Santosuosso 2/10/16 The Powerful Roman Empire The Roman Empire was one of the most well known empires in history. It was the most powerful of all of the empires and covered at least a part of over fifty present day countries. It covered the most area out of all of the empires in history. Other than the Spartans, the Roman Empire had the most powerful army of the ancient world and contained over 20% of the world population back then. The Roman s ingenuity created many inventions as well, such as the arch, which, with aqueducts, would revolutionize the transport of water and other supplies across the empire. The Roman Empire was the strongest in ancient times, and contained almost all of modern day Europe in its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One main reason that the Roman Empire expanded so much was because of their many good emperors such as Trajan and his successor Hadrian. Trajan was emperor of Rome from 98 117 CE and is considered one of the Five Good Emperors of Rome. One reason Trajan was considered such a good emperor was because he was kind and generous to the Roman People and Senate. Because of this, Trajan was one of the reasons that Rome could have so much land and be at the height of their power during his reign. Trajan made sure that the poor were fed and cared for, and almost everybody in his empire liked him. Aside from his kindness, Trajan was also recognized for his achievements in war and expanding Rome to its height in 117 AD with 5 million square kilometers. Throughout Trajan s reign, he captured Dacia, or present day Romania, and the Parthian Empire, or the Persians with his skill in fighting. Following Trajan s death in 117, Hadrian rose to the throne. Hadrian is considered another one of the five good emperors of Rome, except Hadrian was different than Trajan in that he unified and consolidated Rome rather than seize more land as Trajan had. Rather than expand the Empire, Hadrian ruled justly and traveled around his empire and rectified tax situations. Hadrian is most well known for building a wall across Britain to keep out barbarians called Hadrian s Wall. Although these emperors helped maintain the Roman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Matisse s Le Bonheur De Vivre As instrumental as Matisse and Picasso were to the development and evolution of modern art, they were inspired by Cézanne. In this essay, I will describe how Paul Cézanne s The Large Bathers (1906) inspired Matisse and Picasso but also how they evolved. It is evident that while still embracing the abstract style emerging in the turn of the century, Cézanne still chose to compose his painting in a classical way. (Harris Zucker, n.d.) There is still a believable perspective in the painting, even if the forms of the women are abstract but familiar. Henri Matisse s Le Bonheur de Vivre (1906) strays away from the classical style by creating a perspective that is unreal. The couple in the bottom right corner are significantly larger than the woman next to them, but also nearly equal in size to the women in the middle of the painting. The composition is very skewed because of the liberations he took in regards to perspective. There is also a more playful feel to Matisse s painting than Cézanne s. Not only are the figures carefree, but so are the contrasting colors and brushstrokes. This is very different from The Large Bathers but also very different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is why this painting is seen as the beginnings of Cubism. There is no perspective; the picture is completely flat. The women are nonrepresentational and weird. This style will carry forward into the rest of Picasso s career. (MoMA, n.d.) Whereas Cézanne and Matisse also painted nude women, their representation isn t vulgar. This is not the case for Picasso s painting. Picasso turned Matisse s sensuality into violent pornography. (Harris Zucker, n.d. para. 11) Their poses are raunchy and shocking. It is not as sensual or lively as Matisse s painting nor as intimate or accurate as Cézanne s. However, despite all these differences, you can see stylistic similarities such as the pastel colors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Doe Season Symbolism Doe Season is a short story written by David Michael Kaplan. David Michael Kaplan was born in 1946 in New York. He started his writing career in 1985 with his first novel Skating in the Dark, and wrote Doe Season in 1987. He is identified in the writing community as a magical realist and receives most of his influence from magical realist elements like interweaving magical elements with detailed, realistically drawn everyday setting. Kaplan wrote this book as a coming of age story of a girl starting to become a woman. This is a critical analysis of the short story Doe Season by observing and identifying different key elements within the story. The main characters in this story are Andy, Andy s father, and Andy s mother. Andy is a young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The title Doe Season could be translated to the female time. Doe meaning female and season meaning time. The female time is symbolic because it refers to Andy and how it is almost the end of her innocence, or childhood, and the beginning of becoming a women. Another piece of important symbolism in this story are the woods. To Andy, the woods symbolize safety. Andy knows the woods and is comfortable in the woods. When Andy is running in the woods from the dead doe she start to hear the sounds of the ocean, this symbolizes her leaving her innocence, and her comfort and going towards womanhood, the unknown that is the ocean. The ocean reminds her of her mother when her top came off in the ocean and she saw her mother s breasts. She knows that one day she will also have breast like her mothers and will become a women, but this is unknown, scary area for Andy. During the second night after Andy shot the doe, she has a dream. In her dream there is an instance where Andy pressed deeper, through flesh and muscle and sinew, until her whole hand and more was inside the wound and she had found the doe s heart . They both simmered down in their own thoughts for a while, trying to make sense of their confusing emotions. It was the longest car ride ever. Eventually, however, Noah pulled into his parking space and they got out. They walked up to the fourth floor in silence before Noah finally said, Hey do you want to come in for some tea or something? There s something I really have to tell you. Noah had a serious look on his face that made Lexi nervous. For set design, the next aspect of meaning in a film is the design of the sets. The color, shape and angles of a set can be a very important way of communicating, not only meanings, but also emotional or psychological states of mind to the viewer. In the matrix everything is filled with green, it seems like the camera is also covered with a green tinted lens. This can then divide a clear vision difference for the audiences between the actual real world and the matrix. In fact, the actual real world is linked with the matrix and in some ways they relate with connection. The matrix, for some reason is evil to the human. Therefore, when things become evil, the color of green is also involving inside as green itself is representing the matrix. When Smith is trying to kill Neo, there are green flames surrounding around them. However, green the actual meaning in psychology refers to safety, health, nature and life. This suggests that if the machines are neither evil nor self indulgent, the one who carry out the program are Merovingian and Smith. Green therefore, its meaning in here is seen as virtual as it is different from the original meaning, but the color of it is seen as real. Comparison of the Protagonists in Juno and Catcher in the Rye The main protagonists Juno and Holden of movie Juno and the book Catcher in the Rye, have main thing in common, they have not yet accepted the fact they play a role in society, communicating with the people around them, and with their families. Where they differ is in the problems they face. Juno s main problem is that she becomes pregnant at a young age which is considered to be a life changing event by societal standards. The main source of Holden s problems comes from result of the death of his little brother Allie who had Leukemia and his inability to cope with it. • 12. Old Man and the Sea There is never a simple key to any writer worth much attention, but in the case of Hemingway there is something that looks so like a key that it cannot escape any informed and thoughtful reader s notice (O Conner 153). Ernest Hemingway was one such author. Very rarely did he summarize statements, therefore the only way to solve his puzzle was to take it apart and examine each components. One of the hidden elements that the reader must analyzie closely is the parallel between Santiago and Jesus Christ. In the novel, The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway creates connections between Santiago and Jesus Christ that adds religious coloration to the story. Santiago can be compared to a Christ figure on the basis of his relationships ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This later passage which details Santiago s painful climb up the hill to his shack, bearing the mast of his boat on his shoulders is an allusion to Christ s last ascent (Wylder 91). William O Conner believes The Old Man and the Sea can be classified as a Christian tragedy especially in several marked allusions to Christian symbolism, particularly of the crucifixion (O Connor 169). Following the example of Christ, he [Santiago] suffers unjustly and undergoes defeat. He experiences his own type of crucifixion. But he accepts suffering, again following the model of Christ (Auer 22). Carrying the mast (cross), Santiago struggles to his shack. At the shack, Santiago goes to bed in a crucifixion pose: face down, arms out, palms up. He pulled the blanket over his shoulders and then over his back and legs and he slept face down on the newspapers with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up (Hemingway 112). As a result of the precise parallel between Santiago and Christ, the reader can infer that Santiago is Christ in disguise. One critic Arvin Wells believes Santiago can be seen as a Christian saint (22). Wells concludes this theory because Santiago has achieved the most difficult and saintly of all Christian virtues, humility. There are reminiscences of Christianity present in the story sometimes as a symbol, sometimes as direct allusion and sometimes merely as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Beowulf And The Anglo Saxon Epic Poem, Beowulf In the Anglo Saxon epic poem, Beowulf, a myriad of virtues define the warrior Beowulf. Coming from his homeland, Geatland, he arrives in the land of the Danes resolute in helping King Hrothgar defeat an evil monster, Grendel. Beowulf is an impressive, strong warrior who will triumphantly defeat Grendel; moreover, he will demonstrate how one must seek glory before death, a legacy. A man s reputation and his lineage is exceedingly important in the patriarchal society Beowulf lives in. Consequently, through his code of honor, loyalty and pride, he leads in battle and conquers his enemies, acquires fortunes, gains land and all the treasures imaginable. He will encounter three battles that will depict his character and his worth. The rich manner with which the poem describes these events demonstrate Beowulf s prowess. Beowulf is the epitome of what a hero should aspire to be, a man of honor, loyalty and pride to leave a remarkable legacy. During the fifth and sixth centuries, the Scandinavian feudal government exercised the honor system of comitatus. Comitatus consisted of thanes pledging their lives to defend their king, in exchange for the king s rewards. These rewards consisted of protection, land, treasure and perchance a title. Beowulf follows this code rigorously and it is what allows him to carry himself with maturity and control when facing any obstacle. Although many aspire to tangible rewards, Beowulf is greatly concerned about the prestige a victory will do to his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Poignant Prophet By Aldous Huxley The Poignant Prophet One could say that Aldous Huxley was born into greatness, or one could also say that his greatness was forged from his experiences. Neither would be wrong. Huxley was a third son born in 1894, into a family that was distinguished on both sides. He was able to attend paid public school and later attended Eton. Huxley suffered three great traumas that affected his life deeply. The first would be the death of his beloved mother in 1908; he would later express this experience in a near autobiographic novel Eyeless in Gaza in 1936. In a final letter to her son written on her deathbed, she told him, Don t be too critical of people and love much . Huxley later added in 1915, ... I have come to see more and more how wise that advice was. It s her warning against a rather conceited and selfish fault of my own and it s a whole philosophy of life (Garret). In 1911, Huxley contracted keratitis punctata, causing blindness for nearly 18 months resulting in poor vision for the rest of his life. In that time he learned to read braille and gave up his plan to become a doctor due to his poor vision and he instead planned to become a writer. The third and final traumatic experience would be the suicide of his older brother Trevenen who had comforted him during his temporary blindness. The factors that may have attributed to the suicide may have been his failure to achieve honors at Oxford University and a love affair with a woman of a differing social class. In ... The Centre for Accident Research Road Safety Queensland (CARRS Q) stated that driver distraction is recognized as one of the main contributors of road accidents, this is estimated to represent one quarter of all traffic accidents. The matter of dual tasking plays a significant role here, that is the human capacity to performance concurrent tasks weather cognitive or motor are limited. Alcohol has been used as a benchmark for assessing performance impairments including in aviation, fatigue and many more. Thus, it is good for the study to see the harmful effects of using mobile phone on driving performance by comparing it with the performance of drivers with a blood alcohol concentration at a legal limit. Other strength is Strayer et al.(2006) used repeated measure in the study. All of the forty participants need to participate in all of the conditions. This will exclude the effects of individual differences that could occur if two different people were used instead. Thus, the result of the study became more valid as the researchers can observe participants driving performance from three different conditions. The limitation of the study is the usage of driving stimulator in the experiment. Participants have not been exposed to the real danger as driving stimulator can control the condition. Thus, they might act in a different manner compared to a real life situation. Next, distractor vehicles were programmed to drive between 5% and 10% faster from the participants car. So, participants were prepared and used to that kind steady flow of traffic. It does not reflect real life situation where distractor vehicles will drive at any rate of speed. The distractor vehicles could be faster or slower than our car in real situation. When Ralph starts condemning himself, Simon cheers him up by saying, You ll get back to where you came from (Golding 111). According to the Bible, only Satan causes condemnation. By interrupting Ralph and giving him hope, Golding illustrates Simon as Jesus because he saves Ralph from being torn apart by Satan. The quote also suggests Simon knows something Ralph does not know. It shows that Simon may have the ability to foresee future events. Later, when Simon talks to the beast, or Lord of the Flies, it says, I m the reason why it s no go? Why things are what they are? (Golding 143). The Lord of the Flies symbolizes Satan. In the New Testament, after baptism, Satan temps Jesus with various things for forty days. Simon is the only person that is able to speak to the beast on the island. His innate goodness helps him to be able to speak to the Lord of the Flies without being afraid, which is something only Jesus can do. Due to the harsh, water scarce deserts in which meerkats live, finding adequate water supplies is nearly impossible and when present, water is dominated by larger animals that consider meerkats to be a meal. Therefore, the meerkat must make use of available moisture and obtains its requirements primarily through its diet. It has been observed that a gang of meerkats will inhabit underground burrows consisting of numerous entrance and exit holes, multiple sleeping and birthing chambers, and having hundreds of feet of tunnels branching off in several directions, which give them the ability to escape predators who invade their homes. An average gang s burrow may have well over fifteen separate dens and it should be noted that the number of areas provide them the opportunity to rotate their use every three to four weeks. This rotation is a result of parasite (ticks, ants, fleas) overload, making living conditions both unsafe and unsanitary. Once the parasitic levels have reached a reasonable level, meerkats will re inhabit the dens. At least one chamber within the burrow is reserved as a bathroom, or litter box, serving as a safe place for relief of bodily functions. It is extremely unsafe for a meerkat to exit the burrow at night to relieve themselves, so having a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Effect Of Temperature And Ph Levels On Enzyme Activity Joshua Kwon Sep 19, 15 Biology p 4 How Do Changes in Temperature and pH Levels Affect Enzyme Activity? Lab Report In biology class, we ve learned that sugars produce energy and to use sugars to gain energy, an organism needs a proper enzyme should exist to break it down the chemical bonds of the sugar. Enzymes and proteins are important in organisms because they are involved in most chemical reactions that take place inside of an organism. Our example of an important enzyme was catalase, which breaks down H2O2. H2O2 is a natural by product and toxic. When H2O2 contacts catalase, it breaks down into water and oxygen. Our group got curious about how changes in temperature and pH levels affect enzyme activity. Since enzymes are group of protein and protein can break easily by acid, base, and hot temperature. To experiment our question, we used catalase solution, 3% H2O2 solution, 0.1 M HCl solution, 0.1 M NaOH solution, a beaker, an O2 gas sensor, sensor interface on a Chromebook, pH paper, and safety gloves. Therefore, we conducted experiments to test how enzyme activity in different conditions. Plus, we predicted that if temperature increases or enzyme have contacts with acid or base, enzyme activity will decrease. We held four controlled experiments which are controller, temperature, HCl Acid, and NaOH Base. We controlled the amount of catalase to 10 mL and H2O2 solution to 4 mL. First we mixed catalase with H2O2 solution and used O2 sensor to gather ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Racism Against The Irish Racism In this paper, I intend to investigate how racism against the Irish in Britain has changed since the nineteenth century to the modern day, and these causes of the initial prejudices and how they adjusted over time. To accomplish this, I will examine occurrences of anti Irish racism in Britain from a variety of dates, and propose causes of the racist feelings though evidence of popular racist and colonialist theory at the time. Through this analysis, I hope this paper achieves a better understanding of how racism and prejudice works throughout time, so that its effects can be hindered in the future. The issue of anti Irish racism in Britain is not a relic of the past. The Plymouth Herald published an article reporting some instances of anti ginger related crimes in recent years. Officers revealed that in a crime recorded on January 13, 2013 a red headed person was assaulted and occasioned actual bodily harm. The offender was given a caution for the crime investigated by Plymouth Central and Plymstock Sector. (The Plymouth Evening Herald, 25). All anti ginger and anti Irish crimes in the area would be difficult to record, however since crimes against this group of people are not classified as hate crimes, and thus are not reported as such. Moreover, it is particularly perilous to students who receive special education services, because for many of them it can be a turning point towards a diminishing future (Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development, 1989, p. 20).
